Bid coming as Tottenham convinced they can seal cut-price £35 million move

Tottenham are convinced they can sign an "underrated" player for around £35 million, and they're poised to make an offer for him very soon.

Spurs targeting new number six and other summer signings

Ange Postecoglou didn't hold back in his assessment of the current Spurs squad recently, as he called for the Lilywhites to implement "drastic" change when the transfer window reopens.

"We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about," said Postecoglou on the summer transfer window.

Uncertainty surrounds the Spurs legend right now.

"It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey. It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone.

"Whether it’s Liverpool or Arsenal, if you look at the beginning of their journeys, by the time they win the competition or have success, the team’s almost unrecognisable. That’s the reality if you change [and we’ve] done a major pivot here, so that definitely is the case [for us], yeah."

Reliable Tottenham insider Paul O'Keefe has revealed that Spurs are open to selling over a dozen senior players as well, with Emerson Royal and Yves Bissouma among the new names to be linked with an N17 exit recently.

Their potential sales could help to fund necessary upgrades for Postecoglou, with The Times reporting that Tottenham want to bring in a new centre-back, midfielder and striker. A new number six will be particularly important, as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been widely tipped to leave Spurs for a while now.

If both the Dane and Bissouma end up departing N17 when the transfer window reopens on June 14, Postecoglou will need a replacement. Atalanta star Ederson is a player of interest to Tottenham, as well as the heavily linked Conor Gallagher.

Tottenham convinced they can strike £35 million deal for Gallagher

According to TEAMtalk this week, the latter star from Chelsea is very much still on their radar. The west Londoners, in their bid to comply with PSR, are faced with the difficult decision of selling the 24-year-old – or risk losing the "underrated" ace for nothing when his contract expires next year.

Conor Gallagher

Chelsea are apparently ready to sanction his sale, and Tottenham believe they could sign Gallagher for £35 million due to their rivals' financial situation. It is believed the Lilywhites are poised to make an offer for him in the coming weeks as a result, with the former boss Mauricio Pochettino "fuming" that Gallagher could be let go.

Crushing blow for Arsenal! Mikel Arteta confirms Gunners captain Martin Odegaard has suffered 'significant' ankle injury

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says captain Martin Odegaard has suffered a "significant" ankle injury after the midfielder was hurt on international duty.

The attacking midfielder sustained an ankle injury in Norway's Nations League clash with Austria earlier this month, something that reduced the 25-year-old to tears. Now manager Arteta has revealed the former Real Madrid man will have a spell on the sidelines – but hoped it wasn't something that would go on for months.

The Spaniard told reporters on Wednesday: "After recent scans the scans showed that he’s [Odegaard] got some damage especially on one of the ligaments in the ankle. It’s something quite significant so we’re going to lose him for a while."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

This is a monumental blow for Odegaard, Arteta, and Arsenal's hopes of winning silverware this season. The Gunners skipper is vital to the club's success and without him, a huge hole will be left in Arteta's team. The Norwegian scored 11 goals and bagged as many assists last season, so finding someone to fill his shoes will be a tall order. Nobody can unlock a defence like he can at Arsenal, who could be severely weakened going forward.

