Tom Banton kickstarts globetrotting winter with 80 off 28 balls

England starlet sticks to “what I’m good at” in competition’s fastest half-century

Tom Banton launches one into the night sky•Abu Dhabi T10

In the coming years, it will likely be difficult to recall a time when Tom Banton was not lighting up franchise leagues the world over; lapping, scooping, reversing, driving and hooking bowlers to the end of their wits. The 2019 Vitality Blast, in which he was the second-highest run-scorer (549), proved Banton’s breakout tournament and promised a future filled with both runs and riches. Barely a game went by without drool-inducing highlight reels of Banton and Somerset opening partner Babar Azam taking apart opposition attacks.ALSO READ: Banton lights up Blast and attracts franchise interestIt earned him an eight-game deal in Australia’s Big Bash League and England honours against New Zealand, in what feels like the start of a special career for the 21-year-old. But it is here, at the Abu Dhabi T10, that Banton’s pending globe-trot has begun and if his performances so far are anything to go by, it will indeed be the start of something special.Banton, who wants to eventually play all three formats for England, already had an unbeaten 53 from 28 balls in the win over Northern Warriors to his name before a stunning broadcast of his 360 degree range in victory over Karnataka Tuskers. The Qalandars opener bludgeoned a man-of-the-match 80 from only 28 balls, an innings that included nine fours and six sixes to keep his side in the competition.Having departed with 13 balls remaining in the innings, Banton at one stage was well set to become the first centurion in the tournament’s history having returned to playing his natural game, rather than being caught up in “muscling” balls out the ground.”That’s probably where I’ve struggled here,” Banton told ESPNcricinfo the day prior to registering the fifth highest score in Abu Dhabi T10 history. “I’ve seen other players smacking it 100 metres and I’ve kind of forgot what I’m good at and that’s probably not muscling it out of the ground because that’s probably not an area of strength for me so [I need to] just remember what I’m good at and what got me here.”He did just that on Thursday night in a rollocking innings reminiscent of those that have turned Banton into a potential trump card for England going into back-to-back ICC T20 World Cups over the next two years. And Banton admits his catapulting success this summer, including the three T20I outings in England’s series win over the Black Caps at the start of November, makes for a “weird” year. Things could have been so different for Banton, who returned to Taunton ahead of the new season following a winter with South Perth in Australia that was far from enjoyable from a cricketing perspective.”At the beginning of the year, I’d never have thought this would’ve happened,” Banton explained. “I would’ve been happy to play a few first team games, got a few scores but I think once you get on a roll in cricket you kind of can’t stop really. I haven’t looked back since.”Quite.Banton’s quick hands, mastery of the reverse and background in hockey draw parallels to Jos Buttler, AB de Villiers and Eoin Morgan in terms of their shared transition of stick skills as well as their ability to find the boundary all round the park. And Banton’s partnership with Babar at the top of the Somerset order has led to some highlight reel. Not only that, it seemingly spurred Lahore Qalandars COO Sameen Rana, who is also CEO of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise’s T10 offshoot Qalandars, to draft the Englishman.”Sameena, our owner for the Qalandars team, told me that he was getting messages galore before this saying to pick me,” said Banton, who describes Babar as “the best player I’ve ever seen.””Obviously they love cricket over there so it’s obviously great to have a lot of people rooting for you to do well so it’s nice to see.”

“Fear the worst” – Journalist worried by Rangers star’s latest injury

Journalist Chris Jack admits Rangers may need to "fear the worst" regarding one injured Ibrox hero, with a spell on the sidelines potentially coming his way.

Rangers injury news

The Gers are gunning for Scottish Premiership title glory, but injuries are proving to be an obstacle in their way, with some important players unavailable at the moment.

Danilo is a long-term absentee for Rangers, having been out since December, which no doubt played a part in Philippe Clement deciding to bring in Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves during the January transfer window.

