Anya Shrubsole, Stafanie Taylor star with bat and ball to power Southern Brave

Senior internationals make the difference as Trent Rockets are undone after flying start

Southern Brave 133 for 5 (Taylor 45*, Shrubsole 40*) beat Trent Rockets 110 for 7 (Sciver 44, Shrubsole 4-13) by 23 runsAnya Shrubsole and Stafanie Taylor produced crucial roles with bat and then ball, as Southern Brave recovered from a catastrophic opening gambit to ease to a 23-run victory over Trent Rockets in their opening match of the women’s Hundred at Trent Bridge. The two experienced campaigners shared in an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 76, making 40 not out from 30 and 45 not out from 31 respectively, before chipping in with five wickets between them in their defence of 134, Shrubsole topping and tailing the innings superbly for the game-sealing figures of 4 for 13 in 20 balls.Rockets’ own England stars did their utmost to keep their side competitive, with Nat Sciver top-scoring in the chase with 44 from 29, including a third-wicket stand of 66 with her partner, and fiancée, Katherine Brunt. But when both were extracted in the space of three balls, their challenge fell away.Power goes to Brave’s headsSmriti Mandhana, Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley made for an imposing top three in Southern Brave’s ranks, and on a venue with Trent Bridge’s run-laden reputation, the expectation was for fireworks in the Powerplay … until it all went “splut”.Three dot balls from Brunt to Wyatt set the early tone – and the fourth would have been a run-out had Sammy-Jo Johnson’s throw found the stumps with Wyatt scuttling through for a reckless opening single. But two balls later, and with the first of her own set, Johnson made amends in priceless style. Mandhana lined up a swipe over the short leg-side boundary, but top-edged a steepler for Michaela Kirk to cling on well in the deep.Dunkley, England’s breakthrough star of the India series, drilled Brave’s opening boundary back down the ground, but perished on the drive five balls later, the victim of an exceptional first-time pick-up from Sarah Glenn at mid-off, and a sharp gather from Kathryn Bryce by the non-striker’s stumps. And Brave’s formless Powerplay was capped in Sciver’s first set, when Wyatt followed up a pull for four through square leg with a cramped top-edge to mid-on. The first 25 balls came and went with a scoreline of 17 for 3, and Rockets had grabbed an early stranglehold.Anya Shrubsole struck early in the chase•Getty Images

Taylor, Shrubsole pick up the pieces
Fortunately for Brave, the power in their line-up wasn’t limited to the top three. In Taylor, West Indies’ T20 World Cup-winning captain, and Shrubsole – England’s 2017 World Cup hero, albeit with the ball – there was oodles of seen-it-all experience lurking down their order. And they need all of it, as the wickets kept slipping away – Maia Bouchier threatened for a time with three forceful boundaries before a leading edge to cover off Sarah Glenn, and Amanda-Jade Wellington never got going in her 5 from nine balls. But from 57 for 5 after 55 balls, Taylor and Shrubsole racked up 76 unbeaten runs from the final 45, to set up an eminently defendable total. After staying watchful in the Powerplay, Taylor raised her tempo mid-innings, including a vast, swept six over midwicket off Glenn. But she was starved of the strike thereafter, facing just five deliveries between balls 43 and 71, and it was Shrubsole who signalled Brave’s late charge, taking ten off Bryce’s third set of five including a brace of cover drives, before a slap over wide long-on for six after picking Sciver’s slower ball. She continued her assault on Glenn with two more fours in her final five, before Taylor showcased her sense of timing at the death, denting Brunt’s exceptional figures with two thumps through backward square to finish unbeaten on 45 from 31.Rockets explode in Powerplay
Four, out, four, out, four. With a single in between whiles, Rockets launched their chase with an unsubtle opening gambit. Rachel Priest fell to a fourth-ball slog as Anya Shrubsole gained revenge for her earlier clout through square leg, while Lauren Bell dispatched Sammy-Jo Johnson with her own third delivery, having just been slammed over the covers. But Brunt arrived with a dismissive slap for four through point, and when Sciver followed a snick past the keeper for four with three more conventional boundaries in a row off Tara Norris, it seemed the tone of the chase had been established. But Shrubsole closed out the Powerplay by conceding just two more runs, and when Bell returned with three from five of her own, the tempo suddenly changed …Wellington’s five-ball maiden
Flight, loop, guile and turn… it was all on display as Amanda-Jade Wellington entered the fray with her legbreaks, and had Brunt in knots as she struggled and failed to counter her overspin. Wellington duly became the first bowler in Hundred history to serve up a “maiden” (the Sky commentators seem to think that terminology still exists even if “over” has been outlawed) and was instantly handed a second set to keep up the pressure. Brunt and Sciver scuffed a succession of singles to break the immediate stranglehold but only five runs from ten balls was an outstanding handbrake to Rockets’ mid-innings momentum.Pace off the ball was clearly the way to go, especially against the hard-heaving Brunt, who had struggled to 16 from 24 balls at the halfway mark of the chase, at which point the requirement was a stiff but obtainable 83 from 50. Sciver threatened to make it look insubstantial when she climbed into Stafanie Taylor with three fours in five, including a powerful reverse-sweep to disrupt her ploy of bowling wide outside off.But back came Bell to deceive Sciver with an outstanding back-of-the-hand slower ball, and when Taylor returned to end Brunt’s struggle with a top-edged slog to square leg, Rockets had slumped to 76 for 4 with two new batters at the crease. Despite the best efforts of Heather Graham at the death, the requirement was already out of reach by the time Shrubsole popped up with three in four balls to put the seal on a comprehensive win.

