Head, Lynn spearhead recast batting order

Steven Smith has backed the newcomers in his squad to fit right into the ODI playing XI

Chris Lynn and Travis Head will add major firepower to Australia’s ODI top order after the captain Steven Smith gave the pair licence to express themselves in the series opener against Pakistan at the Gabba on Friday.George Bailey and Aaron Finch have been discarded to make way for Lynn, the man of the moment in the concurrent Big Bash League, and Head, who in 2015 hammered a double century in a Matador Cup match for South Australia but has until now been marking time in a middle-order role. His elevation has also left room for Glenn Maxwell’s return to the team, with Usman Khawaja is the man missing out on the XI for the Brisbane fixture. Smith said he wanted to give Lynn in particular plenty of freedom to use his power game on the international stage – within reason.”He’s got a licence to play the way he wants to play,” Smith said. “Fifty overs is a long time so you’ve also got be a bit smarter with the way you play, but he’s got some freedom to go out and play nice and positively.”He’s been a bit stiff and sore in the last couple of days but he’s confident he’ll be able to play and do well. He’s been in red-hot form and hopefully he can bring that to the international stage. I’ve watched him in the nets in the last couple of days and he’s hit the ball hard and well so hopefully he can do the same for us.”Head’s elevation is a strong indicator of how highly he is regarded by the national set-up, and he may yet follow the new commission up by being included in the squad for the Test tour of India, to be announced sometime after the Gabba match. Smith said Khawaja had missed out narrowly to an incumbent member of the side.”It was a tough call,” Smith said. “I think looking around the squad, Maxwell was in the last group and it was good to get him into the line-up. Travis played very well in the last series and we’ve seen him play very well at the top of the order in the Matador Cup so it’s given him an opportunity at the top and we’ve got plenty of power down the order. It’s a good opportunity for Travis, but unlucky for Usman.”Among the bowlers, Smith will have the beanpole debutant Billy Stanlake at his disposal alongside Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. In addition to his height, Stanlake can match the more experienced pair for pace, and also has the ability to swing the new ball. It is an intimidating combination.”I think he’s going to be the tallest player to play for Australia so it’s great having those kind of guys in the team,” Smith said. “He bowls with good pace and it looks like he’s got pretty good control as well. He should get bounce, he’s releasing the ball from high enough.”I’ve watched him pretty closely in the Big Bash. He’s an exciting prospect. Hopefully he can start his international career on a good note. It’s nice to have three guys who can get it up around 150kph – it’s never nice to face.”

Spurs Eyeing Romero Repeat In ‘Extraordinary’ £17m Talent

Tottenham Hotspur could unveil their new goalkeeper shortly after agreeing personal terms with Empoli titan Guglielmo Vicario, ending speculation over the club's pursuit of a new shot-stopper.

What's the latest on Guglielmo Vicario to Tottenham?

That's according to Fabrizio Romano, who has taken to Twitter to provide a series of updates on the situation, the latest of which claims that a €19m (£17m) official proposal is incoming after personal terms were agreed yesterday.

Signing on a five-year deal, Vicario would likely assume the No 1. role at the club after impressing in Serie A this year; Spurs 'keeper Hugo Lloris is expected to depart this summer and he is clearly viewed as the replacement.

The 26-year-old Italian has been favoured by the Lilywhites hierarchy despite also agreeing terms with Brentford's David Raya, deterred by the £40m asking price.

Should Tottenham sign Guglielmo Vicario?

The 35-year-old Lloris has been a stalwart for Tottenham since signing from Lyon for £12m in 2012, but having made four errors leading to goal this year – the most in the division – and with Tottenham shipping 63 strikes, change is understandably afoot.

And while Raya would have been an impressive appointment after starring with the high-flying Bees in the Premier League over the past several seasons, the shrewder route has been taken and could still bear fruit, with Vicario offering all the promise of a first-rate goalkeeper for years to come.

Tottenham transfer target Guglielmo Vicario in Serie A action.

Hailed as an "extraordinary" talent by revered compatriot Gianluigi Buffon, Vicario recorded an average Sofascore rating of 7.05 as Empoli finished 14th in Serie A, playing 31 matches, keeping seven clean sheets and making 97 saves at a rate of 69%.

