Guardiola will undoubtedly go down as one of the best managers of all time, partly for the success he has had at Barcelona, City, and Bayern Munich, but also for how many coaches have been influenced by his style and tactics. He will certainly be a very hard act to follow at City.

Every completed Championship deal in the 2025 winter transfer window

For many, the Championship is the best league in the world – and with good reason. Once again this year at the halfway stage, we have a title tussle, an unclear play-off picture and a frantic fight to avoid the drop.

More excitement is set to come the way of fans of second-tier clubs as the January transfer window opens for business. Running until 11pm on Monday 3rd February, it is a chance for all 24 teams to bolster their ranks ahead of the critical stages of the campaign.

The likes of Leeds United and Sheffield United are set to scrap for the Championship title, though Burnley are hot on their heels looking to steal an automatic promotion slot for themselves.

Sunderland look set to return to the play-offs under Regis Le Bris provided they can sustain their promising start, while surprise package Watford could yet upset perennial contenders such as West Bromwich Albion for a top-six slot.

At the other end, Plymouth Argyle look doomed, so may require some inspired business over the next month, while newbies Oxford United and Portsmouth are among those battling for Championship survival after testing returns to the second tier.

Here, we have every in and out from each Championship club throughout the winter window.

John Eustace’s Blackburn are well in the play-off hunt, even amid a disappointing downturn in form since the new year. Eustace and Rovers will be hoping that the addition of Adam Forshaw – a promotion winner with Leeds in 2020 – can aid their play-off bid.

Experienced Championship defender Dion Sanderson is their only other arrival thus far, so bar a late flurry in the window’s final days, it seems as though Eustace will trust the players he has got to get over the line come May.

Bristol City are yet to add in the winter window, despite starting to move into play-off contention in the Championship. Whether they decide to recruit a killer signing that makes the difference this term remains to be seen, but Liam Manning’s side have so far stuck with what they’ve got.

The only activity at Ashton Gate this January has been through the exit door, with attacker Fally Mayulu the latest to depart on loan to Austrian outfit Sturm Graz, having started just three second-tier games all season.

Centre-back Rob Atkinson was also among those to leave on loan, with the 26-year-old finally getting some game time after not getting a look-in this term.

Scott Parker’s Burnley have been the most active side in the Championship early on in the window, with two incomings in the first couple of days.

One is a familiar face in Ashley Barnes, who re-joined the club after ending his contract at Norwich. The Austria international is something of a promotion specialist, so could be a handy addition to Parker’s side.

The other arrival has seen Denmark-born Peruvian Oliver Sonne join from Danish outfit Silkeborg in a deal worth around €3m (£2.5m). The full-back bolsters a Clarets defence that has conceded just nine goals in the Championship all season.

Luton’s return to the Championship is on the verge of becoming a total disaster, with the Hatters in danger of falling through the proverbial trap door as they face the prospect of successive relegations.

With the window entering its final week, Middlesbrough picked up two key arrivals as they look to bolster their bid for the play-offs. 'Didn't know what day it was' – Alan Shearer rips Arsenal apart for sluggish start to PSG loss but thinks he knows exactly what Gunners need to do to save themselves in Champions League tie

Legendary Premier League forward Alan Shearer has shared his thoughts on Arsenal's 1-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

  • Provided a scathing assessment of Gunners' display

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Iconic Premier League striker Shearer didn’t hold back in his assessment of Arsenal’s performance, criticising the team for their lethargic start in their Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. The Newcastle legend remarked that the Gunners looked completely lost in the opening stages, saying they "didn't know what day it was." Despite the setback, Shearer believes all is not lost for Mikel Arteta’s side and outlined the key adjustments Arsenal must make to keep their Champions League hopes alive in the return leg.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although Arsenal gained momentum as the game progressed, it was PSG who took the game by the scruff of its neck. Indeed, a brilliant team move saw a red-hot Ousmane Dembele find the back of the net in just the fourth minute, leaving Arsenal shell-shocked. In the lead-up to the first leg, Arteta's troops were full of belief, and why not? After all, they were heading into the semi-finals on the back of a 5-1 demolition of reigning champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. However, Luis Enrique's side brought them down to earth as the Gunners failed to impose their gameplan and struggled to keep up with Les Parisiens' spirited teamplay.