Tottenham want "exciting" £84m Solanke alternative more than any other club

Tottenham are now believed to be showing the “strongest interest” in signing a clinical striker, despite only just signing Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for around £65 million.

Spurs end Harry Kane replacement search with marquee Solanke deal

In the summer window, Spurs ended their year-long search for Harry Kane’s replacement by bringing in Solanke – who scored an impressive 21 goals in all competitions for the Cherries last season, with 19 of them coming in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old was actually pretty unlucky not to get a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024, considering his goal tally for 2023/2024, but Solanke’s form didn’t go unnoticed in north London.

Tottenham met Solanke’s £65 million release clause, which could only be triggered by a member of the Premier League’s big six, with £55 million paid up front and a further £10m agreed in add-ons.

The former Liverpool ace put pen to paper on a long-term six-year contract, keeping him at the club until 2030, and it is believed Solanke earns around £90,000-per-week at Tottenham.

“The signing of a new striker was never supposed to spark the exit of Brazil striker Richarlison, with Postecoglou confirming his faith in him,” said BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella on why Spurs signed Solanke.

“He believes they needed another option as they missed Richarlison when he was injured, with no natural alternative. Postecoglou believes Solanke will be the perfect fit for his system. That is down to his running ability, pressing skills and goal output.

“He isn’t going to pin all his hopes on Solanke scoring goals though, as his style of play should mean players from all over the pitch will chip in.”

It’s been a slow start to life for Solanke at Tottenham, though, with an ankle injury sustained on the opening weekend keeping him out of their matches against both Everton and Newcastle United.

The one-cap international is yet to score his first goal for Spurs, having made three appearances in all competitions against Leicester City, Arsenal and Coventry City.

Tottenham showing most interest in signing Viktor Gyokeres

Some reports have claimed that Spurs could sign another striker to partner Solanke, and this has been backed up by CaughtOffside this week.

According to their information, Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres is high on the agenda. It is believed Tottenham have shown the “strongest interest” in signing Gyokeres, who continues to blow away on-lookers with his impressive goalscoring record.

The Swede already boasts nine goals and three assists in seven appearances across all competitions, coming after a phenomenal 23/24 campaign where he scored 43 in total for Sporting.

However, he is set to be a costly operation, and Tottenham would have to shatter their transfer record to strike a deal. Sporting reportedly want his £84 million release clause paid in full, and it remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy would green-light such an expensive swoop.

“Gyokeres at Sporting Lisbon is a very interesting link,” said pundit John Wenham to Tottenham News.

