The 20 ‘most hated’ Premier League footballers of all time

Over the last two decades of Premier League football, the game has seen some popular players grace the sport. The ones who get the biggest cheer every time they take to the field from their own supporters and quite often earn the grudging respect of the opposition fans as well. Unfortunately, since football is a game of overpaid, overhyped children, there are plenty of players that nobody can stand in the slightest.

These are the ones that attract the boos wherever they go and quite often, their own fans can’t even bear the sight of them. Quite often, this unpopularity isn’t down to their playing ability, but their actual personality and for some footballers, those personalities simply aren’t curable. Others players are hated because of their actions on the field, indeed certain individuals go out there to merely wind the opposition up while others just play like morons. This doesn’t make them any better than those with the ugly personalities, indeed more often this draws the attention of the opposition supporters towards them. With this in mind, we bring you the 20 most hated footballers in the history of the Premier League.

Tottenham fans won’t miss Llorente & Sissoko amid potential five-man exodus

According to reports in The Mirror, Tottenham are prepared to listen to transfer offers for as many as five of their first team players.

Who could be on their way out?

The list includes club veteran Mousa Dembélé, back-up striker Fernando Llorente and French international Moussa Sissoko. Even worse for Spurs fans, the report claims that the club are also ready to listen to offers for defensive duo Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose.

Why the shake up?

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has guided the North London club to three consecutive top four finishes -which begs the question – why rock the boat?

If Danny Rose’s explosive interview last summer is anything to go by then it would seem that some in the Spurs dressing room have grown frustrated with club’s wage policy – their wage bill being closer to Burnley’s than Arsenal’s, Spurs’ north London and top four rivals.

Rose said, “I am reaching my peak and have probably only got one big contract left in me.”

Of the five players rumoured to be on the way out, England full back Rose is the youngest at 27. But if he is already thinking about that last “one big contract” then it’s likely his older colleagues are as well.

Would Spurs miss them?

Dembélé has been a good servant since joining in 2012 and the powerhouse midfielder will have options in terms of his next club. The Belgian is a composed presence in the middle of the park but in Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier Spurs have a couple of like-for-like replacements.

However, compatriot Alderweireld would be a loss for the club. Spurs have reportedly been unwilling to match the centre-half’s wage demands, paving the way for the defender to leave the club with the likes of PSG, Chelsea and Man United all rumoured to be interested.

In Pochettino’s treatment of Rose this season – limiting the 2016/17 PFA left-back of the year to just ten Premier League appearances – Spurs have shown that no one player is bigger then the team.

Wales full back Ben Davies was preferred instead of Rose and made 29 Premier League appearances as Spurs consolidated their Champions League status.

Two players that Spurs fans will be glad to see the back of are Llorente and Sissoko. Both players have struggled since making their moves to the club.

In Focus: Tottenham face tough task to keep Alli

According to Diario Gol, Lionel Messi is keen for Barcelona to secure a deal for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli at the end of the current season.

What’s the story?

Suggestions of La Liga interest in Alli is not exactly breaking news, with the Tottenham midfielder believed to be on the wishlist of both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old has struggled to find his best form during stages of this season, but has still managed four goals and seven assists in 19 Premier League appearances.

Alli, who is valued at £54m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has also netted twice and provided three assists in three Champions League appearances this term – demonstrating that he is capable of operating at the top level.

According to Diario Gol, Messi has told Barcelona to bring Alli to Camp Nou at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, and the Spanish league leaders are ready to press ahead with a move.

Can Tottenham realistically keep Alli?

It is worth remembering that Tottenham have been very, very good to Alli.

It was Spurs that handed the midfielder his big break in terms of Premier League football, and they have helped him develop into a key player for the England national team.

Alli is contracted to Tottenham until the summer of 2022, but a move to Barcelona could well see the attacker double his wages.

Alli will also have to decide whether he feels he can win trophies at Tottenham when considering the strength of the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United in the Premier League.

Not many players turn down Barcelona when the Catalan club come calling, and it seems that Alli could end up in Spain sooner rather than later.

A worthy transfer sacrifice for Everton

When the manager merry-go-round displayed its entirety earlier on this summer, it was clear that some transfers between the teams would follow.

David Moyes had been the Premier League’s third longest serving manager at Everton. Yet, he took up the once in a lifetime opportunity to replace Britain’s longest serving manager- Sir Alex Ferguson who was in charge for an incredible 26 years at Old Trafford in a feat unlikely to ever be seen again. When two of the league’s longest serving managers move on from their respective clubs, you have to expect a degree of player upheaval. Exacerbating this was the fact that Roberto Martinez stepped up to the challenge at Everton after several years defying the odds by keeping probably the Premier League’s smallest club Wigan in the top flight.

