Arsenal: Another star after Aaron Ramsdale now looks finished under Arteta

We are just five games into the new Premier League season but we are already starting to see a new side to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard has always been a rather serious character, one who reached deep into the text book of Pep Guardiola's teachings.

Yet, the 2023/24 campaign has seen him morph into his professor more than ever. Arteta's press conference ramblings have been interesting and at times sarcastic, as if to mimic the great Pep.

We already know that Arteta has developed a similar philosophy on the pitch and in a bid to go toe to toe with Manchester City, is trying to build a squad full of options and versatility.

Oleksandr Zinchenko's switch from the Etihad to the Emirates was a pivotal part in the club's ongoing project. An attacking midfielder by trade, the Ukranian was moved to a left-back position by Guardiola and now plays the role of an inverted full-back to perfection.

Such a tactical ploy may well have been pioneered by Johan Cruyff all those years ago, but it has been brought back by the Spanish coach who has seen his ideas now replicated all throughout Europe.

Yet, Arteta may be on the verge of a philosophy never seen in football, one that challenges the perception of a role on the pitch that only ever had one player in it; the goalkeeping department.

Aaron Ramsdale quickly dislodged Bernd Leno as the club's number 1 early into Arteta's reign but now as things get serious, the Englishman finds himself at a crossroads after being dropped for David Raya on Sunday.

Why did Raya start against Everton?

There had been murmurings prior to the international break that Arteta was pondering a change between the sticks.

Raya, signed rather surprisingly on loan from Brentford during the summer window, had impressed in training and had been patiently waiting for his moment in the sun.

Displacing Ramsdale was going to be no easy task. This is a player hailed for his world-class saving abilities in the past. His double stop to deny Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate at Anfield last term was notably astonishing.

Indeed, very few can question the Englishman's shot-stopping. Very few could question his ability to distribute play from the back. However, his playful character and energy is hardly a calming influence.

This is where Raya excelled against Everton. He wasn't called upon much during his debut for the Gunners, cooly going under the radar instead on his way to a clean sheet.

During the clash, he completed an immense 94% of his passes, per Sofascore. That might not look too impressive for a player charged with playing the ball a couple of feet each time to his backline. Yet, when you consider Ramsdale's average pass completion rate of 77% this term and you get a feeling for why Arteta rates his new signing so highly.

What was also impressive was Raya's two high claims. Ramsdale is no mug inside the penalty area but his ability to come out from a cross often looks a little haphazard. The England star almost looks unsure of his positioning in those moments and opts to punch away. The fact he has only made one high claim in his four outings to date speaks volumes.

With the Brentford loanee, there appears to be no such problems in that regard. He is calm, dominating and oozes class. Of course, there will be bigger tests to come for Raya, potentially starting in the Champions League and the north London derby next Sunday, should he play but the initial signs are very promising.

What has Arteta said about Raya and Ramsdale?

The decision to start with Raya in goal against the Toffees sparked plenty of debate but as far as Arteta is concerned, he has always wanted two players in that position.

Speaking to Sky Sports prior to the game, he noted: "There will be rotations. I mentioned that we wanted to build a squad with two quality players in each position.

“We have got that now. And to maximise that they’ve to play games."

However, once the game was said and done, the Gunners head coach even hinted that he could be tempted to switch goalkeepers mid-game depending on the situation. Such a philosophy has never been seen in the game, with a clear number 1 always undisputed. Now, though, perceptions are changing.

Speaking at full-time, he commented: "I only have been three and a half years in the job and I have few regrets. One of them was that on two occasions I felt after 60 minutes and after 85 minutes, in two games in this period, to change the keeper at that moment and I didn’t do it. I didn’t have the courage to do it and I was so unhappy.

"Tell me why not do it. Why not. We have all the qualities in another goalkeeper to do something, something is happening and you want to change momentum. Do it. it is a regret that I had. And now my feeling is to get everyone engaged and in the team, they have to play regardless of the competition. That is my message."

if you take Arteta's comments at face value then both 'keepers will get their opportunities this term. Only time will tell.

