West Ham United reportedly have their eyes on a "very" Man City-style player heading into the January transfer window.
West Ham's dip in form
David Moyes is under a bit of pressure heading into the new year, despite guiding West Ham to their first major trophy since 1980 back in May. The club's Europa Conference League title, courtesy of a dramatic late winner by star winger Jarrod Bowen, saw supporters line London's streets by the thousands to celebrate a fantastic achievement.
Cup competitions have been West Ham's forte this year, as they also now gear up for an EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Liverpool next month. However, in terms of league placement, their form leaves a lot to be desired.
West Ham United manager David Moyes.
Three Premier League losses on the bounce have resulted in West Ham sliding down the table, and after they battle relegation last season, there are reports of uncertainty surrounding Moyes' future in 2024.
The Scotsman is out of contract as things stand and media sources believe that it is "unlikely" Moyes will stay at West Ham beyond that point. In the meantime, though, maybe a solution to West Ham's domestic form can be found in the January transfer window.
West Ham transfer targets – January
It's been reported that a new striker is on the cards, with Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy and Bayer Leverkusen's Adam Hlozek among the rumoured West Ham targets for January.
As well as a new forward, reports in the last month suggest that the Hammers could go for a new centre-back. Indeed, Man United defender Harry Maguire is a possible signing for West Ham in this regard (Football Insider).

Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson's futures at the London Stadium are also shrouded in doubt given their deals expire at the end of this season, meaning West Ham may need to consider signing a new left-back.
West Ham now targeting Quentin Merlin
According to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, as shared by the West Ham Way, Moyes is now interested in FC Nantes defender Quentin Merlin. The 21-year-old has been crucial to Nantes' success in recent years, prompting the Ligue 1 side to tie him down with a new deal which runs till 2026.
This hasn't deterred West Ham, though, who are apparently really keen on Merlin amid reported interest from other top clubs like Man City, Bayern Munich and Paris-Saint Germain.

According to WhoScored, the full-back is a mainstay for Nantes, having started all 11 of their French top flight matches this season while ranking among their best for key passes made per 90 in the final third.
The youngster has also been called a "very City-style player" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, an expert on Europe's most head-turning talents to watch out for.

He's also been tipped for France national team selection in the near future, and going by Merlin's brilliant form at Nantes, it won't be long until Didier Deschamps is regularly starting the player.

Chelsea have been at the centre of everyone's attention during the transfer windows since Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge. And things don't look set to change anytime soon on that front, either, with the rumours already starting regarding the Blues, who have won just three of their first eight Premier League games this season.
The London club have started finding their feet under Mauricio Pochettino, though, with convincing wins over Fulham and Burnley highlighting that Chelsea are beginning to turn a vital corner under the Argentine. The former Tottenham Hotspur boss could yet be boosted by reinforcements next summer, too, which could include one particular Bundesliga star.
What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?
Chelsea's summer signings saw their spending in the window reach a reported €462m (£398m), in what is a sensational amount for a side who have got off to such a slow start this season. Only time will tell whether the arrivals of the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Moises Caicedo, and Cole Palmer help the Blues back into the Champions League, and back to winning silverware, but for now, their focus off the pitch seemingly remains on arrivals.
The latest Dani Olmo transfer news has seen reports claiming that Chelsea are among the clubs that want to secure the midfielder's signature. According to reports, via Sport Witness, the Blues, as well as Arsenal, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona are eyeing a move for the RB Leipzig star, who has a €60m (£52m) release clause.
Chelsea have more than proved their ability to spend big in the past, making their interest in Olmo all the more interesting. With plenty of competition for his signature, and the midfielder reportedly keen not to close any doors, next summer will certainly be an interesting one.
When it comes to Olmo's goals and assists, to say that he has got off to a flying start in the Bundesliga this season would be an incredible understatement. The Spaniard has scored two goals in three games, and five in four games in all competitions, for an average of one goal every 68 minutes. When considering that this comes from midfield, too, Olmo becomes all the more impressive.
He has earned plenty of praise in the past for his performances, including from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who said, via Bleacher Report: "He's a top player—he has a bright future, of course.
"His performance today shows it. About the transfer and the money he deserves, that is not the point. The point is he is an incredible player and I am pretty sure he is able to play in the strong leagues in Europe. Hopefully if Dinamo wants and he wants, it can happen."
