Top 11 footballers to feature on reality TV

Footballers are only human, and they love making fools of themselves on reality TV just like us normal folk. Sometimes it's TV gold, sometimes it's a disaster for everyone involved.

Football FanCast takes a look at the top ten times footballers have appeared on reality TV.

David Seaman

Dancing on Ice, 2006

If there is one thing we like making celebrities do, it's dance for us. Dancing on Ice adds the extra element of literally being on ice, a concept ex-England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman was more than happy to get involved with.

Seaman was a fairly safe pair of hands back on his day, excluding that infamous lob from Ronaldinho at the 2002 World Cup, but he wasn't particularly known for being any good with his feet. He was injured while attempting a move called the 'headbanger' during rehearsals.

In typical Seaman spirit though, he powered through, being eliminated just before the final. He continued to do live shows, where he would eventually meet his current wife, Frankie Poultney. So, all in all, it did have a happy ending.

Bruce Grobbelaar

Hell's Kitchen, 2009

Zimbabwean goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar is no stranger to controversy. Having been accused of match-fixing during his time at Liverpool – an allegation that Grobbelaar disputes to this day – he must have felt right at home with celebrity chef Marco Pierre-White in Hell's Kitchen.

Grobbelaar surprised many by being one of the stand-out performers of the show, impressing the man who mentored Gordon Ramsay, along with his fellow competitors. In the end, he decided to leave the show on his own terms, saying that he missed his wife too much and would rather be with her.

Pierre-White implored him to stay, but it wasn't enough. We like to think Grobbelaar kept up with cooking, making his wife a tasty homemade meal every night in a quaint cottage somewhere. All the best, Bruce.

Paul Gascoigne

L'isola dei Famosi, 2021

Our very own Gazza has quite the cult following over in Italy following his spell at Lazio between 1992-95. So much so, he was asked to be a contestant on L'isola dei Famosi – Italy's version of 'Survivor' in 2021.

Unfortunately, Gazza was forced to pull out of the show following a shoulder dislocation during one of the trials. He could be seen grimacing and waiting for medical staff just after. He continued with a sling around his arm, but was forced to retire after problems persisted.

Despite his injury, Gazza was looking well and in fine form amongst his fellow competitors. The teary reunion shows just how much of a beloved personality he truly is. It's good to see Gazza doing well!

Stan Collymore

The Farm, 2004

Channel 5's The Farm was a short-lived reality TV show that pitted celebrities together to see who would come out at 'top farmer' between the years of 2004-2005. Unsurprisingly, there were only two seasons, with ex-Liverpool player Collymore featuring in the first.

He didn't last long. Collymore walked away from the show, not because it was ridiculous, but because he fell out with rapper Vanilla Ice.

Collymore has since stayed away from reality TV, which is probably for the best. We wouldn't want to see him get in a scrap with Fred Durst in a hairdresser's.

Jermaine Pennant

Celebrity Big Brother, 2018

Jermaine Pennant is on the long list of footballers from the early 2000s who didn't live up to their potential. He played for some of the biggest clubs in the country, such as Liverpool and Arsenal, but never really made it. Still, he's used to a certain type of lifestyle, and one way to keep that up is through reality TV.

In 2018, Pennant was on Celebrity Big Brother, flirting and kissing glamour model Chloe Ayling while his wife was at home. It's almost as though he didn't realise the entire premise of the show was being recorded at all times of the day.

It didn't end there. Determined to save his marriage, Pennant took his wife onto the Jeremy Kyle show. His foolproof plan didn't work though, and Alice Goodwin left him after nine years of "ups and downs".

Neil Ruddock, John Fashanu, Carlton Palmer and Frank Worthington

Come Dine With Me, 2010

Football in the 90s was pretty wild. The introduction of the Premier League in 1992 meant piles of money became available to clubs so they could bring in the best talent from all around the world, but players like Neil Ruddock, John Fashanu and Carlton Palmer were still knocking about. Frank Worthington was player-coach of his hometown team, Halifax Town, at the time.

As it turns out, these four produced some very good TV. They got on really well, they were funny, and made some pretty tasty-looking food. There was fancy dress, and Neil Ruddock appeared with nothing but an apron on. It's pretty much exactly how you'd imagine it would have gone, only with less swearing.

Still, it's disappointing John Fashanu didn't go on a rant and accuse Frank Worthington of having a sad little life.

Lee Sharpe

Celebrity Love Island, 2005

Love Island is intrinsically linked with football whether you like it or not. It may now be a hotbed of buff semi-professionals looking for the 15 minutes of fame their careers didn't produce, but back in season one, a floppy-haired Lee Sharpe rocked up looking for love.

The ex-Manchester United winger had just retired from the game and was hoping to finally settle down at the ripe old age of 34. He caught the eye of many of the women on the show, including eventual winner Jayne Middlemiss, but spent most of his time with Liz McClarnon, whom he finished in 6th place with.

