'They're going to be the next best Hashim Amlas' – Faf du Plessis

The South Africa captain excited to work with the new-look squad that will take on India in a three-match Test series starting tomorrow

Firdose Moonda01-Oct-20190:33

How much have South Africa changed from their last India tour?

South Africa are readying themselves for a new era in Test cricket. Not only is the three-match series against India their first long-format outing of the World Test Championship or their first under the new coaching structure, it is also the first since the retirements of Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn, the last links to the golden generation who were ranked No.1 in the world. But, for captain Faf du Plessis, that signals an opportunity to deliver a statement of intent. And a strong one at that.Watch cricket on ESPN+

India v South Africa is available in the US on Hotstar and ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the three Tests.

“It’s a real good time for me to be involved with a young team,” he said at the pre-game press conference in Visakhapatnam. “There’s a lot of senior players that are out of our system, our leadership group has changed completely, you’ve lost all your experience and those players. But what that does, it’s a new time for growing new leaders in our team. The next best fast bowlers that’s going to come through, they’re going to be the next best Hashim Amlas, so it’s exciting for me to be working with the young guys in the team.”With 58 Test caps to his name, du Plessis is the joint-most senior member of the squad, alongside Vernon Philander. South Africa will look to draw from the experience of Dean Elgar (56 caps) and Quinton de Kock (40 caps) as well, even though de Kock is on his first Test tour to India after being dropped for the 2015 series. Vice-captain Temba Bavuma is the only other batsman to have played Test cricket in India. While all of this leaves presents the picture of a team that may not have enough information about the conditions they will face in the coming weeks, it also means there are fewer memories of the 0-3 series loss from four years ago.”What Test cricket, in general, does to you that if there is a flaw in your game, or if there is something that you’re not quite on top of against an opposition, generally Test cricket exposes that in your game,” du Plessis said. “And obviously, last time we came here as a batting unit, and personally myself, finding it very difficult in tough conditions, and it was a fact that I needed to get better from a defensive technical point of view, to adapt to play in tough conditions.3:15

Maharaj as good as any spinner in the world – du Plessis

“It was really dry back then, the ball spun a lot. As a batting unit, we found it tough, even though we had lots of experience in our team, and now we’ve got a completely different unit, you know. It’s a very, very young-looking batting line-up, so there’s not a lot of baggage that comes with the guys that are on the tour, and they’re also – as most young cricketers are – very motivated and driven to do well in international cricket, and this tour will be no different for them.”ALSO READ: Missing Dale-a in the time of India v South AfricaThose levels of determination run deep and South Africa have prepared extensively for this tour. Several members of the Test squad, such as Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn, Bavuma and Zubayr Hamza, were involved a spin camp in India, followed by an A team tour. South Africa even added local expertise in the form of batting consultant Amol Muzumdar to the backroom staff, which has added a different perspective to their planning.”It’s been really refreshing having some local knowledge in our dressing room,” du Plessis said. “It’s just a different mindset, it’s a different language, it’s different chats that you’re not used to, and that’s really refreshing no matter how many games you’ve played. I’ve enjoyed his time with us, it’s been very short, but already some really good conversations.”ALSO READ : Aiden Markram’s unfinished business in the subcontinentBut now the time for talking is almost up and South Africa have to show what kind of progress, if any, they have made since they last faced India at home. There is very little expectation of anything but another drubbing, which may only spur du Plessis to try to spring a few surprises.”It’s a challenge, but I’ve always been the type of person and character that enjoys the challenge, I think it generally brings the best out of me as a personality and as a character, so it’s one thing you have to look forward to,” du Plessis said. “You can’t look at teams that you’re playing and see that it’s… oh dear, we’re playing against some really strong oppositions. You’ve got to face it head on.”

All 20 Premier League Clubs’ Best Chants & Lyrics

The Premier League is filled with clubs of many different shapes and sizes, but one thing that all 20 teams share is a passion for the game and a real desire to get behind their team, win, lose or draw.

Every club in the top flight has that one song that fans associate with them, from You'll Never Walk Alone for Liverpool to Hi Ho Wolverhampton at Molineux, it really is special.

With that in mind, Football FanCast has created a list featuring the main chant or song for every Premier League club, complete with lyrics.

Arsenal North London Forever

Lyrics: "North London forever,

Whatever the weather,

These streets are our own,

And my heart will leave you never,

My blood will forever,

Run through the stone…"

We're kicking off our list with a chant that booms around the Emirates every matchday.

With the impressive performances on the field this season and the Premier League title well within reach, you can bet that the Arsenal fans will sing this one just that little bit louder from here on in. Taken from Louis Dunford's 'The Angel', Gunners supporters have been belting this anthem out since last season.

