BCCI 'optimistic' over prospects for IPL this year

CEO Rahul Johri says Indian players will be given freedom to decide on their safety

Nagraj Gollapudi21-May-2020

All efforts will be made to stage the IPL this year•BCCI

The BCCI will give freedom to the Indian players to decide for themselves whether to return to play as and when cricket restarts in the country. That is the assurance given by Rahul Johri, the BCCI chief executive, who said player safety would be given “paramount importance”. Johri also said the board remained “optimistic” about the IPL taking place after the Indian monsoons subject to clearance from the federal government. The IPL was postponed indefinitely by the BCCI in April in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic which put the world in a lockdown. This week, the Indian government, while extending the lockdown in the country until May 31, said sporting facilities and stadiums could re-open but behind closed doors. However, the directive, issued by the Indian Ministry of Health, also said that sports gatherings would not be allowed thus leaving a question mark over when sport would be safe to return.ALSO READ: Cricket’s comeback from Covid-19: the state of the gameReacting to the government’s directive, Arun Dhumal, the BCCI treasurer, said that the board would continue to wait for restrictions to be eased further before asking players at all levels to return to training. Dhumal also said that the BCCI would not “jeopardise” the situation by rushing the players back and endangering their safety.Johri, who recently got an extension from BCCI by a year (until March 2021), echoed similar sentiments. “Safety of every individual is of paramount importance and every individual has the right to decide on their safety and one should respect that,” Johri said during a webinar organised on Wednesday by Twenty First Century Media.According to Johri it was also far too early to get excited about the IPL. “Our approach is to keep watching the situation. We are going to be guided by the Government of India in its entirety, whatever are the government guidelines is what we’ll follow. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves on anything and that is why if you’ve seen the BCCI advisory, it says cricket is suspended till further notice. And we are engaging with various agencies on a continuous basis.”Indian players have been forced to stay indoors since mid-March when the first phase of lockdown commenced. India’s next international assignment scheduled is in July with a limited-overs series in Sri Lanka. Dhumal had said although Sri Lanka Cricket was keen to host the Indians, unless domestic flights resumed in India, it was too early to predict the fate of that tour. The Indian government announced on Wednesday that domestic flights would operate gradually from May 25.0:54

Virat Kohli: The magic of playing in front of a live audience will be missed

Johri said any talk about resuming cricket in the India could only happen after the monsoons, which usually last at least until the end of September. “Cricketing activity in earnest can start practically only after the monsoon season. That is a window…hopefully things will improve and give us more variables which we can control and accordingly take the decision.”Keeping in mind the lockdown restrictions imposed by various countries, Johri was asked whether the IPL could take place with predominantly Indian players. He said the tournament could not take place without overseas names. “The flavour of the IPL is that the best players around the world come and play, and everyone is committed to maintaining that flavour. Of course, it is going to be a step-by-step process, so you cannot expect normalisation tomorrow.ALSO READ: How are cricketers keeping fit in lockdown?”We need to wait for the overall environment to become conducive. We need to factor what the government advisories will be. Right now there are no flights. At some point flights will open and everybody needs to quarantine themselves before playing. How will that impact the schedules because as it is the schedules are extremely tight.”Just imagine if you add 14-day quarantine prior to you starting practice also what impact that has on schedules. So there are a lot of moving parts. Having said that we stay optimistic. Hopefully the situation post the monsoon will improve and we approach it that point of time.”Johri also touched on how the pandemic would disrupt the world’s busiest domestic cricket calendar. There are more than 2000 matches orgainsed across different age groups in both women’s and men’s cricket with several tournaments spread across the densely packed Indian home season which usually begins in October and stretches until end of May.”Domestic cricket is the bedrock of Indian cricket,” Johri said. “What people don’t realise is we conduct over 2000 games in a six-month season of domestic cricket. In this changing scenario the scheduling of domestic cricket needs to be completely relooked at because today there is a team which can travel 50 kilometres to play a match or 3000 kilometres to play a match. Everybody plays every other team home and away. Now in this scenario where travel is restricted, where players’ safety, support staff safety is of paramount importance, how do you conduct these leagues? It is a discussion that will be had and interesting options will have to come up. Innovation will be the key in this.”

Sheffield Wednesday must ditch forward who is worth 2x Windass’ value

Sheffield Wednesday will hope, when next season comes around and a first ball is kicked, that Danny Rohl is still occupying his position as manager in the Hillsborough dug-out.

