Tanguy Ndombele is one of Tottenham Hotspur’s mooted summer targets with recent reports claiming they have tabled a club-record £60m bid and, on the surface, it looks like a mouthwatering signing.
A full France international with a major pedigree in Ligue 1, the central midfielder has developed into one of the most sought-after players in world football.
Both Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with big-money moves and it appears almost certain that he will depart the French club this summer; Jean-Michel Aulas, the club’s president, has confirmed he is in negotiations with clubs to sell him.
That was said last summer, too, with Spurs and City both reported, per RMC via TalkSport, to have failed with bids to entice him away.
But how good is he, really, and how has he grown as a player since making his first-team breakthrough at Lyon?
In terms of attributes, Ndombele belies the usual “pace and power” stereotype that is so often associated with young, black footballers.
While he is quick, he has a deftness of touch that takes him past defenders and is also a thoughtful distributor of the ball. He moves it well and is always looking to take up positions in which he can affect the game, be it defensively or offensively.
He is, at his base, a hybrid midfielder, one who is equally adept at breaking up play and recycling possession as he is at taking the ball on the run and quickly picking a pass or unleashing a shot.
He is exceptional at picking the ball up on the turn, too, and spinning away from his man, a la Mousa Dembele in his prime.
And yet, in 2015/16, he was playing for Amiens’ reserve team, in France’s fifth division.
It has been a meteoric rise and along that journey, he has been a model of consistency.
Indeed, in 2016/17, he made his breakthrough into the club’s first-team and laid on seven assists in 30 games in Ligue 2. He also scored twice.
These performances came about at a time when the club did not really know how to use him; throughout the campaign he played in central midfield, attacking midfield, on the right of midfield and at right-back.
He was first loaned to Lyon in 2017/18, with the club securing an option to sign him on a permanent basis should they so wish. In 35 Ligue 1 games, he took to top-flight French football like a duck to water and again laid on seven assists, while nailing down a place in the club’s starting XI.
The following season, the deal having been made permanent, he made one less appearance but still registered seven league assists.
This is not a goalscoring midfielder by any means, as he has scored just one Ligue 1 goal for Lyon in his two seasons at the club.
But he is perhaps exactly what Mauricio Pochettino needs in the centre of midfield.
This is a player who is yet to be burned out by the pressure of a lengthy career at a young age; he is 22 and has played just 130 first-team games at club level. Dele Alli, by comparison, is a year older and has played 272 first-team matches.
Ndombele is fresh as a daisy, then, and all the signs point to a career marked by longevity, such is his playing style.
He is not a full-throttle midfielder, instead choosing to make his bursts forward only when he sees a gap, in a manner not too dissimilar to Moussa Sissoko.
There is more poise and elegance to the way Ndombele plays, however, and it is not hard to see why major clubs are fawning over him.
He has emerged as perhaps the best young central midfielder in Europe in recent years.
Spurs should pull out all the stops to get this deal over the line.
According to The Mirror, Mohamed Salah was tempted by a move to Real Madrid or Italian champions Juventus but will now stick with Liverpool and reassess the situation next summer.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Los Blancos and Juventus were reportedly preparing £150m offers for the Liverpool talisman this summer, which tempted the Egyptian.
However, he now looks set to reevaluate the situation next summer as he feels the timing would not be right to leave Anfield just after securing the Champions League title – the Reds’ sixth major European Cup.

Jurgen Klopp was aware of the interest and is said to have held talks with the club’s hierarchy over the threat of Salah’s potential exit, although a similar conversation will not need to be had for at least another 12 months now.
Sadio Mane is also of interest to some top European sides, but both him and Salah are happy to stay for the 2019/20 season and are reportedly keen to end the club’s 30-year wait for a league title.
It could be Liverpool’s last chance
Make no mistake about it – Salah is Liverpool’s clutch player when it comes to Premier League football.
The former Basel man hit a record-breaking 32 goals in his first league campaign as a Liverpool player, setting a new record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season.
Salah has also won the Reds numerous points on his own, and it goes without saying that a title push last term and a top four finish the year before wouldn’t have been possible without the little Egyptian.
So, with the 27-year-old set to stay for at least another year, next term may be Liverpool’s best chance to win the league for some time if Salah does eventually leave next summer.
It will become substantially harder to win the league if they lose the diminutive forward, a player who is hitting numbers close to Lionel Messi’s – he is irreplaceable and a title challenge will be immeasurably harder without him.
2019/20 could be the last serious shot at the title for Liverpool for some time if Salah does decide to depart next summer.
Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney has been the subject of a £15m bid from Arsenal in recent days, according to The Scottish Sun.
The paper reckon that the Hoops have rejected the offer, but that the Gunners could return in the coming days with an improved deal that may include players of their own.
Leigh Griffiths is ready and raring to go for Celtic next season. One fan discusses what we can expect from him in the video below…
The offer appears to be well short of what is required to bring the Scottish international to the English Premier League, with the report stating that Celtic value him at £25m as a minimum.
Tierney has been a mainstay in the Hoops team for a number of years, and having emerged through the academy as a boyhood supporter of the club is a real fans’ favourite too.
His attacking and combative style is a real benefit to the Hoops on the left flank and if he does move on he won’t be replaced easily.
Celtic fans understandably hate the idea of him leaving and feel that Arsenal’s reported offer is simply far too low to entertain, with many taking to Twitter over the weekend to share their thoughts…

