Sri Lanka far ahead after spinners hurt South Africa

Sri Lanka lost their first three wickets to Keshav Maharaj, but remain in a position to push for victory over the next three days, after taking a first innings lead of 161

Keshav Maharaj gets a breakthrough for the visitors•AFP

Sri Lanka took control of the first Test on a 13-wicket day in Galle, where spinners dominated. After South Africa were shot out for 126 – their lowest total in Sri Lanka – with seven wickets falling to the spin trio of Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera and Lakshan Sandakan, Sri Lanka lost their first three wickets to Keshav Maharaj, but remain in a position to push for victory over the next three days, after taking a first innings lead of 161 runs.On a surface that is taking substantial, but not unplayable turn, anything over 300 would be daunting. For a South African side who woke the ghosts of India 2015, the lead is perhaps already too much.In South Africa’s last eight innings in the subcontinent, they have only managed to score more than 200 runs once and the last time they scored over 300 in Asia was in the Galle Test four years ago. While there are elements of technique that are wanting – the left-handers playing across the line is an example – their confidence is the bigger concern. Collapses of 6 for 51 and 4 for 11, which sandwiched the 64-run seventh-wicket stand between Faf du Plessis and Vernon Philander, would have done nothing to boost their belief.Herath made the first incision into South Africa at the end of the opening day when he removed Aiden Markram, and he did the same on the second morning when he beat nightwatchman Maharaj with an arm-ball. And then the wickets tumbled.Dean Elgar played across a Dilruwan Perera delivery that took the outside edge to offer first slip a catch, Hashim Amla was given out caught at short leg on review off Dilruwan, Temba Bavuma dragged a Sandakan ball onto his stumps as he swept, a shot he had employed with success earlier in his short innings and Quinton de Kock was bowled by Dilruwan, also playing across the line. Shortly after the first drinks, South Africa were 51 for 6, and left du Plessis with the tail.Philander showed the patience the top order lacked and defended solidly, while du Plessis tried to play a more positive role in also searching for runs. The pair ushered South Africa past their lowest total since readmission, 79, and over the 100 mark. Philander was fortunate when Sri Lanka missed a chance to review a Herath delivery that would have gone on to hit middle stump – the last of three opportunities they did not take – and reviewed successfully when he was given out two overs later. He faced 86 balls, only two fewer than du Plessis, before he was out for 18.Du Plessis, celebrating his 34th birthday, played with as much intent as he could and compiled 49. But when Philander went, he followed within three balls. After several inside-edges, du Plessis missed a Suranga Lakmal ball that nipped in and was bowled. Lakmal had not used himself before the 37th over but enjoyed the last bits of reward when he also bowled Rabada and had Steyn caught at first slip.Already low on morale, South Africa’s situation only worsened when Danuskha Gunathilaka and Dimuth Karunaratne put on 51 for the opening stand, denied Dale Steyn the two wickets he needs to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading Test wicket-taker but offered three other chances.Maharaj appealed for lbw against Gunathilaka, but the opener had shuffled far enough across enough to get umpire’s call on impact. Then, Gunathilaka lap-swept Maharaj in front of backward square but Bavuma could not hold on to the catch. Later, Gunathilaka reverse-swept Maharaj between the wicket-keeper and first slip. And this time, Maharaj got his man, and two others, when Gunathilaka picked out deep mid-wicket, Dhananjaya de Silva, who was bowled and Kusal Mendis given out lbw.As he had done in the first innings, Karunaratne anchored Sri Lanka and became only the second batsman after Kumar Sangakkara to score a century and a half-century against South Africa in a Test. He took on the spinners with success, used his feet well and his placement was impressive but he was eventually undone with Kagiso Rabada having him caught at slip. There was no further damage done to Sri Lanka before the close, which gives them the resources to add to their total on the third day.

Newcastle Utd predicted XI vs Man Utd in Carabao Cup

Only a few months ago Newcastle United tasted defeat in the final of the Carabao Cup to Wednesday night's opposition.

Given the Toon's Champions League exploits, an EFL Cup tie might not whet the appetite too much but against a dejected Manchester United, Eddie Howe's men have a wonderful opportunity of getting revenge and advancing to the quarter-finals for a consecutive year.

