IPL unveils new format for 2022, with two groups and seedings

Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings will be on top in Group B

Nagraj Gollapudi25-Feb-2022The 2022 IPL will give its 10 teams seedings and place them in two “virtual” groups during the league phase of the tournament. The seedings are based on the number of times a team has won the IPL or made the finals. Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who are the top overall seeds, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings, will lead Group B with the No. 2 seeding. The other teams in Group A, in order, are Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Group B features Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, in that order.ESPNcricinfo LtdUnveiling the new format on Friday, the IPL said in a release that the 10 teams will play a total of 14 matches – seven home and seven away – during the league phase of a season that now stretches to 70 games. Ten of the 14 matches will be home-and-away games against the other four teams in the group, as well as two matches against the team from the corresponding row (organised by the seedings) of the other group. Mumbai, as an example, will play the other four teams in Group A – Knight Riders, Royals, Capitals and Super Giants – and Super Kings from Group B two times each. They will play the remaining teams in the other group once each (for a total of 14 games) – these games will be split home and away. The home-and-away formula will not be relevant this season, though, because the IPL has decided to restrict the league phase to four venues across two cities: Mumbai and Pune. While Mumbai will host the bulk of the matches (55), the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium on the outskirts of Pune will host 15 matches during the league phase.ESPNcricinfo LtdEvery team will play four times each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy, and three times each at Brabourne Stadium and the MCA Stadium. While the IPL will finalise and announce the schedule in early March, it remains to be seen whether Mumbai will get any matches at their home base at the Wankhede.2011 format tweaked
The format is similar to the one used in 2011, when 10 teams featured for the first time. The teams were split into two loose groups, with 70 league matches and four playoff games, and all the teams ranked in one points table. During the league phase, every team played 14 matches. Each team played the other four in their group both home and away (eight matches), four of the teams in the other group once each (four matches, either home or away), and the remaining team in the other group twice, both home and away. A random draw decided the composition of the groups as well as who played whom across the groups once or twice. For 2022, the IPL confirmed that the tournament will be played between March 26 and May 29. It will begin 10 days after India’s home Test series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to end. That means the IPL will not follow the RM Lodha Committee recommendation, which had stated that a two-week gap was mandatory between any international series/tournament India played and the IPL.

Rahul Tewatia hits 6, 6 off last two balls in spectacular finish for Gujarat Titans

Gill put the chase on track with 96 before Kings pulled it back and took the game deep

Hemant Brar08-Apr-20222:41

Shastri: ‘Gill one of the best young players in the world’

Shubman Gill played yet another sublime innings, scoring a career-best 96 off 59 balls, but it was Rahul Tewatia’s two sixes off the final two balls that took Gujarat Titans over the line against Punjab Kings at the Brabourne Stadium.Chasing 190, Titans needed 62 from the last six overs with nine wickets in hand. But that one big over that would have titled the game in Titans’ favour didn’t come until the very end. With 19 required from the final over, Odean Smith started with a wide to David Miller but on the next ball, Hardik Pandya got run out while trying to sneak in a bye. Rahul Tewatia took a single first ball to hand back the strike to Miller, who then pulled Smith over midwicket for four. Then with 12 needed, Tewatia smashed the last two balls over deep midwicket to steal the victory. The boundary-rider got his hands on the first one but couldn’t parry it inside. The next was a six the moment it hit the bat, leading to frenzied celebrations from Tewatia. How Gujarat Titans won a high-scoring thriller•ESPNcricinfo LtdThe Shubman Gill show
In Titans’ last game, against Delhi Capitals, Gill had scored a sublime 84 off 46 balls. On Friday, it looked like he was just continuing from there. He hit the first two balls he faced, from Vaibhav Arora, for fours. Then he got stuck into Arshdeep Singh. Punching him past mid-on, pulling him through midwicket and cutting him in front of cover, he collected three boundaries in his first over.Mayank Agarwal turned to Kagiso Rabada in the fourth over and Rabada didn’t disappoint. With his second ball, he got Matthew Wade to nick one to the wicketkeeper.B Sai Sudharsan, though, proved to be an able ally for Gill. The duo took Titans past 50 in the sixth over, and hit a six each in the next two. Gill brought up his fifty off 29 balls, steering Titans to 94 for 1 at the halfway stage. In the next three overs, he hit three more fours and reached 80 off 45 balls.Related

