Arsenal’s 4/10 man should be sold after Fulham defeat

Arsenal's hopes of finally lifting another Premier League crown took a mammoth hit away at Fulham on Sunday afternoon.

The back end of 2023 has not been kind to the Gunners who now only have one win to show for their efforts in their last five games.

The defeat against West Ham was perhaps unfortunate, no matter how poor they were in both boxes. Indeed, they registered a whopping 77 touches in the opposition's penalty area without scoring.

This time they did score as they ultimately slipped to a 2-1 defeat. On this occasion, they certainly did deserve it. This was one of the worst performances under Mikel Arteta's reign so far and leaves them in a battle to secure a top-four berth, let alone challenge for the title.

They are now level on points with Manchester City and could slip even further behind in the race if Liverpool beat Newcastle on New Year's Day.

There were a host of nominees for the Gunners' worst performer on the day, but Eddie Nketiah was sadly one player who didn't stand up when it mattered at Craven Cottage.

Eddie Nketiah's performance in numbers

This was a glorious opportunity for the English forward to stake a claim to Arteta. After all, he already has a hat-trick this season in the league – against Sheffield United – and Gabriel Jesus hasn't exactly been prolific, scoring just three Premier League goals.

However, this is a player who now hasn't scored away from home in the top flight for a year. He ends 2023 without an away goal to his name at this level; a statistic that rather sums up the attacker's laboured approach to the game.

There is no doubting that Nketiah is a good finisher. He's a cracking poacher but the fact of the matter is he doesn't possess the tools to be a threat against a low block. The 24-year-old also doesn't offer a great amount in the build-up phase either.

That was seen first-hand against Fulham were he dropped an "utterly anonymous" performance as SPORTbible's Tom Marshall-Bailey put it.

This was a torrid afternoon for Nketiah with the striker perhaps rightfully earning just a 4/10 match rating courtesy of the Standard. That may even be rather generous for a man who managed just 24 touches of the ball – six fewer than goalkeeper David Raya – and only eight accurate passes in 90 minutes of play.

Nketiah offered very little throughout, managing just one chance of note, firing wide from a tight angle during the first half.

Nketiah's future at Arsenal

In truth, it would be a great surprise if the forward's time at Arsenal came to an end in January but if the Gunners are serious about toppling Manchester City come next May, they need an upgrade.

They don't just need an upgrade on Nketiah, however. They need a more natural goalscorer than Jesus too.

A deal for Ivan Toney is one the club "want" to do as per Miguel Delaney of the Independent but with a £100m asking price previously touted, splashing such an amount of cash in January will not be easy.

That said, even before a striker arrives, raising funds by selling Nketiah might not be the worst idea. His overall goal tally speaks volumes and he's attracted interest from across the league too.

Only this weekend was it reported by The Daily Mail that Arsenal had rejected an enquiry from Crystal Palace for the former Leeds loanee.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Well, after this display, it may not be a surprise if they chase up a few bids over the course of the next month. Nketiah will very likely be an Arsenal player once the window closes, but that is a sad fact that speaks volumes of the club's recent plight. They need to get rid, and get rid soon.

Deandra Dottin's all-round brilliance demolishes Pakistan

She followed her dominant 96 with 3 for 14 to hand Pakistan a 146-run loss in the first ever women’s ODI at the Dubai International Stadium

Deandra Dottin demolished Pakistan in the first ever women’s ODI to be played at the Dubai International Stadium, with a dominant 96 and 3 for 14. Her all-round brilliance handed Pakistan a 146-run drubbing and West Indies two championship points.West Indies secured the victory after Pakistan lost 9 for 24 to be dismissed for 70 in their chase of 217. Javeria Khan had stood in as captain in place of Bismah Maroof who was rested after she was hit on the jaw while attempting to catch the ball on the eve of the game.Dottin’s disdainful all-round show followed a productive T20I series in which she struck 158 runs and took three wickets. On Thursday, after West Indies had laboured to 25 for 1 in the Powerplay, she bailed her side out of trouble. Dottin’s opening partner Kycia Knight, though, was bowled for an 18-ball duck in the sixth over by Sana Mir.Dottin, however, found able assistance from the returning captain Stafanie Taylor, who had opted out of the T20I series in Karachi that West Indies won 2-1. They brought up the team fifty in the 22nd over, and then in the next over, Dottin cut loose to smash Umaima Sohail for 11 runs. The pair put on a 146-run stand, West Indies’ fifth highest in ODIs. They attacked offspinner Nida Dar and left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu in the 37th and 38th overs, before medium-pacer Kainat Imtiaz had Taylor holing out to Sidra Ameen in the 40th over for an enterprising 97-ball 58, her first international fifty in nearly a year.Dottin muscled eight fours and two sixes in her 139-ball knock, but was denied a hundred by Imtiaz, who ended with 3 for 49. After Dottin’s departure, contrasting cameos from Shermaine Campbelle (26* off 30 balls) and Chinelle Henry (18* off 9 balls) hauled West Indies past 200.In reply, Pakistan folded for 70 in 29.5 overs. After they lost Sidra Ameen for a duck in the second over, Nahida Khan, the other opener, top-scored with a 47-ball 23. However, she had to retire hurt after being hit on the visor of her helmet. Soon after, Dottin bowled the No. 4 batsman Sohail for a golden duck, in the 17th over, triggering a full-blown collapse. With Aimen Anwar opting not to bat after sustaining a hamstring injury during West Indies’ innings, Pakistan’s chase had a premature end.Like Dottin, Afy Fletcher contributed handsomely in scripting Pakistan’s downfall, picking up 3 for 17 in 8.5 overs.

