Rishabh Pant: 'One of the biggest things in my life right now'

Rishabh Pant, 89*
“I think this is one of the biggest things in my life right now. I am happy that all the support staff from the team and all the fans over here supported me a lot even though I wasn’t playing in the starting matches but it has been a dream series I can say that. After not playing the first match, I have been practising hard and everything paid off because we won the series.”The team management always backs me and tells me that you are matchwinner and you always have to go and win the match for the team. That’s the only thing I keep on thinking every day that I want to win matches for India and I am happy that I did it today.”It was a fifth-day pitch and the ball was turning a bit and I thought I had to be a bit disciplined with my shot selection. And if you win the match, everything pays off well. I think everything went so well for us, so I am happy.”Rishabh Pant is all smiles after guiding India home•Getty Images

Ravi Shastri, India head coach
On missing players: “This team has tremendous character and self-belief. Even after being bowled out for 36, the team had the belief that they could come back. Virat [Kohli] also left the team, but he will always be with us. That’s because this team wasn’t built during this series. This team has been built over the past five or six years. And Virat Kohli’s character has rubbed off on the team. Ajinkya Rahane led in Virat’s absence, and while he’s a cool customer, he’s a real fighter from inside. He handled the troops really well in Virat’s absence.India’s young players Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant: “What do I say about Rishabh Pant. We play him in overseas matches because he’s a match-winner, and he showed us exactly why during this series. When he makes some errors in keeping, then people start criticising him. But the way that he batted today, he wins matches for us. In fact, the way he was batting in Sydney, he would have won the game for us by staying at the wicket for another hour. I think his performance has been exceptional. Guys like Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj showed how good their temperament is. Washington Sundar was a net bowler. Natarajan was a net bowler. He [Natarajan] played one-day cricket, then T20 cricket, and got his Test debut here. And the way Washington Sundar batted, it seemed that he was a veteran of 20 Tests. The kind of temperament he showed in his partnership with Shardul Thakur…a thing to mention about Shardul, he’s been through the hard grind of first-class cricket, but he got a chance here, and he grabbed his opportunity with both hands.India’s brand of cricket: What these boys have achieved in this series is a massive feat. This is a series that we will never forget. I don’t think the cricket world will forget this series for a long time. As long as cricket is played, this series will not be forgotten. Our boys were in quarantine for six months. Some of the guys who live in metro cities weren’t even able to step out of their flats. And the only cricket they had was the IPL. Australians and New Zealanders were able to step out into parks and train June onwards. As a team, they [Australia] also played against England. Despite that, to come here and perform the way we did here is something creditable. Especially when all our main bowlers were injured. There’s this self-belief about this team, that once they cross the boundary line and enter the field, all 11 players know they are playing for the India badge. Nothing else.On Pant’s innings: “He’s batted really well. If he keeps winning matches by keeping his composure like today, then it will be a huge thing for us.”Ajinkya Rahane, captain
“It really means a lot to us. I don’t know how to describe this victory, but I am really proud of all the boys. We showed character, attitude…especially after the Adelaide Test. We decided we will fight very hard. We know Australia in Australia is a very dangerous team. We just promised not to think about results. I don’t know how to describe this victory. I am just really proud of each and every individual. When I went in (to) bat, the conversation between me and [Cheteshwar] Pujara was for Puji to bat normal, but I wanted to play with intent and if we get close to the total, then Rishabh and Mayank can get the total for us. It was all about the intent out there after lunch. Credit to Pujara for the way he batted, with the mental pressure. Washington Sundar was really good at the end.”Taking 20 wickets was the key (playing with 20 players across the Tests), and that’s why we opted for five bowlers. We knew that if we are going to win this Test match and the series, then five bowlers will be the key. Washington Sundar got (us) that balance in place of [Ravindra] Jadeja. Unfortunate that Jadeja got injured in the last Test match. Washington Sundar got that balance for us, to allow us to play five bowlers. All credit to them. [Mohammed] Siraj had played two Test matches, Saini one, Shardul Thakur one. Washington in his debut Test match. The way these guys handled pressure was really good.”As I said, after the Adelaide Test match, we didn’t discuss anything, about what happened in that Test. We just wanted to play that game. We wanted to play good on the field. We weren’t thinking about the result. Each and every individual contributed to the Melbourne Test match and that was the key moment for us. I am really happy for that.”

