Everton: 777 Partners could make "monster" £42m Gueye upgrade their 1st signing

Everton will look to bolster their ranks when the transfer window opens up this coming January, with the Toffees rumoured already to be in for a Manchester City outsider…

Who could Everton sign in January?

Sean Dyche recruited a number of new bodies in the summer to Merseyside, namely the additions of both Beto and Chermiti – the two Portuguese attackers joining the club for around an estimated £30m per Transfermarkt.

The Toffees have also bought shrewdly, utilising the free transfer market with signings such as the experienced Ashley Young coming in for free whilst loaning in Arnaut Danjuma and Jack Harrison to add more quality down the wings.

Jack Harrison

Rumours now suggest that Everton could be circling for a new man in central midfield, new prospective owners in 777 Partners enabling the Toffees to spend in January where funds have been tight before.

Their man could well be Kalvin Phillips, once a "monster" in a Leeds United shirt – as per Yannick Bolasie – the 27-year-old will hope a move away from Manchester City to Merseyside can kickstart his career again.

Rumours are even suggesting his ex-club in Leeds could be sniffing about, Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards commenting on what would be an "ideal move" for the current frustrated midfielder on the BBC's Football Gossip Daily if he was to pack his bags and move back to Elland Road.

kalvin-phillips-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

But, if Phillips was to join Everton – with the Toffees and Newcastle interested in his signature – as per the i – current midfield man for Everton in Idrissa Gueye could be sweating about his immediate future with the Premier League club.

How good is Kalvin Phillips?

£42m man Phillips might well have been reduced to a player on the periphery at Man City – only playing 70 minutes in total this campaign off the bench for the Premier League champions – but there's a reason why Pep Guardiola wanted to bring Phillips to the Etihad in the first place.

Phillips burst onto the scene as an exciting, young talent with Leeds and blossomed into a pivotal part of the successful Marcelo Bielsa's teams of recent memory – epitomising the Argentine manager's need for an energetic man in the centre of the park, able to spray passes with ease to help his team push further up the pitch.

Leeds' Kalvin Phillips

He would give Everton another midfield option to help them shore up more defensively, but also another midfielder who could drive the Toffees forward and contribute with a goal from time to time – Phillips netting 14 goals for Leeds across 234 appearances.

With the likes of Joe Garner, Andre Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure impressing for Sean Dyche's men recently also – both Garner and Doucoure scoring in Everton's emphatic 3-0 win over AFC Bournemouth last time out at Goodison Park – Phillips would give the Toffees another star to slot into an already excellent midfield.

It could, however, signal the end for Idrissa Gueye with the Toffees who was lamented for a "really poor" mistake by Andy Townsend when Arsenal met Everton last term. Even this season, the former PSG man has been "wasteful" in possession.

Crucially, the Senegalese central midfielder isn't getting any younger at 34 years of age, and with an injury ruling him out of the victory versus AFC Bournemouth, it could see him fall down the pecking order in Merseyside especially if Phillips' move to Everton occurs in January.

O vacilo do jovem custou caro.

O Flamengo recebe o Atlético-GO, enquanto o São Paulo visita o Fortaleza.

TIAGO VOLPI VAI BEM; HUGO SOUZA FALHA!

Keaton Jennings ton keeps Lancashire afloat but late wickets damage hopes of miracle

Lancashire made a decent effort in the face of a huge target but still face a tough challenge to take anything from the match

