Flamengo e Independiente Del Valle voltam a decidir Recopa no Maracanã

Se o empate acontecer, as semifinais do Carioca serão:

– Fluminense* x Volta Redonda
– Flamengo* x Vasco

Terceiro no tripé.

Wellington's winds mess with Sri Lanka's quicks

Devon Conway said the conditions on day one at the Basin Reserve were the windiest he had ever played in

The immensely blustery conditions at the Basin Reserve were likely the cause of the Sri Lanka seamers’ wayward lines and lengths on the opening day of the second Test in Wellington. Both the day’s top-scorer Devon Conway and Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach Dharshana Gamage agreed on this point, suggesting it was particularly difficult to bowl into the wind.A biting northwesterly whipped through the venue after rain had washed out the morning session’s play. The New Zealand MetService put the average wind speed in Wellington at close to 60kph during the late afternoon, with some gusts likely far more powerful than that. Players’ hats, sunglasses, and even the bails on top of the stumps kept being taken by gusts.Conway, who plays domestic cricket for Wellington Firebirds at the Basin Reserve, said these were the most severe winds he’d experienced at the ground on a playing day.”Today was the windiest conditions I’ve ever played in at the Basin,” Conway said. “There was a moment when both sets of bails fell off and they brought out heavy bails that I’d never seen before in my career. It would have been a real challenge for their bowlers and they were some tough conditions to play cricket in.”Early on, with a couple of their guys, I could see on their faces – they were thinking, ‘This is quite a challenge.’ And also the way they bowled at times, particularly into the wind, they missed their lengths and bowled slightly too full and gave you scoring opportunities.”Conway used his experience at the venue to make 78 off 108 balls, which formed the bedrock of New Zealand’s 155 for 2 when play stopped for bad light.”At the beginning the thing I did was to stand a little lower in my base, not to get pushed left and right by the wind,” Conway said. “And with my bat as well, when I was waiting for the bowler to bowl, I could feel it getting pushed away from my body, and up and down. It was sort of trying to stay nice and firm in my stance, and putting their bowlers under pressure by taking the wind into account. I understand it was a green surface, so I needed to make good decisions – leaving the balls I needed to leave, and attacking balls that were in my area.”Although New Zealand were scoreless for the first three overs of the innings, and had only made 20 after nine, Conway hit boundaries square of the wicket in particular as Sri Lanka’s bowlers strayed. He was striking at over 70 when he was eventually dismissed, making a mistake against the spin of Dhananjaya de Silva.”I’m very fortunate to call this my home – I’ve played a fair few four-day games for the Wellington Firebirds here,” Conway said. “I’ve taken a lot of experience from playing in those games. As you can see, on the first day, it’s more often than not pretty green here.”One thing you can do as a batter is flip that mindset, and keep a positive mindset throughout. For me personally, it’s about trying to go after balls that are in my area, not over-hit the ball, and trust the bounce, because there’s good bounce here on day one and day two. Leaving on length is something I try and incorporate into my plan.”Although the surface was green, Sri Lanka’s fast-bowling coach Gamage did not believe the track was as conducive to seam-bowling as it appeared.”It was a green top but we didn’t get that lateral movement like Christchurch, so it was flat conditions. They didn’t get that movement, so that’s why we didn’t do well in the first few hours. When you take the third session they improved a lot.”There was also dampness in the outfield following the morning’s substantial rains, however, and a wet ball may have prevented it from moving as much as it could have.

Gurbaz, Hasan Ali serve up the Islamabad United special

They blew Peshawar Zalmi away by six wickets, coasting to the 157 they required inside 15 overs