Young talent signs Newcastle contract in move from Premier League rivals

After falling agonisingly short of European football last season, Newcastle United are now set to use the transfer window to bring in not just talents for now but find the players that could be the future of the football club.

Newcastle want to bring young talents to Tyneside

If previous seasons under the ownership of PIF were about bringing in established stars, this summer may see Newcastle's transfer strategy pivot towards bringing in young players with high potential.

Newcastle can take Guimaraes to the next level by signing £34m "monster"

The Magpies are fighting Chelsea and Tottenham for this fast-rising talent.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 25, 2024

The most recent reports out of St James' Park have named the Toon as one of a number of clubs interested in signing Middlesbrough youngster Ajay Matthews. The three-cap England Under-17 international was electric for Boro's youth sides last season scoring 16 goals in just 17 starts.

Joining Matthews on Eddie Howe's shopping list is Mainz winger Brajan Gruda. The 20-year-old contributed four goals and three assists in the Bundesliga last season and would still have room to develop if he is to move to Newcastle. If the Toon are to get a deal for Gruda over the line they will have to fight off interest from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa as well as German sides Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

Brajan Gruda for Mainz.

On the slightly pricier end of Newcastle's pursuit of young players is Sporting Club's Ousmane Diomande. The Ivorian centre-back is just 20 years of age, however, a fee in the region of £50million could be needed to tempt him away from the Portuguese capital. Despite his high fee, Diomande could be worth the price owing to his performances last season, making 26 appearances as Sporting lifted the league title.

The Toon's mission to sign the next generation of stars doesn't seem to stop there with the latest news suggesting that Newcastle have managed to convince a young talent to move away from another Premier League side.

Everton teenager signs Newcastle contract

As first reported by The Secret Scout on X, Everton youth defender Aaron Apia has signed a contract with Newcastle United. The 2008 born gem is a left-sided centre-back that may make a strong addition to the array of youth talents already at the club.

This recent development follows news from Newcastle World which states that the 16-year-old had previously been on trial at the Tyneside outfit appearing as a substitute in under-18s matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United. Apia may have made an impression during his cameos for the Toon as the teenager has now signed a contract with the club.

The local outlet also understands that Apia rejected a contract offer from Everton before joining Newcastle showing the Toon's determination to bring young talent to the club.

Whilst Apia has made international appearances for Poland's youth sides, the defender also has the possibility to represent both Nigeria and England. With left-sided central defenders at something of a premium in the modern game, there is no doubt that the 16-year-old could be one to watch in the future.

Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders look to consolidate place in top four

A win for either side takes them one step closer to a confirmed playoff position

Sruthi Ravindranath20-Oct-20207:34

Should Narine replace Russell? Should KKR stick with Kuldeep regardless?

