Bairstow backs Sunrisers' underemployed middle order

The middle-order batsmen have fluffed their lines a few times but lack of opportunities is to blame for it to a large extent, says Bairstow

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s under-performing middle-order batsmen have found support in head coach Tom Moody and opening batsman Jonny Bairstow, who both feel that the unflattering numbers must not be taken at face value given how little exposure the batsmen have got this season as a result of the rollicking opening stands. The opening pair of David Warner and Bairstow have put up six 50-plus stands this season in eight innings, and on four of those occasions, they have batted either close to the halfway mark or well beyond it. Of the 907 balls Sunrisers have faced this season, 60.41% have been faced by Warner (310) and Bairstow (238). Vijay Shankar, who began the tournament at No. 3 and has gone at No. 4 whenever Kane Williamson has played, is the nearest to either of the openers in terms of time in the middle: 113 balls, less than half Bairstow’s tally. And while Sunrisers have traditionally been top-heavy, these numbers have meant that 72.87% of the deliveries have been faced by just three of their batsmen. And while the upside is that these batsmen have done well, making nearly 80% of their runs, those next in line, like Manish Pandey and Deepak Hooda at 58 balls each, have had below-average returns.”The middle-order question does confuse me,” Moody said on Saturday. “Because, on one hand, there’s enormous compliments being passed about the Warner-Bairstow combination. And quite rightly so. They’ve been terrific up front. [But] when you have that dominance up front, your middle order gets left in the dark. They get very little opportunities.”When you’re 2 for 30, 3 for 40, your middle order are getting exposed and they’re getting plenty of balls to have an influence on the game. Our middle order hasn’t had as much exposure purely because of the number of balls our top order has consumed. So, yes there’s been a couple of moments in the games we’ve played to date, where the middle order had their chance to shine and they failed. But it’s not a consistent thing. I think you need to look what influence our top order is having and the number of balls they’re facing, compared to a lot of other teams. It’s slightly different, the way we’ve gone about it, purely because of the dominance of Warner and Bairstow.”Jonny Bairstow and David Warner get together•BCCI

Bairstow, who batted with much of that middle order in their win against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday, sympathised on similar lines.”I think a lot of people have been a bit harsh on the middle order. We’ve got some fantastic players in that middle order. Davey and I have done a fairly good job, so when they’ve been coming in, they’ve been coming in [practically] down the order, so they don’t have too much time in the middle to gain any momentum with it,” he said. “You look at that middle order and you’ve got some fantastic players in it. You’ve got one of the guys that’s been selected in the Indian World Cup team [Vijay Shankar], you’ve got Kane Williamson, who is one of the best players in the world, Yusuf Pathan whose record speaks for itself. So there’s not too many more people you’d want in that middle order to be honest. There’s a reason why they’ve done so well over the last couple of years and (the team has) got to finals and playoffs.”Regardless of this context, Sunrisers will be wary as they begin the second half of the season trying to punch their way up on the table. Bairstow leaves the side for World Cup duties on April 24, which could likely mean Williamson jumps back up as first-choice opener. Williamson himself has not had an exciting season so far, and while he’s had most of his success for the franchise as an opener, they’ll be far from putting all their bets on his taking over exactly where Bairstow leaves off in an outlandishly perfect opening partnership.Martin Guptill also waits on the sidelines, but a move up for Williamson will likely open up spots for experienced middle-order players in Mohammad Nabi and Shakib Al Hasan.”Obviously we’ve been aware for a long time that certain players are going to be leaving at certain points,” Moody said. “But we’ve got confidence in the depth of our squad, that we can fill those vacancies. The balance of our side might look slightly different but we’re comfortable with that as well. At the moment, we’re batting with three world-class batters at the top of the order. When Jonny goes, we may have a slightly different look to our side, which doesn’t mean that we are a weaker side, it just means that we’re a slightly differently balanced side and that we’re approaching the game differently.”

Palace want to sign international striker with 117 career goals – report

Crystal Palace are one of the tamest attacking teams in the Premier League – and could be looking to an international striker to resolve their issues in front of goal.

Odsonne Edouard is the team's top scorer right now with six goals, and after that, Michael Olise (five) is the only player to have bagged more than three. Centre-back Joachim Andersen (two) has scored as many goals as Palace's second-most prolific forward, Jean-Philippe Mateta.

