West Brom: Who Is Reyes Cleary?

It is unclear at the moment how much Carlos Corberan will be backed by West Bromwich Albion in the summer after the Baggies narrowly missed out on a playoff spot in the Championship this season.

The Spaniard took over from Steve Bruce with the Midlands side remarkably occupying a relegation spot and took them on a superb run of form which carried them into the top six, but ultimately they fell short.

Therefore, a strong summer could make West Brom one of the favourites for promotion next season but with the financial situation under Guochuan Lai looking grim, it seems unlikely that the Baggies will be making many big-money signings.

Corberan may be forced to look towards the academy in his search for new first-team players and could find a Championship-ready talent in Reyes Cleary.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a superb campaign in Premier League 2 and with the Baggies' strikers continuing to misfire, with no player scoring more than seven times in the league, perhaps he could be given a chance next season.

Who is Reyes Cleary?

A product of West Brom's youth academy, the 19-year-old Cleary has been a regular with the U18s and U21s in recent seasons, notching 29 goals and four assists in just 32 appearances for the U18s.

After smashing in 18 goals in just 14 U18 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, it was only natural that he would be moved up an age group, something which he certainly hasn't struggled with, as he boasts 16 strikes in just 12 Premier League 2 outings, which represents a stunning record of 1.33 goals-per-game.

Cleary was rewarded with his first senior appearances in 2022/23 but mustered just 55 minutes of Championship action, which seems surprising when you consider the struggles of Karlan Grant and Brandon Thomas-Asante, coupled with the injury struggles of Daryl Dike.

The USA international is expected to miss around nine months with an achilles tendon injury picked up last month, which could open the door for Cleary to become a regular next season.

Steve Bruce was full of praise for the teenage striker earlier in the campaign, with quotes that may well remind Baggies fans of their former loan star, Romelu Lukaku.

The former boss said: "He's just a natural finisher, which certainly helps, so when he comes up he catches your eye because he smashes it in the goal, which is nice to see."

Lukaku hit 17 goals in 35 Premier League games for West Brom in the 2012/13 Premier League campaign and few have come close to matching that tally in the years since, with only Dwight Gayle and Grant eclipsing that total in the Championship.

In the mould of the Belgian, Cleary is a physical striker with an eye for goal and if he is given regular first-team opportunities by Corberan next season, there seems no reason why he couldn't emulate their former loanee's performances at the Hawthorns given his exceptional goalscoring record in the academy.

Scotland's next World Cup win can't take another 21 games – Cannon

Malcolm Cannon, chief executive of Cricket Scotland, says that greater context of cricket including a recently proposed 13-team ODI league will enhance Scotland’s competitiveness on the global stage

Peter Della Penna12-Aug-20163:59

New Zealand are a role model for us in how to develop the game – Cannon

Malcolm Cannon, chief executive of Cricket Scotland, says that greater context in cricket, including a recently proposed 13-team ODI league, will enhance Scotland’s competitiveness on the global stage. He says that his administration remains focused on trying to secure more of their own fixtures in the event that the proposal does not gain ratification.”I think all the proposals that have come from the ICC in terms of their contextualising cricket, their proposals around ODI leagues and even their proposals around multi-day cricket are still very much in the melting pot,” Cannon told ESPNcricinfo in a recent interview. “No decisions were made, lots of discussions were had and what I would say is that it’s all very positive noise. It’s all very encouraging in terms of them recognising the need for change.”As regards to Scotland’s opportunity to become that 13th team on a proposed 13-nation ODI league, we would like to think that we’re in the vanguard, that we’re in with a very strong case and a strong opportunity but I don’t think we can take anything for granted. We’ve got to still continue to perform, to aim towards our qualification for various tournaments over the next few years as if this isn’t going to happen and then hope that it does.”Scotland wrapped up their rain-affected four-day Intercontinental Cup match against UAE on Friday and will play two WCL Championship ODIs on August 14 and 16 in Edinburgh. Apart from these fixtures, which were guaranteed as part of the I-Cup and WCL Championship calendar, Scotland’s summer slate featured two ODIs last month against Afghanistan – their first home ODIs in more than two years – with two more ODIs in September against Hong Kong. Though the home ODI fixture list is more than they had in 2015, it’s still not ideal.”It’s difficult,” Cannon said. “If you look at our summer this year, we’ve got six days of one-day cricket and a four-day I-Cup on home soil and that’s it. Is that enough? No. However, that’s life. We need to accept that it’s life for this year and make sure that next year and the following years we have a fuller fixture list.”In order to do that, we do need some cooperation from both the ICC, in terms of contextualising cricket, which is the dream, or with other nations recognising that Scotland are viable opposition and that we are credible and that we can compete on level terms with other nations, and then finding opportunities, because the Future Tours Programme has not many windows of opportunity. So we need to shoehorn ourselves into that in the future and then make sure that two, three, four years out, we are included in that fixture list because it is quite a long-term game.”While Scotland used to receive visits in the past from Full Members touring England – Australia and Pakistan both played ODIs in Edinburgh in 2013 – that pipeline has dried up in recent years with that regional Full Member interest shifting towards Ireland. After two ODIs earlier this summer against Sri Lanka, Ireland has two more scheduled this month against Pakistan while they have already announced home fixtures next summer against New Zealand, Bangladesh and West Indies, and a maiden ODI tour of England. The last time Scotland played a Full Member at home was against England in 2014 and as of now nothing is on tap for 2017. Cannon points to Ireland and Afghanistan’s place on the ODI rankings table for 2019 World Cup qualification as a mitigating factor and says those two countries have merited their opportunities through good performances.”I think we all recognise that Ireland and Afghanistan deserve their elevated status,” Cannon said. “They played very well two or three years ago and outplayed the rest of us. Wherever you draw a line in terms of additional funding, there’s always those just below the line who will feel hard done by or feel they deserve recognition as well. I don’t think that’s what this is about and I think the ICC have some method behind their funding model at the moment which I think will be borne out in time.”Malcolm Cannon has urged the side for a better performance in world events like the World Cup and the World T20•International Cricket Council

