Dhoni-Mustafizur collision a test of rule interpretations

A collision between MS Dhoni and debutant Mustafizur Rahman during Bangladesh’s victory over India will test the umpires’ interpretation of events and the way ICC reacts to it

Sidharth Monga19-Jun-20150:50

‘Collision with Mustafizur a typical street clash’ – Dhoni

A collision between MS Dhoni and debutant Mustafizur Rahman during Bangladesh’s victory over India will test the umpires’ interpretation of events and the way ICC reacts to it. In the 25th over of India’s chase, Dhoni ran into Mustafizur while taking a single, and appeared to shove him out of his way with his forearm. On the surface it is worthy of sanction under the ICC code of conduct, but it is necessary to examine the circumstances around it before deciding if it was “inappropriate and deliberate” contact.Mustafizur is a left-arm quick. In the 25th over of India’s innings, he bowled from over the wicket to Dhoni, who pushed the ball to mid-off and set off for a single. Mustafizur didn’t go straight in his follow-through, ambled across the pitch – neither to field the ball nor to get back to collect a throw – then appeared to glance at where the batsmen were and then moved ever so slightly into the line Dhoni was travelling. To his right Dhoni had Suresh Raina – the batting partner at the time – squeezing him, and if Dhoni was to run around from the left, he would risking running on the pitch and a run-out because of a bigger, circuitous route. Dhoni held his hand out immediately after running into Mustafizur, but also looked complainingly at the umpire. The bowler had to go off the field, and thus could bowl only 9.2 overs on a smashing debut, still managing to take five wickets with a well-disguised off-cutter.”Well, I thought he will move, he thought I will move and both of us ended up colliding because I had to take the closest path possible getting to the other end,” Dhoni said of the incident. “If I am going around the bowler, more often than not they’ll get the batsman out. So either I should have moved to the right or he should have moved to the left but both of us thought maybe the other guy will, but we ended up with a, what you can say, a typical kind of a street clash. Thankfully he didn’t get injured, and I didn’t get injured.”Dhoni didn’t suggest Mustafizur was trying to gain any advantage by coming in his way, and on his part Mustafizur communicated through the Bangladesh media manager that he should have got out of the way. It is quite possible that the 19-year-old is not aware of it, but he does seem to have a habit of doing this. Earlier in the innings, again with a single to mid-off, Mustafizur went from his over-the-wicket mark across the pitch, seemed to glance at the batsman, and then found himself in the way of Rohit Sharma. This resulted in a softer collision, but Rohit raised his finger immediately to let Mustafizur know he was in the wrong. The interpretation of the umpires here is important and interesting. They have obviously not seen Mustafizur as being in violation of Law 42, which deals with unfair play. Law 42.5 says: “(a) It is for either one of the umpires to decide whether any distraction or obstruction is wilful or not.(b) If either umpire considers that a fielder has caused or attempted to cause such a distraction or obstruction, he shall immediately call and signal Dead ball and inform the other umpire of the reason for the call.”There are other penalties involved, including five extra runs and the accrual of runs already completed and initiated, and the batsmen’s being allowed to decide who will take strike, but the key point here is that such a judgment has to be made immediately and on the field. That they didn’t make any such decision during the game suggests they didn’t consider it a wilful distraction or obstruction, which makes it even more intriguing as to how the match referee sees Dhoni’s act. If, in the view of the umpires, the bowler didn’t wilfully obstruct or distract the batsman, was the batsman within his rights to shove the bowler out of the way so as to keep running in a straight line? That Raina was squeezing Dhoni from his right could be a consideration, too. It’s now up to the Playing Control Team – the match referee and the four umpires – to decide if there needs to be any sanction, but this is not the only incident they will be interested in. Bangladesh fielders tried to run Shikhar Dhawan out and appealed for it when the batsman was walking off having seen the hastily raised finger of the umpire Rod Tucker while in fact the wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim had dropped the catch. Dhoni’s eventual dismissal drew an angry reaction, which is likely to have resulted from the collision. Later in the innings, the umpires took captain Mashrafe Mortaza and Tamim Iqbal aside and were seen making “keep-quiet” gestures with their fingers on their lips. There was also an instance when the umpires had to tell off the Indian substitutes, who made quite a few visits to the middle, sometimes only with a message.

