Leeds suffer potential Dael Fry blow

Brentford could beat Leeds United to the signing of Middlesbrough centre-back Dael Fry this summer, according to a fresh report which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Fry impresses at Boro

The 23-year-old has made a name for himself at Boro in recent times, shining at the heart of the Championship side’s defence under Neil Warnock.

The 11-cap England under-21 international has already made 138 appearances for his current club and was once lauded as a potential ‘great footballer’ by former manager Aitor Karanka.

The Latest: Brentford could beat Leeds to signing

According to Football League World, Brentford currently lead the race to sign Fry this summer, having earned promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

Leeds, Burnley, Wolves and Southampton are all believed to have scouted the 23-year-old as well, however, as the battle to sign him intensifies.

The Verdict: Not a major issue

While Fry is clearly a young defender with plenty of promise, Marcelo Bielsa may not feel that centre-back is a pressing area to enhance at Elland Road ahead of next season.

The Argentine already has Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk to call upon, so unless one of those leaves, having a fifth centre-back could be deemed as needless.

Should Leeds end up signing Fry, it would certainly be no bad thing – he averaged 1.8 interceptions and 3.9 clearances per game in the Championship last season – but Brentford may need him more than the Whites currently do, and that could tip the scales if a bidding war materialises.

In other news, Leeds have reportedly been offered the chance to sign an exciting English talent this summer. Find out who it is here.

Jacob Martin leads West fightback

Staff Reporter06-Jan-2001A fighting 121 by Jacob Martin led the fightback to help West Zone post 364for 6 wickets at the end of the third day of their Duleep Trophy matchagainst Central Zone at the Vidarbha CA ground in Nagpur on Saturday.Resuming at 94 for 2, overnight batsmen Martin and Wasim Jaffer proceededslowly to forge a 136-run partnership for the third wicket. Jaffer was atrifle unlucky to be caught by the substitute fielder Devendra Bundela ofKulamani Parida when he was on 94. During his 213-minute stay at the crease, Jaffer faced 169 balls while finding the boundary ropes on 15 occasions. The fall of Jaffer brought Abijit Kale to the crease and he and Martintook the score to 289, when Parida castled him. Three overs later Martinhimself fell to a catch by Raza Ali off Kanwat. During his 291-minute stayat the wicket, Martin faced 194 balls and found the signboards 19 times.West Zone skipper Nayan Mongia did precious little and with only five runsadded to the total he departed after being bowled by Kanwat. But the seventh wicket pair of Sairaj Bahutule (17 not out) and Niraj Patel(41) put on an unbeaten 64-run partnership to help West Zone to stumpswithout further damage.

Millwall interested in Allan Campbell

Millwall are interested in a deal to bring Allan Campbell to The Den this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that Gary Rowett’s side are one of a number of EFL clubs keeping a close eye on the Motherwell midfielder ahead of a potential move in the upcoming transfer window.

It is reported that the 22-year-old has decided to call time on his spell at Fir Park, with the £1.08m-rated man rejecting the offer of a new deal to remain with Graham Alexander’s side beyond the summer, with his current contract set to expire in the coming weeks.

Rowett must move

With central midfielder Shaun Williams being set for release by Millwall this summer, the position is undoubtedly one in which Rowett will be looking to strengthen in the upcoming transfer window.

And, considering just how much potential Campbell appears to possess, it is unsurprising to learn of the 47-year-old Lions manager’s interest in the Scotland U21 international.

Over his 34 Scottish Premiership fixtures for Well last term, the £1.5k-per-week man scored four goals and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and winning 4.7 duels per game.

These returns saw the midfielder average a SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as Alexander’s joint ninth-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

Indeed, the “highly-rated” 22-year-old appears to have an extremely promising future in the game, with his manager stating his belief that the youngster is a “shining example” for others at the club.

As such, with Rowett looking to build a side capable of improving on their impressive eighth-place finish in the Championship next season, the addition of a player with a future as bright as Campbell would appear to be a fantastic way to kick start Millwall’s summer transfer business, especially as he would cost the club nothing in fees.

