Chelsea now battling Barcelona for "warrior" £25m defender who pocketed Leao

Chelsea have now joined the race for a £25m right-back, but they are set to face competition for his signature from Barcelona and Liverpool, according to a report.

Reece James back to his best

There is arguably little reason for the Blues to make a move for a new right-back this summer, given that they are well-stocked in that area of the pitch, with Reece James now showing signs he could be back to his best after several injury setbacks.

James returned to the England team for the first time in two-and-a-half years against Latvia, and the 25-year-old put in a top-quality performance, opening the scoring in the Three Lions’ comprehensive 3-0 victory.

That said, Enzo Maresca may want to err on the side of caution, given that his captain is very susceptible to injuries, and there has also been speculation about Malo Gusto’s future, with Liverpool shortlisting the right-back as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As such, a new right-back may be required in the summer transfer window, and Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, according to a report from Caught Offside.

AC Milan make £33m bid for Chelsea star; confident deal will be done

The Blues have now received an offer for a player Enzo Maresca called “fantastic” earlier this season.

ByDominic Lund Mar 24, 2025

Liverpool and Barcelona are said to be in fierce competition for Read’s signature, with the Merseyside club looking set to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold amid interest from Real Madrid.

Manchester United and Atlético Madrid are also named as potential suitors for the defender, but Feyenoord should be in a strong negotiating position, given that he remains contracted until 2028, meaning they could hold out for €25m – €30m (£21m – £25m)

Read impressing in the Champions League

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig lauded the 18-year-old for his performances in both legs of Feyenoord’s Champions League tie against AC Milan earlier this season, while also branding the teenager a “warrior” of a defender.

The youngster was faced with the difficult task of dealing with left-winger Rafael Leao, but he managed to keep the Portugal international quiet across the two legs, helping his side to a clean sheet with a solid performance in the first encounter.

The starlet has also been impressive in an attacking sense this season, picking up six assists in 17 Eredivisie outings, indicating that he is a well-rounded full-back.

Read’s performances for Feyenoord suggest he could be a fantastic long-term addition for the Blues, however, there are question marks over how much game time he would receive, should Gusto stay at Chelsea and James remain injury-free.

FICA president Sthalekar: men's calendar 'reaching a point where things may break'

The women’s game is some way away from such a situation, and “we have to nip things in the bud before it gets too big,” Sthalekar says

Mohammad Isam23-May-2023

“Ideally, we want a strong competition internationally where countries want their best players to play against each other”•Daily Star

Lisa Sthalekar, the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA) president, is concerned that the men’s international cricket calendar could reach breaking point soon if solutions aren’t found quickly. There is the matter of franchise T20 leagues taking over larger chunks of the calendar with each passing year, and also the reports of ongoing informal discussions between IPL franchise owners and international cricketers about long-term contracts.”The game is changing at a rapid rate. These conversations have been happening for a while behind closed doors [between the ICC, the cricket boards and FICA]. We are getting to a point where things may break,” Sthalekar, in Dhaka for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh, said. “I know that the ICC is speaking to the national boards. We are speaking to the ICC as well. We have to wait and see how that happens.Related

Is it already too late to sort out the balance of cricket's formats?

IPL teams and international stars in informal contract talks

“We all see the benefit of T20 cricket. We understand players have a small window to maximise their earnings. A lot of our players are enjoying playing bilateral cricket, ICC events and the T20 leagues. We understand that the men’s calendar is getting quite big. We are urging the ICC and national boards to come together because it is not a solution that can be solved straight away. Certainly, the players would like to play a role in that, to see if there’s a way forward for everyone to have their cake and eat it as well.”Heath Mills, FICA’s executive chairman, had last month confirmed that a lot of such informal contract discussions have taken place between the IPL team owners and players from at least five countries.Sthalekar said that the national boards would want to keep their best players for international cricket, with the FICA trying to make decision-making easier for the players so that they are not forced to choose.”The challenge is not for FICA; it is the national boards wanting to keep their players to play for the country,” Sthalekar said. “Ideally, we want a strong competition internationally where countries want their best players to play against each other. We are seeing a number of leagues come up, which clash with bilateral cricket.”Men’s calendar is getting pretty full. We are working with the ICC. We are happy to work with the national boards. We represent a big proportion of players that travel around the world. We want to make their decisions easier so that they don’t have to choose one or the other.”Sthalekar: Women’s cricket ‘can learn some lessons from the men’s calendar’The same is not the issue, at the moment, with women’s cricket where T20 leagues are yet to break into the playing calendar in a big way. Sthalekar would like it to remain that way.”People have been crying out for the WPL for a long time. It was very successful. The appetite was great. Crowds came in, the broadcast numbers were excellent,” she said. “The great thing is that female players can earn a decent living playing the game. When I was playing – I retired ten years ago – I had to have a full-time job [outside the game]. It is no longer the case for a lot of cricketers. Obviously, there’s still a long way to go.”Ideally we would like to see the women’s calendar fit in T20 leagues, bilaterals and ICC events so that players don’t have to choose one or the other. We can learn some lessons from the men’s calendar. We have to nip things in the bud before it gets too big.”Sthalekar’s Bangladesh visit will include a meeting with some of the leading women’s cricketers, including national captain Nigar Sultana and star quick bowler Jahanara Alam.

A Série B é assim.

Michael Pepper continued his Vitality Blast form as his 48 and Sam Cook’s four-for set up a five-wicket victory for Essex against Sussex Sharks.Pepper was the Eagles’ top scorer in 2022 with 439 runs and has belatedly started 2023, after a finger injury, with 63 against Somerset and a stylish 48 from 26 balls at Chelmsford.Fast bowler Cook had helped restrict the Sharks to 147 with 4 for 20 despite Ravi Bopara’s 50, before Pepper and Adam Rossington broke the chase with 76 for the second wicket.Matt Critchley and Daniel Sams completed the win with 31 balls to spare as Sussex were condemned to a fourth straight defeat, as Essex chalked up their third victory from five matches. In the chase, Dan Lawrence was caught at mid-on second ball but Pepper and Rossington got the Eagles off to a flier with 77 runs coming in the powerplay. Henry Crocombe was Rossington’s victim with a variety of scoops and pulls to and over the boundary in a 21-run over.Nathan McAndrew also was sprayed for 21 at the other end in a 10-ball over with Pepper using his crease to create angles to crash four fours.Rossington flamingoed his fourth six but his stay ended when he turned Tymal Mills around the corner to short leg, before Robin Das and Paul Walter followed quickly.Pepper popped Bopara back over his head but Shadab Khan pinned him lbw on the reverse sweep. But Critchley and Sams eased to the finish line with a 45-run stand.Sussex chose to bat and lost Toms Clark, Haines and Alsop in the powerplay but Bopara steadied things with Shadab Khan and Michael Burgess.Bopara played 67 home T20 matches for Essex, having played from the inaugural 2003 season to 2019, with all but one coming at the Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford. He knows the dimensions of the ground better than most.On this occasion he targeted the leg side boundary on the Doug Insole Pavilion side, dragging Ben Allison for six from outside the off stump before to slog sweeps off Simon Harmer. He added 35 with Shadab, and after the Pakistani was bowled by Walter’s first ball, Burgess helped bring 40 in 24 balls.Bopara’s 46th T20 fifty came in 30 balls but he departed when Shane Snater grabbed some air to catch at long-on.Sussex would only score another 33 in the last six overs as Critchley had James Coles and McAndrew in the 16th over, Cook returned four-for as he had Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Burgess caught in the same over.Sams got the wicket his tight bowling deserved when Mills chipped to a diving Harmer at cover as Sussex were bowled out for 147 with three balls unused.

Everton must rue losing "special" star worth even more than Branthwaite

Everton have been a day late and a dollar short far too often in recent memory, but things are beginning to look up. David Moyes brings with him a sort of confidence, exuding a winning mentality that has been absorbed by players desperate for something more.

While the summer transfer window will bring Everton, who are all but certain to be plying their trade in the Premier League next year, a sense of clarity, fans will hope that incoming Director of Football Angus Kinnear can ship out the deadwood and ensure the signings made hit the ground running.

Everton managerDavidMoyescelebrates after the match

He’ll do his best, no doubt. However, the Toffees may also need to cash in on one or two of their prized possessions in order to make the sweeping changes anticipated. Sadly, one such player might be Jarrad Branthwaite.

Jarrad Branthwaite's Everton future

Branthwaite is probably Everton’s best player; certainly, he’s the most valuable in the present market. Interest in his signature was rife last season, Manchester United launching a succession of bids but failing to even brush the £75m ballpark that Farhad Moshiri and Kevin Thelwell deemed just for the centre-back’s sale.

Everton are within their rights to demand a king’s ransom for Branthwaite’s departure. After all, the 22-year-old has been described as “pretty special” by Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher.

And rightly so. In the Premier League last season, Branthwaite won 67% of his ground duels, as per Sofascore. This year, that success rate has risen to a staggering 74% average. At 6 foot 5, he’s commanding and imperious in his defending, bearing the mark of a future superstar.

He’s one of the very best and Everton’s most valuable player right now, but there’s actually another rising star in the English top flight worth more than Branthwaite.

That man is Anthony Gordon, not the flavour of the month on either half of Merseyside right now.

The ex-Everton star now worth more than Branthwaite

Part of the Newcastle United squad (albeit not featuring at Wembley due to suspension) that defeated Liverpool in this month’s Carabao Cup final, Gordon has gone from strength to strength since leaving Everton.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

But while Toffees will have allowed a smirk at Gordon-involved celebrations, seeing the Reds in ruin, the England international is not very well liked at Goodison after forcing his way out in January 2023.

Frank Lampard had been dismissed and Sean Dyche appointed in his stead, with the upheaval and overall turbulence at Everton seemingly convincing Gordon that he needed to jump ship. And so, having handed in a transfer request, he signed for the Magpies in a deal worth £45m.

Newcastle’s Player of the Year for 2023/24, Gordon came close to moving back to Merseyside before the current campaign kicked off. Indeed, Liverpool were perusing the market for a left-sided forward and the Toon needed to raise money due to PSR complications.

They circumvented through other means, largely because Newcastle chiefs placed an incredible £100m price tag on the Three Lions winger, which would have seen him become one of the most expensive players in Premier League history if acted upon from Anfield, very much above Branthwaite in that regard.

Iliman Ndiaye’s success this season after joining from Marseille last summer has put Gordon’s frustrations firmly to bed, but it’s still disappointing to think he was so quick to flee after spending a decade at the club, joining from Liverpool’s academy aged 11.

Gordon is a “special” player, as said by producer Andrew Musgrove, and losing his quality remains a bitter pill to swallow.

Given that his performances have led to claims of a potential £100m transfer fee, it’s one Everton will rue for a while. It could have been so much more.

Sunil Narine pulls out of Finals Day with Surrey to focus on Major League Cricket

Surrey ‘disappointed and frustrated’ as allrounder opts against 9000-mile round trip from USA

Matt Roller13-Jul-2023Surrey were “disappointed and frustrated” to learn late on Wednesday evening that Sunil Narine has ruled himself out of Vitality Blast Finals Day on Saturday, abandoning a planned 9,000-mile round trip from Dallas to Birmingham. ESPNcricinfo revealed on Tuesday that Surrey were expecting Narine to return from his Major League Cricket (MLC) commitments with LA Knight Riders in order to play for them this weekend, before returning to Dallas immediately after Finals Day at Edgbaston. But the club said in a statement on Thursday that they had been informed on Wednesday night about a change in Narine’s plans. Narine will instead remain in the USA, leaving Surrey with only one overseas player for Saturday’s showpiece in Australia’s Sean Abbott.Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, said: “We were aware when we signed Sunil for the T20 Blast that he could be unavailable for Finals Day due to his pre-signed contract with the Knight Riders in the MLC.Related

“However, all of the subsequent conversations with the various parties since he arrived for the group games and leading into this week were that we would have him back for Saturday, so it’s disappointing and frustrating to lose a player of Sunil’s quality at such late notice.”Kieron Pollard, Narine’s long-time team-mate and close friend, jokingly suggested to ESPNcricinfo that Surrey – the county he represented last year, alongside Narine – should have laid on a private jet to ensure his availability.”Maybe they should have sent some private jets for him, make him comfortable and then he might have been able to do it pretty comfortably!” Pollard said. “It’s totally up to the individual how you plan out your contracts, because there are going to be tournaments that are overlapping.”ECB regulations require players to be registered with a county in the group stages of a competition in order to be available for the knockout stages, so Surrey will not be permitted an overseas replacement for Narine.Dan Moriarty, their left-arm spinner, played his first Blast game of the season in their quarter-final victory over Lancashire and will likely retain his spot. Cam Steel, the legspinning allrounder, is the closest thing Surrey have to a like-for-like replacement for Narine, while Dan Worrall and Jordan Clark may also come into contention.”I genuinely think it’s a wonderful opportunity,” Gareth Batty, Surrey’s coach, told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ve got a great squad. The worst part of my job is telling very fine players that they’re not playing. I hate it. It is the worst thing. It’s another opportunity to tell someone that they are playing.”I truly believe that we have lots of people that can play at any point across any competition and be a real success. Obviously Sunny is a wonderful player, but we’ll have a wonderful player coming in.”