Sharpe and his family have since moved to Spain where they've opened a successful sports bar called Sharpey's. His quest for love on Love Island may not have worked out, but that sounds like a pretty good life to us.

Danny Mills

Celebrity Masterchef, 2012

Ex-England international Danny Mills joins Bruce Grobbelaar on the more wholesome side of reality TV when he signed up for Celebrity Masterchef in 2012. Unlike Grobbelaar, Mills saw it out until the end, finishing second to actress Emma Kennedy.

He may have lost, but Mills apparently makes a banging sea bass with fennel and chilli risotto. Just like Grobbelaar, we hope Mills has kept up with it. Hopefully, we'll get invited over to his to eat some fish and drink some organic wine.

Jill Scott

I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, 2022

The first footballer on this list to have actually won the show they were on, ex-Manchester City midfielder Scott made a real name for herself in the jungle. Her career as a TV personality has since taken off having appeared as a pundit for several WSL and Premier League games.

Scott excelled in the jungle, winning an incredible 97% of available stars when she competed. For those who don't know, contestants get stars that help get food for their teammates. Scott essentially fed the rest of the jungle in Australia during her stint, which came just months after retiring as a European champion with the Lionesses.

Shola Ameobi

Cribs, late 2000s

Back in the early 2000s, MTV's Cribs was a pretty big deal. It was an opportunity for the rich and famous to show off the things they spent their money on. It turns out money can't buy taste after all, but it can buy a 55-inch plasma screen TV!

Ameobi was a big fan of hats. "I love wearing hats, lots of shapes and sizes of hats that I love wearing, just different sizes and colours really," he said on his episode of Cribs. But the most impressive thing at his place was his coffee table that lights up. He loved that thing.

"I have actually [still got it]," the ex-Newcastle United forward said when he was asked about the table in 2017. "My missus hates it but it doesn’t light up anymore, it’s just a coffee table now."

Warner and Smith's grassroots lessons will boost Australian cricket – Stuart Law

The newly appointed Middlesex head coach believes Australia are at too low an ebb to ignore the clamour to recall the two banned Australia cricketers in March, when their year-long bans elapse

The enforced returns of Steven Smith and David Warner to Sydney grade cricket may have unexpected benefits for Australia’s cricket as a whole, says Stuart Law, the former Test batsman, who believes a vital link between the country’s grassroots and elite levels is in urgent need of nurturing.Law, who has joined Middlesex as head coach following a two-year stint with West Indies, believes that Australia – who recently lost a home Test series to India for the first time in their history – are at too low an ebb to ignore the clamour to recall Smith and Warner in March, when their year-long bans elapse in the wake of the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal. However, while Australia’s senior teams have struggled in the absence of their former captain and vice-captain, Law expects both players to have grown as people by the time they become available again. Moreover, he believes that the young players they have been rubbing shoulders with on the Sydney club circuit in recent months will have learnt huge amounts about what it takes to succeed at the highest level.”Personally, I would [put Warner and Smith back in]; I think a lot of people will want that to happen,” Law said.”I think [them] playing club cricket this summer will not only have given them an idea of what life is really about, it’s helped the young kids they’ve been playing with to improve,” he added. “They are still very much looked up to in Australia as cricketers. They are two very fine players, and Australia could do worse than get them straight back in.”Law himself played in a golden era of Australian cricket, in which the pressure for places was so intense that he managed to feature in just a solitary Test, as an injury replacement for Steve Waugh against Sri Lanka in 1995-96, and 54 ODIs.And part of the reason for that surfeit of international-quality players, Law believes, is the education that his generation was given during their early days in grade cricket, when they would be rubbing shoulders with Test stars on a weekly basis.”Australia have got the talent, they’ve just lost track of what’s important,” he said. “That was always the case when I started playing grade cricket in Brisbane. I was a 15-year old sharing the dressing room with Allan Border, Greg Ritchie, Kepler Wessels. That doesn’t happen much anymore.”The Test players don’t play club cricket much once they are away from Test duties. They are wrapped up in cotton wool and put away, whereas kids coming through learn from guys who’ve done it before.”The scheduling of Australia’s season has not helped the Test team either, Law added. The Big Bash League invariably clashes with the Melbourne and Sydney Tests over the festive period, which prevents both new players and those in need of form from getting sufficient first-class experience, before being pitched into the international fray.”The players they have playing for Australia are good players,” Law said. “But whether they are playing enough of the right format at the right time, given the national team’s commitments, that probably leaves something to be desired.”I think the staging of the Big Bash, right in the middle of the Test summer, is probably not the smartest move. It doesn’t help keep guys in nick for four-day red-ball cricket.”We keep hearing [the BBL] is doing so well, but if that’s so, play it in February and March, don’t take up that time when the boys should be playing red-ball alongside the Tests.”With the Ashes looming in August, Law says that he will be watching keenly from his new vantage point at Lord’s, and while he expects England to begin the series as favourites, he is adamant that Smith and Warner’s returns would be a massive boost to Australia’s prospects.”There will also be the odd one or two saying they should go back into club cricket and work their way back through,” he said. “But the quality of player they are missing out on, I think Australia would be mad not to use their services straight away.”

