Chelsea’s "Lazy" £100k-p/w Flop Has Rinsed The Club

Chelsea are no strangers to splashing the cash in order to secure the very best talent to join the club. Millions have been spent over the previous two decades to bring the Blues up to a level where they can regularly challenge for glory and following five Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies and a handful of other domestic silverware, the strategy appears to be working.

Of course, it isn’t without its faults as unless you have a near-flawless scouting network, big money will be spent on players who will naturally underachieve and fail to live up to the lofty expectations.

The likes of Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic and Romelu Lukaku have all arrived at the club recently for extortionate sums and notably underperformed.

However, there is one player in particular that Frank Lampard signed who is continuing to bleed the club dry; Hakim Ziyech.

What salary is Ziyech on at Chelsea?

The Moroccan winger agreed to join the club from Ajax in February 2020 for a fee believed to be £33.3m before joining up with Lampard and his new team that summer ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

His form for the Dutch side during 2018/19 was simply stunning and was clearly a big factor in the club signing him. He played a key part as Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League while registering a mightily impressive 45 goal contributions across all competitions – 21 goals and 24 assists.

His spell at Chelsea so far has been a disappointment compared to the statistics he registered for the Eredivisie side and across 102 games, he has scored just 14 goals and grabbed 11 assists, a far cry from the numbers he was expected to reach upon his arrival.

Indeed, this season has been terrible even by his standards. Ziyech has just one assist from 19 matches, and it’s no wonder he has been described as “lazy” by the supporters, including podcaster Ryan Whitney.

Hakim-Ziyech-Chelsea

With the January spending spiralling out of control, Graham Potter will need to move on some deadwood during the summer in order to balance the books and the winger should be the first name to go. Across his near three-year spell at the club, the player has rinsed Chelsea of £49m, combining his transfer fee along with his £100k-per-week wages.

Hopefully, the Englishman will take note of his predecessor's failings and spend wisely in the transfer market to avoid expensive duds ransacking the club even further.

£350k-p/w Man United Man slammed

YouTuber Mark Goldbridge has slammed Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho for his poor display in the club's most recent defeat.

What's the latest on Jadon Sancho and Man United?

The Red Devils have been far from their best of late in the Premier League with their last win coming back in February against relegation candidates Leicester City.

However, they had the chance to give their Champions League ambitions a big boost as they travelled away to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Unfortunately for Erik ten Hag and co, they let this opportunity slip through their fingers as goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson sealed a 2-0 defeat at St James' Park.

Already 1-0 down, Sancho was given 28 minutes off the bench to try and make an impact but was unable to prevent a defeat for Man United.

While talking about the player on The United Stand, Goldbridge made it abundantly clear that he was not at all impressed by the Englishman's cameo.

Indeed, he said (2:44): "Jadon Sancho can't defend. He lost his place in the team in October because he won't defend.

"And he's just come on the pitch against Newcastle where they're dominating, and he's stood up front on the right wing.

You've got to defend. He doesn't defend, he can't defend. So what's the point? He is a luxury player. He is a luxury player in a team that can't afford a luxury player.

"I like Sancho but he's got a big problem at Man United because he's a luxury player in a team, in a league, where you can't have luxury players in."

Is Jadon Sancho a luxury player?

Seeing as Sancho makes a reported £350k-p/w, big things will always be expected of the 23-year-old winger. But with just four league goals and one assist in the league this term, he's not really delivered in an attacking sense.

And so, if he isn't doing his defensive duty – just as Goldbridge claims – it's not hard to see why he might be viewed as a bit of a problem within the squad.

In his player ratings for the Manchester Evening News, Sam Luckhurst gave Sancho and 5/10 for his efforts and noted that he "did nothing to get United going in attack".

And when you look at the player's stats on SofaScore, that claim is backed up by the player's inability to have a shot at goal or even attempt a cross as he lost the ball six times in his 27-minute cameo.

He didn't manage to make any clearances, blocked shots, or interceptions either and won just one tackle. So it really does seem as though he gave little to the cause as Man Utd suffered a major blow with this defeat that sees them drop to fourth.

Ten Hag Must Ditch Man Utd’s Woeful £190k-p/w Dud

As Manchester United prepare to take on Sevilla in the Europa League this evening at Old Trafford, one man who will no doubt be hoping to remain in the starting lineup is club captain, Harry Maguire, with the England international having produced a solid display against Everton last weekend.