West Brom may have their next Louie Barry in 20 y/o starlet

Missing out on the Championship playoff spots last season by just three points, Carlos Corberan's West Bromwich Albion will hope history doesn't repeat itself again with the Baggies just outside the playoff picture once again 16 games into the new second-tier campaign.

The Baggies left the door open for Sunderland to leapfrog above them in the league standings last match, West Brom losing narrowly at St Mary's to Russell Martin's Southampton 2-1 to surrender their grasp on sixth position to Tony Mowbray's Black Cats.

Personnel at the Hawthorns in the form of John Swift and Grady Diangana will hope they can lead from the front to push the West Midlanders further up the division, Corberan's men desperate to break their now three-season stay in the second tier to return to facing off against English football's elite.

West Brom winger Grady Diangana.

The Baggies manager could even gamble on picking young talent Tom Fellows ahead of senior faces to spearhead a sustained promotion push, the 20-year-old tipped for a big future in the game.

The one-time Crawley Town loanee has been unleashed onto the Championship sparingly by the Spaniard this season, showing glimpses of his exceptional creativity in short-lived cameos.

Tom Fellows' statistics this season

Fellows' electric performances at youth level for West Brom have more than warranted Corberan giving him brief cameo appearances at senior level now, the 20-year-old netting 14 goals in total for the Baggies at U18 and U21 level.

Handed his first ever first-team appearance in the second tier versus Reading in 2021, Fellows has gone on to feature in the senior ranks 14 more times.

Yet to register a goal or an assist in the men's team at the Hawthorns, Fellows has nonetheless impressed in the second tier when substituted on.

A brief 15-minute spell off the bench versus QPR saw the youngster create a big opening for a teammate to increase the Baggies lead as per Sofascore, strolling past his marker with ease to then tee up Jed Wallace who squandered the opportunity.

Corberan could well begin to tinker with his regimented first eleven to accommodate the 20-year-old to start more matches, displacing the likes of Matt Phillips and Diangana as a result.

It could well be a conundrum that the Spanish manager has to come to terms with soon, Fellows linked with a move away from the Hawthorns in recent weeks owing to his contract running out at the end of the season.

Fellow's future at West Brom

West Brom won't want to have another case of the one that got away, Louie Barry leaving the Baggies as a youngster for Barcelona a notable departee.

However, that situation could be repeated here with reports suggesting that the youth product turned infrequent first-teamer is subject to interest from abroad, Football Insider suggesting that Bundesliga outfits Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg are interested in West Brom's number 31.

There's also interest from West Brom's promotion rivals in the form of Southampton and Leicester City, the Baggies hoping that they can bat away any potential bids by giving their young talent more starting opportunities in the weeks to come.

Fellows could stake a claim to be Corberan's starting man down the left wing, an unnatural slot for the 20-year-old to occupy but one he could fill with a lack of options available to his manager – Adam Reach sidelined with an injury currently down that flank.

West Brom will do everything in their power to keep Fellows at the club, an emerging young talent who looks as if he can only get better if nurtured and developed with patience at the Hawthorns.

Nível do futebol brasileiro

Estamos trabalhando bastante a fase defensiva.

Leeds: Elland Road star saw his value rise by a whopping 208% after leaving

Former Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino endured a turbulent time during his little over three years at the club and his work in the transfer market could be questioned.

One sale, in particular, that supporters could question the Italian over was Scottish forward Ross McCormack, who left to join Fulham in 2014 and saw his market value soar over his spell in London.

How much did Leeds sign Ross McCormack for?

The Whites reportedly paid a modest fee of £350k to sign the exciting attacker from Cardiff City to bolster their squad in the summer of 2010.

He had produced 30 goals and five assists in 88 competitive matches for the Welsh side and that prompted Leeds to swoop for his services.

How many goals did McCormack score for Leeds?

The former Bluebirds star went on to plunder 58 goals in 157 games for the Yorkshire-based outfit over the course of four years at Elland Road.

McCormack struggled at the top end of the pitch in his first season at the club as he finished the 2010/11 campaign with two goals and one assist in 20 Championship appearances.

Former Leeds forward Ross McCormack.

However, the Scotland international found the back of the net a whopping 51 times over the next three league seasons combined, along with 29 assists, for the Whites.

His best year in a Leeds shirt, arguably, came during the 2013/14 term as the former Cardiff ace enjoyed a phenomenal year in front of goal for the club.