And with more than half the season gone, the Eagles have scored just 22 goals – only Burnley (21) and Sheffield United (15) have netted fewer. If Palace can't improve their output, they could soon be joining them, with their cushion over the bottom three a mere five points. They only scored 40 times last season too, so this is very much a lasting problem that must be addressed.

All this is to say that it's absolutely no surprise that Palace are in the market for a new number nine, with a fresh target now emerging for Roy Hodgson.

Palace and Forest want Cordoba

According to reports in Colombia (via Sport Witness), Palace are interested in Jhon Cordoba, who currently plays for Russian outfit FC Krasnodar. He's apparently on a shortlist of options drawn up "to reinforce the attack" at Selhurst Park this month.

Nottingham Forest, who are also under threat of relegation, are in the race too, but it's not clear at this stage whether Cordoba is ready to pack his bags and move to England before the end of the window.

Premier League warning could scupper deal

Formerly of Espanyol, Granada, Mainz, Cologne and Hertha Berlin, Cordoba has been settled in Krasnodar since the summer of 2021. He's surpassed a century of career goals during his time in Russia (117, to be precise), and is into double figures for this season (11) to go along with four assists.

He's joint-second in the Russian Premier League goal charts with eight goals (none of them penalties), and also ranks fourth for total shots (46), which shows that he can generate plentiful opportunities through the quality of his movement. This kind of No 9 play will be valuable to a Palace side who are currently without chief playmaker Olise, who leads the squad for both key passes (2.67) and expected assists (0.32) per 90 minutes.

Michael Olise

Cordoba is also the most-fouled player in the division this season, which suggests that defenders are very much struggling to stop him by fair means. His form in recent months has earned him a first call-up to the Colombia national side, and he'll now hope to feature at Copa America in the United States during the summer.

One potential issue with this deal is that the Premier League intends to do what it can to discourage clubs from doing business with Russian teams amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The top sides in the country have been prevented from taking part in UEFA competition, and so there may be dissenting voices both inside and outside the club if Palace are seriously considering paying Krasnodar millions for one of their assets.

Tony Palladino bowls Derbyshire back into the match with 3 for 3

Visitors bowled out for 139 but 35-year-old seamer puts them back on track

Tony Palladino bowled his side back into the match after Derbyshire had been dismissed for just 139 in their County Championship match against Leicestershire at the Fischer County Ground.Veteran seamer Palladino ended the day having taken three wickets and conceded only three runs from nine overs of medium-paced swing bowling, ensuring a remarkable day’s cricket finished roughly even. He was following the example of Leicestershire’s quartet of seamers, who had earlier taken full advantage of the cloudy conditions.Mohammad Abbas took 3 for 38 and Chris Wright 3 for 39, while Dieter Klein and Will Davis took two wickets apiece on a pitch which, while offering occasional slight assistance to the bowlers, was far from the minefield the scores might suggest.Billy Godleman and fellow opener Luis Reece were made to work for every run by the accuracy of Abbas and Wright, but having seen off Abbas, the visitors lost their first wicket when Klein swung a quick delivery back into Reece and won a leg before decision.Godleman followed without another run being added, edging Wright low to first slip where Paul Horton held the catch. The Leicestershire skipper held his second catch when Davis found the edge of Middlesex loanee Tom Lace, and soon afterwards Abbas got the reward his earlier efforts had deserved when Alex Hughes edged an outswinger to wicket-keeper Lewis Hill. There was hope for Derbyshire in the form shown by Wayne Madsen, the experienced right-hander stroking eight boundaries in going to an unbeaten 39 at lunch, but he lost partner Harvey Hosein soon after the break, leg before to a full, straight delivery from Wright before himself being given leg before to an Abbas delivery that seamed sharply back.Matt Critchley was caught chest-high by Colin Ackermann at second slip off Abbas, Anuj Dal held at the second attempt by Harry Dearden at third slip off a full delivery from Wright, and Palladino clipped Davis straight to Hassan Azad at square leg before Ravi Rampaul top-edged an attempted hook at Klein to Wright at long leg.Leicestershire’s batsmen fared no better, however. Horton was unfortunate, under-edging a wide delivery from Palladino on to his off-stump, but Ateeq Javid was palpably leg before to a straight delivery before Mark Cosgrove edged a Reece ball that bounced more than he expected low to first slip.Ackermann’s dismissal, leg before playing across the line to Palladino, came shortly before bad light ended play seven overs early, a further ten overs having been lost earlier to showers.

