Not just Sterling: £50m star will likely now never play for Chelsea again

Would Chelsea improve this season? That was the million dollar heading into the new campaign.

A clash against Manchester City is hardly an ideal litmus test on the opening weekend but it's fair to say that the Blues certainly do not help themselves.

Robert Sanchez was preferred in goal, a decision that backfired after he made a lacklustre attempt to keep former Chelsea man Mateo Kovacic out. Of course it was him, one of the players sold to fund the lavish spending throughout Todd Boehly's tenure in London.

Perhaps they should have kept the Croat? We jest, of course, but you do have to question the transfer strategy.

Despite the hefty recruitment drive this summer they still lack a centre-forward who fills you with too much confidence.

Nicolas Jackson was hauled off having had fewer touches than the aforementioned Sanchez and you can hardly place your faith in 18-year-old Marc Guiu just yet.

Victor Osimhen, anyone? That would be the dream but it would require another hefty fee. The strange thing is that Chelsea do have some good players, some great players in fact. One of them, or rather, plenty of them weren't in the squad.

We want to focus on Raheem Sterling and one of his fellow countrymen.

Why Sterling was left out of the squad

When the Chelsea squad was announced for the visit of Pep Guardiola's men on Sunday there was one glaring admission.

There was no room for Sterling in the entire matchday squad, let alone in the starting lineup. Considering the sheer volume of players at Enzo Maresca's disposal, someone was always going to miss out but it was a shock to see Sterling – one of the Premier League's highest earners – exiled from proceedings.

2. Casemiro

3. Mohammed Salah

£350k

4. Raheem Sterling

£325k

5. Kai Havertz

£280k

6. Heung-min Son

£190k

So, why was he left out? Well, Maresca had his say after the game, commenting: "It’s just a technical decision, nothing else to say. Managers are paid to make decisions and sometimes players don’t like it."

The former Man City star was told of the decision on Friday and one now has to wonder what the future holds for him in west London, particularly with the club's hierarchy reportedly backing the decision to leave him out.

Raheem Sterling

Maresca further stated that he "wants" Sterling but some of the squad "have to leave."

Interesting indeed, as was the statement that the winger's camp released just an hour before kick-off. Yeah, it wasn't ideal preparation for a Premier League opener, was it?

It's safe to say there's never a dull moment at the Bridge with Boehly at the wheel, but Sterling isn't the only one who may well never play for the club again.

Who could follow Sterling through the exit door?

Well, as we know, Chelsea are looking to force through exits for Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah. Striker Armando Broja continues to be linked with a move away too.

Yet, we want to focus on another of Chelsea's high-earners here, Ben Chilwell.

The left-back missed out on the England squad for Euro 2024 and after playing just 64 minutes under Maresca throughout pre-season was among the crop of players exiled from the squad on Sunday afternoon.

Marc Cucurella – one of the stars of that aforementioned European Championships – started at left-back and when he had to come off it was new signing Renato Veiga who came on.

All of the above would likely suggest that Chilwell, the holder of 106 Chelsea appearances, has played his last game for the club.

The £50m signing has battled with fitness right throughout his stint in the capital and it looks as though the end is nigh.

Bizarrely, Manchester United are reportedly interested in his services despite possessing another injury-prone full-back in Luke Shaw. Even if the Red Devils don't bring him in, it's likely he'll find a suitor elsewhere.

Sadly for the sake of PSR, it's unlikely they'll get anything close to the mammoth fee they shelled out when signing him from Leicester City.

There are just under two weeks of the window remaining and despite a busy and dramatic window, it still looks like there are some key details to iron out and finalise. Oh to be on that recruitment team at Chelsea.

Romano says Tottenham are working on last-gasp transfer after Solomon exit

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are "working" on a last-minute potential arrival at N17 before the transfer window cut-off, backing other reports that Spurs are not finished in the market just yet.

Manor Solomon exit to Leeds confirmed in latest Spurs transfer

Earlier this week, Spurs completed their latest piece of summer business, with winger Manor Solomon joining Leeds United on a straight season-long loan with no option to buy.