  • WHAT ALAN SHEARER SAID

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer opined on Arsenal's dreadful first half performance: "It was an amazing atmosphere at the Emirates before Arsenal's Champions League semi-final first leg against PSG but that changed after three minutes with PSG's goal. When you go to a hostile ground, where you know the atmosphere is going to be amazing for the home team, you want to keep the ball and, if possible, get an early goal just to kill the crowd. PSG did that.

"Arsenal never recovered. For the first 20 or 30 minutes, they didn't know what day it was. Then they recovered and were the better team for ten or 15 minutes before half-time – and they didn't need half-time.

"There were two really, really good chances for Arsenal. One in the first-half with Gabriel Martinelli one-on-one and then a one-on-one in the second half involving Leandro Trossard. Other than that, I know they had the disallowed offside goal which took far too long considering he was half a yard offside. The positive was that it only ended 1-0. It could've been a lot worse.

"At 1-0 going into the second leg, Arsenal still have a chance. What was already a difficult opportunity against a very good side has become a little bit more difficult, but it's not impossible.

  • HOW ARSENAL CAN BEAT PSG ACCORDING TO SHEARER

Shearer, though, believes that Arsenal are still very much alive in the tie. The Englishman explained what the London outfit needs to do better in the return leg next week: "Arsenal missed Thomas Partey in the first leg against PSG. I'm not sure that Dembele has that amount of space in the first three minutes if Partey is playing. He'll be playing next week which means we'll hopefully see a better Declan Rice because it's not his best role, sitting and trying to sweep up play as a number six.

"Rice is better when he's driving forward and there was one time last night where he was able to drive forward and that was what created the opportunity for [Leandro] Trossard.

"Arsenal's pressing has to be better. For the first half-an-hour in the first leg, they didn't know when to press or sit and it looked really confusing in terms of when and how to go. They didn't get that right and ended up getting picked off. That can improve massively, but they don't have to go for it straight away. If it's still 1-0 at half-time in Paris then that's fine.

"Arsenal just have to be a little bit more patient, go with what happens, keep it tight and don't concede because if they concede the first goal early on then it'll be pretty much curtains for them."

Their next Kristoffer Ajer: Celtic in talks to sign "towering" star for £0

Fair to say, this season is going rather well at Parkhead for Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently ten points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership, with a game in hand, are through to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup and have already got their hands on the League Cup, defeating Rangers on penalties in December.

Meantime, the Hoops have reached the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in 12 seasons, so go into Wednesday night’s clash with Aston Villa with the pressure off, still seeking to finish as high up the table as possible.

In the transfer market, it’s been a mixed week for the Celtic support, with fans’ favourite Jota returning from Stade Rennais, 18 months after departing for the Saudi Pro League, although this did heartbreakingly see Kyōgo Furuhashi go in the opposite direction.

Now, could the Scottish champions be in the market for a new centre-back?

Celtic looking to bolster their back-line

According to a report by Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports News, Celtic are “interested” in Odense centre-back Tobias Slotsager.

The report notes that talks have already taken place with the defender’s agents and with the player out of contact in the summer, he could be signed on a Bosman.

So who is Tobias Slotsager?

What the experts say about Tobias Slotsager

Well, Slotsager is a 19-year-old centre-back, who’s been with Odense Boldklub since the age of 13, making his professional debut three years later against Vejle Boldklub in May 2022.

In total, he’s now made 59 appearances for OB, earning rave reviews, despite the fact the Striwerne were actually relegated from the Danish Superligaen last season, thereby dropping out of the top flight for the first time since 1999.

Despite his team’s struggles, Jamie Rietiker-Wright of Sport Republic believes Slotsager is “a special young defender”. Further reviews come from Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout who labelled him a “complete & elegant centre-back”, while a report by Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur described him as a “towering defender”, exclaiming he is “one of the greatest talents” in football right now.

