15 players linked to Liverpool, but who ticks all Kenny’s boxes?

It has been a year since we started this website (Live4Liverpool.com) and over that time Liverpool have been linked with an assortment of wingers. It is no doubt a position we need to strengthen and I have listed 15 below who have been linked with Liverpool since the site launched. If I have missed any out please feel free to remind me in the comments section below:

Alexis Sanchez (Attacking Midfielder/Wide Forward, Udinese) – The Chilean playmaker has been the subject of a £30m+ bid by an unnamed team, and with Man United, Liverpool and others circulated to be interested, it looks as if he could be moving from Udinese in the summer.

Ashley Young (Winger, Aston Villa) – His preferred destination is said to be Man United, but he has yet to sign a new deal with Villa and maybe available quite cheaply in the summer with only a year left on his contract.

Eden Hazard (Attacking Midfielder/Wide Forward, Lille) – Has recently signed a new deal with Lille, but this was most likely to up the value of the player in the transfer market. Big names such as Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with the Belgian starlet.

Gervinho (Wide Forward, Striker, Lille) – The Ivorian has been linked with both Newcastle and Liverpool in recent weeks, and with Damien Comolli watching Lille in recently, speculation has grown that Gervinho could be his target.

Juan Mata (Attacking Midfielder/Winger, Valencia) – Last linked with Liverpool back in October, the Valencia midfielder is a very talented player and it will surely be only a matter of time before another club comes in for him.

[ad_pod id=’fox-mpu’ align=’right’]

Arda Turan (Winger, Galatasaray) – Has stated his desire to play for Liverpool in the past but the Turkish international has not been linked with the Reds since last summer, although many Reds fans would like to see him at Anfield.

Charles N’Zogbia (Winger, Wigan) – Constantly linked with a move away from the DW Stadium, the Frenchman has been on good form this season, and he has stated he will discuss his future at the end of the season.

Balasz Dzsudzsak (Winger, PSV) – The 24 year old Hungarian has been on excellent form in the Dutch Eredivisie this campaign with 15 goals. He has been told by his coach Fred Rutten to stay at PSV as he is not ready for a big league. At 24 though, if he isn’t ready now, he will never be.

Sylvain Marveaux (Attacking Midfielder/Wide Forward, Rennes) – Falsely quoted as being on the brink of a move to Liverpool, there is still a possibility though that the Frenchman may move to the Reds on a Bosman free transfer.

Dimitri Payet (Winger, St Etienne) – Possibly linked with the Reds because of Comolli’s previous affiliation with St Etienne, the player has also been linked with Chelsea in recent months.

Marko Marin (Winger, Werder Bremen) – An exciting young, skilful German international winger, and with Bremen struggling in the Bundesliga, he will most likely be looking for a move to a bigger club.

Aiden McGeady (Winger, Spartak Moscow) – The Reds have been linked with the former Celtic player in recent days.

Kwadwo Asamoah (Winger/Attacking Midfielder, Udinese) – A young exciting prospect for the future, the Ghanian has played well for Udinese this season as they currently lie 4th in Serie A

Andre Ayew (Wide Forward, Marseille) – Another young Ghanian, Ayew has been making a name for himself in Ligue One this season with Marseille.

Diego Perotti (Winger, Sevilla) – Linked with Liverpool today, the 22 year old Argentine has been in and out of the Sevilla team over the last few seasons. Arsenal have been linked with the player in the past.

