Alastair Cook, Nick Browne hundreds provide Essex statement of intent

Former England opener offers latest reminder of what the Test team is currently missing

Andrew Miller07-Apr-2022

Alastair Cook reaches his hundred on day one of the season at Chelmsford•Andrew Miller

There’s a cutting on the press box wall at Chelmsford with a certain timeless quality. “Cook for England” states the back page of the Essex Chronicle from November 10, 2005, after the most promising opener in the country received the first of his international call-ups – as injury cover for Michael Vaughan on that winter’s tour of Pakistan.Seventeen years, 64 first-class centuries, and one knighthood later, those words could now be framed as a question (“Cook for England?”), a demand (“Cook for England!”), or a plea (“Cook for England, pretty please? With sugar on top?”). For here, at the start of his 20th season of first-class cricket, was 266 balls-worth of further evidence – stretched over six hours of unflappable application – that the man who stepped down from Test duty as a national record-breaker remains as dryly addicted to run-making as ever.Nick Browne also made a century, it should be noted – at a quicker lick, and with the more eye-catching flourishes too, particularly when leaning through a series of compact straight drives. But while he and Alastair Cook were in harness, ticking along at 2.7 an over in a 220-run opening stand, there was little for Kent’s fielders to do but chase leather in exchange for warmth on a bitingly blustery day, and rue the early optimism that had persuaded their skipper, Ollie Robinson, to bowl first after winning the toss. For this was April … the alternative narrative. The one in which county cricket’s livid green seamers are lifeless with permafrost, and where icy cross-winds buffet the bowlers to such an extent that an extra five overs could have been factored in through aborted run-ups. In fact, those watching on the ECB’s (somewhat bouncy) live stream might have thought they had tuned back into Big Jet TV by mistake, and when Matt Quinn bailed out three times in an over, some might have figured that watching Jumbo Jets cock up their approach would be rather more fun in this weather.Related

“Me and Cooky batting isn’t going to bring the crowds to county cricket,” Browne joked afterwards. “It was a good day for concentration.”And yet, the first part of that statement wasn’t strictly true. Despite the disconcerting rattle of the floodlights on their wobbly gantries, and the prospect of the sponsor’s tarpaulin breaking its moorings on the roof of the midwicket pavilion, a very healthy crowd – upwards of 1200 of county cricket’s hardiest – braved the chill and embraced the intermittent shafts of spring sunshine to welcome home a long-lost format. For Essex haven’t had much of a chance to cement their red-ball mastery in recent seasons. The Bob Willis Trophy was more than just a consolation prize when Covid struck in 2020, but last year’s Division Two “title” was greeted with the disdain of a Champions League runner-up flinging their medal into the crowd. This, however, is more like it. Essex are back to the top flight that has been in suspended animation since their 2019 title was won, and notwithstanding Kent’s four-wicket rally with the new ball, they’ve opened their account with a statement of intent. And yet, the pandemic did have one significant side effect. It is almost certainly the reason why Cook is still here at all, rather than tending to his new-born lambs or further sharpening those incisors as a media pundit, as he begins to discover that his wisdom is more likely to be heard when it is delivered with conviction.”It’s been a bit of a stop-start three years, hasn’t it?” Cook said earlier in the week at Essex’s media day. “I never planned to do three years. But then Covid came along and it didn’t feel right, and then last year was a conference system and again it didn’t feel right. It’s a big commitment to do it with what goes on in the other parts of my life, but I genuinely enjoy turning up, and when you feel you can be competitive you might as well carry on.”And so here he was, to the fore once more – that familiar angular stance, like a sculpture made of coathangers, pressing forward, rocking back, chopping hard and nudging off his hip like … well, like a county opener nudging the England selectors, ideally, but, beyond any equivocation, that ship has sailed.Nick Browne brings up his half-century for Essex•Andrew Miller