Ramsdale isn't the only player to have been given what looks like a cold shoulder, though. Gabriel Martinelli was given a substantial period of time on the bench before he returned to the side following injury in 2021/22 while Emile Smith Rowe is going through a tough time at the moment too.

Why is Smith Rowe not playing?

Arteta has not been afraid to make surprising decisions during his time in north London. The move to omit Ramsdale is the latest high profile route the manager has gone down.

Whether or not he gets back in the side with regularity remains to be seen but it really does feel as though this could be the beginning of the end for the 25-year-old in Arsenal colours.

The same could well be said for Smith Rowe.

The Hale End graduate was on par with Bukayo Saka only a few years ago as he was given the number 10 shirt and made it his own.

Flash back to the 2021/22 campaign and the talented attacking midfielder scored ten goals in one Premier League season.

An England senior debut came but an injury at the start of last term has derailed his progress and development.

Since that breakthrough campaign, the 23-year-old has barely featured. In 2022/23 he only played 12 times in the league, amassing just 161 minutes of football.

Unsurprisngly, the £40k-per-week talent didn't register a single goal in that time. Then, this campaign, he is yet to feature at all in the top-flight.

That is remarkable for someone who was one of the first names on the teamsheet a matter of years ago.

Martin Odegaard's prominence, of course, has not helped, neither has Martinelli's down the left flank. Yet, there was an opening upon the departure of Granit Xhaka.

Kai Havertz, who is yet to score or assist, was given the change to succeed him first. Fabio Vieira has now started ahead of him too. Even Leandro Trossard was preferred in that role during pre-season.

What, therefore, can Smith Rowe do to get in the team? It is remarkable he hasn't even appeared from the substitutes bench yet. His ability to make things happen out of nowhere is a trait very few possess. Only in 2021 did reporter James Benge hail his "special" qualities.

He is now unfortunately joined by his countryman Ramsdale on the bench, hopefully not forever. If that is the case, though, it will be a sorry end for two of the club's most promising English talents.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper could rival Elanga with academy ‘baller’

Over the years, Nottingham Forest have become a pioneer for churning out talent from their academy and allowing them to flourish in the first-team.

Current players Joe Worrall and Ryan Yates' path to the first team stemmed from excelling in the underage groups, earning a call-up to the senior squad and playing significant roles in the club's upward trajectory, making a combined 391 appearances and counting.

On the other hand, the likes of Matty Cash and Brennan Johnson have come through the academy set-up, risen to stardom at the City Ground and then departed the club for pastures new having developed into high-value assets.

While Cash joined Aston Villa for £16m in 2020, Johnson's electric performances in the Premier League last term earned him a £47.5m move to Tottenham this summer.

The talent being churned off the conveyor belt at Forest continues to overflow and the next highly-rated youngster hoping to make his mark in the first-team is 20-year-old winger Brandon Aguilera.

Who is Brandon Aguilera?

A Costa Rican international, Aguilera joined the Reds on a four-year deal from LD Alajuelense in July last year and was instantly loaned back out to Guanacasteca and then Estoril.

While those loans equipped the 20-year-old in how to deal with the hardships of senior football, his return to the City Ground has been well received by Steve Cooper, who spoke highly of the winger and the level of maturity he's shown since moving to England.

He said: "We’ve been really impressed with him, to be honest – his level and his attitude. He’s not from round the corner, is he?! He’s come over here, and for him to settle in like he has, he has a maturity about him.

“He’s a young player who we are enjoying putting a programme in place for. But that will be with us for the medium-term until January, and then we will assess it again then.”

Cooper isn't the only person to wax lyrical about Aguilera's bright prospects, Forest players have picked up on his talents too with Moussa Niakhate dubbing him as a "baller" after he demonstrated some fancy footwork in one particular training session in the pre-season camp in Spain.

After shining bright under the watchful eyes of his teammates, he has since taken that momentum into this campaign, chalking up two goals and one assist in three Premier League 2 appearances, starring alongside the likes of Jamie McDonnell and Ateef Konate.

In the past, Cooper has shown he isn't afraid of throwing youngsters in at the deep end and if Aguilera can continue this early season form, he could get rewarded with opportunities to impress in the first team, potentially rivalling summer signing Anthony Elanga.

