Man United’s Jesse Lingard posts brilliant snap welcoming new boys to Old Trafford

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United probably couldn’t have wished for a better start to the new Premier League season.

The first bout pitted them against their bitter rivals, Chelsea, and the Red Devils comfortably clinched all three points in front of their own fans at Old Trafford.

Credit has to somewhat be given to the Blues as well since the final 4-0 scoreline didn’t really do them justice, but there’s no escaping the fact Manchester United were, when everything is said and done, the superior team.

What’s even more impressive is that they had three Premier League debutants in their lineup as well: Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

Jesse Lingard made sure they felt welcome at the Theatre of Dreams as he posted a brilliant

/B1EfeRcAfUb/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram snap, tagging them all in the process.

Lingard also put their respective nicknames next to their real names, calling Wan-Bissaka Spidey, James Flash and Maguire the Beast, most likely drawing inspiration from popular comic superheroes.

All three seemingly recorded good performances with their first steps at Old Trafford, but now they have to keep it up in the upcoming challenges that await.

The Red Devils face Wolves on August 19 next.

Tottenham deserve to be a part of Premier League title conversation

[ad_pod ]

Few could have predicted last summer that Liverpool would come so close to securing their first Premier League crown while the notion of them losing only once all season would have seemed positively far-fetched.

Though their previous campaign was hardly disastrous the Reds ultimately ‘only’ squeezed into a Champions League spot in 2018 and critically finished a substantial 25 points adrift of the champions Manchester City. It would take little short of a quantum leap to significantly close that gap even factoring in the immediate improvement their record January signing Virgil Van Dijk had made to their rear-guard.

Consequently, only those wearing rose-tinted glasses were tipping Liverpool for the title and this despite a summer where they successfully addressed some long-standing problem areas, signing Alisson from Roma and committing to an expansive midfield refurbishment bringing in Fabinho and Naby Keita for £94m between them.

Corralling a nation’s thoughts is impossible but highlighting a majority view is not and in hindsight that majority view was thus: we were right about Liverpool. We just weren’t right enough.

Assessing Tottenham’s present fortunes prompts many similarities with last summer, when we all knew in our bones that the Anfield machine was revving its engines on a launch-pad: we just didn’t have the wherewithal to air our belief that it might rocket them into the stratosphere. And concerning those similarities we should start not with them – the clubs involved – but once again with us.

This week the BBC data-crunched the results of those who offered up their predictions regarding the final 2019/20 league table. Unsurprisingly Manchester City were considered the most likely to finish top – how could that not be the case after accruing a staggering 198 points across the past two campaigns? – while Liverpool inevitably were placed second. Tottenham meanwhile were placed third.

As for the pundits, their crystal ball revealed the same outcome, with City and Liverpool duking it out at the zenith and continuing their nascent ‘duopoly’. Once again Spurs are a Champions League spot after-thought and the words of Charlie Nicholas in the first link in this paragraph are pertinent: ‘Naturally, I am going for Liverpool to finish second. These two clubs are a distance above the rest of them’.

Are they? Are they really?

It would be a fool’s errand of course to suggest that Guardiola and Klopp’s creations won’t be seriously ‘in the mix’ next May but is it so ludicrous to anticipate a three-way contest in the months ahead? After all, even though last term will forever be remembered as a high-achieving duel it should not be forgotten that as recently as late February a narrative emerged insisting that Spurs were genuine contenders while reaching the Champions League final was further proof of their exceptional quality. These feats were accomplished via a typically mean Mauricio Pochettino-constructed defence and the reliable fire-power of Harry Kane who scored 17 league goals despite missing ten games through injury. It was also achieved through a midfield that was storied in quality but less so in quantity and here we reach a key point.

As early into last term as November it was already clear that Spurs were in need of extra top-class personnel in their central area, back when Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama were either succumbing to or just recovering from injury and Moussa Dembele was very much on his last legs. Six months later, during their incredible quarter-final second leg at the Etihad, an injury to Moussa Sissoko necessitated a reshuffling of Pochettino’s pack so lacking were they in resources.

It could be said then that what Tottenham pulled off last season was done through the negotiating of a weakness. It could be said that it ultimately left them short. It can definitely be said that this not-inconsiderable weakness has now been addressed.

Check out what happened when Thogden mixed with some of Montenegro’s craziest ultras in the video below…

This has been done courtesy of an expansive midfield refurbishment, one that has seen Tanguy Ndombele come in from Lyon. The 22-year-old ripped up Ligue 1 last year with seven assists and showed in his debut against Aston Villa that he has all the requirements to do likewise in the Premier League, marking his first outing with a goal. In addition to Ndombele, the club’s long-term interest in Ryan Sessegnon has finally been realised while the loaning in of Giovani Lo Celso is an exciting proposition.

Where previously Tottenham’s midfield was high in quality but light in numbers now it boasts a compendium of talent, balanced in their attributes, offering options to spare. Indeed go through them, so name me a better array in the top light. As they say on Twitter, I’ll wait.

If this mirrors Liverpool’s summer of last year, that facilitated a sudden elevation, there is also a comparison to be made in each club’s incremental development.

Both Jurgen Klopp and Pochettino have been in situ at their respective employers for several years now (four for Klopp, five for Pochettino) and this has given them time to firmly implement their philosophies and establish a core of players best utilised for them. That’s why just a splattering of signings was enough to soar the Reds up a whole level – because everything else was in place for success – and that’s why Spurs’ trio of new boys should have half of north London very excited right now too.

To extend on this point: in Pochettino’s time in England Spurs have finished above Liverpool four times and City twice. This is not an irrelevant historical fact either because it has been done using a nucleus of players still very much part of Tottenham’s set-up: Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kane et al. Now they have good company.

Will Spurs win their inaugural Premier League next spring? Admittedly that is an unlikely scenario but it is certainly not impossible. They should at least be part of the conversation.

Tottenham transfer news: Playmaker Christian Eriksen set for Spurs stay

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Christian Eriksen is set to stay at Tottenham Hotspur after bids from Spain failed to materialise in the summer transfer window, per The Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

The Denmark international expressed a desire to try something new after the club lost the Champions League final to Liverpool.

Eriksen, the report states, had set his heart on a move to La Liga, but neither Barcelona or Real Madrid have made a move for the playmaker.

Of course, the 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning he can agree a deal that will see him leave for a foreign club on a free in January.

Spurs, the Mail claims, have offered Eriksen a new contract worth £200,000-per-week and it remains on the table, but he has insisted that he is not after a payday, merely a change in his professional circumstances.

A pyrrhic victory

Eriksen seems set to stay until at least January.

On a base level, that seems a good thing for Spurs as they are retaining one of their best players.

But the prospect of losing him on a free transfer will smart for chairman Daniel Levy and manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He has proved that he’s one of the best attacking midfielders in England in his time at Spurs, scoring 66 goals and registering 86 assists in 280 appearances.

Keeping him around is a good thing in the short-term; losing him on a free certainly isn’t.

Manchester United fans react to Nemanja Matic’s dig at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

[ad_pod ]

What do players do when they’re not playing regularly and don’t appear to be catching the manager’s eye? Fire some thinly veiled nonsense at their manager of course.

Nemanja Matic was one of the Premier League’s leading defensive midfielders in his time at Chelsea, but his decline at Manchester United has seen his role significantly diminish.

The Serbia international has played just 22 minutes this season for the Red Devils, and his limited opportunities in the first-team have certainly caused a bit of frustration.

Speaking whilst on international duty, Matic said (as quoted by Sky Sports): “The coach must opt for the team that will fight for the title and if he does not win, he bears the responsibility”.

Essentially, the 31-year-old has publicly declared that if United don’t end up winning the Premier League this season, it will be because Solskjaer isn’t good enough. Sounds pretty logical.

After hearing Matic’s comments, United fans flooded to Twitter to share their thoughts about the midfielder’s apparent dig at the manager.

Many supporters of the Manchester side hailed the former Chelsea ace for speaking his mind and insisted people hated to see it because he is right.

Some Red Devils fans revealed they completely agreed with the 31-year-old’s sentiments, with one supporter claiming Matic knew “what it means to be associated” with United.

Leeds should have considered a second plan for Conor Shaughnessy

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

To say Conor Shaughnessy was a neglected figure at Leeds would be an understatement.

The 23-year-old has appeared just 15 times for the senior team and hasn’t been seen in the Championship since January 2018, a 1-0 defeat against Ipswich.

He only played once last term but that came in the Carabao Cup before a move to Hearts.

Under Marcelo Bielsa, he’s rarely been favoured so a decision to send him out on loan again looks sensible, certainly on paper at least.

Before the window closed for League One and League Two, Mansfield snapped him up on a temporary basis.

The versatile individual was initially signed from Reading but after a breakthrough 2017/18, hasn’t made the necessary strides to make him a regular in the side.

Shaughnessy is predominantly a defender but has also appeared in midfield, albeit he’s only done so on three occasions at senior level.

However, after his debut for Mansfield, it’s a role arguably Leeds should have considered more.

Perhaps rather surprisingly he started in defensive midfield in League Two at the weekend, a role he hasn’t featured in on a regular basis since his youth career.

Now 23, you’d want a player like Shaughnessy to start improving and certainly on his debut for Mansfield, he showed promising strides.

He won two aerial duels and the same number of tackles, as well as having a hand in playing key passes, per WhoScored.

It showed there was a dynamic nature and versatility to his play that Bielsa likes.

He’s played multiple players in different roles this season, including Pablo Hernandez on the flanks and more centrally whilst the same has been done with Jack Harrison.

Finding someone to provide cover for Kalvin Phillips in holding midfield could be somewhat of an issue going forward. He played 44 times last term without many people being able to step into his shoes.

It might be a stretch too far to suggest Shaughnessy had the quality but it’s not as though he hasn’t featured in the Championship before.

Therefore, a loan exit and the role he could have played within the senior side should have been thought about twice.

Tottenham fans hail Fernando Llorente after goal against Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

Fernando Llorente came off the bench to score his first Napoli goal in the Italian side’s 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The experienced striker was part of the Tottenham Hotspur side that suffered a 2-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s side in last season’s European Cup final.

Llorente got some revenge on the Reds on Tuesday, though, as he came off the bench to score Napoli’s second of what turned out to be a very impressive win.

And a number of Spurs fans immediately took to social media to lavish praise on the Spaniard for his telling contribution in the 92nd minute.

Liverpool still have plenty of time to recover in a section which also includes Red Bull Salzburg and Genk, with the former winning their clash 6-2 on the same night.

However, the Spurs fans could not resist a little dig at their Premier League rivals after Llorente managed to get a little piece of revenge.

Crystal Palace’s poor game management must be addressed by Roy Hodgson

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…In Crystal Palace’s last two homes games, a worrying trend has been seen: an inability to see games out.It was first evidenced against Aston Villa. The Villans had 10-men for the final 36Âminutes of the game after Trezeguet picked up a second yellow card in the 54th-minute, and Palace later managed to grab a goal thanks to Jordan Ayew’s effort. However, after they took the lead against the 10-men of Aston Villa, Palace and Hodgson, in particular, did little to attempt to see the game out, remaining open enough in midfield for Jack Grealish and Henri Lansbury to give them a late scare, one that they were lucky to get away with.

The Villa captain drove into the box and played Lansbury in, where the former Arsenal man looked to have scored a late, late equaliser – only for referee Kevin Friend to have already blown for what he deemed to be a dive from Grealish.

More recently, Wolves also had 10-men, this time for the last 17 minutes of the game with Palace 1-0 up after Romain Saiss was sent off in the 74th-minute – all three of the Eagles’ home opponents have now had a man sent off this season, as Everton also saw Morgan Schneiderlin dismissed in their Premier League opener in SE25.

Worryingly, the south Londoners couldn’t find a second goal to kill the game off against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, with Christian Benteke missing a one on one.

It was also the Belgian who was part of a two-on-two attack with Wilfried Zaha in the 95th-minute, only for his pass to run behind the Ivorian.

Unlike the fortunate ending to the Villa game, this time the Eagles were made to pay for their poor game management.

Wolves were granted one more attack by Palace’s sloppiness and took full advantage, with Adama Traore crossing to the back post where Diogo Jota smashed home.

Ultimately, it is down to Hodgson to ensure his side do not allow the opposition – especially 10-men opposition – to have these chances when three points are at stake.

Game management is vital at the highest level and Palace, right now, do not know how to implement it effectively.

Hodgson simply has to address the worrying trend off the back of these two moments.

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish shares his disappointment after losing to Arsenal

It’s hard to not sympathise with Grealish a little bit after this post.

Despite the Gunners being reduced to ten men, Dean Smith’s side failed to pick up any points against the London club.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Grealish says that he doesn’t know how Villa came away from the game without getting at least a draw, and you can understand why he’s so dumbfounded.

The Villans were also denied a late penalty, and if it weren’t for a few errors at the back they’d have picked up all three points against the London club.

Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips could face his toughest test this weekend

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Kalvin Phillips for England?

That has been one of the major claims coming out of Elland Road over the last year or so.

Mason Mount’s call-up last term at Derby provoked a discussion over the Leeds man potentially being in Gareth Southgate’s plans while it was also touched upon with Angus Kinnear on the Talking Shutt podcast last week.

Whether he has the qualities to seriously stake a claim remains to be seen but all he can do is continue to perform.

Phillips doesn’t have Premier League exposure yet but that hasn’t stopped a certain degree of hype surrounding him.

This weekend, however, should give him the opportunity to prove why he’s one of the best in his position in the Championship.

On the chalkboard

The 23-year-old has made the highest number of tackles per game in the league this season which demonstrates just how good he is when it comes to breaking up the play.

Phillips has become a mainstay in the Leeds side, signing a new contract recently which put rumours of him being linked to three Premier League clubs in the summer to bed.

Saturday might well present him with his toughest test of the 2019/20 campaign.

Jonny Williams has been a creative thorn in various Championship outfits this season, registering four assists as Charlton have exceeded expectations.

They have fallen to two defeats since Lyle Taylor got injured but they had previously been competing in the playoff places.

Williams was a major part of that and it will be up to Phillips to lessen his influence in the hole.

This will be a key battle in the game and who comes out on top could determine the result in the game.

Interestingly, the number of times Phillips is dribbled past per outing equates to the value of successful dribbles Williams achieves.

The 1.3 fouls the Leeds midfielder gives away could also be in favour of the opposition. Charlton’s creative linchpin is fouled as many as 2.8 times each match.

Given Leeds’ home form, winning just one from five in all competitions, Phillips will have to be on top form, especially against someone as technical as Williams.

Arguably, he hasn’t faced a threat like that this season. The Addicks’ attacking midfielder has the joint-highest number of assists alongside Reading’s John Swift, an opponent Phillips is yet to face in 2019/20.