The Israel international fell down Ange Postecoglou's pecking order following the arrival of Wilson Odobert from Burnley earlier this window, and spent most of his debut campaign in north London on the treatment table.

Solomon suffered a meniscus tear last season, which kept him out from October all the way through to July, preventing the 25-year-old from fighting his way back into Postecoglou's plans and ultimately thwarting his Spurs career.

The former Fulham star has now been granted a fresh opportunity with Leeds as he aims to get back on track and impress in the Championship.

“I am really happy to be here," said Solomon on joining Leeds. “I've heard a lot about the club, about its fans, about the heritage, the history. I know it's a massive club in England and I'm looking forward to seeing the fans and to meet them all.

"As soon as the interest from Leeds came, I started to look for the players, for the coach and I've spoken with the manager and he explained to me about the style of playing, about the players that there are in Leeds.

alejo-veliz-manor-solomon-tottenham-opinion

“I know there is a group of great lads, young people with great desire, with great techniques, and I'm looking forward to playing with them and to help them in the best way I can. I just want to get going.”

Following Solomon's temporary switch to Elland Road, attention turns to what other transfers Spurs may conduct before the clock runs out on what has been a memorable and topsy-turvy window.

There have been reports that Tottenham could move to sign a new midfielder after Oliver Skipp's £20m-plus move to Leicester City, while it is also believed that Postecoglou and his staff are pushing Spurs to bring in another defender.

Tottenham "working" on last-gasp signing for Postecoglou

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Romano has somewhat reinforced these claims with his own update. The journalist told GMS that Tottenham are indeed "working" on a last-gasp potential signing for Postecoglou, but is vague in the specifics based off what he's been informed by his sources.

“The deal they did with Burnley [for Odobert] was completely silent," said Romano.

"So, I think they're still working on something, and I'm told they're still working on something, but there is still nothing concrete or close to being completed. But I can confirm Tottenham are still in the market for opportunities.”

Jamie Gittens: Borussia Dortmund's English wonderkid following in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham & Jadon Sancho with his own breakout season after ditching Man City

BVB could make millions from another top talent after making a habit of giving some of England's most talented youngsters an opportunity to shine

On November 30 at the Westfalenstadion, Jamie Gittens did something that no player had managed for eight weeks: he scored against Bayern Munich. However, the fact the Borussia Dortmund winger had breached the Bavarians' backline wasn't nearly as exciting or significant as the way that he had done so.

Gittens managed to torch Konrad Laimer without even touching the ball, with the 20-year-old ingeniously allowing Nico Schlotterbeck's seemingly innocuous pass from deep inside his own half to run past him before turning on the afterburners and racing past the bamboozled Bayern right-back.

Laimer puffed out his cheeks and set off in pursuit but his race was already run. There was no catching Gittens. And, despite the presence of Manuel Neuer in goal, no stopping the left-footed strike that almost burst the Bayern net either.

Gittens admitted afterwards that even just a couple of years ago, he would have been intimidated by going up against a goalkeeping legend that he used to see on FIFA and TV – but not anymore. Gittens is a very different character – and proposition – this season.

Right now, in fact, he's one of the most in-form forwards in the world – which is precisely why the latest English prospect developed in Dortmund is drawing comparisons to Lamine Yamal going into Wednesday's mouth-watering Champions League match-up with Barcelona…

Getty Where it all began

Gittens was born and raised in Reading and started playing football with his classmates shortly after starting primary school before joining local team Caversham Trents U6 or U7s. "I used to just kick a ball around, chase it and do it every single day," he told the Bundesliga's official website. "I really enjoyed these times – so much fun…

"From there, I had a trial at Chelsea and Reading as well, but I picked Reading because it is closer to my home. I was in Reading from Under-9s until Under-14s. But then I went to Manchester City for two years."

