Aston Villa have hit gold on £0 signing who’s now worth as much as Onana

Aston Villa’s summer transfer activity looks set to reach new highs as they appear to be closing in on a move for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Having lost Douglas Luiz to Juventus a few weeks ago, Unai Emery was certainly in the market for another central midfielder as a replacement, especially considering the Midlands side are set to make their first foray into the Champions League group stages next season.

How much Aston Villa are paying for Amadou Onana

A deal to sign Onana from Everton is likely to cost Villa a staggering £50m, just shy of the club-record fee they paid to sign Moussa Diaby a year ago from Bayer Leverkusen.

It is evident that playing in Europe’s premier club competition was a big incentive for the midfielder, who featured in all of Belgium’s four matches at Euro 2024, and the signing signals a massive statement of intent from Emery.

However, the Spaniard already has a player in his current first-team squad who is worth the same as Onana, one who could secure the club a substantial profit should he be sold in the next few weeks.

Dream for Onana: Aston Villa could sign £34m “duel monster”

The Midlands outfit has been busy indeed this summer.

Jacob Ramsey might not have made as much of an impact as anticipated last term, mostly due to injury issues, but the youngster has shown plenty of potential since making his debut for the club during the 2018/19 campaign.

The Englishman emerged through the academy before establishing himself as a regular in the first-team squad during the 2020/21 season, making 22 appearances for Villa in the top flight.

The following two seasons saw Ramsey miss just seven league games, scoring a mightily impressive 12 goals and grabbing eight assists in the process, slowly becoming a key player in the squad.

The 23-year-old made just 16 Premier League appearances last term, yet this didn’t stop interest from other clubs, as Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing the midfielder this summer.

Indeed, Emery has slapped a price tag of £50m on one of his prized assets in order to deter any bids, particularly with the fact that Luiz has already departed the club in recent weeks.

The 2024/25 campaign could be an important one for Ramsey as he looks to integrate himself back into the starting XI after a hit-or-miss 12 months which saw him miss 27 matches for Villa through injury.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

This price tag is the same as what the Midlands side are about to spend bringing Onana to Villa Park, which certainly suggests that they have struck gold on their homegrown talent who has firmly established himself as one of the most gifted midfielders in the Premier League.

Should a bid in this region arrive over the next few days, it might be tough for Emery to turn it down, but if the young midfielder continues to improve, there is no reason why he can't increase this valuation by enjoying a wonderful 2024/25 season for Villa.

The City manager and the Dutch centre-back were seen having an animated discussion following the final whistle of the Premier League clash on November 9, which the Seagulls won 2-1.

Guardiola was asked about the exchange, and explained that he praised the Netherlands international's strength against star striker Erling Haaland and gave him some advice. A week later, Van Hecke has given his recollection of the encounter.

WHAT VAN HECKE SAID

"After the game, City manager Pep Guardiola came to me. It was a nice conversation: he congratulated me on the win and said we had played well," he told . "Then he talked about my last duel with Haaland, where he thought I should have stayed on my feet. I replied that I went down but I got up again straight away – and that was it. We continued talking quietly in the players' tunnel.

"Because the conversation on the pitch was in full view, everyone asked about it. Fellow players made jokes about it, everyone wanted to know what exactly had been said. But Guardiola was also very complimentary, he said I was a good player. So I thought it was fine."

While Haaland scored the opening goal, he was unable to provide a result for his side as Brighton fought back to steal the three points, and Van Hecke's Netherlands team-mates were looking for the Norwegian forward in his pockets days later.

"A few guys at Oranje looked in my pocket on Monday night as a joke, to see if Erling Haaland was supposedly still in it," he added. "But I have to be critical. We won against City, but Haaland did score, so he wasn't completely in my pocket. It went really well on Saturday. I played well, and when you win 2-1 against Manchester City, you automatically get a lot of compliments."