Big pictureThe playoffs race is on. Seven out of the eight teams still have a realistic shot at clinching the spots, while one team is still in the fray mathematically. Here are two teams at No. 3 and 4 on the table respectively, coming into the game with wins over the weekend. A win for Royal Challengers Bangalore will not put a seal on the matter but would take them to the second position – a rather comfortable spot to be at this point – while a loss could possibly see them slip to fourth. If Kolkata Knight Riders lose, however, it could possibly make things easier for the teams below them on the table to fight for their chance, especially given their net run rate of -0.607.Also read: KKR vs RCB fantasy picksOn Saturday, AB de Villiers put on a vintage display as he saved the Royal Challengers from the jaws of defeat against Rajasthan Royals. The Knight Riders had a new match-winner in Lockie Ferguson, who made a superb entry into the season with his express pace, delivering a fantastic Super Over win against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. Both the teams, however, need their respective top-order batsmen to get off the blocks quicker. In fact, the Knight Riders’ run rate of 7.2 in the powerplay is the second-lowest among teams this season and is also their lowest since IPL 2011.In the newsHours before their match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, the Knight Riders received the news that Sunil Narine, who was reported for suspect bowling action, has been taken off the warning list. But do they have a spot for the allrounder? He’s had a sub-par season batting-wise but he has been instrumental with the ball, especially in the death overs as he showcased in his last match against the Kings XI Punjab. Chris Green and Ferguson were his replacements in the last two matches respectively. While Green had average returns against the Mumbai Indians, Ferguson was excellent with the ball, first picking up 3-15 and then a 2-2 in the Super Over against the Sunrisers. Meanwhile, Andre Russell has endured a poor season with a bat, hasn’t bowled much and even hurt his hamstring in the field while bowling on Sunday. He is probably the one Narine could replace but it remains to be seen whether the Knight Riders would take the tough call.Likely XIsKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Rahul Tripathi, 3 Nitish Rana, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Andre Russell/ Sunil Narine, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Pat Cummins, 8 Lockie Ferguson, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Varun Chakravarthy, 11 Shivam MaviRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Devdutt Padikkal, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 Shivam Dube/ Gurkeerat Mann, 6 Chris Morris, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Navdeep Saini/ Mohammad Siraj, 10 Shahbaz Ahmed, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalPrevious meetingA de Villiers special gave the Royal Challengers a big win when the teams met last week in Sharjah. On a slow pitch where every other batsman struggled to get going, de Villiers looked like he was batting on a different surface as he bludgeoned 73 off 33 balls to take Royal Challengers’ total to 194. Later Chris Morris and spinners combined to strangle the Knight Riders in the chase, taking their side to an 82-run victory.Strategy punt de Villiers’ delayed arrival against the Kings XI, when Kohli promoted Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube up the order, did not see fruitful returns and also had an impact on the result. In the three matches de Villiers came out to bat around the 11th-12th over, he had scored three fifty-plus scores and the Royal Challengers have gone on to win all these games. In the four winnings he’s walked in to bat between overs 11 to 15, he has made 234 runs and has struck at 215. Since he’s been crucial in their recent wins, the Royal Challengers could strategise his entry to the crease to get the best out of their star batsman. Should the Royal Challengers save Chris Morris for Knight Riders’ middle order? Barring Eoin Morgan, the rest of the middle order comprising Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell have been dismissed at least twice by Morris in T20s and they average less than 15 against him.’Stats that matter Both the teams have been successful at defending targets this season. They have won four out of five matches batting first and have the joint-second highest win percentage of 80% among teams batting first this season. With Morris’ inclusion, the Royal Challengers’ bowling looks a lot improved, especially in the death overs. Royal Challengers’ economy at the death has come down to 8.3 runs from 13 in the last four matches he’s been part of. Ferguson is among the best fast bowlers in the middle overs in the IPL in recent years. Among quicks who have bowled 10-plus overs in the middle overs in IPL since 2017, Ferguson has the best average of 11, the best economy of 4.8 and is the only one to have conceded at an economy of less than 6. Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan is set to play his 300th T20 de Villiers needs 58 more to reach 9000 runs in T20s

Cameron Green has 'a great cricket brain' but hope we don't put too much pressure on him: Ashton Agar

Agar, though, cautioned against burdening the allrounder with too much expectation

