Luka Jovic is Serbia's saviour! Real Madrid flop's last-second heroics keep Euro 2024 hopes alive as sorry Slovenia throw it away

Slovenia started the brighter of the two sides, with Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic making a smart stop to deny Jan Mlakar's low drive. Timi Elsnik then rattled the post after a mazy run, and then Benjamin Sesko failed to bury the follow-up. Aleksandar Mitrovic nearly gave Serbia the perfect start after the break, following a neat one-two with Dusan Tadic but Jan Oblak did well to keep out his strike.

Slovenia finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute as Zan Karnicnik finished off the move he started in his own half by converting Elsnik's ball across the six-yard box. Serbia nearly equalised instantly through Mitrovic but Karnicnik got the slightest of touches as the Al-Hilal star's first-time strike hit the bar. Dragan Stojkovic's side pushed hard for an equaliser and with virtually the last kick of the game, Jovic grabbed a remarkable 95th-minute equaliser at Allianz Arena.

Luka Jovic: The former Real Madrid man was only brought on in the 92nd minute of the game but came up with a priceless goal to rescue his side. Karnicnik was superb for Slovenia, scoring his side's goal and being strong at the back but Jovic stole the show with a stunning cameo.

THE BIG LOSER

Dusan Vlahovic: While star strikers Mitrovic and Sesko were fairly quiet for their respective sides, the Juventus man was, arguably, the biggest disappointment of all. He was very ineffective, looked anonymous, and was hooked just after the hour mark.

Alex Davies' unbeaten ton puts up much-needed resistance for Lancashire against Northamptonshire

Davies’ 124 not out glued together the visitors’ reply to 442 as they closed day two at 211 for 4

ECB Reporters Network08-Jul-2019Alex Davies made his first century of the season to provide some much-needed resistance for Lancashire on the second afternoon at Wantage Road. Davies’ 124 not out glued together the visitors’ reply to Northamptonshire’s 442 as they closed day two 211 for 4.Davies’ season has been badly interrupted by a finger injury picked up while keeping wicket in the opening match of the season at Middlesex. This is his fifth match of the summer but he immediately looked in good touch and went on to make a fifth first-class hundred. It was a vital innings with Lancashire forced to battle back after conceding by far their highest total of the summer. That pressure only increased when the Red Rose slipped to 2 for 2 in the fifth over of the reply but Davies found his touch with a smart cover drive against Brett Hutton and then tucked into some loose bowling from Nathan Buck, cutting merrily for several of his 10 fours as he passed fifty in only 59 deliveries.Luke Procter regained control and created a sharp chance from Davies, on 70, who miscued a straight drive back to the bowler but the ball burst through his hands above his head. After tea, Davies was quick to capitalise on anything slightly wide from Rob Keogh’s off-spin and it was a cut stroke against Keogh, his 17th boundary, that brought him a century in 151 balls. For much of the afternoon, Davies had Rob Jones for company. Jones never settled as well and played and missed regularly and was also dropped, on 27, gloving a hook against Procter that Adam Rossington couldn’t gather behind the wicket leaping above his head.Jones did not want Keogh to settle at the start of his spell but in the off-spinner’s second over, advanced down the wicket and dragged a lofted drive to mid-on where Procter dived to his right to take a fine catch. It ended a stand of 127 for the third wicket.Josh Bohannon edged Keogh to first slip soon after as Lancashire slipped to 131 for 4 but Steven Croft arrived to calmly steer his side to the close, unbeaten on 38 in a stand of 80 for the fifth wicket with Davies.Lancashire were plunged into deep trouble at the start of their reply, losing two wickets in the opening five overs. Keaton Jennings edged Ben Sanderson to second slip for a nine-ball duck before Haseeb Hameed fell for an eight-ball naught, dragging Sanderson into his leg stump. It continued an excellent opening period of the day for the home side who took their overnight 334 for 5 to 442 – despite slipping to 352 for 8 – with Procter making 48 not out against his old county as Lancashire missed out on maximum bowling points for the first time in 2019.