MLS wrap: Fortunes differ for new clubs on debut

The Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers made contrasting starts to life in the MLS as the league swung into full gear on Saturday. The Los Angeles Galaxy’s 1-0 win over Seattle opened the campaign on Wednesday, but all eyes were on Saturday’s packed schedule as Vancouver and Portland made their MLS debuts.A crowd of 22,592 crammed into Vancouver’s Empire Field to see the Whitecaps face Toronto FC in the competition’s first-ever all-Canadian encounter, and the home fans did not leave disappointed when their side ran out 4-2 winners.French striker Eric Hassli scored the Whitecaps’ first MLS goal, getting on the end of a cross from Swiss midfielder Davide Chiumiento to stroke past Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 15th minute. The lead lasted just five minutes before veteran Canada midfielder Dwayne De Rosario capped a Toronto counter-attack with a composed finish, but Vancouver took a 2-1 advantage into the half-time break when midfielder Terry Dunfield struck in the 26th minute.Atiba Harris made it 3-2 in the 63rd minute before designated player Hassli scored his brace to all-but wrap the game up, with Brazilian striker Maicon Santos scoring a consolation goal for Toronto, who are coached by former Ajax star Aron Winter. It was no fairytale start for the Portland Timbers, however, who faced the heady prospect of travelling to reigning title-holders Colorado Rapids in their debut.First-half strikes from midfielder Jeff Larentowicz, Jamaica forward Omar Cummings and former Celtic schemer Jamie Smith had Colorado well in control for much of the game, with target man Kenny Cooper claiming a late strike for the Timbers to ensure they did not go home completely empty handed.Real Salt Lake showed why they conceded just 20 goals last season – breaking an MLS record in the process – in their 1-0 edging of San Jose.San Jose had eight shots on target compared to the visitors’ two, but could not find a way past Nick Rimando in the Real goal.Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman got the only goal of the game with his right-foot drive from outside the area on 64 minutes, with his side able to survive some unsure handling by Rimando as the rain tumbled down in the second half to claim all three points. It was hard not to miss the irony in Omar Bravo’s two-goal debut in Sporting Kansas City’s 3-2 win over Chivas USA at the Home Depot Centre in California. After fellow debutant CJ Sapong scored for Sporting in the first minute, Mexican international striker Bravo struck either side of half-time and was a nuisance to the Chivas defence for much of the match.Midfielder Ben Zemanski added to veteran defender Jimmy Conrad’s goal in the 81st minute to ensure a nervy finish to the encounter. But the real story was Bravo’s double on debut against the sister club of Chivas Guadalaraja – the Mexican side where he made his name, scoring over 100 goals. In his first competitive match in more than a year, Charlie Davies’ second-half brace spurred DC United to a 3-1 win over Columbus Crew at home. Davies had been a passenger in a fatal car accident in October 2009 while on international duty with the US, and has joined United on-loan from French Ligue 1 club Sochaux as he bids to return to full fitness.Thierry Henry’s missed penalty mattered little as 18-year-old striker Juan Agudelo celebrated his call-up to the US team with the New York Red Bulls’ winner in their 1-0 triumph over Seattle, while the Philadelphia Union claimed the same result at Houston Dynamo.Dallas and Chicago shared the points in a 1-1 stalemate at the former’s Pizza Hut Park, with Brek Shea dismissed for the home side in the 55th minute for bringing down Uruguayan striker Gaston Puerari as the last man.

Milan wary of Fiorentina threat

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani believes Fiorentina should not be underestimated ahead of their Serie A clash at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.Galliani acknowledges that his league-leading side are favorites to win the Scudetto after picking up maximum points again their closest rivals Inter and Napoli.

Milan have led Serie A for 21 weeks of the season, but dropped points against Bari and Palermo and could yet slip up away to ninth-placed Fiorentina on Sunday.

“We will face it (the match) with the usual commitment,” Galliani said.

“All matches are difficult, as I told the coach and some players today. Consider this – our last games were against Napoli, Juventus, Bari, Palermo and Inter Milan. We gained nine points against Napoli, Juventus and Inter Milan, while just one against Bari and Palermo.”

“So I never know, the matches are all the same to me, they all count for three points. I don’t know which are the easy ones and which are the difficult ones.”

Milan go into the game safe in the knowledge that even if they lose and Napoli win, Walter Mazzari’s challengers will stay second courtesy of their inferior head-to-head record.