As per FBref, the £18k-per-week star also ranks among the top 9% of positional peers throughout Europe's top five leagues over the past 12 months for touches per 90, which underscores his prowess as a ball-playing goalkeeper, something that could fit the philosophy of new Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou to a tee, having been lauded for bringing "a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play" by club chairman Daniel Levy.

It could replicate Spurs' recent success in bringing Cristian Romero over from Italian football, with the no-nonsense centre-back signing from Atalanta for £42m in 2021.

Despite the north London outfit's defensive woes, the Argentine World Cup champion has been hailed as a "Rolls-Royce" by Martin Keown and has earned his stripes through his tenacious grit, ranking among the top 5% of centre-halfs for tackles, the top 17% for successful take-ons and the top 20% for interceptions per 90.

On top of the assurance that a burgeoning goalkeeper would bring, Spurs could continue their trend of fortifying the ranks from Serie A with the signing of Vicario, and it is a transfer that must be concluded swiftly ahead of a campaign of paramount importance.

Taskin eager to make Test debut

Taskin Ahmed, 21, is likely to make his Test debut and lead a Bangladesh attack that, for the past eight years, has been the least-experienced department in the team

Another away Test series brings another fresh pace-bowling group in the Bangladesh line-up. Taskin Ahmed, 21, is likely to make his Test debut and lead an attack that, for the past eight years, has been the least-experienced department in the team.As at Wellington’s Basin Reserve where Taskin, Rubel Hossain, Subashis Roy and Kamrul Islam Rabbi gleefully bowled on a green surface next to the first Test pitch, they have regularly encountered friendly conditions in West Indies, Zimbabwe, England and on the previous tour of New Zealand. But apart from Robiul Islam in Zimbabwe in 2013, none could match their skills to the conditions on offer.Rubel has played the most during this period but never been penetrative enough, while Kamrul – who made his debut in the home series against England last year – and the uncapped Subashis have never played a Test abroad. The trend has been to pick rookies, who don’t get many opportunities in home Tests but offer promise in a season or two of first-class cricket. Once someone does well in challenging conditions at home, they are quickly brought up to the highest level and given the responsibility to use their skills in helpful conditions overseas. After spending much of Tuesday bowling on the centre pitches rather than the nets, Taskin could not help but smile when asked about his excitement at bowling on such a pitch on his Test debut.”The bowlers are very happy seeing the wicket,” Taskin said. “It is a rather green and hard surface. I am gearing up to bowl there. We have some good fast bowlers, and we have shown in the recent past that we can bowl well. If we can bowl to our potential, it will be a good game.”While Taskin’s excitement is reasonable, his inexperience in the longer format is a major concern, especially for someone who has broken down twice in the last three years. Only a few months ago, in October, Bangladesh’s coach, Chandika Hathurusingha , warned the selectors not to pick him in Tests. After chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that Taskin would be fast-tracked into the Test team in England, Hathurusingha responded: “Has he played any four-day cricket? So you think people can do magic straight away? No. They are humans. If you haven’t played four-day cricket in your entire life, standing four days on the field and bowling 15 overs is entirely new for him. I don’t want to destroy somebody’s career.”Khaled Mahmud, Bangladesh’s manager at the time and since inducted into the selection committee after it was revamped last year, had also backed Minhajul’s strategy. While Taskin’s pace has been more than useful for Bangladesh since his international debut in 2014, he played the last of his 10 first-class matches in 2013.But Taskin was not focusing on his lack of bowling volume, which he believes can be covered by the work he does in the nets, while preparing himself to play in the longer format.”I have had to work hard to come to the Test side,” he said. “The support staff and coaches at the BCB really helped me get to this stage. I trained in a specific programme, which included building my bowling workload in the last 18-24 months. I am in the Test squad because I have become fitter, and I don’t want to stop after just one game. I want to make a regular place in the team.”I am not too worried about bowling volume. I don’t think my lack of first-class matches will be a factor. I am only thinking of taking care of myself off the field, so that I can give my all on it. I have bowled 12-15 overs in the nets on many days, with the new and old ball. I am learning how to swing the red ball. I believe that I will become a better Test player with every game I play.”As a regular in shorter formats and given Rubel’s poor numbers despite being the most experienced pace bowler – he averages 75.90 and his last Test came in 2015 – Taskin would automatically be elevated as the leader of the bowling attack if he does play in Wellington. That too on his Test debut, and his first long-form game in nearly four years.