“He had the experience in England with Coventry City, where he was very impressive. His overall game is good. He is big and strong, he can play on the ball and his finishing is ridiculously good.”

“That would be an exciting signing.”

Man Utd now keeping tabs on "outrageous" gem who’s the son of a UCL legend

Looking ahead to the future, Manchester United are now reportedly keeping tabs on the son of a Champions League legend alongside Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Man Utd transfer news

Despite an influx of talent in the summer transfer window, INEOS are still seemingly looking to add to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad in 2025. This could come as a result of their recent results, with the Red Devils winning just twice in their last six games in all competitions and in desperate need of what would be a crucial victory over Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

With a change in fortune in mind, Manchester United have already been linked with moves for the likes of Nico Williams in 2025, in a deal that INEOS are reportedly willing to throw everything at in an attempt to beat Barcelona to the Athletic Bilbao star’s signature.

However, Williams isn’t the only attacking star to have been linked with a move to Old Trafford. According to reports in Spain, Manchester United are now keeping tabs on Ruben van Bommel following the winger’s recent rise at AZ Alkmaar.

Ruben van Bommel for AZ Alkmaar.

The Dutchman is, of course, the son of PSV and Champions League legend Mark van Bommel, who also played for Bayern Munich, Milan and Barcelona. If the Alkmaar youngster follows in his father’s footsteps, then Manchester United would be pulling off some coup by landing his signature as early as 2025.

Ashworth wants to beat Real Madrid to "underrated" ace Man Utd have scouted

The Red Devils face plenty of competition.

ByTom Cunningham Sep 28, 2024

Van Bommel is reportedly ready to make the leap to a big club next year, which may yet end in a move to Old Trafford.

"Outrageous" Van Bommel can take different path to father

If Van Bommel does follow the same path as his father, then Bayern Munich awaits. Otherwise, the winger has the chance to do something that the iconic midfielder never quite managed by starring in the Premier League at Manchester United.

Still just 20 years old, Van Bommel junior would certainly fit the profile of what the Red Devils are looking to add these days, especially given the start that he’s made to the current campaign with six goals and three assists in just eight games. It’s a rise that Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig saw coming since last season, having dubbed the start of Van Bommel’s professional career “outrageous”.

When 2025 arrives, there’s no doubt that the 20-year-old will be one to watch, especially if Manchester United add to their growing list of young forwards set to star for years to come at Old Trafford.

10 players who can shine under Thomas Tuchel for England

Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the new England manager, with the German replacing Gareth Southgate as the permanent Three Lions boss.

The 51-year-old has managed in England before, winning the Champions League during his time with Chelsea, while he has also taken charge of the likes of European heavyweights Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the last 10 years.

Tuchel will officially take charge of England in 2025, and his first major tournament looks set to be the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in Canada, Mexico and the United States. But who could really shine under Tuchel for England? We’ve taken a look at 10 players who could enjoy working under the German.

All stats correct as of 16th October 2024.

5 reasons the FA hired Thomas Tuchel as England manager

England’s successor to Gareth Southgate is ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel – but why was he so popular with the FA?

ByBarney Lane Oct 16, 2024 1 Harry Kane England caps: 101

England’s captain and record goalscorer, Harry Kane already has previous experience of working under Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

The centre-forward has scored goals under 17 different managers during his career for club and country, though his best minute-to-goal ratio has come when playing for Tuchel.

In 45 games, Kane has scored an impressive 44 goals and registered 12 assists under Tuchel, so the striker will surely be delighted that he is the new Three Lions boss.

England's top international goalscorers of all time

Here are the very best in front of goal for the Three Lions…

ByCharlie Smith Mar 21, 2024 2 Jude Bellingham England caps: 38

England international Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham looks set to be an extremely important player for England over the next decade, and the Real Madrid star already has an admirer in Thomas Tuchel.

During his time at Bayern Munich, Tuchel hailed Bellingham, saying: “Jude has had an extraordinary development. He was fantastic here in the Bundesliga and how he progressed here shows the level of personality, this is only possible with a huge personality.‌

“Everyone who plays for Real Madrid also plays with the pressure of the shirt, plays with the pressure to play for this club with the demands and expectations. He handles it like he has never done anything else before.