Cue the speculation over which loyal players would be following their trusted managers in transferring teams between Wigan and Everton, and Everton and Manchester United. Much of the media’s attention focused on two players- in most people’s eyes Everton’s two prized assets. Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines had proved in 2012-2013 that they were a cut above a team jostling for a European squad. Baines’ form had led many to believe he was more worthy of a starting berth for England than a stalwart of the team like Ashley Cole- a high proportion of Everton’s goals came through him or were affected by him bombing down the left side or taking some of the most ferocious set pieces the league saw last season. Yet, in a huge boost to the Toffees, Baines stayed put at Goodison Park. There is no doubt that Manchester United expressed a huge interest in bringing the England man to Old Trafford but Everton displayed the best quality stiff upper lip to avoid selling him.

It was Fellaini who was looking the more likely to move on, and move on he did- in dying embers of the transfer window. In a move that could be indicative of a panic buy, United purchased the 25 year old for around £27 million. Adding to the chaotic nature of the transaction, Fellaini reportedly put in a last minute transfer request to Roberto Martinez to force through a move as well as agreeing to funding £4 million of United’s transfer fee himself. This ensured Everton received above their minimum fee release clause for their midfielder- something which would not have happened had United acted quicker in their pursuit.

Despite the loss of Fellaini, the retention of Baines is arguably an even bigger feat for Martinez and Chairman Bill Kenwright. If you had to ask them who they would rather have sold out of the two, it’s pretty certain they would have given you Fellaini every time. Crucially, Everton put at least some of the transfer fee to good use. Martinezs had already gone back to former club Wigan to sign three players- goalkeeper Joel, defender and former captain Antolin Alcaraz and Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone. All displayed last season that their natural level is probably above that of the Championship. All added depth to the blue side of Merseyside’s squad but their addition can hardly be described as ground breaking.

Everton saved their key business for the last day of the window with good incisiveness in replacing Fellaini. Martinez went back to his regular hunting ground to sign Republic of Ireland man James McCarthy. A younger player than Felllaini with the potential to be as good. Former England man Gareth Barry also headed through the doors. He is keen to re-establish himself in the Three Lions squad for the World Cup in 2014. Again this, adds experience to the ranks at Everton- big game experience. The third acquisition is probably the most impressive. Many people were tipping Romelu Lukaku for a regular spot in the Chelsea team this season, but Jose Mourinho’s decision that he is not ready represents a clear gain for Everton who beat Lukaku’s former loan club West Brom to his signing.

All three give Everton depth that they haven’t really enjoyed for the past few seasons. Often the pundit’s line with Everton has dubbed their starting XI as capable of beating anyone on their day. Yet, a statement that often follows is ‘they’ll have a good season if they get no injuries’. This is because (often due to lack of funding) their squad has an alarming lack of depth. This is not the case this season.

With youngsters like Ross Barkley and Seamus Coleman getting better and better every game, experienced heads like Leon Osman and Sylvain Distin as strong as ever, and new additions like McCarthy, Barry and Lukaku giving Everton a genuinely strong spine, Martinez can be commended for making Everton stronger in the wake of losing one of their star players. Good management has resulted in Everton becoming stronger. No one will surprised if they are up there challenging the elite for a top four finish as the end of the season approaches.

What now for Italian clubs in Europe?

The Champions League draw has been made and for the first time in 13 years only two Italian clubs will compete in the group stages.

Not since the tournament was expanded to 32 teams in 1999, has Serie A had so few representatives in Europe’s elite competition. And after losing its fourth Champions League spot to the Bundesliga, this surely serves as further evidence of Italian football’s on-going decline.

Juventus and AC Milan are the two sides who will be flying the Italian flag, but it would take a real optimist to truly believe either side can really go on and win the trophy. The bookmaker’s odds of 16-1 for Juve and 25-1 for Milan would seem to confirm this.

It’s quite possible that there has never been a season where Serie A clubs go into the Champions League as such outsiders for the title.

Juventus at least are a team which seems to be on the up. The Bianconeri are the reigning Serie A champions and went the entirety of last season unbeaten. What’s more, they have made some intelligent summer signings in Giovinco, Asamoah and Isla.

However, their widely praised manager Antonio Conte is currently serving a ten month ban for alleged involvement with match fixing whilst at former club Siena. Furthermore, Juve’s squad is relatively inexperienced at this level, with only Gigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo having regularly appeared in the competition.