The 30-year-old seemingly looked like a "different" player in that win over the Toffees, according to manager Erik ten Hag, with the towering centre-back having been "dominating his opponent" and showing "so much initiative".

Despite that strong showing, however, it would appear that the former Leicester City ace remains among those who could be allowed to depart Old Trafford this summer, having fallen way down the pecking order under the ex-Ajax boss.

The £190k-per-week man – who was branded "woeful" earlier in the campaign by pundit Lianne Sanderson – has notably made just two starts in United's European run thus far, with it set to be no surprise if teammate Raphael Varane takes his place once again alongside Lisandro Martinez.

Will Maguire start vs Sevilla?

There may also be bad memories among Red Devils supporters regarding Maguire's performance when the Old Trafford outfit took on today's opponents in the Europa League semi-final back in 2020, with the Sheffield native having somewhat cost his side in that disappointing 2-1 defeat.

The £80m man was seemingly culpable as the Spanish outfit drew level midway through the first half in that meeting, bizarrely allowing the ball to run across the box and find former Liverpool winger Suso at the back post, rather than attempting an interception.

The central defender also appeared somewhat out of position as opposition forward Luuk de Jong struck what proved to be the winning goal late on, with club legend Paul Scholes having been particularly critical of Maguire and the rest of the backline:

"You can almost blame the whole back four for this goal. Firstly, [Brandon] Williams doesn’t get to the ball. Where Maguire is, I’m not too sure, he has to drop in, surely."

Man United's Harry Maguire vs Sevilla in 2020

While much of the blame was undoubtedly placed on his centre-back colleague Victor Lindelof for failing to stay with his man, Maguire's inaction epitomised what was a disappointing individual display, as he lost possession on 11 occasions and won just six of his ten total duels.

The skipper also came in for criticism from Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, with the respected insider awarding the struggling asset a measly 5/10 match rating, while writing:

'Let the captaincy go to his head with some pointless protests which led to Maguire losing his focus and being admonished by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.'

That "leggy" outing from Maguire – as per pundit Danny Murphy – certainly did not help his cause, even if the one-time Hull City ace wasn't the only villain on the day, with Ten Hag likely hoping to avoid a repeat scenario occurring this time around.

For all the positive strides that the 6 foot 4 dud made against Sean Dyche's men last Saturday, the calming presence of multiple Champions League winner, Varane, could be what is needed in the backline tonight.

Liverpool Could Ditch Gomez For £680-p/w Teen

It is fair to say that the major priority for Liverpool this summer will be to bolster the midfield ranks, with some reports suggesting that the Merseysiders could make as many as three signings in that department ahead of next season.

Aside from the centre of the park, however, the Reds may also be in need of a long-term solution at centre-back, with Joel Matip having been linked with a departure of late, while Ibrahima Konate has been dogged by injury during his time in England.

The other senior option at the heart of the backline – aside from towering Dutchman, Virgil van Dijk – is 25-year-old, Joe Gomez, albeit with the Englishman also proving rather unreliable in recent times.

As BBC pundit Alan Shearer noted following the car crash 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid back in February, the former Charlton Athletic man simply "makes too many mistakes", having proven something of a liability for Jurgen Klopp's men.

The 11-cap brute was also said to be enduring a footballing "nightmare" amid that grim loss to Los Blancos, according to journalist Uri Levy, with it perhaps time that the Anfield outfit look elsewhere to find a more suitable answer to that defensive problem.

As such, Klopp could well help to ditch the £85k-per-week man by looking to the academy ranks for a potential star of the future, with 18-year-old, Terence Miles seemingly one such exciting gem.

Who is Terence Miles?

While the youngster has yet to make his mark at first-team level, he is clearly already attracting attention due to his displays in the youth set-up, having been branded "outstanding" by club legend Jamie Carragher during the win over rivals Manchester United for the U18's back in August.

The teenager's header in that 4-2 victory over the Red Devils was one of three goals that he has scored in just 11 Premier League games at U18 level this term, having also laid on one assist in that time.

The promising, £680-per-week talent – who can also operate in a right-back berth if required – has also been rewarded for his fine form at that age group with a chance to impress at Premier League 2 level, making eight appearances in that competition this season.

Liverpool's Joe Gomez

Unlike Gomez – who ranks in just the bottom 46% for pass completion among his European peers – Miles appears to be far more adept in possession, having been described by the club's official website as:

'A good reader of the game, he steps out confidently with the ball from the back and distributes well.'

