Dawodu to sign SWFC deal

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a major boost as 20-year-old right-back Josh Dawodu is expected to sign a new contract with the club.

What’s the talk?

Under-23’s right-back Dawodu is set to sign a contract extension with Sheffield Wednesday to prevent him from leaving the club at the end of the month. Dawodu’s current deal expires at the end of June and his agent has revealed that he will be extending his contract with Sheffield Wednesday to put any doubts over his long-term future at the club to bed.

According to The Star, Dawodu trained with the first-team for the majority of the season as Darren Moore looked at the possibility of him making the step up to senior level. The club are said to have high hopes for the up-and-coming right-back.

Dawodu’s agent, Ian Luck, has confirmed that his client is going to put pen to paper on fresh terms at Hillsborough, adding he believes in Moore’s plans for the future. He told The Star:

“He will be signing the new contract he’s been offered… He’s been really impressed with the new manager and is currently in a training camp now so that he’ll be fit and firing by the time he returns to preseason.

“He wants to stay, the goal is to force his way into the first team and become a regular. Josh is working extremely hard to give himself the best chance of doing that, we have had good conversations with Darren Moore and believe in his project for the future.”

Moore will be delighted

Moore will be delighted by this news for a number of reasons. Firstly, the defender is highly thought of at Hillsborough and that suggests that he has the potential to develop into a key first-team player in the future. Therefore, Moore could have the chance to work with Dawodu as a first-team player in League One next season and see how the 20-year-old fares when faced with competitive matches.

The Owls boss will also be buzzing to read the quotes from Luck regarding Dawodu’s thoughts on the former West Brom man. Dawodu is said to have been impressed by Moore since his arrival at the club and that shows that he has been doing something right since taking over during the season. Moore has given Dawodu faith in the long-term plan for the club and that bodes well for the upcoming transfer window as it shows that the manager is capable of convincing young players to buy into his philosophy.

Dawodu could be seen as the eventual successor to Liam Palmer at right-back. Palmer turns 30 in September and is out of contract in 2022, which could open the door for a younger defender to transition into the first-team ahead of him throughout the upcoming campaign with a view to taking over from him full-time for the 2022/23 season. The 29-year-old averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.57 in 39 Championship appearances for Wednesday this season, with a shocking score of 6.38 in 10 starts as a conventional right-back.

West Ham fans delighted by Sima news

Many West Ham United fans are delighted after it was confirmed they are in talks with Slavia Prague to sign Abdallah Sima this summer.

The 19-year-old has been enjoying his breakout season with the Czech champions in 2020/21. In 31 games in all competitions, he has managed 15 goals despite not being a striker (Transfermarkt). Four of those came in the Europa League, with his effort against Leicester particularly catching the eye of English audiences.

Sima has previously been valued at £50m by Slavia (Calciomercato). However, it seems that such a fee has not put off David Moyes and co – Slavia manager Jindrich Trpisovsky has revealed they have spoken to West Ham about the 19-year-old, who are said to have the Senegal international on their list of targets.

The comments were shared on Slavia’s official Twitter account, and they attracted plenty of attention from West Ham supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Spurs and Bielsa: Good or bad for Kane?

Plenty have been calling for Tottenham Hotspur to appoint Marcelo Bielsa as Jose Mourinho’s successor this week…

What’s the word?

The ‘Special One’ was sacked after 17 months at the helm, with former midfielder Ryan Mason taking the reins until the end of the season, when Daniel Levy will look to appoint a permanent replacement.

Several names have been linked with the vacant role, ranging from mooted number one target Julian Naglesmann to Brendan Rodgers and even Athletic Bilbao’s Marcelino, but it is Bielsa’s name which is on the lips of many.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Dean Windass claimed the Leeds United boss “would be the one on the lips of Daniel Levy” and he’s not the only one thinking this.

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara stoked the fire even more when he told talkSPORT: “I think he’d be absolutely brilliant and the fans would love him. If you can try and prise him away form there it’d be unbelievable.”

Meanwhile, according to Tony Cascarino in his column for The Times, Bielsa “could regenerate Tottenham”.

Could ruin Kane

The 65-year-old is a very intriguing option to consider, but there must be a few question marks over whether or not he’s actually the right fit for Levy and Tottenham.

He has exceeded expectations at Elland Road and has delivered a strong maiden season back in the Premier League, especially as he’s largely been deploying what is the bulk of his Championship title-winning squad.

They sit tied on points with Arsenal in 10th place and have won away to Manchester City and Leicester, who occupy two of the top three spots.

Mauricio Pochettino is a huge admirer of his, having played under him at Newell’s Old Boys. “For me, he’s a person I will always admire,” revealed the former Spurs manager. “He’s a genius. A person with charisma and a personality very different from us normal coaches, and that’s what makes him special.”

However, the bulk of this success has come down to the 65-year-old’s philosophy – a relentless press, the mantra of putting the side before self, and working on the method before the result.

This means a lot of work is put into training, such as his ‘murderball’ sessions which Leeds’ top scorer Patrick Bamford recently described as “about ten times harder than a [Premier League] game.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-manager-transfer-news-and-rumours” title=”Read this week’s latest Spurs manager news, transfer rumours and more!”]