When compared to current Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, Olmo's stats once again stand out. According to FBref, the Leipzig man has made more progressive passes per 90, more progressive carries per 90, scored more goals, and completed more take-ons per 90. Everything is pointing towards a potential upgrade for the Blues if they pursue a deal next summer.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly planning to convince one "remarkable" player to join him in the north London.
Who have Arsenal signed 2023?
Arteta's side, in their bid to challenge for the Premier League title once again, put pen to paper on deals for club-record signing Declan Rice, versatile Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber, forward Kai Havertz and goalkeeper David Raya for a total of around £200 million or more.
Going the other way, Arsenal shipped out Folarin Balogun, Granit Xhaka, Matt Turner, Auston Trusty, Pablo Mari, Kieran Tierney, Rob Holding, Nuno Tavares, Marquinhos, Nicolas Pepe, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Albert Sambi Lokonga on either loan or permanent deals.
These acquisitions have proved fruitful so far, even if Havertz has been subject to fierce criticism and Timber is out for most of the campaign with an ACL injury. Raya has gone on to usurp long-reigning number one goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale between Arteta's sticks, while Rice is slowly but surely justifying his mammoth £105 million price tag.
The Gunners are unbeaten over their first six league games, winning four of them, and next take on Bournemouth today as they seek to keep chase with the division's heavy-hitters.
What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?
Regardless of their lavish spending over the summer, it has been reported that Arsenal have one eye on January, and one player they've been heavily, heavily linked with is Brentford star Ivan Toney. The England striker, who is currently serving a ban till mid-January for alleged gambling breaches, is subject to intense interest across the Premier League.
Chelsea and Tottenham have been named as other suitors for Toney after his brilliant 20-goal league haul last season, form which resulted in high praise from his manager Thomas Frank.
“Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects,” Frank said earlier this year.
“The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member."
The 27-year-old is said to be a personal favourite of Arteta's, according to reporter John Cross of The Daily Mirror, who has an update on Toney's potential move to the Emirates Stadium. According to his information, Arsenal's manager is personally planning to "convince" Toney to join Arsenal by making him a priority target.
Arteta will apparently be hopeful this can sway him to their part of north London over fellow interested sides (Chelsea and Spurs named again), but Arsenal may have to sell players first. Brentford will demand a minimum of £60 million for Toney, a figure which the Gunners could be wary of given Financial Fair Play. Any proposed makeweights will be a struggle to find, according to Cross, as options like Eddie Nketiah and Emile Smith Rowe are both committed to making it at Arsenal.
Nevertheless, Arteta has a plan to tempt Toney, and it's by showing making the striker Arsenal's "outstanding choice" in the winter.
Arsenal have started the new Premier League campaign in similarly blistering fashion as they did the last, as Mikel Arteta is seeking to mount yet another title charge, but actually see it through until the end this time.
His summer additions are expected to provide the edge needed to topple Manchester City, with their win last weekend proving that the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and David Raya are already making their mark and offering the step-up needed.
However, to fund such a summer of free-spending, there unsurprisingly had to be a few casualties.
It always felt like Edu and his Spanish manager were building towards a window of such magnitude, having seen big-earners like Mesut Ozil, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette all banished for the betterment of the team.
Arsenal managerMikelArteta
After all, shattering the club's previous record transfer by bringing in the former West Ham United captain marked a monster transfer, and one which needed some alternative deals to offset the £105m expended.
Unfortunately, there are no better sales to be made than from the academy, marking pure profit as they go down on the books as created for free. As such, the widespread interest in Folarin Balogun proved too good to be true, and having arrived at the perfect time to cash in.
Why did Arsenal sell Folarin Balogun?
Whilst the desperation for funds likely played a big role in sanctioning the of their promising 22-year-old marksman, given the £35m they would eventually recoup marked a huge fee for someone who had only made ten senior appearances for the Gunners, there were naturally other factors that fed into the deal.
Having enjoyed a blistering loan spell with Stade Reims, where he scored 21 goals across 37 Ligue 1 showings, the young American had truly put himself on the map.
His manager during that period, Will Still, would unsurprisingly rush to praise the man who was spearheading his unlikely push for Europe: "He’s unbelievable, he has real talent but he is also just a top person. He’s trying to learn the language – we have a bit of banter because his French is terrible (but) I think he realises: being good here will allow him to get the spotlight and attention he needs."
Stade Reims' former loan striker Folarin Balogun.