How has Anthony Elanga performed for Forest this season?

Similarly to Aguilera, Elanga is a highly-rated young winger who joined the Reds in a £15m move from Manchester United this summer.

The 21-year-old – who has been praised by Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a "great talent" – has so far endeared himself beautifully to the City Ground faithful, assisting Taiwo Awoniyi for his goal against Arsenal and firing home the winner against Chelsea as Forest recorded a famous victory at Stamford Bridge.

With a Sofascore rating of 7.07, Elanga has performed consistently when called upon and has caught the eye with his searing pace and powerful ball carrying, ranking inside the top 7% for progressive carries and top 20% for successful take-ons per 90 when compared to positionally similar players across Europe's top five leagues in the past year, as per FBref.

Aside from demonstrating his ability to burst past defenders at pace and carry Forest into dangerous areas on the counter, Elanga is far from the finished article and given his age, that is to be expected.

The Sweden international falls short when it comes to his output in the final third, and although he's shown glimpses this season, ranking in the top 43% for non-penalty xG and top 46% for assists suggests that his end product can be improved with Aguilera aiming to take advantage of this chink in his armour.

Elanga is statistically better than Aguilera but if the Costa Rican can continue elevating his game to new heights, he could soon rival the 12-cap Swede for a place in the starting XI.

Bracey's rearguard ton can't save Gloucestershire

Twenty-year-old Bracey battled away for seven hours and 28 minutes to make an unbeaten 120 but Glamorgan got home by six wickets

ScorecardJames Bracey’s second Specsavers County Championship century was not enough to save Gloucestershire from a six-wicket defeat by Glamorgan at Bristol.Bracey, the 20-year-old left-hander, battled away for seven hours and 28 minutes to make an unbeaten 120, receiving excellent support from Ryan Higgins (61), Dan Worrall (50) and Matt Taylor (48), all three career-bests, as the hosts fought their way to 372 all out. That set Glamorgan 83 to win in 21 overs. Nick Selman led the way with 36 as his side posted 85 for 4, Aneurin Donald ending the game with a six in the 13th over, and took 22 points to Gloucestershire’s two.”It was really disappointing in the end because we were just a few overs away from saving the game,” Bracey said. “We had to work really hard just to give ourselves a chance of avoiding defeat and the lads in the lower order really stuck it out with me.”We all had to dig in, while taking a few chances to score our runs. In Marchant de Lange they had a bowler who was he difference in the match, with that little bit of extra pace and bounce.”I pride myself on batting time. We have lads around me who are more fluent batsmen, scoring at a quicker rate, but I think it is a real asset in the four-day game to occupy the crease and build around that.”The day began with Gloucestershire 133 for 5, needing 157 to make the visitors bat again. Bracey, who was on 34, and Higgins comfortably negotiated the first 45 minutes.Glamorgan skipper Michael Hogan made the breakthrough with the total on 184, trapping Higgins lbw playing half-forward. Gloucestershire’s winter signing from Middlesex had faced 76 balls and hit eight fours. The stand with Bracey, whose half-century occupied 141 deliveries, was worth exactly 100.Kieran Noema-Barnett contributed 12 before dragging a ball from Carey onto his stumps and departing with the total on 205.Bracey remained unruffled, even when, with his score on 57, Shaun Marsh claimed a catch at square-leg off a pull-shot, the umpires ruling that the ball had not quite carried.”We thought we had Bracey caught by Shaun Marsh, but the umpires decided otherwise and that’s all I can say about it,” Hogan saidLunch was taken at 239 for 7. Early in the afternoon session Worrall, on 27, was dropped by Marsh, top-edging a sweep off Andrew Salter.Worrall moved to his half-century off 71 balls. The Australian had gone into the game with a highest first class score of 26 and bettered it in both innings.Glamorgan took the second new ball with their opponents on 253 for 7, needing a further 37 to avoid an innings defeat. Worrall was bowled off an inside edge by Carey to make it 285 for 8.Taylor got off the mark with a leg-side boundary off Carey and when Bracey took a single off Hogan the scores were level. It was hard going for the bowlers as the pitch had died and even the new ball barely carried through to the wicketkeeper.Bracey remained commendably patient, showing immaculate defence as he moved to a hundred off 273 balls, with 14 fours.Taylor was excellent in support and by tea the pair had added 60, with Gloucestershire 340 for 8 and leading by 40 runs. Their stand had reached 77 in the final session when Taylor, two short of his maiden half-century, edged a ball from offspinner Salter and was caught behind.Liam Norwell, carrying a hamstring injury, walked out with a runner, his side on 362 for 8 and leading by 72. He helped Bracey add ten more runs before being caught behind off a short Hogan delivery.Glamorgan were left needing to score at around four an over, a task which proved well within their capabilities, even though Jack Murphy and Marsh were caught behind down the leg side, while Kiran Carlson and Selman skied catches to deep square.

