Pundit says Poch return wouldn’t keep Kane

Tottenham fans will be hoping that the potential return of Mauricio Pochettino could convince Harry Kane to stay at the club.

But former Premier League manager Lawrie Sanchez told Football FanCast that the England captain has already made his mind up and will be moving on this summer.

After making a handful of appearances under Tim Sherwood in the previous season, Kane was given his first proper chance in first-team football at Spurs by the Argentine, who played a major part in the striker becoming one of the most feared strikers in the world.

But the 27-year-old has made his feelings clear about wanting to leave his boyhood club, with Kane constantly reiterating his desire to be playing in the Champions League, something Spurs are unable to offer after finishing outside the top four for the second season in succession.

When Pochettino departed in November 2019, Kane said on Instagram: “I’ll be forever thankful to you for helping me achieve my dreams” – but Sanchez doesn’t think that the Argentine’s possible return will influence Kane’s future.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“I think Kane has made his mind up. There has been a long leaf about if he doesn’t win anything – even if he had won the Champions League it would have been difficult to keep him.

“Kane is England captain, he’s going to meet up with all his teammates over the summer, and all these lesser players are at bigger clubs winning these trophies and he’ll be thinking ‘I’m at Tottenham’, who haven’t won anything since the League Cup.”

Steve Dunne retires as New Zealand's most experienced umpire

The umpire may yet strike back

Lynn McConnell24-Apr-2002The umpire may yet strike back.New Zealand’s most experienced Test match umpire, and the first umpire in world cricket to have stood in 100 One-Day Internationals, Steve Dunne has confirmed what had been whispered all summer, that he was retiring at the end of the season. The Dunedin-based Dunne has said in announcing his retirement that he is toying with the idea of writing a book about his experiences. With so much cricket behind him he will have a goldmine of stories to dredge. He was exposed to the heat of international relations when standing in the 1996 World Cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka at Calcutta when the game was abandoned. He also stood in a Test match, the first for 12 years, between long-standing antagonists India and Pakistan in Chennai in 1999/00.Often embroiled in controversy, it was Dunne’s decision not to give out Mike Atherton when television replays suggested he had been caught off his gloves in a particularly vital moment of the fourth England-South Africa Test at Trent Bridge in 1998 when South African pace man Allan Donald was well and truly on fire.He was also the square leg umpire in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne in 1995/96 when Australian umpire Darrell Hair called Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing. And last year in New Zealand, he and fellow local umpire Doug Cowie, reported Pakistani fast man Shoaib Akhtar for a suspect bowling action.During the second Test of the recent New Zealand-England series, Dunne was also involved in some controversial dismissals of players. There have been equally a good number of correct calls in close situations in his career, but as is the situation these days with increased electronic coverage and interpretation, it is only the wrong calls that are remembered.Dunne marked his retirement announcement by calling for even more electronic assistance for umpires. He said he never read newspapers or listened to the radio during Test matches.A former first-class player himself, Dunne is aged 58, and stood in 39 Tests, the most by a New Zealander, 100 ODIs and 111 first-class matches. He will not be completely lost to the game as he has indicated he will stand in club and minor representative matches next season.

West Indies name unchanged squad

With the current Cable & Wireless Test series tied 1-1 heading into the fifth and final Test match which begins on Saturday in Jamaica, the West Indies have named an unchanged 13-man squad to play against India

Derrick Nicholas14-May-2002With the current Cable & Wireless Test series tied 1-1 heading into the fifth and final Test match which begins on Saturday in Jamaica, the West Indies have named an unchanged 13-man squad to play against India. But, the West Indies are keeping their options open for the Sabina Test, with everything to play for in Jamaica. The Indians however, will be looking to shore up their bowling as neither side were able to bowl out the other in Antigua, with the match ending in a tame draw.West Indies drew level 1-1 with their emphatic 10-wicket triumph in the third Test at Bridgetown after India won the second Test by 37 runs at Port of Spain. The first Test at Georgetown and the fourth Test in Antigua were drawn.West Indies have lost all but one of their seven home series against the Indians and will be looking to preserve that record either by winning or drawing the final Test. The full squad reads: Carl Hooper (captain), Brian Lara (vice captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Pedro Collins, Cameron Cuffy, Mervyn Dillon, Chris Gayle, Ryan Hinds, Wavell Hinds, Ridley Jacobs, Dinanath Ramnarine, Adam Sanford and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

