He currently has Jannik Vestergaard, Maya Yoshida, Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt to pick from, but it was the former trio who were cut open far too easily on more than one occasion against Feyenoord at the weekend.

It is clear that a quicker centre-back is required, but the backline isn’t the only issue.

Without the injured Oriol Romeu at the De Kuip stadium, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and James Ward-Prowse were the shield for the three central defenders, but neither had the positional discipline to sit in as the Dutch giants frequently attacked through the middle in the opening 45 minutes.

Their goal actually came from a ball into the inside channel that wasn’t well defended, before Feyenoord were given far too much space and time in the penalty box to finish past Angus Gunn.

A more mobile defensive midfielder appears to be needed whether Romeu is fit or not – even if there might be a hope that Harrison Reed can step up – to ensure that a still visibly shaky backline have the protection they need.

The latest report in The Daily Echo suggests that Southampton won’t – and can’t – sign anyone else before players go out the door, and says that Hasenhuttl has already accepted and is planning for the scenario that he may have to begin the season with what he has now.

Hardly ideal then, with plenty of work still to be done defensively on the latest evidence.

Rangers scored from two corners in their dramatic 2-1 over Kilmarnock at the weekend, and this route to goal will be pivotal for the Gers throughout the campaign.

On the chalkboard

Goals from Connor Goldson and Scott Arfield gave Steven Gerrard’s men all three points as they visited the tricky Rugby Park over the weekend. Both were a result of James Tavernier corners, with Arfield reacting quickest to Nikola Katic’s saved header and Goldson bulleting in direct from the defender’s dead-ball.

Not only did it give Gerrard a vital win on the opening day of the season, but it brought his first ever win over Killie in the Premiership, a milestone that’s far from meaningless given the trouble they caused him last term.

And winning the game thanks to two great set-piece deliveries, met by two towering headers from centre-backs, could be an important and often repeated method this season.

An aerial threat

In Katic and Goldson, Rangers clearly have two central defenders capable of winning the first ball from set-piece situations. Their prowess in the air, coupled with 6 foot 3 new signing Filip Helander’s obvious advantage at set-pieces, means the club have great targets for free-kicks and corners.

More importantly, they have the perfect player to find those targets in Tavernier. The right-back amassed a stunning 20 assists in 57 outings last year and the majority came as a result of his wand-like right-foot.

His delivery, as witnessed on Sunday, is pinpoint and with giants Katic, Goldson and Helander to aim at you’d expect Killie won’t be the last side to concede a few headed goals to the Gers this season.

And it’s a good thing that the Gers are so well-equipped to cause problems from set-pieces, because they do tend to struggle to create clear-cut chances in cagey affairs against park-the-bus teams. With Gerrard sticking to his 4-3-3, there’s no obvious space for a creator in the side.

Arfield works hard from the left, Sheyi Ojo is a direct winger and Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe are far more adept at scoring from the final pass, not making it.

Gerrard’s midfield three are typically hard-workers and tidy in possession but none are players that you’d expect to get near Tavernier’s 20 assist mark from last season.

This lack of goals and creativity from midfield is certainly an issue, but if Tavernier and the towering boys in the middle keep linking up at set-pieces, it shouldn’t stop the Gers from really challenging their age-old foes this season.

وأضاف: “أتيحت لنا بعض الفرص اليوم، ولكن لم نترجمها إلى فرص، كما أن إصابة المدافع نمر في بداية اللقاء أربكت حساباتنا بلا شك، وأثرت على خط الدفاع، ولم أدخل المباراة بهدف الخسارة بأقل عدد من الأهداف بالتأكيد، ولكني كنت أمني نفسي بالتعادل”.

واستطرد: “في ظل ظروف الأهلي الحالية لم أكن أتوقع خسارة الأهلي بثلاثية نظيفة، وحزين للخسارة بتلك النتيجة الكبيرة، وأي فريق من فرق المجموعة من الصعب عليه أن يخرج بثلاث نقاط من ملعب الأهلي”.

The transfer window may be closed for clubs in England but that doesn’t mean players can’t depart their respective teams.

For those in Europe, the market is still open and that means that Leeds aren’t done in terms of their activity yet.

Pawel Cibicki became the latest name to depart, albeit on loan as he headed for a temporary stay with ADO Den Haag in the Netherlands.

If the Dutch side chooses to do so, they can sign him permanently next summer.

It was a move that sparked various reaction from Leeds supporters as some took a comical look at it. One individual sarcastically said that not holding onto the forward meant they’d stay down whilst another said promotion was off the cards.

However, others provided more analytical responses. A further supporter thought he’d be good in a Marcelo Bielsa side as another claimed he had potential.

Cibicki played just ten times for the Whites, failing to score a single goal during his time at the club. The 25-year-old did manage to register two assists, though.

Daniel Levy’s relationship with the agent of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen has broken down, per The Guardian.

What’s the word?

Eriksen aired his desire to move to a new club following the Champions League final and the report states that he has set his heart on a move to one of the Spanish super clubs, either Barcelona or Real Madrid.

Their transfer deadline, unlike the one in England, which closed before the resumption of competition, does not come to pass until next Monday.

That means that either club could still bid for the Denmark international, though they have yet to do so, per Football FanCast sources.

Eriksen has entered the final year of his contract but the club are unaware of his future plans, given that Levy has not spoken to Martin Schoots, who represents the player, for a significant period of time.

There is, of course, the possibility that he could look to leave on a free transfer next summer.

Patch things up

Levy has no excuse not to attempt to patch things up with Schoots and, by extension, with Eriksen.

Spurs need to know if one of their best players will be sticking around, or if he will be seeking a move in the coming months.

If it is the latter, a contingency plan can be drawn up; if it is the former, they can rest easy until next summer’s transfer window.

That the relationship has broken down is not at all a good sign, however.

Liverpool have been at the centre of a controversial situation this week after Bobby Duncan’s issues with the club became clear.

Duncan’s agent released a statement on his behalf, airing complaints about Michael Edwards and stating that the youngster’s mental health is being affected by the treatment.

Club legend Jamie Carragher quickly jumped to the defence of the Reds on Twitter, and what followed was a war of words between the Sky Sports pundit and the player’s representative.

These are certainly some strong accusations being thrown out by Saif Rubie. He calls Michael Edwards a glorified data analyst, and he states that when the truth comes out perceptions will change.

Unfortunately for Duncan, it’s hard to disagree with Carragher’s advice of leaving his agent. It’s really unprofessional behaviour to be spreading defamatory statements online and getting involved in a childish argument with a club legend.

Of course, the spitting incident was unacceptable, but how is it relevant to this situation? Emotions are running high, and Rubie isn’t conducting himself well at all here.

Carragher is spot on when he says that Rubie’s actions are only harming Duncan’s career. Yes, this type of public tirade may grant him his Anfield exit, but it’s tough to see any club wanting to deal with his agent after this debacle.