“He is very dangerous, very physical in his game and is an absolute key player.”

Should Tuchel apply his 3-4-2-1 system he used at Chelsea with the Three Lions, Bellingham could perhaps star as one of two in behind Kane.

3 Cole Palmer England caps: 11

A Chelsea star who Tuchel didn’t work with at Stamford Bridge is Cole Palmer, who has arguably been one of the most in-form players in world football during 2024.

Palmer was reduced to a role from the bench at Euro 2024 under Southgate, though he scored in the final against Spain and registered an assist in the semi-final against the Netherlands.

Should his incredible form at club level continue, Tuchel may have no choice but to find a place for Palmer in the England XI, whether that be in a 3-4-2-1 system or a 4-2-3-1 formation, looking to supply Kane in attack.

England Player of the Year: 4 players who deserved it more than Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer has been voted England Player of the Year, but were some of his teammates robbed?

1 ByBarney Lane Oct 11, 2024 4 Mason Mount England caps: 36

Central midfielder Mason Mount starred under Tuchel during his time at Chelsea, winning the Champions League in 2021. Talking after 12 months working under the German, Mount spoke about the attacking role he’d been given.

“This season over the last few I’ve probably played a little bit higher than I was used to – playing as a kind of forward 10, or sometimes a winger or a false 9. So I’ve had to adapt a bit, but that gives me more opportunity to get into the box and have the opportunities to score and create.

“So far this season that’s been a big focus of mine, to improve that and to put pressure on myself to be someone who wants to go forward and step up and score goals and create assists. That’s definitely something that’s improved over the time he’s been here.”

Mount’s since had a frustrating spell with Manchester United, but if he can play regularly for the Red Devils, Tuchel may look at a reunion with the midfielder on the international stage.

5 Marcus Rashford England caps: 60

One player who hasn’t been as prolific as Kane in front of goal during his career is Marcus Rashford, though the Manchester United winger is a player who Tuchel rates highly. Even though the two haven’t worked together during their careers, the German heaped praise on Rashford during his time at PSG.

He has struggled for consistency with the Red Devils, which resulted in failing to become a regular under Southgate, but he could be a player who Tuchel is relishing the chance to work with following his previous comments.

6 Ruben Loftus-Cheek England caps: 10

Another former Chelsea player who may be in line to work with Tuchel is Ruben Loftus-Cheek. The midfielder’s last England appearance came way back in 2018 and has since featured under Tuchel for the Blues, with the German even comparing Loftus-Cheek to the iconic Michael Ballack.

“I was quite a fan of him when he was younger. He reminded me of Michael Ballack in his style of play, his movements. There were links with him moving to Germany. We are well aware of his talent.”

Loftus-Cheek was sold to Milan in 2023 and has been a regular for the Serie A giants since then, so perhaps a call-up could be on the cards.

7 Conor Gallagher England caps: 19

Continuing the trend of ex-Chelsea midfielders who could shine under Tuchel for England is Conor Gallagher, now at Atletico Madrid.

The new England boss once compared Gallagher to N’Golo Kante and even handed the former his full Blues debut after numerous loan spells away from Stamford Bridge.

The pair’s time working together at Chelsea may have been short and sweet, but with Gallagher now an important member of Diego Simeone’s plans in Spain, perhaps an international role could be his in the near future.

England's 10 best managers of all time – ranked

How does Gareth Southgate rank among previous England bosses?

ByBen Browning Jul 17, 2024 8 Eric Dier England caps: 49

Centre-back Eric Dier appeared to surprise Tuchel during his time at Bayern Munich, with the coach admitting the defender was an “excellent signing” from Tottenham Hotspur that “exceeded expectations” for the German giants.

Dier was once a regular member of Southgate’s England squads, and with Tuchel knowing all about the player and what he could bring to the squad, perhaps a first call-up since 2022 could be on the cards.

9 Ben Chilwell England caps: 21

Left-back has been an unsettled area of the pitch for England in recent years, with first-choice Luke Shaw struggling with various injuries.

