'I've shown glimpses but that's been the problem' – Stoneman

Although the England opener has shown glimpses of promise in his eight Tests so far, he averages only 27.07. He knows the only way to retain his place is to score big in New Zealand

Mark Stoneman, the England opener, is aware his next two Tests against New Zealand could go a long way to deciding his international future as he tries to secure one of England’s troubled top-order positions.Stoneman has shown moments of promise in his eight Tests to date – and the England management like what they have seen – but has failed to convert three fifties into a century. Having played three matches against West Indies last season and then the five Ashes Tests, he averages 27.07 which is very similar to many of the openers tried since Andrew Strauss retired more than five years ago. After facing Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins over five bruising encounters in Australia – literally in the case of the blow on the helmet Stoneman took against Hazlewood in Perth – it would have been understandable if Stoneman had wanted to hightail it out, but instead he spent another six weeks in the country visiting in-laws (his wife is from Australia) and netting with Surrey team-mate Ollie Pope. He only had 10 days back in the UK before heading to New Zealand. With the selectors having quickly named their squad for this tour after the Ashes – “It’s nice to have that bit of faith in you,” Stoneman said – he did not have to fret over his place, but now has two Tests, one of them the potentially demanding experience of a day-night encounter at Eden Park, to persuade those selectors he is worth keeping for the home season against Pakistan and India. He knows the only way to stop the questions is to score big.”I think I’ve got myself on trial really,” he said. “I always put myself under pressure and can be my own worst critic at times. I’m expecting good things of myself, that’s the most important thing.”He used much of his extended stay in Australia to reflect on his Ashes experience. “I sat back and looked through it all and said, right there’s some good stuff there and at other times there doesn’t look like there’s a whole lot wrong, but probably what was wrong there was my thought process,” he said. “I’ve got the shots, I feel I’ve got the technique to make the runs, I’ve just got to make sure I apply it for longer. What I do for three hours for 50 I’ve got to do for six hours for 100 and build on that.”I’ve shown glimpses but that’s been the problem, it’s only been glimpses so far and if I can go on and do some really good stuff here hopefully I can go on to have a successful international career.”It was a series of two halves for Stoneman: before and after the blow on the helmet by Hazlewood at the WACA – one, final, bristling period of pace bowling at the old ground. He was 52 at the time, having survived a barrage of short stuff to reach his second fifty in five innings in the series, but then fell four runs later when he feathered another searing short ball from Starc. At that point he had made 186 runs; his next four innings brought 42.”I think it was just coincidental on the back of that and it was unfortunate I wasn’t able to finish the series stronger,” he said. The challenge ahead in New Zealand will be less brutal than across the Tasman – although Neil Wagner will no doubt test his technique against the short ball – but more about the moving ball. However, despite what is on the line Stoneman is trying to keep a balance amid the pressure of the international game.”Problems start arising when you start living on the peaks and troughs of cricket,” he said. “Just trying to keep things on a general level in life and you work hard at the cricket and at the end of the day it will be what it’ll be.”

Sky Sports reporter reveals Wolves transfer update from inside the club

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has some rather negative news for Wolverhampton Wanderers fans, as the summer window gets even tougher.

Could anyone move to Wolverhampton Wanderers?

According to TEAMtalk, Wolves are looking to bring West Ham United striker Michail Antonio to Molinuex this summer, who has less than a year left on his current £85k-a-week contract at the London Stadium.

Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq had shown an interest in Antonio earlier in the window; however, Steven Gerrard looks to have calmed down his admiration toward the Jamaica international after bringing in former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele on a free transfer.

Nevertheless, Wolves will have to fend off competition from Scottish champions Celtic and Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United for Antonio's signature, according to FootballTransfers.

The report details that a 'small fee' will be required to prize Antonio away from east London and maintains that there may still be some eyes on the 33-year-old from Saudi Arabia.

Antonio has been a productive presence in West Ham's front line in his time at the London Stadium, netting 75 goals and laying on 43 assists in 276 appearances for the club, as per Transfermarkt.