Gill and Sai Sudharsan added 101 in 68 balls for the second wicket before Sudharsan skied a Rahul Chahar googly to extra-cover.The required rate was still not out of hand, but Arshdeep conceded only six from the 16th over and five from the 18th to make things difficult for Titans.Pandya hit two successive fours off Rabada in the 19th over but the bowler had Gill mistiming a wide full toss to extra-cover. Off his last 16 balls, Gill managed only 18. However, Tewatia magic saved the day for Titans.Kings’ sedate start
Earlier, after being put in, Agarwal got Kings off the mark with a four off Mohammed Shami before Pandya, once again sharing the new ball, got him with a short ball.Jonny Bairstow, who replaced Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the side, started with a first-ball four but he too didn’t last long. Liam Livingstone knows only one way to bat, or so it seems. He too opened his account with a four, and shortly afterwards jumped out of his crease to deposit Darshan Nalkande over long-on.But then came a slice of luck. In the ninth over of the innings, Livingstone pulled Rashid Khan towards deep midwicket, where Pandya leapt in the air and took the catch. But as he was landing, his foot brushed the boundary cushion. Livingstone had started walking back and was almost near the boundary line when he saw the replay on the big screen. In the next over, he moved across his stumps and helped Nalkande for a six and four off successive balls. He wrapped up the over with yet another four, taking Kings to 86 for 2 after ten overs.200? 170? No, 189
All this while Shikhar Dhawan had played an innings of two halves. He raced away to 19 off 11 balls but could score only 16 off the next 19. In the end, Rashid had him caught behind with a googly. It was the fourth time he dismissed Dhawan in T20s while conceding only 41 runs off 44 balls.Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma took the attack to Tewatia and clubbed him for 24 in his first and the only over of the innings. Livingstone cruised to his fifty off just 21 balls, and having reached 124 for 3 in 13 overs, Kings looked all set for a 200-run total.Nalkande, though, jolted them with two wickets in two balls – both Jitesh and Odean Smith holed out to long-on. M Shahrukh Khan hit Shami for back-to-back sixes before Rashid dismissed Livingstone and Shahrukh to leave them 154 for 7.That soon became 162 for 9. Rahul Chahar and Arshdeep Singh then added 27 in 2.1 overs to lift Kings to 189 for 9. At that stage, it felt like Kings had made up lost ground but that didn’t turn out to be the case.

"Clever" £75k-p/w Leicester mainstay set to miss multiple games with injury

Looking to extend their impressive run under Ruud van Nistelrooy to three games without defeat, Leicester City will have to do so without one of their most important players against Newcastle United and beyond.

Leicester injury news

When the Foxes parted ways with Steve Cooper even after they found themselves sitting outside the Premier League relegation zone courtesy of a solid start, it came as quite the shock. The former Nottingham Forest boss had been in charge for just a matter of months and, on the results front, was yet to really put a significant foot wrong. Yet still, he was shown the door.

Offer made: Leicester City submit big bid for Ruud's first January signing

Ruud van Nistelrooy is reportedly already making moves in the transfer market.

ByBarney Lane Dec 13, 2024

As it turns out, however, Leicester simply couldn’t resist the chance to appoint Van Nistelrooy, who had just left a positive – albeit short – interim spell in charge of Manchester United and looking for his next permanent role. The Foxes took the ultimate risk by swapping the experienced for a manager with fresh ideas and have so far, to their credit, reaped the rewards with victory over West Ham followed by a dramatic comeback against Brighton & Hove Albion.