Beale’s first job must be to unleash "flamboyant" Sunderland gem

Mike Dodds' interim spell in charge of Sunderland looks to have ended in a whimper rather than a bang, the Black Cats losing 1-0 to Bristol City last time out with the Tyne and Wear side now gearing up to announce Tony Mowbray's successor imminently.

Mowbray's successor looks as though it could be former Rangers and QPR manager Michael Beale, a potential appointment met with many detractors owing to the 43-year-old's recent failures with the Gers and the fact he walked out on the Hoops just months into his tenure at Loftus Road to move to Ibrox.

Failing to get a deal over the line to secure the services of a left-field manager from afar in both Will Still and Kim Hellberg, Beale could still freshen things up and give the entire Sunderland squad a boost on his suspected arrival.

Jewison Bennette in particular will welcome the new appointment, a fresh set of eyes in the dug-out who could give the dynamic Costa Rican forward more first-team opportunities at the Stadium of Light soon.

Frozen out by Mowbray, the 19-year-old has shown glimpses of his quality for the Black Cats when used sporadically in the past.

Jewison Bennette's numbers for Sunderland

Rumoured to be loaned out in the coming transfer window, owing to just 79 minutes of senior action, Beale could give Bennette a lifeline by playing him in the first team more.

Described as a "flamboyant winger" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig on social media, Bennette has shone in patches on rare senior occasions for the Black Cats.

This season, the 19-year-old tricky attacker entertained the Sunderland masses with a dazzling cameo versus Southampton in a comprehensive early campaign 5-0 win.

Bennette had a part to play in adding more salt to the Saints' wound, only amassing seven touches – as per Sofascore – but assisting Chris Rigg's goal late into the game to make the scoreline even more embarrassing for Russell Martin's visitors.

Skilfully taking it past two Southampton defenders with outrageous showboating, his cross after pulling off the skills was also floated in expertly for Sunderland's 16-year-old midfielder to head home.

Bennette is yet to experience more first-team action this season, but has been impressive in the Premier League 2 during his short time at the Stadium of Light too – scoring two goals and assisting a further four from ten U21 appearances to date.

The bold left winger could be given a chance to impress in the first-team fold under Beale however, who has previously enhanced players in that very position at other clubs he's managed.

Why Bennette could benefit from Beale

In his previous job post at QPR, the divisive 43-year-old got the best out of former Arsenal man Chris Willock down the flanks who plays where Bennette operates.

Willock would become a man possessed under Beale, scoring six goals and picking up one assist under Beale's guidance in west London before Rangers came calling.

The goal output dried up after for QPR's number seven without the 43-year-old in the dug-out, only helping himself to one more assist during the entire rest of the 2022-23 season with zero goals scored.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Football journalist Jack Austwicke described Bennette as "hungry" and having a desire to "want to learn earlier in the year when speaking to Football League World, and so the Costa Rican forward will hope he can push on and advance his game under new potential Black Cats boss Beale by showing his eagerness and willingness to make strides.

Bennette won't come in and displace the likes of Jack Clarke – the ex-Leeds United winger into double figures for the season already with ten goals – but the new Sunderland manager will want to utilise his squad more effectively than Mowbray.

He can start that by giving Bennette far more first-team chances, hoping to work his Willock magic on the promising attacker.

Deandra Dottin's all-round brilliance demolishes Pakistan

She followed her dominant 96 with 3 for 14 to hand Pakistan a 146-run loss in the first ever women’s ODI at the Dubai International Stadium

