'A million miles away!' – Wrexham transfer guru dashes Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney's dreams of signing Jamie Vardy & Kevin De Bruyne with 'unlimited budget' warning

Wrexham's transfer consultant has explained why Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are a "million miles" from deals for Jamie Vardy or Kevin De Bruyne.

The Red Dragons, with ambitious Hollywood co-owners calling the shots, are expected to be busy in the summer window as they prepare for life in the Championship. There is talk of Premier League pedigree arriving in North Wales.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT LES REED SAID

Many of the household names that Wrexham are being linked with find themselves in the free agent pool, but Les Reed says that does not make deals any easier – or cheaper. He has told : "Let’s take Jamie Vardy. Everyone thinks he’s out of contract, there’s no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You’re talking about players who are on £140,000-a-week. We are a million miles away from that because we don’t get Premier League revenues or broadcasting money.

"I think we were linked with Kevin De Bruyne at one stage! There is a certain level of Premier League player who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get close to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham intend to be competitive, though, with Reed adding on the funds available to manager Phil Parkinson: "We will have a decent budget. Everyone externally thinks we’ve got an unlimited budget because of our owners, but that’s not true. We’ll have a good budget simply because we’ve got very good revenues.

"That’s the benefit of the owners. It’s not their deep pockets, it’s their ability to generate higher revenues, which enables us to spend within the regulations and offer decent salaries."

Wrexham are now one step away from reaching the Premier League, with the plan being to continue a historic run of promotions. Reed said: "We are definitely aiming high; we mustn’t lose that aspiration and momentum.

"We’re not by any means predicting that we’re going to go [straight] to the Premier League, but we don’t just want to go ‘okay, the journey is over, we’re in the Championship, let’s stabilise and consolidate’.

"We need to get through this window with some good recruitment and establish ourselves, not as a survivor, but as a challenger, i.e. in a good season, could we get into the play-offs? We would love to break that record [of four straight promotions] and, given the circumstances, we’ll give it our best shot."

Wolves flop who earned more than Cunha must never play for the club again

Wolverhampton Wanderers would certainly be in the Premier League relegation places if it weren’t for the antics of Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian has been in sensational form for the Old Gold this season, scoring 13 top-flight goals while chipping in with four assists.

Vitor Pereira will be hoping he can persuade the forward to remain in the Midlands this summer, although with clubs showing interest, might he look elsewhere to secure a bigger wage?

The latest on Cunha's future at Wolves

Cunha has been a revelation since joining the club during the winter transfer window in 2023, scoring 31 goals across 85 appearances in all competitions.

This number is made even more impressive by the fact he has often featured in an attacking midfield role, operating behind players such as Jorgen Strand Larsen this season and Hwang Hee-chan last year.

Despite his excellent form and ability, Cunha earns £90k-per-week at the Molineux outfit, ranking him as the top earner alongside the likes of Goncalo Guedes and Pablo Sarabia.

That’s certainly justifiable, despite his recent ban, considering the performances we’ve seen in recent months.

However, he could be on his way out. The Brazilian penned a new contract over the winter but is still fielding interest from Arsenal. Reports emerged last week that their new sporting director Andrea Berta – who signed him at Atletico Madrid – is keen on a reunion.

That said, he’s not the only forward potentially on his way out of Molineux. This one earns even more than Cunha too…

Wolves must sell high-earner this summer

With Wolves’ Premier League status looking pretty safe ahead of next summer, Pereira will be busy planning ahead and working out what the squad will look like.

One player who is unlikely to be in his plans is Fabio Silva whose time in the Midlands could finally come to an end this summer.

Fabio Silva

Indeed, according to journalist Graeme Bailey, Pereira could cash in on the Portuguese attacker.

“I don’t believe Silva will be back, just off his form in Spain he is going to secure a good move and Wolves will take the cash and use it elsewhere,” the reporter noted.

He has just a year left on his £80k-per-week contract with the Old Gold, which means the manager could still command a decent fee for the youngster.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Glasgow Rangers, yet even in Scotland, Silva failed to showcase his true talents, scoring just six goals in 25 appearances for the Ibrox side.

Fabio Silva

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson claimed that “Silva offers you absolutely nothing” in a scathing rant towards the end of the 2023/24 season.

This is staggering, particularly as Silva looked like he could turn into one of the best centre-forwards on the continent when he sealed a staggering £35m move to Wolves aged just 18 in 2020.

Nearly five years later, he has managed to score just a paltry five goals for the club across 72 appearances. Hardly money well spent.

The 22-year-old has spent the current season out on loan at La Liga side Las Palmas, where he has netted eight times in just 20 games for the club.

He even scored against Real Madrid in January and appears to finally be finding his feet. Could this indicate that a move away from Wolves is on the cards this summer?

The supporters will certainly hope so. That’s a certainty.

Hasan Ali, Oliver Hannon-Dalby restore Warwickshire control with last-wicket stand