If the impressive new manager wants his side’s recent run to continue, however, then he will have to find a way to replace one of his mainstays. As confirmed by Van Nistelrooy, Leicester are set to be without Wilfred Ndidi against Newcastle this weekend and the midfielder could yet miss multiple games with a hamstring problem.

The Leicester boss told reporters as relayed by The Shields Gazette: “Correct, he has a hamstring injury so he’s not available. We’ll see how he reacts, but it seems like it will at least be a couple of weeks.”

In a frustrating blow, the Foxes will now be without their £75,000-a-week star for this weekend at the very least.

Games that "clever" Ndidi could miss

As well as Newcastle this weekend, Ndidi could also be sidelined for Leicester’s crucial relegation six-pointer against fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend, before potentially making his return on Boxing Day for the Foxes’ tough trip to Premier League leaders Liverpool should Van Nistelrooy’s two-week verdict prove to be correct.

Ndidi’s injury comes just after he found himself at the centre of praise from former Leicester boss Mike Stowell, who told BBC Radio Leicester, as relayed by Afrik-Foot NG: “I have always known (Wilfred Ndidi) as a number six because of his defensive attributes. But he is also dogged and will go all day long and put his body on the line.

“He is very clever with his challenges and those long legs of his just give him range. “His discipline and timing of things with Jamie Vardy was brilliant. Vardy was orchestrating and pointing [to where he wanted to receive the ball].

“Wilf was just doing Vards’ running for him because Vards is clever enough to tell him when to go and run to press a ball. He won the ball back so many times against Palace, which really put us on the front foot and in behind. So, without a shadow of a doubt, he was man of the match.”

NXGN 2025: Top 20 English teenage wonderkids in football

The Three Lions aren't short of talented young players but the conveyor belt is showing no signs of slowing down as a new generation emerges

Being an England football fan has rarely felt so good. While the Three Lions' search for a first tournament win since 1966 goes on, the way in which Sir Gareth Southgate was able to lead a young group of players to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final highlighted the level of talent that is now being produced by one of world football's perennial underachievers.

From Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden to Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka, England now have a core group of players who still have their best years ahead of them, and with Thomas Tuchel about to take charge of his first games since replacing Southgate, hopes are high that 50 years of hurt will be ended at the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The cupboard isn't about to run dry, either. GOAL's annual countdown of the top teenage footballers in the world, NXGN, featured nine English players in 2025 – more than any other country – and there were plenty of others under consideration too.

Here, then, are the 20 best English players born on or after January 1, 2006 to keep an eye out for in future England squads…

Getty Images SportJosh Acheampong (Chelsea)

Back in late 2024, there was a very real fear around Chelsea that they were about to lose Josh Acheampong. The talented right-back was refusing to sign a new contract and with the likes of Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich circling, it felt like the departure of yet another homegrown starlet was inevitable for the big-spending Blues.

However, it was announced in December that the 18-year-old had agreed a new long-term deal to remain at Stamford Bridge, and he has since begun forcing his way into Enzo Maresca's first-team plans while showcasing impressive versatility by slotting in at centre-back with relative ease.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportHarrison Armstrong (Everton)

Good news has been in short supply for Everton fans in recent years, but as the Toffees prepare to move into their new stadium at Bramley Moore with their Premier League status secured, the signs are that they will have a homegrown midfielder to build a team around over the next decade in the shape of Harrison Armstrong.

The 17-year-old made his first-team debut for the Merseysiders at the start of the 2024-25 campaign before earning a handful of Premier League appearances under Sean Dyche. In a bid to gain further experience, Armstrong was then loaned out to Derby County in January and he is earning rave reviews after some excellent performances for the Rams as they bid to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Getty Images SportTyler Dibling (Southampton)

Southampton almost certainly won't be sticking around in the Premier League as they edge ever closer to relegation, but at least one of the Saints' players will be remaining in the top flight, with Tyler Dibling set to be the subject of a bidding war this summer having established himself as one of the best prospects in English football.