Having now moved permanently, his language learning will certainly have to improve, as he seeks to maintain that newfound spotlight by continuing his fine form.
So, upon returning to the Emirates, he was bound to want more play time, which was a concern he has voiced since leaving: "Football is a competitive sport, and of course, the manager sometimes makes choices: sometimes there are opportunities for some players, and sometimes it’s a bit difficult. I wanted to play, I wanted to prove to people that I can compete at this level."
"I think the decision was natural, but I wouldn’t say there is any regret. As a young player, I want to play".
Clearly, with Gabriel Jesus returning from injury and Eddie Nketiah viewed as a solid backup, a starting first-team spot was massively unlikely. Whilst the sale was hardly received well, as few fans enjoy seeing academy stars offloaded, it was one which Arteta sought to justify: "We didn’t have space for him in the squad to give him the minutes that he needs.
"He was doing well last year in his loan period. He’s evolving the right way and wanted the chance to continue developing his career. He’s going to a really good club that has huge experience of developing talent, as everybody knows. So I’m really happy for him as well."
How is Folarin Balogun playing?
Since making last season's loan permanent, Balogun has shown little signs of slowing down. Even if Arteta's men may be flying too, as they sit top of the Premier League alongside rivals Tottenham Hotspur, they would certainly benefit from the exploits of the youngster, especially given the mini injury crisis suffered recently.
Seeing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli both absent from the starting XI in that aforementioned win over Pep Guardiola's outfit, a new setup had to be enforced which saw Jesus pushed out to the left wing, with Nketiah through the middle.
Whilst the former is a passable option, the latter cannot be trusted to lead the line for an extended period of time, with former Gunners defender Gael Clichy supporting such a notion: "Arsenal need a backup for Jesus, someone young who can push him to score more goals.
"Eddie Nketiah has scored some big and important goals for Arsenal, but he's not as good as Gabriel Jesus. Nketiah has proved he can be a difference-maker, but I don’t know if he's a player who can take Arsenal to the title. That's why I think Mikel Arteta should bring a top backup striker to compete with Jesus."
Unfortunately, they already had one in Balogun, who has managed to post three goals and one assist in five Ligue 1 games, boasting a conversion rate of 23%.
How good is Gabriel Jesus?
This kind of form even puts Arsenal's Brazilian forward to shame, who despite having been deployed out of position on occasion, remains nowhere near as proficient as the four-cap international.
After all, whilst the former City star may have endured an injury-hit term last year, he was also largely very profligate, having scored 11 in the league from an expected goals of 14.16.

It seems that this campaign will be no different, as he only has one goal in the Premier League after six games. Given how the former City man started last season, recording nine goal contributions in his opening 11 league games, he faces an uphill battle to finish on an admirable tally.
Enduring such a low-scoring run of form unsurprisingly has seen his goal conversion rate drop to a lowly 14%, nowhere near that of Balogun's. Perhaps, had Arteta not been so quick to offload the forward, he might have provided some real competition for Jesus, and actually usurped him for a period had such profligacy continued.
Although the funds they received marked a massive sum, coming at an incredibly useful time, in the long run it could actually prove to be a thoughtless move that might have set them back in the striker department.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made some questionable signings over the years, with some talents proving to be big hits, and others being quickly forgettable.
This summer sparked change to the familiar squad at Molineux, with players needing to be offloaded and sold in order to balance the books with reference to the Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions in place.
Players such as club captain Ruben Neves and last summer’s blockbuster signing Matheus Nunes were sold to generate funds during the break, with the two sales accumulating £100m – £47m and £53m respectively.
While it was pivotal that business was efficient during the break due to tight financial pressures, transfers haven’t always been as smart for Wolves, as visible in the current members of the squad. Goncalo Guedes is one of the primary examples.
How much did Wolves sign Goncalo Guedes for?
Signed last summer from Valencia, winger Guedes made the £27.5m move to Molineux to join a host of Portuguese talent already in the Midlands.
At the time of his arrival, chairman Jeff Shi described the player as being “well suited to the Premier League”, insisting that the club had “been patient” to ensure they got the “right player."
Just over a year down the line and the 26-year-old has made only 18 appearances for the Old Gold, scoring on two occasions during his time associated with the club so far. It's safe to say that Fosun and Co picked the wrong player here.
What happened to Goncalo Guedes?