Wolves have been dogged by issues with Financial Fair Play this window that caused now-ex-manager Julen Lopetegui to walk out on the Old Gold close to the start of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign and the Spaniard has subsequently been replaced by former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil, as per Sky Sports.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports reporter Sheth has indicated that Wolves' financial concerns may make the process of doing a deal to bring Antonio to the West Midlands difficult unless West Ham decide to let him leave on a free transfer.

Sheth stated: "I spoke to someone at Wolves yesterday, and they were pouring a little bit of cold water on it. They were saying unless it would be some kind of free transfer, then it's unlikely Wolves would be able to sanction any kind of deal that would require a transfer fee to be involved simply because of all the financial issues that Wolves have got."

What else is happening at Wolverhampton Wanderers?

Wolves face a difficult first assignment under the stewardship of boss O'Neil in their Premier League opener as they prepare to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday amid a backdrop of uncertainty at the club, as per Sky Sports.

In terms of potential arrivals, Manchester City youngster James McAtee is a target for the Old Gold; however, Brighton & Hove Albion, Celtic, Real Sociedad, Southampton, AZ Alkmaar and Sheffield United are all keen on the Englishman, as per The Daily Mail.

Football Insider claim that Wolves are 'expected' to wrap up a deal to sign veteran West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell in the final stretch of the transfer window.

Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos is on the radar of both Wolves and West Ham and could arrive back in the Premier League following a spell at Arsenal earlier in his career, as per The Sun.

Leeds United’s "Unreal" £20m Player Ready To Quit

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier wants to complete a summer departure from Elland Road, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

When did Illan Meslier join Leeds?

The Whites shot-stopper put pen to paper on a permanent deal at Elland Road back in 2020 following a successful loan spell the season before from FC Lorient, and during his three years at the club, he’s gone on to firmly establish himself as number one between the sticks.

In the Premier League last season, the 23-year-old started 34 out of the 38 matches during the reigns of Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia, but upon the arrival of Sam Allardyce, he was dropped to the bench for the final four games of the season and replaced by Joel Robles who has since departed.

The France youth international still has another three years to run on his contract in Yorkshire, but there’s a chance that he could secure an exit before the end of the ongoing window having caught the eye of several clubs in the top-flight following relegation to the Championship.

Chelsea are the side to have been the most heavily linked after the player himself publicly admitted that he would be open to joining them, but Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are also believed to have held an interest, and it seems as if he feels like he’s destined to achieve bigger things.

Is Illan Meslier leaving Leeds?

According to Football Insider, Meslier is "keen to quit" Leeds this summer, though it is worth noting that "no offers have yet been made" by any potential suitors.

The LS11 star "does not want to play" in the second tier next season and is therefore looking for a move elsewhere, but with the above-mentioned clubs having since all recruited in their goalkeeping departments, he may have to "explore" his options in Spain, Italy or France. The Whites view their regular as a "sellable asset" and have placed a £20-25m price tag on his head.

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Whilst Meslier only managed to keep five clean sheets last season in the Premier League, Leeds equally weren’t helped by their struggles in the backline and the goalkeeper receiving three man-of-the-match awards, via WhoScored, showed the individual impact that he had despite failing to avoid relegation.

The Lorient native ranked in the 93rd percentile for defensive actions outside of his area and the 87th percentile for crosses stopped, showing that he’s not afraid to leave his net and be commanding in the box to clear the danger, alongside making some “unreal” saves, as hailed by reporter Graham Smyth.

The Whites’ £30k-per-week earner also helped the side to achieve promotion when he was on loan so already knows what it takes to compete at the top end of the table in the second tier, meaning that he could be a perfect character to keep in the building as Daniel Farke looks to get the club back to the top-flight at the first time of asking, however, with Karl Darlow now signed from Newcastle, Meslier's days in Yorkshire could be numbered.

Saurashtra announce Uthappa signing for 2017-18 season

The move ends the senior batsman’s 15-year-long association with the Karnataka team

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Aug-2017The Saurashtra Cricket Association [SCA] has announced signing Robin Uthappa as the team’s professional player for the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy season, although the senior batsman is yet to confirm the development. ESPNcricinfo understands Uthappa, 31, does not wish to preempt the announcement before the paperwork has been processed and sent by the BCCI to the SCA, after an earlier deal with Kerala, which he had been on the verge of signing, did not go through. The SCA, though, has issued a statement welcoming Uthappa. “SCA feels confident that Robin will add strength to [the] strong Ranji Team of Saurashtra with his vast experience and commendable performance,” the association’s media manager, Himanshu Shah, said in a press release. “Robin Uthappa has completed all necessary formalities to BCCI, Saurashtra Cricket Association and Karnataka State Cricket Association.”In any event, the move has brought the curtain down on Uthappa’s 15-year association with Karnataka. He led Karnataka to the final of the 2009-10 Ranji Trophy, where Mumbai snatched a six-run win. Uthappa was also part of the Karnataka side that did the double-treble, winning the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Last season, however, he had a middling run, tallying 328 runs from seven Ranji Trophy games, with only one fifty-plus score. Uthappa was subsequently left out of Karnataka’s quarter-final clash against Tamil Nadu, which the latter won.Karnataka State Cricket Association secretary Sudhakar Rao said the association had tried to persuade Uthappa to stay on. “We had two meetings, but he stuck to his words. He said he wanted a change. We can’t stop him,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “He is a senior player and he wants to go. So, we issued an NoC (No Objection Certificate) and wished him all the best for his comeback to the national side.”Uthappa has scored 8793 runs from 130 first-class matches at an average of 41.28, including 21 hundreds. He has turned out for India in 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is.

Afridi's magic is too much for Glamorgan

A partnership of 95 between Lewis McManus and George Bailey, and a spell of 4 for 20 in four overs by leg-spinner Shahid Afridi were enough to give Hampshire the perfect start to their T20 Blast campaign

But Michael Hogan finally broke the partnership as keeper Chris Cooke claimed the catch off the edge of Vince’s bat, the batsman having hit 31 from 15 balls, including seven fours.Hampshire’s scoring rate slowed noticeably after the wicket, which in turn brought about a second, Michael Hogan bowling Rilee Rossouw in the sixth over for 18, as Hampshire reached the end of the Powerplay on 59-2.A third wicket soon followed as Michael Carberry swiped Marchant de Lange to keeper Cooke for 4. Sean Ervine followed three overs later, as he found Marchant de Lange at long-off from the bowling of spinner Andrew Salter for 6, Hampshire struggling at 70 for 4 at the halfway mark. But they recovered thanks to Bailey and McManus, who guided them to 102-4 after 15 overs, before the latter struck two consecutive sixes off Colin Ingram in the sixteenth over. He dealt de Lange the same treatment in the following over before swiping him for four as they reached 128 for 4. The 95-run partnership was broken by a magnificent catch in the cover by Ingram off Graham Wagg as Hampshire finished their innings on 167 for 5, Michael Hogan finishing with figures of 2 for 25.Glamorgan got off to the worst possible start, losing two wickets in the first over for three runs. David Lloyd edged to Sean Ervine off Reece Topley from the very first ball of the innings, before Ingram drove to Gareth Berg in the covers.Glamorgan recovered to 43 for 2 at the end of the Powerplay before Afridi struck twice in two balls, bowling Aneurin Donald for 25 before Kiran Carlson was trapped lbw for 0. Jacques Rudolph was the fifth man to fall, the third to Afridi, as he drove to skipper Vince for 18 in the ninth over at 47 for 5.Cooke and Graham Wagg had struck up a fifty partnership by the time Glamorgan reached the 100 mark in the fourteenth over, still requiring 64 of the last six overs. But Afridi struck for a fourth time, in the fifteenth over, as Cooke pulled to Michael Carberry on the mid-wicket boundary.Wagg reached his half-century before he was caught by James Vince off Mason Crane for 50 as Glamorgan were 114 for 7, still requiring 54 off the remaining four overs. De Lange quickly followed, bowled by Topley after crashing a four off his first ball.Needing 27 to win from the final six deliveries, Timm van der Gugten drove to Rossouw at long-on off Gareth Berg, leaving Hampshire to claim a 22-run victory.

Wells' century helps Sussex get over Wright shock

Luke Wells continued his impressive start to the season with a second successive century at Hove as Sussex delighted their new skipper Chris Nash by dominating the first day against Worcestershire

ECB Reporters Network02-Jun-2017
ScorecardLuke Wells continued his impressive start to the season with a second successive century at Hove as Sussex dominated the first day against Worcestershire. The visitors, who have won their first four games in the Specsavers County Championship, employed eight bowlers after putting Sussex in but Wells led a spirited response by a side still coming to terms with Luke Wright’s decision to step down as captain on Wednesday and who have lost three of their four matches so far.The left-hander followed up his career-best 258 at Hove a fortnight ago with an unbeaten 139 while Harry Finch (82) and Stiaan van Zyl (54) gave him excellent support as Sussex ended the first day on 339 for 3.Worcestershire bowled tidily enough but Finch blunted their efforts to make early inroads by compiling his highest Championship score before Wells and van Zyl took full toll of a tiring attack later in the day.Wright’s replacement Chris Nash has struggled this season but looked to have found some form as he helped Finch negate the new ball threat before tamely picking out mid-wicket when he mistimed a pull off Joe Leach on 22.But that was Worcestershire’s only success before lunch as Finch and Wells, cautiously at first before picking up the pace in the afternoon, added 125 in 35 overs for the second wicket.Finch’s 50 came off 90 balls and having made played few false shots it was a surprise when Josh Tongue drew him forward at the start of a new spell and found the edge to slip after Finch had struck 11 fours.Luke Wells helped Sussex get over the shock of Luke Wright’s resignation•Getty Images

But as the ball softened and neither swung or deviated much off the seam, Wells and van Zyl settled in to put on 137 in 37 overs either side of tea. Wells took two off Nathan Lyon, the Australia off-spinner, to reach the 15th hundred of his career and once past the landmark he went on the offensive, just as he had done against Durham. One short-armed jab from a perfectly respectable Leach delivery outside off stump that whistled first-bounce to the mid-wicket boundary was the shot of a player in prime form while South African van Zyl looked just as assured until he was bowled off an inside edge by Ed Barnard just after Worcestershire had taken the new ball.Wright pulled Barnard for six to get off the mark and a further four boundaries in an unbeaten 27 while the hugely impressive Wells has so far faced 255 balls and hit 20 fours.

Arsenal On The Verge Of Signing "Exceptional" £39m Star

Arsenal are now on the verge of completing a move for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Is Jurrien Timber joining Arsenal?

According to a report from The Mirror, Timber believes he has an agreement in place with Ajax that will allow him to make the switch to the Emirates Stadium, having turned his back on a move to Manchester United last summer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed Arsenal are set to make another offer for the Ajax star, having already had one bid knocked back, as the player himself considers the project "perfect" for his aspirations.

Mikel Arteta is said to view the 22-year-old as a "priority target for this window", and the Gunners boss is now very close to completing a deal, according to a new update from Plettenberg.

Taking to Twitter, the Sky Sports reporter claimed the defender is on the "verge" of completing a switch to north London, as he "wants to join" and the verbal agreement is now "done."

Finalising the move now all comes down to the second official offer, and an "agreement is expected" for a fee of around €40m – €45m (£34m – £39m) plus bonus payments, which Plettenberg believes would be a "good deal for all parties."

"Jurrien Timber, on verge to join Arsenal! Bayern is not involved at this stage. The player wants to join Arsenal. Verbal agreement is done. All depends on the second official offer now. Agreement expected between €40-45m transfer fee + bonus payments. Would be a good deal for all parties."

What position does Jurrien Timber play?

The 5 foot 10 defender has most commonly been deployed at centre-back throughout his career so far, however, he is versatile and has made 49 appearances at right-back, another area in which Arteta is reportedly keen to strengthen.

Football Scout Jacek Kulig has hailed the Ajax academy graduate as "exceptional", as he makes up for his lack of height with his "understanding of the game, anticipation, pace and ball skills."

Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber.

Last season, he averaged 1.2 interceptions per game in the Eredivisie, the joint-second highest figure in the squad, which indicates that Kulig is correct in his assessment about the Utrecht-born defender being able to read the game very well.

Over the past year, the Utrecht-born defender has also showcased his passing ability, ranking in the 99th percentile for passes attempted and his pass completion rate per 90, when compared to his positional peers playing at a similar level. Timber has proven that he is more than capable of making the step up to the Premier League, and it is exciting news that the deal now appears to be very close to completion.

Taskin eager to make Test debut

Taskin Ahmed, 21, is likely to make his Test debut and lead a Bangladesh attack that, for the past eight years, has been the least-experienced department in the team

Another away Test series brings another fresh pace-bowling group in the Bangladesh line-up. Taskin Ahmed, 21, is likely to make his Test debut and lead an attack that, for the past eight years, has been the least-experienced department in the team.As at Wellington’s Basin Reserve where Taskin, Rubel Hossain, Subashis Roy and Kamrul Islam Rabbi gleefully bowled on a green surface next to the first Test pitch, they have regularly encountered friendly conditions in West Indies, Zimbabwe, England and on the previous tour of New Zealand. But apart from Robiul Islam in Zimbabwe in 2013, none could match their skills to the conditions on offer.Rubel has played the most during this period but never been penetrative enough, while Kamrul – who made his debut in the home series against England last year – and the uncapped Subashis have never played a Test abroad. The trend has been to pick rookies, who don’t get many opportunities in home Tests but offer promise in a season or two of first-class cricket. Once someone does well in challenging conditions at home, they are quickly brought up to the highest level and given the responsibility to use their skills in helpful conditions overseas. After spending much of Tuesday bowling on the centre pitches rather than the nets, Taskin could not help but smile when asked about his excitement at bowling on such a pitch on his Test debut.”The bowlers are very happy seeing the wicket,” Taskin said. “It is a rather green and hard surface. I am gearing up to bowl there. We have some good fast bowlers, and we have shown in the recent past that we can bowl well. If we can bowl to our potential, it will be a good game.”While Taskin’s excitement is reasonable, his inexperience in the longer format is a major concern, especially for someone who has broken down twice in the last three years. Only a few months ago, in October, Bangladesh’s coach, Chandika Hathurusingha , warned the selectors not to pick him in Tests. After chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that Taskin would be fast-tracked into the Test team in England, Hathurusingha responded: “Has he played any four-day cricket? So you think people can do magic straight away? No. They are humans. If you haven’t played four-day cricket in your entire life, standing four days on the field and bowling 15 overs is entirely new for him. I don’t want to destroy somebody’s career.”Khaled Mahmud, Bangladesh’s manager at the time and since inducted into the selection committee after it was revamped last year, had also backed Minhajul’s strategy. While Taskin’s pace has been more than useful for Bangladesh since his international debut in 2014, he played the last of his 10 first-class matches in 2013.But Taskin was not focusing on his lack of bowling volume, which he believes can be covered by the work he does in the nets, while preparing himself to play in the longer format.”I have had to work hard to come to the Test side,” he said. “The support staff and coaches at the BCB really helped me get to this stage. I trained in a specific programme, which included building my bowling workload in the last 18-24 months. I am in the Test squad because I have become fitter, and I don’t want to stop after just one game. I want to make a regular place in the team.”I am not too worried about bowling volume. I don’t think my lack of first-class matches will be a factor. I am only thinking of taking care of myself off the field, so that I can give my all on it. I have bowled 12-15 overs in the nets on many days, with the new and old ball. I am learning how to swing the red ball. I believe that I will become a better Test player with every game I play.”As a regular in shorter formats and given Rubel’s poor numbers despite being the most experienced pace bowler – he averages 75.90 and his last Test came in 2015 – Taskin would automatically be elevated as the leader of the bowling attack if he does play in Wellington. That too on his Test debut, and his first long-form game in nearly four years.