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

He is far from the only player that Clement is unable to call upon currently, however, with midfielder Kieran Dowell out since the beginning of the year, and the likes of Oscar Cortes and Todd Cantwell also missing.

Ridvan Yilmaz has now picked up an issue with Turkey as well, adding to the injury pile-up that Rangers are trying to contend with, and it remains to be seen how long he will be unavailable for.

Chris Jack concerned after Yilmaz injury

Speaking on The Rangers Review [via Ibrox News] on Monday, Jack admitted that there should be concern about Yilmaz's injury picked up on international duty.

"It sums up Rangers’ season. Knowing Rangers, that’s him probably done for the season. We don’t know that yet, people are right to fear the worst, Rangers are yet to make a full diagnosis of it.

"We don’t know if he’s out for this weekend or longer term. It would be such a huge blow for Rangers because in the last couple of months, he’s been really impressive and such an important part of the side which has done really well."

Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz.

As Jack alludes to, it would be typical of Rangers' season if Yilmaz ends up not featuring again for the remainder of the season, but the hope is that the injury that forced him off for Turkey is nothing too serious.

Should the 22-year-old be missing for a lengthy period, it will acts as a significant blow for Clement, who has generally seen the Turk as his first-choice left-back this season. He has started 15 of the Gers' Scottish Premiership matches, featuring in another seven games in the competition, whereas Borna Barisic only has 13 outings from the off.

To suddenly only have Barisic to call upon as a strong left-back option would be tough for Rangers, especially with so many big matches coming up in a short space of time during the business end of the season, including four in the space of 14 days in April. Granted, Dujon Sterling has played there once this season, but he isn't a dead cert in the role.

Rangers should unleash 6ft1 star instead of Barisic after Yilmaz injury

Rangers could potentially be without Ridvan Yilmaz for their upcoming matches due to injury

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 25, 2024

The extent of Yilmaz's injury remains to be seen, but finding out if he has a short-term or long-term issue could go a long way towards determining if Clement's men have enough in the tank to go all the way in the league this season.

Journalist: “Incredible” player could be Salah replacement at Liverpool

Journalist Rudy Galetti has name-checked an "incredible" player as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool this summer – one who is enjoying an excellent season.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds focused solely on rebuilding their midfield during last summer's transfer window, having had such issues in the middle of the park in 2022/23, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson not the forces they once were. Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all came in, and the quartet have made a huge difference for Liverpool this time around, ensuring they are firmly in the Premier League title race.

More signings will be needed this summer, however, to give Jurgen Klopp's replacement the opportunity to bring in the ideal players who can suit his system.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Shakhtar

Plenty of players have been linked with moves to Anfield at the end of the season, with Shakhtar Donetsk star Georgiy Sudakov seen as a primary target, having enjoyed a fantastic campaign for his current club, scoring in the Champions League and the Europa League.

Another report has claimed that Liverpool have made an improved offer for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo as they look to seal an eye-catching piece of business. It could be that the Brazilian is viewed as a successor to Salah on the right-hand side of the Reds' attack, with the Egyptian not certain to remain on Merseyside beyond the summer window.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see a number of potential Salah replacements emerge in the coming months, as his future remains up in the air, and one more has been mentioned alongside Rodrygo.

Liverpool want "incredible" Salah replacement

According to Galetti on X, Liverpool see PSV Eindhoven star Johan Bakayoko as a strong option to replace Salah, should the winger move on to pastures new amid persistent links to the Saudi Pro League:

"Salah remains one of the main targets for the Saudi League next season. Al Ittihad and Al Hilal are set to increase the pressure for the [Egyptian] in the coming weeks. Liverpool are already following possible replacements: Johan Bakayoko – among others – is on the list."

Bakayoko is an incredibly exciting talent with a big future in the game, registering 14 goal contributions in 22 Eredivisie appearances this season. At just 20 years of age, the Belgian should only become a more prolific supplier of end product as he matures as a player, and he possesses Salah's penchant for cutting onto his left foot from the right wing.