Spurs Eyeing Dream Romero Partner In "Flourishing" £26m Gem

Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign Wolfsburg's Dutch defender Micky van de Ven, with new manager Ange Postecoglou seeking assurances over the quality of his backline.

What's the latest on Micky van de Ven to Tottenham?

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims that Spurs have included Van de Ven "on their shortlist" alongside fellow German Bundesliga ace Edmond Tapsoba, with preliminary talks believed to have been conducted already.

With Premier League rivals Liverpool also interested in the left-sided central defender, who is valued at around €30m (£26m) by Wolfsburg, Spurs will need to provide an enticing package if they are to capture his signature.

Tottenham have compiled a list of names to consider for transfers this summer after failing to qualify for Europe this year, with the woes largely down to a dismal defence that shipped 63 goals in the top flight.

Should Tottenham sign Micky van de Ven?

While the pathos pervading from the recently-concluded season still lingers down the N17, the appointment of Postecoglou has been both an astute and suitable move, and there is every chance that a promising transfer window could plant the seeds for a memorable campaign.

But such fruitful endeavours will only rise to the fore with apt work on the defensive ranks, and Van de Ven's athleticism and exuberance could strengthen the framework at the back.

The "giant" has been praised for "flourishing" this season by journalist Ronan Murphy, and given he favours the left side of the central defence, he could be the perfect partner for Cristian Romero.

cristian-romero-tottenham-hotspur-manchester-united-ryan-mason

Ebbing and flowing like the tide with his displays this season, Spurs' £42m man concluded the 2022/23 league term with an average Sofascore rating of 6.97, playing 27 times and being praised as a "Rolls-Royce" by Martin Keown.

And given that the Argentinian 2022 World Cup winner ranks among the top 17% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons and the top 5% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, he clearly boasts the tenacity and aggressiveness to bully defences, and with a burgeoning star such as Van de Ven beside him, he could thrive.

Comparatively, the Dutchman ranks among the top 10% of centre-backs for progressive carries and the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90.

The 23-year-old is definitely unrefined but undoubtedly boasts a high ceiling that Spurs should snap up in a heartbeat, and by securing his signature, a dynamic new partnership could be born to rekindle the stability and strength of a leaky backline.

Increasing the standard of the defence can only lead to better results, and given what Romero has been able to produce in the midst of a poor defensive year for Spurs as a collective, a new partner as capable as Van de Ven may just give the Tottenham backline the lease of life it needs to prosper next season.

Liverpool Lead Way For £50m Monster, Imagine Him & Szoboszlai

Jurgen Klopp could be about to complete Liverpool's summer transfer splurge with a move for in-demand Southampton star Romeo Lavia.

What is the latest Liverpool transfer news?

That is according to The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, who told The Empire of the Kop Podcast that Liverpool are now leading clubs such as Chelsea and Arsenal for the teenage talent.

Despite his relative inexperience, having played just one season of Premier League football for relegated Southampton, Lavia is said to be valued in the region of £45m-£50m.

Liverpool have already moved to bring in midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this window, with the latter reportedly set to be officially announced on Sunday in a £60m transfer.

Is Romeo Lavia a good option for Liverpool?

Mac Allister and Szoboszlai are both expected to slot straight into Klopp's favoured starting line-up in what is a much-needed overhaul at Anfield, but it may well be that Lavia has just as big a part to play should he arrive.

Lavia showed his quality last season in an otherwise poor Southampton side, with his tenacious playing style highlighted by his nine yellow cards in the Premier League – three more than any of team-mate.

According to The Analyst, the former Manchester City product ranked in the top 12% of all midfielders across Europe's top five leagues last season for possession won, though he was in the bottom 21% for chances created.

That is almost in complete contrast to Szoboszlai, who was in the top 4% for chances created during his final season with RB Leipzig but in the bottom 45% for possession won.