The 19-year-old, who briefly spent time at Chelsea in the summer of 2022 before returning to St. Mary's, has oozed confidence since becoming a regular on the south coast, while Dibling's versatility in attacking areas has also likely played a part in the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle considering moves for him, though they could yet face competition from Bayern Munich if reports are to be believed.

Getty Images SportMax Dowman (Arsenal)

Arsenal became the first team to give a Premier League debut to a 15-year-old when Ethan Nwaneri made his Gunners bow at Brentford back in 2022 and, if Mikel Arteta had his way, he likely would have followed suit in handing Max Dowman his first taste of top-flight football before he turns 16 in December.

As it is, the attacking midfielder is being made to wait due to Premier League rules, but Dowman has already trained with Arteta's senior squad on a number of occasions having shown he can mix it with players who are years ahead of him after becoming the youngest player to ever score in the prestigious UEFA Youth League earlier this season.

Chelsea eyeing 2025 move to sign "unique" Arsenal gem who could now leave

Turning their attention towards 2025 and dealing their London rivals a frustrating blow, Chelsea have now reportedly set their sights on signing an Arsenal prospect who could now leave the North London club.

Chelsea transfer news

After throwing transfers at the wall and seeing what sticks in the last couple of years, Todd Boehly seems to have finally got things right with Enzo Maresca and the several fresh who have arrived in the last year. The Blues’ rise back into the Champions League places has arrived quicker than many believed was possible given where they found themselves last season, but Maresca has provided the calm among the storm to guide those at Stamford Bridge back towards success.

That doesn’t mean the spending will end there, however. In fact, rumours over further reinforcements are already underway. Names such as Sverre Nypan and, to little surprise, Benjamin Sesko have already been mentioned ahead of 2025, with the Blues seemingly interested in the latter to sharpen their attacking options despite Nicolas Jackson’s strong form.

£52m star "ready to leave" Chelsea in January as agents look for new club

His camp are scouring for a potential winter landing spot.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 21, 2024

When 2025 does arrive, meanwhile, it looks as though the London club are going to stick to the script by focusing on future stars. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Boehly and Chelsea are now eyeing a move to sign Ayden Heaven from Arsenal, who recently rejected a contract offer from the Gunners and could now be heading for an Emirates exit in 2025.

Chelsea aren’t the only club interested, either. The likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool are also reportedly plotting moves to sign the 18-year-old centre-back in what would deal their rivals a frustrating blow.

Heaven certainly wouldn’t be the first player to cross the divide and join Chelsea from Arsenal, but that won’t stand in the way of the headlines if he does complete such a move.

"Unique" Heaven is one for the future

Like many Chelsea arrivals across the last two years, Heaven would be one for the future rather than someone ready to make an instant impact. Boehly’s plan seemingly centres around patience and hope that he has signed the next batch of Europe’s next stars before they’ve even had their moments in the spotlight. That includes the likes of Aaron Anselmino and recent hat-trick hero Marc Guiu, who could yet be joined by Heaven.

Ayden Heaven for Arsenal.

The young Arsenal defender has already earned some impressive praise from the likes of Ben Mattinson. The analyst took a closer look at the rising star, before coming to the conclusion that he has a “unique” profile during the summer.

After losing Chido Obi-Martin to Manchester United a few months ago, Arsenal could now be dealt another academy blow if Chelsea come swooping in to land Heaven’s signature.