Leeds in "very advanced talks" to hijack Southampton deal for 26 y/o player

Whilst Leeds United are yet to commence their January transfer business, the Whites have been linked with a number of players and could now finally land Daniel Farke's first reinforcement of the month.

Leeds transfer news

Still eyeing a push to leapfrog Southampton and Ipswich Town in the race to secure an automatic promotion place, though they currently sit seven points adrift in the Championship, Leeds could turn towards the January window for crucial reinforcements.

Among those who could arrive is Luton Town left-back Ryan Giles or Liverpool's Calvin Ramsay as Farke looks to add to his full-back options following the termination of Djed Spence's loan deal at Elland Road and Luke Ayling leaving for Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Wilfried Gnonto could also be heading for the exit door to end a campaign to forget in the Championship. Reports suggest that the winger could be on his way to West Ham United, with Burnley's Manuel Benson identified as a priority replacement. Gnonto's summer transfer request amid reported interest from Everton failed to result in a move, but it looks as though there's a chance the Italian finally gets his departure this month.

If the winger does leave, however, then Farke may need to find a replacement, and that could come in the form of Benson, with a new transfer development emerging in the last 24 hours.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Leeds are now in "very advanced talks" to sign Benson on loan from Burnley for the remainder of the season after new discussions on Saturday morning. Despite initial reports indicating that Southampton had agreed a loan fee of over £1m with Burnley to sign Benson, Leeds are now seemingly in the driving seat to land the winger after the Saints' talks stalled.

Manuel Benson

Hijacking the move, the 49ers Enterprises look set to get one over on their promotion rivals off the pitch in a deal that could quickly prove to make a similar impact on the pitch in the second half of the season.

"Aggressive" Benson can make difference for Leeds

If Gnonto's stats are anything to go by, one goal and one assist this season, then it's fair to say that some may not mind him leaving, providing the fee is the right one. Benson's Championship stats, meanwhile, prove that he is more than capable of doing the job that the Italian has never quite managed to do, especially under Farke.

Whilst helping Burnley win the Championship last season though, Benson's numbers highlight a player who is capable of playing a vital role in England's second tier. The winger scored 12 goals and assisted a further three in the Championship during the last campaign. Journalist Josh Bunting is certainly a fan of the 26-year-old, posting on X in the early stages of last season:

Now, Leeds could benefit from a player hoping to rediscover that form in a campaign that could yet see the Yorkshire club make a sensational comeback to secure automatic promotion.

Crystal Palace interested in "intense" 3-4-2-1 manager to replace Hodgson

Crystal Palace once again find themselves at a dangerous crossroads under Roy Hodgson. With the Eagles out of form and the fans beginning to turn on the veteran manager, Steve Parish could now turn to a replacement who's yet to try his hand in the Premier League.

Next Crystal Palace manager

Whilst Hodgson is still in charge, three wins in 18 games doesn't exactly scream job security and Palace's recent 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion could prove to be the end of his second spell in charge. The former Liverpool boss came under scrutiny for his decision to bring on Michael Olise when Palace were already 3-0 down to Brighton, before their star man suffered a lengthy injury.

With that said Palace have already reportedly spoken to both former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui and former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper over the potential role, though both have reservations about taking over in the middle of the season. What's more, according to Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail, Crystal Palace hold an interest in Oliver Glasner.

Wolves boss Juluen Lopetegui

Glasner's last managerial role was at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he spent two years and won the Europa League in the 2021/22 season. Since leaving the Bundesliga club last summer, the Austrian has been without a job.

As Palace continue to consider Hodgson's future, Glasner could be an ideal alternative option to choose from, should those at Selhurst Park miss out on the likes of Cooper and Lopetegui.

"Intense" Glasner could be perfect alternative

Although Cooper and Lopetegui both have the benefit for Premier League experience, Glasner would bring the anticipation of the unknown when it comes to English football. The former Frankfurt man certainly has plenty of credentials to back up his ability too – not least his Europa League win two seasons ago. He earned several fans in Germany as well, including former RB Leipzig manager Marco Rose.

Glasner's preferred formation of 3-4-2-1 would be an interesting change from Hodgson's 4-3-3, with the former Frankfurt manager potentially getting even better form out of Eberechi Eze, who'd be playing a more advanced central role. As things stand, the Palace star slots into a midfield three, which could quickly prove to be limiting when the Eagles become overrun.

So Glasner is certainly an impressive candidate and if the results fail to change under Hodgson, we may get a closer look at his managerial style in the Premier League.
