Rohit ready to take losses in stride with T20 World Cup in mind

Two Super 4s losses. Two lost tosses. Two last-over defeats. Two death-overs mishaps. Two middle-order meltdowns. Two below-par totals. It can go on.All of these must mean a fair few concerns for any team, right? If Rohit Sharma is to be believed, these aren’t panic stations just yet. Perhaps not panic stations but definitely a worry? Nope, not really. Because India have trained themselves to think in such a way that wins and losses are merely part of a bigger picture at the moment, and that big picture is the T20 World Cup next month.Related

Even if those two losses have come in a multi-nation tournament. Let’s be clear. These are the words of a captain who has full faith in his team and their ability to bounce back. Rohit spoke for a good 20 minutes, answering several questions dissecting India’s loss. The one thing he didn’t want these two losses to be associated with was “panic” or “nerves” or “meltdowns”. He seemed slightly irked, unlike his otherwise jovial self at media interactions. So irked that he even offered a free invitation into the dressing room to see the mood in the camp.”I don’t think there’s anything wrong, it looks like it from the outside, but we don’t look at it that way,” Rohit said. “I’ve been at many press conferences, and when you lose such questions will be asked. It’s normal. But as far as the team is concerned you can go in [the dressing room] and see, all the boys are relaxed and chilled. We need to have such an atmosphere whether you win or lose.”Convinced? No? Okay, worry not. He wasn’t going to stop there.”We’ve worked hard to make the team atmosphere that way and all the boys are happy about it. If the dressing room mood is good, eventually the performances you see will happen on the ground. Before the World Cup, it’s important for us to keep the atmosphere good and not judge the boys by wins or losses, performances and non-performances. Because whoever is here, they’re all good. That thought we need to be consistent with.”India’s fate in the Asia Cup is no longer in their hands after their loss to Sri Lanka. They have to beat Afghanistan, but even before they get there, their fate could be sealed on Wednesday if Pakistan beat Afghanistan. The situation is exactly like it was at the T20 World Cup last year, where two straight losses left their campaign in jeopardy. Anything after that was merely a formality, because deep down everyone knew it was all but over.Rohit was also crystal clear “90-95% of the team was settled” and that their quest to try out different things had one result in mind: finding their best XI. Never mind what coach Rahul Dravid spoke of earlier last week, when he said there wasn’t going to be any experimentation. Truth be told, India have been hampered with injuries to Ravindra Jadeja and the absence of two key fast bowlers – who can also hold their own in the death overs – Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel.3:37

Pujara: India’s bowling is not a big concern

In the last two matches, India have been playing two frontline seamers – Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh – along with a third in Hardik Pandya, the allrounder. In Jadeja’s absence, they’ve played two frontline spinners and a third in part-timer Deepak Hooda, who hasn’t bowled in the two games he has played so far.”It’s 90-95% settled, just a few changes that will happen,” Rohit said of the team combination. “When you talk about experiments, yes, we wanted to try out certain things. If you look at the combination we have been playing before the start of the Asia Cup, it was with four seamers, two spinners and the second spinner was an allrounder. I always wanted to try and find answers as to what happens if you play with three seamers and two spinners, and the third spinner being an allrounder.”When you’re playing against quality opposition, you want to challenge yourself. This was missing in our books; we’d never tried that combination. We wanted to try and see what happens here as well. In hindsight, our fourth seamer [Avesh Khan] who was here was not available for selection for the last two games because he was sick.”Yes, there are a lot of questions we need to answer, and along the way, in the three-four series we’ve played, we have found some answers. There will be a time where we will draw a line and say, ‘this is the combination we want to play for the World Cup.’ After this, we have two more series and then the World Cup. Till our squad is announced, we can try out a few players.”Rohit was then asked if there was any merit in playing Hooda if he wasn’t going to bowl. On Wednesday, India made a tactical pick by bringing R Ashwin into the XI to try and win the match-up battle with Sri Lanka’s left-hand batters. But with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, the two right-handed openers, adding 97 in 11.1 overs, Rohit wasn’t left with much breathing space to introduce Hooda’s part-time offspin.”Yes, we have the sixth bowling option, but we also wanted to try out with five options and see what happens and what doesn’t happen,” he explained. “Today Hooda was there, but both their right-handers [openers] were set, and I didn’t think I could bring him on then because we were looking to take wickets through our attacking spinners Ashwin and [Yuzvendra] Chahal. Yes, if we got early wickets, I wanted to bowl Hooda, he was in my plan. But yes, six options is always nice. When we play the World Cup it will be at the back of our mind to play with six options.”What about Rishabh Pant versus Dinesh Karthik? It was unlikely Rohit was going to leave without being asked that. What was likely, and perhaps predictable, was the reasoning, which, all said, isn’t without merit. Jadeja’s absence has meant India don’t have another left-hand batter in the top six, which led to Pant getting the nod ahead of Karthik.”See, it is simple. We wanted a left-hander to bat in the middle,” Rohit said. “That’s why Dinesh Karthik is out. Not because of form or anything. We wanted a left-hand batter in the middle to take pressure off, but it didn’t happen. But by no means DK has been dropped because of poor form. We always want to have flexibility in the group. We will keep changing players every now and then depending on the opposition. Four-five batters will play, but there will always be those one-two changes in the batting.”

