The winger is now back in Australia for the first time since that game, as part of Manchester City's pre-season tour. However, while she might have reason to have negative feelings about the trip, she insists that her memories of the place are 'nothing but good'.

WHAT HEMP SAID

"I really enjoyed my time in Australia last year," she told club media Down Under. "We got to the final, we would have liked to have gone one step further but I had some good experiences of many different games and we got to play Australia [in the semi-final] as well, which was nice. The crowd there was different to any other crowd I've probably witnessed before, so hopefully there will be a lot of those fans coming out to watch us in the upcoming games. But my experience of Australia is nothing but good memories and to be able to experience the culture and the lifestyle as well was special."

'It would be a strange feeling' – Alex Carey on possibility of closed-door T20 World Cup

Carey should’ve been in India for his maiden IPL stint. But for now he’s happy spending time with his 19-month-old son

Andrew McGlashan16-Apr-2020Alex Carey remains hopeful that the T20 World Cup can take place in Australia later this year, even if it means playing in front of empty stadiums.Under normal circumstances, Carey, Australia’s ODI and T20I wicketkeeper and vice-captain, would have been in India playing for Delhi Capitals in his first IPL. That tournament has now been postponed indefinitely even as uncertainty looms over cricket’s landscape globally for the rest of the year.Australia are due to host the T20 World Cup in October and November. While that is still six months away, there is increasing doubt whether it will take place even behind closed doors due to border restrictions that are expected to remain in place for a considerable amount of time.

“You want your fans there, they play a very big part in our sport and without the fans we wouldn’t have a job.”Carey on the prospect of playing in front of empty stadiums

The logistical challenges of a global event mean a decision will need to be taken a considerable distance out from the tournament. If the competition could only go ahead without fans, Carey feels it may be better to delay the event, but concedes that would be difficult to do in the uncertain environment.”That would probably be the ideal situation if you can put a date on it, but it’s probably hard right now to say if we postpone the World Cup then three months later it would be fine to open the gates,” he said. “I trust the guys well above my head to make the right decisions.”As a cricket player and a lover of the game, I’d do anything I could to represent my country at a World Cup. I’d say it would be a strange feeling [without a crowd], no doubt. Playing over in England in the one-day World Cup, having the crowds of all different countries going crazy when they do well is something you can’t really explain.”Out in the middle it’s that atmosphere you love and thrive on. Saying that, the landscape of the world has changed rapidly over the last three months and if it has to be that way I’m sure we’ll find a way to make it go ahead. You want your fans there, they play a very big part in our sport and without the fans we wouldn’t have a job. But I love playing cricket and if there’s no one there I’ll definitely go out and play.”Australia’s T20 form had been impressive over the last six months. They have seven wins in nine matches against Sri Lanka, Pakistan and South Africa, which have resulted in three series wins. The T20 World Cup is the one global title that has eluded them – reaching the 2010 final was their best effort – but they were shaping as one of the favorites on home soil.Their late-season series in New Zealand at the end of March was cancelled as coronavirus restrictions came in and their tour to England in July, which includes three T20Is, is highly doubtful. But Carey is confident of Australia retaining their form if they do play in October.”We know our opening batters are likely to be (Aaron) Finch and (David) Warner, throw in (Steven) Smith at the top, so we’ve been pretty consistent with our line-up in the last six months and it’s really valuable doing that,” Carey said. “You know what your bowlers’ strengths are, you know what the spinners can do – (Adam) Zampa and (Ashton) Agar were fantastic – and the top of the order was making runs.”It was very enjoyable, quite a consistent group with our roles very specific. We had a really good understanding. Again, I’m very optimistic, if in six months’ time the World Cup goes ahead we are playing some really good cricket we like our conditions here in Australia. I know the guys are still keeping fit and staying strong so if we do get an opportunity to play I think our game will be ready to go.”Maintaining his positive outlook, Carey was also seeing the benefits of the enforced time at home with his 19-month-old son – “if I’ve been home for six months of those I’d be surprised,” he said – and a chance to recharge after a hectic period of international cricket.”For myself and a lot of the guys, it’s been a really big summer and probably a big 12-24 months of playing lots of cricket. I’m seeing it as a really good opportunity for the guys to refresh and recharge, already you are seeing some videos of Marnus (Labuschagne) hitting balls in the back yard and I’ve got the golf ball going against the wall to try and keep the hand-eye coordination going.”We are lucky in the fact that we had finished the summer pretty much so the guys can put their feet up and be really keen for when the doors open again to go and train. I have full trust in the guys doing what they can, albeit probably in their back yard.”

Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd target’s agent has now been to Old Trafford

The agent of a Manchester United target described as a "monster" was "in attendance" to watch the defeat to Arsenal over the weekend, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 at home to the Gunners on Sunday afternoon, with a woeful season at Old Trafford now thankfully having just one game remaining in it. Huge changes are needed within the squad during the summer transfer window, and it could even be that Erik ten Hag's days are numbered, too.

Many players are being linked with summer moves to United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly keen on acquiring the services of Manchester City defender Yan Couto, which could be controversial, given the rivalry between the two clubs. The 21-year-old has been on loan at high-flying Girona this season, bagging eight assists in 33 appearances in La Liga and helping them to second place in the table.

Yan Couto for Girona.

If Ten Hag does stay on as manager, he could target some former players, and it is believed that he is "crazy" about the idea of snapping up Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The pair worked together effectively as Ajax, coming within seconds of reaching the 2019 Champions League final.

Benfica ace Joao Neves has been linked with United a number of times throughout this season, arguably being considered one of Europe's most exciting young midfielders – he has a £100m release clause in his current deal.

Man Utd target's agent spotted at Old Trafford

Taking to X, Romano claimed that Manchester United target Benjamin Sesko's agent was at Old Trafford to watch the weekend loss against Arsenal: "Benjamin Sesko’s agent was in attendance at Old Trafford for Manchester United-Arsenal. Here’s Elvis Basanovic posting from the stadium ahead of summer transfer window."

benjamin-sesko-manchester-united-harry-kane-transfer-ten-hag

This is further evidence to suggest that Sesko is a genuine target ahead of the summer window, with the RB Leipzig star a young striker with an enormous amount of potential. Various reports have suggested that United could sign him at the end of the season, and his agent being present at Old Trafford will only add to the rumours.

Still only 20 years of age, he has already achieved so much in the game, scoring 11 goals in 27 caps for Slovenia, and also a combined 46 times for RB Salzburg and Leipzig. Journalist Sripad has even compared him to Napoli superstar Victor Osimhen.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to sign “superb” £35m Man City player for Man Utd

This could be a controversial move…

ByTom Cunningham May 13, 2024

In Rasmus Hojlund, United already have an excellent young centre forward of whom big things are expected, but Sesko could come in and provide competition and ease the burden on the Norwegian. To have two exciting attacking options to lead the line would increase both depth and quality in the squad, with the Leipzig star coming in as a direct replacement for Anthony Martial.

Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul turn down call-ups for England tour

West Indies include Nkmurah Bonner and Chemar Holder for first time

Nagraj Gollapudi03-Jun-2020Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul have declined an invitation to be part of West Indies’ squad to tour England in July, with Nkrumah Bonner and Chemar Holder winning their first Test call-ups.Jermaine Blackwood, the middle-order batsman who made his maiden Test hundred against England in 2015, and left-arm seamer Raymon Reifer have also been included in the 14-man squad, while Shannon Gabriel, Sunil Ambris and Oshane Thomas are named among the 11 reserve players.ALSO READ: England-West Indies schedule confirmedThe 25-man touring party will fly to England on June 8 on private charters, after being tested for Covid-19, and will spend three weeks staying at Emirates Old Trafford quarantining and training on arrival. They will then travel to the Ageas Bowl to train ahead of the first Test, before returning to Old Trafford for the second and third Tests. The series, which now needs final approval from the UK government, will mark the resumption of international cricket which was abruptly halted in March due to the pandemic. It is understood that Cricket West Indies (CWI) is expecting the test results for the travelling players to be back by Friday from Miami. Anyone who tests positive would not take the charter flight.West Indies will spend seven weeks in England, despite the fact there will only be 15 playing days, but throughout this period the squad will be, as CWI said in a media release on Wednesday, “live, train and play” in a bio-secure environment.