Jon Culley at New Road22-Jun-2018
ScorecardBrett D’Oliveira is effectively on trial as Worcestershire’s interim captain in Joe Leach’s enforced absence, so a degree of conservatism in setting Lancashire a target might be understandable, but even in those circumstances this was possibly taking caution a bit far. No team in the history of first-class cricket has chased down a fourth-innings target bigger than 536. To win here, Lancashire must score 602.Actually, you could see why he was taking no chances in waiting as long as he did, almost an hour and a half into the morning session when spectators arriving for the start were puzzled as to why he had not declared overnight. A lead of 478 was all well and good, but the pitch in use for this game had played very nicely on day two – handsomely exploited by Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell – and, he would have reasoned, this Lancashire line-up has several batsmen with the patience and technique to build long and substantial innings.Indeed, with an hour left on day three, the possibility of Lancashire achieving a truly historic victory did not seem totally out of the question. They had scored more than a third of the runs needed and lost only two wickets. Just the 368 more runs to get, with 110 overs still to play. The loss of Shivnarine Chanderpaul at that point rather changed the dynamics. In his pomp, the gnarled old grinder would have relished such a situation and probably fancied himself to dig in for a very long stay. But he is nearly 44 now and relinquishes his wicket with somewhat less of a fight these days. On 28, with wicketkeeper Ben Cox standing up to seamer Charlie Morris, he dabbed rather ineffectually at a ball outside off stump and was gone, tidily caught behind. With that, you fancied, Lancashire’s focus switched unequivocally from a momentous run chase to damage limitation, with the key to success in that respect – i.e, emerging with a draw – entirely dependent on how many Keaton Jennings could score and whether anyone else could give him the same kind of support that Alex Davies had provided in an opening stand of 126.By the time Chanderpaul departed, the England opener had already delivered reassuring evidence of his continuing form at Championship level with his third red-ball century for Lancashire, with whom the former Durham batsman, the only Lancashire player to emerge from their dismal first innings with much credit, is fast becoming a key figure. He reached 100 from 166 balls, 80 of which he scored in boundaries, zipping across an outfield becoming faster, it seemed, by the minute as the clouds disappeared, the wind dropped and the impending heatwave began to build. He had an escape on 50, put down at slip by Ross Whiteley off D’Oliveira’s legspin, but that was the only chance he offered.D’Oliveira had dismissed both Davies and Haseeb Hameed, and when the Morris-Cox combination claimed a second victim in Rob Jones, the odds against Worcestershire breaking their duck for the season shortened a little more. Jennings and Dane Vilas will have to negotiate the new ball early on the final morning too.In one positive footnote for Lancashire, it was confirmed that Joe Mennie, the Australian bowling allrounder who has been replaced in this match by Danny Lamb in the first use of a concussion substitute in England, suffered nothing worse than mild concussion when he was hit on the head with the ball on Thursday and any absence from cricket should only be brief.

Liam Plunkett finds rhythm with England but could be leaving Yorkshire

The bowler revealed his disappointment at Yorkshire’s decision to drop him during the Royal London Cup and will talk to other counties with his deal expiring this year

England looking for a complete performance – Plunkett

Liam Plunkett has revealed his disappointment at Yorkshire’s decision to drop him during the Royal London Cup, shortly after his return from the IPL, and indicated he is open to moving to another county when his current deal expires. The comments follow on from David Willey’s revelation that Yorkshire threatened to tear up his contract when he signed with the Chennai Super Kings.Plunkett, in the final year of his county contract, made seven IPL appearances for Delhi Daredevils but following his return from India he told he was dropped by Yorkshire’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, for the 50-over fixture against Northamptonshire after he took 1 for 76 from eight overs against Lancashire earlier this month. Speaking ahead of England’s second ODI against Australia in Cardiff, Plunkett said he disagreed with Yorkshire’s assessment that he was “undercooked”.”Yes, I was disappointed,” Plunkett said. “I’d played the previous games and felt I went all right. We won the previous game, so I felt in a good place – but I had one bad performance, and if they want to drop me on that … They said I wasn’t ready, that I looked undercooked.”In what might seem an unusual sequence of events, days after being dropped for a domestic fixture Plunkett was selected in England’s playing XI to face Scotland in the same format. Yorkshire and then-coach Jason Gillespie were given credit for helping Plunkett resurrect his international career after leaving Durham in 2012, but he now appears set to move on.”I just felt I was getting back into it,” Plunkett said. “That was the decision they took … I feel I was coming into a good place and I feel I can help win games for Yorkshire so obviously I was disappointed and I let them know on that.”It’s my last year and I went in for a chat with Martyn Moxon, and obviously as you get a little bit older you maybe think about your base salary coming down and you’re playing for incentives and stuff but I didn’t really get offered anything. They just said we’ll look into it in the next month or so but it gives me a right to speak to other counties and it gives me that option and I’m looking to do that.”Plunkett, along with the rest of the England attack, was hammered by Scotland’s batsmen at The Grange, where he took 2 for 85, but after making changes to his run up he felt his rhythm return at The Oval.”I think in the IPL I came a little bit wider and tried to angle the ball in a little bit and skid it on to the batters,” he said. “But I think my strength is to be on top of the ball, use my bounce and bowl that hard length. I think when I came in I was trying to angle it in a little bit and I was bowling a few wides down the leg side.Liam Plunkett could be leaving Yorkshire when his contract expires•Getty Images

