QPR fans react as Yoann Barbet signs three-year deal at Loftus Road

[ad_pod ]

QPR clearly plan to rebuild from the back having signed goalkeeper Liam Kelly, full-back Lee Wallace and now Yoann Barbet, with the 26-year-old joining on a free upon the expiry of his contract with Brentford.

The Frenchman made 30 starts for the Bees last term and his versatility will undoubtedly be a huge asset to Mark Warburton as he strives to figure out his best XI – Barbet can play at centre-back or left-back.

Signing an experienced Championship defender with the ability to play out from the back and add a physical presence for free is rare, and exactly the kind of deal QPR should be doing if they are to climb back up the table.

The QPR keeper was giving it large to Bolton fans at the weekend. Find out who had the last laugh in the video below…

The Hoops conceded 71 goals in the league in 2018/19 – the worst defensive record outside of the bottom three – and this weakness has clearly been recognised by Warburton, with Wallace and Barbet bringing experience to an unsteady backline.

Here’s what the Loftus Road faithful had to say about the addition on Twitter, with a couple rubbing it in Bees fans’ faces, while another labelled the signing “unreal”…

Arsenal target Kieran Tierney tipped to make big impression in English Premier League

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal are after Kieran Tierney this summer and former Burnley boss Owen Coyle thinks he can make a big impression in the English top-flight, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s he said?

The paper reported on Saturday that the Gunners have had a £15m bid for the player rejected by the Scottish champions, who are holding out for a fee around £25m.

That would be a record fee for a player leaving Scotland so there would be massive expectation on Tierney’s shoulders if he does make the move, but former Premier League manager Coyle believes he has the talent required to make it at a big club in England.

From 6-0 FA Cup final maulings to Mkhitaryan missing the the Europa League final, is football broken? Fans discuss in the video below…

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the 52-year-old said:

“Kieran is a sensational talent and is only going to get better. Arsenal won’t be the only admirer. Top clubs all over the world will be watching him.

“Every club in England will know how good a player he is. I watch a lot of Premier League football and Kieran could play for any team in the league.

“I truly believe that. He is capable of going into the Man City team — that’s how good he is. You look at Andy Robertson and the impact he has made at Liverpool. Kieran could do the same at a top club in England.

“Scotland have two left-backs who belong in the top bracket of world football in that position. I am so excited to watch him develop because I think he will be even better next season.”

Is Tierney at that level?

It’s a big call to compare Tierney to a recent UEFA Champions League winner like Robertson and the 22-year-old would likely need a season or two in the Premier League, just like the Liverpool defender, to grow and adjust to playing at that level on a consistent basis.

The Celtic left-back has quite the rapport with supporters in Glasgow, being a boyhood fan of the club just like them, and has already won a massive amount of trophies in a pressurised environment.

That popularity is no small part due to his ability though. Tierney is considered to be one of the best young players in Scotland, having won the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award three years in a row between 2015 and 2018, an award that Andy Robertson has won previously.

With 41 appearances in European competition too, he’s not completely without experience at the top level. The body of evidence in his career so far suggests he could make it in England and Arsenal should be ready to pay Celtic’s asking price this summer.

Two reasons Newcastle can hit MLS gold again with Jefferson Savarino

When Newcastle United spent a club record fee for Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron last January, not many knew what to expect from the MLS star, but in five months the Paraguayan international has already proven to be a hit.

Although the 25-year-old playmaker failed to register a goal or an assist in his first few months in the Premier League, Almiron did enough to get St. James Park excited in his opening 10 games in England with the South American playmaker creating more chances per 90 than any other Newcastle player since his arrival, and another exciting prospect from across the Atlantic could be joining the Magpies.

According to Sky Sports News, Newcastle are interested in Real Salt Lake attacker Jefferson Savarino, who is currently at the Copa America representing Venezuela after a solid half-season in MLS, and there are two reasons why the Toon should be looking to bring in the talented winger this summer…

A fee works with what Newcastle have

With a reported price tag of just £6 million, Savarino could be a player that the club prioritises this summer given how small the fee is, and with what Newcastle historically have spent over the past few transfer windows, the money being touted works with what the club have to play with.

With a reported transfer budget of £60 million if Rafa Benitez stays this summer and the ongoing talks of a potential takeover still continuing to drag, it could well be another summer of Newcastle signing players for cheap despite having more money to spend than the likes of Arsenal, and a player like Savarino’s and his price tag could fit the bill of this limitation.

£6 million for a 22-year-old winger who has plenty of experience in a good division and is currently playing at one of the top continental tournaments in world football could be a bargain for Newcastle if they decide to go in for Savarino.

He can bring an extra ‘WOW’ factor to Tyneside

The best attackers make the crowd live on the edge of their seat, and Savarino is very much a winger who does exactly that, and just like with Almiron, this is something the club are in need of.

Although his record this season of three goals and two assists doesn’t exactly scream entertaining or productive, Savarino’s ability to glide past players with ease and keep hold of the ball has made the attacker such a prized commodity, with the winger averaging 2.4 dribbles per game, the joint-eighth highest in MLS this season as well as being disposed only 1.7 times per game.

Almiron brought entertainment to Tyneside last season, and now it’s the Savarino’s time to do the same.

Callum Slattery the most surprising absentee from Southampton’s pre-season squad

[ad_pod ]

Charlie Austin, Guido Carrillo, Mario Lemina, to name but a few. There was plenty of notable absentees when Southampton named the 26-man squad that would be travelling to Austria for a pre-season tour on Monday, but the exclusion of one name in particular may have been more surprising than any other – Callum Slattery.

On the chalkboard

The size of Saints’ bloated squad is there for all to see given that Austin, Carrillo, Lemina, Jordy Clasie, Stuart Armstrong (food poisoning), Harrison Reed, Kayne Ramsay, Tyreke Johnson, Jake Hesketh, Sam McQueen, Harrison Reed, Sam Gallagher and Slattery were all missing, while Sofiane Boufal and new boy Moussa Djenepo are yet to report back to training because of their participation in the African Cup of Nations.

Given inexperienced younger players such as Will Smallbone, Christoph Klarer and Dan N’Lundulu all made the plane, it was more than a bit of a shock to see Slattery miss out.

He made three Premier League appearances as well as two in the FA Cup under Ralph Hasenhuttl last term, and drew personal praise from the Austrian after he made his first top flight start against Burnley in February.

The 51-year-old said post-match: “I know there were some voices that said ‘we don’t sign players in the transfer period’ but we played with a lot of young players and Callum Slattery had his first game in the Premier League.

“We have a lot of new players signed from our own youth team and Slat is another one of the good young guys in our club.

“Maybe we didn’t sign a new player but we have four or five young players who have made their first steps in professional football; players like Valery, Ramsay and Slattery.

“They can be our future.”

What’s the deal, then?

It’s difficult to say.

Perhaps the club have decided he would be better off going out on loan and that is the reason he has been left behind in England.

Even that would seem strange though, given they are actively looking to move another central midfielder in Lemina on according to a report in The Telegraph.

The Gabon international has already been linked with moves to Manchester United, Arsenal and Leicester City, as well as Serie A outfit Atalanta.

Southampton’s new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below…

His potential exit should leave Slattery to fight it out with the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse for a spot in the middle of the park.

However, he was nowhere to be seen on Hasenhuttl’s latest squad list puts that into some doubt, and could suggest that either something has happened behind the scenes, or that he has simply fallen out of favour with the former RB Leipzig boss.

Whatever the situation is, it is a fall from grace for the 20-year-old given where he was just a few months ago.

Leeds fans gutted that Wilks is being sold

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are gutted that the club are set to sell Mallik Wilks after Phil Hay confirmed that it was looking like he would be headed to either Hull City or Barnsley.

The 20-year-old is coming off the back of a fantastic season out on loan at Doncaster Rovers where he scored 14 and assisted eight.

Form like that had Leeds supporters in awe of him last term, but now the fanbase are gutted as he hasn’t been given a chance to replicate those performances at Elland Road in 2019/20.

Leeds’ wide areas are somewhat oversaturated now following the arrivals of Jack Harrison and Helder Costa, as well as the loan deal to bring Jack Clarke back to the club after he was sold to Tottenham.

Hay’s update prompted one fan to respond “please tell me this isn’t permanent”, but in a separate tweet, the journalist confirmed it would be.

Liverpool fans react as Kamil Grabara signs new contract before loan move

[ad_pod ]

After signing for Liverpool from Ruch Chorzow in the summer of 2016, Kamil Grabara has predominantly featured for the Reds’ youth sides whilst at Anfield.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper turned out for Poland U21s during this summer’s European Championships, but in the latest update on his future, Grabara will not be with Liverpool for the upcoming campaign.

As confirmed on the club’s official website, the shot-stopper has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool before joining Championship side Huddersfield on a season-long loan.

Having heard Grabara had penned a new deal with the club before heading out on a temporary basis, Reds fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on the matter.

Many supporters of the Merseyside club insisted that it was a “great move” for him to join Huddersfield and remarked that he would improve significantly in his time under Jan Siewert.

Indeed, Liverpool fans were adamant that the 6 ft 5 stopper would “come back stronger” the following season and even predicted that the 20-year-old could become the future number one at Anfield.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner shares new Instagram snap as team leaves Boston

[ad_pod ]

It was a mixed night at Fenway Park for Liverpool.

The Reds’ pre-season preparations continued with a clash against Sevilla, and the results did not favour the Merseyside club.

After the tough 90 minutes, it were their La Liga counterparts who snatched a 2-1 victory on the night, leaving Jurgen Klopp and his troops with a bitter taste in their mouths.

But it wasn’t all bad – Liverpool got to debut their third kit, some youngsters stretched their legs and they got to greet their American fans in Boston.

James Milner played a part in the defeat and afterwards, he took to

Ian Rush and Georginio Wijnaldum were among the first ones to the scene as they left a couple of emojis in support of Milner.

And of course, as it usually goes with Milner and Joe Hart, the goalie left his traditional “Inman” comment for his friend. “Inman” is an abbreviation for “get in, man” and the tandem use it regularly on each other’s posts.

Celtic fans don’t want Ryan Kent at the club after fan suggestion

[ad_pod ]

Celtic fans have laughed off the potential signing of Ryan Kent after one fan brought up the possibility of him moving to Parkhead.

The Liverpool winger will not leave Anfield on loan this summer as it looks like his time at the club is over. Jurgen Klopp told The Liverpool Echo that at the age of 22 Kent is too old for a temporary deal away from the Champions League winners, clearly implying his future lays elsewhere.

The winger spent last season on loan at Rangers and the club has looked to bring him back again this summer.

Yet, with the Reds looking to cash in on their young winger, Celtic supporters have begun to wonder if he’d be a fit at Parkhead instead.

After all, he has shown he can perform well in Scotland as he was crowned the Young Player of the Year last term, lighting up the league with his excellent one-on-one ability, scoring six times and adding nine assists.

BBC Sport report his price tag to be around £8m, and while these fans are discussing a cheaper move, they still aren’t convinced. Take a look at the reactions on Twitter down below…

Arsenal: Unai Emery hoping to keep Laurent Koscielny at the club for next season

Unai Emery has revealed that he hopes to convince defender Laurent Koscielny to stay at the club for next season.

It is being reported by Goal that the Frenchman could yet stay at Arsenal despite heavy links with a move back to his homeland.

Koscielny was disciplined by Arsenal earlier this summer after refusing to go on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Emery said: “At the moment it’s a very personal decision, and we are respecting that. I am speaking with him and we are going to find the best solution, but overall we need a player like him.” (Source: Goal)

It seems that all is not well between Arsenal and Koscielny, with the France international seemingly aggrieved at a row between the two parties according to former teammate Olivier Giroud. However, his services could be required next season due to Arsenal’s activity in the transfer market.

According to David Ornstein, the north London giants are in talks with other clubs about a move away for Shkodran Mustafi. And with Rob Holding yet to return from injury, Arsenal could be left very short at the back for the start of the Premier League season, with just Calum Chambers and Sokratis Papastathopoulos the only senior options.

As well as the lack of options, Koscielny was statistically one of Arsenal’s best central defenders last season, making the third most clearances and second-most interceptions per game last season.

However, one of the most impressive things about Koscielny is his cool head. Compared to Sokratis (1.5) and Mustafi (1.4), Koscielny has a much lower average of fouls per game (0.5), suggesting he has better decision-making than his compatriots.

Arsenal boss Emery is entirely right in his efforts to attempt to keep Koscielny. Frankly, with the Frenchman still one of Arsenal’s best defenders considering his stats last season, there’s little footballing reason to let him go. Indeed, the lack of options could hurt Arsenal ahead of the new season, especially if one of Chambers or Sokratis gets injured between now and the close of the transfer window, given the lack of experienced cover mentioned above.

Rangers fans react to strong starting XI for Progres Niederkorn tie

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans are loving the starting XI for their Europa League tie against Progres Niederkorn tonight.

Steven Gerrard has named a strong line-up as he aims to see off the side from Luxembourg, with Jermain Defoe preferred up-front to Alfredo Morelos.

The first leg was slightly disappointing for the Gers, with a 2-0 victory feeling underwhelming after dominating the game. Goals from Sheyi Ojo and Joe Aribo could’ve been added to by captain James Tavernier, but his penalty clipped the post at Ibrox and wasn’t followed up.

Should Gerrard’s men get past Progres, a feat the club couldn’t achieve back in 2017, then they already know the identity of their third-round opponents. The victors of the tie will face Danish Cup winners FC Midtjylland in what could be a tricky tie for the Light Blues.

Gerrard would hope to at least replicate last season’s Europa League group-stage exit in his second season in charge of the Gers and the fans are getting excited after his latest team announcement.