Effectively, Lavia and Szoboszlai thrive in different areas, though both are of course very talented in their own right.

dominik-szoboszlai-liverpool-transfer-news-premier-league

Belgium international Lavia started 13 games as a defensive midfielder last season – as defined by WhoScored – and 13 games as a pure central midfielder. By contrast, 25 of Szoboszlai's starts last season came in central attacking midfield, while the rest were spread across numerous positions in the final third.

If Lavia brings some defensive steel and Szoboszlai some attacking threat, then Mac Allister is the glue that holds the team together and helps keep play ticking along – arguably the perfect balance for any midfield trio.

Described as an "absolute monster" by Independent Sport writer Benjy Nurick for his display against Man City in Southampton's 2-0 EFL Cup quarter-final win last season, Lavia has already shown he can more than hold his own against any opposition.

Should Liverpool be able to land him at the low end of Southampton's valuation, then signing those three midfield gems for a combined £140m may look very good business indeed a few years down the line.

BCCI representative Limaye stresses need for greater trust at ICC

Vikram Limaye, a member of the committee of administrators overseeing the BCCI, has said there is a need for greater trust between the Indian board, other member boards, and the ICC

Vikram Limaye, a member of the committee of administrators overseeing the BCCI, has said there is a need for greater trust between the Indian board, other member boards, and the ICC. Limaye, who represented the BCCI at the ICC Board meeting in Dubai last week, said it was important for boards to move forward collectively and not carry baggage from the past.”There is a lot of mistrust between the BCCI and the other members based on historical experiences and on how they feel they have been treated in the past,” Limaye told the . “I outlined my views to the ICC Board members that it is important to adopt a collaborative approach, rather than a confrontational approach, which is not in the interest of anybody: neither does it help Indian cricket nor world cricket.”Fortunately I don’t carry baggage of the past, I have no alignments, I am not here on a permanent basis, I am here to try and do what I have been asked to do. In that context, if I am to build some bridges and sort out some issues, I would do that.”The main sticking point for the BCCI at the meetings was the ICC’s push to approve in principle the new constitution and revenue distribution model: the Indian board stood to make significantly less under the new projections. The BCCI voted against the rollback of the Big Three model because Limaye, who was at the meeting, said he had insufficient time to take an “informed view of the said proposal.”Limaye, however, said the BCCI’s discussions on revenue sharing had to go beyond the context of maximising its revenue. “I think the revenue-sharing model has to be balanced on a broader framework,” he said. “There is a larger context in which discussions should be conducted and everybody feels fairly treated. That was the takeaway from the conversations I had when I was there.”He also felt it was the BCCI’s responsibility as a strong member to ensure that weaker nations had adequate resources to develop their cricket. “It’s in our (BCCI’s) interest to have stronger cricketing nations from a viewership perspective, revenue perspective and from any perspective,” he said.”I don’t think we could get the kind of revenues if we just kept playing against weaker countries, nobody would be interested in that. So it is important for us (BCCI) to play that role because of our stature in terms of not only as a good cricketing team, about also because of the sizeable influence we have on revenue from an India perspective.”When told how some members had found the Big Three model to be flawed and that they had claimed to be forced into the agreement, Limaye said he did not want to dwell on the past.”The good news, which I appreciate, is that there is no confusion in anybody’s mind, in fact they were vocal and appreciative of the fact that the BCCI is an important member and India does bring in a disproportionate share of revenue. But the issue is what kind of share should the BCCI get versus the other members. Being combative, confrontational is not going to be helpful.”I heard that all kinds of things were done to get a disproportionate share for India. But I don’t want to get into that history. When the BCCI conducted a meeting last year [SGM on February 19], they acknowledged that the BCCI should be willing for a lower share and gave the authority to the president and secretary to negotiate it.”There was also a view in that meeting that the BCCI should take a balanced view on the sharing of ICC revenue, but the number was never frozen. That meeting was attended by all BCCI members. One member dissented and all others agreed to it. There was an agreement that there has to be a more equitable distribution. I think this aspect has to be taken into context, which all countries are aware, now that Mr Manohar is the ICC Chairman.”While studying the draft constitution before it is put to vote in the next round of ICC board meetings in April, Limaye said he had to keep mind what the other countries would agree to. “They have agreed in principle to this proposal and revenue share. And again we know, if that is put to vote again, we have already seen what will happen.”That’s to be kept in mind, in order to ascertain the feasibility of getting anything substantially more than what has been passed in the meeting at Dubai. We [CoA] will also consider this so that there is input from us for the April meeting, input in the sense a conversation with ICC if we have a different view. Whether they choose to accept or view or nor is a separate matter.”