“I know we have been leading the championship for 21 weeks now and I know that we will be leading next week too ? because head-to-head matches are in our favour, so if we and Napoli would have the same points we will be ahead of them,” Galliani said.

“The team gained 12 points against the two main challengers ? Inter Milan and Napoli, so winning this championship is our duty.”

Galliani also moved to play down speculation linking troubled Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli with a return to Italy.

“I repeat, let’s leave Balotelli alone now, Manchester City has just bought him last summer ? so it’s better to talk about our players,” Galliani said.

“Anyway, Balotelli is a friend, he is an AC Milan supporter, but a Manchester City player.”

Daniel Levy’s Big Decision This Summer

Ordinarily, a team of Champions’ League quality who is eliminated from the competition at the quarter-final stage following a 5-0 aggregate defeat, the final nail in the coffin being a 1-0 home defeat, isn’t warmly received by an encompassing applause as appreciation for their efforts. But Tottenham’s players had warranted the acclaim for providing their fans, and the rest of Europe, with one of the most entertaining campaigns of any team in continental competition this season.

Nobody attended White Hart Lane two weeks ago expecting a miraculous comeback from the 4-0 deficit created at the Bernabeu a week earlier, especially considering Jose Mourinho was occupying the opposing dug-out, but Spurs displayed flashes of brilliance, which is what has characterised their first ever Champions’ League journey from qualification against Young Boys up until victory at the San Siro against seven-time winners, AC Milan.

But what now for the Lilywhites? Spurs have drawn their two League games since Madrid eliminated them and now find themselves four points behind Manchester City in the race for re-qualification with five games remaining and the sides set to meet in a potentially season-defining match at Eastlands on May 10th. The financial repercussions the club will face for settling in the Europa League next season are far-reaching considering their most important assets have now announced themselves on a universal stage. On the surface, Tottenham’s stars appear committed to Harry Redknapp’s vision, even if it now includes a year without Champions’ League football, but it is not inconceivable to imagine Gareth Bale or Luka Modric leaving for big money this summer.

[ad_pod id=’unruly’ align=’right’]

Europe’s richest are likely to exploit Tottenham’s failings by offering significant fees which chairman, Daniel Levy, would be forced to consider to cushion the loss of Champions’ League revenue. More importantly, Redknapp’s squad is in need of improvement from its current condition, with the addition of at least one striker, perhaps midfield reinforcements and maybe another defender of the highest priority. If they fail to finish in the top 4 this term, Redknapp will find it difficult to court the sort of quality he was able to chase last January, when a bid of around £38million was made for 22 year-old Sergio Aguero.

Redknapp has been defiant in his belief that Spurs can still achieve their target, recently claiming: “I think we have always had the desire to get back in next season but it is not going to be easy. Manchester City finished a couple of points behind us last season and then went out and spent £150m to try to finish above us this year. It’s difficult.” Spurs’ rise under Redknapp has been meteoric, and a sudden halt to the dramatic progress the club has made over the last two years could set them back a further couple of seasons. The difference between Tottenham and their closest rival is that Manchester City can of course still afford to attract any talent they desire even if they remain outside the top 4 this year. It will be an intense and interesting race which will probably culminate at the Premier League’s natural conclusion in match-week 38, but the May 10th showpiece could provide us with an early indication as to whether City can join Europe’s elite, or whether Spurs can maintain their status amongst them.

Maggio: We can still win the title

Napoli winger Christian Maggio is confident the Serie A title is still within the second-placed side’s grasp.Napoli host fifth-placed Udinese, who are fighting for a place in the Champions League, on Sunday.

Napoli are three points behind league leaders AC Milan, and Maggio believes there are signs that tip the title race in their favour.

“Sometimes I think about our ability to win the title – we’ve had some small signals, like winning against Lazio without giving up until the end, like Ibrahimovic being sent off,” he said.

He admitted the Azzurri, who have won their last four home games, will collect the title, should they claim maximum points in all of their remaining fixtures which contains clashes with Palermo, Inter and Juventus.

