WHU eye Weghorst

According to Calciomercato, West Ham United are interested in signing Wout Weghorst from Wolfsburg this summer.

The Lowdown: West Ham need a striker

David Moyes has led the Irons through a wonderful campaign – they ended up finishing in sixth place in the Premier League, which secured them a spot in next term’s Europa League.

If they want to be competitive both in Europe and domestically next year, though, they will need to bring in a new striker – they only have Michail Antonio available as a natural number nine option at the moment.

The Latest: Hammers eye Weghorst

Now, it is being reported the Irons are interested in Wolfsburg forward Weghorst.

Serie A outfit AS Roma are also believed to be in pursuit, via the Italian outlet.

The Verdict: Good option

Weghorst has been in magnificent form with German outfit Wolfsburg, who secured Champions League football via the Bundesliga this campaign. He netted 25 goals in all competitions for the club, taking his career tally at the Volkswagen Arena to 63 strikes in 120 (Transfermarkt). Add in the 45 in 86 he managed at previous employers AZ Alkmaar, and he has 108 goals in his last 206 matches.

He is currently valued at £27m, and given his form, he could cost even more than that. Some West Ham fans will be hesitant to capture the 28-year-old given the experience they had with Sebastien Haller, a similar kind of player who lasted just 18 months at the London side before moving to Ajax. However, Weghorst has shown enough on a long-term basis now to indicate he would be more dangerous than the former Eintracht Frankfurt forward.

O Cruzeiro anunciou nesta segunda-feira a dispensa do volante Willians e do lateral-esquerdo Mena.

Victoria not certain of win despite strong start

MELBOURNE – Victoria may have forced Queensland to follow on today but the Bushrangers remain far from certain of claiming a first Pura Cup win in five years against their chief tormentors

AAP01-Dec-2000MELBOURNE – Victoria may have forced Queensland to follow on today but the Bushrangers remain far from certain of claiming a first Pura Cup win in five years against their chief tormentors. The Vics last recorded an outright win over Queensland at the MCG in 1995-96 with the past 10 matches resulting in six Queensland wins and four draws. When the Bushrangers forced Queensland to follow on, shortly before lunch on day three today, that drought looked certain to end. However by stumps, due to a combination of a tired attack, stubborn batting and poor fielding, the Bulls had reached 1-136 in their second innings, still requiring another 64 runs to make Victoria bat again.Queensland began its second innings trailing by 200 runs after being bowled in the first session for 184 in reply to the Vics’ 9-384 declared.Victorian skipper Paul Reiffel took three of the five wickets to fall in Queensland’s first innings today after they resumed at 5-135 and then wasted little time ripping into the visitors’ batting again. In just the seventh over of the Bulls’ second innings he produced a tremendous leg cutter to Jerry Cassell which the young opener spooned to Matthew Mott in the gully. At that stage the Vics looked a chance to claim victory inside three days. But the turning point of the day came nine overs later when Brad Hodge dropped a sitter at first slip off Ian Harvey to give Jimmy Maher a life on six with the Bulls precariously placed at 1-20.Maher took full advantage of his luck and by stumps had reached 59 after occupying the crease for 274 minutes. The left-handed opener received tremendous support from Martin Love, not out 68 in 247 minutes, with the pair combining for an unbroken 130 run stand as the Victorian attack began to tire. The Bushrangers weren’t helped by the failure of Damien Fleming to again bowl today due to a neck injury and the former Test paceman is unlikely to be fit for tomorrow’s crucial last day. That will leave a big burden on Reiffel, Matthew Inness, Colin Miller and Harvey, who have already been in the field for 165 overs. But the Vics will be boosted by the knowledge that if they can get through the top order in reasonable time tomorrow, the Bulls’ tail is unlikely to offer much resistance given its performance this morning when the visitors lost four wickets inside the first 45 minutes.

Dawodu to sign SWFC deal

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a major boost as 20-year-old right-back Josh Dawodu is expected to sign a new contract with the club.

What’s the talk?

Under-23’s right-back Dawodu is set to sign a contract extension with Sheffield Wednesday to prevent him from leaving the club at the end of the month. Dawodu’s current deal expires at the end of June and his agent has revealed that he will be extending his contract with Sheffield Wednesday to put any doubts over his long-term future at the club to bed.

According to The Star, Dawodu trained with the first-team for the majority of the season as Darren Moore looked at the possibility of him making the step up to senior level. The club are said to have high hopes for the up-and-coming right-back.

Dawodu’s agent, Ian Luck, has confirmed that his client is going to put pen to paper on fresh terms at Hillsborough, adding he believes in Moore’s plans for the future. He told The Star:

“He will be signing the new contract he’s been offered… He’s been really impressed with the new manager and is currently in a training camp now so that he’ll be fit and firing by the time he returns to preseason.