Earning £90k-per-week, Shi’s claims that the winger was ready to play in the Premier League proved to be false, with the former La Liga forward wasting his time at Wolves away.
Signed in August 2022, Guedes was shipped on loan to Benfica by January, and is yet to make another appearance for the side with his future looking to be far away from Molineux.
Former manager Julen Lopetegui explained that the £27.5m man was “not happy” at Wolves after his loan move to the Eagles, as he returned to the Lisbon-based club this summer on a season-long loan spell.
After just 18 appearances, it would be assumed that the attacker’s time is over in the Premier League, with him failing to adapt and wanting away from England as he continues to seek sanctuary in Portugal.
Journalist Nathan Judah didn’t hold back on his opinion of the winger, saying he has “zero interest in rotten apples” following his second loan move to Benfica last month.
Gonçalo-guedes-wolves
While the disappointment of the transfer is understandable considering the price paid to obtain his services just a year ago, the 26-year-old was poor in Portugal, scoring just once in the league during his half-season loan with the Eagles.
Wolves have dodged a bullet by loaning the dud, however considering their recent financial problems, the money spent to sign the want-away has proven to be a complete waste of funds.
It’s likely that the Old Gold will permanently offload the forward in the near future as Gary O’Neil continues to build his favoured squad, although his dip in form will be damaging to the Midlands side, who are unlikely to make a profit in the instance of his sale.
As per CIES Football Observatory, the Portuguese international is valued at €20m (£17m), showing a dip of almost £10m in relation to the price the Premier League side paid for him just last year.
There remains hope that the 26-year-old can rediscover his form in Portugal to bolster his value, however, circumstances won't change the fact that the market move was a low for Wolves.
The summer transfer window officially slams shut on Friday night and Manchester United are in the market to add a left-back to their squad before that happens.
What's the latest Manchester United transfer news?
Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that the Red Devils are eyeing up a number of options in that position to cover for Luke Shaw, who is set to be out for a number of weeks with a muscle injury.
The reporter has named Tottenham Hotspur full-back Sergio Reguilon as one of the names on Erik ten Hag's list following the Spanish defender's spell on loan at Atletico Madrid last season.
Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…
However, it remains to be seen whether the club are eyeing up the £53k-per-week battler for a season-long loan or a permanent deal to bolster their squad.
The news comes amid United's chase of Marc Cucurella at Chelsea, who appears to be the leading contender to fill their left-back void.
Personal terms are agreed and it seems as though a move could well be completed before transfer deadline day.
How good is Sergio Reguilon?
The 26-year-old dud's form in recent seasons does not suggest that he would be a good option for United to bring in and Ten Hag could repeat his Tyrell Malacia blunder by securing a swoop for the Spurs outcast.
Reguilon has not been able to convince Ange Postecoglou to bring him back into the first-team fray in north London and is yet to feature in a matchday squad for his side this term.
This comes after a dismal spell with Atletico in Spain during the 2022/23 campaign. He averaged a disappointing Sofascore rating of 6.63 across 11 LaLiga appearances and made 0.8 tackles and interceptions combined per game, which shows that the Spanish liability rarely made an impact on the pitch.
Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.
His time in his home country came after 52 Premier League outings in two seasons with Tottenham, which is a strong sample size of games of which to judge his displays.
The lightweight, who was once described as "so average" by Spurs insider John Wenham, lost 51% of his ground duels in his debut campaign with the club and then lost 50% of them throughout his second year in London.
He averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.74 over 26 top-flight starts during the 2020/21 season and this shows that the left-footed flop failed to produce consistently good performances whilst also being a liability out of possession due to his lack of strength in physical contests against his opponents.
A score of 6.74 would have placed him 20th within the United squad last term and his 6.63 rating during his loan spell with Atletico would have ranked him 21st.
Therefore, Reguilon could be Malacia 2.0 for United as the Dutch left-back was brought in last summer and has suffered due to his inconsistent displays and a lack of strength at the back.
The 24-year-old dud averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.80 across 22 Premier League matches for the Red Devils last season, which was the 16th-best score on the team.
Malacia also lost 52% of his battles on the ground and this shows that, like Reguilon, the Netherlands international is a lightweight who is unable to dominate opposition attackers.
This suggests that Ten Hag could repeat his blunder from last summer by signing another left-back who does not deliver consistently impressive performances or win a high percentage of their duels to win or maintain possession for the side.