And alongside him for 82 overs, his friend and acolyte Browne – and who’s to say that he can’t do some nudging of his own, given the Test team’s open-book status, and the clear run of opportunities between now and the New Zealand series in June.Browne’s approach – tall, left-handed, risk-averse – is not dissimilar to Cook’s, albeit rather more smoothed at the corners, and between them they gave Kent’s toiling attack not a sniff until two loose drives at the Aussie import Jackson Bird – a bowler who must be sick of the sight of Cook in particular. The last time they met, on a Melbourne featherbed in December 2017, Cook walked away with 244, and Bird never played Test cricket again.Up until that point, both men had produced chanceless knocks – although the look on Darren Stevens’ face after a lively lbw shout against Cook maybe begged to differ. County cricket’s elder statesman toiled to no avail for 14 typically economical overs, albeit eight of his 28 runs were served up in the space of his first four balls, as he twice offered Browne too much width for his favoured cut. Thereafter he knuckled down like the old pro that he literally is, confirming – much like Cook, in fact – that hunger remains the defining factor when gearing up for the season-long grind.Cook found fewer freebies to help kickstart his innings – he made just seven runs in the first hour, but then more than doubled his output in two balls as Quinn strayed onto the leg side, and that rapacious ability to pounce on mistakes surged back into view. By lunch, he had made 34, with Browne already past a 109-ball fifty, but Cook picked up his tempo as Kent’s optimism waned in the mid-afternoon, and as he fairly sprinted into the 80s it seemed for a moment he would win the race to the century. But another of Browne’s compact punches down the ground soon settled that score.A penny for Dan Lawrence’s thoughts as he watched this attritional masterclass playing out for the bulk of the day’s three sessions. His own England endeavours haven’t warranted any press-box cuttings just yet, but he’s the man in possession as the Test season approaches, and on the season’s eve, he had made it clear he planned to pick Cook’s brain in particular, to a bid to unlock the mental side of his burgeoning career.Alas for Lawrence, Cook denied him the chance for some on-field tutelage, by settling instead for a “do as I say not as I do” moment of practical demonstration, as he lost his shape and his concentration, four balls after knocking his landmark single off his hip, and snicked an edge through to Robinson. Lawrence had time in his 21-ball stay to flick Matt Milnes through fine leg for four, but had reached just 7 when he shouldered arms to an inducker from Quinn, and was sent on his way lbw. It was a very similar demise to his final-day duck in Grenada, in fact – and quite conceivably betrayed a surfeit of risk-aversion, as he over-thinks the transition required to make his starts count in red-ball cricket. But then again, blaming the white-ball game for such matters is a “big cop-out that a lot of journalists use”, so what would I know?Essex’s day was not without blemish, off the field either. The day began with a well-meaning but amorphous “moment of reflection”, with both teams lined up on the boundary’s edge to contemplate everything from Shane Warne’s death, to the war in Ukraine … to the contents of an Essex racism report that is rumoured to be close to seeing the light of day, but also seems to be at the centre of a row every bit as divisive as the one that has beset Yorkshire all winter long. Among the first-day attendees was Essex’s ex-chairman, John Faragher, who declined the club’s request that he lie low following his resignation for allegedly using racial language in a board meeting. However this one ends, it’s unlikely to end quietly.Ultimately, all such matters belong on a spectrum of incidents that inform English cricket’s ongoing cultural revolution. The ground announcer’s amusingly self-conscious attempts to say “batter” instead of “batsman” was another reminder that habits, once ingrained, are hard to amend overnight. For better and very much for worse, the County Championship remains a bastion for doing things the old-fashioned way.

Man Utd want to sign "world class" £120m duo after Tyler Dibling in January

Manchester United have now earmarked a trio of stars for potential January transfers as they look to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad for the second half of the season, a new report has claimed.

Manchester United remain consistently inconsistent

After a promising start to Ruben Amorim’s reign at Old Trafford, the Red Devils have reverted to type in recent weeks. A 3-0 loss against Bournemouth at Old Trafford left them 13th in the Premier League, the first time that they have ever spent Christmas in the bottom half of the table.

With more losses than wins this season, they also have a negative goal difference and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham in midweek, leaving them with just the Europa League and FA Cup left to play for this season.

Owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe summed up their fall from grace at the beginning of December, explaining: “Manchester United has become mediocre, it is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world.”

Changes are inevitable, and they have already begun. Marcus Rashford seems certain to be a high-profile casualty of Amorim’s arrival, with the Englishman left out of the squad for a third consecutive game by the new Manchester United boss and publicly admitting he was seeking a fresh start. Now, they are reportedly set to make even more changes in January.

United target audacious triple transfer in January

That comes courtesy of a shock report from Spain, which claims that the Red Devils are ready to back Amorim to the tune of almost £150m in the January transfer window, with three players in their crosshairs.

First among those is Southampton teenager Tyler Dibling, who has risen to prominence this season and who United are thought to want to add to their ranks. As per the report, Southampton are asking for £30m to part ways with the academy talent, who has been their sole shining light this season but could be available even more cheaply should they be relegated, a fate that looks overwhelmingly likely.

Then, the Red Devils also want to upgrade at both ends of the pitch. In goal, they are eyeing up a move for Borussia Dortmund’s ‘world class’ goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. It is claimed that the German side are “asking for 70 million euros” [£58m] but that United are “willing to invest” that sum in the 27-year-old.

Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

And in a bid to fix their goalscoring issues, Manchester United also want to raid Sporting CP for “world class” forward Viktor Gyokeres, who the report claims would cost a further €75 million (£62.2m).

Of these moves, Dibling’s perhaps appears the most likely, with Kobel an ever-present for Dortmund this season and Amorim having promised upon arrival that he would not sign any players from his former club in the January transfer window.

In truth though, all three deals seem unlikely to take place in the middle of the season, and seem more likely to be summer transfers if they were to happen at all.

PRESSÃO DO LEÃO!

Mohammad Abbas celebrated his first LV= Insurance County Championship five-wicket haul of the season but Gloucestershire’s ripsnorting evening session snatched the momentum from Hampshire.Hampshire looked set for a first-innings lead in excess of 200 after Abbas ripped through the visitors with a textbook showcase of line and length bowling with 6 for 45. But Ajeet Singh Dale and Jared Warner added 55 for the last wicket to reduce the deficit to 163.And then Mohammad Amir continued the Pakistani bowling dominance with 3 for 22, with Ryan Higgins also pilfering a scalp, to leave Hampshire 28 for 4, with their lead 191.To start the day, Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott had failed to reach the bonus point for 350 runs despite a spirited morning effort, with Graeme van Buuren pinning Abbott lbw and Dawson flailing to deep extra cover – Hampshire all out for 342.Abbas came into his own with an incredible seven-over spell of 4 for 16. Abbas’ second over was an Ageas Bowl classic. Marcus Harris left the first ball and pumped the second for three before the overseas signing found George Scott’s tentative outside-edge behind. James Bracey was shelled at third slip first ball, played and missed the second before he finally tickled behind – Abbas coming over, around and then over the wicket again, a plan hatched by Keith Barker during their meeting last year.Hampshire were now in the box seat and relentlessly hunted down further wickets. Miles Hammond was the next to feather Abbas to keeper Ben Brown before van Buuren was leg before on the cusp of lunch.Abbas’ spell initiated murmurs in the Hampshire dressing room that it had produced more heat than other efforts in recent weeks due to compatriots Amir and Naseem Shah watching on.Marcus Harris ended the procession to Abbas by loosely driving Abbott to second slip and Tom Lace had his off stump left lopsided by James Fuller.Ryan Higgins countered with an entertaining 46 in conjunction with Dom Goodman before taking on Felix Organ one too many times to top-edge to deep midwicket. Abbas then completed his five-wicket haul with a short ball into Goodman’s ribs, which was gloved through to Brown. Amir followed two balls later with a sharp edge to second slip – Abbas celebrating by running down to his friend and laying his hands on his shoulder in a consolidatory manner. The hosts debated whether to enforce the follow-on or not at the fall of that ninth wicket, only for Dale and Warner to put on 55 – the highest partnership of the innings. Dale, against his former county, laughed at his No.11 billing with a brisk 36. Organ eventually got Warner to push to short leg to bowl Gloucestershire out for 179.Gloucestershire’s glee was increased as, in 11 evening overs, Amir had Organ jabbing to the cordon second ball, before Ian Holland fell in the following over – caught behind attempting to leave Higgins.Abbott and Abbas were lbw in successive balls to Amir coming around the wicket, as Hampshire saw their openers and tail disappear in a little over 45 minutes of havoc.

Corberan 2.0: West Brom could forget Robins by appointing "talented" coach

Often, a shock managerial departure can derail your ongoing season. But, for West Bromwich Albion, it was business as usual on New Year’s Day.

The Baggies did lose away at Derby County right after Carlos Corberan’s swift exit to Valencia, but the promotion chasers – who now have ex-West Brom playing legend Chris Brunt at the helm on a temporary basis – convincingly beat Preston North End 3-1 back at the Hawthorns to start 2025 off on a dream footing.

It remains to be seen whether or not the beloved Northern Irishman is handed the reins permanently at the Championship outfit, with a number of names being linked to the Baggies vacancy since it became available on Christmas Eve.

Possible Corberan replacements

Of course, it isn’t out of the question that Brunt could chosen to be Corberan’s successor, especially if more victories come his way from the dug-out.

But, there are other names being linked too, with Swansea City boss Luke Williams reportedly now in the running for the main gig at the Baggies.

There have even been suggestions that one-time England manager Lee Carsley was approached about taking over from Corberan, only for that advance to be allegedly rejected by the 50-year-old.

Moreover, West Brom were also keen at one stage to snap up Mark Robins’ services after his Coventry City dismissal, but that didn’t go to plan as Robins has recently been unveiled as Stoke City’s new boss.