Danyal Rasool23-Feb-2023

Hasan Ali took three vital top order wickets•PCB

This was less of a game, more of a template. Islamabad United have been playing this sort of match for eight years, and when it clicks, no side can quite match their explosiveness. It clicked today in some style, with United blowing Peshawar Zalmi away by six wickets, coasting to the 157 they required inside 15 overs. Hasan Ali, returning to the side, was the star with the ball, taking three vital top order wickets to stymie Zalmi’s momentum. Then Rahmanullah Gurbaz stole the show with the bat, his 31-ball 62 seeing United post 80 in six overs, the highest Powerplay total at this year’s PSL.United won the toss and bowled, but for the first six overs, Zalmi were the only ones doing the winning. Mohammad Haris and Babar Azam took the attack to the new ball, and when they thumped Hasan for 17 in his first over, there was no indication his day would turn around. For six overs, there was a contrast in styles between Babar’s silky elegance and Haris’ raw power, but the impact they had in terms of run-scoring was strikingly similar. When the fielding restrictions ended, Haris had romped to 35 off 17, while Babar’s 34 had taken 19 deliveries.Shadab removed Haris in his first over, and Mubasir Khan cleaned up Saim Ayub with a flipper, but thereafter it was the Hasan show. Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Rovman Powell had their stumped rocked back with almost identical deliveries in a match-turning 10th over. There was a new, edgy send-off from Hasan to each batter as they went on their way, and United had pulled things back superbly. Jimmy Neesham fell in Hasan’s next over, and before long, Babar, having watched the drama happen from the other end, was forced to take matters into his own hands. He did as much as he could, but Zalmi needed a power hitter, and that’s not an aspect of the game Babar excels at. He farmed the strike and tried to find the boundaries, but couldn’t quite manage enough to give his side the big finish they needed against a fearsome batting line-up. The 156 they finished with felt well short.Gurbaz and Rassie van der Dussen guaranteed that it would be. There wasn’t much strike rotation, with Gurbaz looking for boundaries as often as possible. Gurbaz was clearing the fences with raw power while van der Dussen played arguably an even more infuriating innings from Zalmi’s perspective, manipulating the field craftily with reverse sweeps and finding the ropes with imperious frequency. No over in the first six saw fewer than 10 runs scored, and by the time the Powerplay ended, the asking rate was well under a run a ball.A touch of sloppiness in the field didn’t help matters for Zalmi. The hapless Neesham spilled three catches in the Powerplay, even though each was a devilishly hard chance. It was Usman Qadir who finally removed Gurbaz, but by then, he had hit Zalmi out of the game.Unlike Zalmi, United didn’t relent after the Powerplay. Van der Dussen was finding the gaps regularly, while Asif Ali’s raw power ensured this was only going to be a run-rate salvaging operation for Zalmi. Shadab and van der Dussen fell in those middle overs, but amidst that surfeit of boundaries, one barely noticed.Azam Khan would finish things off with a colossal six over midwicket, a fitting end to a performance so characteristic of United they may as well have copyrighted it.

Sri Lanka's top three fire to give them opening day honours in Chattogram

Medium-pacer Hasan Mahmud impressed on debut, picking two wickets, while Shakib also got one