“I played against Lancs and struggled coming off it. So I just looked at a bit of video footage and in the last couple of games – especially the last game – I felt a lot better, I felt my timing came back and my lengths were getting better.”Even if Plunkett bowls well for the rest of the summer, he will relinquish his place in the ODI side for at least two of England’s matches in Sri Lanka in October, when he will marry his partner, Emeleah Erb. The couple set the wedding date before England’s tour dates were finalised.”We planned because originally it was a Test series that was there and I didn’t think I’d be around the Test squad,” Plunkett said. “It’s been eleven years, it’s been long enough so I thought I’d better get married.”We did look at schedules and the best time to do it. There were flights booked from America and a lot of guests coming over and everything was booked, so it was so hard to change it then.”I’m really excited to get married but I am going to miss part of that series. All I can do is try and do well for England this summer and be a part of that team and [make them] think well, he might miss a few games, can we get him for the rest of that Sri Lanka series and keep me in mind going forward.””I’m so excited and can’t wait for the day that I’m not going to change and ruin everything for her.”

Everton: Big Sam nearly replaced Lukaku with amazing star who scored 69 PL goals

Everton are readily associated with being blunt in front of goal, especially in the Farhad Moshiri era, and that is down to a multitude of issues at the club.

From hiring managers whose philosophies don't align towards being fluid in attack – like Sean Dyche – and rarely taking a measured approach in the transfer window, the Toffees have found coming across a lethal finisher hard to come by.

Since being unable to convince goal-scoring monster Romelu Lukaku to stay in 2017, the club has struggled to replace his powers with the likes of Sandro Ramirez, Cenk Tosun, Moise Kean, Josh King and Soloman Rondon all failing dramatically, while only one striker has remained throughout the Moshiri era and that is Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Although a return of 63 goals in 215 appearances is far from clinical, the most recent part of his career has been ravaged by injury troubles and the Englishman hasn't come close to eclipsing the 16 goals posted in the 2020/21 campaign.

While Calvert-Lewin's injuries have only compounded Everton's troubles in recent years, those could have potentially been resolved if they managed to sign Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in 2018.

Did Everton almost sign Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang?

Back when Sam Allardyce was in charge, Everton were interested in signing Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund and the figure touted for the Gabonese international was around £60m.

In an interview with TalkSPORT in 2020, Allardyce later confirmed that interest, claiming that the striker was desperate to leave Germany.

He said: “I tried to buy him at Everton, it was about £60m or £70m I think. We were searching for goals after [Romelu] Lukaku went and just wanted to test the waters.

“We spoke through his agent, and we had a shout that he was apparently desperate to get away from Germany and get into the Premier League."

While Allardyce and Everton didn't get very far in their pursuit of the prolific striker, had they been successful, you'd imagine the Toffees – who instead completed deals for Theo Walcott and Tosun for a combined £47m – would have been in a much better place.

Indeed, Aubameyang went on to join Arsenal for £60m in January 2018 and following his scintillating performances for the Gunners, left Everton ruing their latest transfer mishap.

How many goals did Aubameyang score for Arsenal?

Aubemayang's legacy is tainted at Arsenal by how he departed the club, developing a toxic relationship with former Toffee Mikel Arteta after making multiple disciplinary breaches that saw him get stripped of the club's captaincy.

Despite departing in acrimonious circumstances to join Barcelona in 2022 on a free transfer, the striker – who was likened to Gunners legend Thierry Henry for his performances at the Emirates by Aaron Ramsey – will always be remembered by those associated with the club for his sensational goal-scoring touch.