Wednesday supporters will know that there's no guarantee that the South Yorkshire side will be the most stable club over the off-season, with Darren Moore's fractious relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri resulting in the promotion-winning boss being given the boot last summer, and so they will just pray for a more subdued and quiet environment this time around with the German hopefully staying put.

There is bound to be change when it comes to who is playing on the pitch for the Championship outfit, however, with a number of the troops at Rohl's disposal currently uneasy over their futures owing to their contracts running down.

Away from the likes of Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer not yet putting pen to paper on an extension, Michael Smith could be heading for the exit door – even with his current deal being in place until 2025 – with the Owls wanting to profit on their previously prolific centre-forward before it's too late.

Michael Smith's bright start at Sheffield Wednesday

Heading into this Championship campaign, off the back of the most dramatic promotion stories under Moore, many would have expected in South Yorkshire that Smith would be the main talisman up top to lead Wednesday back into the second tier and fire in the goals.

The prolific attacker at League One level would live up to his reputation for the Owls in that division, bagging 17 goals in the league for the eventual promotion-chasers which would take his total in the third tier across his esteemed career to an impressive 75 overall.

Having had to cut his teeth at a number of League One sides, before coming into his own in the division under Paul Warne at Rotherham and then further with Wednesday, Smith must have been overjoyed at the prospect of establishing himself as a feared centre-forward in the division above.

Yet, the narrative hasn't quite gone in Smith's favour with the well-travelled striker looking likely to be moving on again this summer based on his lack of game-time under Rohl.

Smith's season for Wednesday in numbers

The lofty 6 foot 3 striker did initially start this season where he left off in League One for the Owls, netting against Hull City in Wednesday's second game back at the level before haunting his former employers Rotherham with two more strikes at the close of October.

However, since then, the 32-year-old has found his minutes to be fewer and fewer which coincided with Rohl's arrival onto the scene as a fresh face in the dug-out.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

Smith only managed to find the back of the net once more during the entire rest of the campaign with his confidence shot as a sudden fringe figure, the German boss preferring to use the likes of Troyes loanee Ike Ugbo over the ex-Rotherham forward.

Rohl can be excused for wanting to freshen up the striker spot with hindsight now, knowing that the former Chelsea youngster would end up bagging seven goals when making the switch from France to help Wednesday navigate through some tough clashes and continue to pick up hard-fought victories.

To bring an end to his Wednesday nightmare now, Smith could look to get the ball rolling over a move to Derby County again – which nearly happened in January, according to reports – to link back up with his ex-Millers boss in Warne who managed to oversee the richest goalscoring form of his career whilst together at the New York Stadium.

The Owls wouldn't say no to offloading the reserve striker either, knowing that they could still gain a handsome amount of money for the 32-year-old who still boasts a higher worth than Josh Windass in the Hillsborough camp, according to Football Transfers.

Smith's transfer value in 2024

Despite only firing in four strikes during a dismal season from a personal perspective, Smith's valuation is still coming in at a high £944k.

Selling the seasoned striker on for this amount would see the Owls make a healthy profit, considering they managed to strike gold on a free transfer deal for Smith's services back in 2022 at the expense of Rotherham.

Wednesday just won't want to be burnt in a similar manner to the Millers when they lost Smith for nothing two years ago, considering his transfer value would rise to £1.1m just a year into his move to the Owls.

Amazingly, despite his heroics recently in helping his side complete a dramatic escape from relegation, Josh Windass' value sits at a lesser £429k – less than half of Smith's amount – with Rohl and Co no doubt clamouring to sign up the ex-Accrington Stanley man for next season with his contract expiring next month.

Entering into a mini purple patch at the best possible time, by scoring a goal in all of Wednesday's last three league games, Rohl will want the 30-year-old to stick it out at Hillsborough more so than Smith who will be allowed to leave.

Staggeringly, another key member of Rohl's camp in Barry Bannan finds himself being worth the same amount as the striker stuck on the periphery in South Yorkshire all whilst assisting Liam Palmer's crucial opener on the final day to secure safety at the Stadium of Light.

Barry Bannan for Sheffield Wednesday.

It's been a quick decline for Smith, who was one of the first names on the team sheet under Moore's reign and was even described as a "colossal" figure by Warne during his best days at the New York Stadium.

Now, the 32-year-old is merely a bit-part player in his less than welcoming South Yorkshire location and will be seen as a player that can be offloaded now to make some satisfactory profit off of.