Aston Villa Hi Ho Aston Villa

Lyrics (to the tune of Hi Ho Silver Lining): "You're everywhere and nowhere, baby

That's where you're at

You're rollin' down a bumpy hillside

In your hippy hat

"You're flying across the country

And getting fat

You're saying everything is groovy

When your tyres are flat

"And it's Hi Ho Aston Villa!

Anywhere you go, baby

I see your sun is shining

But I won't make a fuss

Though it's obvious…"

This is one that perhaps won't go down well with bitter rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, as both clubs' pre-match and post-match rituals involve singing this at the top of your lungs.

Both sets of fans will argue over who sang it first, but no one really knows the answer.

Bournemouth Boscombe, Back of the Net

Lyrics: "Boscombe,

(Back of the net),

Boscombe,

(Back of the net)…"

Bournemouth aren't exactly blessed with a huge amount of iconic chants, but this song has been around for a long time and is one that the more hardcore fans will recognise and appreciate.

Brentford Hey Jude

Lyrics: "Brentford

Don't make it bad,

Take a sad song and make it better,

Remember to let her into your heart

Then you will start to make it better, better, better, better, ooh.

Na na na,

Na na na na!

Na na na na!

Brentford,

Na na na,

Na na na na!

Na na na na!

Brentford…"

This is, of course, a popular song that was originally sung by The Beatles.

If you ever rock up to the Gtech Community Stadium, you'll be sure to hear this bellowing out before and after matches, win, lose or draw.

Brighton & Hove Albion Sussex By The Sea

Lyrics: "Now is the time for marching, now let your hearts be gay,

Hark to the merry bugles sounding along our way.

So let your voices ring, my boys, and take the time from me,

And I’ll sing you a song as we march along,

Of Sussex by the Sea!

Good old Sussex by the Sea!

Good old Sussex by the Sea!

You may tell them all we stand or fall,

For Sussex by the Sea."

Many football fans perhaps won't look at Brighton as a fanbase with that much passion and aggressiveness, but if you've ever experienced this being bellowed out by 30,000 Seagulls fans prior to kick-off, you may just feel on edge.

Burnley The Burnley Aces

Lyrics: "Oh my lads, you should have seen 'em running,

Running down the Brunshaw road the Burnley boys are coming,

All the lads and lasses, smiles upon their faces,

Running down the Brunshaw road,

To see the Burnley Aces…"

Now, this is a song that's iconic among quite a few fan bases, with each having their own rendition.

However, with Burnley, it can be heard home and away, and fits ever so well with the Brunshaw Road.

Chelsea Blue Is The Colour

Lyrics: "Blue is the colour, football is the game

We're all together, and winning is our aim

So cheer us on through the sun and rain

'Cause Chelsea, Chelsea is our name

Here at the Bridge whether rain or fine

We can shine all the time

Home or away, come and see us play

You're welcome any day…"

This is one of the more iconic songs in the list, and matchdays at Stamford Bridge just wouldn't be the same without it.

Although results haven't exactly gone in favour of the Blues at times in the current campaign, as a player, if you're hearing this as you await kick-off, it'll be sure to get you right up for it.

Crystal Palace Glad All Over

Lyrics: "You say that you love me,

(Say that you love me),

All of the time,

(All of the time),

You say that you need me,

(Say that you need me),

You'll always be mine,

(Always be mine),

And I'm feeling, glad all over,

Yes I'm, glad all over,

Baby I'm, glad all over,

So glad you're mine."

Palace fans have been belting out Beatles hit Glad All Over since the late 60s, when it was performed by The Dave Clark Five – who wrote the song – at Selhurst Park. Now a tradition in south London, it has become a staple of the matchday experience.

Everton Spirit of the Blues

Lyrics: "It’s good news for the blues,

And there’s no more time to lose,

Cos we’re hot on the trail,

And there’s no way we’re gonna fail,

So get your coat on and get moving,

Cos we don’t know the meaning of losing,

So come on come on,

Get down to Goodison Park,

Wooooo.

Everton, we never shone so brightly,

Everton, the spirit of the blues,

Everton, we never shone so brightly,

Everton, the spirit of the blues…"

As far as classic Everton songs go, there aren't many better than the Spirit of the Blues. Kenny Parry wrote the hit 38 years ago with Billy Kinsley in just one sitting.

Fulham We Are Fulham

Lyrics: "We are Fulham,

We are Fulham,

We are Fulham, FFC,

We are Fulham,

Super Fulham,

We are Fulham,

F*** Chelsea!"

Fulham aren't known for their wide array of chants, but this one is simple but effective, with a bit of vulgarity in there for good measure, so parental discretion is advised.