Josh Tongue licks champions to put Worcestershire on top

Worcestershire’s Josh Tongue showed why he is one of the outstanding fast-bowling prospects in England with an eye-catching spell against the county champions

George Dobell at New Road11-May-2018

Alastair Cook drives•Getty Images

ScorecardJosh Tongue showed why he is one of the outstanding fast-bowling prospects in England with an eye-catching spell against the county champions.Tongue, maintaining a wonderfully probing line and length, accounted for three high-quality batsmen – Dan Lawrence, Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate – for the cost of seven runs in the space of 15 balls. He returned later to claim a fourth wicket and help dismiss Essex for just 177 after they had won the toss and made first use of what appeared to be a decent, if slow, batting surface.Tongue, aged 20, is not an outright fast bowler. He bowls, at his best, at around 85-88 mph and, while modern thinking suggest fast bowlers might benefit from a long delivery stride, his is short. But his action is high and, as a consequence, he gains sharp bounce. He is admirably level-headed – he hardly bowled a short ball throughout – and is his stock delivery is angled in and straightens. These are early days but it is a long, long time since Worcestershire had a home-grown bowler of such potential. The watching Geoff Arnold, former England seamer and now an ECB pace bowling scout, can only have been impressed. The delivery that dismissed Lawrence was a beauty: heading for middle, it pitched full enough and moved just enough to hit the top of off stump. Bopara was unfortunate to receive one that also bounced a little more than expected – there was a spot on a length from the Diglis End that appeared to offer extra bounce all day – while ten Doeschate was beaten by late movement as he attempted to hit through the leg side.”I just tried to hit the pitch hard,” Tongue said. “There’s a bit more bounce than you normally see at New Road and I felt in more rhythm than I have done so far this season.”Tongue’s success reflects well on the Worcestershire production line. He is one of nine home-grown players in this side – Essex also have an admirable eight home-grown players in their team – with the club quietly confident that some of those in waiting in the wings (not least Dillion Pennington, who is thought, at 19, to be the quickest bowler on the staff and Jack Haynes, who is a 17-year-old batsman but could make his Championship debut later in the season) are every bit as good as though who have emerged already. That’s just as well. The club will come under huge pressure to retain the services of Joe Clarke, in particular, with Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire appearing to have hefty budgets to lure players their way. The only sure way for smaller counties to counter such pressures is to ensure there are always more players coming through. It is intriguing to note that, while fast-bowlers around the country appear to be suffering from an epidemic of stress fractures, Worcestershire have a good track-record in that regard. While Tongue had an ankle operation over the winter and Jack Shantry is currently recovering from what might be best described as a wear-and-tear injury, the only stress fracture among the current crop at New Road is that of George Scrimshaw, a tall quick bowler, who spent time on the ECB fast bowling programme over the winter. The difference? It seems that while the ECB programme encourages quite a lot of weights-based training, the Worcestershire program is based far more on mobility and stretching.Top-scorer for Essex was Alastair Cook. Having survived an early scare – had Brett D’Oliverira hit the stumps from square leg, Cook would have been run-out without facing in the first over of the day – he was admirably patient in that first session: leaving the ball well, cutting neatly and driving surprisingly sweetly when the opportunity arose. But much of his good work was squandered when, in the over after the interval, he pushed at one well outside off stump and edged to first slip. The fielder, Ben Twohig, could be forgiven his obvious relief: on his home debut he had dropped Cook to an almost identical stroke the previous ball. While it was the afternoon session that included eight wickets that was most eye-catching, Worcestershire bowled equally impressively in the first session. Fifteen of the 31 overs delivered in that morning session were maidens as Essex were limited to just two runs an over under relentless pressure by an admirably disciplined attack. Varun Chopra, replacing Nick Browne who broke a finger in training, went pushing at one outside off, while Tom Westley, who came into the game having suffered three ducks in the space of seven deliveries in his previous three innings, appeared to play down the wrong line to one.In the afternoon session, Tongue gained fine support from Ed Barnard. While he lacks the pace of Tongue, Barnard is a skilful, disciplined bowler who nibbles the ball both ways and, on these seaming surfaces, presents quite a challenge. Here he had James Foster and Simon Harmer beaten by deliveries that may have come back at them a fraction, with Harmer’s inside edge ballooning off the keeper’s pads to second slip. Only Harmer, with 22, and Peter Siddle, with an uncomplicated 29, offered much resistance after Cook.Worcestershire’s openers survived a testing final session in failing light – play resumed briefly after 6pm – to give their side an excellent platform in the match. With both sides having endured tough starts to the season and both sides facing the prospect of having completed more than a third of their Championship program once this match is complete, the next three days could go a long way to defining the complexion of the rest of their campaigns.

