After joining Liverpool from Benfica in 2022, Nunez has endured a mixed spell at the club, with flashes of promise overshadowed by inconsistency in front of goal. Although Al-Nassr attempted to sign him during the January transfer window, it is Napoli who now seem poised to secure his signature in a deal that could be worth around €50 million (£43m/$58m).

Arne Slot is eager to fill that void, and, according to , they are preparing to disrupt Arsenal’s pursuit of Gyokeres, with the Sporting CP striker now being identified as a leading candidate to replace Nunez. The Merseyside club has instructed intermediaries to get them information about the exact asking price for the 26-year-old, who is believed to have a release clause of €80m (£68m/$93m).

Gyokeres has already made it clear to Sporting that he wants to leave this summer, following a stellar campaign in which he finished as one of the top scorers across Europe. Arsenal have been leading the race for him in recent weeks, but Liverpool are reportedly preparing a serious push to beat their rivals to the striker's signature. The striker has previously rejected a potential reunion with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim at Manchester United and is carefully weighing his next move.

In addition to Nunez, Colombian winger Luis Díaz is also being linked with a departure from Liverpool. Barcelona are reportedly monitoring his situation closely and are described as “very interested” in securing his services. If those sales are completed, Liverpool will have the funds necessary to invest further after breaking the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz. A move for Gyokeres, with his scoring pedigree, may soon become a priority for the Anfield hierarchy.

Borthwick hundred, Robinson fireworks keep Worcestershire waiting on promotion

Worcestershire will need three points from their final game to be sure of going up

ECB Reporters Network22-Sep-2023Worcestershire require a maximum of three more points to follow opponents Durham into Division One of the LV=Insurance County Championship next season despite being frustrated by the newly crowned champions on the final day at New Road.Durham captain Scott Borthwick scored a chanceless century and then Ollie Robinson illuminated the afternoon session with some glorious stroke-play.Worcestershire were restricted to adding one bowling point as the game petered out into a draw to bring their run of three successive victories to an end. They spilled a series of chances but the washout of nearest challengers Leicestershire’s game with Yorkshire at the Uptonsteel County Ground leaves them strong favourites to be promoted.Worcestershire remain 21 points ahead of the Foxes heading into next week’s final fixture with Yorkshire at Headingley while Leicestershire take on Durham at the Emirates Riverside. But the fact Worcestershire will have won more games than their nearest rivals whatever the outcome of the remaining matches means three more points will suffice.Durham had achieved their primary objective in sealing the title but no one could accuse them of not having a full focus on proceedings. They resumed on 10 for 0 and Lees had a let off in the opening over of the day from Joe Leach when he survived a sharp chance to fourth slip. But Worcestershire did make a breakthrough in the next over although it was off Durham’s own making. Lees played a delivery from Dillon Pennington to cover but Michael Jones came charging down the wicket looking for a quick single and was run out by Logan van Beek’s throw to Joe Leach at the non-striker’s end as he failed to regain his ground.Strong resistance to Worcestershire’s hopes of acquiring more bowling bonus points came from Lees and Durham captain Borthwick.Lees, the leading run-scorer in Division Two, made Worcestershire pay for his early escape as he completed a 60-ball half-century with six fours. The partnership was worth 77 when Ben Allison, on loan from Essex, accounted for Lees lbw after he attempted to work the ball to leg.Rain brought about the early lunch and when play resumed new batter David Bedingham had a let off on 10 when he was dropped at first slip off Pennington. He made an uncertain start and successive deliveries from Leach wide of third slip for boundaries and also a leading edge just escaped the clutches of bowler van Beek.Borthwick on drove van Beek for his 10th boundary in reaching a 105 ball fifty and his stand with Bedingham was worth 89 before Allison secured the first bowling point. Bedingham (39) went to drive the allrounder and was bowled at 181 for 3.Robinson had scored a magnificent 206 not out of 131 balls against Worcestershire for Kent in last season’s One-Day Cup and he immediately looked in excellent touch with a series of exquisite shots.Borthwick needed only 38 balls to move from fifty to his second Championship century of the season, pulling Pennington for his 19th boundary.Robinson completed a 42-ball fifty and by tea the fourth wicket pair had plundered 143 from 19 overs during a session which yielded 210 runs. A century looked there for the taking for Robinson but on 84 he lofted Kashif Ali to long on to give the spinner his maiden first-class wicket. It left Borthwick unbeaten on 134 when a heavy shower half an hour after tea ended proceedings.

Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab.”Shakib’s injury caps a dramatic 24 hours for him. During Bangladesh’s three-wicket win over Sri Lanka yesterday, he had initiated the appeal which resulted in Angelo Mathews becoming the first batter to be dismissed timed out in international cricket. After the game, Shakib said that he had felt like he was at a war out on the field.Bangladesh have lost six of their eight games so far in this World Cup campaign, putting them out of contention for the semis. But they still have hopes of qualifying for the Champions Trophy 2025; a top-eight finish on the table would seal that. Chelsea and Fluminense will do battle in the Club World Cup semi-finals with a place in July 13's final up for grabs, where they will face a European heavyweight in either Real Madrid or PSG. But first, Silva will reunite with several of his old Blues team-mates, including Cucurella, who had glowing praise for the legendary centre-back.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Silva may be 40 years old, but he has been commanding as ever for Fluminense in this tournament on their way to the last four, conceding just three goals in five games which included clean sheets against European giants Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund before quarter-final victory over Al-Hilal.

The former PSG and AC Milan defender had a similar influence on the side when he arrived for a second spell at the Brazilian outfit in July 2024, inspiring his boyhood club to a stunning run of clean sheets and survival from relegation. This season they have pushed on under Silva's captaincy and sit sixth in Brasileiro Serie A.

WHAT CUCURELLA SAID

Cucurella said: “We’ve watched some of their games. They have very good players, they are very determined and they have Thiago Silva. He’s a legend of football, a top player. He’s only played for big clubs and texted me before the [quarter-final] game saying, ‘Let’s go, hopefully we can see you in a couple of days’. I texted him saying, ‘Let’s go'! We have the opportunity to play against him again and hopefully we can do good things and win this game and play in the final which is what we want to do.

“[Fluminense] have a very high level. They have shown in this tournament why they are going right until the final [stages]. We’ve played against two Brazilian teams so far and now we will face a third. They fight until the end. We’re happy to be in the next round and to have this experience of playing against the South American teams, which isn’t very common. Overall, we’re enjoying this tournament.”

Cucurella and Silva will both hope to be on the winning side when Chelsea and Fluminense face off on the evening of Tuesday, July 8. For both clubs, the prospect of getting their hands on the Club World Cup trophy is getting tantalisingly close. Chelsea would view it as the perfect ending to a successful first season under Enzo Maresca, while Fluminense could become the first Brazilian winners of the competition since 2012 in what would be a monumental achievement.

The Catalan club have been linked with both players, having made Diaz a top target if they fail to get the deal to sign Williams from Athletic Club over the line. The players are currently enjoying their summer break, and Olmo admitted that he sopke to Colombia star Diaz when they met in Ibiza.

Despite Barca's agreement with Spain winger Williams, Athletic Club have complained and called for the club to be audited, while La Liga president Javier Tebas has warned the club cannot register a big new signing at this point. If that deal collapses, a new approach for Diaz could be made, but Olmo has heaped praise on him as he discussed the prospect of a transfer.

WHAT OLMO SAID

Speaking about Diaz, Olmo informed the media: “If we talk about it, I'll keep it to myself. It was a private conversation. I didn't know him. He's a great person. He's a world-class player, and Barca should have the best players. He's proven it. He's a world-class striker and winger, there's no doubt about that.”

He went on to discuss Williams, saying: “Nico is another example. I don't know anything. We'll talk during the holidays. Nico is a very top player, but we have to respect the fact that he's not a Barça player. The best have to play at Barça. Nico is a great player. He's shown the level he brings with his club and the national team. We already know how he would adapt. I like to play with the best", he mentioned.