McCormack was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for his outstanding performances as he produced a stunning 28 goals and ten assists in 46 league outings. He was directly involved in a goal every 1.21 matches on average, which shows that the talented gem was a constant threat in the final third.

How much was McCormack worth at Leeds?

The prolific forward was valued at €2.6m (£2.2m) by Transfermarkt at the end of that season and Cellino opted to cash in on the attacker as the Italian sold him to Championship rivals Fulham.

Shortly before the deal to sell him to the Cottagers, the ex-Leeds owner put out a club statement that confirmed that he wanted to keep hold of McCormack and that the Whites did not have to accept any offers for his services.

Former Leeds striker Ross McCormack.

Despite that, the Scottish whiz ended up signing for the London-based outfit for a reported fee within the region of £9m later that summer.

How much was McCormack worth at Fulham?

The "lethal" – as he was dubbed by reporter Andrew Slaven – magician saw his value soar to €8m (£6.9m) via Transfermarkt by the end of his two-year spell with Fulham.

This means that his market value rocketed up by 208% within the space of two years after leaving Elland Road, which also resulted in a staggering £14m transfer to Aston Villa from Craven Cottage in the summer of 2016.

Former Fulham forward Ross McCormack.

McCormack was a consistent performer for the Cottagers in London as he racked up 42 goals and 22 assists in 100 appearances in all competitions.

The now-37-year-old scored 21 goals and assisted ten in 45 Championship games during his final campaign with the club in the 2015/16 season as he continued to prove himself to be an outstanding forward at that level after his time with Leeds.

Therefore, Cellino and Leeds had a mare with the sale of McCormack in 2014 as they could have cashed in for more money if they stuck to their statement and resisted the temptation to sell him that year.

They could have received a higher fee as his market value continued to soar through his excellent performances on the pitch, which is why the club may look back on this deal with regret.

Amorim can replace Amad & unleash Man Utd teen who wasn’t on bench vs Spurs

Manchester United have struggled under Ruben Amorim so far. The Red Devils have so far been led in 21 matches by their new manager, but have managed to win just ten of those games, losing nine times and drawing two along the way.

There have been some incredibly disappointing defeats in there, too. They include a 2-0 defeat away from home against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a loss by the same scoreline at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace.

There have been some high points, including a win away to Manchester City and a draw at rivals and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

However, they will now be without the man who scored the crucial goals in those games, Amad.

Amad’s impact under Amorim

In a season of huge disappointment for the Red Devils, one of the only good things has been the performances of Amad. The Ivorian forward was described as “unstoppable” after his Derby Day heroics by United legend turned Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

Despite a big impact in the tenure of former manager Erik ten Hag, Amad found opportunities sparse under the Dutchman. However, that cannot be said for his time under Amorim. The Portuguese manager seemingly loves the attacker, and has, at times, relied on him to dig his side out of a hole.

In 20 appearances under the former Sporting CP boss, the United number 16 has managed six goals and five assists, with nine of those coming in games where his side won or drew. Amad’s contributions have been massive this season.

So, for United to be without Amad for the rest of the season, is a huge blow. Amorim confirmed last week that the Ivorian damaged his ankle ligaments and will miss the remainder of the campaign.

It leaves the Portuguese manager with the unenviable task of finding an in-house replacement.

Perhaps the answer could lie in United’s ever-productive Carrington academy.

United’s in-house Amad replacement

Sunday afternoon’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was a memorable day for several of United’s academy players. Amorim named eight of them on the bench, bringing Chido Obi onto the pitch for the final throes of the game, for his first-team debut.

However, the solution to his Amad problem may not lie in the players he selected on Sunday afternoon in North London, but in the form of Shea Lacey, an attacker who was not involved against Spurs.

Lacey is an attacking player who is held in high regard and is believed to have a “huge future ahead”, according to football talent scout Jacek Kulig. The youngster has struggled with injuries in the last few months but is finally back to full fitness and playing weekly for United’s academy.

His record for the Red Devils youth side is impressive. He has played 30 times for the under-18s and the under-19s in the UEFA Youth League, scoring five goals and grabbing seven assists in that time.

Just like Amad, Lacey is a left-footed right winger, who excels in the half spaces and has exceptional close control. He is also comfortable cutting inside on his left foot and trying his luck from range, as this strike against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2023 shows.

The Liverpool-born winger is a player who can have a big impact in a short space of time. His stats on Sofascore from a 26-minute cameo against Galatasaray in the UEFA Youth League last season show this.

In that short time, he created one big chance and won four out of seven ground duels.

Perhaps Lacey is the solution to replacing Amad. He is of a similar profile and excels in the same areas of the pitch as United’s Ivorian winger.

At 17 years of age, he is perhaps too young to be thrown into the deep end and start every week, but opportunities off the bench may be there.

In The Pipeline

Lacey certainly seems like a player United fans can get excited about. Who knows, maybe a first-team debut isn’t too far out of the picture.