Copeland's haul lifts New South Wales pursuit of final berth

A vital final day awaits for New South Wales after they managed to break through Tasmania’s promising start

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Mar-2019New South Wales’ pacemen bared their teeth to grant the visitors a chance to press for outright victory and a place in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria with one day of the match against Tasmania remaining. At 2 for 145 on the third morning with Alex Doolan and Matthew Wade well entrenched, it appeared that the Tigers would take some serious dislodging with more than half of the game’s available playing time elapsed while Western Australia, the other team with a chance of the final, were making good progress against Queensland. However, the ever reliable Trent Copeland was able to find a way through Doolan’s defences to open up one end, and when the Blues captain Moises Henriques teased a catch out of Wade, the game had turned.Wicketkeeping debutant Baxter Holt then enjoyed a passage replete with action, snaffling five catches in quick time including two in as many balls twice from Copeland and then Harry Conway. Ben McDermott, lacking support, was last out for 53.In seeking a lead the Blues did not have it all their own way, tied down by the new ball and then losing two wickets in three balls, the second of them the captain Kurtis Patterson, to the swing and seam of Gabe Bell. Henriques was able to reclaim some momentum, leaving the Blues in control of their destiny.

Davies continues to toy with a move to Spain with Real Madrid, and as such, the Bavarians have begun looking for potential replacements this summer. As per Sky Germany, one of the names at the top of the list is Hernandez and the German giants have begun talks with the Rossoneri but are yet to start negotiations. As per the report, Hernandez could cost the Germans upwards of €60 million (£51.8m/$64.7m).

The report states that keeping Davies at the club is still the preferred option of the Bayern hierarchy and they will only undergo talks for Hernandez if they are certain the Canadian is looking to leave. Davies' contract is set to run out in the summer of 2025 and Bayern have placed a new deal on the table for the 23-year-old. If he does not renew terms, Bayern will try to push the left-back out this season so as to not lose the Canadian for free next summer.

Smith returns to commercial fold wth BBL ad campaign

Australia’s former captain Steven Smith has become the first member of the trio of players suspended over the Newlands ball-tampering scandal to leverage his disgrace and redemption narrative for commercial reasons, appearing in an advertisement aired during Wednesday night’s Big Bash League opener in Brisbane.Featuring in a campaign for the telecommunications company Vodafone, a sponsor of the Adelaide Strikers who defeated the Brisbane Heat in the opening game, Smith is seen intercut with footage from his tearful Sydney press conference upon his return home from South Africa, where he was stripped of the captaincy and banned from playing for a year by Cricket Australia. The commercial also stages a re-enactment of school visits Smith undertook during the year as part of his CA-imposed community service, while he is heard in voiceover talking about how low things got for him. “I was in a pretty dark space. It made me realise what other people go through and what they need to get through those difficult times,” Smith is heard saying.”It was just about being upfront and honest and taking responsibility. It’s nice to be back at the [Sunderland] club, I just love being in a contest. It’s just you versus the bowler.”I’ve certainly had some difficult days. But it’s OK to be vulnerable. Everyone makes mistakes; it’s about the way you respond to it that’s really important. I want to come back better than I was.”ALSO READ: Smith, Warner need time to reintegrate into ‘dysfunctional family’ – LangerESPNcricinfo understands that Smith was not paid by Vodafone for the appearance, but it is an exercise in testing his connection with the public and potential customers of commercial entities who would wish to use him as a selling point in the future. Smith and Warner are banned until the end of March 2019, while Bancroft’s suspension concludes in late December – he is likely to return to the field for the Perth Scorchers in their BBL fixture against Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston on December 30.Smith, Warner, Bancroft and CA all paid heavy financial and commercial penalties for the Newlands scandal and the players’ subsequent bans. Magellan cancelled its three-year contract with CA as a naming rights sponsor to the home Tests, while Asics (Warner and Bancroft), LG Australia, Toyota (Warner), and Commonwealth Bank and Sanitarium (Smith) all cancelled personal sponsorship deals. At the same time, Smith and Warner had their IPL contracts cancelled, while Bancroft was also denied a previously arranged stint in English county cricket.Intriguingly, Smith’s agreement with Vodafone may have been more complicated had he still been under contract to CA. Following this year’s A$1.18 billion broadcast deal with Foxtel and Seven, the former company had asked to be defined as a telecommunications provider, meaning they would prefer that the governing body not enter into another sponsorship in that area of the market. Three, Vodafone and Optus have all been CA partners in the past.

