Joe Root puts name forward for IPL auction after lengthy T20 absence

Former Test captain hopes sighter of Indian conditions could help 50-over World Cup plans

Joe Root will enter the upcoming IPL auction on December 23 in a bid to break into the competition for the first time in his career.A combination of international commitments and a five-year tenure as England Test captain have restricted Root’s opportunities, both on the T20 franchise circuit and in the format altogether. His only exposure to domestic tournaments outside of the T20 Blast and the Hundred came in 2018-19 with a stint at Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.Root’s previous foray into the IPL auction came in 2018 when he went unsold. ESPNcricinfo understands that he appreciates the same might happen this time around, but he has no expectations on salary or destination and would simply like to experience the world’s premier T20 competition. He has not played a T20I since making 47 from 42 balls against Pakistan in May 2019, on the eve of the 50-over World Cup.Root’s primary attraction to franchises would be his ability against spin, particularly with the IPL reverting to a home-and-away format in 2023. He also provides a bowling option with his offbreaks, and has often bowled in the powerplay during his sporadic T20 appearances. One aspect that could work in his favour is the IPL’s growing links with English cricket. Lucknow Super Giants head coach Andy Flower worked with Root consistently during a 12-year spell with the ECB and is currently his Trent Rockets coach, while Trevor Bayliss, England’s coach from 2015-19, has recently taken over at Punjab Kings. That the current Test coach Brendon McCullum has strong ties with Kolkata Knight Riders, where James Foster is now assistant coach, won’t hurt Root’s chances of being talked up by the franchise’s management. Vikram Solanki, team director at defending champions Gujarat Titans, will be another prominent English presence at the upcoming auction.Related

At 31, Root’s calendar is a little clearer without the burden of captaincy. After a two-months break, following the summer’s final Test against South Africa, he is currently in the UAE where England’s men are preparing for their three-Test tour of Pakistan at the start of December. From there, the next Test engagement is a two-match series against New Zealand in February 2023. There is a chance Root might play a part in the ODIs in South Africa and the three ODIs contained within March’s white-ball tour of Bangladesh, ahead of the 50-over World Cup in India later that year, but he is expected to be available for the majority of the IPL season. England’s first Test of the 2023 summer, against Ireland at Lord’s, begins on June 1.Speaking to the , Root said he hoped a potential IPL gig would go some way to making up for the blind spots he may have developed in the shortest format, given he has only made 11 appearances (for Yorkshire and Trent Rockets) since the start of 2021. Experiencing Indian conditions ahead of the World Cup there in October would be another bonus.”I have no thoughts or feelings of retirement or slowing down or playing fewer formats,” Root said. “If anything, I feel a little bit more freedom with my time. I always used to get rested for the T20s and I feel like I got alienated from the format because I had not played enough of it.”You can feel like you are getting left behind a little bit. Now, the next couple of years, might be a good time to explore playing a little bit more of that format and see how far I can take that side of my game.”That is especially valid because of how we are trying to play now as a Test team. Looking at the game through a T20 lens, will that benefit my Test cricket?”

Rangers hit the "jackpot" on Clement signing who’s now worth 664% more

Rangers’ Jekyll and Hyde season continues.

Domestically, the Light Blues have very little to play for, languishing 13 points adrift run-away Premiership leaders Celtic, despite being unbeaten in nine league matches, most recently battling to a 3-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Mohammed Diomande

Meanwhile, they’re seemingly set for a trophyless season, having been beaten in December’s League Cup Final on penalties, before ignominiously exiting the Scottish Cup at the hands of Queen’s Park, a monumental and historic shock.

However, in the Europa League, Philippe Clement’s team impressively secured a top eight finish, so will now face one of Bodø/Glimt, Anderlecht, Fenerbahçe or Twente in the round of 16, with the first leg on the road coming up on 6 March.

So, while this has largely been a campaign to forget, a few more memorable European nights at Ibrox could be on the cards and, if Rangers are going to make progress in the Europa League, they’ll need their superstar striker to be on top form.