“As I said, we have to win every game, and hope that teams above us lose ground.”

“We’ve had small signs that make you think it could be our year.”

One of those signs could be that Udinese star Antonio Di Natale has been ruled out of the clash at the San Paolo with a foot injury.

The 33-year-old striker, who has scored 26 goals this season, suffered an ankle injury before last weekend’s match against Roma and lew to see a specialist in Barcelona on Friday for an expert opinion.

Mercurial Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez is also out for the Udine outfit.

But Maggio said the next few games will be imperative in determining their fate in their attempt to revive the glory days of Maradona two decades ago.

“As for me, I think it’s still too early, we have to wait at least 2-3 games to see if we can do it.”

West Brom eyeing summer deals

West Bromwich Albion could target Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak and Ipswich’s Gareth McAuley this off-season.West Brom manager Roy Hodgson has guided the side to a mid-table finish since taking the reins in February and will be looking for further success next term.

And ahead of their home game against Everton on Saturday, Hodgson refused to rule out a move for the pair.

Hodgson said: “They are players that fall into the West Bromwich Albion category.”

“If those players are available they will certainly be players we will discuss.”

“At the moment all that type of talk is pure speculation and I think there is going to be an awful lot of speculation in the next couple of weeks.”

“This is the time when the agents are trying to move their players around and make them attractive to other clubs by supposedly having clubs who are interested in buying them.”

“One of the classic things is saying ‘he’s wanted by these 35 clubs but he wants to come to you because he’s always wanted to play in a blue and white shirt!’ I have heard it before.”

Indeed Hodgson knows all the tricks of the trade after a long managerial career that started way back in 1976.

It has been a season of two halves with his time at Liverpool cut short in January before his more successful period at West Brom.

Kenny Dalglish succeeded him in the Anfield hotseat and the club has taken a massive upturn in fortunes since then. Hodgson admitted it was a good appointment for the club to make.

“It is obvious that since Kenny has had some very good results since he took over from me,’ Hodgson said.

“The club and fans seem happy with him, but it is not for me to be commenting about it because I do not want to be accused of being hypocritical.”

“I do not think it is my business to say whether an appointment is good or bad but the public perception is that it was a good appointment.”

West Brom will be without defender Pablo Ibanez (hamstring) and midfielders Steven Reid (calf) and Graeme Dorrans (ankle) for the match against Everton.

Neuer: I’m no Judas

Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer believes he has done nothing wrong in revealing he will not be renewing his contract with the club.Neuer has made it clear he will not extend his contract with Schalke when it expires in June 2012, fuelling speculation of a move to with fellow Bundesliga club Bayern Munich or English giants Manchester United.

But the 25-year-old disagreed with Schalke fans who believe he has let the club down.

“I have betrayed no-one. All I have done is tell Schalke that I will not be renewing my contract in 2012. I have not lied or broken a promise,” he said.

“I would never do that because I love Schalke. I have always given everything for this club. This club is a piece of home for me and will remain so for sure.”

“I know there are some that have now chosen to label me as a Judas, others accept my decision and respect it at least.”

Neuer was born in Gelsekirchen and has played all hisfootball with Schalke after coming up through the club’s academy.

He is now hoping to go out with a German Cup winners’ medal as Schalke clash with 2.Bundesliga outfit Duisburg in the final on Saturday.

“We are of course favourites and we want to be celebrating at the end of the game,” he said.

“It would be my first title as a professional with Schalke and something I would never forget for the rest of my life. Our goal is that we win the cup for us and the fans.”

Schalke narrowly avoided relegation with a 14th-placed finish in the league, but progressed to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals before losing to Manchester United.

A Liverpool player that deserves his plaudits

Picture the scene. Liverpool, mounting a realistic Premier League title challenge for the first time in six years, are playing host to Fulham at Anfield, knowing that a win could take them two points clear of league leaders Chelsea. The Reds face the Cottagers well aware of the visitors’ travel-sickness, with Roy Hodgson’s side having picked up just two points in six away games.