3 dream players Southampton could sign in January including 11 goal striker

After losing four Championship matches on the spin out of five games played in October, Russell Martin's hopes of securing promotion straight back to the Premier League as Southampton manager were looking slim with the 37-year-old even worrying about his position a matter of months into his new post.

It's turned around since that sticky patch of form thankfully for the Saints and Martin in the dug-out, the South Coast side actually haven't lost since that run of losses with four wins from their last five second-tier matches seeing the team climb to fourth in the league standings.

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Martin will still want to add new faces to his Saints group this January to help his side in the crunch months to come in their pursuit to clinch promotion, bolstering his team to potentially battle with Leicester City and Ipswich Town currently occupying the coveted top two spots.

Here are three dream signings that could come through the door at St Mary's this January…

1 Maximilian Entrup

Southampton are rumoured to be in for Entrup when the transfer window re-opens, the 26-year-old forward lighting up the Austrian Bundesliga with his displays for TSV Hartbeg this season which has seen him attract interest.

The current TSV Hartberg attacker has 11 goals from as many games in all competitions so far, leading to the prolific 6 foot 1 attacker even being called up to the Austria national team ranks.

Southampton could well be looking at Entrup also as a viable option to bring in to bolster an attack that could be weakened if Che Adams moves on from the Saints, adding in another clinical sharpshooter to the group to go toe-to-toe with top scorer Adam Armstrong.

Hartberg's number 11 displayed an unerring coolness in front of goal in an encounter versus Wolfsberger AC recently, only needing four shots in total to score a brace in a convincing 3-0 win as per Sofascore.

Entrup's rich goalscoring form should see him clinch a big move away soon, with Southampton one location he could potentially call home next away from Austria.

2 Nathan Wood

Nathan Wood plays int he Championship for Swansea City against Bristol City.

Martin could go back to his former side and raid a player from the Swansea City squad this January, with a deal for Nathan Wood potentially back on – the Swans defender previously rumoured to rejoin his old manager in a switch to Southampton this summer, a bid of £10 million eventually waved away.

The 21-year-old defender would offer Southampton another mobile presence at the back alongside Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Swansea's number 23 perfect for Martin's philosophy at St Mary's as a defender who can competently pass out from the back.

Under new Swans manager Michael Duff this season, Wood has amassed 53.4 accurate passes out from the back per game as sourced by Sofascore.

Further, Wood even has a goal next to his name this campaign alongside his other defensive contributions – bundling the ball over the line versus West Brom, a consolation strike on the day unfortunately in a 3-2 loss.

Martin might well want a fresh face in at centre-back to rival Saints captain Jack Stephens and first-team stalwart Jan Bednarek, Wood a possible shout to add to his group.

3 Ben Johnson

West Ham United defender Ben Johnson.

A move for Johnson this January would see Southampton go back in for another deal they failed to get over the line before, Martin interested in bringing Johnson to St Mary's this summer but a move never materialised.

It's a deal that would suit all parties involved, the 23-year-old completely un-used under David Moyes this season in the Premier League with West Ham's number two often having to settle for a place on the bench.

Southampton would also benefit from the proposed deal as it would give the Saints another player to rely upon at left-back or even centre-back where Johnson can also play, the South Coast side light on left-back numbers with Ryan Manning the only player fit in the squad currently who can be deployed there.