Arguably the greatest ever striker to grace the north London giants since the Frenchman, Aubameyang's 92 goals in 163 appearances for Arsenal and 69 Premier League goals is a demonstration, if it was ever needed, that the Gabon international was dynamite in front of goal.

Instrumental to Arsenal's explosive attack, having defenders running scared against his searing pace in behind while finding him unstoppable to live with, he was lauded by Gary Neville as "absolutely sensational" and "a Premier League great" for standing toe-to-toe with some of the best forwards to ever grace the division, including Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane and Henry.

During his greatest-ever campaign in a Gunners shirt in 2018/19, in which he finished as the league's top scorer, Aubameyang's 31 goals in competitions was a glowing indication of his ruthlessness in the final third, ranking in the top 4% for non-penalty goals against his positional peers in the Premier League, top 2% for expected goals (xG) and top 4% for goals per shot on target, as per FBref.

An irrepressible monster in front of goal, but also a pressing machine and a leader all rolled into one, the 6 foot 2 phenom rose to the peak of his powers at Arsenal which culminated in a regular demonstration of him being a complete forward, the sort that would have been a resounding success to replace Lukaku at Everton.

Report: Southampton’s “beautiful” playmaker wanted by Premier League club

Southampton could be set to lose one of their top first-team players, with a fresh report revealing that he is being targeted by a big admirer in January.

Southampton transfers 2023

Over the summer, Russell Martin’s side sanctioned the sales of 16 players in total, ten of those being either for a fee or on a free transfer on a permanent basis, whilst the remaining six were sent out on loan for the rest of the season as follows:

Permanent Departures

Loan Departures

Romeo Lavia (Chelsea)

Armel Bella-Kotchap (PSV Eindhoven)

Tino Livramento (Newcastle United)

Duje Caleta-Car (Lyon)

James Ward-Prowse (West Ham United)

Paul Onuachu (Trabzonspor)

Nathan Tella (Bayer Leverkusen)

Romain Perraud (OGC Nice)

Mohammed Salisu (AS Monaco)

Lyanco (Al-Gharafa SC)

Moussa Djenepo (Standard Liege)

Mateusz Lis (Goztepe)

Mislav Orsic (Trabzonspor)

Mohamed Elyounoussi (FC Copenhagen)

Dan Nlundulu (Bolton Wanderers)

Ibrahima Diallo (Al-Duhail SC)

Despite the previous window having now closed, the south coast outfit might still be forced to cash in on some of their players in the new year should they not want to risk losing them for free at the end of the season, one of those being Che Adams, who has publicly refused to admit whether he’s thinking about signing a new contract or leaving.

Adams may not be the only one heading for the exit door though, with Carlos Alcaraz, the central midfielder who has only recently put pen to paper on an improved deal which runs until 2028 (Southampton contracts), having emerged as a target for a club in the Premier League.

Carlos Alcaraz transfer update

According to The Evening Standard, who have delivered a transfer update on Carlos Alcaraz, Fulham are considering a swoop for the 20-year-old in the Championship, but it remains to be seen whether they will make a move for him with other options also on the table.

Fulham are likely to face competition for Guirassy, who joined Stuttgart in a permanent move from French side Rennes over the summer, from a host of bigger clubs.

"The Cottagers remain interested in several alternative forward options, with Genk’s Gift Orban, Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz and Sporting’s Geny Catamo among those also being tracked.”

Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz.

How much did Southampton pay for Carlos Alcaraz?

When Alcaraz signed from Racing Club back in January, Southampton paid £12.3m for his services (Daily Mail), and during his time at the club so far, he’s shown huge glimpses of why he was worth every penny for Sport Republic to splash their cash on.

Argentina’s youth international has posted seven contributions, five goals and two assists, in 32 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Alcaraz statistics), form which has seen him described as a “beautiful” footballer by journalist Josh Bunting.

In addition, Alcaraz currently ranks in the 99th percentile for shots by players in his position, which highlights his constant desire to hit the back of the net even if the end product isn’t always there (FBRef – Alcaraz statistics), so it’s vital that Saints chiefs do everything they can to fend off interest and keep their star in the building for the foreseeable future.