Slotsager featured in the Guardian’s Next Generation series for 2023, in which Michael Yokhin noted he is “tactically astute way beyond his age”, while Odense youth coach Tonny Hermansen stated “Tobias is a player with huge potential, and we believe that he could go really far. Despite all the praise, [he] keeps his feet on the ground and continues to work hard in every training session”.

How Tobias Slotsager could be Celtic's next Ajer

A move for Slotsager would be reminiscent of when Celtic signed an 18-year-old Kristoffer Ajer from Eliteserien outfit Start in 2016, for a reported £650,000.

Ajer would go on to make 176 appearances for Celtic, winning nine major trophies, before being sold to Brentford for £13.5m, representing a massive profit.

So, let’s compare Ajer’s time in Norway to Slotsager’s career in Denmark so far.

As shown in the table, Ajer was similarly inexperienced when he joined Celtic as Slotsager is now, having made a similar number of appearances and minutes at similar levels; Denmark’s top-flight is currently ranked 16th by UEFA, albeit OB are currently in the second-tier, while the Norwegian first division actually came in at 22nd when Ajer most-recently played there in 2016.

Former Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

In terms of the other statistics, Ajer does come out on top, but that does not mean Slotsager’s numbers are not impressive because, as noted by Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout, the teenager ranked first in last season’s Superligaen for % of defensive duels won (82.5%).

Given he is still only 19, Slotsager may not be ready to have an immediate impact in Celtic’s first team, similar to Ajer, who spent the second half of his first season in Scotland on loan at Kilmarnock, but this young defender appears to be a special talent, so the Premiership champions should do everything in their power to snap-up his future.

Sheffield United have struck gold on “leader” who’s worth more than Cannon

Chris Wilder will hope Sheffield United’s well-known spending habits across the last few transfer windows end up paying off instead of looking like a rash waste of cash.

Amazingly – since being relegated back down to the Championship – the Blades have purchased a ridiculous 18 new players in a bid to rebuild and go again, with the considerable churn seeing them pick up seven fresh faces in the window that has just slammed shut.

The busy winter window did see them only fork out for some permanent purchase, however, but it was a costly one at that, with former Leicester City man Tom Cannon joining the ever-expanding group for a whopping £10m.

Sheffield United's statement buy of Cannon

The promotion chasers clearly wanted to send out a statement to the rest of the division that they won’t be easily toppled in the ongoing race for the top two spots, with Cannon also a wanted figure by fellow Premier League hopefuls in Sunderland.

In the end, Cannon would choose South Yorkshire over the Stadium of Light, with the Blades confident that the 22-year-old poacher can fire in the goals to make an instant return to the top flight happen.

After all, when on the books of Stoke City earlier in the season as an on-fire loanee, Cannon would help himself to a mightily impressive 11 strikes from 25 games.

Therefore, parent employers Leicester would have been compelled to bump up his price tag to cash in on his red-hot form, as the Blades then coughed up a hefty £10m to land the Championship’s flavour of the month.

He hasn’t opened his goalscoring account yet for his new employers, but everyone at the club will hope the goals start flowing soon, considering he is only two games down in his fresh surroundings.

Whilst Cannon has stolen most of the United headlines in recent weeks, there are stars already at Bramall Lane worth more than the 22-year-old hotshot, with this one ace definitely a firm favourite of Wilder’s.

The Sheffield United "leader" who's worth more than Cannon

Joining the top-flight ranks last season as a surprise buy from Belgian outfit Lommel S.K., Vinicius Souza has slowly but surely become an integral part of the Blades machine since his arrival in England.

Market Movers

Whilst his lowly team did eventually accept their grim relegation fate last campaign, the Brazilian would still stick out as a valiant battler in the middle of the park.

Indeed, the Rio De Janeiro-born star won a punchy 6. duels on average that season to try and gift his side some desperately needed grit.

Wilder has regularly waxed lyrical about the 25-year-old off the back of these constantly committed displays, with the 57-year-old notably stating in November last year that Souza was a “real leader” and an “outstanding” individual to have around the place.