“He wants to stay, the goal is to force his way into the first team and become a regular. Josh is working extremely hard to give himself the best chance of doing that, we have had good conversations with Darren Moore and believe in his project for the future.”

Moore will be delighted

Moore will be delighted by this news for a number of reasons. Firstly, the defender is highly thought of at Hillsborough and that suggests that he has the potential to develop into a key first-team player in the future. Therefore, Moore could have the chance to work with Dawodu as a first-team player in League One next season and see how the 20-year-old fares when faced with competitive matches.

The Owls boss will also be buzzing to read the quotes from Luck regarding Dawodu’s thoughts on the former West Brom man. Dawodu is said to have been impressed by Moore since his arrival at the club and that shows that he has been doing something right since taking over during the season. Moore has given Dawodu faith in the long-term plan for the club and that bodes well for the upcoming transfer window as it shows that the manager is capable of convincing young players to buy into his philosophy.

Dawodu could be seen as the eventual successor to Liam Palmer at right-back. Palmer turns 30 in September and is out of contract in 2022, which could open the door for a younger defender to transition into the first-team ahead of him throughout the upcoming campaign with a view to taking over from him full-time for the 2022/23 season. The 29-year-old averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.57 in 39 Championship appearances for Wednesday this season, with a shocking score of 6.38 in 10 starts as a conventional right-back.

Shahid's fighting 60 rescues Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi found the going tough as they struggled to reach 199 for eight wickets in their first innings against Faisalabad on the opening day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Monday

09-Jan-2001Rawalpindi found the going tough as they struggled to reach 199 for eight wickets in their first innings against Faisalabad on the opening day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Monday.Mohammad Zubair was batting on 12 (49 balls) with one four and Test pacer Mohammad Akram (3) were at the crease when play ended with 15 overs still to be bowled. Faisalabad’s slow bowling rate and half an hour loss due to fog in the morning allowed only 66 overs to be completed.Put into bat, the hosts never found it easy to score runs. Experienced Shahid Javed yet again came good scoring a patient 60 spiced with seven fours. He faced 166 balls spanning 220 minutes. Javed reached his fifty off 134 balls with six fours. For the fifth wicket, Javed shared a 57 runs stand in 69 minutes with Pervez Aziz (20 off 39). Haider removed Javed leg before which prompted a sudden collapse in the last session when four quick wickets fell. The hosts were 133 for four at tea. Earlier, Rawalpindi lost opener Asif Mahmood (7) at the total of 14 to medium pacer Shahid Nazir. Naveed Qureshi and Shahid Javed saw off the new ball to carry the total to 47 when opener Naveed snicked one to wicket-keeper Mohammad Salman off Wasim Haider just before lunch. Naveed scored 20 off 47 balls spanning 86 minutes, his knock included four boundaries.Naseer Ahmed (16) and Test batsman Mohammad Wasim (4) yet again failed. Wasim was trapped leg before by Shahid Nazir. The hosts were aided by healthy pile of 43 extras. Shahid Nazir over stepped 16 times, Nadeem Afzal eight, Wasim Haider three and Moazzam Ali one.

Fulham confirm Maxime Le Marchand extension

Fulham have confirmed that Maxime Le Marchand will remain at Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a statement posted on the club’s official website in which the Cottagers confirmed that they have exercised their option to extend the centre-back’s current deal for a further season, keeping him at the club until at least the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Fans will be furious

Considering how infrequently Le Marchand has featured for Fulham since joining the club in a £3.6m deal from Nice back in the summer of 2018, the news that the club have further extended the defender’s deal comes as something of a surprise and could well infuriate fans of the west London club.

Over his three years with the Cottagers so far, the £1.44m-rated man has made just 48 appearances in all competitions, scoring no goals and providing one assist along the way.

Last season, the centre-back featured just twice in the Premier League for Scott Parker’s side, failing to help his team keep a clean sheet, as well as averaging a mere one tackle and 1.5 interceptions per game. These metrics saw the £24,000-per-week 31-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.75, ranking him as Fulham’s 12th-worst performer in the English top flight.

Indeed, it became clear that Parker had no use for the player – whom Tony Khan dubbed a “valuable” asset – back in February, when the manager allowed Le Marchand to leave the club on a temporary basis to join Royal Antwerp for the remainder of the season.

As such, exactly why Fulham have extended the defender’s contract this summer is anyone’s guess, but considering his hefty weekly wage and significant lack of appearances for the club, the Cottagers’ decision is not likely to be one which goes down very well with too many of their supporters.