Factor in a tough group that contains Chelsea and Shakhtar Donetsk, and the quarter finals would look like a realistic target. Anything more would be a bonus.

As for AC Milan, the Rossoneri are now a pale imitation of the side which dominated the Champions League between 2003 and 2007.

Key players Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Alessandro Nesta and Antonio Cassano all left the San Siro this summer and leave a huge void for new signings Zapata, De Jong, Montolivo and Pazzini to fill.

On the bright side, Milan have been dealt a decent hand in the group stage. Getting past Zenit St Petersburg, Malaga and Anderlecht won’t be easy, but they should still make it through.

However, if they do make the knockout stage, it’s very hard to image this current Milan side getting the better of the Spanish giants, Manchester clubs or Bayern Munich in a two legged tie.

So with Champions League glory looking unlikely, perhaps the best chance of Italian success in Europe is the Europa League.

Serie A clubs have been little short of awful in this competition in recent years and this is one of the main reasons why the Bundesliga was able to usurp the fourth Champions League spot.

Yet with decent sides like Inter, Napoli, Udinese and Lazio featuring this year, there is no reason why at least one Serie A club can’t go on and make a serious challenge for the trophy.

While Italian clubs have often chosen to overlook the Europa League and focus solely on the domestic front, doing so now would be shooting both themselves and Serie A in the foot.

The Europa League is still a prestigious trophy and winning it would certainly delights the fans. What’s more it could go a long way to getting that precious fourth Champions League spot back and that would be a huge benefit to Italian football as a whole.

Newcastle fans fear Merino will leave

Newcastle fans have been discussing the future of midfielder Mikel Merino, and they’re convinced the Spaniard will leave the club this summer.

When Newcastle signed Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund last summer, fans were hopeful that they had finally found the long-term partner for Jonjo Shelvey.

Shelvey has always been the midfield maestro for the Magpies, but he can’t do everything by himself.

Merino started the season fairly well, but the young Spaniard has been battling a back injury and has struggled for minutes since Christmas.

During his injury absence, Mo Diame suddenly remembered he’s actually quite a good footballer, and has formed the partnership fans have been longing for with Shelvey.

With links to La Liga side Athletic Bilbao heating up and no signs of the youngster getting his place back from Diame, it’s looking more and more likely Merino will leave the club this summer.

While some fans have been unimpressed by his commitment, or lack thereof, others are sympathising with his injury issues, and praying he gets another shot on Tyneside.

Some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…

Five Ligue 1 stars Newcastle should be targeting this summer

The arrival of Steve McClaren at St James’ park looks to have ended Newcastle’s association with scouting and signing players from Ligue 1.

Newcastle have managed to tap into this forgotten market in recent years and capitalised on bargains and lower wages. This is displayed most notably with the acquisitions of Cabaye and Sissoko. The former costing just £3.5million before being sold to Paris Saint-Germain for £18 million.

Having already missed a trick in losing out to West Ham United in their pursuit of Dimitri Payet from Marseille, they can’t afford to miss out on anymore gems.

Taking into account the deficiencies in Newcastle’s squad, with McClaren recently quoted as only wanting players ‘who can improve the first team’.

Newcastle should be taking advantage of their well-used contacts to lure players to the North East.

Here are FIVE players they need to look at from Ligue 1…

[interaction id=“none”]

Clement Grenier – Olympique Lyonnais

This is a link that has refused to go away since Newcastle reportedly made a ‘substantial’ bid in January 2014.

Raised within the profitable Lyon youth system, Grenier is an imposing central midfielder who is very comfortable on the ball, sporting an impressive array of passing whilst unafraid to get shots off at goal having scored 12 goals in 93 appearances at Lyon.

Whilst highly rated, Lyon have developed other midfield talents including Jordan Ferri and Gueida Fofana which limited Grenier’s chances last season. Still only 24, Clement will need game time and would settle at Newcastle with his physique and calm demeanour.

With three years left on his current deal, Newcastle will need to shell out at least £7million for his services. But this could prove to be a snip as he looks to build upon his 5 French caps.

Nicolas N’Koulou – Olympique de Marseille

Nicolas Nkoulou – 05.02.2012 – Marseille / Lyon – 22eme journee de Ligue 1Photo : Manuel Blondeau / Icon Sport

Heavily linked with Monaco’s centre back Abdennour this summer, it is Nicolas N’Koulou that Newcastle should be gunning for. In desperate need of a solid centre back, N’Koulou possesses excellent decision making and a valuable calmness under pressure.