Just like Jadon Sancho, though, Gittens decided to leave the Etihad outfit for Dortmund before he'd even made a single appearance at senior level for the club. He wasn't considered quite as advanced as Sancho at the time – he was still only 16 when he moved to Germany – but BVB were cautiously optimistic that Gittens would prove just as shrewd a signing.

"Our scouting department has done a fantastic job!" Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc enthused in September 2020. "He is a highly talented wide player, who will get the chance to develop at his own pace in our youth teams.

"We don't want expectations to be raised too high right from the start. He is still a year younger than Jadon was then… but the hope is that at some point he will be promoted to the professional team."

Gittens would have to bide his time, though.

AdvertisementGettyThe big break

Gittens' early days in Dortmund were tough. There were the usual struggles with homesickness and the difficulty always involved in trying to adapt to a new country and new language – but the teenager's integration was greatly complicated by the fact that he arrived during lockdown, meaning he spent an awful lot of time "stuck in the youth house on academy campus".

Gittens was also sidelined by an ankle injury and recurring issues in both shoulders that significantly stunted his rate of progress.

However, Dortmund were in no doubt that Gittens would prove worth the wait and he eventually made his debut in April 2022 before netting his first Bundesliga goal in August of the same year.

It was only after shaking off the effects of his shoulder problems that Gittens really began to show what he could do and, on the evening of November 28, 2023, he starred at San Siro, scoring one goal and creating another in a 3-1 victory over AC Milan that secured Dortmund qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League.

"That was the perfect game for me," Gittens enthused in a post-match interview with UEFA's official website.

How it's going

Just over a year ago, Jude Bellingham hailed his former Dortmund team-mate Gittens as a potential Golden Boy winner – we're now seeing exactly why.

Gittens has taken his game to a whole other level this season. A player who had previously scored five times in 58 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions has nine goals in 20 outings so far this season, including four in his last four games.

"It's not news to me that he's incredible one-on-one and is a very good finisher," coach Nuri Sahin said recently. "But now he’s scoring goals and playing more mature football. He's a very important player for us.

"[But] Jamie himself wants to take the next step, and we want him to take that step."

Biggest strengths

Gittens will be the first to admit that in the past he was too preoccupied with showing off his sensational skillset, more concerned with embarrassing opponents than helping his team-mates. However, he's becoming as efficient as he is entertaining.

Obviously, his pace has always made him a problem for full-backs but he's now become almost unstoppable when he starts with the stepovers.

Teams have taken to doubling up on him and yet, as he's illustrated in several Bundesliga and Champions League games already this season, it doesn't appear to make a difference.

The outcome is, as Dortmund's social media team have revelled in pointing out, as inevitable as Thanos.

Indeed, West Ham held talks with ex-Sheffield United defender John Egan after his Bramall Lane exit, but the Irishman has now joined Burnley on a free transfer instead – despite playing in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Dagenham and Redbridge recently (ExWHUemployee).

Lopetegui was also offered a chance to sign Yusuf Yazici for West Ham, according to some reports, with the Turkey international still on the hunt for a new club after leaving Lille.

The departures of Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma on loan have left Lopetegui quite short in central defence, though, with Jean-Clair Todibo, Konstaninos Mavropanos and Max Kilman standing out as his only senior central defensive options.

West Ham could hold new talks with Joel Matip

Alongside Egan, West Ham also held talks with ex-Liverpool defender Joel Matip.

The Champions League-winning ace, valued at around £7 million by Transfermarkt, is still available after seeing a late summer move to Bayer Leverkusen collapse. That is according to RUHR 24, who also suggest that West Ham could go back in for Matip with further negotiations.

The Cameroonian made over 200 appearances for Liverpool, attracting real praise for some of his performances, even if his final year at Anfield was blighted by injury.

Called "fantastic" by Jamie Carragher, his fitness record would be a concern for Lopetegui and West Ham, but Matip would also bring plenty of pedigree and experience.

