A bore revisited

The pitch was as bare as any in the preceding matches in the tropical Caribbean and just as heartbreaking for the bowlers

Tony Cozier at Chester-le-Street15-May-2009It might be the Test match ground nearer to the north pole than any other, with the corresponding chill in the air, but the opening day of the Test between the teams at the Riverside Ground was the Antigua Recreation Ground, Kensington and Queen’s Park Oval all revisited. The pitch was as bare as any in the preceding matches in the tropical Caribbean and just as heartbreaking for the bowlers. There was no bounce, no pace, no movement and, consequently, no excitement. The batsmen, in this instance Alastair Cook and the eager Ravi Bopara, gathered their runs with no fuss, just as Andrew Strauss had done with his three consecutive first innings hundreds in Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad.Ironically, while Strauss went cheaply this time, Cook and Bopara advanced past their hundreds, Bopara joining the elite company of Herbert Sutcliffe, Denis Compton, Geoffrey Boycott and Graham Gooch as the fifth English player with three in a row.The slowness of the surface curbed their more adventurous strokes, except for one over when Bopara lofted Sulieman Benn for four, six and four to move to within two of his landmark. He then apparently recalled Kevin Pietersen’s extravagance in the Sabina Test back in February when he hit four, four, six, also off Benn, and went for the glory of a six next ball to raise his hundred, only to lob a catch to the keeper. Bopara bided his time and got there with a single a few balls later.Even England’s first day scores were almost identical to those in the Caribbean – 301 for 3 at both the ARG and Kensington; 258 for 2 at Queen’s Park; 302 for 2 here.To their credit, the West Indies bowlers were undeterred by this continuing unfairness and plugged away all day, supported by enthusiastic fielding. One chance was missed, a difficult leg-side deflection off Lionel Baker when Bopara was on 51. A few edges were found and passed but there was nothing for the bowlers.More like this and, just as Chris Gayle
has warned, they will all be trooping off to the IPL and other Twenty20 events where four overs is the extent of their allotment. The main point of Gayle’s controversial and widely discussed comments before the match was that, as far as he was concerned, there is now so much cricket that he soon has to make a choice as to what to give up.As one tournament has followed another -Test, ODIs, Stanford, IPL – he, and a few others in the West Indies team, haven’t had a reasonable break for two years now.Gayle himself has been increasingly sidelined by injuries. Not unexpectedly, he said his choice would be for the shortest form of the game which just happens to be the most lucrative.
That inevitably is a threat to what the administrators refer to as the “primacy of Test cricket”, but pitches that contribute to give such bland, uneven contests such as this and those recently in the Caribbean and elsewhere, do so equally.A 101 reasons were put forward for the few thousand spectators sprinkled around stands yesterday – the early scheduling, the cold, the sporting public’s interest in the climax of the football season (in this neck of the woods, especially Newcastle United’s fight to remain in the Premiership), the recession and so on.More days like this, without any drama or tension, and with batsmen indulging themselves, will ensure that crowds, and television viewers, diminish even further.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Flick was far from pleased with his side’s performance following the draw. His frustration boiled over, leading him to take drastic action by locking his players in the dressing room. This wasn’t just another post-match pep talk; it was a full-on confrontation. He reportedly gave the players the same stern message that he had shared with the media during his press conference, but this time with even stronger language.

  • WHAT FLICK SAID

Flick’s words to the media were sharp and direct: "The most important thing is that, when the transfer window is closed, everyone who stays is 100 per cent committed to this club. No egos, because egos kill success. Last season, we played as one unit. We have to be like this again now."

The 2025-26 Manchester City home shirt is set to pay tribute to the club's rich history, with the iconic sash making a comeback. This design element, which has appeared on various kits over the years, such as the 2018-19 and 2010-11 third kits, was a defining feature for the club in the early to mid-1970s. However, it has never been part of City’s home shirt, making next season's jersey a fresh take on their heritage.

City and Puma made the kit launch special by releasing a unique launch film, directed by Glenn Kitson. The film features stars like Erling Haaland, Manuel Akanji, Oscar Bobb and Alex Greenwood. It would also feature a talent show hosted by John Thompson from The Fast Show and Cold Feet.

The home kit is available in both authentic and replica versions from May 13 at PUMA.com, Manchester City official stores, and select retailers worldwide. The authentic jersey, worn by the players, is crafted with Puma’s ULTRAWEAVE fabric, which reduces weight and friction for elite-level performance. The replica Jersey offers the same striking look with a more relaxed fit, perfect for both match days and everyday wear. Both versions incorporate PUMA’s dryCELL sweat-wicking technology to keep fans and players dry and comfortable.