Andrew McGlashan21-Oct-2020Cameron Green’s Western Australia team-mate Ashton Agar believes the 21-year-old will be able to cope with the jump to international level, but has cautioned against burdening him with too much expectation after a career-best 185 not out against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield. It was Green’s fourth first-class century since the start of last season from when he is currently the leading run-scorer in the tournament. And despite currently not being able to bowl – he holds a first-class average of 21.53 with the ball – the debate around whether the time is already right to elevate him to the Australia squad will only intensify.Green batted throughout the third day at Park 25 in Adelaide, resisting a range of tactics thrown at him by the New South Wales attack that – while missing Test stars Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood – still boasted considerable quality, including Australia’s lead long-format spinner Nathan Lyon.”He’s got a great cricket brain,” Agar said. “They threw everything at him out there: bouncer plan, bowling wide channel, attacking the stumps, Nathan Lyon bowling a lot of overs – the best spinner in the world – and he had a really solid plan for everyone he faced. Even talking to him in the middle, he’s really calm and composed.”Whenever he does get the opportunity at the next level, I think he’ll certainly be ready for that when it’s there. But I just hope we don’t put too much pressure on him, just let him go about his business because he’s a beautiful player and [I] think he’ll be [an] absolute superstar.”To go in there and be 185 not out for a very young player, just shows he has maturity beyond his years and so much skill. The best part about it is he’s a great kid – a great young guy. He learns, listens, works extremely hard on his game and assesses situations really nicely. And he looks really calm at the crease, nothing seems to faze him too much. For him to go out and get a really big hundred, again, is pretty special.”Cameron Green on a roll•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Australia head coach Justin Langer has previously cautioned against promoting Green too early – particularly while he recovers from the back problems that are restricting his bowling – but that is unlikely to temper the talk ahead of the proposed Test series against India in December despite Australia’s XI being very stable.”It would be hard not to hear bit of hype,” Agar said, “but all I know is when he’s out on the cricket field, he’s just watching that ball as hard as he can. [He] loves batting, loves playing cricket and the scary part is that he’s not bowling at the moment. He’s a great bowler when he’s up and running. To be able to play as a top four batsman and a frontline fast bowler is a great combination.”There is a hope that Green may be able to bowl in match conditions in this opening stage of the Sheffield Shield, which is being played entirely in an Adelaide hub. He already has two five-wicket hauls in first-class cricket, including a best of 6 for 30, but hasn’t bowled since last November when scans revealed the early signs of stress fractures. His preparation for this season then involved tweaks to his action, which has taken time to settle.”It’s been awesome for his batting because he’s just had time to nail that down and for us cement the batting spot for the team,” Agar said. “[He has] amazing maturity, but for young fast bowlers you have to give their bodies time – they’ll have some hiccups now and again, he’s really tall and bowls quite fast. Whenever his body is right, he’ll be able to manage both pretty well, I think.”Lyon, who had bowled the equivalent of 15 overs to Green during the innings, added to the praise and despite being on the receiving end of a day in the field, said it was good to see a young batsman with the ability to produce such a long innings.”He was very, very impressive,” he said. “Last time I saw him we had the big three quicks [Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins] bowling at him. So [today is] a different story, but obviously very impressive. [He’s] very clear in his plans, played spin very well.”[He has] a big future. It was really good to see, actually. He’s 21 and not flustered by anything. Under pressure, he looked calm and clear in his plans. You’ve got to give credit where it’s due and he definitely deserves that.”

Despite Kane’s impressive tally of 54 goals in 53 games for Bayern the German media has taken issue with his recent performances. The England skipper failed to find the net against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend and also drew a blank against Villa on Wednesday evening which has drawn severe media criticism.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After a quiet display in last week's 1-1 draw with Leverkusen, slammed the forward's performance and he was in the headlines again after his showing against Villa, only registering two late shots late in the game as the Premier League side won 1-0.

  • WHAT KEOWN SAID

In response to the criticism, Keown took to the White and Jordan show to address the media’s harsh stance on Kane. He said on : "I think the German media are having an absolute laugh to be criticising him after what he’s done for Bayern since he’s been there.

"He isn’t the reason they didn’t win the Bundesliga last year. He’s been magnificent. He could’ve got them back into the game against Villa right at the end but Emi Martinez made a great save.

“I find it ridiculous. If he was German he would be lauded and we’d be talking about him for years to come, but in Germany for some reason they want to criticise him. It’s out of order. 54 goals in 53 games is not someone who is not doing it.”

While Kane may face ongoing scrutiny from sections of the German press due to his recent dip in form, his accomplishments at Bayern are difficult to ignore. His ability to find the back of the net has not diminished, with the 31-year-old scoring 10 goals in eight appearances across all competitions this season. In fact, even in the Champions League he bagged four goals against Dinamo Zagreb, which propelled him to become the highest-scoring English player in the tournament, overtaking Wayne Rooney.

