Chelsea: £30m Kurt Zouma deal is good business if next boss gives the nod

What an exciting transfer window this is shaping up to be for Everton supporters.

After signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona permanently following his successful loan spell last season, the Merseyside club could be about to do the same thing with Kurt Zouma.

According to BBC Sport, they have made the 24-year-old their next top transfer priority, with Chelsea likely to demand in excess of £30m.

The Blues, however, would be crazy to sanction a deal before bringing in their new boss. Winning 3.1 aerial duels per game in the Premier League last season (as per WhoScored), Zouma would maintain a real aerial presence to the team’s backline.

If Chelsea’s next manager has other ideas, though, selling Zouma could prove to be a smart bit of business.

At £30m, the west London club have the chance to make just under £17m profit after buying the Frenchman from Saint-Etienne for just £13.14m back in 2014 (as per Transfermarkt).

And it is not like Chelsea will be short of options at the back. They already have David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to call upon while Fikayo Tomori is also there for back-up.

Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see what the next man in the Stamford Bridge dugout does. But for £30m and with his approval, Chelsea could end up playing a blinder here.

Chelsea fans, would selling Zouma for £30m be good business? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Leeds fans excited by the prospect of Sunjic

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are excited after news emerged that their club had bid for Croatia international Ivan Sunjic.

The Daily Mail wrote a report stating that the Yorkshire club had bid for the midfielder, but the Whites also face competition from Birmingham City for his signature.

The Yorkshire club have apparently highlighted him as a potential Kalvin Phillips replacement with the 23-year-old continuing to be linked with a move to Aston Villa this summer.

The Croatian looks like he could have what it takes to replace the Englishman in Marcelo Bielsa’s system.

The youngster is a Europa League regular, having appeared eight times in the competition last term.

Aged just 22, he could be the type of player Marcelo Bielsa wants to work his magic on, and understandably the prospect of signing a Europa League level midfielder has excited a number of United supporters.

Leeds fans far from happy with Jack Clarke comments

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are far from happy with Jack Clarke after his comments about leaving his desire to leave Leeds were published in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The 18-year-old showed a complete lack of loyalty in his comments as he stated: “Obviously there was always a plan to move on from Leeds eventually but I’d have much preferred it if we’d have gone up last year.”

Of course, Marcelo Bielsa’s side weren’t promoted last term as they lost in the playoff semi-finals against Derby County.

The teenager did eventually leave Elland Road as he signed for Tottenham for an initial fee of £10m.

He then returned to the Whites on loan for the 2019/20 campaign, but many fans were riled up by his comments as they indicate that their young star was always planning on getting away from the club that handed him his debut.

The youngster made it very clear that his long-term plans were never in Yorkshire, and that hasn’t pleased a number of supporters.

Manchester United fans react as interest in Sean Longstaff cools

[ad_pod ]

What a topsy-turvy world the transfer window is. Just when you think you’ve made some progress on a deal and are waiting for the club to embarrass themselves with those cringe-inducing introduction videos on Twitter, a spanner gets thrown in the works.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff was perhaps on his way to Manchester United, but now according to The Evening Standard, the Red Devils may just have pulled out of the race to sign him.

The report claims United have been left “stunned” by the Magpies’ £50m valuation and that the club had initially only expected to pay a maximum of £25m; as such it is suggested Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are ready to drop their interest in the 21-year-old.

After hearing the news the club might have pulled out of the deal, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter and many were rather relieved by the decision.

Supporters of the Manchester side were left stunned by the price tag as they claimed that they had “dodged a bullet” and insisted that Longstaff was an “overrated player”.

Indeed, many suggested the price tag being quoted was “crazy” and that the deal was “embarrassing”.

Aston Villa fans want Lovre Kalinic to get a second chance next season

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa have been in the market for a new goalkeeper this season, being linked with a number of stoppers including Tom Heaton, Jack Butland and Martin Dubravka.

With that in mind, it seems likely that one of their goalkeepers already at the club could leave. That appears to be the case with Lovre Kalinic who The Sunday People (21/07, page 54) claim could depart for as less as £3m.

The Croatian was signed in January but after being troubled with an injury, found himself dislodged by Jed Steer who went onto play a key part for the remainder of the season, saving a penalty in the play-offs against West Brom.

However, despite his heroics and the lack of football Kalinic played, it appears as though supporters want to see him stay at Villa Park.

One fan claimed he played well against Minnesota, urging for him to be given another chance. Other supporters held similar sentiments, suggesting he should be made to fight for his place.

A further individual went as far as saying they had more confidence in the 29-year-old than they did in Steer.

The goalkeeper only signed a four year deal with the club over the winter, before going onto play seven times in the Championship.

Liverpool fans loved Naby Keita’s performance against Lyon

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool recorded a 3-1 win over Lyon on Wednesday in what was their final pre-season match ahead of the start of competitive action.

Indeed, the Reds will take on Manchester City in the Community Shield this weekend before facing Norwich City in their 2019-20 Premier League opener on August 9.

It has been a tough pre-season for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but the victory over Lyon has provided Liverpool with a morale boost at just the right time.

And it would be fair to say that the display of Naby Keita impressed the supporters.

Many of the fans have recently tipped the midfielder to kick on for the club after struggling to make his mark during his maiden campaign at Anfield.

Keita played the first 45 minutes of the clash with Lyon and the 24-year-old’s all-action display certainly left a positive impression.