All the colour and analyses from day three of the final Test of the series

Alan Gardner06-Mar-2021*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local3.47pm: Ashwin completes 30th five-for, India are WTC finalistsIndia have wrapped up a convincing innings victory to seal a 3-1 series result and a spot in the World Test Championship final, after England collapsed against spin for the final time on tour. Although Washington Sundar was left high and dry four runs short of a maiden Test hundred, Axar Patel hounded the visitors for his fourth five-for of an immensely impressive debut series to help confirm the inevitable midway through the evening session on day three.3.40pm: Lawrence reaches fiftyA second Test fifty for Dan Lawrence, who is one of perhaps only two England batsman to come out of this tour of Asia with his credentials enhanced, alongside Joe Root. He struggled in the Chennai Tests, looking ill-suited to the No. 3 role that he has only rarely filled at domestic level, but with the pressure off at No. 7 he has been positive and – generally – calm in this Test.Dan Lawrence sweeps in the first-innings•Getty ImagesHe’s England’s top-scorer in the match, and Sampath Bandarupalli tells me that he’s also the only Englishman to make a second-innings half-century in the series.Jack Leach survived on review a couple of overs ago, but has now been caught well at slip by Ajinkya Rahane, and India are a wicket away from reaching the inaugural WTC final.3.10pm: Patel five-for!Axar Patel celebrates a wicket with an excited Virat Kohli•BCCIAxar Patel’s storming debut series continues with a fourth five-wicket haul in three Tests! Bess doesn’t last long, feathering a big swipe through to Pant, meaning Patel now has 27 at 10.07. That dismissal also means that 102 wickets have fallen to spinners in the series – the third-highest of all time in Tests. Two more and India are going to the WTC final, baby!3.02pm: JinxedThat’s how to take wickets, boys… Having bobbed along nicely for a bit, Foakes suddenly pokes at one from Patel and diverts a catch to slip. Ajinkya Rahane didn’t look too confident that he had caught it, diving across to his left, and the soft signal from the umpires was ‘not out’. But replays showed him scooping it up safely, and that’s the stand broken. Seems a long, long time ago (the first innings in Chennai, in fact) that England last managed a fifty partnership.3pm: End gameAxar Patel bowls•Saikat Das/BCCISome jiggery pokery going on, Ashwin replacing Sundar after one over, bowling two and then deciding he wants a change of ends – so Sundar gets another over, before then being switched for Patel. Still plenty for the spinners to work with out there, even though the ball is 40-plus overs old – good bounce in particular, with Lawrence’s splice and gloves wearing a few. But these two are ticking along quite nicely for England, bringing the deficit down towards 50.2.40pm: BreatheWashington Sundar is on for a bowl after tea, and who wouldn’t want to see him bag a few cheap wickets to make up for that missed hundred? Well, apart from the England team, coaches, supporters, etc. You sense the tourists know the jig is almost up, but there are still individual points to be made for the likes of Dan Lawrence, Ben Foakes and Dom Bess, all of whom could be out of the XI come England’s next Test, against New Zealand in June.2.10pm: TeaAxar Patel celebrates a wicket•Getty Images
India rounded up six wickets in the session between lunch and tea to close in on victory and a place in the World Test Championship final. R Ashwin and Axar Patel shared them evenly, as England’s struggles against spin seemed set to bring a premature end to the fourth Test.Trailing by 160 on first innings, England’s openers walked out having negotiated a three-over spell before the break. But it took barely any time for India to start making inroads as Ashwin struck with his fourth and fifth balls – Zak Crawley was taken at slip by one that went straight on, then Jonny Bairstow turned to leg slip to collect a golden duck.Dom Sibley was a little unfortunate, caught via a rebound from short leg on the sweep, to give Patel his first, before Ben Stokes presented another simple catch to leg slip. After a brief period of calm, Ollie Pope was stumped down the leg side by Rishabh Pant, and Joe Root then fell lbw to Ashwin in the following over.England limped to tea with Dan Lawrence and Ben Foakes at the crease, but facing a battle to take the game into a fourth day, never mind make India bat again.2pm: Commemorative hats offSunil Gavaskar celebrating the 50th anniversary of his Test debut•BCCIIndia aren’t quite celebrating victory yet, but there’s a demob mood in the Star commentary box, where Sunil Gavaskar is having a jolly nice Test debut 50th anniversary (if that’s a thing). Sunny would doubtless have plenty to say about English batting techniques, but thankfully everyone seems more interested in cake…1.40pm: Bang-bang! India closing inWe have a period of quiet, though Ollie Pope looked skittish throughout and eventually becomes a third wicket for Patel. Another fine bit of work behind the stumps from Rishabh Pant, who is another genuine contender for Man of the Series. He managed to cling on as the ball practically hit him in the collar bone, then broke the bails before it squirmed out of his grasp – his fifth stumping in four Tests. And then Ashwin ices the cake, trapping Root bang in front on the back foot, straightforward decision for Nitin Menon (despite a confident review from Root). And with that wicket, Ashwin joins the great SF Barnes as the only men to twice take more than 30 wickets in a series of four matches or fewer. Decent company (though Barnes had a far better moustache).1.15pm: Last orders?Virat Kohli is thrilled as R Ashwin strikes•Getty ImagesHas it only been an hour since lunch? England take drinks on 46 for 4, Root the only batsman in double-figures. Still 115 more needed to make India bat again. Even the barman in the last-chance saloon would be looking at his watch and thinking about calling time.1.05pm: Vote early, vote often