How long that method takes to come to fruition requires a high level of patience, especially for the players. The frustration has been evident for Scotland’s players who are eager to test themselves and improve as well. Though Ireland and Afghanistan may deserve their opportunities, the fact that Scotland and three other ODI Associates are not part of the ODI rankings table is hampering their ability to negotiate for games with Full Members.”I think there’s a lot to be said that the elevation in status has exacerbated the problem,” Cannon said. “Preston [Mommsen]’s quotes and press conferences in India were supported not only by the rest of the Scottish contingent but many other nations there. It’s a frustration but it’s life. We need to make it work. We need to make sure that we do compete when we have the opportunity so that we’re seen… as viable opposition for anyone including Full Members.”Regardless of whatever external opportunities may come forth from the ICC or elsewhere, Cannon says that the Scotland cricket community needs to focus on growing stronger from within. Specifically, he repeatedly spoke about “raising the noise levels” in Scottish cricket to get people excited about what does exist rather than dwell upon what is missing.”Scotland is certainly ranked a lot higher and recognised as a greater force than I appreciated before I joined Cricket Scotland,” says Cannon, who took up the role last September. “I think that’s been one of the biggest lessons is I don’t believe that the Scottish public and in particular the Scottish sporting public, recognise how powerful Scottish cricket is. I think we’ve got 230 years of history. We’ve got a great base in terms of our club structure and development pathways and I think we’ve got a right to perform on the world stage and we’ve got to accept these opportunities and make our name known not only on the world stage and with other international teams but in particular with our fans at home in Scotland.””We need to recognise that this is a Scottish sport. It’s as Scottish a sport as football is and we need to make sure that the Scottish public recognise that and get behind it. That means not only Scottish public but corporate Scotland as well and I think if we can become more self-sustaining, self-reliant, then I think that’s another reason that our other funders – the Scottish government and the ICC – will look upon us favourably.”Streamlining the administration of Cricket Scotland has been a key task in Cannon’s first year in the job. He says good governance is a pivotal factor in any group’s ability to recruit and sustain both players to participate in development programmes as well as the sponsors to fund them, something that will be needed if Scotland are to achieve the organisation’s strategic target to be a top-12 ODI team in both men’s and women’s cricket by 2019. Part of that is ensuring Scotland’s next success at an ICC tournament doesn’t take as long as their maiden victory took – 21 games dating back to the 1999 World Cup – against Hong Kong at the ICC World T20 in March.”I think we’ve had our days in the sun, 21 opportunities on the world stage for causing an upset if you like and never having taken one until this March in India, I think doesn’t do us credit,” Cannon said. “We must make sure that the next win on a global stage is not another 21 games from now.”

Tottenham: Spurs Enter Pole Position For "Exceptional" Signing

Tottenham Hotspur have entered pole position to bring Brentford goalkeeper David Raya to Spurs this summer, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Who could Spurs sign this summer?

Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy currently have a plethora of issue to solve, namely the pursuit of a new manager to replace the departed Antonio Conte, with their lack of a sporting director also needing to be addressed.

On top of the aforementioned tasks, the north Londoners also need to commence transfer planning for the upcoming summer window, with the Premier League season drawing to a close this afternoon.