PSL aims to finalise foreign players list for Lahore

With the Punjab government giving a public go-ahead to the Pakistan Super League final taking place in Lahore, the tournament organisers have one last problem to solve

Osman Samiuddin27-Feb-2017

Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators are expected to face the most difficulty with the PSL final set to be played in Lahore•PCB/PSL

With only three matches left in the UAE, the Pakistan Super League and its franchises are beginning the process of figuring out which foreign players will travel to Lahore, where the final is scheduled for March 5.On Sunday evening in Dubai, Karachi Kings became the last team to qualify for the play-offs. They begin on Tuesday in Sharjah, with Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, the two teams that finished top, playing each other. Looming over the games, though, is the question of who from the foreign contingents of the four teams is ready to travel to Lahore. The PSL management is expected to further brief the overseas players before the play-offs begin and the primary aim remains to try and convince as many of them as possible to make the trip. However, preparations are also underway to create a nominated pool of foreign players willing to travel in case the finalists’ current roster pulls out.On Monday, the Punjab government finally gave a public go-ahead to the staging of the final in Lahore. In theory, that ends the uncertainty of recent days caused by a wave of terrorist attacks across Pakistan that have claimed over 100 lives, including a suicide attack in Lahore two weeks ago when 13 people were killed. There was another blast in the city last Thursday, when at least seven people perished, heightening nerves and casting fresh doubt on the sense of bringing the final to Lahore. Though reports initially said it was a bomb, the government has since claimed it to be the result of a gas leak from a cooking cylinder.Senior league officials have worried over the fluidity of the situation, and had been waiting for a definitive go-ahead from government authorities. With that now in hand, the situation of the foreign players needs resolution. Najam Sethi, the PSL chief who was in Pakistan on Monday, said: “I will be going back to Dubai now and once the finalists are confirmed I will again talk to the franchise owners and foreign players. We have also prepared a back up list of foreign players in case the overseas signings of the finalist teams refuse to come to Lahore. “Kumar Sangakkara, who was in the team bus which was attacked in Lahore eight years ago, is almost certain not to travel to the city again•PCB/PSL

Of the four remaining teams, Peshawar are the most confident their foreign contingent will go to Lahore should they reach the final. No player, however, has come outright and said so yet. And though no official word has come from Islamabad United, it is believed neither Brad Haddin nor Shane Watson will stay on.The two teams who might face greatest difficulties are Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings. Kevin Pietersen, of the former, will almost certainly not travel and Tymal Mills is also unlikely. Others such as Luke Wright and Rilee Roussow, who were considering making the trip, are said to have reassessed after the recent spate of attacks.Officially Karachi say their players will make a decision once the team’s fate is clear. Until then, it is said, their players do not want to “jinx” their chances of getting to the final by talking about it.It is almost inconceivable that Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, two players who were in the team bus in Lahore when it was attacked eight years ago, will travel. They have told officials that they cannot take the decision alone and have to consult with their families. And the call they make could potentially have an impact on what Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard do as well.One-off payments, ranging from USD 10,000 – 50,000, are being offered to foreign players should they agree to play in Lahore. That, as one foreign player considering taking part in the final pointed out, brings its own complications. “What is the difference in me playing in Lahore under a security threat and a Pakistani player doing so?” he said. “In any attack both are at risk. And physios and masseuses? A life is a life, mine or a Pakistani player’s.”In case the teams end up severely shorthanded, a pool of nominated foreign players could be roped in. The list, initially of 54 names, has now grown to above 60 and is said to be composed of those who were not picked in the draft last October as well as additional names from outside the draft, who are willing to travel to Pakistan. Each franchise will nominate five to six players from the long list and hand it to the PSL, who hope that ultimately, accounting for common names that appear in multiple lists, they have a shortlist of 12 to 15 waiting on standby to participate in the final.