12.55pm: The band plays on…England sinking fast, Ben Stokes scooping tamely around the corner – a catch for the lurking Virat Kohli. How’s that WTC final spot looking now, eh, Virat? Root, much as he has done throughout England’s Test winter, stands alone on the poop deck, but this time he’s belting out a mournful tune. At least if they lose by an innings, no one can catch him here.

12.40pm: When it rains, it poursAxar Patel celebrates a wicket with Virat Kohli•Getty ImagesThird wicket for India, Axar Patel strikes – although it’s a tad unlucky for Dom Sibley, who pounds a sweep into the knee of Shubman Gill at short leg, only for it to loop up to the wicketkeeper for a simple catch! We’ve seen that sort of dismissal a few times during recent Tests – Dasun Shanaka, I think, actually hit one into Bairstow himself in Galle – but it doesn’t change what goes in the scorebook. Chances of India having to bat again receding by the minute.12.35pm: It’s canard to bat out there…With 31 ducks and counting, this has been the most quack-happy four-match series in Test history, reports my colleague Sampath Bandarupalli. Bairstow has made three of them in four innings, extending his grim run against India to 0, 6, 0, 0, 18, 0, 0, 28, 0. And with India’s spinners circling wounded prey, there’s every possibility we could have a three-day finish here…

12.18pm: Back to it the drawing boardR Ashwin celebrates a wicket with his team-mates•BCCIEngland might have sent off for some new moves, but they haven’t arrived yet! Fourth ball from Ashwin and Crawley nicks to slip, bringing out Jonny Bairstow… who steers obligingly to leg slip for a golden duck! Ashwin is amongst ’em, though Joe Root sees off the hat-trick ball without drama. England in serious danger of being taken out for a meal with Mr and Mrs Pain, here.

