Bradburn: Pakistan don't get to play a lot of the top nations

Pakistan coach stopped short of saying they are an isolated team, but did point out their lack of experience in Indian conditions

Arthur: ‘Unfair to start a witch-hunt on Babar’

Pakistan’s coach Grant Bradburn stopped short of calling them an isolated team in international cricket, but did point out the lack of experience against big teams and in India as they fight to stay alive and hope for other results to go their way in the World Cup.After winning the first two matches, against Netherlands and Sri Lanka, Pakistan have lost four in a row, including against archrivals India, and stand on the brink of elimination. Not only do they need to keep winning every remaining match but also hope one of the four teams in the lead right now slips down.Bradburn was asked what went wrong with Pakistan after they were once among the favourites, especially till Naseem Shah got injured during the Asia Cup. “Look I’m not sure where you get favourites from because there are 10 teams in this tournament, there’s 150 cricketers who are the best on the planet,” he said. “In terms of the ICC rankings, we know they are skewed because we don’t get to play India, we don’t get to play a lot of the top nations who haven’t been to Pakistan of late.”We were No. 5 in April, we became No. 1 recently before the tournament, and that might be where you term the phrase favourites. But we’re realistic. We have not been the best in the world as yet, so which highlights where we are in this tournament right now. We have no divine right to beat anyone in this tournament. We have to play quality cricket, and we have to put all three departments of our game together.Related

Bradburn: Adopting aggressive style of play 'a demand, not a request'

World Cup trends: Where have all the thrillers gone?

Why middling scores make for the best kind of ODI

“We are desperate to bring joy to our nation. We are desperate to make our nation very proud of this cricket team. And we are also realistic in the knowledge that we haven’t put all departments of our game together over the last four games but four losses does not define who we are as players, as coaches or a team, So we’re determined now to focus on what we can control and that is putting our best on the park in these last three games and then leaving that to fate as – to determine the remainder of the tournament for Pakistan.”If you consider India, Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa the “top teams” in ODI cricket – England are defending champions after all – Pakistan have played 19 ODIs against them between the World Cups. Sri Lanka and West Indies have played more than that. New Zealand’s aggregate is lower but they are also one of them. Among teams playing this tournament, only Bangladesh and Netherlands have played less against the “top teams”.Pakistan go into their match against Bangladesh on Tuesday on the back of four losses•ICC via Getty Images

Asked if that, coupled with Pakistan’s players not playing the IPL, makes them feel isolated, Bradburn answered in the negative, but also did point out the lack of experience in these conditions. “No, we don’t feel isolated or intimidated by that,” Bradburn said. “Mickey [Arthur] and I, when we took over this team in April, six months ago, we recognised that the team was playing a gear or two below where we wanted the team to be playing in terms of the brand, because we know the brand of cricket that is winning against quality teams is a more dynamic brand than perhaps, we were playing. So, we set a new course in April this year.”So, it hasn’t been a big lead-in to this major tournament for us. Ideally preparation for a tournament like this starts four years ago. We started six months ago and changed direction in the way that we want to play the game of cricket , especially the one-day brand. We’ve shown some positive signs of that over the last six months, and as I’ve mentioned, during this tournament, we’re very proud of some of the performances that we’ve put on the park.”It’s taking a little bit longer than we were hoping, but we want to play a dynamic brand that matches the challenge of the conditions we’re playing in. So, this tournament is foreign condition for us. None of our players have played here before. Every venue is a new one, including this one. So, we’ve done our homework meticulously on our opposition, on our venues that we’re playing at, and we’re prepared very, very well for each and every encounter. But the reality is that each and every venue is a new one for us and we don’t feel disadvantaged at all in terms of the knowledge, the quality, the skill, the backing that we have for this team of cricketers.”We’ve been consistent with our selection; we’ve backed our players and we still back our players to perform and show the brand of cricket that we want to play that matches the task at hand and also, we’re the best in the world. And we’ve acknowledged over the past period of time that we’re not at that level that we want to be, but we’re certainly pushing hard to improve our brand of cricket because we know that the skills are within our players.”Pakistan’s fast bowlers haven’t found a lot of swing in the World Cup•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan’s strength has historically been – and presently is – fast bowling but, as mentioned here, fast bowlers with prior IPL experience have done much better in this tournament. Bradburn did speak of the challenges his fast bowlers faced in the absence of swing.”Look, we haven’t got on a roll in this tournament, and we understand that it’s fine lines here in Indian conditions,” Bradburn said. “And particularly, I would say, with our bowlers, we’re renowned for having a fantastic group of fast bowlers, both here and at home. We have a great resource of fast-bowling talent in Pakistan. We do rely on swing, but we haven’t experienced too much swing here. The balls are different. The conditions are different, and certainly the ball tends to wear a lot quicker here.”So, you know, we’re learning that on the fly as well so therefore our lines have been different that we’ve been bowling and we haven’t put enough balls in good areas really to create the pressure that we want and to take the wickets.”Lucknow, Delhi and Dharamsala have been the venues that have helped seam bowlers in this tournament, but Pakistan don’t have a single match there. The first match played in Kolkata, where Netherlands upset Bangladesh, will be cause for optimism as the Netherlands bowlers drew disconcerting bounce from the surface.Bradburn said the mood within the camp was great and there were no tensions among the players as reported. “The environment is great. There’s never any issue in terms of the environment. We have a wonderful group of players who are very determined to bring joy to their nation, play a quality, exciting brand of cricket for our fans and to make our country and our families proud of the performances that we put on the park. This is a very tight group and feel free to wander down towards the dressing room and watch the training today you will see a very good vibe.”

Cummins curious on ICC not allowing Khawaja's dove logo

Australia skipper supports Khawaja and sees no difference between a dove logo representing human rights and Labuschagne’s approved eagle sticker that is a religious display

Australia captain Pat Cummins says there is no difference between Usman Khawaja displaying a dove logo on his shoe and bat to raise awareness of humanitarian issues and teammate Marnus Labuschagne displaying an eagle on his bat which signifies a personal religious message, after the ICC denied Khawaja’s application to display the logo during the Boxing Day Test.Khawaja made an application to the ICC to display a small dove holding an olive branch on his shoe and bat during the Test match which is a reference to article one of the Universal declaration of Human Rights that reads, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”But despite being cleared by Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association to display it, the ICC denied his application with an ICC spokesperson stating that, “Personal messages of this nature are not allowed as per Clause F of the Clothing and Equipment Regulations, which can be found on the ICC Playing Conditions page. The ICC is supportive of players using their platforms outside of the playing arena to promote human rights, peace and equality and would encourage him to continue to use alternative platforms.”Related

Labuschagne displays the symbol of an eagle on the back of his bats which represents a verse from the bible and has long been allowed to have the sticker on his bat in international cricket. Almost every player in the Australian team, including Khawaja, also have multiple advertising stickers on their bats that represent different companies including their bat/equipment sponsor and a secondary personal sponsor, which are allowed under ICC rules.Usman Khawaja’s attempt to wear a dove logo on his shoes was denied by the ICC•AFP/Getty Images

Speaking on Christmas Day, 24 hours out from the start of the second Test against Pakistan at the MCG, Cummins said he saw no difference between Labuschagne displaying a religious reference and Khawaja’s attempt to display a logo referring to the Universal declaration of Human Rights.”Not really, no – I don’t know the ins and outs of the application, but I think it is pretty vanilla, a dove,” Cummins said.”We really support Uzzy, I think he’s standing up for what he believes and I think he’s doing it really respectfully.”All lives are equal and I don’t think that’s very offensive, and I’d say the same about the dove. That’s Uzzy. He can hold his head high the way he’s gone about it, but there’s rules in place, so I believe the ICC have said they’re not going to approve that. They make up the rules and you’ve got to accept it.”The ruling has raised the ire of former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding who has accused the ICC of double standards.”If it had been most other organisations that showed some semblance of consistency with their attitude and behaviour on issues I could claim surprise, but not them,” Holding told the . “Once again they show their hypocrisy and lack of moral standing as an organisation.”Khawaja was charged by the ICC with breaching the same Clause F of the Clothing and Equipment Regulations after wearing a black armband during the first Test against Pakistan in Perth. He said he would challenge the charge having told the governing body it was for a “personal bereavement” but added that he won’t continue to wear one in the MCG Test.Khawaja wore the armband having initially planned to take the field with writing on his shoes which he had worn in training stating “all lives are equal” and “freedom is a human right” to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.Speaking at the MCG last Friday, Khawaja said that he did not believe ICC were implementing their own regulations consistently.”They asked me on day two [in Perth] what it was for and told them it was for a personal bereavement,” he said of the armband. “I never ever stated it was for anything else. The shoes were a different matter, I’m happy to say that. The armband makes no sense to me. I followed all the regulations, past precedents, guys that put stickers on their bats, names on their shoes, done all sorts of things in the past without ICC approval and never been reprimanded.”I respect the ICC and the rules and regulations they have. I will be asking them and contesting they make it fair and equitable for everyone and they have consistency in how they officiate. That consistency hasn’t been done yet. I was very open and honest with that. I’ll deal with that with the ICC.”There was no official statement when Khawaja wore the armband on the first day in Perth, but at the time it was understood to be in relation to the video he had posted on social media after being told he could not show the messages on his shoes.

Kohli and Rohit return to India's T20I squad for Afghanistan series

Sanju Samson returns as well, while Shreyas was rested and Rahul not selected

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jan-20246:24

Is the Rohit-Kohli T20I selection a step forward or back?

