Liverpool Could Sign Gvardiol 2.0 In £39m Beast

Liverpool are putting together a formal transfer offer for a new defender according to one reporter…

Who are Liverpool trying to sign?

That's according to one Portuguese journalist, who has seemingly confirmed that Jurgen Klopp's side are indeed in pursuit of a new defender before the window closes.

That happens to be Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio and the Reds are prepared to meet his €45m (£39m) release clause.

Liverpool have been interested in Inacio all year, reportedly sending scouts to watch the defender in action in February, and could now swoop given the importance of signing a left-sided centre-back.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The dynamic ace is also on Premier League high-fliers Newcastle United's radar, with manager Eddie Howe recently expressing his desire to make one more signing this summer.

How good is Goncalo Inacio?

The 6 foot 1 defender has played his entire career with Sporting Lisbon thus far, scoring 11 goals and supplying eight assists from 123 outings and winning the 2020/21 Liga Portugal and two Portuguese League Cup trophies.

Hailed as "complete" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the two-cap international looks to offer the quintessential mould of a modern-day defender destined for a date with an outfit targetting silverware on a regular basis, and Liverpool will hope their confluence of interests will tempt Inacio into making the move to Merseyside.

Aside from the fact that he is left-footed, which is, admittedly, crucial to the Reds' pursuit, he is one of the most promising defenders globally, and that is not an overstatement – Inacio boasts a ball-playing prowess unmatched by most and a positional fluidity that allows his dynamic qualities to shine.

goncalo-inacio-transfer-gossip-sporting-lisbon-arsenal-jurrien-timber-edu-arteta

BBC Sports' Raj Chohan detailed exactly why he would thrive for the Anfield side, his skills both desirable for a Klopp system and hinting at chemistry with Liverpool's current options.

He said on Twitter: "Gonçalo Inácio is the perfect counter-weight to Konaté. Inacio-VVD-Konaté: Build-up conductor. Leader/aerial dominator/switches of play. Immense recovery speed & coverage of space."

As per FBref, Inacio ranks among the top 6% of centre-backs across Men's Next Eight divisions – below the top European five – for pass completion, the top 1% for assists, the top 1% for progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90.

Inacio would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool, and one which would restore the cohesion and toughness of the defence, creating a domino effect of sorts to enhance the entirety of the squad and create a pretty good chance of returning to the former vigour.

It could also be an acquisition to rival that of Manchester City's £78m summer swoop for Josko Gvardiol, formerly of RB Leipzig, with the Croatian colossus, also aged 21, renowned as one of football's most prodigious central defenders and holding an expectation that he will soar right to the very top.

RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Lauded as a "Rolls-Royce" by journalist Zach Lowy, Gvardiol is also left-footed and ranks among the top 10% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues for goals, the top 1% for passes attempted, the top 19% for progressive passes and progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90.

Clearly, as Inacio is, he is a progressive and elegant ball-playing defender.

The Croat will now enter a Citizen side that is searching for an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League title having also just completed a sensational European treble last term, and it will indeed take a herculean effort to supersede such a remarkable squad.

Inacio should not shoulder such a heavy burden upon his potential arrival, but by receiving tactful care from Klopp and co in easing him into English football, he could grow into one of the Premier League's finest players and contribute to a Liverpool revival that those affiliated hope will yield silver-laden success.

Somerset confirm Hurry appointment

Andy Hurry has been rushed back to Taunton as Somerset’s director of cricket after the removal of Matthew Maynard

Somerset have confirmed that Andy Hurry will return to the club as director of cricket following the departure of Matthew Maynard. The news, which was first signalled in ESPNcricinfo, also sees Jason Kerr promoted from assistant and bowling coach to become Somerset’s new head coach.Hurry’s return offers Somerset a sense of stability and unity after a difficult season in which they only avoided relegation on the final day of the season and released a clutch of players including the limited-overs captain Jim Allenby.Indeed, even now they cannot entirely rest easy: Middlesex, who were relegated instead, have lodged an official protest with the ECB about an overrate sanction during a match at The Oval which ended prematurely for safety reasons when a crossbow bolt was fired onto the outfield.ECB clear ‘below average’ pitch

Somerset have avoided any further action over the pitch produced for the final Championship match of the season against Middlesex which was rated “below average”.
The judgement, by Cricket Liaison Officer Wayne Noon, prompted further investigation by the ECB but the surface was cleared on Monday.
Somerset saved their Division One status with victory in the match which was dominated by spin.
However, the club will remain under notice and further action could be taken if another surface is rated “below average” next season. And they are not 100% secure of their position until the outcome of Middlesex’s appeal against their slow over-rate is decided for the match ended by the crossbow incident at The Oval.