Someone who thinks very highly of Bakayoko as a player is star Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku, who has described him as "incredible", saying:

"He's understanding the importance of numbers in the game. His assist and goal tallies are increasing, bringing him into the spotlight. I've told him how incredible I find his play, and if he continues merging his creative flair with his scoring record, he's on track to become a top-tier player. His potential knows no bounds. I sincerely think he has what it takes to surpass me in the long run."

David Ornstein "sure" Liverpool have held talks with "incredible" manager

He could make a splash at Anfield were he to arrive this summer.

ByBen Browning Mar 29, 2024

Perhaps the ideal outcome would be to see Salah stay put and Bakayoko arrive as his backup this summer, meaning Liverpool have a successor in place who can gradually oust the Reds legend over time as he drifts past his peak.

'I've got to get away from cricket, or else it captures my whole life'

Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc and Justin Langer on mental health

Daniel Brettig20-Nov-2019’I’ve got to get away from cricket, or else it captures my whole life’Pat Cummins: I can only speak for myself but it’s hugely important for me. With cricket, being on tour, it isn’t just individual tours, it’s basically our life. We spend 10-11 months of the year on the road, so when I’m touring I’ve got to get away from cricket, or else it captures my whole life. When I can get little breaks I do, and those four weeks were great for me to step away from cricket, not really watch cricket, just live a normal life, have a normal routine, because I don’t think I could do it for 10-15 years just with 12 months of the year all focused on cricket. Other guys might be different, they may play a little bit more, a little bit less. But for me as important as being really focused at training and games is trying to switch off and change my focus to something else every now and then. The last 12 months JL’s been really good at trying to identify breaks where we can. I’ve heard him say a few times ‘I wish I could give you guys a longer break but we’ll have to delay that’. It’s a general conversation. For me the priority’s obviously international cricket and I want to maximise as much international cricket as I can. We try to look through the diary between JL, the support staff and myself and try and map out a plan. But the priority after the Ashes, the non-negotiable, was to have a few weeks off bowling and then the conversation’s around ‘okay, how does that look in terms of games I’m going to miss, how long can we extend that break, can we get it out to four weeks’, so it’s a general conversation between all of us.Steven Smith: I think that’s something that we’re getting a lot better at. Communication with the coach, relevant people that are involved who we can have those honest conversations with about how we’re tracking. It is a pretty hectic schedule nowadays. It’s bloody tough to sustain it for long periods of time, particularly I think for the fast bowlers. It’s extremely difficult what they put themselves through. It’s great that those conversations are happening and we’re trying to keep guys as mentally and physically fresh as they can be.Tim Paine chats with Justin Langer•Getty Images

‘The biggest improvement since I started is the amount of support’Smith We fill out daily how we’re feeling, how we slept … the sleep gets a big red every now and again. We fill out a wellness thing every day. The coach and psych and head of team performance look at our markers daily and it’s upon us to be honest in the way we go about that as well. They can see how we’re tracking and if there’s a change in behaviour, if you’re feeling ill or not sleeping well or feeling a bit off, they’re aware of it. That can sort of start a conversation. Why’s your sleep bad? What’s going on? Why are you feeling a bit off today? It’s good that they do that. It’s good for guys’ mental health and wellbeing.Cummins Lloydy [Australian team psychologist Michael Lloyd] has just about been full-time on tour for the last few years. Lloydy’s brilliant, I’ve known him since 17 or 18 years old and he’s always on tour, if he isn’t he might be away for a week or two, but there’s definitely times where I pick up the phone and speak to him about different things. We’ve got great staff, through the ACA, the player development officers around the states, everyone’s got good contacts with them. That’s probably the biggest improvement I’ve seen since I first started was the amount of support you have around. It’s still up to the player sometimes to pick up the phone and pick up that conversation, but we’re lucky how many resources we have and always trying to optimise that. We get asked about it a lot, how we want it to look like and how we can make improvements. I think if it’s three or four negative things, it goes [from the wellness app] to a group of people and that might have the physios, coaches, mental health, psychologists, and whatever it is, that normally instigates a conversation with the player.ALSO READ: ‘Shows incredible courage to talk about mental health”The only opinions who matter are the ones close to me and the team’Mitchell Starc: I got off social media. Getting older and going through all that the last 12 to 18 months I have been mindful about being pretty level. In terms of opinions, the only ones who matter are the ones close to me and the team. Going in and out of the team early in my career and going through that as a young cricketer [helped me]. The game has changed since I started. Social media stuff comes into it. We have two broadcasters now so there are more demands on the players. Guys are reading and taking note of more opinions now as well. I can only speak for myself but that is what helped me most over the past 18 months was not caring what people think and not reading it and taking that away from my lifestyle and it’s been a lot clearer and a lot more positive.Pat Cummins claims another scalp•Getty Images