Having showcased these attributes under an erratic Bielsa last term, it is these qualities that Newcastle fans are crying out for after the team was culpable for panicked defending on many occasions last season. With a year remaining on his contract, it is the optimal time to swoop for the 62 capped Cameroonian international.

At 25, Nicolas could be a stalwart for the Magpie’s backline building upon his already impressive 200 top-flight appearances whilst at Monaco and Marseille.

Jordan Ayew – FC Lorient

Thought to be keen to follow his brother Andre to the Premier League, Jordan would relish the fanatic support up at Newcastle.

Everton and Dortmund have registered interest with a deal done with Borussia muted by Lorient officials. Enigmatic, pacey with a flair for the outrageous, he would come with something that’s severely lacking within Newcastle’s current ranks – Fire.

His determination and bite would be fully appreciated at St James’ Park. He could offer options along the front three having scored 12 goals in 26 appearances for Lorient after being given a more central role.

Having a respectable eight goals in 28 caps for Ghana at 23 he could add goals that were glaringly missing for the Toon last season.

Wissam Ben Yedder – Toulouse FC

Here is a must have for Newcastle. Their aforementioned struggle for goals would be a forgotten nightmare if this magician got into his stride.

Having scored 30 goals and assisted a further 10 in his last two league campaigns for provincial club Toulouse, he is as happy creating as he is tapping home from four yards. At just 5”7, he can lead the line effectively but would suit the midfield runs of Colback and newly aquired Wijnaldum down to a tee.

Having been linked with ‘bigger’ clubs over the years, now is the moment to make a bid with just two years left on his contract.

Yoann Gourcuff – Free Agent

Yoann is currently a free agent after being released by Lyon this summer. Likened by many to French legend Zinedine Zidane, pressure was put upon his young shoulders early on.

The weight of expectation has caused an unfortunate injury record with his best spell coming at Bordeaux almost six years ago.

He is looking for another chance to prove himself with more international caps still plausible for the 29 year old stylish attacking midfielder.

With a long line of talented attacking players having strutted their stuff at St James’ Park over the years, it could be a match made in heaven.

Given another chance, he could prove his worth and return to form that gifted Bordeaux 12 goals and 11 assists in 2008/09 Ligue 1 campaign.

Wenger confirms interest in Lyon ace

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that the club are likely to make a bid for Lyon’s Clement Grenier in the summer.

The midfielder came through the ranks at the Stade de Gerland and after a couple of seasons on the fringes of the first team, has now established himself as a regular in Remi Garde’s line-up.

His form has drawn comparisons with Lyon legend Juninho but with chairman Jean Michel-Aulas recently admitting that he could sell a number of the club’s players to help balance the books, it now looks likely that he will leave in the summer.

Arsenal are apparently winning the race to secure his signature and Wenger admits they are interested in him, comparing the 22-year-old to a young Samir Nasri.

“We are following him,” he told Telefoot. “His intelligence of play pleases me. He has interesting qualities. He reminds me of Nasri.”

Marsh available to bowl, Maxwell backs him to find batting form

The Australia captain has not had the ball since the IPL but could feature during the Super Eight stage if conditions require it

Andrew McGlashan19-Jun-20241:33

Maxwell: Marsh has been ‘unbelievable’

Mitchell Marsh has declared himself ready to bowl in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 to hand Australia another option ahead of their game against Bangladesh in Antigua, while Glenn Maxwell believes the captain is close to making a big impact with the bat.Marsh has not bowled since leaving the IPL with a hamstring injury and a cautious approach has been taken to his return with the initial rehab requiring a little longer than expected.”I’ll be available to bowl,” he said. “With the line-up that we’ve got, I don’t really necessarily see a need for me to bowl, but I think it’s really important in this format to have options and we’re blessed with plenty of those.”Related

  • Head: Anything possible in the last seven or eight overs

  • Tim David 'working really hard' on his legspin

Australia have not been found short due to Marsh being held back from bowling duties with Marcus Stoinis playing an important role, while against Scotland they used 12 overs of spin with an eye on potential conditions in the Super Eight.Marsh having a role with the ball would become a more likely scenario if Australia fielded Ashton Agar as a second frontline spinner again then decided they needed some extra overs of seam.”Physically feel good,” Marsh said. “It’s always nice to have a bit of break from bowling and I often joke about that. But Stoin and I often talk about it as allrounders, we love being in the game.”Mitchell Marsh hasn’t quite hit his stride with the bat since returning from injury•ICC/Getty Images