South Africa keen to make it 3-0 in Jamaica

The series may be won, but don’t anyone tell the South Africans that thefifth Test against the West Indies which begins at Sabina Park on Thursdayis any less important than the four which have preceded it

Marcus Prior19-Apr-2001The series may be won, but don’t anyone tell the South Africans that thefifth Test against the West Indies which begins at Sabina Park on Thursdayis any less important than the four which have preceded it.There are always a bundle of platitudes offered ahead of a dead rubber, but somehow the SouthAfrican desire to rub salt into some gaping West Indian wounds has a veryreal ring of truth about it.
Donald- ready to go

</table"There's everything to play for," said veteran fast bowler Allan Donald, now back to full fitness and expected to take his place in the startingeleven. "We can't take our foot off the pedal now – we've got to go outthere and make sure that we finish it off 3-0. The West Indies areprobably going to come out and play positive cricket and try and get somekind of a result, but we can't afford to be relaxed. We've got to go outthere with the same intensity that we've had in four previous Tests."It's a view echoed by coach Graham Ford, keenly aware that SouthAfrica's rivals for global bragging rights will be significantly moreimpressed by a 3-0 series win, a feat achieved by just one side here inthe Caribbean, the 1955 Australians captained by Ian Johnson."I think everybody's fairly relieved that the job's been done because ithas been a very tough series with a lot of tough cricket up until now," Fordsaid. "But I also feel that there's a desire to make it 3-0 rather than2-1."There won't be any trouble motivating the guys for the fifth Test. We're well aware that the rest of the cricketing world have their eyes on thisseries and a 3-0 result shows a real position of strength. It would alsobe good to create a psychological 'plus-factor' going into the one-dayinternationals."The main selection dilemma for the South Africans is whether to go intothe test without a spinner. With Nicky Boje now back in South Africa forsurgery on his shoulder and Donald fit and raring to go, the choice wouldappear to be between the unorthodox left-arm spin of Paul Adams ot theall-round abilities of Justin Kemp. However, at practice on Wednesday, captain Shaun Pollock appeared to indicate that both players could get thenod, with Makhaya Ntini standing down."I'm always a bit loathe to go into a Test match without a spinner"Pollock said. "Nicky Boje not being here does upset the balance of the sidebecause he gives us that extra batting option coming in at nine, so we mighthave to wangle things a bit and, for example, maybe Justin Kemp plays and weleave out one of the big quicks to give us more depth in our batting. We'lltalk about it tonight but I think I would be very loathe to go into the Testwithout a spinner."Of course, Pollock has already on this tour referred to Lance Kluseneras 'our version of a spinner', so it is quite possible that Ntini willretain his place and and Adams will miss out.

</tableWhatever eleven the South Africans name on Thursday morning, the SabinaPark Test is unlikely to be about any of them. The game will be about oneman, taking a final bow on his home stage. It will of course be the last time the world will see cricket's leadingwicket-taker, Courtney Walsh, glide into his languid, rangy delivery stride. It will be the fulfilment of a long-held desire to see out his career infront of his own fans."When I made the anouncement that I would tour Australia, I indicatedthat I'd be keen to finish at home andat that point in time I was told the last Test against South Africa was inJamaica. That has not changed," Walsh said.It should be quite a send-off.

England's poor weather rules the roost at the moment

The end of another frustrating week dominated by the wet spring weather

Stephen Fleming02-May-2001The end of another frustrating week dominated by the wet spring weather. The only cricket we have had was a day and half in Derby but even then conditions were marginal with the run-ups and outfield very soggy. While the players are having to kill some time, spare a thought for the groundsmen around the country who are battling away for hours to get the grounds fit only to have passing showers ruin all their work.During rain the dressing room becomes a hive of activity and in most cricket autobiographies there will be several stories that have come from a rainy day. There are card schools, there are readers. There are guys who can’t keep still and there are those that just go to sleep. There are those who tidy up a few loose ends, then there’s the ‘Cat’, Phil Tufnell.Tuffers is great entertainment, passionate about his cricket and enjoys what he’s doing. Not renowned for his batting ability or courage at the wicket, he has had me in stitches this week talking about his past performances with the blade and what to expect from him this summer. It’s a nice time to be playing cricket in England. When I last toured here there was a lot of negativity surrounding the game and in particular the national team. That was two years ago and it’s completely changed.England have won their last four series and under Duncan Fletcher and Nasser Hussain they have gained direction and, more importantly, confidence. With Pakistan and Australia touring this summer England will be tested, but as long as they keep believing, we are in for some exciting cricket.I have spent a bit of time this week locating fellow Kiwi cricketers who have been gliding into the country to play a bit of cricket in the off season.Mathew Sinclair and Mark Richardson are two internationals who are over here, as well as several first-class players who have taken the chance to play some cricket abroad. Matt is based up in the North while Ritchie will be based close to me in London. Our next commitment for New Zealand is late July, when we visit Sri Lanka for a couple of weeks. Until then we just sit and wait for a break in the weather and hope we get some luck when the cards are dealt.