Lyon, O'Keefe spin out Tasmania

Scorecard Nathan Lyon and Steve O’Keefe took six wickets between them and restricted Tasmania to 237 on the first day at Bankston Oval in Sydney.Having opted to bat, Tasmania opener Dom Michael was run-out by Sean Abbott for just 1 in the second over. Jordan Silk and Ed Cowan then put on a 84-run stand for the second wicket as a remedy but neither could move on and make a big score. O’Keefe was especially difficult to score off with figures of 18.5-6-37-3.Lyon had Silk caught behind for 54 and O’Keefe removed Cowan for 31. Abbott returned to pick up Alex Doolan, the Tasmania captain, for 20 and the score had slipped to 122 for 5. Ben Dunk was left to handle a rearguard but his 136-ball 39 did not receive much support. Tasmania’s second-best partnership of the innings of 42 runs came for the final wicket between Andrew Fekete and Jackson Bird.New South Wales’ Ryan Carters and Scott Henry faced one over each to put on 4 runs before stumps.

Manish Pandey hails IPL impact for call-up

Manish Pandey believes that playing in the IPL helped him “get used to the pressure of the game” and was a major factor in him earning a maiden national call-up

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Oct-20144:45

Being consistent is the reason for this call – Pandey

On May 21, 2009, a 20-year-old Manish Pandey, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, pummelled a Deccan Chargers bowling attack which included Ryan Harris, Andrew Symonds and Pragyan Ojha, as he went on to become the first Indian centurion in the competition. While Pandey’s form in the IPL remained consistent – he has scored 1346 runs combined for four teams – a national call-up did not immediately materialise. But when it eventually did, more than five years later, Pandey was quick to praise the positive impact that the IPL had on his career.”It [IPL] definitely helped. As a batsman, you look to be consistent every game and win matches for your team,” Pandey told ESPNcricinfo. “This year, even my first-class experience was very good, as I scored a lot of runs and backed it up with a good IPL and Champions League. Being consistent is why I think I’ve gotten this call-up. The IPL has done a lot of good and gave me a lot of confidence. We play with some of the best players in the world and we get to learn a lot. We get used to the pressure, and learn how to deal with other players.”Pandey, who helped Kolkata Knight Riders to their second IPL title with a 50-ball 94 in the final against Kings XI Punjab, also played a key role for Karnataka last season. He scored 729 runs in the Ranji Trophy at 48.60 with three hundreds and three fifties, as Karnataka went on to claim the title. Pandey hoped the first-class experience would eventually pave the way for a Test debut.”As a batsman, playing Test cricket is my goal. I love the challenges when you play with the red ball, as it requires a lot more focus. I love batting in those conditions, and my runs would attest to that.”It will hopefully be a good season for Karnataka again. We need to maintain the same standard of performances, and look to work harder and bag the Ranji Trophy again.”Pandey, who cites Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid as his two idols, said he was disappointed not to make his international debut earlier, but that he was now fully focused on the immediate task at hand, which is to beat West Indies and secure the ODI series.”I expected the call-up to come sooner and would’ve loved to play a couple of years ago,” he said. “But I’ve matured a lot over the years and played a lot more cricket. I’m ready for the games. West Indies are a good team, but as Indians, we need to be aware of how strong we are. We are looking to win both the ODIs and the T20. I’m not nervous, as I’ve played with or against most of the players in the team. I think it will be good fun and a great experience for me.”

Yet another SSC hundred for Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene cashed in again at his favourite venue to take Sri Lanka to 305 for 5

Fernando: Jayawardene held Sri Lanka together

The last time Mahela Jayawardene batted against South Africa in a Test at the SSC, he made 374, the highest score ever made by a right-handed batsman in Test cricket. Today he walked off to applause for an unbeaten 140 as his 34th Test century held together Sri Lanka’s innings after Angelo Mathews won the toss on what looks another SSC batting beauty. It was his 11th Test hundred at his home venue – as many as the likes of Saeed Anwar, Ravi Shastri, Nathan Astle and Dean Jones each managed over their entire Test careers – and extended his lead at the top of the list for most Test runs scored at a single venue. With Jayawardene passing 5000 first-class runs at the SSC, it might seem like it was business as usual, but it was anything but in the morning session. The peculiar sights early on included an elderly man in the stands keeping cool with a tiny portable fan on his chest, the run-machine Kumar Sangakkara getting a golden duck at a ground he thrives on, the South Africa slip cordon putting down two fairly straightforward chances and Sri Lanka motoring along at well above six an over for a big chunk of the first session of the Test. What was not unexpected in the first session was Dale Steyn again showing he can cause damage on any surface in the world, whether a minefield or a highway. He banged it in in the fifth over had Upul Tharanga fending a catch to the keeper.Steyn followed that up with another short ball to Sangakkara, who responded with a weak pull straight to Imran Tahir at square leg. Sangakkara walked off practising the pull, much like several England batsmen on the final day at Lord’s earlier this week. With Vernon Philander relentlessly probing around off stump, Sri Lanka looked shaky. Kaushal Silva was dropped at third slip off Philander by Alviro Petersen and Jayawardene’s start-stop approach for a single at cover almost resulted in Silva’s run-out.Steyn got only a four-over spell with the new ball though, and once Philander’s fruitless first stint was over, Sri Lanka cashed in against the spinners. The SSC is a track where batsmen are advised to give the first session to the bowlers, and then capitalise on the flatness of the surface. Jayawardene and Silva didn’t have to wait that long. The boundaries were incessant, as full tosses were swatted to midwicket, full balls were driven away. Fifty-runs came in eight overs, and the early pressure had evaporated.Silva had a reprieve early on against Duminy, when his edge whizzed past the stationary AB de Villiers at first slip. With minutes to go before lunch, Silva gave de Villiers another chance, and this time his streaky innings was over.Another quick wicket, and South Africa would have had a crack at Sri Lanka’s inexperienced lower-middle order. With Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne, two youngsters in whom Sri Lanka had placed immense amount of faith, dropped, the batsmen to follow were Kithuruwan Vithanage and debutant Niroshan Dickwella. That breakthrough didn’t arrive though, as Jayawardene and the in-form Angelo Mathews put on a century stand. They took no risks, but still scored at a brisk pace, latching on to the regular bad ball. The closest South Africa came to a wicket in the second session was when an off-balance de Villiers couldn’t fire in a direct hit just before drinks. The session ended with Jayawardene top-edging a boundary to fine leg to bring up his hundred, one of the rare false strokes in a typically polished innings, where he once again demonstrated the value of timing, touch and placement. A nonchalant upper cut over the slips off Morne Morkel was among the highlights of his innings.Mathews picked up most of his runs with drives and nudges to the leg side, though he also pounced on the many short and wide deliveries on offer, crashing them past point. With the attack fading, Mathews went for one more cut when Duminy dropped short, only to edge through to the keeper. Once again the part-time offspinner had delivered an unexpected breakthrough for South Africa.Sri Lanka have picked three specialists spinners, clearly expecting plenty of turn as the match progresses, but South Africa’s lone specialist spinner had another rough outing. The number of poor deliveries Tahir bowled – either half-trackers or loopy full tosses – were too many to be excused as the usual difficulty legspinners have in controlling the ball. South Africa need him to lift his game in the second innings, when the surface will have more in it for him.It was the quicks who caused trouble towards the end of the day, with Vithanage stuttering against a short-ball barrage from Steyn before being undone by a bouncer from Morne Morkel. Dickwella faced a testing time before stumps, but he survived with the help of the DRS.Sri Lanka’s batsmen still have work to do on the second day, but who better to bank on at the SSC than Jayawardene?

Reduzir medidas no futebol feminino? Jogadoras e especialistas discordam

Paty Nardy, goleira do Santos.

É trabalhar a parte técnica, tática e posicionamento.

Paty, goleira do Corinthians

Capacitar as profissionais. Eu respeito a pergunta, argumento.

Marcelo Rossetti, preparador físico do Corinthians

Lancashire batting in question

If Lancashire do not summon a reinforcement for Ashwell Prince there are already signs at Trent Bridge that their batting could be exposed in Division One

George Dobell07-Apr-2014
ScorecardAshwell Price could carry an excessive burden unless Lancashire summon reinforcements•PA PhotosOnly 34 overs were possible on the second day of this game, but there was enough play to suggest that Lancashire’s batting could be a major issue for them this season.Lancashire were reduced to 77 for 6 by the time rain intervened, meaning they still require 46 more runs to avoid the follow-on. While conditions remain helpful for seam bowlers, this is something close to a second string attack for Nottinghamshire. Had Andre Adams, who has a calf injury, or Peter Siddle, who hopes to arrive on Tuesday having resolved his visa issues, been available, things could have been much worse for Lancashire. This is not a new problem for them. In 2012, the year they were relegated in the County Championship, it was their batting that let them down. They passed 400 only twice in the season and only one batsman – Ashwell Prince – scored more than 700 runs. Prince was also the only man in the side to score a century at home.So their failure to strengthen is a surprise. While the presence of Simon Katich helped them gain promotion last year – both he and Prince passed 1,000 Championship runs – there was little sign of improvement from the regular players, with no-one else reaching 750. With Katich retired, the burden on Prince who is now 36, appears excessive.Help may be at hand. The club, keen to provide opportunities for their young batsmen, have yet to sign an overseas player and could call for reinforcements. Faf du Plessis, who made such a positive impression upon the club in his previous stint as a Kolpak registration in 2008-09, is one obvious candidate and would now be able to gain a visa as an overseas player. But such measures tend to mask problems rather than solve them and Lancashire are, admirably, taking a longer-term view. They aim to provide room in the side for the likes of 23-year-old Luis Reece to develop into a high-quality player who could serve club and perhaps country for several years. But, Reece apart, the lack of batsmen who have developed through the club’s system is an obvious weakness and does threaten their Division One survival prospects. Karl Brown and Steven Croft, two locally developed players who were not selected for this match, do not have the first-class averages (26.32 and 31.29 respectively) to suggest they are the answer to Lancashire’s problems.Lancashire never looked likely to prosper in their first innings here. After Paul Horton, attempting to play across a full ball, was the only victim of a fine first spell from Luke Fletcher, Reece, with feet of cement, fenced at one he could have left off the decidedly slippery Harry Gurney. Andrea Agathangelou lost his off stump having left one that nipped back, before Prince was drawn into poking at one he could have left to present Jake Ball with his maiden Championship wicket. Ball, a rangy seamer, followed up with the delivery of the day, nipping back into the left-hander Luke Procter, to win a leg before decision. By the time Alex Davies’ loose drive was beaten by another than nipped back, Lancashire were in something approaching disarray. There is a little mitigation. Such early-season pitches magnify batting flaws and, had Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg been available for Lancashire, it is likely that Nottinghamshire might have struggled to pass 200.But take James Anderson out of this Lancashire side – and England surely will – and the county remains as overly-reliant on Chapple as it has for much of the last decade. And that, in turn, might have consequences for the coaching aspirations of Peter Moores. For while Lancashire’s long-term ambitions are clearly to be applauded, it would be an odd situation whereby the ECB employed their new coach from a team struggling towards the bottom of the Championship and seemingly unable to mend a long-existing weakness.