It’s also claimed that Bielsa’s teams suffer from burnout in the final thirds of the season due to built-up fatigue because his high-intensity system places such serious physical demands on the players.

Ultimately, this may well spell serious trouble for Harry Kane, who suffered another ankle injury this week.

In 2019, BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker expressed his fears over the England skipper in an interview with Goal. He said: “It is always a worry when you get a recurring injury and there is clearly a little weakness in there,” adding: “The more you do it, the more you worry the weakness will become a problem.”

Given Bielsa’s ruthless training sessions, let alone his intense pressing from the front in matches, you’d have to have major concerns over the 27-year-old talisman if the Argentine replaces Mourinho.

Spurs rely heavily on the goalscoring and creative exploits of Kane; he has accounted for 60.7% of their 54 league goals this term through either scoring or setting them up.

There’s one other factor which should put Bielsa down the pecking order, as his Leeds side has often suffered from profligacy. Despite winning the Championship last term, the Whites ranked amongst the five worst teams for goal conversion at just 12.5%.

That hasn’t really risen in the Premier League, with Leeds only converting 8.1% of their 614 shots at goal, as per Transfermarkt. In some games they find the net three, four, even five times, but in others they draw a serious blank despite creating so many chances – Kane could well suffer as a result of that, too.

If Levy listens to the aforementioned calls, then he would risk ruining his superstar striker. As good as Bielsa is, he just isn’t the right man to replace Mourinho in N17.

AND in other news, Levy would be appointing Mourinho 2.0 in “stubborn” 62 y/o flop…

Alan Shearer heaps praise on Stuart Dallas

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Leeds United star Stuart Dallas, following his weekend heroics.

The 29-year-old produced a memorable performance on Saturday afternoon, proving to be the hero against soon-to-be-champions Manchester City.

Dallas scored both of his side’s goals, including the stoppage time winner, and his all-round display was typically influential, as has been the case throughout this season.

Shearer waxes lyrical over Dallas

Someone who was clearly impressed with what he saw was Shearer, who named Dallas in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Writing about the versatile Northern Irishman, the ex-England and Newcastle United star outlined his impact at the Etihad last weekend:

“Wow. Outstanding. After helping to defend with 10 men for so long, he somehow still had the energy to run through and score the winner.”

Transfer Tavern take

It’s nice to see that Dallas finally seems to be receiving more mainstream praise, with Leeds fans well aware of his quality for some time now.

He was once described as ‘selfless’ by former Whites striker Jermaine Beckford, which perfectly sums up his unsung nature and team ethic.

As the campaign nears its conclusion, Dallas is a strong contender to win Leeds’ Player of the Year award, especially given his current form, with the midfielder scoring seven goals and registering two assists in the league.

Grealish sale will impact Villa signings

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has warned his old side of the consequences that would come with selling star man Jack Grealish.

Grealish is currently being linked with a move to Manchester City, and Hendrie believes any potential sale would send the wrong message to summer targets, possibly detracting them from the club.

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has been in scintillating form this season, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists in the current Premier League campaign. Furthermore, it is no surprise that a team like Manchester City are interested in his services.

On the potential ramifications of selling Grealish in the next transfer window, Hendrie told FFC:

“Grealish, you know, I’ve got to sit on the fence with. I don’t know whether he’ll stay, but if you’re keeping players like that, you’re attracting bigger players. If you’re selling Jack Grealish, you’re not going to get the players you want in through the door.”

Without a doubt, selling Grealish this summer really could be detrimental to Villa after a season where they have made an incredible amount of progress. Dean Smith’s men are in contention for European football next term and currently have the third-best defensive record in the Premier League.

Losing their best player could set them back while giving them an image of being a selling club, an image that may put off any ambitious transfer targets the Villans have for the next window.

Rangers’ unbeaten hopes could be ended

Glasgow Rangers could be denied the chance to go the whole Premiership season unbeaten amidst suggestions the campaign could be brought to a premature end.

Rangers season could end early

The Gers’ status as champions was confirmed on Sunday after Celtic could only manage a 0-0 draw with Dundee United. In the aftermath, thousands of the Ibrox outfit’s supporters took to the streets of Glasgow, disregarding lockdown regulations in the process (Sky News).

The Gers are set to face their fierce city rivals Celtic on March 21, and there are fears that similar scenes could unfold. As such, Ian Maxwell and Neil Doncaster, of the SFA and SPFL respectively, have been ordered to talk to the Scottish government, and a premature end to the campaign has not been ruled out (Daily Record).

Disappointing

What should have been a wonderful weekend for the 55-time Scottish champions has had the shine taken off it ever so slightly. Given we are in a global pandemic, it is worrying to see so many people on the streets, even if it is to celebrate an important achievement for the Gers. Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon brandished the public scenes of celebration as “disgraceful”.

However, it is wrong to suggest that this will now become a huge issue for the rest of the season. Yes, the Old Firm derby is a huge occasion in Scottish football, but the Premiership has already been won at this point by Steven Gerrard’s side. Even if they were to prevail in that match, what would be the point of the supporters taking to the streets?  Hopefully, the worst is now over.

In other news, many Rangers fans laud key Ibrox figure.