Right-back Kieran Trippier was used there often by Southgate, but Ben Chilwell could be the one to star for England under Tuchel. The pair know each other from Stamford Bridge where there were ups and downs, but at one point, Tuchel hailed Chilwell’s role as an attacking wing-back.

If he goes with a similar 3-4-2-1 system on the international stage, perhaps Chilwell could become a starter under Tuchel’s plans.

10 Trent Alexander-Arnold England caps: 33

Trent Alexander-Arnold for England

If wing-backs are the way forward for Tuchel with England, that could suit Trent Alexander-Arnold, who struggled to star under Southgate in recent years.

A role in midfield was tried at Euro 2024, but Tuchel allowing Alexander-Arnold to shine as a wing-back could be the way forward for a player with exceptional ability on the ball.

Three covering centre-backs would allow Alexander-Arnold to focus on getting forward, and he could be preferred to Reece James, who has struggled with injuries in recent years.

Lewis blitz helps Patriots storm past Warriors into CPL final

Dwayne Bravo’s decision to bowl was justified by a superb collective bowling effort

Coming off an unbeaten century in his last innings, Evin Lewis continued his sizzling-hot form by scorching Guyana Amazon Warriors’ bowling unit during his unbeaten 77 off 39 balls as St Kitts and Nevis Patriots breezed past a target of 179 with 13 balls to spare in a seven-wicket win in the second CPL semi-final. A first-time champion is guaranteed to be crowned on Wednesday as Patriots will take on St Lucia Kings in the final, who finished as runner-up last year when they were still known as Zouks.Dwayne Bravo’s decision to bowl was justified by a superb collective bowling effort. At the halfway stage of the innings, Warriors were in an excellent position at 88 for 2, with Nicholas Pooran having plundered 18 in the final over before the mid-innings drinks break off Chris Gayle’s part-time spin. But two balls after play resumed, the first of many dominoes fell as Pooran pulled Dominic Drakes to Lewis for 26 off 14 on the leg-side boundary. Wickets continued to tumble regularly thereafter as Warriors’ best partnership in the end wound up being the 33-run opening stand between Brandon King and Chandrapaul Hemraj. Warriors’ struggles were best exemplified by Shoaib Malik, whose horror season came to a merciful end when he charged against Jon-Russ Jaggesar and was stumped for 6 off 10. The Pakistan overseas pro ended with 67 runs in 10 innings at an average of 7.44 and zero wickets with the ball.Warriors looked like they may struggle to bat out their overs at one stage, slipping to 131 for 8 with 21 balls left before Shimron Hetmyer hit out with a series of sixes in his unbeaten 45 off 20 balls. Despite the late rally, Patriots’ start to the chase laid bare how poorly the Warriors top order had performed. After a sedate start in the first three overs against offspinner Kevin Sinclair in which Gayle crawled to 1 off 8 balls, Odean Smith was brought into the attack and bowled one of the fastest overs of the tournament, clocking over 150kph at one stage. But the balls disappeared even faster to the boundary as Gayle smashed him for four fours and a six during a 23-run over. Imran Tahir took similar punishment in the next over from Gayle and by the end of the powerplay, Patriots had raced to 68 without loss.Gayle fell in the eighth over to Sinclair for 42, mistiming a drive to long-on. But Lewis exacted revenge on the offspinner by smoking a pair of straight drives for six and then a four over extra cover to bring up a 24-ball half-century in the 10th over as Patriots continued to stampede toward the target.Smith struck twice in the space of three balls in the 16th over to break an 88-run stand between Lewis and Bravo, bowling the latter for 34, before Fabian Allen flicked a short ball straight to Hetmyer behind square on the ring for a duck. But that just made the final margin look slightly more competitive in the end than it was for much of the match. Lewis clinched victory slapping Hemraj over wide long-on for his third four to go along with eight sixes.

Por fim, o atacante Guilherme Pato, um dos atletas que tinham esperança de ganhar mais espaço, teve o contrato rescindido. Porém, ele permanece com uma porcentagem presa ao Inter.

Contratados

Até o momento, o Internacional confirmou as chegadas do centroavante Wesley Moraes e o retorno do meia Andrés D’Alessandro.