He has excelled in the drop-down a division too, with the occasional Blades captain’s average duels won count increasing to 6.8 in the often full-blooded Championship, leading to his transfer value also going up.

Year on year, ever since emerging onto the scene at Lommel, Souza has seen his valuation steadily increase, with his price tag coming in now at £11.6m – according to Transfermarkt – which actually makes him an even more prized asset than the £10m Cannon.

Reports before the new second-tier season started even suggested that Wilder’s men wanted Fulham to fork out £30m to win his services, with Marco Silva’s Cottagers perhaps trying to exploit the Blades’ fragile nature after relegation.

But, Wilder and Co managed to thankfully keep a firm grip on their star, with the 25-year-old no doubt keen to continue to put in some top displays, alongside the wave of new signings, to help his defiant side leap straight back up to the Premier League.

West Brom ace receives latest injury news as "frustrating" season continues

As West Bromwich Albion set their sights on finishing inside the Championship’s top six, they’ll have to do so without one particular player who is continuing to endure a “frustrating” season.

West Brom injury news

Currently sat sixth and on a run of just two wins in their last five games, the Baggies are walking a tightrope and simply must get back to winning ways against Oxford United this weekend before what will be a difficult trip to face Leeds United.

Of course, what has not helped their season is the interruption of Carlos Corberan’s decision to swap The Hawthorns for Valencia midway through his side’s push for promotion. In his place, Tony Mowbray has since made his long-awaited return and will be desperate to create yet more history in the Midlands now that he is back in the technical area.

A frustrating draw at Millwall last time out summed up West Brom’s campaign fairly accurately. The Baggies have lacked conviction at times which could yet prove more and more costly as the fixtures come thick and fast. Meanwhile, at a time when experience is key, they’ve suffered some disappointing news.

As confirmed by West Brom, Jed Wallace will now miss several weeks of action after suffering a calf strain during his side’s 1-1 draw against Millwall last time out. The club captain shared his disappointment on X, speaking on what he said has been a “frustrating” season on a personal note.

Having started just six Championship games all season, the 30-year-old will be forced to watch on from the sidelines as West Brom take on arguably their most important run of games in the current campaign.

A season to forget for Jed Wallace

An undisputed starter last season, Wallace has fallen down the pecking order in the current campaign in what could be a sign of things to come for the 30-year-old captain. On the goals front, meanwhile, he’s also suffered a frustrating drop-off – scoring just one in all competitions and failing to improve on last season’s total of six.

Whilst the numbers suggest that the Baggies are capable of coping without the winger, however, he remains their captain and a man with plenty of experience ahead of their battle to keep hold of their play-off spot.

At a crucial time, such experience should always be welcomed with open arms. Left to watch on and recover though, Wallace should be desperate to make a return before the end of the campaign and, crucially, for the play-offs if West Brom qualify.

In need of a return to winning ways, West Brom – without Wallace – square off against an Oxford side they must defeat if they are to keep the likes of Coventry City at bay.

Farioli made headlines with his coaching style at Ajax but made a shock exit last week, bidding goodbye to the fans with teary eyes after a disastrous title race collapse in the Eredivisie. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Farioli and Ajax were on the verge of winning the Eredivisie this season but things didn't go as planned after the Dutch club fumbled and threw away a sizeable nine-point lead in their last five matches. As a result of their terrible form towards the end of the campaign, arch-rivals PSV capitalised and clinched the title. Soon after, Farioli bid the Amsterdam club and the fans goodbye, announcing his exit from the club.

  • WHAT FRANCESCO FARIOLI SAID

In a conversation with Ziggo Sport (h/t Football Italia), Farioli said: "There’s a lot of speculation, a lot of rumours. But I do want to get back into coaching. Just like it was with Ajax, I don’t care about the brand or the size of the club. What matters to me is how things are done, and last summer Ajax was exactly what I was looking for.

"It was the right step for my career, and now we’ll see what comes next. We’ll see if and when that opportunity arrives.

"I’m a very demanding person. Before I join a club, I lay all my strengths and weaknesses on the table. ‘Demanding’ is probably the best word to describe me. I want to find a club that’s willing to fight alongside me."