Hampshire warm up for quarter-finals with ninth win in ten matches

Prolific Vince scores 65 as Fuller chimes in with bat and ball to trump Sussex cameos

ECB Reporters Network03-Jul-2022Hampshire warmed up for the Vitality Blast quarter-finals with their ninth victory in ten matches when they beat the Sussex Sharks by five wickets at Hove. For Sussex, it was their eighth defeat in their last nine games. The only surprise was that Sussex took the game to the final over. Hampshire looked on course for a more comfortable victory when their prolific captain James Vince and Ben McDermott put on 86 for the first wicket, striking at ten runs an over. But Hampshire’s batting faltered after Vince skied Delray Rawlins to the keeper for a 42-ball 65. After the powerplay some tight bowling from Rashid Khan and Ravi Bopara and a flurry of middle-order wickets left them needing 43 off the final five overs and then 39 off the last three. When that boiled down to 19 off two Sussex were still in the game. But when George Garton was called up to bowl the penultimate over Ross Whiteley and James Fuller thumped it for 15. That meant that leg-spinner Will Beer was on a hiding to nothing when he was called up to bowl the last over, in his last game for the club, with just four runs needed. Fuller cracked the first delivery over midwicket for four. The match was something of a dead rubber as Hampshire had already qualified for the quarter-finals, while Sussex were out of the competition. For that reason Tom Alsop, originally signed on loan from Hampshire – but recently signed on a permanent basis – was given special permission to play, though ultimately illness meant he was not available. The Sussex innings was full of cameos. They lost powerplay wickets and after five overs had scored only 28 runs for 2. In the second over the recently prolific Ali Orr skied Brad Wheal to Vince at mid-on. Then Josh Philippe lost his middle stump playing on to Chris Wood, who swung the ball in unpromising conditions.Sussex red-ball captain Tom Haines, playing his first T20 game of the season, and Harrison Ward, took 21 off the sixth over, but then Ward lofted Tom Prest to long on and Haines was stumped charging a googly from Mason Crane. Rawlins swatted two sixes in a 22-ball 29 and Bopara made 35 off 25.The most entertaining batting came at the end. Garton top-scored with 37 off just 17 deliveries, with three fours and three sixes, one a vast one over long-on. And Rashid scored a typically unorthodox 25 off a dozen balls. Somehow, Sussex had scrambled together a competitive score.

Atlético Morelia president believes promotion and relegation will be reinstated in Liga MX in 2026

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

José Luis Higuera, president of Atlético Morelia, says he expects promotion and relegation to return to Liga MX by mid-2026. Speaking in an interview with Caliente TV, Higuera claimed the decision had already been agreed upon and signed during previous league meetings—though no official confirmation has been issued by Liga MX or the Mexican Football Federation.

"Everything will be reinstated in 2026, as agreed upon and signed in the assemblies. Technically, promotion and relegation are suspended, not eliminated, and they will return in mid-2026. And it's not just me saying this – our High Commissioner has publicly confirmed it," Higuera stated.

"I would say that what harms our football the most, even more than the temporary absence of promotion and relegation, is the relocation of franchises. You don’t see that in any major football league around the world. Of course, you also can’t truly understand Liga MX without promotion or relegation, but I believe the top-flight owners themselves have realized that this situation doesn't even benefit their business," he added.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In 2020, due to the global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexican football executives decided to temporarily suspend the promotion and relegation system in Liga MX. This decision was made to support franchise owners in the first division and strengthen Liga Expansión, with the idea that, years later, the system would return with a stronger second division. However, it seemed that this reform would remain permanent.