Liverpool forced to carry Georginio Wijnaldum as they lose to Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Georginio Wijnaldum does not quite appear to be up to speed ahead of the 2019/20 season following his performance against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.

On the chalkboard

The Netherlands international struggled to adjust to the pace of the game at Wembley as Jurgen Klopp’s men lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Wijnaldum did have one shot on goal in the 90 minutes but he was also the only player to miss a penalty in the shootout as City won 5-4 on spot-kicks.

Per WhoScored, he touched the ball 58 times in total and, while he had a pass success rate of 89%, he did not register a key pass.

Wijnaldum also won just one of his three attempted tackles and was dribbled past on two occasions.

He also failed to make an interception and was dispossessed twice while he also didn’t complete a dribble.

A lack of dynamism

Liverpool began the game with a midfield of Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

The three are all talented players but the Dutchman, there, is the dynamic presence.

He is the player expected to carry the ball forward and attempt to break the lines.

Against City, he was unable to do that.

[ad_pod ]

That may, of course, be down to the marking job of the Premier League champions but his inability to meet the required intensity dragged Liverpool’s game down.

Indeed, in the second half, with the introductions of Adam Lallana and Naby Keita, the Reds began to gain more of a stranglehold over possession.

That was down to the duo carrying Wijnaldum as opposed to the other way around, however, with the former Newcastle United man often nothing more than a passenger at Wembley.

The Reds do have the squad depth to cope if he struggles again in the opening game of the season, against Norwich City on Friday, but this showing should concern Klopp as he bids to once again challenge at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool fans have their say on the Joe Gomez vs Joel Matip debate

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp doesn’t tend to have too many selection headaches these days, but he did face a tough one ahead of the Premier League opener against Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night.

Virgil van Dijk had been partnered by Joe Gomez in the Community Shield five days earlier, but Joel Matip threw himself into contention by coming on and scoring at Wembley against Manchester City.

Nevertheless, Klopp stuck with the England international for the visit of the Canaries with his African teammate having to settle for place on the substitutes’ bench.

Some Reds fans on Twitter were far from happy with Gomez’s display though, and it is causing plenty of debate over on the club’s official forum too, where there is a specific Gomez vs Matip thread.

Here’s what supporters are saying about the duo on there…

Rather mixed, then?

Pretty much, yeah.

These supporters appear divided on which player is the better one to partner van Dijk right now, although some interesting points were made in regards to Matip especially.

One individual believes he is in better form than Gomez right now, and if that is the case then surely he should be in the starting XI in what is such an important campaign for the Reds.

Another fan believes that Matip being in the side over the Englishman helps Trent Alexander-Arnold, which is an intriguing point of view.

Gomez doesn’t go without the love though, with one pointing to some of his elite performances last season for why he should get the nod, and another saying it could take some time for him to get back up to speed following his injury issues.

With the Super Cup against Chelsea on Wednesday followed by a trip to Southampton on Saturday, it will be interesting to see what Klopp decides to do – in my view it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Matip start in Istanbul, before Gomez returns to the team at St Mary’s.

Leeds fans offer comical response as watching football is deemed good for your health

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans are never shy to voice their opinions. From Kiko Casilla to their defensive calamities, they usually have something to say in damning fashion.

Yet, on this occasion, they’ve found a reason to be rather comical, reacting in a hilarious way to research conducted by the University of Leeds.

They concluded that watching football could actually be good for your health in a study that said watching your team win will have a positive impact on you. It also found that it can lift spectators mood for a whole 24 hours after the game has finished.

However, Leeds supporters beg to differ, claiming watching someone like Casilla ensured it wasn’t great for the body.

The Spaniard has a tendency to make a mistake, committing an atrocious error in the playoffs which allowed Derby to score after he collided with Liam Cooper. He also looked nervy at times against Salford on Tuesday too.

A further fan, meanwhile, indicated that it would be good if they stopped playing Patrick Bamford, someone who missed six chances last weekend. Another individual said that the stress of supporting Leeds would shorten lives.

Another part of the research conducted stated that heart rates increased by 27% after a Leeds United goal compared to 22% after an opposition goal.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama wanted by Club Brugge

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Belgian side Club Brugge are attempting to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama, per Sky Sports.

What’s the word?

The Kenya international has struggled for fitness in recent months and has yet to play a single minute in 2019/20.

He was on the bench against Aston Villa for the 3-1 win that kicked off Spurs’ season but he played the 90 minutes just twice in the Premier League in 2018/19 and is now nearing a departure.

Brugge, Sky reports, are in talks to take the former Southampton midfielder to Belgium in this transfer window, and he could be a replacement for Marvelous Nakamba, who was sold to Villa earlier this summer.

Ravaged by injuries

Wanyama was excellent in his debut season at Spurs.

Signed from Southampton in 2016, he was imperious in 16/17, making 36 Premier League appearances and, per WhoScored, winning 2.5 tackles per game, making 1.1 interceptions, 1.9 clearances and racking up a pass completion rate of 87.5%.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Compare that to last season, where, in 13 appearances, Wanyama won one tackle per game, made 0.5 interceptions, 0.7 clearances and had a pass completion rate of 81%.

It’s clear, then, that this is a player who is a shadow of his former self and allowing him to depart is in the best interests of both Spurs and Wanyama; perhaps he can rescue his career in Belgium.