On a dry surface that showed signs of turn from the get-go, Sri Lanka made use of arguably the best of the batting conditions to prop themselves up to 314 for 4 at the end of the opening day’s play of the second Test in Chattogram.Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva were at the crease at stumps on 34 and 15 respectively, though a bulk of the scoring was accomplished by their top three comprising Nishan Madushka, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis – the latter two falling narrowly short of their respective centuries. But on a day where the bowlers were forced to toil for large periods, and one where – apart from brief spells with the first and second new balls – the spinners looked most likely to extract something out of the surface, it was debutant seamer Hasan Mahmud that impressed the most, ending the day with figures of 2 for 64. Shakib Al Hasan on his return to the Test side had one as well.By the end of play Bangladesh were probing for more breakthroughs in an attempt to make inroads into Sri Lanka’s lengthy tail, however with the pitch set to deteriorate further, Sri Lanka will be pleased with the position they find themselves in.That said, had Bangladesh held on to all their chances, this might have been a day the hosts might have even edged.During the morning session both openers were reprieved with Mahmudul Hasan Joy spilling a straightforward chance at slip off Madushka, and Shakib misjudging a miscued Karunaratne hook at fine leg. In between there was also a missed direct hit opportunity that would have found Karunaratne well short. In this period it was the seamers that posed the most threat, with Mahmud in particular showing admirable control with the new ball and regularly clocking in the mid-130s. While he would have to wait until Sri Lanka were 210 runs in the black for his first Test scalp, he would have had one much earlier had Mahmudul held on.But once the ball got older and the potency of the seamers reduced, batting became easier – though the sometimes uneven bounce in the surface meant the Lankan batters were forced to wait for the bad balls to put away. A wicketless morning session, with scoring at a comfortable three an over, highlighted the favourable batting conditions. And while conditions would get better for the spinners in particular as the day wore on, much of Bangladesh’s early success was down to batter errors. The first was a run out, where Karunaratne seemed to call his partner through for a second before turning him back; the throw from the deep was a good one and Madushka was found well short. The second was courtesy a loose drive, which saw the former skipper drag on to his stumps and give Mahmud his maiden Test wicket.Despite these breakthroughs, Bangladesh were rarely allowed to build a head of steam with a string of successive partnerships forming the backbone of Sri Lanka’s batting effort. An opening stand of 96 was followed by stands of 114 and 53.It was only in the final session that the ball began to show natural variance for the spinners. After Mathews had pushed forward and edged an arm ball from Mehidy Hasan Miraz that evaded both keeper and slip, Kusal would not have such fortune. Pressing forward to one that gripped and bounced from Shakib, Kusal found himself surprised as it caught a high edge and flew low to Mehidy’s right at slip, who made no mistake with two hands. There were several more deliveries surrounding that period which caused uncertainty in the minds of the batters, beating both edges of the bat. But it was the new ball that brought the final breakthrough of day, as Hasan got one to rise sharply and take Mathews’ edge. But much like they had done throughout the day, the Lankan batters showed patience in negotiating any variance and punished the bad balls. With the nature of the surface proving volatile even this early in the game, they will be aware that one more large partnership might be all it takes to take a commanding grip of this game.

Better than Bowen: West Ham’s 73 touch man showed why he’s undroppable

West Ham managed a point against Bournemouth, having gone 1-0 down in the first half. Graham Potter’s side came out fighting in the second half, scoring in the 61st and 68th minute to take a 2-1 lead at the London Stadium.

However, Evanilson did manage to salvage a point for the Cherries, netting his second of the game to make it 2-2 in the 79th minute, with the points being shared.

Despite having more of the ball with 56% possession, West Ham only generated 0.65 xG in the match, creating one “big chance” and taking nine shots. In comparison, Andoni Iraola’s side generated 2.15 xG in the game, creating two “big chances” and taking 11 shots.

The second-half performance was much stronger by the Hammers, having seven of their nine shots in that second half, and it was the goalscorers, Niclas Füllkrug and Jarrod Bowen, who spurred the comeback.

Bowen's performance vs Bournemouth

Bowen scored the second goal, putting West Ham 2-1 up in the match. Whilst he started the game as a centre-forward, having a license to roam into both channels, Fullkrug’s introduction saw Bowen move to his natural right side, where he really began to come into his own.

The 28-year-old Hammers captain managed 52 touches in the game, taking four shots (only one on target) and completing two of his four dribble attempts. Bowen also won seven of his 15 ground duels in the game, working hard for his side, winning two tackles and making two interceptions.

Bowen’s goal was his ninth of the season, also providing seven assists in his 2,539 minutes played. But today’s game made one thing apparent, and it feels like West Ham could have one man who is even more undroppable than their captain at this point in time.

Why James Ward-Prowse is undroppable

James Ward-Prowse was recalled from his loan at the end of the January transfer window, having made just 10 appearances for Nottingham Forest. West Ham stated his return would offer “experience, depth and quality” to Potter’s side.

But his performance against Bournemouth proved exactly why he is more than extra depth and experience, as the midfielder controlled proceedings in the middle of the park, provided the assist for Fullkrug’s equaliser, and protected the Hammers back line, winning two of his three ground duels.

In recent weeks, Potter has shown faith in Ward-Prowse, quickly making him a regular starter in his side, giving the team a more progressive passer in the midfield, someone who can keep things ticking, but also a set-piece specialist, which can be an invaluable tool in the modern era of Premier League football.