Arsenal are looking to reinforce their left-back options and are pursuing a deal for highly rated Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, according to the BBC.
David Ornstein, who’s been a voice of authority on the subject of Arsenal for many years, reported that the Gunners were confident of securing a deal despite an opening bid being rejected by the Scottish treble winners, who are demanding upwards of £20m.
And now Football Scotland have claimed that Celtic have rejected a fresh bid worth £17.5m.
The left-back position has caused selection headache for Unai Emery all season, with Sead Kolasinac proving a powerhouse going forward, though struggling defensively, and Nacho Monreal showing more defensive resilience and awareness but lacking the drive and quality in attack.
Kieran Tierney is considered an option who fits the best of both worlds, but what have those in the know had to say about the young Scotland international?
Brendan Rogers – Leicester manager
Leicester City manager Rogers worked with Tierney during his time at Celtic and has helped develop the youngster into the star he is today, adding significant value to the player in the process.
Speaking after a 2-0 win over Aberdeen, Rogers praised Tierney’s physical attributes as he scored the second goal of the game after a brilliant sprint up the pitch to finish a Celtic counter-attack.
“He has this great capacity to keep going and like you see in the 84th minute of the Aberdeen game, he’s able to get there before anyone else and make a good finish,” said Brendan Rodgers. “He’s an absolutely brilliant young player who has so much more to come.
“Sometimes people will have certain perceptions about players and I don’t think anyone would have thought he would be the fastest player in this squad. His power and speed off a standing start is fantastic. My teams tend to have dynamic players with speed in them and he’s a player who can carry out that role.
“He’s unique, Kieran, because he’s very robust and very strong for a young player. He’s worked very hard on his body and his intensity is incredible, he trains to the max every day and he’s got stronger and more powerful since I’ve been here. We had some measurements on that in Dubai and he was the quickest player in our squad.”
Arsenal fans will be very encouraged by the comments, especially as Emery’s first 12 months in charge at the club have shown the value he places on the energy and physicality of his full-backs.
The Gunners have been criticised in the past for lacking a physical presence that others possess, and Tierney would certainly add some steel to the back line.
James Forrest – Celtic teammate

Speaking to the Daily Record, Forrest said:
“I’ve faced Alba, Vertonghen and Kolarov. There are a lot of top ones when you go into the Champions League or Europa League or are playing with Scotland.
“But Kieran’s right up there. You can see the way he bombs up and down how fit he is and he’s good defensively as well. He’s a great athlete.
“He’s been training with the first team for a good four years now so I’ve played against him a lot in training.
“Whether you are playing against him or he’s in your team, you can see the quality he’s got.
“When you go away with the Scotland team others players who play against him realise how good he is.
“You’ve seen that with his performances in Europe and at international level.
“He can also play a couple of different positions. When you play in Europe all the left-backs tend to be good.
“There’s nothing between him and Andy. They are two great players for Scotland.”
Once again his physical attributes are top of the list for appraisal, but Forrest suggests the Gunners may be getting a more versatile player than they think.
The youngster can play on the left-wing as well, another position that’s caused problems for the Gunners, and is even competent at centre-back. He’s ticking a lot of boxes for Emery, even if he’s predominantly a left-back by trade, versatility is a useful quality in any player.
To be compared to the Champions League-calibre names above is very high praise indeed, and will surely get Arsenal fans excited over the possibility of a move to north London.
Celtic fans aren’t happy about Arsenal’s bid for one of their key players…

Speaking to the BBC, former Scotland international and soon-to-be free agent Charlie Adam said:
“I think it’s probably now time for him to leave Celtic.
“It’s the next progression for his career. Seeing how well Andrew Robertson’s progressed at Liverpool, as a player you’ve got to be thinking, ‘I want some of that.
“He’s done amazing at Celtic, winning the treble treble. It’s going to be difficult for him to leave because he is a big Celtic fan but if Arsenal do want him, they’ll have to pay serious money for him.”
The comparisons with Andy Robertson have been thrown around ever since the links between Tierney and Arsenal, and it’s easy to understand why.
There is certainly the sense that if Tierney is to develop into an elite player, a move to one of the major European Leagues is inevitable, in the same way it was for Moussa Dembele, or more notably Virgil van Dijk.
There’s been little-to-no bad press or reaction to Arsenal’s move for Tierney. The only criticism that could be thrown at the deal would surround the Gunners’ budget: if it really is just the reported £40m, is £20m+ on a left-back necessary? Kolasinac may be inconsistent but he’s not a priority to replace.
Whether finding a suitable left-back should be a priority or not, Arsenal would certainly be bringing in a top player if Tierney were to sign.
