Bigger talent than Anderson: Newcastle have the "next English superstar"

Newcastle United’s summer business looked very different compared to recent years.

After seasons of navigating the tightrope of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the Magpies were finally able to spend again, but only after some tough lessons in financial housekeeping.

The arrival of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £69m, which paved the way for Alexander Isak’s British-record £125m move to Liverpool, was the headline act of the window.

Yoane Wissa eventually followed in a £55m deal, capping off a remarkable string of forward moves in the window, while Jacob Ramsay, Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale and Anthony Elanga added depth elsewhere.

It was a refreshing change from the three previous windows, in which Newcastle made no first-team signings.

Last summer was especially fraught: the club scrambled to raise funds, reluctantly selling players like Jankuba Minteh, and even entertaining moves for Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Now, with greater stability, Eddie Howe has the squad refreshed and ready for another assault on both the Premier League and Champions League.

But this financial strain has already shaped the careers of some local talents.

Elliot Anderson was one of the unfortunate casualties of last year’s PSR storm, and his career trajectory offers an intriguing comparison to the Magpies’ latest homegrown star.

Elliot Anderson: The one that got away

Born in Whitley Bay and a product of the Newcastle academy, Anderson was supposed to be one of the players to lead the club into a new era.

His versatility and box-to-box energy made him a valuable squad member, but his sale to Nottingham Forest in 2024 highlighted the brutal reality of PSR.

The deal, which saw goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos move the other way, was not desired by either player or club, but pure profit from academy graduates was too valuable to ignore.

It echoed Aston Villa’s decision to part with Jacob Ramsey this summer – a player they desperately wanted to keep, but whose sale ensured compliance.

For Anderson, though, the move has proved a blessing as he has gone on to become a first-team regular at Forest.

Last season, he made 37 league appearances, scoring twice and providing six assists.

His all-action style and adaptability earned him his first senior England call-up, having previously represented Scotland at youth level.

In a recent World Cup qualifier against Andorra, he started in midfield and drew widespread praise.

The underlying numbers emphasise Anderson’s growth.

He ranks in the 88th percentile compared to positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues for assists per 90 (0.19), 77th percentile for shot-creating actions (3.07), and 89th percentile for successful take-ons (1.18).

Defensively, he is just as impactful: 3.07 tackles (88th percentile) and 2.40 clearances (87th percentile) per 90 show his ability to press and recover.

Anderson has carved out an impressive Premier League profile at Forest, but Newcastle may already be brewing an even bigger star at home.

The Magpies' rising star

At just 19 years old, Lewis Miley has become the brightest prospect on Tyneside.

A product of Newcastle’s youth system, Miley has already played 49 times for the first team, including appearances in the Champions League.

Miley was linked with loans to Crystal Palace and Ipswich this summer, but Newcastle blocked any exit after early-season injuries to Joelinton, Tonali and Joe Willock.

That decision reflects his growing importance. As Bruno Guimaraes put it, “Miley is massive, he’s a star.”

His profile is that of a modern box-to-box midfielder: technically gifted, press-resistant, and intelligent in possession.

With a precise first touch, excellent passing range, and an ability to dictate tempo, Miley is already showing signs of becoming Newcastle’s long-term midfield conductor.

His market value, as per Transfermarkt, has soared to £20m, and he is beginning to feature for England’s U21s.

The data comparison with Anderson highlights why Miley may have a higher ceiling and has been noted as the “next young English superstar” by pundit Pat Nevin.

His pass completion stands at 88.0%, compared to Anderson’s 78.3%.

He averages more completed passes per 90 (48.0 to 35.8) and slightly more progressive passes (4.86 to 4.72). Defensively, he excels too: four tackles per 90 versus Anderson’s 3.04.

While Anderson leads in progressive carries (1.72 to Miley’s 0.57) and shot-creating actions (2.87 to 1.15), Miley’s calmness and precision make him a more reliable figure in possession.

His game is built less on dribbling bursts and more on orchestrating play, ensuring balance between attack and defence.

With almost 50 senior appearances under his belt before turning 20, Miley is developing in a way Anderson never quite could at Newcastle.