That said, the Magpies will have to do so without a number of first-team players, meaning a huge degree of rotation in midweek is simply not possible.

However, four changes in some key areas could still be expected from Howe with a tough game against Arsenal to come next weekend. Here's the manager's predicted XI…

1 GK – Martin Dubravka

Nick Pope has been the undisputed number 1 this season, as expected, but a rare opportunity looms on Wednesday evening for Martin Dubravka, who will be hoping to get one over the Red Devils having spent a period of time on loan at Old Trafford last term.

2 RB – Tino Livramento

Rather understandably right-back Tino Livramento has only played 45 minutes of football in the Premier League this season. Kieran Trippier has been on fire with seven assists in all competitions but like in the last round deserves the night off on this occasion.

3 CB – Jamal Lascelles

Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles.

With Sven Botman still on the treatment table club captain Jamal Lascelles is set to retain his starting berth against United despite conceding twice against Wolves last weekend.

4 CB – Fabian Schar

Howe isn't blessed with many options in the centre of defence at the moment. Dan Burn could be shifted across from left-back but it's expected an unchanged middle pairing will take to the field on Wednesday night with Fabian Schar starting again.

5 LB – Lewis Hall

Speaking of Burn, he could also be given the night off this week with Lewis Hall set to earn some rare minutes at left-back this time out. Having arrived from Chelsea in the summer he has struggled to catch the eye of Howe, having featured in just 54 minutes across all competitions.

6 CB – Sean Longstaff

kalvin-phillips-sean-longstaff-newcastle-opinion

With Sandro Tonali now banned and unable to play until next August and Lewis Miley injured, it means a great deal of rotation won't be afforded in the middle of the park. As such, the ever-reliable Sean Longstaff, who has only missed one game all season, will keep his place in midfield.

7 CM – Joe Willock

emile-smith-rowe-joe-willock-newcastle-opinion

The only change in midfield is set to see Joe Willock come back into the team at the expense of Bruno Guimaraes who is rested ahead of the game with Arsenal. Due to injury, the Gunners academy graduate has only played 38 minutes this campaign so it will be a fabulous opportunity to prove both form and fitness to his manager.

8 CM – Joelinton

Newcastle midfielder Joelinton.

The menacing Brazilian makes up the last spot in midfield with Joelinton's bite from central areas set to be key to Newcastle reaching the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

9 RW – Miguel Almiron

allan-saint-maximin-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

Due to injury, the Toon are unlikely to be able to make many changes in attacking areas. Jacob Murphy is out so Miggy Almiron looks set to keep his place on the right-hand side of the forward line this week.

10 LW – Anthony Gordon

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

With Harvey Barnes injured, there is only really one option for Howe to select on his left flank, Anthony Gordon. The Everton academy graduate has been in flying form this season having posted three goals and two assists so will be a huge threat to Man United.

A expulsão tirou o Flamengo do jogo.

Antes, Filipe Luís, Gerson e Pedro haviam cobrado e feito as penalidades.

Rikki Clarke proves enduring value as Surrey close in on title

Surrey took another significant step on their way towards a first Championship title since 2002 as they bowled Essex out for 126 and enforced the follow-on at Chelmsford

Matt Roller at Chelmsford05-Sep-20181:45

Drama at Taunton as Somerset and Lancashire tie

ScorecardSurrey took another significant step on their way towards a first Championship title since 2002 as they bowled Essex out for 126 and enforced the follow-on at Chelmsford. With Somerset’s game against Lancashire ending in a spectacular tie as they failed to chase 78 on a turning pitch at Taunton, Surrey will go 43 points clear at the top if they complete victory here, and if this performance from their bowlers is anything to go by, they may not even have to bat again.Their four-pronged seam attack of Morne Morkel, Tom Curran, Rikki Clarke and Conor McKerr shared ten wickets between them, and it was Clarke who did most of the damage. In a nine-over spell from the River End he removed Ravi Bopara, Ryan ten Doeschate, Tom Westley and Simon Harmer to quash any hopes of an Essex recovery after they had slumped to 20 for 3.Clarke moved the ball considerably in the air, finding late swing and benefiting from the variable bounce on offer – a handful deliveries shot up off the pitch – as he rattled through the middle-order in conditions that could hardly have suited his medium-fast seamers better; the sun did not so much as threaten to escape behind a sheet of clouds, and bad light and drizzle brought proceedings to an end only seven overs after tea.As much as Surrey’s season will be remembered for Rory Burns’ runs and Morkel’s fearsome mid-season form, it is impossible to overlook Clarke’s contribution. He now has 37 Championship wickets at a shade over 20, to go with 392 runs and 13 catches; he turns 37 at the end of this season, and not even his most ardent supporters could have predicted the transformative effect he would have on this side when his move from Warwickshire was confirmed last season.Clarke also added useful runs in the morning session in an enterprising innings of 56. After pulling his first ball for a nonchalant four, he offered stubborn resistance in bowler-friendly conditions alongside Curran, before clubbing 26 runs off his final 13 balls as he ran out of partners. It was a largely brutish innings, with a couple of orthodox slogs down the ground for six, but he threw in a deft reverse-sweep and an elegant cut as if only to prove how malleable his game is.Rikki Clarke produced a penetrative burst•Getty Images

While Essex will attribute their surrender to poor shots and a batting order that has not fired all season, Surrey were irresistible with the ball. Curran and Morkel were hostile in their opening spells, as their accounted for Nick Browne, Varun Chopra, and Dan Lawrence, before Clarke ran through the middle order and McKerr mopped up the tail.On the day that Alastair Cook’s new three-year deal at the club was confirmed, Chopra must have felt disappointed with his dismissal, caught well by (guess who?) Clarke in the slips playing a flashy drive at a ball he had no need to play. He now averages 16.7 this season; when Cook returns, he looks like the man most likely to drop out.Tom Westley, another Essex batsman struggling for runs, was the only one in the top eight to reach double figures, and fought hard before falling one short of just a second half-century of the season.Westley was not at his fluent best – as was the case in his gritty 56 at Taunton and in last week’s win over Hampshire – but he was organised, determined, and creamed a pair of cover drives for four in the space of three Curran balls. He looks to have benefitted from the decision to leave him out of the second half of Essex’s Blast campaign, and will hope that he can find his best form before the season’s close. The tag of champions-elect can loom over a team at this stage of the season, but Surrey look good value for it. Their visit to Taunton in the penultimate round of games had been highlighted as a possible title-decider – and they can expect another lively wicket if the Championship race is still alive – but wins here and at New Road next week would effectively wrap the pennant up.On the basis of this performance, it would be impossible to argue that they have not been good value for it.

Spurs could sign £100m "superstar" who Son would love

After a decade-long relationship, Tottenham Hotspur and Harry Kane decided to part ways, with the England captain moving to German champions Bayern Munich for £100m in the summer.

The loss of the club's record goalscorer hadn't really taken its toll on the squad after a high-flying start to the season under Ange Postecoglou. However, following recent injuries to key players such as Richarlison and James Maddison, Spurs are starting to feel the hangover from Kane's departure.

Now, Postecoglou has set his sights on finally replacing Kane, although Tottenham's new head coach certainly has an expensive palate.

Evan Ferguson to Tottenham links

According to talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur have turned their attention to Brighton and Hove Albion's 19-year-old star Evan Ferguson, with the Europa League club slapping a £100m price tag on the Republic of Ireland centre-forward.

Ferguson penned a new six-year deal last week, keeping him at the Amex Stadium until 2029, amid interest from suitors in the Premier League, which has undoubtedly added value to Brighton's asking price.

Additionally, talkSPORT are claiming that no release clause has been inserted into Ferguson's contract, allowing the Seagulls to dictate his market value when clubs enquire about signing the youngster.

Ferguson has been making waves on the south coast and has already scored 15 professional goals in 43 appearances for Brighton since making his debut for the first team two seasons ago, including a hat-trick against Newcastle United at the beginning of the current campaign. The Irishman recently became the first player in the Premier League to score ten goals in a calendar year since Wayne Rooney.

England icon Gary Lineker believes there is even a "hint of [Erling] Haaland" in his style of play. Meanwhile, former Liverpool striker Danny Murphy has called Ferguson a "superstar". Promising signs indeed for Spurs.

