Next generation more capable than me – Dravid

Rahul Dravid, who announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket on Friday, has said the next few years will be interesting and challenging times for Indian cricket and that he believed the next generation of batsmen are capable of achieving more than he had.Dravid’s retirement has coincided with India’s worst phase as a Test team in recent times, having lost eight consecutive Tests in England and Australia and mixed results in one-dayers. Fans and the media have been calling for either a phased or complete revamp of India’s batting line-up and Dravid’s step was the first high-profile departure in the aftermath of the Australia tour. Dravid admitted that the results were painful but said India’s future looks healthy.Rahul Dravid: ” I was nowhere near as talented as some of these kids”•AFP

“We are all disappointed by the fact that we didn’t do well in England and Australia, not just for the cricketers, but for people all around,” Dravid said. “Having said that, I feel Indian cricket is in a good place and I think there are some really exciting young talents coming through. As to who will replace me, there are some waiting in the wings who can definitely step up and take over.”Dravid was India’s best batsman in England in 2011 by a fair distance. However, he suffered an unexpected slump in Australia, scoring 194 runs in four Tests at 24.25. The seniors were persisted with in all four Tests despite failing, while the in-form Rohit Sharma was benched. Virat Kohli’s century in Adelaide, which was followed by a passionate and uninhibited celebration, only increased the calls for phasing out the seniors for accommodating more youngsters. Dravid said talent is not in short supply in India.”They’ve got all the talent and skills required to achieve success at this level,” Dravid said. “When I look back at myself as a 23-year-old when I played for India, and when I look at the talent on show now, I just know that I was nowhere near as talented as some of these kids.”Just being talented doesn’t necessarily mean you will have a successful Test career. There are a lot of things that go with it, how you face the challenges and deal with things that are more internal than external. I think it will be interesting and really fun for me, as I sit back on my couch, to watch some of these young players try to establish themselves over the next two to three years.”Besides Kohli and Rohit, the batsmen vying for the vacancies in India’s Test batting line-up, at No.3 and No.6, include Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara, Manoj Tiwary, Ravindra Jadeja and S Badrinath. However, nobody has firmly established himself in the line-up (Jadeja is yet to play a Test), due to reasons varying from injury, to form, inconsistency in selection and adaptability in foreign conditions. Dravid said he was fortunate his generation was able to nail down a position in the line-up over a period of time.”If you look at my generation, Sachin, Laxman, Sourav, Viru (Sehwag), Gauti (Gambhir)…we were able to establish ourselves. It makes a big difference. If you have people coming in and out, what that means is you are not performing well and it leads to instability. It’s going to be a challenging, interesting time to see how these kids end up.”Dravid stopped short of naming a particular player capable of replacing him. “I wouldn’t like to name one Indian player. I think there is a huge group of players that can be better than Rahul Dravid. I’m sure in 16-17 years’ time you will be attending a press conference of a player who has probably done a lot more than I have.”

Successive losses for Zimbabwe Under-19s

ScorecardZimbabwe Under-19 sank to their second successive drubbing in the tri-series, losing to Pakistan by 129 runs in Somerset West.Batting first, Pakistan were steered towards a formidable total by their captain Babar Azam who made 85. Umar Waheed contributed a quick 63 off 49 balls in the middle overs to keep up the momentum, as Pakistan surged to 265 for 9. They could have finished with even more, but for Luke Jongwe’s restrictive and incisive spell of 3 for 46.Zimbabwe’s chase began in solid, if somewhat sluggish fashion, with the openers adding 43 in 16.1 overs. Thereafter, the wheels gradually came off, with opening bowler Zia-ul-Haq taking three wickets, and Usman Qadir chipping in with two. Luke Masasire finished with a half-century, but no one else went past 22 as Zimbabwe subsided to 136 all out in the 37th over.

Kochi franchise terminated by BCCI

The Kochi Tuskers Kerala franchise has been issued a suspension notice by the BCCI for non-payment of a bank guarantee, PTI has reported