Deandra Dottin demolished Pakistan in the first ever women’s ODI to be played at the Dubai International Stadium, with a dominant 96 and 3 for 14. Her all-round brilliance handed Pakistan a 146-run drubbing and West Indies two championship points.West Indies secured the victory after Pakistan lost 9 for 24 to be dismissed for 70 in their chase of 217. Javeria Khan had stood in as captain in place of Bismah Maroof who was rested after she was hit on the jaw while attempting to catch the ball on the eve of the game.Dottin’s disdainful all-round show followed a productive T20I series in which she struck 158 runs and took three wickets. On Thursday, after West Indies had laboured to 25 for 1 in the Powerplay, she bailed her side out of trouble. Dottin’s opening partner Kycia Knight, though, was bowled for an 18-ball duck in the sixth over by Sana Mir.Dottin, however, found able assistance from the returning captain Stafanie Taylor, who had opted out of the T20I series in Karachi that West Indies won 2-1. They brought up the team fifty in the 22nd over, and then in the next over, Dottin cut loose to smash Umaima Sohail for 11 runs. The pair put on a 146-run stand, West Indies’ fifth highest in ODIs. They attacked offspinner Nida Dar and left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu in the 37th and 38th overs, before medium-pacer Kainat Imtiaz had Taylor holing out to Sidra Ameen in the 40th over for an enterprising 97-ball 58, her first international fifty in nearly a year.Dottin muscled eight fours and two sixes in her 139-ball knock, but was denied a hundred by Imtiaz, who ended with 3 for 49. After Dottin’s departure, contrasting cameos from Shermaine Campbelle (26* off 30 balls) and Chinelle Henry (18* off 9 balls) hauled West Indies past 200.In reply, Pakistan folded for 70 in 29.5 overs. After they lost Sidra Ameen for a duck in the second over, Nahida Khan, the other opener, top-scored with a 47-ball 23. However, she had to retire hurt after being hit on the visor of her helmet. Soon after, Dottin bowled the No. 4 batsman Sohail for a golden duck, in the 17th over, triggering a full-blown collapse. With Aimen Anwar opting not to bat after sustaining a hamstring injury during West Indies’ innings, Pakistan’s chase had a premature end.Like Dottin, Afy Fletcher contributed handsomely in scripting Pakistan’s downfall, picking up 3 for 17 in 8.5 overs.

Arsenal can land £52m-rated Saliba partner who has "same attributes as Van Dijk"

Mikel Arteta will be disappointed that his side failed to return to the top of the Premier League on Thursday night, after Arsenal were unable to breakdown West Ham United.

The game concluded 2-0 to the visitors, which was the Gunners' first home defeat of the season in 13 matches.

Arteta lining up Arsenal bid for their new Ozil in “wonderful” £34m talent

Mikel Arteta wants to add a future star to his side this January.

ByTom Lever Dec 28, 2023

With a title charge set to be guaranteed in the coming months, the boss will want to strengthen his squad, in particular his defensive department, which is slightly thin.

Arsenal transfers latest – Matthijs de Ligt

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Arsenal wants to prioritise the defence in the market, with the recruitment team admirers of Matthijs de Ligt.

De Ligt

The Dutch defender is valued at £52m – as per CIES Football Observatory – which is likely to be out of the Gunners budget this winter.

The club does want to recruit in January, but a loan move seems to be the most likely, with De Ligt looking more like a summer signing.

Matthijs de Ligt’s style of play

The left side of Arsenal's backline has raised eyebrows at times over the last couple of seasons, and Arteta will be hoping that De Ligt can have a Virgil Van Dijk-like impact on his side, as when the Liverpool captain first joined the club, he slotted into left centre back and transformed the team.

However, according to Nathan Ake, the Gunners would be getting their own version of the ex-Southampton defender, as the current Bayern man has “got a lot of the same attributes as Van Dijk." With that in mind, below is a table that compares De Ligt's stats from the last year across the top European leagues to Van Dijk's Premier League stats this season.

Firstly, the Dutch centre-backs are both tall, which makes them incredibly dominant in the air. Not only is this important when defending crosses into the box and when dealing with direct long balls, but it also makes them a huge threat in the opponent’s box from set pieces.

Usually, height and size make defenders sluggish, and it can eliminate some centre backs ability to defend 1v1 scenarios, but they are both fleet-footed, can recover quickly, and are extremely dynamic, to the point where attackers will not even attempt to dribble past them.

Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Furthermore, they both possess elite ball-playing ability and can progress the ball with ease using their pinpoint passing. Van Dijk is particularly known for his ability to play accurate diagonal long balls to Mohamed Salah on the right wing, and if De Ligt were to join Arsenal, he could recreate that by utilising his passing range to find Bukayo Saka.

The duo are also commanding leaders who provide reassurance to the backline, which in De Ligt’s case is highlighted by the fact he became Ajax’s youngest ever captain at the age of 19. His experience at the age of just 24 is often undermined.

Overall, the signing of the Ajax Acadamy graduate would take the Gunners to a whole new level, and the prospect of a complete centre-back pairing would petrify Premier League attackers. However, funnily enough, De Ligt is the most similar player to William Saliba’s current partner Gabriel, according to FBref’s similar players model, which just makes him a better like-for-like replacement.

To have the Dutchman slotting in alongside Saliba – who has been dubbed "exceptional" for his fine form over the last year or so by his manager – could well represent a dream partnership as far as the north Londoners are concerned.

Although £52m is a large fee, it does seem almost like a bargain when you consider De Ligt’s vast skillset and leadership qualities, as well as his likeness to compatriot, Van Dijk.