Whilst that would have been a popular appointment – considering the 55-year-old’s heroics at the Sky Blues saw them on the cusp of Premier League football at one stage – it looks ever more likely that the Baggies have now found their desired man away from Robins, who could end up being a second coming of Corberan.

West Brom interested in "talented" coach

That man is John Heitinga – as reported by the Daily Mail at the end of December – who will be mainly known to English football fans for his playing days at Everton where he was a no-nonsense style centre-back.

Now, however, he is behind enemy lines at Liverpool as a coach, having impressed previously at West Ham United and in his native Netherlands with Ajax as an assistant figure and even as a main manager.

Of course, Corberan’s journey into management in the English game started as a second in command too, with the Spaniard a first-team coach at Leeds United under the esteemed tutelage of Marcelo Bielsa.

The South American even boldly claimed that the now Valencia boss had an opinion that he “values more than his own”, with the 41-year-old then going on to be a rip-roaring success in the EFL with both Huddersfield Town and West Brom after leaving Leeds behind to be a number one.

Johnny Heitinga for Liverpool.

Heitinga has had similar praise from high-up figures during his coaching career to date, with Arne Slot – who has only lost one Premier League game in charge of Liverpool to date – heralding him as a “talented” coach upon his arrival from the Hammers last July.

Moreover, the highly regarded Dutchman has shown he can be a competent main boss when taking on the reins of Ajax temporarily in the past, alongside when he had been coaching various different youth set-ups at the Eredivisie giants.

Picking up 103 total victories from 190 games, the time could be right for Heitinga to dive into the deep end of the Championship with West Brom.

After all, Ipswich Town succeeded beyond their wildest dreams when taking a punt on former Manchester United coach Kieran McKenna, with a left-field approach perhaps working here too.

Arron Lilley makes light work of modest chase as Leicestershire roll Rapids

Unbroken century stand with Nick Welch reels in target as Foxes bowlers share the spoils

ECB Reporters Network17-Jun-2022

Leicestershire Foxes at last gave their supporters something to cheer as an eight-wicket win over bottom-of-the-table Worcestershire Rapids ended a run of four consecutive home defeats in the Vitality Blast North Group.Ben Mike, Naveen-ul-Haq and Callum Parkinson shared the wickets with three apiece as the Rapids were restricted to a paltry 116 for 9 after electing to bat first, Kashif Ali’s 24 in his fourth appearance a modest top score. It was a total the Rapids, without Moeen Ali on England duty and Ben Cox ruled out by illness, were never likely to be able to defend and the Foxes cruised home with almost eight overs to spare with Arron Lilley smashing 12 fours and a six in an unbeaten 68 from 39 balls. His unbroken third-wicket stand of 101 with Nick Welch (41 not out) came off just 59 balls. The night had begun with what Rapids fans hoped was a show of intent as Brett D’Oliveira slog-swept and cut Parkinson for six and four in the opening over but that was as good as it got in a dire batting show. The left-arm spinner pushed one through to bowl the Rapids skipper next ball, before Naveen had Ed Pollock brilliantly caught at short third man off a thick edge with his first ball. Jack Haynes heaved Wiaan Mulder over midwicket for six but he holed out to mid-off, the third casualty of a powerplay that saw them 44 for 3.Two more wickets for Parkinson, who bowled Colin Munro and had Ed Barnard stumped off a wide delivery, added to the visitors’ woes and when Gareth Roderick found the fielder at wide long-on the Rapids were 61 for 6 in the 11th.Dwayne Bravo and Kashif stopped the procession of wickets, but while they added 40 for the seventh wicket it took them 38 balls – a snail’s pace in this format. Bravo clumped one six over midwicket off Rehan Ahmed but when he lofted Naveen over the long-off boundary the Afghan bowler gained revenge next ball with his 19th wicket of the campaign, finding the edge as the former West Indies captain drove.Kashif fell victim to a fine, diving catch by Swindells behind the stumps off Mike, whose two overs at the death cost only eight runs and earned him a third wicket when Josh Baker chopped on.Mitchell Stanley, a 21-year-old fast bowler making his debut, yorked Harry Swindells to claim a wicket with his first ball in senior cricket and Rishi Patel swung ambitiously at a ball from Pat Brown that bowled him as the Foxes lost two wickets in the first 14 balls of the powerplay. But Welch – making his first appearance of the season as one of two changes in the Foxes’ line-up – and Lilley made short work of the target, reaching 49 without further loss in the powerplay before getting after a disheartened Rapids attack with a flurry of boundaries, Lilley lofting Bravo over the straight boundary, taking three fours in one over off Stanley, whose evening ended with Lilley cracking the winning boundary over extra cover.
