Precisamos atender a Seleção? Sim.

Worth far more than Doak: Liverpool have hit gold on "special" academy gem

Liverpool are an efficient club. Some would say circumspect, but FSG operate within their parameters and know that their formula perpetuates success.

It can be frustrating, at times, but you need only look back at the Premier League’s winding road over the past decade to note the fragilities and dysfunctions of some of Anfield’s biggest rivals, and how Jurgen Klopp’s side have been perched in the ascendency for the lion’s share of this time-frame.

Arne Slot was met with a lack of first-team investment after taking on the impossible task of succeeding his larger-than-life predecessor, but Liverpool are flying at the top of the Premier League and in confident positions in the Champions League and Carabao Cup too.

Whatever FSG are doing, it’s working. And this is why Liverpool’s willingness to let Ben Doak leave – for the right price – isn’t a disaster, but a calculated decision.

Why Liverpool may sell Doak

As per The Times’ Paul Joyce, Liverpool have rejected bids from Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace for Doak this month, worth £16m and £15m respectively.

Liverpool would welcome their talented winger back to the club at the end of the season but the fact that they have responded to bids with their £30m valuation makes a convincing comment on their selling stance.

For £30m, Liverpool would hit the jackpot and then some, for he has only played half a term of Championship football, and talented he may be, the Scotland international is not so unexpendable that any tentative raised hands are shot down instantly.

Ben Doak in action for Middlesbrough

This is conjecture, but it’s curious that Liverpool should be open to cashing in given that Mohamed Salah is out of contract at the end of the season and Federico Chiesa has also been linked with a move away. Might this portend Salah’s renewal?

In any case, it’s a shining endorsement of Liverpool’s academy scene. Doak might be the cream of the current Kirkby crop after signing from Celtic several years ago, but some existing homegrown stars are actually worth more than him.

Of course, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the cream of the crop, but Curtis Jones is also flying after years of on-off flashes of prominence in the first team.

Jones' Liverpool career

Jones made his senior debut back in 2019 as a 17-year-old, though it was a year later that he decried his quality across Merseyside, scoring a sumptuous curling strike as Liverpool beat Everton in the FA Cup.

Said to have “all the attributes of a top player” by former captain Jordan Henderson, the 23-year-old is now proving that support with his dynamic performances, capable across a range of midfield roles.

He’s also been praised for his “truly special” quality on the ball by one analyst, and will be delighted to note that consistency has entered his game this season, on course for his best individual campaign yet in the English top flight.

He’s flying this term, backing his potency up with a 95% pass completion rate in the Premier League, also averaging 1.3 tackles per game and winning 53% of his duels, as per Sofascore.

The sky’s the limit, with Jones proving that he can play a fundamental part in Liverpool’s future under Slot. Doak is the talk of the academy at the moment and touted for big things, but Jones has always slipped under the radar somewhat – now, he’s shining, with a market value that reflects his gains.

Why Slot has hit gold with Jones

Jones’ improvements over the past couple of years do provide food for thought: Doak is already performing at a high level and has not even bid farewell to his teenage years.

Ben Doak for Liverpool.

But Jones’ good fortunes have been a product of hard work and tenacity, overcoming obstacles to play a key part in Slot’s system this year.

Pundit Micah Richards praised the Liverpool star’s “extraordinary” England debut in November after he earned the call-up due to his presence in Slot’s team. Jones has featured 22 times this season, scoring five goals, adding three assists and starting nine times in the Premier League.

His intelligence off the ball is astounding, shifting through the lines to latch onto Trent’s exquisite postage, Salah’s sublime through ball, underlines his happy marriage in this newlook Liverpool team, for Slot is a pedant in the best sense of the word, driven toward fine-tuning tactical wiring to ensure that Liverpool stay ahead of the curve.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 1% of Premier League central midfielders this season for pass completion, the top 2% for passes attempted, the top 11% for progressive passes and the top 14% for tackles per 90, perfectly illustrating his passing prowess and the security that he provides.