Worth more than Amad: Man Utd will rue letting their "mini Vinicius" leave

When anticipating who could be the potential matchwinner ahead of last weekend's FA Cup thriller versus Liverpool, few would have predicted a certain Amad Diallo to be the man to steal the headlines, with the Ivorian having been on the periphery for much of his time at Manchester United.

And yet, just over three years on from his first and previously solitary goal for the club at home to AC Milan, up stepped the diminutive winger to clinch victory at the death, the former Atalanta man calmly slotting home to send Old Trafford into a frenzy.

Whether that moment of quality is the start of things to come for the 21-year-old with the Red Devils remains to be seen, yet it would be difficult to argue that he has not now cemented himself as a genuine cult hero at the club – not least for his almost comical dismissal in the aftermath of that last-gasp winner.

The problem for Amad is, however, that there is no shortage of attacking talent at United at present, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund all there to contend with, with cementing a regular role in the side easier said than done.

It may be the case that the former Sunderland man has to depart permanently in order to truly thrive, with the case of young Largie Ramazani showcasing the benefits of starting afresh…

Largie Ramazani's time at Man Utd

There will rightly be many reading this asking the question, who?

The promising Belgian isn't exactly a household name for many of a United persuasion, with the 5 foot 6 ace having left the club through the back door back in 2020, after departing on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract.

Largie Ramazani

Previously on the books at Charlton Athletic, Ramazani made the move to Manchester in the summer of 2017, going on to swiftly impress in the club's youth ranks after contributing 12 goals and assists in 30 games at U18 level.

A promotion into the U21 fold also proved fruitful as the fleet-footed ace bagged 11 goals and contributed a further two assists in only 18 outings for the U23 side, with such rampant form culminating in a senior bow in November 2019.

The one-time Anderlecht ace was brought on off the bench during the UEFA Europa League clash with Astana, with then-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielding a side largely full of young debutants – and Jesse Lingard – for that eventual 2-1 loss.

Unfortunately for Ramazani, no more opportunities arose under Solskjaer, and despite the offer of a new deal, he opted to leave on a free, ultimately joining Spanish second-division side Almeria that summer.

Largie Ramazani's current market value

It is fair to say that such a move has paid off handsomely as far as the 23-year-old is concerned, with United perhaps ruing their inability to keep hold of the forward, as well as at having allowed him to depart for nothing.

Since making the move to Spain, the "explosive winger" – as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored 21 goals and registered nine assists in 121 games in all competitions, having enjoyed a particularly fruitful 2023/24 campaign thus far.

Now in his second season in La Liga, the versatile talent – who can operate all across the front line, albeit while typically featuring off the left – has scored three goals and registered five assists in the division, with that tally of eight goal involvements matching what Alejandro Garnacho has achieved in the Premier League this term.

With his "electric pace & acceleration", Ramazani could well have been something of a "counter-attacking weapon" under Ten Hag – as per Kulig – having also been dubbed "The Mini Vinicius" due to his dazzling displays in Spain.

rayan-cherki-vinicius-junior-newcastle-opinion

To be likened to a Real Madrid star who is arguably the "best player in the world" – according to Carlo Ancelotti – is some praise indeed, with that only reinforcing the idea that United have potentially made a hefty mistake.

Such has been Ramazani's rise, the former Belgium U21 international is now said to be worth around €15m (£13m), according to CIES Football Observatory, which is in fact far ahead of the Red Devils' £37m signing, Amad – €5m (£4m).

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Having allowed the current Almeria speedster to move on in the same year in which the club spent big on Amad's capture – prior to his arrival in Manchester in January 2021 – perhaps United could have saved themselves millions by doing more to keep the rising star at Old Trafford instead.

Remember us? Steven Smith and David Warner's Australian homecoming

Sunday’s T20I against Sri Lanka will be the duo’s first international game at home since Cape Town

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide25-Oct-2019Steven Smith shapes to slog sweep an Adelaide net bowler, down on one knee and eyeing off the imagined midwicket boundary. Despite swinging hard, he isn’t close to getting all of it, letting out a frustrated cry as the ball skews up off the top edge and rebounds from the inside of the net.Sunday’s first T20I against Sri Lanka will be another first for Smith on his road back from 12 months out of the game. Not only will this be Smith’s first T20I in more than three years, it will be his and David Warner’s first international match at home since the expiry of their Newlands bans. In both senses, Smith is finding his way, although on the strength of his first net session at Adelaide Oval, the public adulation may return a little more easily than the T20 batting rhythm.”It has been a while [since the last T20I]. My last game was the World Cup in 2016 against India, where Virat [Kohli] took the game away from us,” Smith said. “It’s going to be nice to walk out on Adelaide Oval on Sunday and play a T20 for Australia. They love it down here, you only have to look at the Big Bash crowds that the Strikers get, they come out in numbers, and hopefully it’s no different this Sunday.”I’m pretty relaxed, I’ve been hitting lots of balls and feel really good, so just excited to get started and look forward to hopefully a successful summer.”The perception of Smith’s relative lack of success as a T20I batsman has been driven partly by the greater achievements of others but primarily by absence: both of Smith from the Australian T20I team entirely in recent years, but also the lack of a chance to build some method and thinking through continual match play.Smith is reckoned by the likes of Justin Langer and Tim Paine to be arguably the game’s greatest batting problem solver. He has not had nearly enough recent T20I assignments to test himself.Steven Smith last played a T20I back in the 2016 World Cup•Getty Images