Hurry spent 13 years at Somerset before he left in 2014 to become head coach of the ECB’s Player Development Programme. He originally joined Somerset in 2001 and went on to become head coach before taking the position of director of high performance for a brief period at the end of the 2013 season. In his time as head coach he oversaw Somerset’s most successful period since the Glory Years in the late 1970s and early 80s, as he led them to within a whisker of the County Championship and to several white-ball finals.Somerset CEO Lee Cooper, who has undertaken a comprehensive review of the club’s structure since his appointment during the summer, said: “Andy Hurry enjoyed considerable success during his time with Somerset and since then he has gone on to gain extensive and valuable experience working with the ECB and the Young Lions Programme. He is held in extremely high regard by both the ECB and our playing staff.”Jason Kerr has fulfilled a number of roles since a shoulder injury brought his seam-bowling career to a premature end in 2002 and has been actively involved with the First XI for over a decade.Andy Hurry•Getty Images

Cooper said: “Jason’s knowledge of the club and the unique culture that surrounds it is second to none. He has also played a major role in the development of our exciting young players who are now breaking in to the first XI.”Hurry has been unable to resist the lure of a return to the south-west. He said: “Somerset will always hold a very special place in my heart,” he said. “We came so close to winning silverware when I was here before and there is therefore some unfinished business. It is one of the most respected clubs in the world and it feels very much like I’m coming home.”I have relished my three years with the ECB and Young Lions and through the opportunities the programme has provided me, I have grown my experience and knowledge significantly”

Shaun Marsh 88 hands Western Australia second win

A round-up of the third day’s action at the JLT One-Day Cup

Shaun Marsh maintained his sublime start to the domestic limited overs competition as Western Australia eased past Victoria by 38 runs at the WACA Ground in Perth.Peter Siddle played his first competitive match since suffering a back injury in last November’s Perth Test against South Africa, and claimed two top order wickets in a promising return. But it was Marsh who had the biggest say in proceedings, gliding to 88 to set a platform for the Warriors’ middle order to take advantage of in raising a total of 283.Cameron Bancroft, the captain Mitchell Marsh and Jon Well all played helpful supporting roles, before WA’s bowling attack contributed evenly to restrict the Bushrangers in their chase.Sab Gotch and the former WA opening batsman Marcus Harris both made useful scores, but the steady loss of wickets through the middle of the innings kept the Warriors ahead of the game, leaving too much for Siddle and the rest of the bowlers to do, much as he tried to close the deficit. The result leaves WA unbeaten after their first two home games of the tournament.

Five wickets for Joe Mennie and a century to Tom Cooper took South Australia to an 83-run caning of Queensland in the domestic limited-overs match at Allan Border Field. The Redbacks, who had lost their opening fixture against the Cricket Australia XI, struck early with the new ball against the Test batsmen Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw to leave the Bulls to 4 for 44, from which point the hosts never looked likely to threaten South Australia’s middling total of 240.Cooper’s innings formed the spine of the Redbacks’ batting, after they too lost early wickets upon being sent in to bat by Khawaja. The visitors were a decidedly wobbly 5 for 99 before Cooper took control of proceedings, aided by a patient Cameron Valente who had made a hundred in the opening match.Mennie contributed a quickfire 14 with the bat before going to work with the ball, claiming consistent wickets through the middle of the Queensland innings to bundle them out with a full 13 overs to spare. The win ensured South Australia had one win and one loss after two games of the tournament.

Fulham: "Match-Winner" Eyeing Move To Craven Cottage

BBC journalist Shamoon Hafez has shared an update on former Wolves and Barcelona winger Adama Traore's potential move to Fulham.

Who will Fulham sign?

Manager Marco Silva has seen two major signings come through the door this summer, with defender Calvin Bassey and striker Raul Jimenez joining the club this summer.

Bassey, after a standout season with Ajax in the Eredivisie last term, signed for around £18.2 million while Jimenez opted to swap Wolves for west London.

However, Fulham's manager has publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the club's transfer business overall, candidly admitting they still need to strengthen in a number of key areas.

Silva says they're short on full-backs and options out wide, and with the new season starting today with a trip away to Everton, Fulham are running out of time to reinforce their squad.

“Unfortunately, we need many still. We have some important players injured,” he said last week.

“I hope they can come sooner. We have just two full backs, we need a midfielder too and we have just two wingers so we need another two wingers.

“We have completed our central defenders. I needed these players 15 days or 20 days ago, not now.”

Ex-Fulham transfer target Fred has completed a move to Turkey, dealing a blow to their hopes of signing a midfielder before deadline day, but they have been linked with many wide players recently.

The likes of Everton winger Demarai Gray and Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi stand out as just some of the high profile names, with ex-Wolves star Traore now firmly on their radar.

That is according to The BBC and Hafez, who claim Traore is now considering an offer to join Fulham. The 27-year-old, who spent a portion of 2021/2022 on loan at Barca, left Wolves upon the expiry of his contract in June.

Traore is now a free agent and readily-available for hire, but Fulham are not the only competitors for a Bosman deal, as clubs in Saudi Arabia are also circling.

How good is Adama Traore?

Wolverhampton Wanderers' former winger Adama Traore.