Keshav Maharaj caps unlikely World Cup comeback with cathartic winning role

Spinner shows emotions in victory having battled back from serious Achilles rupture

Deivarayan Muthu27-Oct-2023Keshav Maharaj was just having dinner around the time when Pakistan’s concussion substitute Usama Mir pinned Rassie van der Dussen lbw for 21. South Africa were 121 for 3 at that point, needing a further 150 runs off almost 30 overs. Given South Africa’s gun middle-order – Aiden Markram at No.4, Heinrich Klaasen No.5 and David Miller at No.6 – Maharaj might have felt like he could just put his feet up during the chase, having put in a shift with the ball in Chennai’s oppressive heat. But it eventually came down to him scoring the winning runs for South Africa with No.11 Tabraiz Shamsi at the other end, lifting the lid on what had become a cauldron of immense tension at Chepauk. When left-arm fingerspinner Mohammad Nawaz darted one into the thigh from around the wicket, Maharaj coolly shuffled and played a half-pull, half-paddle, directing the ball between midwicket and short fine leg. He also comfortably beat the man on the square-leg boundary.”I think it was a surreal moment,” Maharaj said after South Africa’s one-wicket triumph. “You always dream of winning games for your country, but winning games in a World Cup…it’s very special. Those are the moments that you cherish, building up towards the tournament.”To be honest, there were a lot of thoughts running through my head. I was just watching the ball and fortunate enough I was in a position where I could just score and place it in the gap.”Maharaj wasn’t supposed to be ready for the World Cup in the first place. But he made a remarkable return – a ruptured Achilles tendon usually takes nine months to heal but he was back on the park in less than six – to make it to India. He has roots in the country and now they’ve only grown stronger. On Friday, in front of almost 30,000 spectators in Chennai, he delivered a remarkable . He celebrated it with cathartic chest thumps and roars.”It was one of those moments for me,” Maharaj said. “I knew how big the win is for the team. I think that’s why the emotions were on a high.”Maharaj had got together with Shamsi, with South Africa needing 11 off 27 balls. Haris Rauf had just pulled off a sensational one-handed return catch in his follow-through to dismiss Lungi Ngidi for 4. Shamsi had to see off three legal balls from Rauf and then front up to an over from Mohammad Wasim, who was getting the ball to fizz off the Chepauk deck. But the last-wicket pair knocked off those 11 runs in as many balls to seal the deal.Related

South Africa have another 'C' word to deal with

“Fortunately enough, the batters set a bit of foundation and we didn’t have too much [to score] at the back end, so yes, now and then there was a ball to take a risk,” Maharaj said. “But if you look at the bigger picture, with 40 balls to go…we knew if we batted those 40 balls, we would be able to score. Yeah, I had to fight temptation now and then, but I knew if we could take it deep, we could cross over the line.”Maharaj is a capable batter with two first-class centuries and five Test fifties to his name. But did he trust Ngidi and Shamsi to stick around with him, when the Pakistan quicks were generating some serious reverse-swing?”Yeah, definitely,” Maharaj said. “It’s easy for me to stand here and lie to you guys [laughs]. I genuinely did. Especially Lungi, he showed that he could stick around, especially in the game against Netherlands. We had simple plans and unfortunately, he got out to a really good ball and a good catch. Shammo and I have played a lot of cricket together and he’s pretty much like me when it comes to the hamster running in the head, but I’m really glad that he held his nerve. We just kept it simple. And he said to me he’s seeing it [the ball] big.”Maharaj was also particularly happy with the depth in South Africa’s attack. Prior to the start of the World Cup, Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala were both ruled out with injuries and, during the tournament, they’ve had to deal with niggles to Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada, who missed this match after a back spasm. But Gerald Coetzee has emerged from the fringes and has become South Africa’s enforcer in the middle overs. He has taken 10 wickets in five matches between overs 11 and 40 – the most by any fast bowler during this phase in this World Cup. And in Lucknow and Chennai, where the pitches are traditionally slow and low, they’ve paired Shamsi up with Maharaj.”Fortunately enough, we have a lot of depth from a fast bowlers’ perspective,” Maharaj said. “And I’m really pleased to see Gerald come through leaps and bounds. It just shows the quality that we have in our squad and I’m especially really happy for Shammo. He’s done an amazing job. He’s done some really hard yards in the nets and it’s good to see it pay off.”South Africa picked both Maharaj and Shamsi to do the job with the ball at Chepauk. As it turned out, they finished the job with the bat, too, putting South Africa on the top of the standings.