“With the World Cup in about a year’s time there’s an opportunity to have that continuity and I think we’ve seen over the years that the T20 format’s the one where guys have rested a lot and that’ll probably change leading into a World Cup, I dare say,” Smith said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for the 14 guys that have been picked here to have that continuity and try to form a bond together and work towards hopefully all being part of a World Cup.”It starts here this summer, we’ve got six games straight, which I think is really good, and 20-odd games before the World Cup, so an opportunity for guys to work together and gel as one. I haven’t played a T20I for a while, but I’ve still played a lot of T20 cricket and playing in the IPL and things like that. I may not be as strong as some of the other guys. or can hit the ball as far, but I back myself in working the gaps, hitting boundaries and things like that.”It’s a game where you have to be ahead of the game and think on your feet. I usually do that reasonably well, so hopefully I can do that for this team.”As for future captaincy prospects, the question is not allowed to linger too long in the air before Smith swats it away, rather more definitively than his attempted slog sweep a few hours later: “Not on my radar at all. I’m pretty chilled, [Aaron] Finchy and Painey are both doing terrific jobs, so I’m enjoying playing and pretty chilled.”***The Ashes was a low point for David Warner, with Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer getting the better of him•Getty Images

Warner advances down the wicket to Adam Zampa, keeps his head over the ball, and launches it clean and straight, bellowing “yes” as he runs with the shot, and signalling six with both arms raised as he reaches the other end.Given some of his batting travails over the past three months, the sound of a solid connection was more than welcome to Warner, in environs where he has for long felt at home. Adelaide Oval was the ground where he made his very first T20 half-century for New South Wales against South Australia in January 2009, and at which he has subsequently carved out five further centuries while averaging comfortably better than 50 across the three forms of the game combined.”I think that’s one thing that we sort of forget about, what you have done and what you can do and what you’re capable of doing,” Warner said. “You get caught up in everyone saying you’re out of form or you’re not doing as well away from home and whatnot. You’ve just got to try and… that external noises, just don’t let it get into your head. Negative thoughts are a very, very bad driver in anyone’s mind, so you’ve got to keep being positive and don’t buy into that.”Warner’s words were the fruit of time out following a grim Ashes tour, the low point of a winter that had also featured strong performances in the IPL and then at the ODI World Cup. There was a sense that, for all his smiling visage, the constant baiting of English crowds, added to some outstanding bowling from Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer, had taken their toll.”We knew what we were going to tackle over there and what we were going to face, it was about keeping a smile on your face and not letting anyone rattle you,” Warner said. “Go back six or seven years and it probably would have rattled me, but this time you know what you’re going to expect when you go there, the English team say the same thing when they come to Australia. So for us it’s about focusing on the task ahead, playing good cricket and scoring runs.”Asked whether he had been afforded enough time to recover between a late English summer Ashes and an Australian international season beginning as early as October, Warner referred to the extended break enforced in the wake of Cape Town. “I had a long time off in the past year, which was great mentally,” he said, “and then coming back into it you forget how busy you actually are. But that’s all about trying to stay as fresh as you can mentally.”Take your mind away from the game when you’re not playing, and try to find gaps in your schedule to actually get away from the game a little bit. For me it’s family, that’s one thing I really, really love. You go away from work, you put your tools down, and you just chill out, be quiet. For me it’s about spending time with my family, doing the normal father things that you do and be a husband. That’s what I do and for us you don’t pick up a bat.”You’re only going to mentally cook yourself by going back into the nets if you’re trying to refresh. For me it’s about putting down the tools and focusing on other things.”Picking the tools back up in the T20Is will also allow Warner to think about something other than how to cover his off stump against Broad, and after the year he’s had, a few switch-hits might be just the thing he needs. “It wouldn’t be my game plan if I wasn’t playing those shots,” he said. “I won’t be reverse-sweeping the fast bowlers, but I’ll be going out there and doing what I do best and that’s try to put on a good start for the team and obviously put on a good show for the spectators.”Spectators who, on Sunday, will see Smith and Warner in Australian colours for the first time in more than 18 months.