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones celebrates

It’s no surprise that Jones’ market value has risen exponentially over the past few years, with Transfermarkt recording his market value to sit at £37m. Only in March 2023, Jones’s reported price tag totalled £14m.

Doak might be worth £30m, but he’s not yet eclipsed Jones, and if Liverpool were to cash in on the latter this year, you can be sure that Richard Hughes would balk at that £37m, demand much more.

Liverpool star Curtis Jones celebrates

Jones has so much scope for growth and has actually proven under Slot’s wing this season that he can adopt clinical patterns and weave them into the fabric of his mechanics.

Liverpool’s Dutch coach has inherited a brilliant team. Though fans generally wouldn’t put Jones in the top bracket, he’s proving that Alexander-Arnold doesn’t stand alone as Anfield’s academy superstar, with his best days still, perhaps, to come.

Mohammad Abbas raises Hampshire's stakes, before Mohammad Amir rips back initiative for Gloucestershire

Mohammad Abbas celebrated his first LV= Insurance County Championship five-wicket haul of the season but Gloucestershire’s ripsnorting evening session snatched the momentum from Hampshire.Hampshire looked set for a first-innings lead in excess of 200 after Abbas ripped through the visitors with a textbook showcase of line and length bowling with 6 for 45. But Ajeet Singh Dale and Jared Warner added 55 for the last wicket to reduce the deficit to 163.And then Mohammad Amir continued the Pakistani bowling dominance with 3 for 22, with Ryan Higgins also pilfering a scalp, to leave Hampshire 28 for 4, with their lead 191.To start the day, Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott had failed to reach the bonus point for 350 runs despite a spirited morning effort, with Graeme van Buuren pinning Abbott lbw and Dawson flailing to deep extra cover – Hampshire all out for 342.Abbas came into his own with an incredible seven-over spell of 4 for 16. Abbas’ second over was an Ageas Bowl classic. Marcus Harris left the first ball and pumped the second for three before the overseas signing found George Scott’s tentative outside-edge behind. James Bracey was shelled at third slip first ball, played and missed the second before he finally tickled behind – Abbas coming over, around and then over the wicket again, a plan hatched by Keith Barker during their meeting last year.Hampshire were now in the box seat and relentlessly hunted down further wickets. Miles Hammond was the next to feather Abbas to keeper Ben Brown before van Buuren was leg before on the cusp of lunch.Abbas’ spell initiated murmurs in the Hampshire dressing room that it had produced more heat than other efforts in recent weeks due to compatriots Amir and Naseem Shah watching on.Marcus Harris ended the procession to Abbas by loosely driving Abbott to second slip and Tom Lace had his off stump left lopsided by James Fuller.Ryan Higgins countered with an entertaining 46 in conjunction with Dom Goodman before taking on Felix Organ one too many times to top-edge to deep midwicket. Abbas then completed his five-wicket haul with a short ball into Goodman’s ribs, which was gloved through to Brown. Amir followed two balls later with a sharp edge to second slip – Abbas celebrating by running down to his friend and laying his hands on his shoulder in a consolidatory manner. The hosts debated whether to enforce the follow-on or not at the fall of that ninth wicket, only for Dale and Warner to put on 55 – the highest partnership of the innings. Dale, against his former county, laughed at his No.11 billing with a brisk 36. Organ eventually got Warner to push to short leg to bowl Gloucestershire out for 179.Gloucestershire’s glee was increased as, in 11 evening overs, Amir had Organ jabbing to the cordon second ball, before Ian Holland fell in the following over – caught behind attempting to leave Higgins.Abbott and Abbas were lbw in successive balls to Amir coming around the wicket, as Hampshire saw their openers and tail disappear in a little over 45 minutes of havoc.

Arsenal could rue selling £9m "monster" who’s now rivalling Xhaka

Since Mikel Arteta entered Arsenal Football Club he has been ruthless with his decision-making. He takes no prisoners, that’s for sure.

After one too many misdemeanours, the Spaniard removed the captaincy from Pierre Emerick-Aubayemany and subsequently told him to leave the club.

There’s also the goalkeeper situation. Aaron Ramsdale was fine. He had some great moments in an Arsenal shirt. Remember that jaw-dropping stop to deny James Maddison’s free-kick against Leicester? Alas, Arteta had seen enough. In came David Raya.

The way he’s now phasing out Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus is also pretty ruthless but they aren’t good enough. Let’s be honest, here.

One of the more peculiar moves during Arteta’s reign was the freedom with which Granit Xhaka left the Emirates Stadium.

Why Granit Xhaka left Arsenal behind

The redemption arc of Xhaka’s Arsenal career was a sight to behold. This was a player who cupped his ear and tossed the captain’s armband on the floor during the reign of Unai Emery.

There was surely no way of coming back from that. Well, the Swiss defied the doubters, defied all critics and is now seen as a club icon for his performances under Arteta.

It was during the 2022/23 season that the midfielder shone brightest, scoring a career-best nine goals and also registering seven assists across all competitions. He had quickly become one of the finest central players in the Premier League.

However, he wanted to go and in swooped Beyer Leverkusen who snapped Xhaka up for a measly fee of £21.4m. Why did he go? Well, it was to seek a new challenge at a late stage in his career.

Since then, the now 32-year-old has enjoyed a fabulous time of it. He won the Bundesliga unbeaten last season and reached the final of the Europa League. He was among the Ballon d’Or nominees too.

Xhaka ended up ranking in 16th place, ahead of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Declan Rice.

Did Arsenal miss him last term? Perhaps. That being said, club-record signing Rice did a pretty decent job in his stead, being named in the PFA Team of the Year for 2023/24.

That said, will the Gunners miss another midfielder? Quite possibly, for this young Frenchman is now ranking pretty closely to Xhaka in certain metrics.

When Arsenal sold a "monster in the making"

The 20th June 2020. It’s a poignant date in Arsenal’s history. An unsuspecting game with Brighton during that dreaded COVID season happened to alter the timeline of many careers as Arsenal lost at the Amex Stadium.

Berno Leno suffered a serious knee injury that led to Emiliano Martinez’s triumphant rise to become the best goalkeeper in the world. It was also Matteo Guendouzi’s last match in an Arsenal shirt.

Visibly angry at the challenge from fellow countryman Neal Maupay that hurt Leno, he somehow avoided punishment despite grabbing him by the throat.

Arteta had seen him enough, though, and that summer he was being sold in a £9m move to Marseille. Guendouzi left having flattered to deceive. He had mass potential but his attitude problems – as we saw in that clash with the Seagulls – often got the better of him.

Matteo-Guendouzi-in-action-for-Marseille

Moving back to his homeland after initially being signed from Lorient, the France international did so having played on 82 occasions for Arsenal.

Described as a “monster in the making” by scout Jacek Kulig, the now 25-year-old is now impressing in Serie A for Lazio alongside Nuno Tavares. Remember him?

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

After a summer move, Guendouzi has played 14 times in which he’s scored once and registered a solitary assist. But, it’s his Xhaka-like qualities that are going under the radar.

Indeed, as per FBRef, the former Arsenal man ranks among the very best Europe has to offer for progressive passes. Compared to players in Europe’s top five leagues this season, he sits in fifth place for that metric with 96.

He sits just ahead of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi (91) and only just behind Joshua Kimmich (126) who ranks first and Xhaka (125) who sits second in the listings.

So, are there many other similarities between the two midfielders? Let’s take a look.

Let’s be honest. Xhaka is quite evidently the better football but it’s clear that there are plenty of similarities between the two players.

Arteta wasn’t to know but in a parallel universe, perhaps Guendouzi was the long-term heir all along? From a passing point of view, very little separates them and they also make a similar number of tackles per 90 minutes.

As data analyst Ben Mattinson once said, the now Lazio ace is a great “what could’ve been” player.

Shades of Rodri: Liverpool in the race for "incredible" Gravenberch rival

Not many Liverpool fans could’ve anticipated the immediate impact that Arne Slot would’ve had at Anfield after his summer appointment.

The Dutchman had huge boots to fill after the departure of beloved boss Jürgen Klopp, who stepped down from the role after nearly nine years at the helm.

The German won every major honour during his time in England, which also included their first-ever Premier League title along with yet another Champions League triumph.

Slot has taken to life on Merseyside like a duck to water, winning 14 out of his 16 matches in charge, only losing to Nottingham Forest whilst drawing to fellow title challengers Arsenal.

Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz have been two of the players who have been on fire at the top end of the pitch, registering a total of 21 combined goals and assists in the first 11 outings.

However, one player has taken his game to the next level, cementing himself as a regular starter under the 46-year-old.

Ryan Gravenberch’s stats for Liverpool in 2024/25

Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch joined the Reds in a £34.2m deal from Bayern Munich during the summer of 2023 – providing much-needed depth to the heart of Klopp’s side.

However, he was never utilised as a regular starter under the former boss, only starting 12 times and often behind Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch

The appointment of compatriot Slot has seen a huge shift in his fortunes, being named in the starting eleven in every Premier League outing – playing a crucial role in the Reds’ early season form.

Gravenberch has achieved a pass accuracy of 89% whilst winning 70% of the tackles that he’s entered since the start of the campaign.

He’s been the perfect deep-lying option for Slot’s 4-3-3 system, often sitting in doing the dirty work and allowing the players ahead of him to create carnage in the final third.

However, he may struggle to maintain his starting place should the hierarchy complete a statement signing during the upcoming transfer window.

Ryan Gravenberch for Liverpool

Liverpool targeting a move for their own Rodri

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are battling Arsenal over a potential January move for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Swedish midfielder Hugo Larsson.

The 20-year-old has endured a rapid rise in recent months with the Bundesliga side, featuring ten times so far this season, scoring twice from the centre of the park.

The report goes on to state that boss Slot is targeting reinforcements to his midfield despite his impressive start to life at Anfield, looking for an upgrade on Endo, who could be set to leave.

Larsson has been compared to Manchester City ace and Ballon d’Or winner Rodri by the Bundesliga’s website – a real high heap of praise for such a young talent:

However, when delving into their stats from their respective divisions last season, the comparison isn’t that far-fetched with the Reds getting themselves a hugely talented superstar should they complete a deal.

The “incredible” Swede, as dubbed by Sport1-journalist Christopher Michel, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists, but did register more successful tackles – a crucial figure for a ball-winning player.

Larsson also averaged more interceptions and clearances per 90, having the ability to add a different dimension to Slot’s side with the youngster having the potential to get even better under his guidance.

Whilst it’s unknown how much the star will cost this winter, his talent is evident for all to see, with this just the start of his professional career at the top level.

The Anfield may face tough competition from Arsenal for his signature, but if they are to further bolster their title credentials this campaign, a deal for the Swede is a must this January. Gravenberch may have to watch out…

The key wicket was that Chamari Athapaththu who fell for 33 off 31 deliveries to Belinda Vakarewa who had started the innings with a maiden before being taken 14 in the space of four deliveries by Devine.Just when a batter was threatening to see them home they fell. Heather Graham was lbw to Carey and Marizanne Kapp skied a return catch to Molly Strano.Rachel Priest had dominated Hurricanes innings with a half-century that included three sixes but the rest of the batting struggled after a promising powerplay. From 1 for 90 in the 14th over they could only manage another 47 runs. The spin pair of Lilly Mills and Alana King again combined effectively to take 4 for 47 from their eight overs. Mills removed Richa Ghosh and Mignon du Preez in the space of four balls.