Long-term number one and faithful club servant Hugo Lloris has been tipped to potentially leave this summer, with jaw-dropping offers reportedly coming from Saudi Arabia for his services.

Finding a replacement for the Frenchman is imperative, and Spurs have been linked with a few top goalkeepers like Andre Onana and even Jan Oblak in recent months.

Another name to have been mentioned is Raya as the Lilywhites allegedly identify the Spaniard for their list of potential Lloris successors.

David-Raya

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Rudy Galetti has an update on the matter, and it seemingly comes as a promising bit of news for Spurs supporters.

The Italian transfer reporter claims Tottenham are in pole position for him, with Levy and co "leading the race" for Raya's signature. Galetti adds that he is almost certain to depart next month.

"At the moment, we can say Spurs are leading the race for the Spanish goalkeeper," explained the reporter.

"He's considered one of the main targets to replace Lloris, who unless a sensational twist, will say goodbye in June. As for the coach situation, there will be concrete developments only when the new director has been chosen."

Who is David Raya?

The 27-year-old has been a key fixture and mainstay in Thomas Frank's Brentford side, playing more league minutes than any of his teammates and ranking among their top five best performers per 90 (WhoScored).

Raya's contract also expires in 2024, making him an attractive option for top clubs given Brentford have limited time to sell him on for a decent price.

The former Blackburn Rovers star has also been praised for his distribution by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and revered by members of the media, with journalist Sam Dean calling him "exceptional".

If Spurs can tempt him to N17, Raya could well be a brilliant stand-in for Lloris, though he'll have big shoes to fill.

Chelsea Trying To Fend Off Competition To Sign £52m Ace

Chelsea are 'in the race' to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte as Mauricio Pochettino aims to bolster his midfield ranks, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest transfer news involving Manuel Ugarte?

According to Football Insider, Chelsea manager Pochettino is said to have had a phone conversation with Ugarte in a bid to try and convince the midfielder to pitch up at Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Blues are trying to construct a structured deal that will match his release clause of £52 million and the 22-year-old is reportedly keen to test himself in the Premier League.

As per Record via The Daily Mail, Paris Saint-Germain also want to sign Ugarte and have offered a significantly larger financial package to the Uruguay international as they endeavour to entice the midfielder to Le Parc des Princes.

PSG are believed to be offering Ugarte £2.5 million (€3 million) to join the Ligue 1 giants. The outlet also claims that in Chelsea's bid, youngster David Datro Fofana moving to Sporting Lisbon on loan has also been floated by Blues' chiefs.

It has now been claimed that Chelsea are closing in on signing him, but it remains to be seen as to whether this is correct.

Chelsea are set for something of a midfield revamp in the off-season and Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic all look to be in negotiations regarding potential moves away from SW6.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that it will be left up to Ugarte over whether he wants to join Chelsea or PSG in the summer.

Jacobs told FFC: "It's quite a fluid situation because it just depends on what the player ultimately wants, assuming both clubs are able to agree a package and a structure with Sporting. There are still some legs on this story, but it is fair to say that both PSG and Chelsea at the time of recording are in the race for Ugarte."

Would Manuel Ugarte be a good addition to Chelsea's midfield?

Ugarte would add some youthful energy and bite to Chelsea's engine room and would be a major asset under Pochettino if the Argentinian is able to convince him to join the Blues.

Across 2022/23, Ugarte has made 47 appearances in all competitions for Sporting Lisbon, registering one assist, as per Transfermarkt.

sporting-cp-manuel-ugarte-man-united-transfers

The 22-year-old is also extremely reliable in possession and has managed to record a pass success rate of 91.8% in the Primeira Liga this season, according to WhoScored.

FBRef also detail that Ugarte ranks well in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of tackling, managing to make an average of 4.63 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the first percentile for this metric.

Chelsea are undergoing something of a transition period at Stamford Bridge and Ugarte may be the ideal candidate to add some stability in midfield as Pochettino looks to build ahead for 2023/24.

MCCU scheme boosted by new sponsor

The MCC University (MCCU) scheme has received a significant boost with news that a sponsor has been found to cover previous cuts in funding