12.15pm: Back to itRight, what have England got in their locker here, then? Cracking innings from Rishabh Pant and, to a lesser degree, Washington Sundar shifted the paradigm of this Test… But have the English batsman got any new, powerful moves to show off? Given they’ve only once passed 200 in their last six innings, India might, in the words of Vince Noir, suggest their moves “are like being caressed with a natural yoghurt”. It’ll take a mighty boosh to set India a target, but that’ll be the aim as Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley head out after lunch. R Ashwin is straight on from the Reliance End to greet them.11.30am: LunchWashington Sundar acknowledges the cheers as he walks off undefeated on 96•Getty Images
Washington Sundar was left agonisingly short of a maiden Test hundred but his unbeaten 96 helped India to carve out a dominant position in the fourth Test. Although they eventually lost their last three wickets without adding to the score, by that stage their first-innings lead over England had swelled to 160.The first 90 minutes of play had been conspicuously lacking in drama, as Sundar and Axar Patel calmly extended their eighth-wicket stand to 106. Both made Test-best scores against a toiling England attack but, with Sundar’s milestone almost in touching distance, the innings suddenly imploded. It took a run-out to break the partnership, as Patel impetuously left his crease for a non-existent single to mid-on. His dive for the crease was in vain, and both players averted their eyes – perhaps sensing what might be to come. Ben Stokes immediately dispatched Ishant Sharma lbw and then three balls later castled Mohammed Siraj, leaving Sundar waiting for his moment despite the applause for a fine innings that helped give India control of the Test.11.20am: Washington fails to cross the Delaware (or something)ESPNcricinfo LtdKarthik Krishnaswamy writes: He was stranded on 85 in the first Test in Chennai, and now he’s stranded on 96. Imagine being Washington Sundar. He has the batting talent to make Test hundreds, clearly, and he’ll surely get one sooner rather than later if he gets a run of games. But here’s the thing: will he? He got his chance because of a freakish injury crisis, and he’s grabbed it brilliantly, but when Ravindra Jadeja and Hanuma Vihari return, where will he fit in India’s XI? He’s currently somewhere between those two: he has the skill and temperament to be a top-six batsman who bowls a bit of offspin, and his bowling has the potential for him to one day become a genuine allrounder. And he’s still only 21. The possibilities are endless, and he’ll get his chance again at some point, but he might have to wait a while. This is the last Test of this season, and after this is a long stretch of Test cricket in English conditions.11.07am: Sundar stranded

Siraj can’t see out the over, never mind accompany Sundar to a richly deserved maiden hundred! Stokes pings his off stump third ball, leaving India’s 21-year-old No. 8 stuck at the other end on 96 not out. A mighty fine knock from Sundar, and it has put India well on top in this Test, despite the last three wickets falling for spit… but oh for four more runs!11.05am: Nine down!Ben Stokes made short work of the tail•BCCITwo in two balls, as Stokes traps Ishant with the plumbest of plumb lbws! Sundar is looking on from the non-striker’s end now, as Siraj heads out at No. 11. Can he hang on to get his mate over the line, as he did for Ashwin in Chennai?11.02am: BreakthroughSundar hangs his head, Patel looks crestfallen, and England have finally found a way to get a wicket this morning! Clipped to mid-on and Patel went haring down only to realise his partner wasn’t moving… it’s tight, but Root did a deft job at collecting the throw and brushing off the bails in one movement. The partnership was ultimately worth 106 – only the third time that both the seventh and the eighth wicket have added 100 in Tests, notes stats guru Gaurav Sundararaman – but Patel’s departure means Sundar, on 96, needs one of Ishant Sharma or Mohammed Siraj to stick around for a bit.10.45am: Sundar into the 90sWashington Sundar plays a pull•BCCIIt’s been a hugely composed innings from Washington Sundar, who is closing in on a maiden Test hundred in only his fourth match. From a wobbly position at 146 for 6, India have piled on more than 200 runs for the loss of one wicket and, given England’s form over the last three Tests, might even be beginning to think they’ll only have to bat once here…10.30am: Daily grindWashington Sundar and Axar Patel added quick runs on the third morning•BCCIThis partnership has gone from minor irritance, certainly in the wake of being merked by Rishabh Pant, to major roadblock for England. India’s eighth-wicket has added more than 80 runs, the lead heading well beyond the manageable, never mind how well the pitch plays. Sundar continues to look the part as a batsman, equaling his Test best of 85 from earlier in the series, while Patel has quintupled his previous highest score of 7. Root finally brought himself on to bowl before the drinks break, but his malfunctioning four-man attack is being made to look even more of a selection error with every passing over.