Tottenham may re-sign £30 million player who Dele Alli called "fantastic"

Tottenham are now thinking about bringing back a £30 million former player as manager Ange Postecoglou seeks to address a key issue.

Spurs looking to secure defensive depth this summer

The Spurs defence could look slightly different by the beginning of 2024/2025.

The demands of a Postecoglou full-back and centre-back are extremely intense, with defenders required to have a great burst of pace to feature at the heart of Tottenham's high line for the latter position.

Micky van de Ven has been crucial in this regard, and when the Dutchman is unavailable, it really tells. Indeed, both Cristian Romero and van de Ven have formed a phenomenal partnership, for the most part, across 2023/2024. Lately, Spurs have been pretty fragile at the back, but Postecoglou has been adamant his Tottenham side are a work in progress.

Postecoglou quite simply needs star alternatives for when either of the pair, or both, are ineligible for selection. This prompted them to agree a January deal for Radu Dragusin from Genoa for around £25 million, but it is believed Spurs are aiming to bring in another centre-back this summer as well.

They're also in need of alternatives to both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie, who have both played a starring role as Postecoglou's unique inverted full-backs this season.

"The way Tottenham play this season, everybody talks about the spine of the team, but it’s actually the fullbacks who are the most important players,” said pundit Stephen Warnock on The Sky Sports Football Show in February (via HITC).

“And I am made up to say that. It makes me very happy. They change the way that they play. Udogie doesn’t play as a conventional fullback or as an overlapping fullback.

Tottenham players

“Incredibly, I saw an article on this a few weeks ago where he has actually completed the most dribbles in midfield. That tells you everything about the type of player he is and where he is playing on the pitch, so often, you see him and Porro in centre-forward positions or number 10 positions.

“You are thinking, why are you playing there? What’s this trying to achieve? The more that you watch Spurs, the more that you understand it. They are key to the way Tottenham play."

Udogie's season-ending injury really highlights the need for more full-back options, and it is believed Tottenham have their eyes on an interesting target.

Tottenham consider re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters

According to talkSPORT, Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters is on Spurs' radar.

The 27-year-old has been pivotal this season under Russell Martin, and has helped the Saints to a Championship play-off place as they bid for promotion right back to the top flight.

Spurs sold the right-back in 2020, but it is now believed Tottenham are thinking about re-signing Walker-Peters following his excellent season. The defender could cost around £30 million, according to other reports, and was called "fantastic" by Dele Alli during his time at N17.

Allow players without BCCI contracts to play in overseas T20 leagues – Suresh Raina

Playing abroad, he feels, will help older players looking to make international comebacks

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2020

Suresh Raina slams one onto the leg side•BCCI

Suresh Raina feels Indian cricketers without BCCI contracts should get the opportunity to play in overseas T20 leagues. The 33-year-old Raina has played over 300 international games, but hasn’t represented India since July 2018; playing in overseas leagues, he feels, will especially help older players who are looking to make international comebacks.”I hope the BCCI can get together with the ICC or with franchises and allow players who don’t have BCCI contracts to play in overseas leagues,” Raina said in an Instagram Live chat with his former India team-mate Irfan Pathan. “I feel there are a lot of players, including Yusuf [Pathan], myself, Robin Uthappa – a lot of quality players who can go overseas and learn a lot, no matter which league it is. Allow us to play in two [overseas] leagues.”We aren’t in the BCCI contracts list, some of us don’t have IPL contracts, we aren’t playing international cricket, and the competition in domestic cricket isn’t what it is at the international level. If we can get three months of quality cricket, whether it’s the CPL or the Big Bash [League] or any league, it can help us stay ready.”Players from other countries are able to play in these leagues, and a lot of them have made international comebacks after doing well in them. We play the IPL, but if these people [the BCCI selectors] have a pool of 40-50 players, they think those outside it aren’t good enough or are past it, and neglect them. We don’t have a Plan B. If we go overseas and perform, our cricket will improve and we’ll get to learn a lot.”The BCCI has not allowed active Indian players to take part in franchise leagues other than the IPL. Those that have done so – Virender Sehwag in the T10 League, Yuvraj Singh in Global T20 Canada – have only done so after announcing their retirements. Last year, Harbhajan Singh signed up for the draft of The Hundred but eventually pulled out in order to continue playing in the IPL.