Surrounded by elite midfielders like Guimaraes and Tonali, he has the perfect environment to refine his craft.

If Anderson is proof of what can be achieved after leaving Tyneside, Miley may be the one who makes it all the way at St James’ Park.

For Newcastle, ensuring his development could be just as important as their headline signings in shaping the club’s long-term future.

PIF have already signed Newcastle's new Elliot Anderson and he's "terrific"

Eddie Howe will hope he has his own Elliot Anderson now at Newcastle United in this terrific talent.

Fábio Santos, Giuliano e Yuri Alberto marcaram, o último convertendo a penalidade decisiva..

CINCO LANCES QJE MARCARAM A PARTIDA

> !DUPLA SERTANEJA AFINADA! Renato abriu o placar logo no início do segundo tempo.

E A ETAPA FINAL?

Somente Adson perdeu, parando no goleiro Mateus Pasinato.

Rickelton: 'The pressure internally is big but externally is huge' at the IPL

“I just wanted to get a score and ease the nerves down,” Rickelton says after scoring his first IPL half-century

Matt Roller01-Apr-20250:57

Bangar hails Rickelton’s ‘subcontinental’ approach against spin

When most players arrive in India for their maiden IPL season, they pull on their new franchise’s kit for the first time. But for Ryan Rickelton, the royal blue and gold trim of Mumbai Indians (MI) was reassuringly familiar.Rickelton has spent three seasons playing for their affiliate MI Cape Town in the SA20, where all six teams are run by IPL owners. Surprisingly, he is the only South African to have played matches for the same franchise in both leagues this year, a route that will surely become increasingly familiar as the global game evolves.Aged 28, Rickelton is a relatively late newcomer to the IPL but has made significant strides under the guidance of MI Cape Town’s batting coach, Hashim Amla, and is the leading run-scorer in the SA20’s brief history. While the two teams’ squads are very different, the crossover in support staff has been beneficial for Rickelton since he arrived in India.Related

Ashwani Kumar on his debut: 'Was feeling pressure, didn't have lunch'

“It’s been a nice introduction into the group, the family – and obviously meeting Akash [Ambani, the MI owner] and everyone as well,” Rickelton said. “It’s not just coming in blind, so it has been an easier transition. But the IPL is a different beast on its own, so to mentally work my head around that is a bit of a different one for me… Luckily, I’ve got a few familiar faces around.”After starting IPL 2025 with scores of 13 and 6, Rickelton hit 62 off 41 balls on Monday night in his first innings at the Wankhede. A target of 117 was never likely to prove challenging, but his attacking intent secured an eight-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with 43 balls to spare – enough to put MI’s net run-rate firmly in the black, despite starting the season with two defeats.”Opening the batting for Mumbai Indians with Rohit Sharma, there’s always going to be pressure internally and obviously externally as well,” Rickelton said. “Hardik [Pandya, the captain] was emphasising today, ‘Raise intensity, this is our home ground.’ We needed to be better and obviously we couldn’t be zero [wins] from three [games].”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rickelton believes that the IPL brings with it “a lot more pressure” than the other franchise leagues he has experienced. “The standard is incredibly high, and the conditions are all changing,” he said. “A year ago, [you] turn on the television and teams are getting 260 and you think it’s a free-for-all, but you come out and it’s actually not that easy.”Different grounds have unique characteristics. The pressure factor internally is big, but externally is huge. You’re playing with some of the world’s best players, not just in this team but around the country, so that extra pressure is there and it’s hard. I’m not going to lie: it’s hard. [I’m] just trying to find my way through that, and trying to adjust my game in order to give the team the best chance of being successful.”Rickelton was bowled off his inside edge in his first two IPL innings, and joked: “I was just trying to not chop it on, in all honesty.” But after two streaky boundaries early in his innings, he grew in confidence and hit three leg-side sixes off Sunil Narine – with the second bringing him a 33-ball half-century.Ryan Rickelton hit five sixes – and four fours – in his innings•Associated Press