Momentum had previously been with Essex seamers, led by Doug Bracewell

ECB Reporters Network12-May-2023Essex 126 and 86 for 4 (Westley 28, Rushworth 2-21) trail Warwickshire 242 (Rhodes 63, Hasan 53*, Bracewell 4-51) by 30 runs A buccaneering tenth-wicket stand of 70 restored Warwickshire’s control after Essex fought back hard on the second day of their captivating LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston.Essex closed day two on 86 for 4, still trailing by 30, in a mesmeric contest between two potential title-challengers.After bowling Essex out for 126 on day one, Warwickshire appeared set for only a modest lead when they lost seven wickets in 17 overs to dip to 172 for 9. The momentum was firmly with Essex’s seamers, led by Doug Bracewell’s 4 for 51, but last pair Hasan Ali (53 not out) and Oliver Hannon-Dalby clouted 70 from 69 balls to lift their side to 242.The wagging tail extended the lead to an imposing 116 and piled the pressure back on Essex who need their middle and lower orders to bat big tomorrow. Further twists are likely in a match which has fluctuated wildly throughout. After Warwickshire resumed on the second morning on 17 for 2, Will Rhodes (63) and Sam Hain (45) batted through the morning session to take their side to 104 for 2 at lunch – just 22 behind. A big lead beckoned but the seeds of an Essex fightback had been sown by Sam Cook and Simon Harmer. Late in the morning they bowled 14 overs for 17 runs to ensure that, despite wickets intact, the home side had not got away. Then, after lunch, wickets came in a heap.Shane Snater triggered the collapse with a brace of excellent balls which did for Hain and Dan Mousley in successive overs. Ed Barnard batted attractively for 28 but Bracewell’s removal of him, bowled through a drive, triggered the loss of five wickets in 32 balls. Sam Cook trapped Danny Briggs lbw while Bracewell forced fatal edges from Michael Burgess, Chris Rushworth and Rhodes who, having batted with great responsibility, departed cursing himself at being lured into reaching outside off stump. From 172 for 9, Warwickshire’s last pair brought the crowd to its feet with an audacious counter attack. Hasan Ali began it by launching Cook twice into the Hollies Stand. Hannon-Dalby joined in with successive sixes pulled off Bracewell to raise the 50 stand from as many balls. Hasan located the seating again to bring up his half-century from 33 balls. When Hannon-Dalby finally edged Snater behind, the flow of the match had reversed spectacularly again.Second time around, Essex lost Nick Browne, bowled by Rushworth in the third over. Tom Westley and Alastair Cook started to put down roots of the hefty stand their team required but fell lbw in the space of three overs. Barnard ousted Westley before Hassan dismissed Cook. On a damp, grey afternoon, in front of a smattering of Championship diehards, the former England captain trudged off the Edgbaston field where he enjoyed some of his greatest moments – 294 vs India, 243 vs West Indies – for almost certainly the last time: a poignant dimension to two days of cricket with more angles than you can shake a stick at.

Celtic want to sign dream McGregor replacement who's similar to a £55m star

A big summer awaits for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side.

Having not replaced Kyōgo Furuhashi in January, the Hoops will be targeting a new centre-forward, while Kieran Tierney’s return will create much fanfare, replacing the outgoing Greg Taylor at left-back.

In the meantime, ahead of a huge Champions League play-off tie in August, Rodgers will also be looking to bolster his midfield options, so have the club identified their number on target?

Celtic's 'ideal successor to Callum McGregor'

It’s safe to say that Rodgers and Co have been winning plaudits for their recruitment, and it’s clear to see why. The return of a fan favourite in Jota got supporters off their seats and the same will occur when Tierney puts pen to paper in the summer. He was, after all, a bit of a legend during his first stint at Parkhead.

So, what’s next for the Celts?

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, as reported by Football Insider, Celtic have ‘identified’ midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj as Callum McGregor’s ‘ideal successor’, adding that current club Augsburg may be willing to sell for as little as £3m, considering he is out of contract in 2026.

A further report from Sky Sports Germany suggests that the Premiership outfit are ‘monitoring’ his situation in Germany, with Besiktas and Hoffenheim also interested in his services.

Rexhbecaj played alongside Celtic’s record-signing Arne Engles 38 times in Bavaria, with the 27-year-old having made 84 appearances for the Fuggerstädter in total, previously spending time at fellow-Bundesliga clubs Wolfsburg, Köln and Bochum.

In an interview with FIFA’s official site, Rexhbecaj stated he is “happy at Augsburg”, adding that “I’ve got the sense that I’m here for the long haul”, but with his contract running down, could the German club decide to sell?

How Elvis Rexhbeçaj would improve Celtic

Rexhbecaj’s performances for Augsburg this season have been described as ‘fantastic’ by local media, deployed in numerous different midfield positions by manager Jess Thorup, but predominantly playing as a defensive anchor.

So, let’s analyse his Bundesliga statistics.

As the table outlines, Rexhbeçaj’s statistics don’t exactly leap off the page, as he is pretty solid, if unspectacular, when it comes to passing as well as all of the defensive metrics, namely ball recoveries, interceptions, blocks and tackles.

Nevertheless, considering that Dominik Schneider of FussballTransfers reports that Parma, Beşiktaş and numerous EFL Championship clubs are all also ‘interested’ in signing him and the fact that FBRef compares him to Newcastle’s £55m man Sandro Tonali, he must be doing something right.

So, could he be the perfect McGregor deputy, perhaps even the captain’s long-term successor?

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Last month’s Glasgow derby defeat to Rangers at Parkhead hammered home McGregor’s importance to this Celtic team, with Rodgers himself admitting afterwards that there’s “no doubt” his team missed the skipper, struggling to cope without the “tactical balance” he provides.

Kieran Devlin of the Athletic labeled McGregor Celtic’s ‘most important player’, and the Hoops’ lack of midfield control without him highlighted why.

So, let’s see how McGregor and Rexhbeçaj compare.

As the table outlines, McGregor comes out on top for pretty much every metric this season, % of ground duels won the sole exception, albeit there are stylistic similarities between the pair.

It’s also worth taking into account that Rexhbeçaj is playing at a considerably higher level; according to Global Football Rankings, the Bundesliga is the third strongest league in the world, while the Scottish Premiership ranks 43rd.

What is clear is that Celtic require midfield reinforcements so if Rexhbecaj is available at a cut-price this summer, he could be a useful addition.