While City last donned black back in 2023-24, this version opts for a more refined and minimalist feel, trading flash for elegance.

The kit is completed with matching black shorts and socks, keeping the design cohesive and clean from head to toe. Fans can snap up the new away jersey from July 18, with a retail price tag of £130 ($175).

Manchester City 2025-26 special-edition kit, release date & price

With the spotlight shifting to the United States for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, Manchester City have unveiled a striking special-edition kit that they'll don during the tournament.

Doubling down on the retro sash theme, recently revived in their 2025-26 home kit, City have rolled out not one, but two exclusive designs crafted specifically for the Club World Cup. Both the outfield and goalkeeper kits incorporate fresh takes on the iconic diagonal stripe that’s long been a part of the club’s visual legacy.

The outfield jersey arrives in crisp white, accented by a dual-tone red-and-black sash that cuts boldly across the front. Meanwhile, the keeper’s kit goes full throttle with a vivid orange base and a sash in black and yellow, classic colours that will instantly strike a chord with long-time City supporters.

In a creative twist, the sash looks almost hand-sketched, as if drawn in marker pen, giving it a raw, artistic feel. The fabric also features a subtle all-over graphic of City fans mid-Poznan, capturing that iconic moment when supporters turn their backs to the pitch and bounce in unison.

Dubbed the KidSuper sash kit, this alternate look will replace the club’s traditional sky-blue strip during the Club World Cup, which was officially revealed last month. As for price tags, fans can expect to fork out around £140 ($190) for the authentic version, while the more wallet-friendly stadium edition will retail for £85 ($115).

In a city where drizzle drapes the streets and football pulses through every heartbeat, PUMA and Manchester City have pulled the covers off a third kit that feels every bit as Manchester as the rain itself. Blending local pride with cutting-edge design, the 2025-26 strip celebrates the beauty of subtlety, built to shine rain or shine.

The new shirt swaps City's familiar palette for a sleek silver-grey canvas, adorned with a raindrop-inspired graphic that captures the look of water trickling down a windowpane. It's a nod to the city's famously wet weather and the deep bond between the club and its home. Officially labeled "Cool Weather/Pro Green," the design pairs the muted base with a punch of neon green, ensuring the kit pops both in the Manchester gloom and under stadium floodlights.

The vivid green accents, running along the sleeves, collar, shoulders, and sponsor logos, add an electric charge to the understated background, giving the shirt a modern edge without losing its local touch.

As with many third kits, it's a bold departure from tradition, yet the combination of icy neutrals and high-vis highlights makes for a striking look that’s sure to turn heads. Fans can get their hands on the PUMA Manchester City 2025-26 third kit from Thursday, August 14, 2025.

Johnson lashes out at Warner, asks if he 'warrants a hero's send-off'

Former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has launched a scathing attack on his former team-mates David Warner and George Bailey stating that Warner’s desire for a Test farewell on his terms reeked of the same “arrogance and disrespect” as the sandpaper incident in 2018 and that Bailey is too close to the players. As anticipated, Warner was named in Australia’s 14-man squad for the first Test against Pakistan by Australia’s selectors on Sunday with Bailey, the chairman of selectors, stating he was in Australia’s best XI.Related

In his Sunday column in , Johnson queried both Warner’s public desire for a Test farewell and why it was being accommodated by the selectors despite his form over the last two years, given he has averaged 26.74 in his last 36 Test innings. Johnson also accused him of not fully owning his part in the ball-tampering scandal of 2018.”It’s been five years and David Warner has still never really owned the ball-tampering scandal,” Johnson wrote. “Now the way he is going out is underpinned by more of the same arrogance and disrespect to our country.”As we prepare for David Warner’s farewell series, can somebody please tell me why?”Why a struggling Test opener gets to nominate his own retirement date. And why a player at the centre of one of the biggest scandals in Australian cricket history warrants a hero’s send-off?”Warner certainly isn’t Australia’s Test captain and never deserved to be for that matter. In fact, he ends his career under a lifetime leadership ban.”Yes, he has a decent overall record and some say is one of our greatest opening bats. But his past three years in Test cricket have been ordinary, with a batting average closer to what a tailender would be happy with.”It’s the ball-tampering disgrace in South Africa that many will never forget. Although Warner wasn’t alone in Sandpapergate, he was at the time a senior member of the team and someone who liked to use his perceived power as a ‘leader’.”Does this really warrant a swansong, a last hurrah against Pakistan that was forecast a year in advance as if he was bigger than the game and the Australian cricket team?”Granted he made his double century against South Africa at the MCG last summer, but they were the only runs he had scored in years. Leading into this year’s Ashes series that was the only time he had reached 50 in his previous 17 Test innings.”Mitchell Johnson and David Warner played 26 Tests together•Getty Images

Johnson was Warner’s team-mate from 2009 to 2015 when Johnson retired and he, Warner and Bailey were all team-mates in Australia’s 5-0 Ashes series whitewash in 2013-14. All three were part of the 2015 ODI World Cup win, although Bailey was not in the final XI despite captaining the team in the lead-up to the tournament.Johnson then took aim at Bailey for how Warner has been handled by the selection panel and accused him of being too close to the players, stating that Warner’s situation was akin to the conflict-of-interest Bailey had when Tim Paine’s career ended.”When then-captain Tim Paine’s career was ending over the sexting controversy, chairman of selectors George Bailey said he didn’t want to be part of deciding Paine’s fate because the pair were close friends,” Johnson wrote.”Bailey said he would leave it to then coach Justin Langer and fellow selector Tony Dodemaide to work it out.”The handling of Warner in recent years, who played with Bailey in all three forms, raises the question of whether Bailey was simply too quickly out of playing and into the job and too close to some of the players.”I also wonder what the role of the head selector is these days. It seems to have moved to be a part of the inner sanctum rather than standing aside from it. There’s now throw downs for the players, golfing together and celebrating wins to all hours.”Bailey was asked to respond to Johnson’s article during a pre-scheduled media conference on Sunday but he played a straight bat.”I’ve been sent little snippets of it,” Bailey said. “I hope he’s okay.”It is not the first time Johnson has used his newspaper column to fire shots at the current Australian team. In 2022, he wrote that Pat Cummins was “gutless” for not endorsing Justin Langer to remain as coach and that Cummins had failed his first big test as captain “pretty miserably”. That article caused a strong private and public response from Australia’s fast bowlers against their former teammate.George Bailey does not think it is beneficial for a selector to be distant from the team•Steve Bell/AFP/Getty Images

Bailey has redefined the role of chairman of Australia’s selectors since taking over the post vacated by Trevor Hohns in 2021. Previous chairmans did not embed themselves closely with the team on tour but both Bailey and fellow selector Tony Dodemaide have done so.Bailey has been widely praised within Australia cricket by players and coaches across all levels for his communication and messaging. He has been involved in the selection of teams that have won a T20 World Cup, a World Test Championship and an ODI World Cup in the space of two years. He did not want to go into detail on his philosophy on being a chairman of selectors but simply asked a question back as to why being distant from the team would make him a better selector.”To be honest, I don’t think now is probably the appropriate time to go into it,” Bailey said. “My only question would be, or observation will be, if someone can show me how being distant and unaware of what players are going through and what the plans are with the team and with the coaching staff, how that’s more beneficial, I’d be all ears.”As far as Johnson’s specific charge on Warner’s selection, Bailey was unequivocal in his belief that Warner was the best option to open alongside Usman Khawaja.”Ultimately, we still think he’s in our best 11 players to win the first Test,” Bailey said. “I think Test cricket, in terms of the way that the World Test Championship points is set up, each Test is critical.”There’s points on the line for each and every game. So our focus is very much on picking the 11 that we think can do the job and obviously there’s roles within that for each individual and how that actually structures up the team as a whole and we think David is the right person for that for this Test.”Bailey also warned that replacing Warner at the top of the order in Australia’s Test side was similar to Australia’s search for a spin replacement for Shane Warne between 2007 and 2011, given Warner’s unique ability to put opposition attacks under pressure.”That ability to put the opposition under pressure is pretty special, and not to be taken lightly,” Bailey said. “Whenever you’ve had someone who’s had that longevity and been so dominating in a role, [it’s important] just to temper the expectations of whoever is going to be the replacement there.”I think back to Warnie finishing up as a spinner and how many spinners got brought in and shuffled out in the quest to almost try and replicate Warnie. And I don’t think you ever try and replicate someone who’s played a role for as long as someone has done it as well as they have and I’d put David in that category, the way he’s opened the batting for Australia for such a long period of time. So that’s something that we’re certainly conscious of making sure that that fit post-David is the right one.”

Bancroft joins Warner at Thunder, Hatzoglou to Hurricanes

Cameron Bancroft has made a bold move in the BBL leaving two-time reigning champions Perth Scorchers to join former Australia Test opening partner David Warner at Sydney Thunder on a three-year deal.Scorchers have also lost legspinner Peter Hatzoglou who has signed with Hobart Hurricanes despite being a key part of the Scorchers squad in their back-to-back titles.Bancroft was a vital cog in the Scorchers’ title last year having begun the season running the drinks after being dropped from the side during their successful 2021-22 campaign. He played the last 11 games of the season and made 357 runs at 51.00, striking at 140, including four half-centuries. He made a career-best 95 not out in the final game of the home and away season before scoring 53 not out in the Qualifier against Sydney Sixers to help Scorchers bank a home final which they won against Brisbane Heat. But despite one of his best-ever BBL seasons, and being third all-time on Scorchers’ career runscorers list, the depth of top-order batting at Scorchers saw Bancroft look elsewhere for more long-term contract security. He was courted by a number of clubs but has landed at Thunder where he looks set to play alongside Warner again despite the pair’s strained relationship dating back to the Sandpaper incident in Cape Town in 2018 when the pair were Test opening partners. They have since opened the batting together for Australia in the 2019 Ashes but the Sandpaper incident and long-term fallout still casts a shadow over the pair.Peter Hatzoglou bowls•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Meanwhile, Hatzoglou has also left Scorchers to join Hurricanes for the upcoming BBL season. Hatzoglou joined Scorchers ahead of the 2021-22 season after crossing from Melbourne Renegades. He was a key part of Scorchers’ 2021-22 title where they played almost entirely on the east coast of Australia during the Covid-19-affected season. Scorchers played two spinners for most of that season and Hatzoglou formed a formidable partnership with Ashton Agar in the middle overs, including taking 1 for 13 from three overs in the 2021-22 final against Sydney Sixers. But he played just 10 matches last season and was not in the XI for the winning final as Perth opted for a four-pronged pace attack and a spinning allrounder in Cooper Connolly at No.7 on their fast, bouncy home track at Perth Stadium.Hurricanes look set to use Hatzoglou alongside unusual left-arm orthodox spinner Paddy Dooley who had a breakout season last year.”I’m really excited for my next chapter in the BBL with the Hurricanes,” Hatzoglou said.”I’m one of those players whose career has followed a more non-traditional path to get to the point I’m at now, so I’m just really thankful for every opportunity that comes my way.”Watching from afar over the past couple of seasons, it is obvious that the Hurricanes have pretty much all the right ingredients within their program already. I’m looking forward to coming in, getting to know some of the guys and the staff a bit better, and contributing whatever small part I can to hopefully the ultimate on-field success.”Hatzoglou has been playing in the T20 Blast in England for Glamorgan recently after being drafted in as an overseas replacement for Australia quick Michael Neser.Out of contract West Australian left-arm swing bowler Joel Paris is set to leave Hurricanes and is set to sign with Melbourne Stars. Chelsea now battling Barcelona for "warrior" £25m defender who pocketed Leao

Chelsea have now joined the race for a £25m right-back, but they are set to face competition for his signature from Barcelona and Liverpool, according to a report.

Reece James back to his best

There is arguably little reason for the Blues to make a move for a new right-back this summer, given that they are well-stocked in that area of the pitch, with Reece James now showing signs he could be back to his best after several injury setbacks.

James returned to the England team for the first time in two-and-a-half years against Latvia, and the 25-year-old put in a top-quality performance, opening the scoring in the Three Lions’ comprehensive 3-0 victory.

That said, Enzo Maresca may want to err on the side of caution, given that his captain is very susceptible to injuries, and there has also been speculation about Malo Gusto’s future, with Liverpool shortlisting the right-back as a potential replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As such, a new right-back may be required in the summer transfer window, and Chelsea have now entered the race to sign Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, according to a report from Caught Offside.

The Blues have now received an offer for a player Enzo Maresca called “fantastic” earlier this season.

Liverpool and Barcelona are said to be in fierce competition for Read’s signature, with the Merseyside club looking set to lose Trent Alexander-Arnold amid interest from Real Madrid.

Manchester United and Atlético Madrid are also named as potential suitors for the defender, but Feyenoord should be in a strong negotiating position, given that he remains contracted until 2028, meaning they could hold out for €25m – €30m (£21m – £25m)

Read impressing in the Champions League

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig lauded the 18-year-old for his performances in both legs of Feyenoord’s Champions League tie against AC Milan earlier this season, while also branding the teenager a “warrior” of a defender.

The youngster was faced with the difficult task of dealing with left-winger Rafael Leao, but he managed to keep the Portugal international quiet across the two legs, helping his side to a clean sheet with a solid performance in the first encounter.

The starlet has also been impressive in an attacking sense this season, picking up six assists in 17 Eredivisie outings, indicating that he is a well-rounded full-back.

Read’s performances for Feyenoord suggest he could be a fantastic long-term addition for the Blues, however, there are question marks over how much game time he would receive, should Gusto stay at Chelsea and James remain injury-free.