The MCC University (MCCU) scheme has received a significant boost with news that a sponsor has been found to cover previous cuts in funding. The MCC announced earlier this year that they were to cut their funding of the programme by around 50% (from over £550,000 a year to around £275,000 a year) from the start of 2017. With the ECB unwilling to make-up the shortfall, the long-term viability of the scheme had been in doubt. But now Deloitte, the accountancy and consultancy firm, have been secured on a two-year deal. While the search for more sponsors and longer term deals goes on, the centres can expect higher levels of funding than anticipated this year and less of a shortfall than feared next.Around 23% of current England-qualified cricketers involved in the first-class game developed in part through the MCCU scheme which has six centres in Oxford, Cambridge, Cardiff, Durham, Loughborough and Leeds-Bradford. Among the players to have graduated through the system are director of cricket for the England team, Andrew Strauss, Ireland captain William Porterfield, Surrey’s Zafar Ansari, former England spinner Monty Panesar, Kent’s Sam Billings and England Women’s captain, Heather Knight.Set-up by former England opener Graeme Fowler in 1996, the aim was to ensure young people did not have to choose between education and cricket. By providing them with good quality coaching and playing opportunities at the same time as allowing them to gain a further education, the scheme not only encourages some into sport who might otherwise be lost, but prepares those who do break into the professional for the life after their sporting retirement.Fowler has long argued that the ECB have a “duty of care” to fund the scheme, suggesting it helps avoid some of the pitfalls encountered by players as they look for opportunities once their on-field careers come to an end.”Not only does this scheme encourage more of the best and brightest players to pursue a career in the game,” Fowler told ESPNcricinfo in March, “but it honours the duty of care we should have to them at both ends of their career.”While the programme perhaps does not generate the coverage it deserves – it sometimes suffers for being judged on its short-term, on-field results rather than its long-term, off-field impact – a strong case could be mounted to suggest it offers, alongside the PCA’s personal development programme, one of the most positive developments in player welfare since the introduction of pensions and insurance policies. It receives no direct funding from the ECB.It easily represents the biggest outlay of funds made each year by the MCC on cricket projects. The MCC has, over the last decade, spent more than £6.5m on the project and, in addition to the six MCCU centres, includes the funding of the MCC Combined Universities side (which consists of cricketers unsigned by the first-class counties and has just enjoyed its best season in the 2nd XI Championship) and the Loughborough Women side.Fowler stood down from his post at Durham MCCU in 2015. He was concerned by changes to the programme which he saw as an emphasis shift away from the development of excellence and more towards community based initiatives.

West Ham: Journo drops early Conference League team news vs Fiorentina

Ahead of Wednesday’s UEFA Conference League Final between West Ham United and Fiorentina, early team news has begun filtering through on how David Moyes’ side will line up for the decider in Prague.

It’s a huge night for both West Ham and Fiorentina.

The London side are looking for their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1980, while the Italians have not won a major trophy since their Italian Cup triumph in 2001 and their last European trophy was all the way back in 1961.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio expects Moyes to stick to their regular formation of 4-2-3-1 for Wednesday’s final, with no major surprise inclusions or omissions.

Who will be in the starting XI for West Ham in the Conference League Final?

The Hammers boss has implemented the 4-2-3-1 formation in 23 games this season, per FootballCritic. Wednesday’s final will likely see the formation played for the 24th time, according to DiMarzio.

declan-rice-west-ham-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-rodri-guardiola

Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is expected to start in goal for the Hammers.

The Frenchman has been West Ham’s No.1 in cup competitions this season, starting all 12 of the club’s Conference League fixtures this season. Per Transfermarkt, Areloa has conceded just seven goals in those games, keeping six clean sheets.

A central defensive pairing of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd is expected, with Aaron Cresswell at left-back and Vladimir Coufal at right-back.

Declan Rice will captain the side in what could be his final appearance for West Ham, with reports linking the England International with a summer move away from the London Stadium with Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich all interested in his services.

Rice will make be joined in midfield by Czech Republic international Tomas Soucek, who has been in only 33% of the Hammers' starting XIs in this season’s Europa Conference League.

Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma will start on the right and left flanks, while Brazil international Lucas Paqueta will start in the No.10 role behind striker Michail Antonio up front.

Full starting XI: Areola; Cresswell, Aguerd, Zouma, Coufal; Rice, Soucek; Benrahma, Paqueta, Bowen; Antonio.

Has Moyes got his team selection correct?

This is a West Ham side that picks itself for the final, and no inclusions or exclusions will be of huge surprise for Hammers fans.

Thilo Kehrer may consider himself unfortunate to miss out on a starting spot after a strong performance in the semi-final second leg away to AZ Alkmaar, but Moyes has instead opted for the experience of Coufal.

Indeed, the former Paris Saint-Germain ace registered the joint-third highest Sofascore rating in the West Ham team that day, which is hardly a surprise given he registered two clearances, two interceptions (joint-most) and one block, whilst Coufal, 30, could also have the home support behind him, being back in his home country – the Czech Republic.

With the injury to Gianluca Scammaca requiring surgery, Antonio is Moyes' best option up front.

With six goals in eight games in this competition, Antonio could have a big role to play for his side in tonight's final.