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Sep-2011The Kochi Tuskers Kerala IPL franchise has been terminated by the BCCI for breaching its terms of agreement, the new board president N Srinivasan has said after the annual general meeting in Mumbai. The trigger for the decision was the franchise’s inability to furnish a new bank guarantee for 2011. It is understood that the deadline for Kochi to submit the bank guarantee was March 26, 2011. So the BCCI felt it had every right to terminate the contract once the franchise had failed to produce it.”Because of the irremediable breach committed by the Kochi franchise, the BCCI has decided to encash the bank guarantee [for 2010] in its possession and also terminate the franchise,” Srinivasan said. When asked if Kochi had any chance of returning, Srinivasan responded: “No, we have terminated the franchise because the breach is not capable of being remedied.”Under the terms of the franchise agreement, each franchise has to submit a bank guarantee every year that covers the fee payable to the BCCI. “We waited for six months for the fresh bank guarantee to come,” a top BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo. “They kept saying they will, they will, they will. That had no meaning.”According to the official Shashank Manohar, who stepped down as BCCI president at the AGM, had told Kochi’s owners that in case they needed an extension, they should send a letter signed by all the owners stating they would fulfill their commitments under the franchise agreement or the BCCI could encash the bank guarantee. The franchise had assured Manohar they would send the letter the same evening.”The last president [Manohar] said that that if you want an extension of two to three days or more, you give us a letter signed by all the owners saying that we undertake to pay the guarantee money by such and such a date,” the official said. “And if we fail to do that we have no objection to the bank guarantee to be encashed by the BCCI.”The official said the Kochi owners sent a “simple letter” that did not include all the details Manohar had asked for and so the board took the decision to terminate the franchise. “[These] things do not work. It is even unfair to the other franchises.”According to the official, the BCCI was not worried about Kochi going to court because it was the franchise that had defaulted. As for the players, they are likely to go back into the auction. “And in case the players’ dues are not paid, we would ensure that it is paid from the bank guarantee money we encash.”The chairman of Kochi, Mukesh Patel, however, denied that the franchise owed the board any money. “The BCCI notice is wrong, prima facie,” he told . “We will take legal action against them after our legal team reviews the case in a day or two. Maybe we have to move court. We have never defaulted. The BCCI will be paying us Rs 12 to 15 crore ($2.5 million to $3.13 million) next month as a part of our central revenue.”The franchise’s dispute centres on the BCCI’s decision to reduce the number of IPL games from 94 to 74. “The number of games in Tender Document was 94; they then reduced it to 74 but did not reduce the franchise fees.”The BCCI also appointed Rajiv Shukla as the new IPL chairman, succeeding Chirayu Amin, and said that the league’s governing council would take a decision on whether to have another auction for a new franchise. With Kochi’s termination, the ten-team competition will be reduced to nine. The consortium that owns Kochi is reported to have defaulted on an annual payment of Rs 156 crores as a bank guarantee. In April 2010, the BCCI’s working committee had rejected demands from Kochi and Pune Warriors for a reduction in their franchisee fees. The two new franchises, which made their debuts in 2011, had sought a 25% waiver on the grounds that the BCCI had stated in the bidding document that each team would play 18 league matches in a season. The schedule was later reduced to 14 matches per team. The two teams already paid 75% of this year’s installment and wanted the balance waived. They argued the reduction in matches was a breach of the terms of the Invitation to Tender the BCCI had issued before the two new teams were bought. Since they had based their bid on the number of matches to be played, a reduction should therefore be accompanied by a reduction in the franchise fee. However, the BCCI voted to turn down the request at its meeting in Mumbai in April. In March 2010, the Sahara group had bid $370 million to became owners of the Pune franchise while a consortium of five companies called Rendezvous Sports World offered $333.33 million for Kochi.

85 do Estatuto Social; e

Improved batting needed for Pune turnaround

ESPNcricinfo previews the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors in Bangalore

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Yuvraj Singh will look for more support from his batting line-up•Associated PressBig pictureTime is running out for Pune Warriors. With four losses out of six matches, they have severe catching-up to do in their remaining eight games. And it all has to start with snapping a four-match losing streak they have accumulated. In their last three matches they have been 17 for 4, 40 for 4 and 41 for 4. The batting order is surely not ideal: Yuvraj Singh at No. 5 always runs the risk of being wasted, Mithun Manhas and Mohnish Mishra in the top four make it one non-international batsman too many, and Callum Ferguson definitely should not be on the bench considering their batting failures.Royal Challengers Bangalore, on the other hand, have started a turnaround of sorts with Chris Gayle’s arrival. They have seven points after seven matches; 14 after 14 can get them through to the qualifiers. However, they will want more than that, and will be aiming at four wins at least in the remaining games.Form guide (most recent first)Bangalore WWNLL (fourth in points table)

Celtic must axe McCarthy and Soro

Celtic once again have the chance to make some changes to their squad when the upcoming summer transfer window opens for business.

In terms of what deals the Parkhead club should be looking to do, we think this period is the ideal time for them to get rid of two current figures in Ange Postecoglou’s squad – James McCarthy and Ismaila Soro.

Soro’s struggles at Celtic

Taking into account how Soro has only played three minutes of Premiership action since September, it’s safe to say that he is not particularly high in the pecking order at this moment in time.

If there is little sign of that changing for the remainder of the season, then the club should definitely consider cashing in on the Ivorian if possible.

Back in February 2021, former Hoops boss Neil Lennon revealed that the midfielder was “struggling with fatigue,” but it may now be the Celtic supporters who are tired of him still being in the squad.

Soro’s overall performances in the league this season have earned the 23-year-old a rather disappointing overall rating of 6.25/10, making him one of the lowest-rated players in the squad according to WhoScored.

Having been linked with a move away from Scotland in January, it seems likely that he could be on the move during the upcoming transfer window.