Unfortunately the early morning optimism dissipates, and the afternoon proves to be a frustrating one for the Anfield faithful. Despite Fernando Torres’ return to the starting line-up, a resolute Fulham hold Liverpool to a draw and cost the Reds two crucial points.

Lucas Leiva, curiously selected to deputise for the absent Steven Gerrard, is booed by a small section of the Anfield crowd and made a scapegoat for the side’s impotency. The 21-year-old, who has endured a tough time in L4 since arriving in the summer of 2007, has struggled to make an impact and frequently finds himself behind fan favourites Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano in the midfield pecking order.

Fast forward to the penultimate week of May 2011 and neither Alonso nor Mascherano sports the Liver bird on their chest any more. Both components of this once-feared midfield-axis have moved on to pastures new; Alonso to Real Madrid, and Mascherano to Barcelona. Meanwhile, Lucas, once a perennially mocked and derided figure, has been named the Standard Chartered Fans player of the year after tallying 40 per cent of the 129,774 votes cast.

Speaking about the award to the club’s official website, he said: “I wouldn’t have expected this (in my first season). The way I started my career at Liverpool wasn’t the easiest, but as I have said before, I wouldn’t change anything.

“The difficult times just made me stronger and stronger and I tried to improve all the time. That’s what I am doing now.”

The issuing of the award caps a fairytale-esque turnaround for Liverpool’s number 21. No longer a byword for mediocrity, the reliable Brazilian has worked hard to establish himself as a key player in Liverpool’s starting XI.

The former Gremio man, effectively tasked with replacing Mascherano and Alonso, has incorporated elements of both of his former team-mates’ games into his own.

Hesitation and caution have been replaced by calmness and incision. Lucas is seldom dispossessed and his passes are no longer solely to the back and to the side. Witness for example, his exquisite through ball to Luis Suarez in the first minute of Liverpool’s recent 5-2 triumph away at Fulham.

Although not as explosive as Mascherano, Lucas has excelled at breaking up opposition play in the middle of the park. He thrived in key home wins against Manchester United and Chelsea, successfully thwarting more distinguished central midfielders. The Brazilian finished 2010/11 with more tackles (172) than any player, whilst attaining a respectable tackle success rate of 65%.

His ascension from frustrating fringe player to first-team regular owes a great deal to the faith of former manager Rafael Benitez.

Speaking in December 2008, Benitez said: “”People just don’t know how good Lucas is. He is a fantastic player, he was captain of his club side at 19 and has already won full caps with Brazil.”

Shorn of Alonso and the Spaniard’s replacement Alberto Aquilani, Benitez placed greater responsibility upon the 24-year-old in 2009/10, and his faith was rewarded with much more assured displays. Lucas featured 35 times for the club in the Premier League that season, and his progress led to him being voted the club’s Young Player of the Season.

After Benitez’s departure, many envisaged an Anfield exit for the Brazilian, but he stayed at Liverpool and continued his good form into the new season. He maintained his first-team berth under Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, and his consistency culminated in a new long-term contract.

Moving to play football in a different continent at a young age is a difficult transition to make at the best of times, but this is made even harder when one’s displays are constantly criticised. Instead of moaning or pining for a move away, the boy from Dourados knuckled down and worked hard to become a player worthy of the red shirt.

In this era of quick-fix fickleness, it’s nice to see how far a little hard work, faith and support can go.

Could a Leeds old boys reunion boost their Premier League hopes?

Not since the 2003-04 season have the injury blighted duo of Jonathan Woodgate and Alan Smith lined up alongside each other in the white of Leeds United. It was that fateful season that one of the biggest clubs in English football succumbed to the relegation trapdoor, to which they have yet to return. Next season they will again try to regain their place in the top echelon of English football, a challenge that could be aided by old boys Woodgate and Smith. Both men are now without a club after they were released by Tottenham and Newcastle respectively, meaning it’s an avenue Leeds should certainly consider exploring. However, it’s one that brings as many potential negatives as positives.