Liverpool want to sign £85m ace who’s got "Virgil van Dijk in him"

Jurgen Klopp's departure marks a significant step in Liverpool's history. Away from the poignancy, the pathos and the raw pain of losing the man who transformed an outfit that had fallen by the wayside, the pendulum has swung with far more dramatic and long-lasting overtones.

Michael Edwards, FSG's CEO of Football, heads a new infrastructure that has recently seen a manager leave and a head coach take his place.

The terming of this switch is key: Arne Slot will control the first team and Liverpool's football, its on-pitch performance and progress, but there is little doubt that Klopp's exit has seen the metaphorical flight of managerial power at Anfield.

But that's okay, Liverpool are in good, intelligent hands and there's a tentatively optimistic sense that all the newly-formed facets will dovetail to unleash an institution of lasting synergy and success.

Especially when Edwards appears to be engineering a move for an exciting young defender – who could potentially solve Slot's most pressing early concern.

Liverpool lining up exciting defender

According to French outlet Le Parisien, Liverpool have entered the race for coveted Lille defender Leny Yoro, who may cost as much as €100m (£85m).

The 18-year-old is regarded as one of Europe's foremost young talents and is also attracting interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, with the former having long been admirers.

Lille defender Leny Yoro.

But Carlo Ancelotti's side are set to welcome Kylian Mbappe and Endrick to the Santiago Bernabeu and might not have the means to launch a bid this summer, suggesting that Edwards and co might find success in an incisive swoop for Yoro's signature.

Leny Yoro's season in numbers

Last year, Yoro's high-class performances in Lille's academy saw him prematurely promoted to the senior set-up, completing eight starting appearances in Ligue 1 and leading journalist Zach Lowy to pronounce him as the latest in a "treasure trove of ballers" emerging from Les Dogues' youth ranks.

Tentative steps into the big league saw Yoro earn the confidence and admiration of manager Paulo Fonseca and he is now an essential part of the team's backline, starting 30 times in the French top flight and playing 44 matches in all competitions, scoring three goals.

As per Sofascore, the French teenager featured 32 times in the league this season, bagging twice, keeping 13 clean sheets, completing 92% of his passes, averaging 3.9 ball recoveries and three clearances per game while winning 63% of his contested duels.

His ability is reflected in the quality of his performance against Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League. Lille were defeated on penalties in the quarter-finals but only on penalties, losing 2-1 in England before securing an impressive 2-1 victory at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in the second leg.

Sure, Lille crashed out against one of Europe's most exciting, fast-rising teams in Unai Emery's Villa, but if Yoro's two-legged performance was an audition, he passed with flying colours, winning every single one of his duels across the tie and maintaining superlative control and composure.

Yoro is contracted at Lille for 12 more months and his team will be desperate to ascertain whether he would consider agreeing to fresh terms in the coming months. If not, Yoro's market value would suggest that cashing in this summer would be the prudent move.

How Leny Yoro would fit in at Liverpool

Said to be "world-class material" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, it's easy to forget that Yoro spent the opening few months of the 2023/24 season as a 17-year-old, and spent some time observing him in action, his youthfulness becomes all the more perplexing.

How is the future France star performing with the guileful swagger of a seasoned veteran, tried and tested and draped in illustrious praise? Yoro is simply destined for greatness, and he would be the perfect successor to Van Dijk's throne in the Liverpool defence.

As per FBref, Yoro ranks among the top 7% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, speaking of his technical prowess and composure in the rearguard. He's not, at this primitive stage, very creative, but that's okay, especially given he still has striking similarities to Van Dijk – journalist Antonio Mango noting that he sees "Virgil van Dijk in him"…

Van Dijk, aged 32, is out of contract in 12 months but Liverpool will address this in due course, hopeful to tie their captain down to fresh terms.

He has been utterly imperious throughout the campaign, leading Liverpool's resurgence and holding the backline together despite the incessant injury issues.

In the Premier League, the Netherlands phenom completed 91% of his passes, averaging 4.7 recoveries and 3.9 clearances per game while incredibly winning 76% of his duels.

Yoro's finely wrought array of abilities makes him a real contender for Europe's finest centre-half down the line, and while he would be the perfect player to adopt Van Dijk's presence at Liverpool, signing him this summer could give Slot's system the security it needs to flourish, augmenting a crop containing Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah, but not much else.

Moreover, he could absorb the fruits of the Dutchman's prowess over the next year or two to put him in a brilliant position to forge a career that will live long beyond the day he decides to hang up his boots.