Behrendorff and McKenzie shine as Scorchers overpower feeble Stars

The visitors chased down the target with more than six overs to spare to get their title defence up and running after a false start

AAP13-Dec-2023Two-time defending champions Perth Scorchers remained the BBL benchmark, overpowering Melbourne Stars by seven wickets at the MCG.After skittling Stars’ top order on Wednesday night and dismissing them for 101 in 19.1 overs, the five-time winners extended their winning streak over them to six. Scorchers’ left-arm opening bowler Jason Behrendorff starred with 3 for 28, including a rare T20 double wicket maiden after the visitors won the toss and made the most of the humid conditions.”It’s a nice start after a false start in Geelong – we talked about being aggressive and throwing the first punch … we did it quite well tonight,” he said.As the BBL goes into a break until December 19, it has been an underwhelming tournament so far with the Geelong non-result and a washout among the seven matches. The obvious difference on Wednesday night was the fortunes of the two top orders – Stars lost their first two wickets in as many overs while the top three Scorchers all made at least 20.Stars were energetic in the field, but run-out chances went begging – opener Cooper Connolly backed up too far on the second ball of the Scorchers innings and would have been well short had Nick Larkin’s throw hit the stumps. Aaron Hardie had only made 1 when Liam Dawson’s throw also just missed.Connolly scored 20, fellow opener Stevie Eskinazi made 25 and Hardie contributed 20 at No. 3 to anchor the innings. It was a tale of near-misses in the field for Stars – Josh Inglis had made 7 at 75 for 3 when he misjudged a delivery from spinner Usama Mir, and Haris Rauf just failed to reach a difficult chance.Behrendorff had earlier snared acting Stars captain Marcus Stoinis and Nick Larkin in the ninth over.As good as Scorchers were, Stars batted poorly on a wicket that had been under cover for much of the last 48 hours.No. 8 Liam Dawson (22) and Rauf showed up their team-mates by putting on 21 for the last wicket and taking the score past 100, while Hilton Cartwright top-scored with 24 from 18 balls.A missed run-out chance and a dropped catch spared Stars from an even more embarrassing total.Left-arm wristspinner Hamish McKenzie was on a hat-trick in the 14th over when he dismissed Cartwright and Mir for his first BBL wickets, but Joel Paris safely defended his first delivery. Player-of-the-match McKenzie impressed with a miserly 2 for 12 from his overs.Melbourne’s inclement start to December had threatened to disrupt the game, with rain forecast for Wednesday night but the showers stayed away. With Glenn Maxwell (forearm) injured, Stoinis captained Stars, who were also be without Nathan Coulter-Nile (calf) and Joe Burns (illness).

Stokes on Leach absence: 'If we want to turn to Bashir, we will'

England captain confirms absence of senior spinner but confident that rookie can step up

Vithushan Ehantharajah31-Jan-2024Ben Stokes has confirmed that Jack Leach will not be available for the second Test in Visakhapatnam after failing to recover from a knee injury sustained during the first Test.Leach hurt his knee fielding on the first day of the Test in Hyderabad, before exacerbating the issue on the second morning. Though restricted to short spells for the rest of the match, Leach managed to bowl 10 overs in the second innings and dismissed Shreyas Iyer as England sealed a famous 28-run win.It was hoped the issue – a deep bruise – would settle down, but constant swelling meant Leach was unable to take part in the training session on Wednesday at the ACA-VDCA cricket ground. Wearing compression tights, he was still laboured in his movements.Stokes will wait until Thursday to name his XI, with a decision to make on whether England go with an extra seamer after one final look at the pitch. On Wednesday, however, he confirmed Leach, having just returned from a lay-off due to a back stress fracture, would miss out.”He’s ruled out of the second Test,” Stokes said. “Unfortunately, the knock he took resulted in a haematoma in his leg. It’s a big shame for us, a big shame for Jack, obviously after a long time out of the game with his back.”To sustain that injury, first game back, obviously it’s frustrating. But it’s something we’re assessing every day. The medical team have taken over that, and hopefully, it’s not something that’s too serious and keeps him out for longer in the series.”Waiting in the wings is Leach’s Somerset team-mate, Shoaib Bashir. The uncapped offspinner arrived in India during the first Test after a delay in his entry visa. Now back among the group and training, Stokes urged Bashir to seize the opportunity, in what would be only his seventh first-class match.”If he was to play on this tour, then the great thing he has on his side is, what is there to lose?” Stokes said. “That is how I will be thinking about it, if he gets the chance to play: just to make sure I can give him the best experience I possibly can. Because you only play your first Test match once. If he does play, then I will be trying to make it as enjoyable and fun for him as I can.Bashir looks on from the England corner after his late arrival in India•AFP/Getty Images”Myself, Baz [Brendon McCullum] and Popey [vice-captain Ollie Pope] will probably have a longer think about it. We looked at the wicket; I gave it a tap, and a play-around to make it look like I knew what I was doing. Bash is in the squad, we haven’t brought him here to have an experience. If we feel we want to turn to him, we will.”Having returned to London from the UAE to get his visa resolved, Bashir landed in Hyderabad at 8.25am last Sunday – day four of the first Test – before showering and heading straight to the ground. Stokes was buoyed by his enthusiasm to get back among the squad.”I mentioned to Wayne [Bentley, the England team manager] that Bash doesn’t have to stay here if he doesn’t want to. But he was like, ‘no, no, I’m staying for this.'” Bashir was rewarded with a thrilling finale, as fellow newbie spinner Tom Hartley took 7 for 62 to bowl India out for 202 in pursuit of a target of 231.Related

