Newcastle: Magpies keen on Phil Jones

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is an admirer of Manchester United defender Phil Jones but would prefer to take him on a free transfer rather than a loan, according to 90min.

The lowdown

Jones last played a Premier League match a full 18 months ago, having been sidelined for the entirety of the 2020/21 season with a knee injury, but he is a vastly experienced defender with exactly 200 top-flight games under his belt.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported earlier in July that signing a centre-back was one of Newcastle’s priorities this summer, and the prospective signing of Raphael Varane may well push Jones further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

The latest

According to 90min, Manchester United are said to be ‘particularly eager’ to find a new club for Jones this summer, so they could waive their right to a transfer fee. Newcastle are one of ‘a number of clubs’ interested in the 29-year-old, with Bruce ‘convinced’ that the player can still deliver at the highest level.

The Toon would be reluctant to allocate one of their two domestic loan slots to Jones, and even if the 20-time champions are indeed ‘prepared to let… [him] leave on a free transfer’ the Red Devils may have to pay a portion of his £110,000-a-week wages.

The verdict

To what extent would this deal be viewed as a risk? On the one hand, Newcastle may end up investing relatively little money in Jones.

On the other, if he is their only addition at centre-back, it’s a clear gamble. He will need to build back up to full match fitness, and even then there will be question marks over whether he can recapture his pre-injury levels given his record in that regard during his career.

The Magpies would be better off pursuing Jones’ team-mate Axel Tuanzebe, who Newcastle also like, if the money involved is reasonable.

Tanguy Ndombele considering Spurs future

Another one of Nuno Santo’s playing squad is considering his future at Tottenham Hotspur in a fresh bombshell…

What’s the word?

According to football.london’s Alasdair Gold, first-team midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is the latest name to be mulling over his long-term future in North London.

However, this situation is unlike the saga surrounding Harry Kane, who is desperate to go and win trophies at Manchester City. It’s thought that the Frenchman is disappointed by the potential departures of two of his closest teammates, Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko.

Ndombele has struggled to adapt to life in England and, by his own admission, told those around him, including chairman Daniel Levy, that he wanted to leave just a few weeks after arriving in the summer of 2020.

Another setback

It would be hard for the Spurs hierarchy to give up on their club-record signing after just two seasons, especially as they may struggle to recoup the £55m they paid Lyon for his signature.

However, they would be powerless if Ndombele feels so strongly about a departure, and in comparison to Kane, he’s certainly the more expendable option.

We know the ups and downs that the £45m-rated maverick had under Jose Mourinho. In the early days he struggled to make his mark, but towards the end of the Portuguese’s reign, he was often one of the first names on the team sheet.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-team-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more-copy” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

Interestingly, he would arguably be a perfect fit in Nuno’s 4-3-3 set-up, though his absence against Chelsea in Wednesday’s pre-season friendly was a little perplexing, particularly as he was not away on international duty throughout the past month or two.

If Ndombele wants to follow Kane out the exit door this summer, then it will definitely leave the 47-year-old boss in a sticky spot as he’d be left with two glaring voids of quality in two key areas.

Some of the Lilywhites faithful are less than impressed by this latest development from Hotspur Way, too.

“Please leave,” demanded one supporter, whilst another described the update as “embarrassing.” Ndombele was even dubbed an “absolute disgrace” by a further member of the Spurs fanbase, as relayed by This is Futbol.

With kick-off against Manchester City only a week away, this is the last thing that Nuno needs to think about.

Celtic: Hoops now working on Nisbet move

Celtic are now interested in signing Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet, according to The Daily Mail’s Stephen McGowan.

The Lowdown: Nisbet’s impressive campaign

Nisbet enjoyed a successful 2020/21 season at Easter Road. The 24-year-old scored 18 times and registered eight assists in all competitions, with two of his goals coming against the Hoops.

His displays were rewarded with a place in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the European Championships.