West Ham fans react to Ogbonna comments

Many West Ham United fans have been reacting to comments from Angelo Ogbonna his omission from the Italy squad for the European Championship.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a good season with West Ham in 2020/21. He made 28 appearances in all competitions (Transfermarkt), helping the Hammers to finish sixth in the Premier League and qualify for the Europa League in the process.

His average of 4.1 clearances per game was the second highest in David Moyes’ squad, while 2.3 successful aerial duels per match also highlighted his defensive prowess (WhoScored). He scored three league goals as well, a decent return for a centre-back.

He has 13 caps to his name for Italy and, after such an impressive campaign, he will have been hoping to be included in the Azzurri’s squad for the Euros this summer. However, Roberto Mancini has decided against calling him up to his 33-man preliminary squad. Ogbonna clearly wasn’t happy with the decision, with him slamming the national team coach for omitting him.

The West Ham defender fumed: “I’m amazed and also bitter. Maybe he hasn’t taken into consideration West Ham’s season, even though we fought until the final day for a Champions League spot. In sport, meritocracy should prevail.”

The comments were shared on Twitter by @WestHam_Central, and it attracted plenty of reaction from Irons supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on Ogbonna’s omission from the Italy squad.

AVFC: Fans react to Josh Feeney update

Aston Villa and Manchester United are both interested in signing teenage defender Josh Feeney, according to the Daily Mail.

The Red Devils have enquired about a move for the Fleetwood Town youngster, but Villa are viewed as front runners for the 16-year-old centre-back. As to be expected, plenty of Villa supporters have been sharing their thoughts on the transfer update on social media.

Feeney, who is yet to feature for Fleetwood at senior level, already stands at 1.93m (6 foot 4). He is captain of England’s under-16 side and scored in a 6-0 win against Northern Ireland four days ago.

It seems that he is catching the eye at both Villa Park and Old Trafford, and any deal could end up costing a significant six-figure sum. Feeney has the freedom to choose his next club from July onwards, according to the Daily Mail.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared the news regarding Feeney on Twitter on Friday evening. Here is what these Villa fans had to say in response, with many enjoying the update.

Villa should sign Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith should look to gazump Leicester in their bid to sign Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard, amid Gabby Agbonlahor’s transfer claim.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that the Hoops’ striker is someone Dean Smith’s side are looking at, but they now appear to face increasing competition in the race to sign him, with claims that Leicester are keen on tying up a deal.

Now, Agbonlahor has urged his former side to act, and insisted that Edouard could be the perfect foil for Watkins as either some much-needed cover or someone to play with him.

He said: “I’ve said it for so long about Edouard, I rate him highly. If I had the money, I’d buy him myself. I think he’s outstanding and I’d love him at Aston Villa as the second striker behind Watkins.

“I think he’d be an outstanding player to bring on during games or to help Watkins. I think Aston Villa should hijack Leicester and go and get him. I watched him and he reminds me of (Moussa) Dembele when he was at Celtic. They’re both similar players and at his age, he can only get better.”

Lange must act

Given that Leicester haven’t yet signed him up just yet, Johan Lange still has the perfect chance to act and steal a march on the Foxes and seal a deal for Edouard.

The £13.5m-rated marksman has bagged an impressive 83 goals in just 168 games for Celtic and has even managed a very decent total of 37 assists too.

His former Celtic boss, Neil Lennon, has previously raved about the qualities that Edouard brings to the table, and it’s a ringing endorsement of why Villa should be going after him.

He said: “He’s hugely important (to us), he’s an outstanding footballer, talismanic almost, he’s so talented, so cool and he had two great finishes. He’s up there with some of the best we’ve had over the last 20 odd years.”