After 'big emphasis' on improvement, South Africa get their slip-catching mojo back

South Africa created 14 catching chances in the first Test against West Indies and took 13 of them

Firdose Moonda15-Jun-2021Dean Elgar had asked for centuries and five-fors in his first series in charge of South Africa’s Test team and, so far, Quinton de Kock, Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada have delivered. Though he didn’t say it, Elgar probably also wanted everyone to hold on to catches after South Africa spilt eight chances in their last two Test series. Cue a near-perfect performance against West Indies in the first Test, with only one chance put down, and even the things Elgar didn’t know he had wished for had come true.Related

'It's like scoring a hundred' after a lean patch – Rabada

Stats: South Africa's first away win since 2017

South Africa created 14 catching chances in the first Test and took 13. Their only miss was Kyle Verreynne putting down Roston Chase on 6, while stationed at short leg. Ngidi was the bowler denied, after taking 5 for 19 in the first innings, and Chase went on to make 62, the highest West Indies score of the match. It was a miss all right, but in the context of the game, it didn’t change much. South Africa still won by an innings and 63 runs.Notably, ten of the 13 successful grabs were behind the stumps: seven in the slips, two by the wicketkeeper, and one at gully. That’s the region in which South Africa dropped seven catches collectively against Sri Lanka last year and Pakistan earlier this year – five in the slips and two by the wicketkeeper.”We came under criticism over the last few series we played so there was a big emphasis on trying to get it (our fielding standards) back,” Justin Ontong, the fielding coach, said. “And there was quite a bit of assistance for the seamers and we knew that slip-catching was going to be a critical part of winning the game.”He put South Africa’s previous lapses down to changing personnel in the cordon after the retirements of high-profile regulars. “We’ve lost the likes of Faf (du Plessis) and Hashim (Amla), and they played a huge part,” Ontong explained.

“You want to try and get your best slip fielders in positions two and three. That was a key area for us. Aiden and Wiaan were exceptional in this Test. It was a matter of getting them in the right places”Justin Ontong

Against Sri Lanka, du Plessis was still part of the Test outfit and was in the slips, but against Pakistan, South Africa used Elgar, who dropped two chances, Rassie van der Dussen, who has since been moved to the covers where he had a flawless match against West Indies, Temba Bavuma, who put down a catch against Sri Lanka and two against Pakistan including at leg slip, and, occasionally, Aiden Markram. Against West Indies, they settled on Elgar, Markram and Wiaan Mulder, who took four catches all told, including the toughest one.Mulder reacted quickly to pouch the chance off Kyle Mayers’ edge, off Anrich Nortje, which had to be taken low down at third slip, which he has likely cemented as his spot. “You want to try and get your best slip fielders in positions two and three. That was a key area for us,” Ontong said. “Aiden and Wiaan were exceptional in this Test. It was a matter of getting them in the right places.”Ontong said the coaching staff identified Markram and Mulder as members of the cordon because, “normally good batsmen are good slip fielders, they have good eyes and good reflexes”. They then did specialised work to prepare them for the task: “It’s good to have Mark Boucher (as a coach) who has played a lot of Tests and stood behind the stumps. There’s some great input from him. We do a lot of one-handed stuff, reflex work to sharpen the guys up and so far the guys have responded well.”So well, that Ontong couldn’t identify any areas that need improving ahead of the second Test on Friday and said South Africa would work to maintain the bar they have set. “It’s difficult to follow a Test match like the first one. We were brilliant in all three departments,” he said. “There’s going to be harder work behind the scenes to make sure we don’t drop standards.”

Hot on the heels of Ronaldo reiterating that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1 and that outside of serial winners Paris Saint-Germain, the rest of the teams are "finished", World Cup-winning former France international Adil Rami has hit back at the Al-Nassr man. The ex-Lille and Marseille defender said the Portuguese did not "realise" how good the French top flight is and hit out at the Saudi league in derisory fashion.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As the poster child of the Saudi Pro League, it is understandable that Ronaldo is trying to talk up the division he is playing in. While lots of great players have headed to the Middle East for the riches it provides, few would argue Ligue 1 is weaker than the Saudi division.