Sussex become Tim Murtagh victims after Jack Carson's first-class best

Middlesex strike with new ball after teenage spinner grabs four wickets

ECB Reporters Network23-Aug-2020A devastating late spell from Tim Murtagh fired Middlesex back into contention in their Bob Willis Trophy clash against Sussex at Radlett.Murtagh, the 39-year-old seamer, grabbed three wickets, including two in two balls – with Miguel Cummins claiming the other – as Sussex crumbled to 4 for 4 in their second innings, eventually reaching 33 for 4 at stumps. That left the visitors holding an overall advantage of 123 after bowling their hosts out for 203 earlier in the day, with teenage offspinner Jack Carson returning career-best figures of 4-46.Middlesex had slumped to 80 for 6 before John Simpson, debutant Blake Cullen and Cummins all rallied with the bat to keep their side within striking distance.Ollie Robinson and Mitch Claydon soon had Middlesex on the back foot when the home side began their first innings, taking advantage of morning cloud cover to keep the scoring rate to a minimum. Claydon sent down four consecutive maidens, while Robinson continued his persistent habit of taking Middlesex wickets as he trapped Sam Robson leg before with his fifth ball of the day.Max Holden and Nick Gubbins dug in to face a testing examination, with Holden scoring just a solitary run from his first 36 balls, but the opener seemed to have all the hard work behind him when he fell to Sussex debutant Will Sheffield. The 19-year-old left-armer had Holden caught at first slip and Middlesex were in deeper trouble when skipper Stevie Eskinazi was leg before to Robinson in the next over. Two further lbw decisions went in Sussex’s favour before lunch – both accompanied by a whiff of controversy as Robbie White fell to a ball from Claydon that looked high and wide and Gubbins was given out to a Carson delivery which seemed to be drifting beyond leg stump.Carson collected his second wicket early in the afternoon session – pinning Martin Andersson plumb lbw on the back foot after a breezy 17 – but Simpson and Cullen dug their side out of a hole with their seventh-wicket stand of 70.The Middlesex pair went for their shots, particularly Simpson, who rattled off a string of fours – the best of them a straight drive off Delray Rawlins that raised the 50 partnership.Simpson’s innings of 48 included nine fours overall before he was eventually dismissed by Claydon, bowling him with a quicker delivery that nipped back from outside off stump. However, Cullen and Cummins maintained the Middlesex recovery with a spirited partnership of 51, either side of an hour’s delay following a downpour during the tea interval.Cullen batted with a maturity well beyond his 18 years, occupying the crease for almost two and a half hours for a solid 34, while Cummins counter-attacked with three boundaries in his 25.The pair secured a batting bonus point before Middlesex’s last three wickets tumbled in rapid succession, with Cullen leg before to Claydon and Carson collecting the scalps of Cummins and Murtagh in the space of three deliveries. That left Sussex to face an awkward period of 12 overs before the close – and Murtagh struck in the third of them, moving the ball back at Phil Salt to bowl him through the gate.Murtagh then trapped Harry Finch plumb in front of the stumps and had Tom Clark taken at first slip off an outside edge for a first-ball duck before Cummins had Aaron Thomason lbw, also without scoring, in the next over. The damage could have been even worse for Sussex, had Robson been able to hang on when Ben Brown offered a slip chance off Cummins – but the skipper and Rawlins saw their side through to stumps.

Tottenham join Crystal Palace in race for Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham

Tottenham chiefs are believed to be considering a summer move for an "incredible" British youngster with a big future in the game, according to reliable journalist Ed Aarons.

Tottenham transfer news

The upcoming summer transfer window is a crucial one in north London, as Ange Postecoglou looks to take his team up a gear and make them a Premier League top four outfit. That won't be easy, considering the level of competition at the top of the table, but new faces will certainly help.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez has emerged as a great option to come in and finally fill the void left by Harry Kane, following a season that saw him score 23 goals for the Dutch giants in the Eredivisie. There is the threat that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot could look to take the Mexican to Anfield, although that remains to be seen, and Spurs are seen as the current favourites to snap him up.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

Another exciting signing for Postecoglou is reportedly Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who could feel that this summer is the ideal time to move on and enjoy a new challenge at a bigger club. He could feature prominently at Euro 2024, should he make England's final squad, giving Spurs fans a good chance to see him more regularly but also perhaps raising his price tag.

It looks as though the north Londoners are looking to add firepower in attacking areas this summer, with Serhou Guirassy also linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Incredibly, the Guinean scored 28 goals in just 25 Bundesliga starts for VfB Stuttgart in 2023/24, highlighting what a ruthless addition he could be.

Tottenham want "incredible" British teenager

According to Aarons on X, Tottenham are "interested" in signing Sunderland ace Jobe Bellingham for at least £20m this summer, among other Premier League clubs, but the Black Cats are holding firm.

"Understand that Sunderland are determined to try and keep Jobe Bellingham this summer. Tottenham, Brentford, Crystal Palace and several clubs in Europe are interested in the 18-year-old, with Sunderland believed to want a fee in excess of £20m if they are to sell."

The Bellingham name has become world-renowned because of the incredible rise of Jude Bellingham, but his younger brother is an outstanding prospect in his own right, already impressing so much for Sunderland at just 18 years of age.

Last season, he started 43 of the Black Cats' 46 Championship matches, scoring seven goals from midfield in that time, while former Sunderland Republic of Ireland striker Niall Quinn has hailed him as "incredible".

While Bellingham's current club will do all they can to keep hold of such a prized asset, the lure of moving to Spurs could be great for him, feeling that he has already outgrown Sunderland and is now ready to chance his arm at a Premier League side.

Planning for the long-term is vital for Postecoglou, and if he could sign Bellingham, Tottenham could have a key midfielder sorted for the next decade or so, at least.

"Exceptional" talent Man Utd want to keep set for Serie A move this summer

Manchester United have been dealt a blow as it has emerged that a player they were keen to keep is in fact on the verge of leaving Old Trafford this summer.

Red Devils expecting major overhaul

It is set to be a summer of change under the new Sir Jim Ratcliffe ownership at Manchester United. Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial have already confirmed their departures when their contracts run out at the end of the season, while Sofyan Amrabat's loan spell will also end at that point, leaving Manchester United with a decision to make over his future.

It has previously been reported that just about every Manchester United player is up for sale this summer, including the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, as the club look to rebuild after a disappointing eighth place finish in the Premier League.

100% chance of leaving: Man Utd dud could explode like Forlan when he exits

He is available for around £40m

ByJoe Nuttall Jun 11, 2024

It still remains unclear who will lead that rebuild, with Erik ten Hag remaining manager after his FA Cup win over Manchester City but talks ongoing over potential successors, which suggests that a decision is yet to be made on the Dutchman.

Just three players are considered "off limits" this summer, in the shape of young trio Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund, but otherwise there is a desire to bring down the average age of the squad and the wage bill, while placing their trust in younger players and continuing their proud tradition of using academy players. However, they have been dealt a blow in their bid to do so.

Forson agrees to leave

That comes as young talent Omari Forson is set to make the switch to Serie A side Monza this summer, according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano. The teenager made his Manchester United debut in the FA Cup in January, and went onto make seven appearances across the course of the season, grabbing an assist in the process.

He has been hailed as having an "exceptional resilience" as he helped the Red Devils win the FA Youth Cup in 2022, where he featured alongside Garnacho and Mainoo but was an unused substitute for the final.

“On the pitch he was part of our successful FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2022", academy director Nick Cox explained. “Interestingly, Omari didn’t feature heavily in the cup run but showed exceptional resilience, and that’s a reminder that the journey isn’t always smooth and straightforward."

And he is someone that the Red Devils would like to keep, with reports claiming that the club have offered "competitive contracts" to the youngster in the "hope he will sign a new deal", with his current contract set to expire this summer.

However, that now seems unlikely, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that the winger is on the verge of joining Serie A side Monza, where he will be hoping for more regular opportunities to showcase his abilities than he was afforded at Old Trafford.

He is expected to sign a four-year deal with the Italian side, which will rob Manchester United of any significant transfer fee, though they will be afforded compensation for his departure.

With Amad Diallo waiting in the wings, his departure will not be too sorely felt, but it will feel like a missed opportunity to once again utilise the famed Manchester United academy.

At 39 years of age, the evergreen Portugal international is showing no sign of slowing down just yet. He hit 50 goals for his Saudi employers last season and has been back on target for club and country in 2024-25 – with more history being made along the way.

Ronaldo’s latest outing saw him net the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Al Rayyan in the AFC Champions League, with said strike recorded on the day that would have seen his father – who passed away in 2005 – turn 71.

WHAT RONALDO SAID

An emotional Ronaldo told reporters afterwards of exploits that continue to amaze and need to be savoured before retirement becomes an option that can no longer be avoided: “We had an excellent performance, we created a lot of chances. Today's goal had a different flavour, I would have loved my father to be alive because today is his birthday.

“I still love playing football and I know I don't have much time left on the pitch. The most important thing is not to be considered the best player or to win awards. The important thing is to enjoy it and to be useful to the club and the national team. Records are part of me and I'm used to breaking them. I've felt pressure since the first day and I think I will feel it until the last.”

Acting president Beresford Williams, five others resign from Cricket South Africa board

Development follows request from the members’ council for the entire board to step down

Firdose Moonda25-Oct-2020At least six members of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) board have acceded to the request of the nembers’ council – the highest decision-making body in South African cricket, made up of the 14 provincial affiliate presidents – and stood down from their positions. The list included acting president Beresford Williams, who took over from Chris Nenzani in August, leaving CSA without a president for now.The development came after the members’ council had asked the entire board to step down last Thursday at a meeting convened to deliberate on the best course of action for cricket in the country and CSA. At that time, no board members had offered to resign, and CSA also issued a statement confirming it. However, at a second meeting on Sunday, Williams, Donovan May, Tebogo Siko, Angelo Carolissen, John Mogodi and Dheven Dharmalingam quit from their positions. All but Dharmalingam had been elected to the board via their provinces and, therefore, were non-independent members of the board, while Dharmalingam is an independent director, appointed in May this year. Dharmalingham was also the only board member to indicate a willingness to offer his resignation, if the members’ council requested it, on Friday. He has since made good on his word. That left just four members remaining on the board, of which only one, Zola Thamae (vice-president of Free State) comes from within the cricket structure. The other three, Marius Schoeman, Eugenia Kula-Ameyaw and Vuyokazi Memani-Sedile, are all independent directors. ESPNcricinfo understands more board resignations may come before Tuesday, when CSA is scheduled to present South Africa’s sports minister, Nathi Mthethwa, reasons why he should not intervene in their affairs.Meanwhile, Rihan Richards, president of the Northern Cape Cricket, has been named president of the members’ council, which leaves CSA without a president at this stage. CSA confirmed the six resignations on their Twitter account and issued this statement: “As mentioned in Friday’s press statement, the CSA Board met this week & discussed various strategies that would best position CSA. One of these approaches was that if the Board would need to step down for the best interest of CSA & cricket as a whole, the Board would then do so.”It remains unclear where this leaves CSA as the embattled organisation charts the way forward following a tumultuous year. Mthethwa is understood to want the entire CSA board to step aside, in compliance with the instructions from the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the umbrella body under which all South African sports federations operate. SASCOC has also asked for CSA’s executive to temporarily stand down while it conducts an investigation into CSA’s affairs, and unrestricted access to the forensic report which CSA used to fire former CEO Thabang Moroe, and which implicates, amongst others, Williams. CSA has refused to meet those demands, causing SASCOC to refer the matter to Mthethwa.According to the National Sport and Recreation Act in South Africa, Mthethwa can, among other things, withdraw funding for CSA and strip it of recognition as the game’s governing body in the country. He may not go those extremes, especially after approving an incoming tour of England next month, but may still want CSA to commit to a task team being appointed to run the game while an inquiry is held to its governance.

Spurs could forget Eze by signing £51m “special talent"

Tottenham Hotspur didn't qualify for the Champions League last season but Ange Postecoglou has planted the seed for a prosperous tenure.

There is plenty of promise about this Spurs side but also plenty to address, and transfer activity must be conducted with a flourish this summer to make further improvements next term.

Eberechi Eze has been at the forefront of transfer rumours in recent days but Postecoglou's side would be wise to line up alternatives with Manchester United also on the hunt.

Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze

It looks like Daniel Levy and Co have done exactly that.

Spurs transfer news

According to Spanish sources earlier this week – via TEAMtalk – Tottenham are eager to sign Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo and have even made an opening offer to the La Liga side, though it has fallen below the Japanese's €60m (£51m) release clause.

Takefusa Kubo

Kubo is a versatile and dynamic wide player who could add to a Tottenham team in need of some added depth, with European football on the cards after spending the 2023/24 campaign confined to domestic duty.

Takefusa Kubo's season in numbers

Kubo signed for Sociedad from Real Madrid on a five-year deal in 2022, having completed a series of loan spells across Spain after joining Los Blancos, never completing an appearance before moving to his current club on a permanent deal.

The 23-year-old might not be the most prolific of wingers – he has only posted 16 goals and 14 assists across 85 outings for Sociedad – but he is electric and enthusiastic and would offer competition for Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski down the Lilywhites' right flank.

Evidencing this: as per FBref, he ranks among the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries, the top 18% for successful take-ons and the top 17% for shot-creating actions per 90.

Dubbed a "special talent" by journalist John Bunting, Kubo would bring some really impressive qualities to the Tottenham first team, and one can only imagine the partnership that could be forged with James Maddison.

Imagine Kubo & James Maddison

Maddison signed for Spurs from Leicester City in a £40m deal last summer and started life in London with a bang, winning the Premier League's Player of the Month award for August and leading journalist Henry Winter to dub him a "nightmare for defenders".

Averaging 2.4 key passes per game in the Premier League last season, the 27-year-old's unfortunate ankle injury suffered in November stifled a blistering start, but with some impactful additions welcomed in the months to come, it could be a positive fresh start.

For a speed demon like Kubo to have such string-pulling expertise beside him will only serve Tottenham well, with Maddison ranking among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 1% for shot-creating actions and progressive passes and the top 2% for passes attempted per 90.

Spurs are eager to sign a ball-carrying whiz in Eze, but if they fail in that pursuit, Kubo could be the perfect player to strengthen Tottenham's wings.

Top-heavy Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad look for right XIs, rise in points table

KL Rahul the anchor a worry for Kings XI, while Sunrisers could play an overseas allrounder

Sreshth Shah07-Oct-20207:14

Is it time Kings XI found a way to fit Mujeeb into their XI?

Big pictureTwo teams that, on paper, are heavily reliant on their top order face off in Dubai – it’s Kings XI Punjab against Sunrisers Hyderabad, both teams in the bottom three of the IPL 2020 points table at this stage. The Kings XI have lost their last three games and are last among the eight sides despite KL Rahul (302) and Mayank Agarwal(272) being among the top three run-scorers this season. The pair’s success – they have scored over 63% of the team’s runs so far – has meant that the middle order has been left a bit undercooked. And with no bowler apart from Mohammed Shami and Ravi Bishnoi quite hitting their groove, many team combinations (15 players in five games) have been tried – and discarded – leaving them with an unsettled-looking XI. They need to break their run of defeats urgently, or risk going another season without a final-four finish, having last reached there in 2014.Rahul, despite all the runs, is a concern too. With strike rates of 122 in balls 1-10, 119 in 11-20, 103 in 21-30 and 123 in 31-40, the downside of putting a price on his wicket and being an anchor is that the team is being forced to underutilise their big-hitting resources – Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Sarfaraz Khan and sometimes James Neesham – down the order. As for their bowling, Shami and Sheldon Cottrell have found the early breakthroughs to make them the best powerplay bowling side going around. But despite that, the Kings XI has taken two or more wickets only once between overs seven and 15 so far, and the lack of breakthroughs have meant conceding plenty in the death overs. Will Chris Jordan keep his place, or can they finally find space for Mujeeb Ur Rahman? The Sunrisers, currently sixth, are better off – but only just – having learnt that Bhuvneshwar Kumar is out for the season following a thigh injury he picked up against the Chennai Super Kings.David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Kane Williamson and Manish Pandey have contributed in a few games, but none of them has been consistent. And on days when two or more of them fail, the pressure shifts on their very young middle and lower order. While that has meant the likes of Priyam Garg, Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad have had the chances to impress, the Sunrisers could consider allrounders Mohammad Nabi or Fabian Allen to add a bit of experience. That, though, would most likely mean leaving out Williamson. In Kumar’s absence, their pace unit is inexperienced too.Overall, there’s no clear favourite entering the contest. Both sides need to get going before the early movers break away from the pack, and Thursday’s contest could be the start of that – for one of the two teams. In the newsPrithvi Raj Yarra has been named Kumar’s replacement, but it may be a while before he gets a game, especially if the more experienced fellow left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed – who missed the Sunrisers’ game over the weekend – is fit.Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s exit robs the Sunrisers Hyderabad attack of a lot of experience•BCCILikely XIsSunrisers Hyderabad: 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Priyam Garg, 6 Abhishek Sharma, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Sandeep Sharma, 10 Siddarth Kaul, 11 T NatarajanKings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul (capt), 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Mandeep Singh, 4 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Sarfaraz Khan, 7 Chris Jordan/James Neesham, 8 Harpreet Brar/M Ashwin, 9 Sheldon Cottrell, 10 Mohammad Shami, 11 Ravi BishnoiStats that matter Last season, the Sunrisers’ opening pair of Warner and Bairstow got over 60% of the team’s runs, scoring at a strike rate of 164 while getting three half-century and four century stands. This season, they have just a solitary fifty-plus stand so far. Among batsmen with at least four innings, Bairstow (105) and Warner (111) are ahead of only Sunil Narine (87) on the list of poorest powerplay strike rates. Agarwal has faced only four googlies this season, but has been dismissed twice by them; 57% of Rashid Khan’s deliveries this season have been googlies.