Marsh wouldn’t divulge whether Australia will return to three specialist quicks against Bangladesh or retain the balance of attack they used against Scotland. The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium has not offered huge assistance for the spinners so far – the numbers at the venue are skewed somewhat by four-wicket hauls for Adam Zampa and Adil Rashid against Oman and Namibia – but Australia are on alert for sharply-spinning conditions in St Vincent where they face Afghanistan.Should Australia bring both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood back into their XI after they were rested against Scotland then Maxwell can take on the role of the second spinner.Marsh and Maxwell are the two parts of Australia’s batting order that have yet to fire at the World Cup with 63 runs between them in seven innings, but Maxwell was confident he and the captain were close to making a big impact.”For me and Mitch, we got a lot of confidence out of that England game for the role we played,” Maxwell told ESPN’s . “Even though it’s a small sample size we still feel like we played out role; we set the innings up for the lower order to then go nuts. The opening batters going out and scoring at 12, 13 an over can be bit misleading to how conditions are and if we try to go at that rate for the rest of the innings thinking that’s what it’s like we could throw our wickets away.”Mitch has been unbelievable over the last couple of years, since he’s come back into all three formats, especially the Test stuff, [and] I think that’s probably filtered into the confidence in the other two formats. Watching him go about his work, you always know he’s only one or two shots away from basically ruining a game and we are looking forward to seeing that.”On his own form, which stems back to a poor IPL, Maxwell said: “Still feeling really good. I’ve been hitting the ball pretty well, but…it’s just been really hard to, I suppose, get that rhythm and momentum. You’ve seen our openers go out there and pump it all over the place then in the middle order it’s been quite difficult to adjust.”The only one throughout the tournament who has consistently smashing them is Stoin – he’s been outstanding. To have those guys below me gives me a lot of confidence and actually knowing I have a bit of time to get myself into the tournament and we’ve got some real quality below us. It’s a nice position to be in that I don’t feel like I’ve fully hit my straps, played pretty well against England…but I know it’s not far away.”

Steven Smith to captain Australia in ODI series against India

While Cummins remains at home, Warner and Ashton Agar are back in India for the ODIs starting Friday

Andrew McGlashan14-Mar-2023Steven Smith will captain Australia in the ODI series against India with Pat Cummins remaining at home following the death of his mother Maria last week.Cummins left the tour after the second Test in Delhi with Smith taking over as Australia clawed the scoreline back to 2-1.”Our thoughts are with Pat and his family as they go through that grieving process,” head coach Andrew McDonald said.Related

  • Australia's WTC final squad – Will David Warner keep his place?

  • Jhye Richardson out of ODI tour of India

  • Maxwell and Marsh return for India ODIs

  • Warner out of final two Tests due to elbow fracture

Cummins won’t be replaced in the squad which leaves Australia with 15 players to choose from in the three-match series which begins in Mumbai on Friday. Nathan Ellis was previously called up as a replacement for Jhye Richardson who suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury. With Smith taking charge of the side it means Australia will have had four captains in their last five ODIs. Aaron Finch retired after the series against New Zealand in September with Cummins named as his successor. However, when he was rested for the second match of the series against England in November, Josh Hazlewood took the role.Hazlewood was not an option on this occasion due to the Achilles injury which forced him home from the Test series. Smith has previously captained Australia in 51 ODIs.Aside from the absent quick bowlers, Australia have selected their full-strength ODI squad for this series with an eye on firming up plans for the World Cup in India during October and November. They have more ODIs against South Africa in August before needing to select their World Cup squad. This is an allrounder-heavy squad, even more so now with them not replacing Cummins, and Australia will continue to explore how they can balance the side with them. On a number of occasions last year they fielded very deep batting orders with either Cameron Green or Glenn Maxwell at No. 8.”We’ve got a couple conversations around the balance of the team we want to play,” McDonald said “We’ve gone in with a structure with eight batters to bat a little bit deeper, we’ve tried that. So there’ll be a mix of combinations as we lead into the World Cup. A lot of allrounders [have been] picked in the squad and they can all play in the one team. So we’ve got to answer a few of those questions.”Maxwell is returning from the badly-broken leg he suffered last November although it’s uncertain whether he will play all three games with a cautious approach likely to be taken.David Warner is fit again after the fractured elbow which forced him home from the Test series after Delhi while Mitchell Marsh is in line to return from the ankle surgery which disrupted his home season following the T20 World Cup.Ashton Agar is also back in India after a rapid fall down the pecking order among the Test spinners. He took 5 for 64 for Western Australia in the recent Marsh Cup final.Australia ODI squad vs India David Warner, Travis Head, Steven Smith (capt), Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa