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have returned to India’s T20I squad after an absence of more than a year from the format for the three-match series against Afghanistan, India’s last T20I series before the T20 World Cup in June.Rohit has been named captain of the squad while those who led the side in his absence, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, are injured and unavailable for selection.Rohit and Kohli have not played T20Is since India’s semi-final defeat to England in the T20 World Cup in November 2022, choosing to prioritise Test cricket and ODIs in the lead-up to the World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup in 2023. Their selection now, which comes after India’s chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar flew to South Africa during the New Year’s Test in Cape Town, means that both players are back in India’s plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.India have mostly been led by Hardik in T20Is since the 2022 T20 World Cup, and Suryakumar stood in as captain after Hardik injured his ankle during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Suryakumar led India in the five-match T20I series at home against Australia and the three T20Is in South Africa in December but has also been ruled out for a couple of months because of an ankle injury he picked up in South Africa. Both Hardik and Suryakumar are expected to return for the IPL in March.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Ruturaj Gaikwad hasn’t been picked as he continues to nurse a finger injury that he picked up in South Africa last month. There is no place for KL Rahul in the 15-member squad, while Ishan Kishan has opted out, citing the need for a break to help him refocus on his game. Kishan also missed the two-Test series in South Africa for the same reason.Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma, who was part of the T20I series against both the Australia and South Africa recently, retained his spot and Sanju Samson, who hasn’t been in India’s T20I plans since touring Ireland with a second-string squad in August last year, comes in as his back-up. Samson struck his maiden international century during the ODI leg of the South Africa tour last month.Mumbai allrounder Shivam Dube also gets another crack in T20Is following an impressive IPL 2023 where he was Chennai Super Kings’ spin-hitter in the middle overs. Dube was most recently part of India’s second-string squad that clinched the Asian Games gold in Hangzhou in October last year. From there, he went into the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy and produced some useful cameos for Mumbai batting down the order. His role with the ball, though, was minimal.Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested keeping in mind their workloads ahead of the upcoming five-Test series at home against England. Also missing are Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja, who was vice-captain during the South Africa T20Is that India drew 1-1. Jadeja missed the first Test against South Africa because of a neck spasm.Deepak Chahar, who was named for the South Africa T20Is but didn’t take part due to a personal emergency, misses out altogether, with the selectors continuing with Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and Mukesh Kumar. Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi form the spin attack. Kuldeep, who picked a five-for in his most recent T20I in South Africa, picked up three wickets for Uttar Pradesh in the first-round Ranji Trophy fixture against Kerala.Following the three T20Is against Afghanistan on January 11, 14 and 17, India host England from January 25 to March 11, after which the players will disperse to join their respective IPL teams for the 2024 season, which will conclude only a couple of weeks before the T20 World Cup begins on June 1.India’s T20I squad for series vs AfghanistanRohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Mukesh Kumar

IPL to T20 World Cup: South Africa to keep close eye on Nortje and Coetzee

Both the quick bowlers are returning from injuries and are in the fray for selection to the T20 World Cup squad

Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee will both be under close scrutiny from South Africa’s white-ball coach, Rob Walter, at this year’s IPL, as he looks to the tournament to firm up selection for the T20 World Cup.Both Nortje and Coetzee are returning from injuries that have sidelined them for months, and are expected to get game time at the IPL, which could be used to assess their readiness for a major tournament. Nortje and Coetzee are two of at least eight seam bowlers South Africa could include – the others being Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Ottniel Baartman and Lizaad Williams – in their 15-player touring party.Nortje has only just returned to action in the CSA’s T20 domestic tournament after last playing in September 2023 in a home series against Australia. He suffered a stress fracture in his back, which kept him out of the ODI World Cup and the entire home international summer. In his comeback match for Warriors against Kwa-Zulu Inland, he opened the bowling and delivered four economical overs which cost just 12 runs, but went wicketless. There is a possibility he will also play a second match for Warriors this Sunday, as he remains in South Africa awaiting the birth of his first child, which is imminent. Nortje will travel to the IPL afterwards.Related

Coetzee has already departed for India, where he has been placed in the care of the Mumbai Indians medical staff as he recovers from a groin injury. He last played in the Boxing Day Test against India, where he developed pelvic inflammation and was unable to take part in the next match, the SA20 or the opening rounds of the domestic T20 tournament. It is expected that he will not play early on in the IPL either, with a view to getting match time later in the event. All South Africa’s nationally contracted players were obliged to feature in the first two rounds of the CSA domestic T20 tournament – apart from David Miller, who was given time off for his wedding, and Quinton de Kock, who was allowed a break for personal reasons. Both Miller and de Kock will be in action at the IPL, which will also include Rabada, Jansen, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Tristan Stubbs, Dewald Brevis, Donovan Ferreira, Nandre Burger, Rilee Rossouw and Faf du Plessis, all of whom are up for T20 World Cup selection. Ngidi, who was due to travel to the tournament, has been ruled out with a back injury, and will recover at home. However, those are not the only players Walter will have to monitor. The CSA T20 Challenge runs until the end of April and has Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, Bjorn Fortuin, Baartman and Williams involved, and all of them are also in contention for the tournament.South Africa will name their T20 World Cup squad towards the end of April and will play three T20Is against West Indies before the competition starts on June 2.