Arsenal transfer news: Edu and Arteta could make offer to sign £17m "hero"

Arsenal are considering an opening offer for a new striker, but a fresh report has revealed that they aren’t the only club looking to bring him to the Premier League.

Who have Arsenal just signed?

At the Emirates Stadium, Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber were the three big-money permanent signings to arrive over the summer, whilst David Raya joined on a season-long loan from Brentford, as per Transfermarkt, and his deal does include an option to buy at the end of the season.

In terms of exits, Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding and Folarin Balogun were among some of the names to leave for good, alongside the likes of Kieran Tierney and Nuno Tavares who have both been sent out on the road for the remainder of the campaign with the aim being to increase their game time.

Ahead of January, sporting director Edu Gaspar and manager Mikel Arteta will have started assessing their options in the market and could look to revisit a deal for Santos centre-forward Marcos Leonardo having sent scouts to watch him back in May alongside Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle, Manchester United, Chelsea and West Ham.

The Brazilian still has another three years remaining on his contract with Diego Aguirre’s side, but having established himself as his homeland outfit’s top-performing offensive player so far this season, he appears to have once again emerged as a target for the hierarchy in North London.

Are Arsenal signing Marcos Leonardo?

According to Spanish reports (via CaughtOffside), Arsenal are “keeping tabs” on Leonardo and may “look to make a move” for him in January.

The Gunners could be “prepared to submit” an offer for the 20-year-old worth in the region of €20m (£17m), and it’s claimed that the opportunity to play in the top-flight in England is likely to be a “tempting proposition” for the young prospect.

Santos striker Marcos Leonardo.

Is Marcos Leonardo a good player?

According to talent scout Jacek Kulig, Leonardo is Santos’ “hero” at the Urbano Caldeira Stadium and he’s more than shown how prolific he can be in the final third over the course of his career, so he is most definitely a fantastic player with a promising future ahead of him.

The Itapetinga native has posted 63 contributions (52 goals and 11 assists) in 156 appearances since first bursting onto the professional scene, so he poses a real threat in the opposition’s box, but even if he doesn’t always find the back of the net, his desire is exceptional.

Sponsored by Nike, the attacker has recorded a total of 44 shots so far this season which is more than any other of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, and he even has the versatility to operate out wide on the left wing and slightly deeper in the midfield alongside his natural role leading the line through the middle.

Arsenal have also recently been linked with a swoop for Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, but with Spurs and Chelsea also in the race to secure his services, Leonardo could prove to be the ideal alternative to pursue should the hierarchy fail to secure the services of the formerly mentioned star.