When a club brings back a former player it can work one of two ways, it can generate a buzz of anticipation and excitement amongst the fans, or it can have the complete opposite effect. Woodgate and Smith were both held in very high esteem by Leeds fans while they played for the Elland Road outfit, but they both left the club at a time when it was in free fall. Their departures were inevitable, as both were highly regarded young England internationals who had to be sold to help Leeds financial situation . However, Smith’s departure left fans enraged, as he crossed the Pennines for arch rivals Manchester United no sooner had the dust settled on Leeds relegation. So would the fans welcome him back with open arms?

The main consideration that should come to the forefront with any potential signing of Woodgate and Smith should be their fitness levels. Do Leeds want to bring two players to the club who could feasibly spend most of the season in the treatment room? Jonathan Woodgate in particular has spent large parts of his career battling numerous injuries which have ruined what had the potential to be a hugely successful career. Woodgate only made one appearance for Spurs last season, in the game with Milan at the San Siro. Smith didn’t fair much better either, he only made eleven appearances for the Magpies.

Then we come to the next dilemma in signing the two former stars, their wages. Both may have suffered with injuries throughout their careers, but they haven’t suffered financially, they have both been involved in big money moves which have seen their bank balances well looked after. They would both be well aware they would need to take a pay cut to sign for Leeds, but they would still command considerably higher wages than their team mates. The prospect of paying top wages to players who could find themselves spending more time in the treatment room than on the pitch should be a major consideration for Leeds to take on board.

However, if they managed to stay fit for the majority of the season Leeds would be enhancing their aspirations for a promotion push with two quality players, who would bring a wealth of experience to the side. Having two Premiership calibre players in their ranks would not only significantly increase Leeds promotions credentials, but it would send out a statement of intent. Woodgate and Smith experienced what were possibly some of the greatest moments of their careers playing for Leeds, notably the memorable Champions League campaign in the 2000-01 season. Such times are a long gone now, but the two men could be the catalysts in the next memorable chapter in Leeds United’s history – the season Leeds get back to the Premier League.

It would certainly be a risk for Leeds to bring Smith and Woodgate back to the club, but is it a risk worth taking?  What would the fans reaction to Smith be like? Would his move to Man United be water under the bridge, or do some fans still harbour resentment towards him? Do Woodgate’s persistent injury problems make any move for him foolish, or could he reignite his career and Leeds hopes of promotion with a move back to Elland Road? These are all questions Leeds fans need to ask themselves.

Fabricio Coloccini gets the nod at Newcastle

Argentinean defender Fabricio Coloccini has been named as Newcastle captain following the departure of previous incumbent Kevin Nolan to West Ham. The former Deportivo man beat competition from Steven Taylor, Stuart Harper and Joey Barton, and will lead his side out against Arsenal on the first day of the season at St James’ Park on August 13th.

“I am thrilled to be named captain of Newcastle United. It is one of the proudest moments of my career. Leading the team out in front of our supporters in our first game against Arsenal will be a great honour for me and I aim to give my best for the team and the supporters throughout the season,” he reportedly stated in The Daily Mail.

“I would also like to thank Alan Pardew for putting his faith in me. It means so much to me.”

The former Charlton and West Ham manager believes he has selected the right man for the job.

“I had no hesitation in choosing Fabricio to be my captain next season. He will lead the team in a different manner to Kevin, but his professionalism, attitude, application and fantastic character made him the stand-out candidate and, in my mind, the 100% right decision,” the 49-year-old stated.

Meanwhile, Barton congratulated the South American on his Twitter account, and showed no ill-feeling that he was overlooked.

“I’m happy for Colo and it’s probably the correct decision given my precarious contract situation, gives stability. I’ll be a leader without an armband and I’ll be there for Colo as well as all the lads regardless. Selfishly, it lets me concentrate on playing well every week,” the 28-year-old observed.