‘Having something else in my life it would have alleviated some of the pressure I put on myself’Tim Paine: It can be difficult [to have perspective] and I think it comes as well with experience. I think it’s something you do need to go through at times to come out of it with that knowledge and know-how. I look now at that period of time where I was out injured or I was really struggling now as a real positive in my life, not only in my career. I think it’s made me a much better person. I think obviously going back to when I was 16 or 17 I wish I knew what I knew now and I would have been a lot better at school, because I think having something else in my life it would have alleviated some of the pressure I put on myself to perform. It would have allowed me to go out and play a little bit more fearlessly which I would have loved to be able to do but I’ve never allowed myself to do because I’ve always had all my eggs in one basket. It was a difficult time, but in the end it’s turned out to be a real positive. Cummins: It was really difficult [battling injuries at a young age]. Probably looking back I now realise how much more difficult it was than when I was going through it for the first time – I was a little bit naive. The most obvious example was that every single summer of my life I’d played cricket and suddenly I was a professional cricketer but I was spending my summers not playing cricket, and I just wanted to do what I love doing. I try to keep realising that while I wasn’t playing, I was hanging out with my mates, I was going to the cricket ground and training, so there was a life as a cricketer I was still able to have and Cricket Australia were brilliant with New South Wales, the support staff especially who were my main contact in cricket. They were the ones who kept me motivated and instilled patience in me for those couple of years.’Health is much more important than another game of cricket’Justin Langer: I’ve learned a lot over however long I’ve been coaching. I’m dealing with young men all the time, so hopefully I’ve got a pretty good feel for how guys are going. But it’s a complex issue – it’s like concussion. There’s a really clear protocol on concussion now and I’m really hopeful, in a really complex matter of mental health, that we can get to a point where there’s really clear protocols and there’s no stresses about it, there’s no indignity in saying ‘I’m not okay’.And then we work out how guys can return to play, whether it’s in the shorter term or in the longer term. I’m sure that’s what we’re all searching for, to make sure that we get that protocol right. I said it one of our players today, at the end of the day the health of our players and the wellbeing is much more important to me than another game of cricket. We saw it with Steve Smith – we would have loved Steve Smith to play the third Test of the Ashes, of course. But it was so clear that he wasn’t right, it was an easy decision. We lost a tough game but it was a no-brainer, and I hope we can get to that point with mental health as well.