Why Heung-min Son would love Evan Ferguson

This season alone, Ferguson has found the net five times under Roberto De Zerbi in 11 league appearances, although the young striker has yet to convert any opportunities in three games in Europe. Nevertheless, Spurs' main number '9' Richarlison has scored just two goals this season in 11 matches in all competitions, the same number as centre-back Cristian Romero.

The primary source of goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season has been club captain Heung-min Son, having bagged eight goals in 13 matches with a conversation rate of 36%, according to the BBC.

While Richarlison has already scored double his tally from last season, his contribution is nowhere near enough to replace Kane's 32 goals from the previous campaign and the South Korean has an enormous goal-scoring burden as a result.

Ferguson is the man to help him in that regard. Compared to Spurs' Brazilian forward, he has been holding his own amongst some of the best centre-forwards in Europe's top five leagues. As per FBref's data, the Ireland international is in the top 3% for passes completed per 90, the top 14% for non-penalty goals per 90, the top 19% for goals per 90, the top 9% for shots on target per 90 and the top 5% for outperforming his xG.

The Irishman's displays in a blue and white shirt have led highly-rated manager De Zerbi to label his star striker as "incredible". The teenager is boasting 0.77 goals per 90 this season in the Premier League while Richarlison has managed merely 0.17 goals per 90. Additionally, the Brazilian is registering 0.46 expected goals per 90 which is actually higher than Ferguson's 0.42.

Son has been Spurs' most potent player this season but Ange needs a frontman who can contribute more to the team than Richarlison and, while pricey, Ferguson may just be what the doctor ordered in terms of relieving that burden from their captain's shoulders.

Having been described as "Harry Kane-esque" by Jamie O'Hara, a man Son shared quite the relationship with, it's safe to say he'd love another similar player next to him.

Sarfraz miffed by skewed Asia Cup scheduling

Pakistan captain asks why India don’t have to switch back and forth between venues when all the other teams do

Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan captain, hasn’t taken the Asia Cup scheduling too kindly, given it will leave his team travelling back and forth from Abu Dhabi to Dubai for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. This will also be the case for Afghanistan and Bangladesh, while India have been exempted from the 90-minute trip.As per the rules, the team that finishes second in Group A will play their first Super Four game in Abu Dhabi. However, a late tweak has been made by the organisers to ensure India will continue to be based in Dubai, irrespective of where they finish in the pool.”If you talk about the pool, India remain here even if they lose,” Sarfraz said. “Travelling is an issue. If you travel for one-and-a-half hour during matches, then it’s tough. In this weather, it is tough because after one day you play another game. I think it should be even for all the teams, whether it’s India or Pakistan. If there are matches in Abu Dhabi, then every team has to play there. I don’t know what the Asian Cricket Council has done about it.”Scheduling aside, a focused Sarfraz fielded a variety of questions, from the pressure of an India-Pakistan game to the hype associated with it. His solution to prevent players from feeling the pinch of an India-Pakistan contest is to play every game with that intensity. He has, however, been telling his team one thing – “The Champions Trophy win is history. Don’t look too much into it.””It’s in the past now. Obviously, it was a great win and we have good memories that will be with us forever, but this is a new game, a new event,” he said. “The atmosphere has changed, we have winning momentum [from the game against Hong Kong] which we want to carry forward.”The one thing he has completely distanced himself from is social media and television news. He had a taste of the build-up for the clash back home, but wants to stay away from the hype to remain focused. He hopes his team would be able to do the same. There will be added attention to the match, with Imran Khan, their World Cup-winning captain and now Prime Minister of the country, likely to be in attendance.”We’ll try to take the game as a normal game. I’ve told the players to play the match in the same manner as we do normally,” Sarfraz said. “The fans say that whatever happens you have to win, but as a captain, I have to win against every team. In the past, it has happened that whoever performs in the [India-Pakistan] match becomes a hero.”Sarfraz also didn’t make much of India being without Kohli. “As far as India is concerned, Kohli is their captain for the last two years or so, so as a team it [playing under someone else] is different for them,” he said. “I don’t know what Rohit’s thinking as captain is, whether he takes the same strategy. [Kohli] is a world-class player, but they have got some very good players and have done well in the past.”