"How many times?" – 64 y/o slams what he’s seen from "woeful" Rangers ace

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has labelled one Rangers player as "woeful" and "embarrassing", suggesting he should have no future at the club.

Rangers title hopes & transfer news

Philippe Clement's side picked up another crucial win in the Scottish Premiership title battle on Sunday afternoon, battling their way to a 2-1 victory away to St Mirren. Cyriel Dessers scored the winner with time ticking away, in what could be such a crucial goal come the end of the season.

Celtic's win at Dundee by the same scoreline means that Rangers' rivals still hold a three-point advantage in the title race, however, so there is still a huge amount of work to be done in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Gers will reportedly sign a "number" of new players in the summer transfer window, regardless of the outcome in the league, with a permanent move for loanee Abdallah Sima something that the club could decide to seal. In fact, Rangers are believed to be in pole position to bring him in for good from Brighton.

Krasnodar attacking midfielder Eduard Spertsyan has also emerged as a target for the Scottish giants, with the 23-year-old scoring ten goals and registering three assists in the Russian Premier League this season.

Celtic legend slams "woeful" Rangers player

Speaking to Football Insider, 64 year-old McAvennie lambasted Rangers striker Fabio Silva, slamming his antics in trying to win free kicks and penalties, saying he shouldn't earn a permanent deal to Ibrox this summer:

"They shouldn’t sign him permanently. How many times has he dived in the last few weeks? He could earn penalties but he’s woeful. [Against Hearts] he dived when Dessers passed him the ball. All Silva had to do was sidefoot it in but what on earth was he doing? It looked like there was a sniper on the roof or something! It was embarrassing for the boy.

"He’s done it too many times and it’s embarrassing for the club. Dessers is doing alright at the moment too and is much better than Silva. I’m not too fussed about Silva. Listen, I’m baffled that Wolves paid that much for him. There might be a great player in there but if you pay £35million for him, you’d expect more. He’s been awful."

McAvennie's comments may be brutal, but there is some truth to them, with some of Silva's antics since arriving on loan from Wolves leaving a lot to be desired. He spent forever on the ground in the 3-3 draw at home to Celtic, with even Rangers supporters growing impatient, and he has been an underwhelming signing to date.

On current evidence, the Gers should be focusing far more of sealing the permanent signing of Sima than Silva, with the latter simply not having a big enough impact, scoring just four goals in 19 appearances.

Clement must finally drop 4/10 Rangers star who offers "nothing"

The Light Blues attacker endured a rough afternoon against St Mirren on Sunday.

ByDan Emery Apr 28, 2024

Admittedly, the Portuguese forward is still only 21, but his all-round behaviour has been frustrating, and he would feel like too much of a risk on current evidence when Sima could in fact be the cheaper of the two permanent deals.

Emery could now drop Aston Villa star after 5/10 display vs Brighton

Aston Villa suffered a European hangover on Sunday as they were defeated 1-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.

Despite the loss, Villa are still in control of their destiny when it comes to securing a Champions League spot for next season, seven points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, albeit the London side have a game in hand.

Unai Emery will have to motivate the players ahead of their Conference League semi-final against Olympiacos on Thursday evening, although several who started over the weekend could find themselves on the bench, most notably Moussa Diaby.

Moussa Diaby’s game in numbers vs Brighton

The Frenchman registered a goal and an assist during the first leg last week, but this display was sandwiched in between two poor performances in the Premier League.

Against Chelsea, he came on for the injured Youri Tielemans, before being subbed off with ten minutes left, failing to have a positive impact at all.

On Sunday, the winger was once again anonymous during a Premier League match. Not only did he take just 17 touches during his time on the pitch, but the former Bayer Leverkusen gem also completed only seven of his 12 attempted passes and managed only one shot on target during the game.

His defensive output was also poor. Diaby won zero of his two ground duels contested along with losing possession six times and being dribbled past once. In a match where he was expected to shine, carrying on from midweek, the player looked tired.