“It is a big sacrifice that they are being asked to make to facilitate this series going ahead. It is going to be tough on them. It is not a fun tour”Wayne Lewis, WIPA secretary

With respect to Bravo, Hetmyer and Paul opting out, CWI said that their decision would not count as a black mark against their names. “CWI fully respects their decision to choose to do so. As previously stated, CWI will not hold this decision against these players when considering future selection.”Former West Indies offspinner Roger Harper, who is the chairman of selectors, said Holder was leading a “very competitive squad”, half of which had featured in home series win against England last year. “So they will bring that experience, that knowledge and belief with them and marry it to the enthusiasm and vitality of the newcomers,” Harper said in the CWI release.”The experience of the players who toured England before in 2017 will also benefit the squad greatly. I expect that the bowling unit will once again provide a serious challenge for England and our batting will have to deliver. England is a tough team when playing in home conditions, however, I think the West Indies has a good chance of retaining the Wisden Trophy. We will have to bat consistently well to do so.”One player who played a significant part in West Indies winning the Wisden Trophy in 2019 at home was Gabriel, who has not featured since September last year after undergoing ankle surgery last November. However, after a six-month rehabilitation Gabriel recently said he was feeling positive to come back at full tilt on the England tour.Harper, too, remained optimistic about the strike bowler, who he said was working his way back to full match fitness. “The four weeks leading up to the first Test will be of tremendous benefit to him. A fully fit and firing Shannon adds great potency to the bowling attack, so it is important to have him back at his best.”Jermaine Blackwood has been a prolific run-scorer for Jamaica in domestic cricket•CWI Media/Kerrie EversleyThe selection of Chemar Holder, Bonner and Blackwood was a clear indication that Harper’s panel paid attention to success in domestic cricket. All those three players were top performers in the four-day West Indies Championship, which had to be called off after eight out of the 10 rounds in March. Holder, part of West Indies’ 2016 Under-19 World Cup winning team, was the leading wicket-taker among seamers in the regional competition this season with 36 victims at an average of 18.9.For Bonner, who is 31, this is first time he is returning to West Indies colours having played the last of his two T20Is in 2012. Bonner, who plays for Jamaica, was the fourth-highest run-getter in the regional competition with 523 runs in seven matches at an average of 58.11. His Jamaican teammate Blackwood was the top run-maker in the tournament with 768 runs at 51.20.ALSO READ: ECB backs Covid subs as plans for bio-secure cricket ramp up”Chemar Holder is an exciting young fast bowling talent who is coming off an excellent domestic first-class season,” Harper said. “He should enjoy bowling in English conditions. He could prove a real asset to the team in England. Nkrumah Bonner is an unflappable character. His ability to hold the innings together and bat through tight situations could serve the team very well.”Jermaine Blackwood returns by sheer weight of performance in the domestic first-class season. His patience and application were evident and that resulted in much greater consistency which I look forward to him taking back into the Test arena. His experience of playing Test cricket in England should stand him in good stead. Raymon Reifer has been around for a while and has proved to be a real competitor with both bat and ball – qualities that will add great value to the team.”‘Not a fun tour’Wayne Lewis, secretary of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) said the players had been anxious, but were confident having heard the measures taken by both the ECB and CWI to ensure their safety.”They are a bit nervous, but when it was demonstrated to them and disseminated to them as to exactly how the protocol will go in terms being in the bubble (they were fine),” Lewis told ESPNcricinfo. “They will have to make a sacrifice because they will not be allowed to leave their hotel. They will not be able to go shopping, go partying, visit anyone, receive visitors.”When they are not at the hotel they are at the cricket ground. When they are not at the cricket ground they are back at the hotel. It is a big ask. It is a big sacrifice that they are being asked to make to facilitate this series going ahead. It is going to be tough on them. It is not a fun tour. But they understand that.”West Indies squad to tour England: Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shamarh Brooks, John Campbell, Roston Chase, Rahkeem Cornwall, Shane Dowrich, Chemar Holder, Jason Holder (captain), Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Raymon Reifer, Kemar RoachReserve players: Sunil Ambris, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Keon Harding, Kyle Mayers, Preston McSween, Marquino Mindley, Shane Moseley, Anderson Phillip, Oshane Thomas, Jomel Warrican

Emery could now drop Aston Villa star after 5/10 display vs Brighton

Aston Villa suffered a European hangover on Sunday as they were defeated 1-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.

Despite the loss, Villa are still in control of their destiny when it comes to securing a Champions League spot for next season, seven points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, albeit the London side have a game in hand.

Unai Emery will have to motivate the players ahead of their Conference League semi-final against Olympiacos on Thursday evening, although several who started over the weekend could find themselves on the bench, most notably Moussa Diaby.

Moussa Diaby’s game in numbers vs Brighton

The Frenchman registered a goal and an assist during the first leg last week, but this display was sandwiched in between two poor performances in the Premier League.

Against Chelsea, he came on for the injured Youri Tielemans, before being subbed off with ten minutes left, failing to have a positive impact at all.

On Sunday, the winger was once again anonymous during a Premier League match. Not only did he take just 17 touches during his time on the pitch, but the former Bayer Leverkusen gem also completed only seven of his 12 attempted passes and managed only one shot on target during the game.

His defensive output was also poor. Diaby won zero of his two ground duels contested along with losing possession six times and being dribbled past once. In a match where he was expected to shine, carrying on from midweek, the player looked tired.

Moussa Diaby

Indeed, he was given a match rating of 5/10 by Birmingham Mail journalist John Townley for his performance. Does Emery drop him for the second leg? Or will he stick with the French winger in the hope that he improves?

Moussa Diaby’s statistics this season

Despite scoring ten goals and grabbing eight assists, It's fair to say Diaby hasn’t quite lived up to his staggering £51.9m transfer fee.

Out of his 51 appearances for the club this term, the 24-year-old has started only 33, with Emery occasionally using him as an impact sub.

Among his teammates, Diaby does rank fourth for goals and assists (13) in the top flight, while also ranking second for shots on target per match (0.6), first for big chances created (12) and fifth for key passes per game (1.2), proving that he is one of Villa’s most dangerous attacking threats.

After this poor display against Brighton, however, Emery could well drop him to the bench against the Greek side, perhaps using him as a late sub if things are close.

Moussa Diaby

Should Villa qualify for the Champions League, Diaby could use this as a platform to really showcase his talents and rediscover the incredible form which saw him shine for Leverkusen – registering 97 goal contributions in just 172 matches – between 2019 and 2023.

The Midlands side will have to come out firing on Thursday. If they manage to score an early goal, the club have a good chance of making it through to the final.

Since the inception of the Premier League, several legends of the game have graced the competition. From Manchester United legends Scholes and Ryan Giggs, Liverpool's Gerrard and Xabi Alonso, Chelsea's Lampard and Claude Makelele to contemporary greats like Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne – the English top flight has been the home to world-class midfielders.

To pick the ultimate Premier League midfielder is a daunting task and often one's choice is eclipsed by fandom and loyalty towards a particular club. However, Maddison took little time to pick his favourite among Luka Modric, Gerrard, De Bruyne and Lampard.

WHAT MADDISON SAID

In an interview with Maddison explained his choice and said: "I'm going to go for Steven Gerrard. Yeah, the ultimate midfielder and he literally was the ultimate midfielder, he could do everything."

However, Maddison believes De Bruyne would surpass Gerrad once he hangs up his boots.

"The only thing, because he's still playing now, Kevin de Bruyne. I think when he's finished and when we look back, I think he's going to be number one," he said. "What he can do with the ball is just like ridiculous."

Joe Root calls for patience as Jofra Archer struggles to keep up with Test pace

Captain says fast bowler will be backed by team so long as he learns from his mistakes

Andrew Miller08-Aug-2020Joe Root says that England will give Jofra Archer all the patience and understanding necessary to bring out the full potential of his Test career, after an at-times subdued display with the ball in the first Test against Pakistan at Emirates Old Trafford.Despite claiming four wickets in the match, including an important first-innings haul of 3 for 59, Archer’s performance was lacklustre compared to the standards that he set in last summer’s Ashes. His pace was consistently in the mid-80s – compared to the peak speed of 96mph he touched on debut at Lord’s last summer – and when challenged on that point in a mid-match interview with Sky, he remarked that the wicket was not one on which to “bend your back”, and that “no-one is a robot”.However, the scrutiny comes after a tough few weeks for Archer, who has been a first-choice pick for each of England’s four Tests this summer, but had to be dropped on the morning of the second Test against West Indies when it transpired that he had breached England’s bio-secure bubble with a visit to his flat in Brighton en route from Southampton to Manchester.Archer subsequently spent a week in isolation in his room while being screened for Covid-19, during which time he suffered racist abuse on social media. And reflecting on his difficult month, Root said the England team had to continue to rally round their fast bowler and give him the support he needs to live up to the heightened expectations that surround him.”We just need to be very understanding that he’s still very young in his Test career, and that there will be mistakes and lessons to be learnt,” said Root. “But as long as he’s willing to learn from them and to keep looking to improve and get better, we will continue to see very special things from him.”Archer, of course, secured his place in cricket history at Lord’s last July, when he held his nerve in the World Cup final Super Over to secure England’s maiden title, at the end of a campaign in which he was the team’s leading bowler with 20 wickets at 23.05.He then added a further 22 at 20.27 in his maiden Ashes campaign, including two six-wicket hauls in each of England’s wins at Headingley and The Oval, before a tough winter in New Zealand and South Africa culminated in an elbow fracture that he hinted in his Sky interview is still playing on his mind.”Just remember that, under very high pressure at the start of his career, he’s performed extremely well,” Root added. “He has done very special things against Australia in an Ashes series, right off the back of a World Cup under a heavy workload.”He’s capable of winning games, there’s no doubt about that. He might have a quiet game every now and again, and he might not always get it right. But there will be times as well when it turns up and wins you a game in a session, and turns a game on its head.ALSO READ: Butler feared he was playing final game before crucial knock”We’ve got to keep encouraging him to have that mindset, to have that confidence in his own ability, and when he gets an opportunity, to really make an impact,” Root added. “To take a spell by the scruff of the neck and hammer it home. Because he’s more than capable of doing that.”And yet, there were occasions at Old Trafford that might have been tailor-made for the sort of impact spells about which Root was talking – most notably, the third evening during Pakistan’s second innings, when a burst of Archer at his most fiery might have driven home England’s advantage. Instead Chris Woakes was called upon to rough up Shadab Khan with a short-pitched spell, before Ben Stokes – a fitness doubt before the match – was thrown the ball to claim two late wickets with his characteristic aggression.”We all get very excited when [Archer]’s bowling up around 90 miles an hour, and certainly that will cause batters a lot of trouble,” Root said. “But there is more to it than that. And that we’ve got to understand that he has a bigger package to offer.”But you also have to look at different passages of the game, and when guys have bowled and when they need a little bit longer to get ready before they come back.”On that wicket, as two-paced as it was, it doesn’t matter who’s bowling. If it’s 80mph or 90mph, it’s always dangerous bowling short, it’s just making sure you get in the right area. We went a different way on that occasion. And it worked for a period of time.”Jofra is a huge talent, we all know that, and he’s not always going to get it right. He’s very young still and he’s still learning and there is definitely a lot of much winning performances in him.”With the second Test getting underway at the Ageas Bowl on Friday, the strong likelihood is that England will ring the changes to an attack that remained unchanged after the series victory against West Indies.Sussex’s Ollie Robinson has already been withdrawn from Sussex’s county fixture against Kent and will link up with the squad on Monday, with a view to a potential Test debut, maybe at the expense of James Anderson, who is likely to be rested after two games in a row. Mark Wood is also a possible inclusion, having not featured since England’s first-Test loss to West Indies last month.”The extra day definitely will help,” Root said, after England wrapped up the first Test on the fourth afternoon. “I think we’ll have to be quite smart, as we were in the previous series, and we’ll have to see how everyone pulls up.”But we are in such a good position, with so many great options that all bases will be covered. We should have a very strong side, whatever the make-up of the Test side is.”