Nisbet, who Jack Ross described as ‘terrific’ last year, featured in just 21 minutes of action at Euro 2020 and currently holds a Transfermarkt valuation of £2.7m.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-7/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Nisbet links

According to McGowan, Celtic have now set their sights on Nisbet after announcing a deal for defender Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday.

Work has already begun to see how much a potential transfer would cost, with Hibs thought to be holding out for more than £4m.

The Verdict: Wyke or Nisbet?

Another striker who has been heavily linked with a Celtic Park switch in recent weeks is Charlie Wyke.

Wyke, who is now out of contract with former employers Sunderland, wanted Celtic to double his wages on a four-year deal with a multi-million pound signing-on fee.

A move for Wyke has gone quiet in recent days, and perhaps Nisbet would be a smarter option.

He’s four years youngster than Wyke and has experience of scoring goals in the Scottish Premiership.

Nisbet is on £1,000-a-week at Hibs, compared to Wyke’s recent £6,400-a-week salary with Sunderland.

Yes, Celtic would have to pay a fee for Nisbet and not Wyke, but it could prove to be a wise move, should they decide to do so.

West Brom interested in Emiliano Marcondes

West Bromwich Albion are interested in a deal to bring Emiliano Marcondes to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Express, who claim that Valerian Ismael is keen to add more firepower to his Albion side in the summer transfer window, with the out of contract Brentford attacking midfielder thought to be a target of the 45-year-old.

It is reported that Ismael had been considering a move the former Denmark U21 international in his time at Barnsley, with the Frenchman believed to have retained his interest following his move to Albion.

Ismael must move

Having joined Brentford from FC Nordsjaelland back in January of 2018, Marcondes went on to feature 97 times for Thomas Frank’s side, scoring seven goals and laying on 13 assists for his teammates.

Last season, the £2.52m-rated man once again impressed over his 31 Championship appearances for the Bees, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating three big chances, as well as taking an average of 0.8 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £12k-per-week 26-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.75, playing a huge part in Brentford going on to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

As such, with Ismael undoubtedly hoping to build a side in the summer transfer window that is capable of going on to secure an immediate return to the top flight of English football next season, the addition of a player Frank dubbed a “fantastic” talent would appear to provide the Baggies with a huge boost to their chances of going on to achieve this feat.

Furthermore, with the attacking midfielder being available on a free transfer, he would also represent something of a bargain signing for the club, something that will allow Ismael to bring in a greater number of his transfer targets this summer – leading us to believe the Frenchman should do all he can to get a deal over the line for Marcondes.

Richard Walsh03-Jul-2002Somerset spent a hard day in the field at Taunton today where table toppers Surrey amassed 448 for 5.After winning the toss Somerset put Surrey in to bat, and Steffan Jones and Simon Francis both claimed early wickets as the visitors slipped to 32 for 2, which could so easily have become 46 for 3.Francis in particular bowled well, and in his opening spell had figures of 7 overs 1 wicket for 12 runs.Mark Ramprakash then started to take control and shared partnerships with Nadeem Shahid (51) Adam Hollioake (87), and Ricky Clarke(50 not out) , and at close of play was unbeaten on 199.At the end of the day Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "The boys have had a long hard day out there today."Keith Parsons told me: "When we won the toss and put them in,it looked greener than usual and we hoped that by the end of the day that we would have got more than five out. But it didn’t work out and they got away."The C and G Final `Man of the Match’ continued : "We have got a lot of hard work to do in the morning to get them out, and then when we bat we have got to dig in and get to their total and beyond."He concluded: "Simon Francis bowled well all day for us, but overall things didn’t go our way today."

Spurs could yet target ten Hag

According to a report by the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur held a video call with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag before he signed a new contract and he could yet come back on to the club’s radar.

The Lowdown: Spurs manager chase…

Spurs have suffered repeated managerial blows over this last fortnight.

Firstly, the Athletic broke news of Tottenham and their talks with former boss Mauricio Pochettino – but his current club PSG refused to budge on their stance of letting the Argentine leave.

Afterwards, Spurs turned their focus to former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte, but those talks eventually broke down – leaving the Lilywhites back at square one.