“It was great for him to see that on his first day back in the camp and to see what Test cricket can bring out, and what it is like,” said Stokes. “He would have seen it on TV before but to be in the dressing room and see the emotion as well I think was great for him. He knows what it is like and hopefully it wants to make him do it even more.”Stokes also revealed his first exposure to Bashir came about through social media, bowling an impressive spell to Alastair Cook on his first-class debut for Somerset against Essex. Though Bashir would only take one wicket across 49 overs in the match, Stokes was already hooked, and sent it on to McCullum and managing director Rob Key.Jack Leach and Ben Stokes take a breather•Getty Images”To be perfectly honest, Abu Dhabi was the first real live look I got at Bash,” Stokes said. “The first time I saw him was on Twitter. I think the County Championship [account] put a little clip together of him bowling against Sir Alastair.”I’m in a WhatsApp group with Keysy and Baz. I actually did forward the clip on and said, ‘have a look at this, this could be something we could work with on our India tour’ and it just progressed from there. He got selected on the Lions tour and obviously the coaches on that tour fed back everything to us.”Should Bashir make the XI, it would be an even bolder call than Hartley’s inclusion for the series opener considering the Lancashire spinner had 14 more first-class matches under his belt before receiving his maiden cap. Bashir’s overall record is a modest 10 wickets at 67 from six appearances. But Stokes, having led his third debutant spinner to a five-wicket haul, after Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed’s hauls in Pakistan last winter, believes Bashir has the tools to achieve similar success in these conditions.”I just saw something,” he said. “The height he bowled from, it was very obvious that he put a lot of action, a lot of revolutions on the ball. It was something I looked at and thought, this could be pretty good for India. I’ve played a lot of games out here. As a batter you know what is hard to face, especially from a spin point of view.”When it came to selection, there wasn’t too much thought around him to be honest, because everyone was very, very impressed with what Bash showed. And everything we wanted in our spin group was answered by Bashir.”

Napoli have backed out of the race to sign Atlanta's Ademola Lookman after he rejected them and, according to , they have identified Manchester City's Grealish and Liverpool's Chiesa, both of whom are expected to leave their respective clubs this summer. While Grealish, who was a €100 million (£86m/$117m) signing back in 2021, has two years left on his contract, Chiesa penned a long-term deal until 2028 at Anfield last summer. But minimal game-time for both players has urged them to find new clubs.

In their last Premier League fixture against Fulham, City boss Pep Guardiola handed Claudio Echeverri his debut, despite having Grealish on the bench. This seemingly made clear that the English winger is not part of Guardiola's plans and City now want to offload him. Chiesa, who joined the Reds last summer, enjoyed only 466 minutes across 14 games across all competitions and is now ready to step out of Anfield, even on loan. After securing the services of Kevin De Bruyne, Conte wants to rectify the flanks, and either of the two wingers could be a possible solution to the team's problem.