Afghanistan the favourites, but Scotland have momentum

Big Picture

Coming into the second stage of a T20 World Cup already means you’ve had quite a journey, from succeeding in the qualifiers against tough competition, and then succeeding again in the first round against tougher competition, before you get to mix with the big boys.Afghanistan know that journey, having been part of the Associate cricket world not too long ago. Scotland have lived that journey, and now find themselves with a chance to make a further statement if they can beat the team that’s been the poster child for rising through the ranks. While Afghanistan will be the favoured side in this contest, especially because of their bowling strength, Scotland have the edge in preparation. They’ve had three games to test their resilience as well as flex their might, and are coming into the Super 12s as primed as can be.Related

On the other hand, though Afghanistan did play two warm-up games, they haven’t had the easiest preparation, and had visa issues before the squad assembled too. At the back of the minds of all the squad members will be the volatile situation back home. Whether that becomes a burden that stifles, or hardens their resolve to provide some cheer to fans in Afghanistan in grim times, we’ll know soon.

In the spotlight

He was appointed captain in rather chaotic circumstances, when Rashid Khan stepped down minutes after Afghanistan’s squad was announced, but Mohammad Nabi was a leader – and former captain in any case – in the group earlier too. He was on point as bowler and captain in their second warm-up game, against West Indies, bowling his four overs in a row first up and proving to be nigh unplayable. Nabi bowled 22 dot balls out of 24, and conceded only two singles, taking 3 for 2. In Sharjah, where spinners have received purchase, he could be crucial with ball, with his power-hitting and his on-field generalship.Josh Davey has been excellent with the new ball for Scotland•ICC/Getty Images

Josh Davey has been Scotland’s enforcer and controller both, so far in the T20 World Cup. The right-arm seamer has hit his rhythm well, troubling batters with accuracy and movement. He hasn’t always had a smooth ride in a career that began in 2010, but at 31, he has the experience without having lost his zing, to hit the sweet spot of effectiveness. With Afghanistan’s batting being top-heavy, Davey’s overs up front have the potential to give Scotland good leverage in the contest if he can strike early. He’s already taken eight wickets in three games, conceding runs at less than a run a ball.

Team news

Afghanistan’s opening combination of Hazratullah Zazai and Mohammad Shahzad showed how devastating they could be when a team missed its lengths, as West Indies found out in the warm-up game between the two. Their pairing at the top is what Afghanistan will rely on while batting. The bowling is already well manned with Nabi, Rashid and Mujeeb ur Rahman almost guaranteeing 12 high-quality overs.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Hazratullah Zazai, 2 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 3 Rahmanullah Gurbaz, 4 Najibullah Zadran, 5 Asghar Afghan, 6 Mohammad Nabi (capt), 7 Karim Janat, 8 Gulbadin Naib, 9 Rashid Khan, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Naveen ul HaqScotland’s progress so far has been of the best kind, because it’s not been overly dependent on one single individual. Different people have stood up at different times, which gives the team a well-rounded look. They will look to Davey, the pacy Brad Wheal and the canny Mark Watt to rein Afghanistan in, while the likes of Richie Berrington and George Munsey will have to marshal the batting against a potent attack.Scotland (probable): 1 George Munsey, 2 Kyle Coetzer (capt), 3 Matthew Cross (wk), 4 Richie Berrington, 5 Calum MacLeod, 6 Michael Leask, 7 Chris Greaves, 8 Mark Watt, 9 Josh Davey, 10 Safyaan Sharif, 11 Brad Wheal

Pitch and conditions

While the pitches at Sharjah, during the IPL and the first round of the T20 World Cup were slow and difficult to get big scores on, the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka a day before this one, suggested that this was not always the norm. If the pitch does play better, the conditions swing towards batters because of the small boundaries. This is a night game, so dew might also come into play more.

Stats and trivia

  • Calum MacLeod once took 49 runs off Rashid Khan in an ODI – the second most any batter has taken against Rashid in an ODI. MacLeod had faced just 31 balls from Rashid in that game.
  • In six T20Is played between these two teams so far, Afghanistan have won each time, though they haven’t played each other in this format since 2016.

Quotes

“The fans are really waiting for the games because the only happiness in Afghanistan is cricket. If we do well in the tournament and win games, there will be lots of smiles on faces.”
.”Just because we’re now into the Super 12s, I don’t think that changes much for us. I think we’ll come and play the aggressive type of cricket we want to play”