The winger, who former Spurs boss Antonio Conte was once desperate to sign for Tottenham, could now move to Fulham for nothing.

Traore was once highly sought-after with some reports claiming Wolves valued him at around £50 million. The attacker, during his arguably best season at Molineux, was a seriously exciting dribbler.

According to WhoScored, Traore averaged a very impressive five successful take-ons per 90 in the final third over 2019/2020 – a season which also saw him bag four goals and nine assists.

These numbers indicate there is a real player to be had, when Traore is at his best, with former Leeds striker Noel Whelan calling him a "match-winner" to Football Insider.

"When you’re talking about signing game-changers and match-winners from the bench, wow, Traore is the perfect fit,” said Whelan.

He can produce something from nothing. That’s the excitement about him – the unknown, the power, the way he can drive past players and brush them off.

“He’s proven in the last few years now that he’s not just a one-trick pony. There never used to be any end product to his game, but now he’s improved that. He picks the best pass a lot more often now."

United Interest In World Cup Winner "Very Concrete"

Manchester United's latest "priority" target "wants to go" to Old Trafford this summer, and with the club happy with his £82,000-a-week wages, the possibility of a deal is "very concrete", per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United transfer news – what is the latest?

It's been an excellent summer for the United faithful so far this year.

The club have spent big yet again in a bid to back manager Erik ten Hag in his second year in charge of the team, and in doing so, they have seriously improved the squad.

First through the door was Chelsea star and former fan favourite Mason Mount, who joined the club in a deal worth £55m after a protracted transfer saga.

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

Following the England international was Inter Milan's highly-rated Cameroon international Andre Onana. The keeper joined from the Champions League runners-up in a deal worth £47m, coming straight in as the club's new number one after the departure of David de Gea.

The latest big signing to make their way to the Theatre of Dreams was Danish wonderkid Rasmus Hojlund, who left Serie A side Atalanta for the Premier League in a deal worth £72m.

While that is already a pretty good summer's worth of incomings, it looks like the Red Devils want more, specifically in defence, as it seems increasingly likely that former captain Harry Maguire is on his way to West Ham United this summer.

The defender most heavily touted for a move to United recently has been Bayern Munich star and World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard.

And according to transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, the player is incredibly keen to make the move before the window shuts and has already informed the Bavarians of his intentions.

He explained the situation live on The United Stand's YouTube channel, saying:

"The Pavard deal is something very concrete in terms of the player's side at the moment because I am hearing that the player is really keen on joining Manchester United. He wants to get this opportunity to go to the Premier League to try new a chance; he knows also that Erik ten Hag is a big fan of his ability to play in different positions because Pavard can help as a full-back and not just as a centre-back and this is important for United to have a defensive full-back like Pavard into the squad, it could help in some crucial moments in the season.

"So the feedback between Pavard and United is excellent. The player wants to go, and also, Man United feel the conditions of the salary are correct. So, the agreement on personal terms is not a problem at all; it's about Bayern now.

"Man United approached Bayern Friday last week, and from Bayern, they were not really keen on the transfer of Benjamin Pavard because they still want to keep him. He's an important player for Tuchel. But, from what I am hearing during the weekend and even today [Monday], and I think this will continue, Pavard has been really clear with Bayern, with the board, with the manager he wants to go. He's not going to sign a new contract, his contract expires in summer 2024 and is not extending, and so he believes for both sides, player and for the club [this] is the best way to find a solution and to go to Man United.

"So Pavard is pushing for the move, let's see what happens between United and bayern. But for sure, this is the priority at the moment for Man United."

How old is Benjamin Pavard?

Born March 28th 1996, in Maubeuge, France, Pavard is 27 years old and has spent the last four and half seasons playing for Bayern and, unsurprisingly, winning the league every single year, as well as picking up the Champions League trophy in the summer of 2020.

He has been a brilliant player for the Bavarians over those four-and-a-half years, and it's easy to see why ten Hag is so keen to bring him to Old Trafford this summer.

In his 27 starts for the Bavarians last season, he found the back of the net on four occasions, provided one assist, took 1.1 shots per game, maintained a passing accuracy of 89.8%, won 2.1 aerials duals a game and picked up two Man-of-the-Match awards along the way, all while averaging a match rating of 7.17, per WhoScored.

benjamin-pavard-transfer-news-premier-league-man-united

His underlying numbers are also seriously impressive and suggest that the step-up to the Premier League shouldn't have too significant an impact on his output.

According to FBref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, the £82,000-a-week man sits in the top 1% for attempted passes and progressive passes, the top 2% for total shots, expected assists and progressive passes received, the top 3% for non-penalty goals and shot-creating actions, and the top 4% for touches in the oppositions penalty area and non-penalty expected goals, all per 90.

Described as a "top team player" by manager Thomas Tuchel, if United can get this deal over the line, it would significantly improve the team both at full-back and centre-back and would represent brilliant business.