Miller and Hardik muscle Titans into the IPL final

Jos Buttler’s 89 off 56 in vain but Royals will have a second shot at the title in Qualifier 2

Shashank Kishore24-May-20222:41

Manjrekar: ‘Chahal bowled the tough overs, but Ashwin was slightly disappointing’

A man who wasn’t snapped up until the fag end of an exhaustive two-day auction was front and centre of Gujarat Titans’ dream run into the IPL final, which will be played at their home ground in front of possibly 100,000 fans in Ahmedabad.David Miller, enjoying his best IPL returns since 2013, channeled the spirit of Carlos Brathwaite by going 6, 6, 6 in a sensational final-over take down of Prasidh Krishna as Titans made no fuss in polishing off the 16 runs they needed off the final over. Miller remained unbeaten on 68 off 38, and his partnership of 106 with Hardik Pandya, who made a subdued unbeaten 40, ensured Titans were always ahead of a chase of 189. They eventually got home with three balls to spare and with seven wickets in hand.Buttler starts, Samson sustainsJos Buttler laced three boundaries off Mohammed Shami early on to give Royals the push they needed to overcome the early loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Samson then came out and batted like a man possessed, standing upright and striking the ball on the up. Clearing his front leg and swinging through cleanly, he hit three fours and two sixes off his first 10 deliveries. His first non-boundary run came in the seventh over. It told you of his intent to give his team the extra runs they may have needed to deal with the dew that was expected later in the evening. Samson raced to 30 off 13 as Royals made 55 for 1 in the first six overs. The slowdownButtler slowed down, initially because Samson took on the aggressor’s role. Then Rashid Khan, who had a favourable match-up against Englishman – four dismissals, strike rate of 60 – had him all at sea with his bag of ripping googlies and legbreaks. Having bowled three overs on the trot for 12, Rashid paved the way for R Sai Kishore to remove Samson to further dent the Royals. Rashid finished with an economy rate of 3.75, mostly because of his genius, but also because the opposition only had six specialist batters and they couldn’t afford to take too many risks.2:41

Manjrekar sees shade of Dhoni in Buttler’s innings progression

The finishFrom the end of the third over to the start of the 15th, Buttler failed to hit a single boundary. And then they came in torrents. He hit left-arm seamer Yash Dayal for four fours in the 17th. The second of those, with Buttler on 43, would’ve been straight down Hardik’s throat at long-off had he not slipped. Two balls later, he raised a fifty off 42 balls. It wasn’t until the 19th over that he hit his first six, and it was quite a hit as he cleared his front leg and walloped Shami way over long-off. The last five overs went for 64, Buttler alone hitting 52.Titans rocked earlyThe Titans lost powerplay maverick Wriddhiman Saha for a duck when he nicked Trent Boult in the first over, but quickly recovered with Shubman Gill and Matthew Wade’s calculated assault. Gill triggered a surge when he took on R Ashwin in the last over of the powerplay. He began with a six over extra cover, before flicking him for two more boundaries as Titans ended the first six on 64 for 1, their highest powerplay score of the season. Gill looked peerless until his innings ended courtesy a mix-up with Wade as he tried to keep strike. Wade, who initially turned for a second, froze to leave Gill stranded. To make matters worse, Wade also fell two overs later as Titans were 85 for 3 in the 10th over.Miller, Hardik see Titans homeMiller and Hardik took calculated risks and peeled off risk-free runs including a 14-run final over from Ashwin that consigned him to 4-0-40-0, his worst figures this season. Titans needed 50 off the last five, but weren’t allowed to break free as Chahal and Obed McCoy kept things tight. McCoy was especially effective with his bag of slower deliveries, and Chahal varied his pace and lengths to bowl a tight 18th that left Titans needing 23 off 12. Miller’s ability to pick boundaries covered up for Hardik’s struggles on what Samson described as a “sticky wicket”. McCoy’s tight 19th that went for just one four meant Royals had the cushion of 16 in the final over. But Miller had other ideas. He went 6,6,6 to give Titans a ticket to their dream finale.

Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell thwart England in familiar fashion after bizarre breakthrough

Yet another century stand for NZ’s old firm as England rue moments that got away

#PoliteEnquiries: How does Daryl Mitchell middle EVERYTHING?!