Davids still part of World T20 plans

Henry Davids still remains part of South Africa’s ‘operation World Twenty20’ despite a string of single-figure scores and a signal that there may not be room for him

Firdose Moonda21-Nov-2013

Henry Davids has not reached double figures in his last six T20I innings•AFP

Henry Davids still remains part of South Africa’s ‘operation World Twenty20′ despite a string of single-figure scores and a signal that there may not be room for him. Davids was released from the squad for the second T20 against Pakistan, to play a first-class match for his franchise, Titans, which starts today, but Faf du Plessis said he is “definitely still in our plans”.Davids has not got into double figures for the national team in his last six T20 innings dating back to March this year. His three scores before that were 68, 55 and 20 but he struggled against the spin threat Pakistan and Sri Lanka posed since then.Adding to his troubles is that Davids has been playing out of position in his last two games because of the return of Hashim Amla, who took a sabbatical from T20s for the 2012-13 season. With Amla making himself available again and Quinton de Kock in good form, Davids, who was picked because of his abilities as an opening batsman, has been forced into an unfamiliar position in the middle order, where he has fared badly.Du Plessis expressed sympathy over Davids plight but explained that the team doesn’t have too many other options “You’ve got to feel for Henry – to go from opening to the middle order and especially against the Pakistan attack where you’re going to get a lot of spinners bowling at you, it’s really tough,” du Plessis said. “And it’s kind of unfair on him.”But, because of the mixture of what du Plessis called “flair and stability” de Kock and Amla provide, Davids is going to have to get used to being moved around if he hopes to play in the national team. “Hopefully he will learn from this more than anything else and he will understand how to grow his game,” du Plessis said. “He is the next best batsman in the set-up but he needs to make sure he can play anywhere in the team. If we have an injury in the World T20, he needs to make sure he can step into any position.”What’s obvious to even the untrained eye is that Davids has technical work to do on his approach against spinners and on how to construct an innings on slower tracks, which he is unused to. Rob Walter, his franchise coach who spent several years as the fitness and fielding trainer to the South Africa team, will be tasked with helping Davids tighten up and du Plessis has no doubt he will bounce back. “He is a quality player and a fantastic striker of the ball,” he said. While Davids has been sent back to the domestic circuit for a repair job, the South African squad has moved on to Cape Town, where they will play Pakistan in a T20 on Friday and an ODI on Sunday. Sandwiched in between the two is du Plessis’ wedding and he is likely to miss the first two ODIs as a result.Du Plessis wants to end off South Africa’s year in T20 cricket – they are next scheduled to play matches against Australia in March – with a dominant showing against Pakistan. Victory will see South Africa winning the two-match series 2-0 and sweep Pakistan across both in the UAE, where they won 2-0, and at home.More importantly, it will rubber stamp du Plessis’ opinion that the T20 team is moving in the right direction ahead of the World T20. “We are starting to win even the games where we are not playing our best and that’s the sign of a good team,” he said, referring to the match at the Wanderers which South Africa won by four runs on Duckworth-Lewis method. South Africa were pulled back after a blazing start with the bat but du Plessis said that since they managed to come out on top, it’s an indication they are learning the habit of winning.