Moussa Diaby

Indeed, he was given a match rating of 5/10 by Birmingham Mail journalist John Townley for his performance. Does Emery drop him for the second leg? Or will he stick with the French winger in the hope that he improves?

Moussa Diaby’s statistics this season

Despite scoring ten goals and grabbing eight assists, It's fair to say Diaby hasn’t quite lived up to his staggering £51.9m transfer fee.

Out of his 51 appearances for the club this term, the 24-year-old has started only 33, with Emery occasionally using him as an impact sub.

Among his teammates, Diaby does rank fourth for goals and assists (13) in the top flight, while also ranking second for shots on target per match (0.6), first for big chances created (12) and fifth for key passes per game (1.2), proving that he is one of Villa’s most dangerous attacking threats.

After this poor display against Brighton, however, Emery could well drop him to the bench against the Greek side, perhaps using him as a late sub if things are close.

Moussa Diaby

Should Villa qualify for the Champions League, Diaby could use this as a platform to really showcase his talents and rediscover the incredible form which saw him shine for Leverkusen – registering 97 goal contributions in just 172 matches – between 2019 and 2023.

The Midlands side will have to come out firing on Thursday. If they manage to score an early goal, the club have a good chance of making it through to the final.

West Brom must cut ties with £20k-p/w star who’s worth less than Fellows

West Bromwich Albion will aim to get over their recent slump of form in the Championship, which has only seen them win once in their last five second-tier encounters, when they travel to title-chasing Leicester City this coming Saturday.

The Baggies will prey on the Foxes going through a dreadful patch of results themselves near the top of the table when they travel to the King Power Stadium, in a contest that could have huge potential ramifications on who lifts the title at the start of next month.

Tom Fellows could be a difference maker for Carlos Corberan's men away at Leicester, despite largely putting in an anonymous display against Sunderland last time out with the 21-year-old an exciting future talent at the Hawthorns.

On the contrary, one ageing winger's time in the West Midlands could be over this approaching summer with his contract up and his value falling below that of Fellows.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

Matt Phillips' future at West Brom

Once purchased for a bumper £6m when the Baggies were still competing in the riches of the Premier League, it's fair to say Matt Phillips – now 33 years of age – is now nowhere near worth that lump sum.

It's been a frustrating season in truth for the experienced attacker, who has only just returned to the side recently after missing the end of 2023 and the first few months of 2024 owing to injury setback after injury setback.

Away from his agonising miss against Ipswich Town, Phillips has shone in spurts this season when fully fit, however, by amassing three goals and three assists from 23 appearances.

But, with the emergence of talents such as Fellows breaking through when Phillips has been sidelined on top of Celtic loanee Mikey Johnston setting the second tier alight since joining in January from down the channels, it looks as if his place in the Baggies camp is no longer so solid.

With the veteran's contract up in the summer too, West Brom could even up losing their distinguished servant for free.

West Brom winger Matt Phillips.

Even with his transfer value taking a significant tumble since joining for £6m eight years ago, this would be a major blunder on West Brom's behalf to see him walk out of the building for nothing.

Matt Phillips' transfer value in 2024

Phillips' worth in 2024 now comes in at a far lesser €1m (£853k) – according to Football Transfers – which sees breakout sensation Fellows boast a higher worth now at €1.4m (£1.1m) despite only bursting onto the scene this campaign.

The homegrown Baggies star does also better Phillips' numbers for the season however, benefitting from the 33-year-old's frequent nature in the Hawthorns treatment room by helping himself to a superior five goals and four assists from 34 games in all competitions.

The future looks bright for Fellows in a Baggies strip, whilst Phillips looks to be staring his exit from the club straight in the face as Corberan looks to potentially clear out a number of the more veteran members of his squad soon.

Adam Reach, Erik Pieters and Yann M'Vila to name a few all come in as being 30 years and older like Phillips, with that trio all out of contract in the summer as well.

It looks very likely there could be a clear out of these old heads therefore, with Phillips' exit stinging the most as the £20k-per-week winger has had a long and celebrated career in the West Midlands.

But, with Fellows only going to get better, this could be the correct call even if it's a tough one to make.