I’ll presume Jarrod actually means Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, which is about 300 miles from Durham – but yep, Patel has Champo runs under his belt, top-scoring in an innings win during a county stint in 2018 (he even managed to get a bowl take a few wickets). Paul Collingwood is doubtless watching “wor canny lad” with pride from the England dressing room.10.05am: A trip to the LeftoriumESPNcricinfo LtdJust a couple of overs for Bess before he gets hooked, Joe Root seeking more control from his SLA Jack Leach… who is promptly whacked for two fours by Patel, a decent batsman who has a first-class hundred. Root’s problem here is that, while Leach has had a good series and is clearly the superior spinner, he averages 54.72 against left-hand batsmen in Tests, compared to 24.35 against righties. Bess averages 29.25 against southpaws (36.33 against right) – but can barely be trusted to land it right now.So there’s your answer, boss.

9.45am: Sundar risingWashington Sundar hits one down the ground•BCCIEngland have started off with James Anderson and Dom Bess – a move perhaps designed to try and give their offspinner some confidence, with two left-hand bats at the crease in the shape of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. But while Anderson started with back-to-back maidens, Bess conceded three boundaries in his first eight balls. A straight six from Sundar took India’s lead into three figures, before he threaded the gap through cover with an even-better shot. The pitch, meanwhile, looks to be holding together nicely; tidy little footmarks, few obvious signs of disintegration and it’s playing well enough for the Nos. 8 and 9. Whether that’ll be the case when England come to bat remains to be seen.9.35am: Should’ve Seen It Coming Dept

More Pant bantz. Fast bowlers beware…9.15am: Pant-emonium3:20

#AskMatchDay: Is Pant’s reverse lap the most extraordinary shot in Test cricket?

Well, that was a lot of fun, wasn’t it? Unless you’re an England bowler, perhaps. Rishabh Pant turned the game on its head with an extraordinary innings on day two, and he has put India in control of the Test. It’s not over yet, of course, but England have to get their heads back on if it’s not to be the defining contribution. Given their recent batting efforts, a 100-run deficit will loom large… but if we’ve learnt anything from India’s pocket rocket wicketkeeper, it’s that moments are there to be seized. Let’s go.

Lanus based reporter shares latest as Liverpool ready £13m Julio Soler bid

With Liverpool now less than two weeks away from their Premier League curtain raiser against Ipswich Town, the Reds look finally ready to enter the transfer market and bring in some fresh faces.

Liverpool look set to bring in new players

Whilst this summer has so far seen no new players arrive at Anfield, the latest rumours suggest that Liverpool could be making some big moves in the latter stages of the window. The name most prominently touted for a move to Merseyside is that of Anthony Gordon, who appears desperate to join the Reds this summer.

Liverpool could sign best CF since Suarez with move for £59m "powerhouse"

FSG would need to break their record to land this goal machine…

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 3, 2024

The boyhood Liverpool fan was first offered to the Reds as a way to ease the financial concerns of Gordon's current club Newcastle United. Despite the Toon solving their struggles through other means, it appears that Liverpool are now set on bringing the player to Anfield at some point.

The latest development regarding this deal has seen Fabrizio Romano confirm that Liverpool are still interested in signing the England international this summer despite the Magpies insisting on a fee in the region of £75million.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

Another of the Three Lions' stars on the Reds' radar is Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. A report from last month suggested that Arne Slot's side were confident that they could seal a deal for the 24-year-old, although more recent rumours have suggested that Newcastle could be a likely destination for the defender.

With Liverpool's transfer window looking likely to kick off at any moment, it appears that the Reds have made contact over signing a highly-rated young talent.

Reds make contact for Argentina starlet

Mariano Antico, a reporter for major Argentine outlet TyC Sports as well as local Lanus radio in Buenos Aires, has shared an update on Liverpool's interest in Lanus defender Julio Soler.

The Reds view the 19-year-old as a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson and have even gone as far as to make contact with Soler's current side about a potential transfer, which they are "likely" to formalise into an opening bid very soon.

Antico states that Lanus are looking for around £13million for the teenager and it is "very feasible" a deal will be agreed if FSG stump up that number.

On top of his domestic exploits Soler also caught the eye of his national team, making his debut for Argentina's Under 23s side back in June. The 19-year-old was also selected for his country's squad for this summer's Olympic games. Under the management of former Anfield favourite Javier Mascherano, Soler featured four times, grabbing one assist in the process.

With the previously mentioned Robertson still struggling with an injury he sustained during EURO 2024, a new left back may be high on the Reds' list of priorities this summer. Kostas Tsimikas has been a reliable back up in recent seasons, however at 28 years of age, Slot may be in the market for a younger model to support the Scotsman.

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas.

With Liverpool likely to take much of their business right up to the August 30th deadline, a deal for Soler could be one to watch as the window enters its final weeks.

Close to joining: Spurs move for "unstoppable" £29m star who’s like Saka

After a topsy-turvy Premier League campaign that saw them ultimately qualify for the Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur must get their recruitment right this summer to help Ange Postecoglou realise his ambitions in North London.

The Australian had the Lilywhites playing some scintillating football at points last year.

Still, a cavalcade of injuries and loss of form towards the end turned what could have been a frankly unbelievable season into a promising one.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

Fortunately, reports suggest Daniel Levy and Co have been hard at work in recent weeks looking for the right players to come in and help the club take the next step, and the latest name touted for a move to N17 could do precisely that – oh, and he'd been compared to Bukayo Saka.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from SportMediaset via Calcio Napoli 24, Tottenham target Federico Chiesa will join the club this summer.

The report has claimed that while there was plenty of interest in the talented winger in his homeland this summer, he has opted to move to England and is now "close to Tottenham for 30-35 million euros."

This fee converts to between £25m and £29m, which seems like value for money for a player of Chiesa's quality.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

Moreover, while the Spurs' faithful might not be his biggest fans for rivalry reasons, the fact that he has been compared to Saka in the past is certainly not a bad thing.

Why Chiesa would be a great signing and his comparison to Saka

So, before we look at the main reasons why Chiesa would be an excellent signing for Spurs, let's look at his comparison to the talisman of their North London rivals, Saka.

Arsenal right winger Bukayo Saka

While there are obviously some positional similarities between the two internationals, this comparison stems from FBref, which compared players in similar positions at Euro 2024, created a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and concluded that the Englishman was the ninth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Italian at the tournament.

This was not based on the eye test but more so on how closely the pair ranked for several underlying numbers, such as non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive carries, live passes, completed long passes, touches and touches in the attacking third, and ball recoveries, all per 90.

However, this comparison to the England international isn't the only impressive thing about the "unstoppable" wideman, as dubbed by Giorgio Chiellini.

For example, in just 37 appearances last season, the 26-year-old dynamo scored ten goals and provided three assists, which equates to an average of a goal involvement every 2.8 games and would've made him the fourth most productive Spurs player last season.

Ultimately, for the money being reported, this deal for Chiesa seems like a total no-brainer for Levy and Co, and the comparisons to the Arsenal ace reaffirm that fact.

Spurs hit gold on "masterclass signing" who's worth way more than Eze

The Lilywhites already have a left-sided player worth a king’s ransom.

Nathan Lyon's Shield-best six wickets highlights New South Wales fightback

Victoria lost 8 for 48 to waste a strong position at the SCG after Nic Maddinson made 77

Andrew McGlashan18-Feb-2021Nathan Lyon took his best Sheffield Shield figures of 6 for 21 to bring New South Wales back into the contest at the SCG as Victoria suffered a significant middle-order collapse to waste a position of strength.Lyon, who had a difficult Test series against India with nine wickets at 55.11, had broken the opening stand of 94 when Marcus Harris edged a delivery that bounced to slip but Victoria had moved to 2 for 152 before losing their last eight wickets for 48 to finish with a lead of just 35.The slide started when captain Peter Handscomb flicked Trent Copeland to midwicket then Jake Fraser-McGurk was run out by Josh Hazlewood from mid-off after Matt Short had driven firmly to the fielder.Seb Gotch faced 37 balls for 3 before driving to short cover and the careless strokeplay continued when Short flicked Lyon to midwicket.Lyon then went through the lower order as Will Sutherland edged to slip before James Pattinson, Mitch Perry and Jon Holland all fell to failed attempts to clear the field either side of tea.Lyon’s haul was just his second five-wicket bag in the Sheffield Shield after the 5 for 94 he took against Queensland in 2018.Copeland and Sean Abbott shared the other three wickets to fall to the bowlers leaving Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc to share combined figures of 0 for 115 from 30 overs. Hazlewood was steady, but Starc struggled as he conceded five an over.Starc had been greeted by a pulled six from Nic Maddinson to the second ball of the day then the left hander had some fortune when he inside-edged a delivery into the ground which then bounced over Peter Nevill to take him to a 39-ball half-century.His tempo slowed somewhat from that heady rate before he fell slashing at Abbott against the first ball after the first of the rain breaks that punctuated the day’s playing, sending a thick edge flying quickly to second slip where Steven Smith held it well. It was the first of a number of misjudged shots that would prove costly for Victoria.New South Wales were able to eat into the small deficit late in the day but did lose Nick Larkin in the fading light, trapped lbw by Scott Boland before bad light stopped play.

Barcelona hold a commanding lead in LaLiga, and while their attacking prowess is their standout feature, it's evident that their success wouldn't be achievable without the solid defensive structure built by Hansi Flick, even amid key absences. The rise of Pau Cubarsi and the growing importance of Inigo Martinez have been crucial. As Ronald Araujo nears his return, it appears that Andreas Christensen may struggle to regain his spot in the squad once he's fully fit.

Andrew McGlashan04-Apr-2021Australia insist they hadn’t spoken about a potential new ODI winning streak of 22 matches and had largely downplayed the topic when asked in the lead-up, but having secured the victory over New Zealand in the first ODI in Mount Maunganui, Alyssa Healy admitted it was a “special feeling” to have overtaken Ricky Ponting’s team.In the end, it came at a canter as unbeaten half-centuries Ash Gardner and Ellyse Perry secured the run chase with more than 11 overs to spare.”I guess now the dust has settled. It’s a pretty special feeling and one I definitely think the girls won’t take lightly – it’s a pretty impressive record to break,” Healy, who struck 65 off 68 balls, said. “It’s a special record. A lot of players in that room – me in particular – have idolised Ricky Ponting growing up; he’s exactly how I wanted to bat and take on the game.Related

“So for us to break a record that had him all over it is pretty special for this group. No doubt when we get back in the dressing room and flick our phones on there might be a bit of hoo-ha about it. We genuinely hadn’t spoken about it but think everyone has some smiles on their faces which is pretty cool.”Australia have been pushed at times during their run, which started back in March 2018, but plenty of the victories have been handsome margins. One of the aspects that most stood out for Healy was the span of the victories – it has taken more than 1100 days to go from the first win of this run to today’s moment. By contrast, Ponting’s team achieved their streak in the space of five months in early 2003.”There’s been a lot of years between those games. We don’t play at lot of cricket for Australia, especially over the last 18 months,” she said. “That’s been the most impressive thing that we can come back as a group and still be as consistent as what we have been.”Twenty-one players have been used in that time and Healy is one of four – alongside Beth Mooney, Rachael Haynes and Gardner – to have appeared in them all. “It just makes my hamstrings feel a little bit tighter than they did before the game,” she joked. “It is pretty special individually, I guess, to have the longevity that I’ve had throughout my career is pretty surreal actually. At the same time, it’s been really fun being part of a team that’s had so many different people come in and play a role.”Australia are in no mood to stop, either. The Rose Bowl – the trophy for which these teams contest their ODI series – has been held by Australia for more than 20 years, and remains up for grabs with two matches left in this series. “[New Zealand] are only 1-0 down in the series, they can still win the next game and take it to a third,” Healy said. “We’re wary of that.”In regards the schedule that Healy alluded to, their next cricket after this tour remains uncertain, although it is likely to be a series against India alongside next season’s Ashes before the World Cup back in New Zealand next March where they are desperate to atone for their semi-final loss against India in 2017.

Liverpool offered "one-man army" who can finally replace Wijnaldum

The new season is just over a week away, but the wait goes on for those of a Liverpool persuasion, with no new signings having arrived to bolster Arne Slot's squad.

That delay may have alarm bells ringing among supporters, yet taking a measured approach to the market should be celebrated rather than condemned, with the Dutchman also afforded adequate time to assess those already at his disposal.

A key issue to resolve for the ex-Feyenoord boss will be the make-up of his midfield unit, with the aim to try and replicate the golden trio of Jurgen Klopp's time in charge, in the form of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum.

Filling the Brazilian's void in the number six berth may be the priority this summer – as David Ornstein has alluded to – yet the Reds may also have the chance to finally fill the shoes of Slot's compatriot, Wijnaldum, in that box-to-box role at Anfield.

Liverpool's search for a midfielder

According to journalist Dean Jones – speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras podcast – the Merseysiders have reportedly been "offered" the chance to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder, Manu Kone, with "four or five" Premier League clubs also in the mix.

That follows a prior report from transfer insider Graeme Bailey, who revealed that the 23-year-old could be up for grabs for as little as £20m, with just two years left on his existing deal in Germany.

The promising Frenchman – who is currently part of Thierry Henry's Olympic squad – was previously touted as a target for Klopp and co last summer, albeit with the club eventually bringing in the quartet of Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Why Manu Kone would be a good signing

As noted above, the Anfield giants did overhaul the midfield ranks a year ago, yet there is still that nagging feeling that another addition is needed, particularly to help fill the void in front of the back four.

Kone can operate in that pivot, number six role, although his strengths perhaps lie in more of a box-to-box role, having been described as a "one-man army" in the centre of the park by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

As U23 scout Antonio Mango has also noted, the former Toulouse man is an "energetic, hard working counter pressing midfielder" who "likes to get in the faces of the opposition", showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 18% among his peers in Europe's top five leagues for tackles made per 90.

It is that relentless nature which could ensure he is the perfect heir to Wijnaldum, rather than Fabinho, with the one-time Newcastle United man having regularly been lauded for his "immense" work rate – as per pundit Paul Merson – during his five-year stay on Merseyside.

Part of the side that claimed Premier League and Champions League glory under Klopp, among other honours, the 33-year-old was arguably the "perfect midfielder" – as per Klopp – having offered that all-action presence in the side.

Much like Wijnaldum – who registered 38 goals and assists in 237 games for the club – Kone also has the ability to impact proceedings in the final third, scoring twice and registering two assists in all competitions last term.

More impressively, however, is the fact that the Gladbach ace also ranks in the top 15% among his peers for progressive carries and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90, further evidence of the link he can provide between defence and attack.

As such, Slot could well make a dream first signing by bringing the Frenchman into the fold, with his Wijnaldum-esque talents making him a perfect fit for life at Anfield.

Barcelona dominated the latest edition of the El Clasico rivalry, with the Real Madrid faithful having to watch their side get obliterated at the Bernabeu. Some fans crossed the line, however, as they allegedly hurled racist remarks towards Raphinha and 17-year-old Yamal, who were both in sparkling form.

Prior to kick-off, the two sides were separated by three points in the top two positions in the table, as Barcelona's brilliant young team had made an electric start to the season. The stakes were high, and many expected a tense, close game reminiscent of the peak of the El Clasico rivalry at the start of the 2010's. However, Real Madrid unraveled in the second half, conceding four goals in a half-hour period.

Fans made their displeasure known with whistles and boos, while some took the heckling too far, with Spanish police confirming that three arrests were made.

SPANISH POLICE STATEMENT

In an X post made by the Spanish National Police, they stated: "Three arrested for uttering racist remarks against two football players during El Clasico played last October.

"Those arrested made xenophobic statements that violated the dignity and moral integrity of both."

WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA AND REAL MADRID?

While the investigation into fan behaviour at the game is likely to continue, both sides have on-field matters to attend to. Barcelona face Celta Vigo on Saturday in a bid to maintain the minimum six-point gap to their rivals, while Real Madrid travel to Leganes, where they must win in order to stay in close proximity to Barca at the summit of the league.