This decision mainly affected the teams in the second division. Teams like Atlante, Leones Negros de la UDG, Venados de Mérida, and Atlético Morelia are among those that have expressed their dissatisfaction in recent years with the suspension of promotion and relegation. But, according to Liga MX, these teams do not meet the necessary requirements to be First Division clubs. It's a stance that has been heavily criticized by executives from the mentioned teams, who have even taken the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

    WHAT MIKEL ARRIOLA SAID

At the end of 2023, Mikel Arriola, president of Liga MX and interim commissioner of FMF, last spoke about the promotion and relegation issue. He assured that the rules would not change in the near future, indicating that the suspension would continue for a couple of more years. "The rules will not change. We are working very hard to create a predictable environment for investors, both for the First Division and Expansion. We need to wait and see what happens", he stated.

Jaguares de Chiapas was the last team to be relegated from Liga MX, after their relegation in the Clausura 2017. However, starting in the Clausura 2018, a new rule was implemented in the league that allowed teams at risk of relegation to keep their place in the First Division under certain conditions. This rule stated that the team finishing in last place in the Coefficient Table could avoid relegation as long as they made a financial contribution, and if the Ascenso team that had earned their place in the First Division did not meet the requirements to occupy that spot. This measure was part of a series of reforms aimed at strengthening Liga MX and ensuring the financial stability of the teams.

Arsenal ready to rival Unai Emery for £33m striker "in the mould" of Aguero

Arsenal are ready to rival Aston Villa boss Unai Emery for a £33 million striker who’s “in the mould” of Man City legend Sergio Aguero, as reports continue to link Mikel Arteta with a new centre-forward.

Arsenal targeting Kai Havertz alternative with Gabriel Jesus out of form

Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday was much-needed for Arteta after their disappointing draw to Fulham last weekend, but it was yet another evening to forget for striker Gabriel Jesus overall.

The Brazilian’s poor form continues, and he is still waiting to add to his tally of just one goal in all competitions so far this season, meaning Arteta is quite reliant on makeshift centre-forward Kai Havertz to deliver on a consistent-enough basis.

This has also led to constant rumours that the club’s interim sporting director Jason Ayto, working in tandem with managing director Richard Garlick, could look at new striker options as early as the January transfer window.

There are suggestions that Arsenal are targeting Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic as one of the few options on their shortlist, with the Serbian enjoying an exceptional campaign in Turin and attracting interest as his contract is set to expire in 2026.

As well as Vlahovic, Arsenal continue to monitor Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig after failing with an offer to bring him to north London in the summer window.

Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres is on Arsenal’s radar as well, following another sensational few months in the Primeira Liga for Coventry City’s ex-star striker, but it appears they also have a fairly new, more astute option financially to consider – in the form of Bologna’s Santiago Castro.

Arsenal "ready to rival" Aston Villa for Santiago Castro

According to CaughtOffside, the young Argentine is attracting admiring glances from within the Emirates Stadium, so much so that Arsenal are “ready to rival” Aston Villa for Castro next year.

The £33 million centre-forward is also garnering interest from the likes of Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Everton, with Serie A champions Inter Milan and Juve also keeping tabs on Castro with a view to potentially moving for him.

The 20-year-old has scored five goals and provided six assists in all competitions this term, with Castro’s most impressive performance this term coming in the Coppa Italia, where his three assists and sole strike helped to knock Monza out with a dominant 4-0 win.

It is worth noting that some media outlets have called Castro a striker “in the mould” of Aguero (Arsenal Insider), and if he’s anything like City’s all-time record goalscorer, the Argentine Under-23 international could prove a snip at £33m.

IPL unveils new format for 2022, with two groups and seedings

Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings will be on top in Group B

Nagraj Gollapudi25-Feb-2022The 2022 IPL will give its 10 teams seedings and place them in two “virtual” groups during the league phase of the tournament. The seedings are based on the number of times a team has won the IPL or made the finals. Group A will be led by five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who are the top overall seeds, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings, will lead Group B with the No. 2 seeding. The other teams in Group A, in order, are Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. Group B features Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, in that order.ESPNcricinfo LtdUnveiling the new format on Friday, the IPL said in a release that the 10 teams will play a total of 14 matches – seven home and seven away – during the league phase of a season that now stretches to 70 games. Ten of the 14 matches will be home-and-away games against the other four teams in the group, as well as two matches against the team from the corresponding row (organised by the seedings) of the other group. Mumbai, as an example, will play the other four teams in Group A – Knight Riders, Royals, Capitals and Super Giants – and Super Kings from Group B two times each. They will play the remaining teams in the other group once each (for a total of 14 games) – these games will be split home and away. The home-and-away formula will not be relevant this season, though, because the IPL has decided to restrict the league phase to four venues across two cities: Mumbai and Pune. While Mumbai will host the bulk of the matches (55), the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium on the outskirts of Pune will host 15 matches during the league phase.ESPNcricinfo LtdEvery team will play four times each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy, and three times each at Brabourne Stadium and the MCA Stadium. While the IPL will finalise and announce the schedule in early March, it remains to be seen whether Mumbai will get any matches at their home base at the Wankhede.2011 format tweaked
The format is similar to the one used in 2011, when 10 teams featured for the first time. The teams were split into two loose groups, with 70 league matches and four playoff games, and all the teams ranked in one points table. During the league phase, every team played 14 matches. Each team played the other four in their group both home and away (eight matches), four of the teams in the other group once each (four matches, either home or away), and the remaining team in the other group twice, both home and away. A random draw decided the composition of the groups as well as who played whom across the groups once or twice. For 2022, the IPL confirmed that the tournament will be played between March 26 and May 29. It will begin 10 days after India’s home Test series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to end. That means the IPL will not follow the RM Lodha Committee recommendation, which had stated that a two-week gap was mandatory between any international series/tournament India played and the IPL.

Good news for Saka: Arsenal target "criminally underrated" £50m PL star

While it hasn’t been disastrous, it has been a challenging start to the campaign for Arsenal this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have done reasonably well considering the calibre of opposition they have already faced in the Premier League, but injuries are starting to become a serious problem.

The North Londoners were without Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Odegaard against Liverpool, and before the game finished, they also saw Gabriel Magalhães and Jurrien Timber come off.

The small saving grace was that Bukayo Saka seems to be back to full fitness, but given his age, workload and incredible importance to the team, Edu Gaspar and Co must find another right-winger to come in and provide him with competition, which, based on recent reports, might happen next year.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Arsenal are interested in Brentford’s goalscoring dynamo, Bryan Mbeumo.

Brentford'sBryanMbeumocelebrates scoring

Former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur scout Mick Brown told the outlet that the Gunners “have been looking” at the winger and that there is a real “possibility” that they go in for his signature next year, akin to their move for Leandro Trossard in January 2023.

No price is mentioned in the story, but reports from earlier this year have suggested that the Cameroonian international could be available for a fee in the region of £50m, which would make sense due to his contract expiring in under two years.

It wouldn’t be a cheap transfer to get over the line, but given Mbeumo’s impressive form in recent months, it is worth pursuing, especially as it would also help Saka.

Why signing Mbeumo would be great for Saka

So, before looking at Mbeumo’s impressive form in the last couple of seasons, let’s examine the significant reason why his arrival would be excellent news for Saka: rest.

Yes, while fans, and Arteta for that matter, would likely love for the Englishman to play every minute of every game for the next few years, that just isn’t possible, and worse yet, it would almost certainly have a negative impact on his long-term future.

For example, the 23-year-old has already played an incredible 18289 minutes of first-team football, and by the end of his sixth full season, had played more than former wonderkids Michael Owen and Dele Alli played at the same points in their careers, and according to research from the people at OLBG, the Hale Ender could see his career go down a similar path if the manager continues to play him into the ground.

The research in question has concluded, based on the careers of other top stars and when they had to hang up their boots, that there is a chance he has already played around 53% of his projected career minutes, and while it’s obviously not a hard science, it would be foolhardy to believe the 42-capped Englishman would be immune to the eventual burnout that so many other stars have had to contend with.

So, with all of that said, it’s clear that the Gunners need another high-quality right-winger who can not only come in for games in the Englishman’s stead but also consistently push and challenge him throughout future campaigns, which is where the Brentford man comes in.

For example, the “criminally underrated” attacker, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, was sensational for the Bees last season, racking up nine goals and six assists in just 27 appearances, equating to a goal involvement once every 1.8 games.

Moreover, if a campaign like that isn’t enough to convince people, then perhaps the fact he’s already scored eight goals in ten matches this season will be.

Ultimately, if Mbeumo were to join Arsenal next year, he would be doing so knowing that he’d mostly be a backup to Saka.

However, given how well he has played in recent years, there is no reason he couldn’t still play a significant role throughout a full season, and the fact he’d allow the Englishman to play fewer games could be a game-changer for the club in the long run.