Rangers' search for a striker

Rangers’ top-scoring attacker of the post-liquidation era, by quite some distance, is Alfredo Morelos, who scored 124 goals in 269 appearances for the club, averaging a goal every 152 minutes.

33 of the Colombian’s goals came in UEFA competitions, becoming the Gers’ record European scorer, smashing the previous record set by Ally McCoist of 21, who didn’t mind too much, saying “I hope he hangs around and continues his goalscoring form… it would be great”.

However, Morelos didn’t hang around for too much longer, departing on a Bosman in May 2023, signing for Brasileirão outfit Santos, currently on loan at Atlético Nacional, and the Gers have found him a difficult figure to replace.

The summer of Morelos’ departure, Rangers spent big to fill his void, signing both Cyriel Dessers for £4.5m, as well as Danilo for a reported fee of £6m.

Cyriel Dessers

Fair to say, neither have lived up to the billing, with Mark Walker of the National describing Dessers as a ‘flop’, while Graeme Young of the Daily Record notes that Danilo ‘has been reduced to fleeting appearances’ due to persistent injury setbacks.

So, let’s assess their respective Rangers careers so far.

As the table outlines, neither Dessers nor Danilo have had catastrophically disastrous Rangers careers, both averaging a goal roughly every 140 minutes on the park.

That though has been exactly the problem for Danilo, sitting out 60 of the 101 matches Rangers have played since the start of last season due to injury, thereby unable to contribute.

Meantime, the most glaring statistic for Dessers is the fact he has missed 44 Opta defined big chances since the start of last season, a remarkably high number.

Cyriel Dessers

In this year’s Europa League, of all 670 players who’ve had at least one shot, the Nigerian striker has the second-lowest goals – xG figure of -3, above only his compatriot Victor Osimhen for this metric, with the Galatasaray attacker having attempted a whopping 25 more shots.

Interestingly, the player top of this very same metric is also a Rangers player, so could he be Clement’s saviour in front of goal?

Rangers have struck gold with "jackpot transfer"

After these two not-so-good centre-forward signings the season before, few had high hopes when Rangers acquired Hamza Igamane for a reported fee of £1.7m last summer, arriving from AS FAR of Morocco’s top division.

However, Anthony Evans of the Daily Record notes that the 22-year-old has ‘been in red-hot form this season’, scoring 13 goals in all competitions, four of which have come in the Europa League, as well as a hat-trick against Hibs at Easter Road.

Meantime, Keith Jackson also of the Daily Record, labels him a ‘superstar’, while Matthew Elder of the Scotsman believes he has been the Premiership’s ‘signing of the season’.

Joining for £1.7m as mentioned, CIES Football Observatory believe he is now worth more than £13m, representing a 664% increase in value, while it was reported in January that Rangers had set a £25m price tag on Igamane, amidst interest from Everton.

That valuation is more than justified considering he has shown himself to be a “completely unpredictable” and exciting talent, as per analyst Ben Mattinson, with it certainly looking like a “jackpot transfer” for the Light Blues, in the words of talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Market Movers

So, while Danilo and Dessers may be flops, Igamane could represent a huge return on investment, potentially yielding Rangers’ club-record sale, currently held by Calvin Bassey’s £19.6m move to Ajax.

Better than Bajrami: Rangers may rue losing "really important" star for £0

A former Rangers star has been on fire since re-joining his former club in January, so do the Gers rue losing the “really important” star for free?

West Ham supporters will be hoping he can replicate his 2022/2023 form at the London Stadium, following two campaigns blighted by injury and falling down the Amex Stadium pecking order.

Ferguson’s arrival comes as a boost for Potter given Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug’s long-term injury problems, but the 20-year-old was by no means their only striker target in January.

West Ham also made a failed attempt to sign Brian Brobbey from Ajax, despite going as far as to agree personal terms (talkSPORT), with the Irons having an offer rejected for PSV Eindhoven star Ricardo Pepi as well.

Now, it has emerged that West Ham also tried their luck with a mid-season swoop for highly-rated young Juve forward Samuel Mbangula.

The 21-year-old has been a very useful asset for the Old Lady across 2024/2025 – scoring four goals and bagging four assists in 25 total appearances so far – and this is apparently attracted interest from east London.

Juventus stance after failed bid from West Ham for Samuel Mbangula

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, West Ham had an £8 million bid rejected for Mbangula in January, with Juve firm on their demands if Potter’s side wish to come back in with another attempt this summer.

The Serie A heavyweights want nearly triple that amount at a minimum, around £21 million, and his price tag could even go as high as £25 million if the Belgian carries on his impressive performances.

That being said, if West Ham or any other interested side offer an amount around the latter fee, then Juve sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli will certainly be tempted to sell.

“We are a young team that has to inject a lot of pace into the game in order to cause problems for teams,” Juventus boss Thiago Motta told a press conference, later praising Mbangula.

“Once again today, the players who came off the bench raised the level of the team. I am very happy with Mbangula. He presses, he dribbles, he scores goals. He always has a fantastic attitude, he always gives everything.”

Glenn Phillips outscores Sri Lanka in New Zealand's huge win

Trent Boult claims career-best figures to leave New Zealand well placed to top Group 1

Andrew Fidel Fernando29-Oct-20221:40

Fleming: Possibly the strongest squad New Zealand have ever had

Sri Lanka had New Zealand 15 for 3 in the powerplay. But then they dropped Glenn Phillips, and it was all new Zealand from there. Phillips bashed 104 off 64 deliveries to almost single-handedly carry New Zealand to 167 for 7 (the next-highest score in the team was 22), before Trent Boult and Tim Southee put on a powerplay showcase, taking four wickets between them while the fielding restrictions were still on in Sri Lanka’s chase.Where New Zealand kept enough resources in store for a late-overs explosion, hitting 113 off the last 10, Sri Lanka squandered their batters before any sort of base could be established. They had crashed to 58 for 6 after 10 overs, and had no hope at all from there, eventually being bowled out for 102 as Boult finished with career-best figures of 4 for 13 and Southee claimed 1 for 12.This result took New Zealand to the top of the Group 1 table, with five points and an outstanding net run rate of 3.85. It sent Sri Lanka down to near the bottom of the table, with two points after three matches, and a poor NRR of -0.89. This means New Zealand are in an excellent place to not only qualify for the semi finals but also finish top of their group. Sri Lanka, however, will find a semi-finals spot incredibly difficult to seize from here.Phillips gets dropped
We’re not out to make Phillips’ century seem unearned, because of course it was. But had Pathum Nissanka held a sitter off Phillips in the seventh over, off the bowling of Wanindu Hasaranga, Phillips would have been out for 12 off 15, and New Zealand would have been 29 for 4. Phillips was also dropped for 45 off the 38th ball he faced – Dasun Shanaka unable to hold on to a tough chance running in from long off.Glenn Phillips hit four sixes and ten fours in his innings of 104•ICC via Getty Images

Phillips’ spectacular hitting
Sri Lanka kept taking the pace off the ball to Phillips, and in the best moments in this outstanding knock, he kept bullying the bowling over the boundary, mostly with brute strength. His successive sixes off Maheesh Theekshana in the 17th over, were especially brilliant. He first backed away to blast Theekshana high over wide long-on for six, and when the bowler pulled back the length next ball, Phillips backed away and bullied him into the sightscreen with a flat bat. All up, Phillips hit four sixes – the others coming off seam bowling – in addition to 10 fours. One of those fours was the murderous pull that got him to his second T20I century, and the second for New Zealand at a World Cup. The key partnership of the innings was Phillips’ stand of 84 with Daryll Mitchell, which helped raise New Zealand from the depths. Mitchell contributed 22 off 24; Phillips 59 off 40.Boult and Southee carve up the top order
Signs were not good for Sri Lanka when Southee opened with a wicket-maiden, bowling four swinging, dot balls to Nissanka, before the batter was stressed into attempting a weird leg-side heave which ended with him being trapped lbw. It got worse when Trent Boult claimed two wickets in the next over, having Kusal Mendis caught behind off the outside edge, before bowling Dhananjaya de Silva off the inside edge .In Boult’s second over, Charith Asalanka sliced one to backward point, where Finn Allen took a low catch. This left Sri Lanka at 8 for 4 after four overs. Despite Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 34 from 22, they did not look like ever launching a serious recovery.Sri Lanka’s excellent early overs
What Sri Lanka will rue most is that they let the game slip after making such a strong start. Theekshana swung one into Allen’s off stump in the first over. De Silva bowled Devon Conway in the third. Kasun Rajitha had Kane Williamson caught behind in the fourth. But where New Zealand would put on an outstanding fielding performance, Sri Lanka’s was awful. Beyond the dropped catches, there were fumbles in the outfield, mis-fields in the circle, and poor throws from everywhere. This went some way to deciding the game.

James Anderson: 'One of the best wins I've been involved in, if not the best'

Veteran seamer describes “incredible” Stokes as “someone you want to play for”

James Anderson, Ollie Robinson and Ben Stokes bask in England’s win•Matthew Lewis/Getty Images

James Anderson described England’s dramatic, 74-run win over Pakistan on the final day in Rawalpindi as “one of the best” victories of his career.Anderson has won 79 Test matches, the most of any England player, but said that this victory – with minutes to spare on the fifth evening – was among the best due to the placid nature of the pitch, which required bowlers on both sides to “dig deep”.”It’s probably one of the best wins I’ve been involved in, if not the best,” Anderson told . “On a pitch like that, to play the way we did, to score the runs at the rate we did, we gave ourselves a chance of getting a result and I think we deserved to put ourselves in that position at the end of the game.”Today, it was an unbelievable effort from everyone. We tried so hard to get the ball reversing and doing something, going off the straight, and we created enough chances to get the win. It was hard, but we knew it was going to be difficult.”With Ben [Stokes] and Brendon [McCullum], their mantra is that we’ve got to take wickets and look to take wickets all the time. Even though they [Pakistan] got 500-plus in the first innings, we still felt with that lead that we had, the way we scored, we could set ourselves something to defend.”Coming into today, we knew it was going to be hard because it’s still a good wicket but we managed to get the ball reversing which was absolutely huge. Getting the ball moving through the air makes a massive difference, and we executed our skills brilliantly.”Related

Anderson returned second-innings figures of 4 for 36 in 24 overs, including the key wickets of Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Rizwan, but praised Stokes and Ollie Robinson for their burst with the new ball on the fourth evening.”The one thing that stood out for me was the way that Ollie and Ben bowled with the new ball after not having much rest,” he said. “They came out with that short-ball theory and it got us a couple of wickets early.”That set things going and gave us a lot of confidence coming into today. We knew that it was going to be a big push and we dug deep today; we had to dig deep to try and get anything from that wicket.”Anderson described Stokes, the eighth captain he has played under, as an “incredible” leader. “He’s someone you want to play for,” he said. “He gives you so much confidence heading out there and the way he just knows what he wants to do.”He thinks about it a lot: the fields that he sets and the way that he just tells you what to do, basically, is great for us. It’s exciting, trying different things as well: exciting fields, different fields, thinking outside the box which you’ve got to do on pitches like this.”There are only three days between the first and second Tests of the series – the second starts in Multan on Friday – and Anderson admitted with a smile that he would feel sore on Tuesday after getting through 46 overs in the match at the age of 40.”It’s nice to have the win but I don’t think tomorrow will feel great for me,” he said. “It was a long five days. Quick turnaround, but that’s the nature of Test cricket. You know coming into a series that you’ve got back-to-back games and have to recover well and then come back in three days’ time and do it all over again.”