New Zealand 225 for 5 (Mitchell 78*, Blundell 45*) vs EnglandIt didn’t end up being the day of ascendancy that New Zealand might have envisaged after winning the toss in prime batting conditions, but at least in the continuation of a now-familiar middle-order alliance, it proved to be one in which England were made to work for their breakthroughs, on a day in which their luckiest break of the series couldn’t quite atone for the key moments that got away.By the close at Headingley, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell had combined for their third significant stand of the series, an 102-run alliance for the sixth wicket, to lift their team from a ropey 123 for 5 at tea, and set a new national record in the process too – their total of 593 runs together overtaking the previous record for a single series of 552, set by Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones in their against Sri Lanka in 1990-91.Their partnership could hardly have begun in more bizarre circumstances. Facing up to the spin of Jack Leach in the final over of the afternoon session, Henry Nicholls launched into one of his few attacking strokes in a formless innings of 19 from 99 balls. It should have been his second boundary, but instead the ball deflected off the face of Mitchell’s bat and straight to Alex Lees at mid-off, a moment reminiscent of the late Andrew Symonds’ dismissal in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2006.For Leach, who had already struck with his first ball of the day to trap Will Young lbw, the fluke was due reward for his best day’s work of the series, and it was the cue too for a diligent afternoon of holding-pattern spin bowling, as he twirled his way through 23 consecutive overs either side of tea, for the commendable tight figures of 1 for 54, and 2 for 75 all told.Daryl Mitchell celebrates reaching fifty for the third time this series•Visionhaus/Getty ImagesAnd yet, to judge by the serenity with which Mitchell and Blundell eased through to stumps, England would surely have traded that moment of fortune for a chance to revisit the day’s key flashpoint – a huge mid-afternoon appeal for lbw against Mitchell, on 8 at the time, as Matt Potts thudded an inswinger into his front pad in the midsts of another energetic day’s work.Hawk-Eye showed that the ball would have been hitting middle and leg, but Ben Stokes declined to send the decision upstairs – perhaps as a consequence of a moment, in Potts’ previous spell, when England had lost a review in similar circumstances, when the left-handed Nicholls, on 4, was adjudged by the third umpire Aleem Dar to have inside-edged another inswinger that would have been striking leg stump.Either way, Mitchell’s let-off seemed to be the cue for him to up the ante, particularly against Leach, whom he struck for two fours and a big straight six into the Football Stand in the space of six balls, for all that the spinner was already extracting more turn and bounce than he was able to produce in the whole of the Trent Bridge Test. However, with the arrival of Blundell after tea, Mitchell seemed happy to dial his aggression back once more, as the pair settled into the familiar accumulative pattern that had successfully reinflated their prospects already in the series, most particularly in the second innings at Lord’s.Mitchell allowed himself one significant shot in anger in the rest of his day’s work, a superb lofted drive off Leach to bring up his fifty with a six over long-off, and a single to midwicket in Leach’s final over of the day took him to his overnight 78 not out, as well as bringing up the pair’s third century stand of the series. Blundell for his part reached the close on 45 not out from 108 balls – following directly on from his 96 at Lord’s and his 106 at Trent Bridge, in another indomitably solid day’s work.England, nevertheless, could be broadly satisfied with their efforts. Having clattered along at close to 4 an over in their first innings at Trent Bridge, New Zealand’s close-of-play 225 for 5, with the new ball still shiny, meant that they were still some way short of making full use of Kane Williamson’s correct call at the toss.Jamie Overton capped his first day of Test cricket with the prize scalp of Devon Conway, but England’s day was set in motion by the indefatigable Stuart Broad, who struck with the sixth ball of each of his first two spells – including to remove Tom Latham for a duck in the first over of the match.Ben Stokes and Jack Leach look on in disbelief after Henry Nicholls’ dismissal•Getty ImagesUnder the previous regime, Broad – who turns 36 on Friday – might well have been rested for this fixture, after back-to-back