Whilst Bowen is the club captain and top goalscorer, Ward-Prowse has shown his importance to the side, making them less predictable in their build-up, offering slightly more mobility in midfield (whilst it isn’t his biggest strength) and, of course, adding that set-piece threat.

Therefore, the former Southampton man should keep his place in the side and be considered undroppable by the manager heading into the final matches of the season.

Fewer touches than Raya: 5/10 star must never start for Arsenal again

With Arsenal’s adventures in Europe taking priority at the back end of the season, Mikel Arteta has used the last two Premier League games as opportunities to rotate his side.

The title will not be heading in the direction of the Emirates Stadium this season and the manager has clearly realised that too, opting to give his biggest stars some time off with that crunch tie with Real Madrid in mind.

Despite drawing 1-1 with Everton a week ago, that strategy certainly paid off in midweek after that remarkable victory over Real Madrid.

After two appearances as a sub, Bukayo Saka looked revitalised. His return to club action has been managed well.

That said, the club’s league form does leave much to be desired, winning two of their last seven league fixtures. It’s hardly a surprise the title is now but a dream.

So, with another 1-1 draw with Brentford this weekend amid more rotation, those on the fringes didn’t do a whole lot to stake their claim for more regular starts.

Arsenal's biggest underperformers against Brentford

It’s safe to say that Arsenal’s draw with Brentford was rather more sedate than the rip-roaring success of Tuesday night against Madrid.

That was summed up by the sheer number of changes to the Gunners’ teamsheet. In came the likes of Leandro Trossard, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney and Ethan Nwaneri, while goalscorer Thomas Partey started at right-back.

Nwaneri wasn’t able to dazzle as we know he so often can, but it wasn’t a bad performance. Tierney lasted just over an hour, scoring a memorable disallowed goal in the process, and coped well with the threat of Bees talisman Bryan Mbeumo.

However, as for Zinchenko and Trossard, they really did disappoint.

The latter did his best to get on the ball and create opportunities but he lacked goal threat and proved why Arteta has favoured Mikel Merino in that central striker berth since Kai Havertz’s injury.

Trossard did find the net against Everton a week ago but that marked his first league goal since the north London derby back in January.

Trossard had just five touches in the box on Saturday, far fewer than Gabriel Martinelli’s 11, with his display summed up well by GOAL who noted that it was another ‘ineffective display’, hence his 5/10 match rating.

Still, at least he wasn’t as ineffective as Zinchenko.

Zinchenko's performance in numbers vs Brentford

This has been a challenging and difficult season for the Ukrainian who hasn’t earned much game time at all.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Indeed, the 28-year-old has only actually played 11 times in the Premier League despite being in the squad on 25 occasions. He’s only started three league games too.

That’s hardly a surprise really when you consider Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival last summer and the emergence of Hale End superstar Myles Lewis-Skelly.

As a result, Zinchenko’s last two appearances have actually come in midfield. He starred in that position against PSV in the Champions League, starting in the Odegaard role and scoring a brilliant long-range effort in the first half.

While he dominated against the Dutch side, his influence was poor against Brentford. His display was rather summed up by a succession of first-half corners that he and Nwaneri wasted down the right.

Insistent on playing things short, the ball was played into Zinchenko who ultimately failed to really take control of the situation on more than one occasion.

His lack of influence was summed up by the fact that his touch count of 36 was nine fewer than goalkeeper David Raya’s tally. Grim reading indeed.

To make matters worse, the former Manchester City star failed to provide a key pass, register a cross or complete a dribble.

While the PSV game was a reminder of his qualities, this was a reminder of why Arsenal must cash in on him in the summer. GOAL handed him a 5/10 rating, noting that he was ‘rather quiet’.

Providing the Londoners see off Madrid again in a few days, it’s likely Arteta will ring the changes regularly in the Premier League but Zinchenko shouldn’t start again.

At left-back, Tierney staked more of a claim to feature when Calafiori or Lewis-Skelly aren’t selected while the midfield still has plenty of options who could be chosen ahead of him.

This may well have been his last start in Arsenal colours.