If Villa are looking for someone to provide some competition for Watkins, then Edouard fits that bill to a tee. With Celtic in the midst of a rebuild under a new manager, the Midlands club could swoop in and take advantage of the likely disruption the Hoops find themselves in at the moment.

Meanwhile, Villa could form a superb partnership with this star…

'We have got a lot of hard work to do in the morning' says Keith Parsons

Richard Walsh03-Jul-2002Somerset spent a hard day in the field at Taunton today where table toppers Surrey amassed 448 for 5.After winning the toss Somerset put Surrey in to bat, and Steffan Jones and Simon Francis both claimed early wickets as the visitors slipped to 32 for 2, which could so easily have become 46 for 3.Francis in particular bowled well, and in his opening spell had figures of 7 overs 1 wicket for 12 runs.Mark Ramprakash then started to take control and shared partnerships with Nadeem Shahid (51) Adam Hollioake (87), and Ricky Clarke(50 not out) , and at close of play was unbeaten on 199.At the end of the day Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "The boys have had a long hard day out there today."Keith Parsons told me: "When we won the toss and put them in,it looked greener than usual and we hoped that by the end of the day that we would have got more than five out. But it didn’t work out and they got away."The C and G Final `Man of the Match’ continued : "We have got a lot of hard work to do in the morning to get them out, and then when we bat we have got to dig in and get to their total and beyond."He concluded: "Simon Francis bowled well all day for us, but overall things didn’t go our way today."

Everton manager update on Galtier

Many Everton fans have been left to buzz over a manager update on Christophe Galtier.

As per Be Foot, the now former LOSC Lille boss has a potential move to OGC Nice agreed in principle.

However, the Toffees are said to be very interested in bringing the 54-year-old to Goodison Park as the replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, who has departed for Real Madrid.

The Merseyside club would be able to offer the attraction of the Premier League over Nice, and are also better off financially.

Galtier has just come off the back of a remarkable Ligue 1 title win over PSG, and so it is not a surprise whatsoever to see him linked with plenty of manager-needy teams.

Former sporting director at Lille, Luis Campos, has claimed that Galtier has ‘all the qualities’ to coach in English football, and believes that he would be a good choice for the Blues.

Everton fans on Galtier manager update

These EFC supporters buzzed as the manager update was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim they they were ‘begging’ for his appointment:

Villa can land another Buendia blow to Arsenal

Aston Villa could strike another Emi Buendia-like blow to Arsenal by landing Rangers star Borna Barisic ahead of them this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Dean Smith’s side are one of the teams interested in signing the Croatia international as they look to beef up their left-back options.

And, it’s been claimed that along with Villa, fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and Wolves are also said to be in the mix for the £15k-a-week earning Barisic, and that they will be keeping tabs on him ahead of a potential move.

Another Buendia masterclass

It may not have been a long-running ‘saga’ so to speak, but the battle between Villa and Arsenal over Buendia was a fascinating one to say the least.

The Argentine won the Championship’s Player of the Year award after helping Norwich to promotion back to the Premier League, and it was no surprise that he was attracting interest from elsewhere.

While the Gunners may have finished above Villa in the top-flight last season, it’s Smith’s side who look to be on the way up, with the signings of Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins last summer helping to turn a team that just avoided relegation into one challenging for a European place in the space of a year.

And in a major boost for Villa, The Athletic revealed recently that Buendia made it absolutely clear that Villa was his preferred move from the off-set, and now that a deal has been done, should go down as a real coup and statement of intent.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-united-marcelo-bielsa-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-elland-road-rodrigo-de-paul” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

Johan Lange may not have imagined that he would have to be battling the Gunners for another potential signing so soon after the first, but he now has the opportunity to deliver yet another blow the north Londoners by landing Barisic.

If he can convince the Croatian that his future lies at Villa Park than the Emirates or elsewhere just like he did with Buendia, it would be another superb masterclass.

Beating Arsenal to the “outstanding” Barisic, just like they did with Buendia, could be the second major sign that Villa are on the rise.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith is eyeing a move for this EURO 2020 star…