The Latest: Spurs could turn to ten Hag…

Now, the Telegraph claim that Erik ten Hag could still come back into focus amid Fabio Paratici’s impending appointment as sporting director/general manager.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Spurs will apparently be starting fresh with a new shortlist and the Italian is said to be overseeing it.

One man who could retain his place as a Tottenham managerial target, though, is ten Hag – with journalist Matt Law stating that Spurs held a video call with the Dutchman before he signed his new deal at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Even though a new candidate list will need to be drawn up amid Paratici’s arrival, it is believed ten Hag could still come back on to Tottenham’s radar.

However, if they are to make a move for him, Spurs would now be forced to pay compensation.

The Verdict: Do it Paratici…

After blows involving Conte and Pochettino, you could make the argument that ten Hag is now Tottenham’s best possible managerial solution factoring in chairman Daniel Levy’s requirements.

Even though pundit Kevin Campbell has doubts over whether he would succeed in the Premier League, despite calling him ‘brilliant’ in his role at Ajax, ten Hag does have one big admirer in Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Indeed, Klopp dubbed him ‘one of the most exciting coaching talents in world football’ (Planet Football), and it’s hard to argue given his impressive career average of 2.07 points per match (Transfermarkt).

He may just be Tottenham’s best hope.

Yesterday, one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated sons and world renowned cricket icon reached another milestone in his wonderful innings of life. Sir IVA Richards, former West Indies captain and world record holder for the fastest Test century turned 50. Sir Viv jokingly said that he was “happy to get there with a single” as opposed to a boundary.Sir Viv, who started the day in Trinidad with a 30 minute prayer session – which was led by former West Indies faster bowler and current WICB president Rev. Wes Hall and attended by most of his former teammates – spent the better portion of his birthday in the land of his birth, Antigua.Richards, who was given a rousing welcome upon arrival, was the toast of the island. Speaking in an interview with CricInfo, Sir Viv said that he was “thankful to God”, and that he was “ecstatic about all the love and well wishes” that he received via the print and electronic media. Sir Viv also said that “it was good to be among so many greats and starting the day right with a 30 minute prayer session”.Sir Viv, who was in Trinidad attending a WICB sponsored conference aimed at updating and standardizing a coaching manual specifically for the West Indies, said that he felt the sessions were “useful” and that the discussions would bear fruit. Earlier, he once again indicated his willingness to serve West Indies cricket at the highest level. In 1999, the WICB overlooked Richards for the position of coach in favour of Roger Harper, whose contract expires in March 2003, along with the rest of the team’s current management staff. After spending most of the morning at home with his family, and graciously granting several interviews and receiving special birthday wishes from all sectors, Sir Viv said that he planned to spend the rest of the afternoon on the golf course where he “had a score to settle.”Just last weekend the player who had become known as “The Bull” or the “Master Blaster”, was honoured by the Anguilla Cricket Development Association at a special function at the Governor’s mansion. Speaking during that function, Sir Viv, who during his playing days gave opposing bowlers many a sleepless night, said: “I think it is a remarkable feat to be here and I’ve always had a pretty love-relationship with the Anguillan people.””I felt by just walking (around the ground) that the reception that one received it is a sign that the people seriously care about West Indies cricket and the things one did achieve in the past and I’m very grateful to be here and received all the wonderful things they have bestowed on me.”WICB’s vice president Val Banks, speaking during the ceremony, said that Sir Viv “epitomizes a love for West Indies that is a motivating force.” Banks also went on to state that Sir Viv “embodies the spirit of his native Antiguans, who are some of the Caribbean’s most positive people.”Sir Viv is now an ambassador for his native Antigua, and was honoured during a special ceremony at the Antigua Recreation Grounds during the West Indies v Pakistan Test in 2000. Sir Viv represented the West Indies from 1975 to 1991, and captained the West Indies from 1985. Sir Viv, who took over as captain from Clive Lloyd, was succeeded by his fellow Antiguan, Richie Richardson.