McCarthy also having a tough time

As for McCarthy, even though he only put pen to paper on a four-year deal last August, the Irishman’s place at the club should be in question.

With just nine Premiership appearances and four starts to his name, the midfielder has failed to impress in the current campaign, just like Soro.

In those league games, the 31-year-old has recorded more fouls (seven) than crosses (five), interceptions (four) or tackles (six), making him somewhat of a liability.

Labelled a “terrible flop” in the past by outspoken Irish pundit Eamon Dunphy, McCarthy is close to regaining that unfortunate billing unless he can show before the end of the campaign that he can offer something to the team, rather than holding them back along with Soro.

Should the Hoops end up waving goodbye to one or both of these midfield strugglers this summer, they will definitely need to ensure that they bring in some suitable replacements so that the squad has enough depth to attack the 2022/23 campaign.

Gambhir, Ishant and Laxman return for Tests

Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma have recovered from injuries sustained during the Test series against Australia are included in India’s squad for the three-Test series against New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2010

VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma, heroes of the Mohali Test against Australia, have recovered from their injuries•AFP

Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman and Ishant Sharma have recovered from injuries that kept them out of the second Test against Australia, and are included in India’s squad for the three-Test series against New Zealand, which begins on November 4 in Ahmedabad. That Cheteshwar Pujara and M Vijay filled in superbly for Laxman and Gambhir in Bangalore made this a straightforward selection, with both of them retaining their places in the 15-member squad. Amit Mishra and Sreesanth will be the reserve spinner and seamer respectively. All three returning players missed parts of the first Test in Mohali. Gambhir and Ishant struggled with knee injuries, and Laxman back spasms. Taking injections and painkilling tablets, Laxman and Ishant took India to an improbable win with an 81-run ninth-wicket stand on the final day. All three sat out of the second Test in Bangalore. Gambhir and Laxman have had to struggle with injury over the year: Laxman had to fight back spasms during his match-winning century in August at the P Sara Oval, a Test Gambhir missed. No one will complain if Gambhir and Laxman walk into the side, but during their absence in Bangalore, Vijay and Pujara did enough to show they were ready should they be needed again. Vijay scored a century after India were 38 for 2 in the first innings, and Pujara smashed 72 off 89 balls from No. 3 in the successful chase of 207. Both were good in close-in positions in the field. Sreesanth, who bowled better than his figures of 0 for 79 and 2 for 48 might suggest, will be easier to replace by Ishant. In what could be another good sign, India chose to go without any back-up wicketkeeper. That could mean MS Dhoni is more confident of his fitness after back trouble and a finger injury meant India had to pick a back-up keeper for the home series against South Africa and the Sri Lanka tour earlier this year. With the first-choice XI presumably fit, and the reserves looking good for more responsibilities, this is perhaps the strongest Indian Test side, given the conditions, in a long time.Kris Srikkanth, chairman of the Indian selection committee, was pleased with the exploits of the injury replacements who played against Australia, and looked forward to more success against New Zealand. “The team had performed extremely well against the Australians in both the Tests and one-day series. Particularly, the Bangalore Test was the icing on the cake. The junior players have gelled well with the seniors. I am confident that our players will continue their victory march.”India: MS Dhoni (capt), Virender Sehwag (vice-capt), Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara, M Vijay, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra

Leeds: Pete O’Rourke makes Junior Firpo claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes Leeds United have a ‘problem’ at left-back due to Junior Firpo’s struggles at Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Firpo’s first season

The £10.8m-rated defender arrived in Yorkshire last summer from Barcelona but has struggled to make a significant impact in the Premier League.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As per WhoScored, Firpo has received more yellow cards than any other Leeds player and ranks highly for fouls committed. He has also been one of the club’s worst-rated performers, missing 13 games under both Marcelo Bielsa and Jesse Marsch.

Firpo, who Paul Robinson labelled as ‘terrible’ against Tottenham back in February, has been absent in Leeds’ last four games but appears to have made a return to training this week following a knee problem.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to The Transfer Tavern about the club’s priorities ahead of the summer window, O’Rourke hinted that left-back has been a ‘problem’, name-checking Firpo for his poor form and injury struggles.

“I think left-back is still a problem for the team as well. Right now, Junior Firpo has struggled since his arrival from Barcelona with form and injury.

“A lot will depend on the futures of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha to decide what else Leeds need to do in the transfer market.”

The Verdict: Full-back needed?

Stuart Dallas has filled in for Firpo in recent weeks, with the Northern Irishman’s versatility proving to be crucial for Marsch in Leeds’ upturn in form.

Marsch and Victor Orta met last week to discuss the profile of players they want to target in the summer, and bringing in another full-back could be handy ahead of his first full season in charge.

Javi Galan, a left-back who can play further forward, has once again been linked with a move to Elland Road in recent weeks, so it will be interesting to see if another full-back comes in over the coming months to rival Firpo and Dallas.