Adding in a fresh figure would give Manning some competition, on top of just alleviating Martin's stresses when it comes to team selections if his Irish defender was ruled to be unfit for action.

Sarfraz backs Fakhar in Arthur's evolutionary plan

In a phase where Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf were pulled into Test cricket, Fakhar Zaman’s entry is an exciting prospect for a team that normally takes two days to make a play

Osman Samiuddin in Abu Dhabi15-Oct-2018From the day he took over as coach, Mickey Arthur has been itching to transform Pakistan from what they were under Misbah-ul-Haq to something altogether more attacking. Let’s be generous and call it an evolution rather than a transformation, kind of like how England went from the grim attrition of Nasser Hussain to the colourful bloom of Michael Vaughan. He went some way to that end by including not just Shadab Khan but also Faheem Ashraf in the Test side this summer in Ireland and England. Young, multi-skilled attacking players, PSL graduates free of the fears of an older albeit cohesive Test core, and the results were instant and impressive. The third player he was desperately finding a way to fit in was Fakhar Zaman, maybe not as an opener in England, but somewhere in that middle order. Another PSL star, another young player precisely in the mould he wants. Conditions and circumstances mean neither of Shadab or Faheem play tomorrow but Arthur does finally get to throw Fakhar into the Test XI.However well or not he does, you won’t want to miss it. Pakistan’s opening pair may not have a settled identity but in the UAE that has not meant that it is not successful: the first wicket averages 47.35.Fakhar, though, brings another dimension, an element of urgency that Pakistan’s opening pairs haven’t had since perhaps as long ago as Saeed Anwar (not counting Shahid Afridi’s occasional stints). It threatens to upturn what has been a successful formula for years: start steady, keep wickets in hand, build on it, tighten the screws a bit more and boom, we’re late into day two and the game is beginning to roll. Fakhar is not naturally wired to do steady.”One of the reasons is exactly this, to get someone who can play aggressively and score at a brisk pace,” Sarfraz Ahmed said. “You need someone like that in a team. Teams around the world do that.”Pakistan hovered around that three runs per over rate in both innings in Dubai, though the 2.93 in a first innings that lasted 164.2 overs could’ve done with a bump. “If you’re talking about the run-rate,” Sarfraz said, “then in the first Test’s two sessions we scored 200 runs. We lost two quick wickets after that and then we had to focus on rebuilding the innings.”We hope that the batsmen target at least three runs per over once they get set. That is the requirement these days and if you don’t play to that you fall behind in the Test by a day.”The days since the Dubai Test have been filled with talk of a rift between Sarfraz and Arthur, which the former emphatically dismissed. There was a divergence in plans on the final morning (when Sarfraz didn’t bring Mohammad Abbas on for 15 overs despite Abbas opening with Yasir Shan being the pre-play plan) and there was an honest meeting between the pair in between the Tests, but a rift this isn’t. Different wavelengths every now and again but not a rift – at least not yet.The pressure will begin to build very quickly however, especially if Pakistan don’t win this series. They’ve already gone four Tests without a win in the UAE, a veritable fortress for so long. Three Tests against New Zealand will not be easy, especially if results in the preceding limited overs games don’t go well.Sarfraz is drawing hope from the fact that Pakistan dominated four days of the first Test and never looked in any danger of losing. An appeal here, a review there and they might have won it and things would not be looking like they are right now.”There is no pressure after the draw, not as a team or as a captain. We have played well and were unfortunate that the wicket didn’t fall and we didn’t win the Test.”As a team and as a captain I’m very confident for this Test. I’m happy with the way the team responded in the first Test. For four and a half days everything was going fine but unfortunately we couldn’t win the match. Credit goes to Australia they fought really hard but the way we fought in the first Test I’m proud of the team.”

A expulsão tirou o Flamengo do jogo.

Antes, Filipe Luís, Gerson e Pedro haviam cobrado e feito as penalidades.
