Celtic must sell Hoops flop who Rodgers thought would have a "big impact"

Celtic swept Aberdeen aside with ease on Tuesday night as they clinched an impressive 5-1 victory at Parkhead to move 16 points clear of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops secured all three points thanks to two goals from Daizen Maeda and goals from captain Callum McGregor, January signing Jota, and substitute Hyun-jun Yang.

Celtic’s fourth goal came via Yang, who came off the bench in the second half, as the winger combined with several teammates before finding the back of the net at the near post.

The 22-year-old whiz has now produced three goals and five assists in all competitions for the Scottish giants, beating his tally of one goal and three assists in his debut campaign in Glasgow last term.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph described the South Korean attacker as a “raw” talent with “real potential” after being impressed by his cameo against the Dons.

It is now down to Yang to kick on and become a regular at Parkhead as he seeks to potentially become the only player from Brendan Rodgers’ first window back at the club to be a success at the club.

Celtic's 2023 summer signings for Rodgers

Ange Postecoglou moved on from Celtic at the end of the 2022/23 campaign to sign for Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and that opened the door for the Hoops to bring the Northern Irish head coach back for a second spell in Glasgow.

The board backed the former Liverpool and Leicester City boss in the transfer market during his first summer window in charge in 2023, as eight permanent signings were added to the squad.

As you can see in the table above, the Hoops made several fairly significant signings in an attempt to improve the manager’s options, with two centre-backs being among the top three most expensive additions.

However, only Nawrocki and Yang remain at the club in the present day out of those eight signings, and the former has only played twice in all competitions this season.

Tilio, Kwon, Holm, Palma, and Lagerbielke are all out on loan, and could have a future at Parkhead if things change dramatically, whilst Iwata was sold to League One side Birmingham City last summer.

This suggests that it was far from a successful first summer for Rodgers in the transfer market, as there is an argument to be made that Yang has been the only success out of the eight permanent additions, given that he is the only one to have played fairly regularly this season.

First Impressions

Celtic may have expected to get more out of some of them, given the fees splashed out on their services, and one player who was hyped up by Rodgers at the time was central midfielder Odin Thiago Holm.

Rodgers tipped Odin Thiago Holm for big things

In the summer of 2023, the Scottish giants swooped to sign the Norwegian youngster from Valerenga for a reported fee of £2.5m to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

The Norway U21 international had made 76 first-team appearances for Valerenga in all competitions and contributed with six goals and four assists from a midfield position.

Upon his arrival at Celtic that summer, Rodgers tipped the young talent for big things at Parkhead, telling the club’s official website:

“He is a player who has been in the club’s scouting and recruitment system for some time. I have looked at him closely and believe he is someone who can make a big impact at the club.

“He is a great addition to the quality squad we already have and we really look forward to working with him.”

Odin Holm

As you can tell from the quotes above, Rodgers had high hopes for Holm at Celtic and believed that the central midfielder was going to play a significant role in his side.

Fast-forward almost two years and the Norwegian midfielder should be ruthlessly sold by the Hoops head coach in the summer transfer window later this year.

Why Celtic should sell Odin Thiago Holm

The £4.8k-per-week flop endured a frustrating first season at Parkhead in the 2023/24 campaign, as he failed to make his way into the side on a regular basis.

Holm ended the term with 13 appearances and just 410 minutes of action across all competitions for the Scottish giants, contributing with one goal and one assist.

The 22-year-old dud was an unused substitute on 13 occasions and did not even make the matchday squad 24 times, which shows that he did not do enough in training or on the pitch to convince Rodgers that he was up to the task of playing week-in-week-out for Celtic.

As you can see in the highlights above, the low point of his debut season in Scotland was his red card for a high, studs-up, challenge in the 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the group stage of the Champions League.

Holm then made three appearances off the bench in the Premiership in the first half of the current campaign before he was sent out on loan to LAFC in the MLS in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old Hoops flop is currently out with a calf injury, though, and has yet to make his debut for the American side, whom he is set to be on loan to until the end of the year.

As you can see in the table above, Celtic already have a solid group of young and experienced midfielders who have played regularly in the Premiership this season, which suggests that Holm is unlikely to come back and force his way into the picture, as he is already behind Engels and Bernardo at a similar age.

Therefore, the Hoops should attempt to cut their losses and cash in on the young Norwegian when the summer transfer window opens, or next January at the end of his loan spell with LAFC, as he has been an unsuccessful signing after Rodgers tipped him for big things in Glasgow.

Everton star is now ready and waiting to become Bramley-Moore's own Lukaku

Everton are now unbeaten in their last six matches in the Premier League with any worries about relegation firmly wiped away with David Moyes’ inspired reappointment.

Now, the revitalised Toffees are staring up at the table, potentially even looking to break into the top half of the division if results continue to go their way, with Moyes and Co only ten points shy of Aston Villa occupying the dead centre of the league.

Once upon a time, finishes in and around this region were customary for the Merseysiders, with the efforts of one goalscoring hero in Romelu Lukaku memorably seeing Everton finish in a dizzying fifth position back in 2014, as the Belgian then went on to cement himself as a modern great at Goodison Park.

Romelu Lukaku's heroics at Everton

There are many names that come to mind when looking at some of the greats that have graced the Goodison turf in recent years.

Richarlison was one captivating figure who endeared himself to the Toffees fanbase with full-blooded displays when he was still present, alongside other faces from yesteryear such as hulking giants, Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini.

But, Fellaini’s fellow compatriot is definitely in contention to be the cream of the crop here, considering the towering 6 foot 3 forward would pick up the top scorer accolade every season he was present.

In total, across those four celebrated campaigns, Lukaku notched up a stunning 87 strikes from 166 contests, leading to the Antwerp-born star joining Manchester United for a huge fee of £90m in the summer of 2017.

So, with the club’s time at Goodison coming to an end, the club’s supporters will be longing for some new heroes as they enter Bramley Moore.

Could the new Lukaku lie in wait? Quite possibly.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Everton's next version of Lukaku

Everton seriously lacked confidence in front of goal when Sean Dyche was still at the Goodison helm with Moyes’ reentry into the Toffees hot-seat thankfully working wonders in this department.

Indeed, ex-Udinese striker Beto was barely given a chance to impress under the former Burnley manager’s drab regime, before now finally finding his shooting boots in England under the Scotsman.

Looking at the table below, it’s clear to see Moyes’ impact on the Portuguese star, with Beto picking up five of his six Premier League goals for the campaign across his last handful of league outings, leading to the Athletic’s Paddy Boyland suggesting that is now “thriving” under the new regime.

If he can keep this goalscoring form up, it looks likely that Beto will take home the top scorer nod at the end of the unfolding season, with the imposing 6 foot 4 attacker then hoping to head down the same path as Lukaku in becoming a revered figure on Merseyside.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin continuing to suffer from his own injury problems, the resurgence of Beto has come at the perfect possible time as his side strives to climb further and further up the tricky division.

Whilst it will be difficult for the former Udinese forward to ever eclipse Lukaku’s hefty Toffees goal haul, the Lisbon-born striker is already becoming a firm fan’s favourite for how quickly he has turned around his fortunes, with lots more to hopefully come when the new era at Bramley Dock officially kicks off.

Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan look up to ICC working group to address lack of Tests

The three teams have combined to play just 23 Tests since 2017

Tristan Lavalette17-Feb-2023

Zimbabwe played only 14 Tests from 2017-22•AP

As they trudged off the Queens Sports Club after suffering a second successive Test thrashing, Zimbabwe were left disappointed at being comprehensively outplayed by West Indies.Defeat in this recently-concluded two-match series, however, was almost inconsequential for a nation emerging from an 18-month hiatus from Test cricket. Before hosting West Indies this month, Zimbabwe played only 14 Tests from 2017-22: in part because ongoing financial strife forced them to, and also because enticing bigger Full Members while not being part of the nine-team World Test Championship (WTC) has proven something of an impossible sell for them.Ireland and Afghanistan, who became Full Members by gaining Test status in 2017, are also not part of the WTC, and similarly have barely played Test cricket; Ireland have had only three Tests since, while Afghanistan just six. But when the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the period 2023-27 was released last August, these three teams were allocated significantly more Tests: Afghanistan (21), Zimbabwe (20) and Ireland (12).Related

Afghanistan cricket plunged into crisis as ICC funds-flow hits snags

ICC puts onus on boards to make international calendar manageable

ICC: 'Volume of ODIs and T20Is in the calendar is up to every member'

Until that announcement, Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan had combined to play just 23 Tests since 2017; none of them played another for the rest of 2022 as well. So while the Test numbers were a positive, the problem was that precious few in the new FTP were scheduled against the cash cows of India, England and Australia. Zimbabwe, notably, were allocated 109 matches across formats, with not a single one – even in the shorter formats – being against cricket’s three biggest draw cards.During ICC meetings in Melbourne last November, while he contemplated running for ICC chair, Zimbabwe Cricket boss Tavengwa Mukuhlani used his leverage to push for a working group focused at looking into current and future FTP bilateral planning arrangements. Mukuhlani, along with ECB’s Martin Darlow and New Zealand Cricket’s Martin Snedden, will be comprising that group, which is expected to be ratified at next month’s ICC board meetings. They haven’t met formally, although they had discussions on the sidelines in Melbourne. The working group is open for Full Members to address concerns heightened amid international cricket’s shrinking calendar as T20 leagues sprout worldwide. It is expected to have a particular focus on the three countries not part of the WTC too, even as the abolition of the ODI World Cup Super League has also raised an alarm for smaller nations over future ODI fixtures.”We believe Zimbabwe is a Test nation. We can’t just let that slip simply because nations don’t want to play us,” Mukuhlani told ESPNcricinfo. “We have something to preserve and defend. We want to play Tests. We know it will cost us money, but we can’t put a value on playing Test cricket.”Zimbabwe have not played any of the so-called Big Three teams in Test cricket since September 2005, when they had hosted India for two Tests. Last year, they ended a 19-year drought of touring Australia other than for a World Cup, for a series which was part of the Super League, and where they famously won the third ODI, although their push for a one-off Test was rebuffed by CA.This year’s match remains Ireland’s only Test against England, India or Australia through to 2027•Getty Images

Mukuhlani said discussions were ongoing over Zimbabwe hosting India for a white-ball series later in the year after the countries played a three-match ODI series last August in Harare. But their relationship with England has long proved thorny due to strained political ties during the latter years of the reign of Zimbabwe dictator Robert Mugabe. The two countries have not played each other bilaterally since 2004 – and not at all since September 2007, when they had met in the inaugural ICC World T20 – although Zimbabwe’s political situation is different since Mugabe was ousted from power in 2017.Both the ZC and ECB have confirmed that there are no longer political issues preventing the countries from playing each other; but such a bilateral arrangement still remains stalled for the foreseeable future.”England for us is big money – the second biggest behind India,” Mukuhlani said. “We want England to tour us. It’s a conversation we’ve had for many years. There is great willingness from the ECB, and there have been signs in recent times. But nothing tangible has ever happened on their end. But we know they – like other countries – are struggling to find gaps in the schedule.”Mukuhlani said he would advocate through the working group for countries touring South Africa to make a stopover in Zimbabwe; even as England last month were in South Africa for a three-match ODI series, but won’t be returning there until 2026-27. He also planned to propose annual triangular or quadrangular white-ball series during April-May for countries with limited or no players competing in the IPL, such as Zimbabwe and Pakistan.”I’ve been trying to raise these issues for a long time, so hopefully now there is a proper platform to air them,” Mukuhlani said of the working group.Afghanistan are set to end a two-year Test wait with a series in Bangladesh mid-year•Abu Dhabi Cricket

Unlike Zimbabwe, Ireland play England imminently with a one-off Test scheduled in June at Lord’s. Cricket Ireland administrators had hoped it would become an annual fixture in the English summer, but this year’s match remains Ireland’s only Test against England, India or Australia through to 2027. Before that fixture, they will be breaking a four-year drought in the format when they meet Bangladesh in a one-off Test in Dhaka in April.”Our players are keen [to play Tests], but we have to be realistic,” Ireland’s ICC board director Ross McCollum said.Ireland’s only home Test was their debut in the format against Pakistan in 2018 which cost around a million Euros; and they aren’t scheduled to host a Test until the middle of next year against Zimbabwe.”With the budget we have, it is much easier to play away,” McCollum said. “Our annual turnover is around 10-12 million [Euros], so it’s a sizeable chunk out of that to host Tests. Ideally we want to play Test cricket. But only a few countries are financially able to play Test cricket and can put bums on seats.”While they strive for more Test opportunities, these smaller nations realise that an expanded WTC remains unlikely.”I think [WTC] is important because it creates context,” McCollum said. “Ideally it would have been expanded to 12 members, and I would have liked to have seen two leagues with promotion and relegation. But some countries didn’t want it because they might have fallen into relegation, and 12 teams in one division is too hard because of the crammed calendar.”Afghanistan, meanwhile, are set to end a two-year Test wait with a series in Bangladesh scheduled for mid-year. Their FTP is marked by a historic tour of Australia in 2026, which includes a one-off Test, but relations between the two countries are currently frayed. CA recently pulled out of an ODI series against Afghanistan set for March due to the Taliban’s ban on university education for girls. It was met with fierce condemnation from the Afghanistan Cricket Board and their players, including Rashid Khan, who threatened to boycott the BBL. But amid the politicking, Afghanistan’s future is murky beyond the playing field, as the sport’s administrators grapple with the apparent erosion of women’s cricket development since the Taliban seized control. The Afghanistan issue is set to be debated at the ICC meetings next month.

Celtic eyeing bid for £8m+ teen after Hoops wowed by his technical ability

Celtic are one of the clubs who are thought to be interested in signing a teenage forward with a big future this summer, according to a new transfer rumour.

Celtic smarting after Rangers defeat

Brendan Rodgers’ side had a great opportunity to effectively end the Scottish Premiership title race as a contest on Sunday when they hosted Rangers at Parkhead.

Frustratingly, though, Celtic were beaten 3-2 by their biggest rivals, even though it looked like they might pull off a remarkable comeback after recovering from going two goals down. Instead, it was the Gers who found the winner, though, on a bitterly disappointing afternoon.

There is no reason for Hoops supporters to be overly despondent, however, with Rodgers’ men still 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, closing in on yet another league crown, despite Sunday’s result.

Once the summer transfer window arrives, Celtic will be looking to add to their squad, in order to retain a freshness within it, and they may target both experienced heads and young players with bright futures. One individual in the latter category has now been linked with a switch to Parkhead.

Celtic eyeing move for £8m+ teenage forward

According to Le Republicain Sportif, Celic are eyeing a move for exciting young Nantes winger Herba Guirassy at the end of the season in a deal that could cost €10m (£8.4m).

The 18-year-old is also wanted by Leeds United, who no doubt see him as a good addition if they seal a return to the Premier League in May, and both clubs have been impressed with his “impressive technical skills” and how they “view his potential as a major asset for the future”.

Celtic manager BrendanRodgersbefore the match

Guirassy may be something of an unknown to lots of Celtic fans, given his age, but he is already proving to be an impressive performer for Nantes, having an impact that belies his tender years.

He has scored twice in Ligue 1 this season, making a total of 15 appearances in the competition, and he has netted three times in 17 outings for the French side overall.

Not only that, but Guirassy has scored 24 goals in 36 games for Nantes’ Under-19s, highlighting his prolific nature at youth team level.

While the winger may not be seen as an immediate starter by Rodgers next season, it is always important that Celtic bring in emerging talent, rather than simply focusing on players who can improve the first team from the off.

Worse than Schlupp: 4/10 dud had his worst game in a Celtic shirt

That said, Guirassy has already shown that he can hold his own in one of Europe’s five biggest leagues, so if he came straight in and made an impact for the Hoops straight away, that would be a bonus.

He was unbeaten on 51 at lunch with the scoreboard reading 108 for two from 23 overs. The afternoon session saw Davies and Hain progressing serenely against an impotent looking Somerset attack on a pitch that appeared to offer little seam movement.Skipper Lewis Gregory had turned to Leach as early as the 15th over, but the England left-arm spinner found it hard to stem the run-rate as Davies and Hain batted positively.Davies moved to a chanceless ton with a single off Leach, having looked untroubled in facing 140 balls and extending his boundary count to 17 fours and a six.He and the equally comfortable Hain had taken their third-wicket stand to 133 in 34.1 overs when it was broken by Leach.Davies looked to increase the tempo with a reverse sweep and only succeeded in dragging the ball onto his stumps. It was 203 for three and the error was compounded with only a couple of runs added as Dan Mousley fell lbw to Leach for two.Hain had been content to play second fiddle to Davies, but when Craig Overton was introduced for a new spell from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End, he produced a classic cover drive to register his fifth boundary.Ed Barnard helped Hain add 31, contributing 19 on his Warwickshire debut before being bowled by Siddle playing inside the line. All the while Hain was staying rock-like, reaching his fifty with his sixth boundary, a sweetly-timed back-foot shot through the covers off Gregory, He had faced 140 balls, the same number as Davies required to reach three figures.Burgess secured a first batting point for Warwickshire with a flashing cut for four off Gregory, taking the total to 253 for five.Burgess then edged Leach between wicketkeeper James Rew and first slip at catchable height, taking advantage of the narrow escape by lofting the next delivery for four as Warwickshire closed in on Somerset’s first innings total. They were three runs ahead by the time the second new ball was taken. It had little effect and the game looked to be meandering towards a draw following the first day washout when, with the floodlights on at the Cooper Associates County Ground, the umpires took the players off at 6.35pm.

O time ‘reserva’ contou com John; Auro, Yalle, Bauermann e Diogo Correia; Vinicius Balieiro, Camacho e Lucas Barbosa; Jhojan Julio, Ângelo e Angulo.