“I was a bit nervous,” he said. “I just really wanted to get a score and just ease the nerves down. It was a relatively low total [target], so I knew I could afford a bit of time and just give myself those extra couple of balls… I felt like if I could face 18-20 balls, I’d have some kind of impact on the game and luckily I managed just to get through. It wasn’t as fluent as I’d have liked it to be, but I’ll take it.”It was a massive relief, in all honesty. Our first two games were tricky, on some tough wickets. To get out here in Mumbai and have Spencer [Johnson] turn me inside out was quite a tough battle to get through, but once I managed to get through that it was really pleasing to get a score – but relief, more than anything, and to get two points on the board is great for the team.”The extra bounce at the Wankhede compared to most IPL pitches should provide Rickelton with some home comforts this season, but his main challenge will be to have an impact on the road. Next up for him is a trip to the league’s lowest-scoring venue over the last three years, as MI face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) away on Friday night.

Amorim loves him: Man Utd eyeing January move for Puskas Award nominee

Manchester United are now lining up a move for a former Puskas Award nominee, with Ruben Amorim personally keen on the deal.

Amorim lining up targets for the January transfer window

The 2-1 victory over Chelsea at the weekend will certainly have bought Amorim some time, but the Man United boss has stressed the importance of carrying the momentum into the next game against Sunderland on Saturday.

Should United pick up victories against the Black Cats and Brentford in the following game, their Premier League standing will start to look a lot healthier, but after a slow start to the campaign, the manager has already started to identify potential January targets.

After missing out on a central midfielder in the summer, it would make sense to look to improve in the engine room in the upcoming window, and the Red Devils are on red alert over a potential move for Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher.

Not only that, but Man United are also looking to bolster their defensive options, according to a report from Il Napolista, which states they are now lining up a January move for Federico Dimarco, with Amorim personally very interested in a deal.

The United boss has placed Dimarco high on his list of winter targets, given that the left-back would be an ideal fit in his system, while he also ‘really likes’ the defender for his technical and shooting qualities.

The Italian’s shooting ability was perhaps best displayed in Inter Milan’s clash with Frosinone, during which he scored a remarkable goal from distance, earning a nomination for the 2024 Puskas Award in the process.

"Revelation" Dimarco could be ideal for Amorim

Given that the Inter Milan defender has regularly played at both left-back and left-midfield throughout his career to date, he could be an ideal fit in Amorim’s system, which, of course, utilises wing-backs.

The 27-year-old was also lauded by Paolo Cando, courtesy of his impressive performances in the 2022-23 season, with the Italian journalist saying: “Federico Dimarco has been the revelation of the season. He started at Inter as a backup, and quickly became one of the ironclad starting eleven players.”

Having averaged a 7.38 SofaScore rating so far this season, the Italy international is ranked as the third-best performing player in the Inter squad, and at 27-years-old, he could now be entering his prime.

Consequently, Dimarco could be exactly the type of signing needed to take Man United to the next level, and they should undoubtedly pursue a January move.

Islamabad United kept their stranglehold on PSL 2025, swatting aside Karachi Kings and romping to a seven-wicket victory on Sunday night. Bucking the trend of sides struggling to chase, United inserted Kings and kept their batters in a vice-like grip with regular wickets. Shadab Khan led the way with both ball and bat, taking 2 for 17 in his four before steering the chase with a composed 40-ball 47. It meant United made short work of Kings’ 128, winning with three overs to spare.United flew in the face of recent history; the last six matches this tournament have seen the side batting first win with ease. Upon winning the toss, they put Kings in, and Naseem Shah wasted no time cleaning up David Warner with a slower delivery that cut in. He was followed up by Jason Holder, the tournament’s lead wicket-taker, seaming one away to rock James Vince’s off stump.United’s bowling quality prevented Kings from getting off to the kind of powerplay start teams commonly have this season. The first five overs produced just 29 runs, with Shadab and Imad Wasim posing further difficulties after the powerplay. The two spinners combined for three wickets and conceded just 34 in eight overs, with Saad Baig’s 17-ball 20 the only instance of a top-seven batter succeeding in scoring at over a run-a-ball.Abbas Afridi slammed a 9-ball 24•PCB