Invincibles' faith repaid as Muyeye trends upwards

Zimbabwe-born batter has sights set on higher honours after sparkling in sunshine at The Oval

Matt Roller11-Aug-2025The Hundred’s relentless social-media push for viral moments can make it hard to know where to look across a weekend featuring eight matches, 2,084 runs and 95 wickets. But Tawanda Muyeye’s roar of celebration after Jordan Cox hit the winning runs at a brimming Oval on Saturday afternoon was the culmination of a performance which demanded attention.Muyeye punched the air and shouted in celebration in the south London sunshine, after playing an innings that had been two years in the making. First signed by Oval Invincibles in 2023, he has been backed as a first-choice player this season and his unbeaten 59 off 28 balls to set up a nine-wicket thrashing of Manchester Originals showed precisely why. When Muyeye walked along Cottesloe Beach earlier this year to meet Invincibles coach Tom Moody for coffee, he feared that he was about to be released. He was playing grade cricket in Perth, and knew the retention deadline was imminent. “I was like, ‘Goodness, this could be one of two things: either I’m getting flicked, or he’s going to continue with me,'” Muyeye said.Related

Muyeye, Jacks demolish Originals as Invincibles go two from two

But Moody was clear in his belief that after struggling to find an opening partner for Will Jacks – Jason Roy and Dawid Malan were both inconsistent – it was time to back Muyeye. “We felt that T was ready to play a frontline position,” Moody said. “He’s come along leaps and bounds over the last 12 months, and has been part of our dressing room for some time now.”Muyeye has had a breakout T20 season for Kent – only D’Arcy Short has scored more than his 516 runs in the Blast – and he believes he is a far better player than the one Moody first signed as a wildcard on Matt Walker and Sam Billings’ recommendation: “Every time I’ve come into this group, I’ve improved so much [from] being around a gun group of cricketers.”His innings on Saturday was dominant, part of an opening stand worth 114 in just 49 balls. Jacks appeared determined to break the back of the game inside the powerplay – he slashed his second ball over deep third for six – and Muyeye soon emerged from his slipstream, hitting his first ball for four and then belting another off James Anderson.

“If I keep working hard, we don’t know what can happen in the future. [International cricket] has always been my dream… But I’m just trying to focus on getting better and being the best player possible.”Tawanda Muyeye

“Jacksy just took the attack to them and I was like, ‘Okay, well, I might as well join the party,'” Muyeye said. “It was good. He took the initiative… I don’t play like that without him, so it was a bit of yin and yang. I think our games complement each other pretty well, and we showed it today.”The most impressive feature of Muyeye’s innings was his takedown of Noor Ahmad: he had never previously faced a left-arm wristspinner in a short-form match, but hit five of Noor’s first six balls for four. It was substance to match his undeniable style. “I just saw a few opportunities, and played my strongest shots against him,” Muyeye said.”We talked about one of their threats being Noor, who is one of the most effective wristspinners in the game,” Moody added. “We talked about concentrating on vertical-bat shots through the off side, and he played a couple of great ones: one just past cover, then one lifted over cover-point. Absorbing information is one thing; being able to execute under pressure is another.”For all of Muyeye’s success in the Blast this year, the Hundred is a step up. His innings on Saturday came in front of a soldout crowd at The Oval, in a televised game, and in a tournament with a concentrated talent pool. “For me personally, this is the closest thing to international cricket there is,” he said.!function(){“use strict”;window.addEventListener(“message”,function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[“datawrapper-height”]){var e=document.querySelectorAll(“iframe”);for(var t in a.data[“datawrapper-height”])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data[“datawrapper-height”][t]+”px”;r.style.height=d}}})}();

Muyeye’s path to international honours may not be straightforward. He moved to the UK as an asylum seeker when he was a teenager – his mother felt unsafe at home in Zimbabwe as a supporter of the opposition party – and his winter plans are up in the air: “I need to apply for my leave-to-remain, all that sort of jazz.”But his long-term ambition is to play Test cricket for England, and innings like these can only help his case. “It’s obviously proof that you can do it, and if I keep working hard, then we don’t know what can happen in the future. [International cricket] has always been my dream… But I’m just trying to focus on getting better and being the best player possible.”For Moody, Muyeye’s next task is to prove he can win games consistently. “The Hundred is an opportunity for him to do that, along with his cricket at Kent… If he continues to do that and to evolve like he has done over the last 12 months, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t present himself as an exciting option [for England].”If he can, Muyeye will significantly boost the Invincibles’ bid for a third successive title – and repay Moody’s faith in him. “That clarity [means that] when you go into the summer, you know that all you need to do is get your game in good order, and everything takes care of itself. I’m so blessed that a day like [Saturday] happens at The Oval, my favourite ground. I’m a lucky boy.”