matches at Lord’s and Trent Bridge, and with the delayed fifth Test against India looming large at Edgbaston next week. However, with his sidekick James Anderson already out of contention with an ankle niggle, Broad’s importance as England’s senior seamer was plain to see, right from an exemplary and successful first over that claimed the scalp of Latham for a duck. After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first on a dauntingly straw-coloured pitch, Broad had the left-handed Latham in his sights from the outset, as he hammered a good length from round the wicket in his now-habitual fashion. Latham left his first four balls, but after being drawn forward to block the fifth, he was caught perfectly in two minds by the coup de grace, a length ball on off stump that seamed just enough to take the edge and fly through to Joe Root at first slip.It was another failure in this series for Latham, whose highest score in five outings is 26. But New Zealand’s predicament could have been even worse one Broad delivery later, when Kane Williamson – taking back over from Latham as captain after missing the second Test with Covid – fenced down the leg side and inches past the diving wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, in what had been a deliberate ploy to tuck him up, seeing as Ollie Pope had just been posted at leg slip.At the other end, Young was never allowed to settle into his stay. After a firm back-foot punch off Potts had brought up his first boundary, Young almost lost his middle stump to an ill-judged pull that skidded through lower than anticipated, and on 8, he might have run himself out with a quick single to mid-on, where Potts’ pick-up-and-shy flew inches wide of the stumps. But, having seen off Overton’s brisk-if-nervy first over with another cut for four, and survived an inside-edge into his back pad off Broad, Young got himself into a fatal tangle as Leach entered the attack on the hour mark and made an immediate impression.Leach had endured a torrid series to date – his first home Test for three years at Lord’s lasted less than six overs as he was subbed out of the match with concussion, while he returned match figures of 3 for 226 at Trent Bridge in a display that lacked penetration or control. However, with England seeking to accentuate every available positive under the new team management of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, Leach was able to lap up every ounce of acclaim from a grateful Headingley crowd, who will never forget his starring role on his last appearance before them in 2019, when his crucial 1 not out in partnership with Stokes helped seal England’s thrilling one-wicket Ashes win. He’d already had one standing ovation for his first act of the match, a regulation piece of fielding at fine leg. But the second was far more heartfelt, as he nailed the perfect line and length from round the wicket to Young, dipping the ball into a tangle of pads and extracting the lbw verdict from umpire Marais Erasmus. Young reviewed, but to no avail – he’d got his bat stuck behind his pad on impact as Hawk-Eye showed the ball to be smashing middle stump. At 35 for 2, New Zealand’s decision to bat first was looking perilous. But from the outset of their partnership, Williamson and Conway took a conscious decision to put the pressure back on Leach. Conway’s third delivery was clubbed through the covers for four, before Williamson – after a cautious start to his innings – took the spinner on with two fours in four balls, the first a launch over mid-off that only just cleared the backtracking fielder.Overton’s first five-over spell was seen off for 17 – with a top speed at this stage in the region of 88mph, though he would touch 90mph in the evening session. Broad, however, was now primed to return for his second spell, and once again, he struck the crucial blow with the final ball of his initial over. The key delivery this time was his fifth, a hooping late inswinger that crashed into Williamson’s thigh pad. His follow-up was back in the off-stump channel, but held its line this time, as Williamson dangled fractionally outside his eyeline and snicked a thin edge through to Foakes. One notable absence for England was that of Stokes, whose ability to swing the old ball might have been particularly useful in the afternoon session. He arrived at Headingley a day late after a bout of illness, and he had been struggling with a knee injury in the latter stages of his match-sealing innings at Trent Bridge. But he was busy throughout regardless, marshalling his troops with typical vigour, even if his best intentions were ultimately thwarted by New Zealand’s usual suspects.