Silk, Vince fire Sydney Sixers to second spot

Last season’s champions Melbourne Renegades have now lost five in five

Daniel Brettig02-Jan-2020James Vince and Jordan Silk guided Sydney Sixers home to a tight victory over Melbourne Renegades on a slow surface at Docklands. Aaron Finch’s men have now lost their fifth consecutive match after winning the Big Bash League last season. With an innings that saw Sam Harper excel at the start and Dan Christian finish off effectively – between them taking Tom Curran for 1 for 58, the third-most expensive BBL figures ever – the Renegades thought they had enough runs to defend.James Vince is quite fluent through the off side•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

However Josh Philippe and Daniel Hughes gave the Sixers a sturdy start, and after a wobble in the middle, Vince and Silk were able to find the boundaries they required to scramble home. The win took the Sixers up to second on the BBL table with four wins from six matches.Harper 1, Curran 1On what has traditionally been a slow and sluggish Docklands drop-in pitch, Harper has made a name for himself with a series of quick burst starts to give Renegades the push. After Aaron Finch unfurled one handsome cover drive and then completely miscued an attempt to take a Jackson Bird outswinger over mid-off, Harper came into his own by targeting the ground’s shorter square boundaries – his diminutive height tending to open up more opportunities for the cut shot than for most. The prime target of Harper’s attack was Tom Curran, who in his first over dropped obligingly into Harper’s scoring zones and soon found himself nursing figures of 0 for 22 from his first over. It was a six-ball sequence that allowed Renegades to manage 57 from their powerplay, providing Shaun Marsh with the platform to launch. Curran, though, would benefit from a tighter line to cramp Harper, who maintained his habit of a cameo innings, when he shovelled a jamming full toss to midwicket.Christian 1, Curran 0Marsh’s innings, which promised a payoff for all the early investment, fizzled out to nothing when an attempted slog sweep could only find Moises Henriques at long on. This after Lloyd Pope had struck twice to remove Marcus Harris and Beau Webster, the latter perhaps unluckily lbw to a googly that may well have missed leg stump. This meant that Harper’s fast start was in danger of being squandered. But just as Harper has topped a few Renegades innings, Christian has tailed plenty of them all over the world. While Will Sutherland struggled to make contact at the other end, Christian rounded on Curran’s final over, finding boundaries to fine leg, third man, cover and then a thumping six over straight midwicket to the Englishman’s final ball. Curran was left with figures of 1 for 58, Christian with a huge penultimate over for the Renegades, and the hosts with a defendable tally. Curran’s analysis was the third most expensive in BBL history, behind only the 59 conceded by Thisara Perera also at Docklands in 2017, and 60 by Dan Worrall at the MCG in 2014.Philippe’s foundationIn their opening unions so far Philippe and Hughes have rather contradicted the conventional wisdom that Philippe is the dasher and Hughes the accumulator. On this occasion, both the Sixers openers looked to be settling in for as long as possible, and they steadily built up the visitors’ chase at a tick over six an over with the occasional boundary. When Andrews was introduced and took a wicket with his first ball as a Renegade – a half-tracker that stayed low and was on its way down to a second bounce when it reached Philippe – the Sixers were well placed.Their platform soon looked somewhat shakier, however, as Hughes fell to Cameron Boyce when he picked out Marsh on the boundary, and Andrews skidded a straight delivery through Moises Henriques’ attempt at an imposing sweep shot to his third ball. The Renegades looked, for a time, to be cornering the Sixers into the sort of position from which they won many of the matches in 2018-19 that took them all the way to victory in the BBL final.Vince sets up, Silk finishes Given how hard it can be to time the ball at Docklands, the Renegades could have been forgiven for thinking they were favoured to finally win their first match of the tournament. But that was to reckon without Vince, who showcased his tendency to sweet timing in challenging circumstances to nail 41 from just 26 balls and score the majority of 57 runs made while he was at the crease.Of course, it would not have been a Vince innings without his departure just as the job looked to be done, and he left Silk with a still tricky scenario given how effective slower balls could be. He was able to take after Vince’s timing, however, lacing a first flat six over cover to the audible distress of Finch, who could be heard asking out loud why Shaun Marsh was not fielding right on the boundary rope where he might have taken a catch. And in the final over, Silk lined up a Richard Gleeson cutter for the six that effectively ended the contest. The Renegades’ drought goes on.