Also hailed as a 'strong centre-back' by the same source, young Miles appears to have the traits required to be a dominant, yet ball-playing presence at the heart of Klopp's backline, ensuring that he could prove a dream successor or replacement to the struggling Gomez in the years to come.

Tottenham Willing To Break Transfer Record To Sign £199k-p/w Star

Tottenham Hotspur are willing to break their transfer record to sign Barcelona forward Ansu Fati this summer, according to a recent report.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

Tottenham may need to look at bringing in some new attacking options this summer, with pundit Frank McAvennie claiming that Harry Kane "has had enough" at N17, and could look at moving to Manchester United. To replace the England captain, Spurs could sign Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Evan Ferguson, with it recently being reported the club view the Irish forward as the 'heir apparent' to Kane, amid a real breakthrough season with the Seagulls.

Ferguson is not the only target in attack, as the Lilywhites have also scouted Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez, although there will be stiff competition for the Mexican's signature, with the likes of Brighton and Man United also interested.

Now, according to reports from Spain (via Caught Offside), Tottenham are willing to break their club-record £63m transfer fee to sign Fati, and the forward could be tempted to leave Barcelona in the summer. Spurs depserately want to strengthen their attack, and they want the 20-year-old to play alongside Heung-min Son and Kane, although the latter could seek a move at the end of the season.

Currently, the youngster plans to stay at Barca, however a tempting offer from the north London club could change things in the next transfer window.

Should Tottenham sign Ansu Fati?

The £199k-per-week Spaniard has predominantly played on the left-wing throughout his career so far, which indicates he is not an out-and-out replacement for Kane, but he would still be a fantastic addition to the squad nonetheless.

Football scout Jacek Kulig has waxed lyrical about the starlet, describing him as "destined for greatness", while Guillem Balague has lauded him as "extraordinary", also adding he has an "unbelievable capacity to finish a move with the right decision".

Barcelona winger Ansu Fati

The Bissau-born forward has recorded four goals and three assists in 27 La Liga appearances so far this season, however it must be noted that he has often been utilised as a substitute, as a result of Barca's considerable depth in attacking areas.

At Tottenham, Fati could receive more regular game time, particularly if Kane does decide to leave this summer, and the only question mark is in relation to his price, as over £63m is a huge sum for a player yet to prove themselves as an elite player.

"Huge" – Expert Reacts To Leeds Takeover Update

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani will still make a “huge” profit at Elland Road even if the club are relegated to the Championship, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire.

What’s the latest Leeds takeover news?

The Whites once again failed to pick up three points on Tuesday evening in the Premier League and now find themselves just two points above the drop zone having played a game more than the current bottom three.

A 1-1 draw against relegation rivals Leicester City has seen Javi Gracia’s side go four games without a win, with an away trip to Bournemouth on Sunday looking like a make or break fixture.

The threat of relegation looks like it would have a serious impact off the pitch as well, with the 49ers Enterprises currently having a deal in place to take over from Radrizzani in a deal worth around £420m.

However, according to The Daily Mail, the 49ers would still be interested in Leeds should the suffer relegation, although they’d only be willing to pay around £150m.

Talking to Football Insider, Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, said that Radrizzani, who paid £45m for Leeds in 2017, would still be making a “huge” profit as it would be a “record-breaking” deal in the EFL.

“If Leeds United are relegated and then sold for £150million to the 49ers then it would still constitute a record-breaking price paid for an EFL club.

“That is indicative of the stature of Leeds as a significant player in English football.

“While the owner would be disappointed with the price and fans would be disappointed with relegation, it’s hard to argue that Radrizzani could negotiate the fee any further.

“A sale of £150million still provides a huge profit from Radrizzani’s point of view. The club would benefit from three years of parachute payments to allow it to climatise to the Championship also.”

Fingers crossed…

Everyone at Elland Road will be hoping that Radrizzani gets the £420m fee agreed with the 49ers, as Leeds would still be a Premier League club heading into the 2023/24 season.

However, with results not falling into place on the pitch and supporters turning on the current board, in particular sporting director Victor Orta, it does feel as if relegation is a real possibility.

Hopefully that isn’t the case, but it is good to know that the 49ers, who currently hold a 44% stake in the club, are in for the long haul.