It was only in the final two overs that Kings truly cut loose. Abbas Afridi smashed Naseem for a pair of sixes and flew to an unbeaten 24 off the nine balls he faced, helping Kings get past 120.It never looked enough for a United side so adroit at working their way through low targets and storming to big wins. Sahibzada Farhan’s dream season continued as a cameo broke the back of the chase early on, his 30 off 18 enough to guarantee the required rate would not pose problems for his side. Azam Khan, opening alongside Farhan, was uncharacteristically subdued, but in a chase that only required him to anchor, he did just that.Hasan Ali’s two-wicket over, which got rid of Farhan and Colin Munro, offered a brief moment of optimism for his side, but just as United did on the opening day chasing a low total, they hunkered down and made sure they weren’t giving wickets away cheaply.Shadab and Azam combined for 65 in 52 balls to take the sting out of Kings’ attack, a masterclass in drawing jeopardy out of a modest T20 chase. With the scores level and Shadab three away from a half-century, Afridi knocked his middle stump back, but the rueful smile he exchanged with Shadab made clear who really had the upper hand. The winning run was knocked off the following delivery to confirm United’s fourth win in as many games.

West Ham have found an "unstoppable" star who's shades of Dimi Payet

While success hasn’t always followed, West Ham United have had some genuine world-beaters represent the club over the years.

For example, the likes of Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst are more than just club legends; they are true icons of the English game.

Then, in the modern day, while he’s not quite matched their achievements, Jarrod Bowen is in with a real chance of being the club’s greatest ever Premier League player.

However, there is another man who might have an equal shout for that title: Dimitri Payet.

The Frenchman was utterly incredible during his time with the club, and in great news, Nuno Espírito Santo has someone in his current squad with shades of the midfielder in his game.

Payet's West Ham career

West Ham signed Payet from Marseille for a fee of around £10.7m, and while the move received little media attention at the time, it would soon be looked at as one of the best deals that summer.

It didn’t take long at all for the mercurial midfielder to make his mark, as on his debut, against Arsenal, he provided an assist for Cheikhou Kouyaté from a well-taken free-kick.

From that point onwards, the Saint-Pierre-born genius would continue to turn up for the Hammers, and by the end of the season, he had racked up a brilliant haul of 12 goals and 15 assists in 38 games, totalling 3223 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, such an incredible debut campaign for the club saw him named the Premier League Player of the Year at the 2016 London Football Awards, shortlisted for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and named West Ham United Player of the Year.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and after telling the club he didn’t want to play for them anymore, he left for £25m in January.

It’s hard to overstate how brilliant Payet was to watch at West Ham, and while there isn’t anyone just like him in the current squad, there is someone with shades of him in their game.

West Ham's star with shades of Payet

Now, there are a number of players in this current West Ham side who could go on to do great things at the club, as Bowen already has.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, when it comes to someone who has shades of Payet in their game, it’s hard to look past Crysencio Summerville and the potential he has.

It’s important to say the word potential, as it would be crazy to suggest that the former Leeds United star has reached the levels the Frenchman did at the club.

However, that is not the point, as this isn’t a comparison to say he will be as good as the 38-year-old; it’s to point out the elements of his game that feel Payet-esque.

One such element is his brilliant ability with the ball at his feet, specifically when it comes to dribbling and beating opponents.

This was on full display in his Man of the Match-winning display against Everton on Monday night, as the Dutchman was able to complete three of five dribbles, which was the most of anyone on the pitch, including Jack Grealish.

More than that, he utilises this ball-carrying ability to create numerous chances for his teammates, whether through winning fouls or outmanoeuvring opponents.

Finally, while his output hasn’t been ideal since his move to East London, there is undoubtedly a star waiting to come out in the “unstoppable” game-changer, as dubbed by Statman Dave.

This was on show in his final campaign with Leeds, when he racked up 21 goals and ten assists in 49 games and won the Championship Player of the Year.

Ultimately, Summerville isn’t as talented as Payet, but with his ability on the ball and dynamism, there are certainly shades of the Frenchman in his game.
